What if your body already has everything it needs to heal and unresolved trauma is the only thing standing in the way?In this episode of What Happens in Vagus, Dr. Stephanie Canestraro sits down with Peter McLaughlin, a certified hypnotherapist who put his chronic lymphocytic leukemia into remission in 2003, without chemotherapy. Peter's journey began in the wreckage of a life running on pure adrenaline: a demanding Wall Street career, a two-hour daily commute, three young children, and an office one block from Ground Zero on September 11th. When his body finally gave out, his leukemia diagnosis became the catalyst that set him on a path toward subconscious healing, hypnotherapy, and a complete understanding of the mind-body connection.Together, Peter and Dr. Stephanie explore one of the most overlooked truths in chronic illness: that emotional trauma, including small, seemingly insignificant moments from childhood, gets stored in the subconscious mind and continues to drive the body's stress response for decades. Because the subconscious has no concept of time, a humiliating moment in third grade or a cry left unanswered in a crib can still be activating a fight-or-flight response in your body today. This chronic activation of the autonomic nervous system suppresses immunity, disrupts hormones, stalls digestion, and creates the environment in which disease takes root.Dr. Stephanie also shares her own healing journey from a Lyme disease and Bartonella infection that attacked her nervous system and went undiagnosed for over a decade, to the functional medicine interventions, precious metal IVs, and reconnection with her body's inner wisdom that finally brought her back. Together they connect the dots between nervous system dysregulation, frequency medicine, and the extraordinary capacity of the human body to heal when given the right tools.✦ In this episode:• How chronic stress and emotional trauma directly contribute to serious illness• Why childhood events your conscious mind has "forgotten" are still running your nervous system• What hypnotherapy actually does and how it clears emotional toxins from the subconscious• Why you cannot heal in fight-or-flight mode and how to shift into rest-and-digest• How cortisol signals your body to hold onto fat• 432 Hz healing music, binaural beats, and frequencies that regulate the nervous system• Applied kinesiology, muscle testing, and pendulum work as tools for inner wisdom• Peter's work with professional athletes and how childhood trauma shows up on the field• Precious metals (gold, silver, platinum) and their role in healing chronic infection• The placebo effect as proof of the mind's power to heal the body✦ Find Peter McLaughlin:Website & healing tracks: blueskyhypnosis.comYouTube: @blueskyhypnosis✦ About Dr. Stephanie Canestraro:Dr. Stephanie is a chiropractor, functional medicine practitioner, and chronic illness survivor. Peter McLaughlin joins Andrea to explore what it means to look beneath the surface of pain, habits, and repeating relationship struggles. Peter shares how a leukemia diagnosis became the turning point that led him into hypnosis and subconscious work, opening a deeper investigation into the ways the mind, body, and spirit can all be part of the healing process. Together, they talk about why symptoms are not always the full story, how old trauma and subconscious patterns can keep people stuck, and why healing often requires more than willpower alone. Andrea and Peter also explore past lives, soul agreements, and the possibility that even painful experiences may carry meaning, lessons, or unfinished patterns that are asking to be understood differently. ✨ Learn more about Peter McLaughlin at https://www.blueskyhypnosis.com/Recorded: March 16th, 2026Episode Timestamps: 00:00 - Everything Has Meaning 00:25 - Welcome To What Resonates 00:56 - Meet Hypnotherapist Peter 02:36 - Leukemia Diagnosis Turning Point 05:07 - Mind Over Body Awakening 06:24 - Healing Results And Perspective 08:07 - Weight Loss Root Causes 11:44 - Metabolism Trauma And Context 13:30 - Past Lives And The Subconscious 16:44 - Sarno And Pain As Distraction 19:49 - Peter Method First Steps 21:57 - Pendulum Root Cause Testing 25:18 - Origins Of The Pendulum Approach 27:18 - Havening Explained And Used 30:15 - Hypnotic Safety Rewiring 31:07 - Therapy Tools Explained 32:15 - Culture Shift and Resilience 37:05 - Past Lives and Interlife 39:54 - Soul Contracts Story 45:09 - Relationships as Growth 48:39 - Changing Self Changes World 52:10 - Mind Power and Placebo 53:35 - Language Imagination Control 58:07 - Trust Intuition in AI 59:37 - Where to Find Peter 01:00:37 - Podcast Sign Off Join Andrea in the United Kingdom to learn Reiki in person in June 2026! From Betrayal to Breakthrough with Dr. Debi Silber | Guest: Peter McLaughlin About Peter McLaughlin Peter McLaughlin is a certified hypnotherapist and founder of Blue Sky Hypnosis. After being diagnosed simultaneously with Lyme disease and leukemia 23 years ago — and given just 10 years to live — Peter embarked on a profound healing journey that led him from Wall Street and a 50-person security company in Westchester, New York, into the world of mind-body medicine and hypnotherapy. Trained through a program founded by a former paramedic and focused on the medical applications of hypnosis, Peter also served as a volunteer firefighter and EMT, giving him a unique frontline perspective on trauma, shock, and the human response to crisis. Today he helps clients heal from emotional trauma — including infidelity, betrayal, and abuse — using hypnotherapy, havening, and subconscious reprogramming. Episode Overview In this episode, Dr. Debi sits down with Peter McLaughlin to explore the profound and often hidden role the subconscious mind plays in betrayal recovery. Peter shares his remarkable personal story of survival, and then dives deep into the tools and techniques — including hypnotherapy, the pendulum, the sway test, havening, and hypnotic regression — that can help betrayal survivors release the trauma stored in the body, update the subconscious mind, and finally break free from the cycle of chronic stress and pain. Key Topics Discussed Peter's life-altering dual diagnosis of Lyme disease and leukemia — and the journey it sparked Why the body is a feedback mechanism and how it signals unresolved trauma The subconscious mind, the autonomic nervous system, and the "safe vs. dangerous" classification system How betrayal gets lodged in the subconscious with no concept of time — and why healing requires updating that The power of epigenetics: how chronic stress upregulates dangerous genes, and how healing can reverse that What hypnotherapy is and how it differs from what most people imagine Havening: a rapid, EMDR-adjacent technique for releasing trauma — and when it doesn't work Hypnotic regression: going back to the moment of trauma to reprocess, reframe, and re-heal Working with guilt and shame as the root cause of blocked healing The pendulum and the sway test as tools for accessing subconscious wisdom How every major decision is ultimately emotional — and what that means for recovery The spiritual dimension of healing: trauma as a wake-up call, not a life sentence What it looks and feels like when you've truly healed: the body stops being hijacked Memorable Quotes "The diagnosis of leukemia wasn't the title of the book of my life. It was a chapter in there." — Peter McLaughlin "Every single decision we make is ultimately an emotional decision — and then our conscious mind steps in to justify it. The conscious mind is basically like a lawyer." — Peter McLaughlin "The subconscious mind has no concept of time. It could have happened 30 years ago and it's still treating it like a clear and present danger." — Peter McLaughlin "Toxins don't just take a physical form. They also take an energetic or emotional form. When you suffer a trauma, it gets lodged within you and begins exerting its effects." — Peter McLaughlin "You are not broken. You are already magnificence, endowed by God with a magnificence inside of you. None of this is a litmus test of your worth." — Peter McLaughlin "If I didn't go through my betrayals, I never would have entered the PhD program. The five stages would never have been discovered. That's trauma well served." — Dr. Debi Silber Key Concepts Explained Havening A therapeutic technique similar to EMDR that uses gentle touch on specific areas of the body to help release trauma stored in the nervous system. Peter finds it highly effective and fast-acting — but notes it doesn't work when a client is carrying unresolved guilt or shame, which blocks the subconscious from accepting relief. Hypnotic Regression A technique in which the therapist guides the client back — hypnotically — to the original moment of trauma. From there, the client can reprocess the event, release guilt, and even "negotiate" with the younger part of themselves still holding the pain. Often, an adult client works with their own younger self to provide the wisdom, protection, and reasoning that wasn'tavailable at the time. The Pendulum & The Sway Test Both are ideomotor tools — ways of accessing the body's subconscious signals. A pendulum amplifies micro-movements in the hand to indicate yes/no responses. The sway test involves standing and noticing whether your body leans forward (toward something safe or true) or backward (away from something negative or false). These tools can help identify buried emotions, assess the intensity of trauma, and track healing progress. Epigenetics & Healing Epigenetics refers to the way our environment — including our emotional state — turns genes on or off. Chronic stress upregulates genes associated with disease. Releasing emotional trauma and shifting out of fight-or-flight mode can change genetic expression in a healing direction. What Healing Looks Like According to Peter, you know you've truly healed when: The physiological "hijacking" stops — your heart no longer races, your palms no longer sweat when you think about what happened Intrusive thoughts fade and nightmares diminish You can be in the same circumstances that once triggered you without the same emotional response The emotional charge is gone — not repressed, but genuinely resolved The pendulum registers a zero on the intensity scale where it once showed a 10 Connect with Peter McLaughlin Website (relationship focus): PeterMcLaughlin.com Website (hypnosis & broader topics): BlueSkyHypnosis.com YouTube: 250+ free videos on hypnosis, hypnotherapy, overcoming infidelity trauma, divorce trauma, and more Resources from Dr. Debi & The PBT Institute Learn about the PBT Certification Program for coaches, therapists, and practitioners Get the book: UNSTUCK — The Practitioner's Guide to Moving Betrayal Clients from Survival to Transformation Subscribe to the From Betrayal to Breakthrough podcast for more expert conversations like this one If this episode resonated with you, share it with someone who needs to hear that healing is possible — and that what happened to them is not permanent, and not a reflection of their worth.

Send a textWhat if the story your body is telling began before you were born? We sit down with life coach and hypnotherapist Peter McLaughlin to trace a remarkable arc from a double diagnosis at forty-one to a two-decade practice helping people heal through intuition, regression, and the mind–body connection. Peter explains how emotions become biology, why epigenetic switches tilt under stress or calm, and how the right prompt can guide the subconscious straight to the moment a pattern began—whether in this life or another.Across the conversation, we ground big ideas in human moments: the jaw that grinds in sleep without permission, the spine a chiropractor aligns only for stored fear to pull it back, the client who could not board a plane until a wartime memory surfaced and released. We talk about free, guided hypnosis resources that make this work accessible, from inner child repair to past-life journeys, and why learning the felt-sense of safety reorients the nervous system more effectively than willpower ever could. Peter shares his daily practice of meeting spirit guides, the simple power of routine, walking in nature, yoga, and real sunlight for circadian and emotional health. We also widen the frame. Some realities don't fit the five-sense box, yet they steer our lives: thoughts that can't be weighed, observation changing outcomes, energy that moves before words. Rather than argue the metaphysics, we ask what helps. If conflict fuels growth, then challenges can be curriculum, not punishment. Regression can retrieve strengths as well as clear wounds; remembering a lifetime of healthy love trains you to recognise it now. The theme is agency through curiosity—ask better questions, follow what arises, and let humility keep the door open to what works.Listen to learn how to use intuitive prompts, hypnosis, and daily rituals to unwind long-held pain, shift stubborn habits, and reclaim patterns that serve you. Despite the protests and the anger of unionists, the Anglo-Irish Agreement endured under superseeded by the GFA. Some see it as a key factor in attracting Sinn Féin into the political process and by many as a vital factor in convincing unionism that it would have to concede to power-sharing with nationalists. Ciarán Dunbar spoke to Professor Fergal Cochran, to Unionist commentator Alex Kane, to Professor Graham Walker, and to Dr. Peter McLaughlin to discuss the long-term legacy and consequences of the Anglo-Irish Agreement. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Unionists felt that Margaret Thatcher was someone they could trust so when she signed the Anglo-Irish Agreement giving Dublin the right to be consulted over NI, unionists felt utterly betrayed and they were outraged. The UUP leader Jim Molyneax even called it an “an evil document.” Tens of thousands of unionists took to the streets of Belfast, a day forever remembered due to the DUP leader Ian Paisley's “never, never, never” speech. Professor Fergal Cochrane, Alex Kane, Professor Graham Walker, and Dr. Peter McLaughlin explain what happens when the Anglo-Irish Agreement is revealed and why. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The Hunger Strikes had led to a surge in support for Republicanism and in October 1984, Margaret Thatcher herself, narrowly escaped death in the Brighton bombing. Her intelligence chiefs were clear; they weren't going to defeat the IRA by purely military and security means – she decided something had to be done. Meanwhile in Dublin, fears over the rise of Sinn Féin and frustration with a lack of progress in advancing nationalists' interests led to an openness to fresh ideas. The stage was set for secret talks which led to the Anglo-Irish Agreement, signed on the 15 November 1985. Ulster's Unionists were outraged by what they saw as a betrayal. Rhodesia, now called the Republic of Zimbabwe, used to be a self-governing British colony. In November 1965, the Cabinet of Rhodesia unilaterally declared independence from Britain in an effort to preserve white minority rule. The Rhodesian Bush War, also known as the Rhodesian Civil War, followed. It lasted until December 1979. This protracted guerilla war pitted Rhodesia's globally isolated government against the African nationalist Zimbabwe African Nationalist Union (ZANU) and Zimbabwe African People's Union. Eventually ZANU prevailed and its leader, Robert Mugabe, was elected Prime Minister in February 1980. Paul Moorcraft and Peter MacLaughlin tell the story in “The Rhodesian War Fifty Years On”.

In this episode, Nimesh Radia interviews Peter McLaughlin, a hypnotist and healer, to explore the powerful metaphor of fire in the context of personal transformation. They discuss how everyone is experiencing internal fires of change, anxiety, and rebirth, emphasizing the need to accept and embrace these challenges as opportunities for growth and healing.Key Discussion Points:The Fires of Change: Nimesh and Peter discuss how fire serves as a metaphor for the intense energies of transformation. Everyone feels these internal fires, which can manifest as anxiety or emotional upheaval. These fires are not just to be endured but embraced as catalysts for profound personal growth.Working with Internal Fires: The discussion highlights the importance of choosing a response rather than reacting impulsively to these fires. Acknowledging the anxiety and chaos can feel overwhelming, but it's crucial to move from a state of control and resistance to acceptance and healing. Nimesh highlights the steps of Awareness, Acceptance, and Healing as a pathway through this transformative process.Addressing the Root Causes: The conversation underscores the need to look beyond symptoms and address the root causes of personal issues. Peter explains that much like pulling out a splinter allows a wound to heal, identifying and resolving the underlying causes of emotional pain can lead to true healing.Support Systems in Transformation: The importance of support—both human and spiritual—is emphasized throughout the conversation. Whether it's reaching out to friends, family, or guides like Nimesh and Peter, having a support system is vital. Spiritual guides, angels, or religious figures can also provide comfort and guidance during times of personal fire.Peter's Journey: Peter shares his personal transformation from a firefighter to a healer, demonstrating how his experiences in the field of fire management translate to managing the fires of the mind and spirit. His journey highlights the potential for personal evolution and the importance of finding and following one's path.Key Takeaways:Everyone is experiencing a form of rebirth, navigating internal fires of change and anxiety.Embracing rather than resisting these fires is key to personal and spiritual growth.Support systems, both human and spiritual, are essential for navigating the fires of transformation.Addressing the root causes of issues, rather than just symptoms, leads to deeper healing. The steps of Awareness, Acceptance, and Healing are vital to personal transformation.Choosing how to respond, rather than reacting, is crucial for growth and maintaining balance.Self-care is necessary to put oneself first and create space for healing.Healing is a continual process, with each experience offering lessons and opportunities for expansion.Journal Prompts:What areas of your life are you not putting yourself first? Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Deontology is not the solution, published by Peter McLaughlin on November 16, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This is a lightly-edited extract from a longer post I have been writing about the problems Effective Altruism has with power. That post will likely be uploaded soon, but I wanted to upload this extract first since I think it's especially relevant to the kind of reflection that is currently happening in this community, and because I think it's more polished than the rest of my work-in-progress. Thank you to Julian Hazell and Keir Bradwell for reading and commenting on an earlier draft. In the wake of revelations about FTX and Sam Bankman-Fried's behaviour, Effective Altruists have begun reflecting on how they might respond to this situation, and if the movement needs to reform itself before 'next time'. And I have begun to notice a pattern emerging: people saying that this fuck-up is evidence of too little 'deontology' in Effective Altruism. As this diagnosis goes, Bankman-Fried's behaviour was partly (though not entirely) the result of attitudes that are unfortunately general among Effective Altruists, such as a too-easy willingness to violate side-constraints, too little concern with honesty and transparency, and sometimes a lack of integrity. This thread by Dustin Moskovitz and this post by Julian Hazell both exemplify the conclusion that EA needs to be a bit more 'deontological'. I'm sympathetic here: I'm an ethics guy by background, and I think it's an important and insightful field. I understand that EA and longtermism emerged out of moral philosophy, that some of the movement's most prominent leaders are analytic ethicists in their day jobs, and that the language of the movement is (in large part) the language of analytic ethics. So it makes sense that EAs reach for ethical distinctions and ideas when trying to think about a question, such as ‘what went wrong with FTX?'. But I think that it is completely the wrong way to think about cases where people abuse their power, like Bankman-Fried abused his. The problem with the abuse of power is not simply that having power lets you do things that fuck over other people (in potentially self-defeating ways). You will always have opportunities to fuck people over for influence and leverage, and it is always possible, at least in principle, that you will get too carried away by your own vision and take these opportunities (even if they are self-defeating). This applies no matter if you are the President of the United States or if you're just asking your friend for £20; it applies even if you are purely altruistically motivated. However, morally thoughtful people tend to have good ‘intuitions' about everyday cases: it is these that common-sense morality was designed to handle. We know that it's wrong to take someone else's money and not pay it back; we know that it's typically wrong to lie solely for our own benefit; we understand that it's good to be trustworthy and honest. Indeed, in everyday contexts certain options are just entirely unthinkable. For example, a surgeon won't typically even ask themselves ‘should I cut up this patient and redistribute their organs to maximise utility?'—the idea to do such a thing would never even enter their mind—and you would probably be a bit uneasy with a surgeon who had indeed asked himself this question, even if he had concluded that he shouldn't cut you up. This kind of everyday moral reasoning is exactly what is captured by the kinds of deontological ‘side constraints' most often discussed in the Effective Altruism community. As this post makes wonderfully clear, the reason why even consequentialists should be concerned with side-constraints is because you can predict ahead of time that you will face certain kinds of situations, and you know that it would be better ...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Getting on a different train: can Effective Altruism avoid collapsing into absurdity?, published by Peter McLaughlin on October 7, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Thank you to Sam Atis, Robert Harling, Guive Assadi, Pranay Mittal, and Francis Priestland for comments on earlier drafts. The research for this post was supported by a grant from the FTX Future Fund Regranting Program. The train to crazy town Introduction Sam Atis, following on from some arguments by Scott Alexander, writes of ‘the train to Crazy Town'. As Sam presents it, there are a series of escalating challenges to utilitarian-style (and more broadly consequentialist-style) reasoning, leading further and further into absurdity. Sam himself bites the bullet on some classic cases, like the transplant problem and the repugnant conclusion, but is put off by some more difficult examples: Thomas Hurka's St Petersburg Paradox: Suppose you are offered a deal—you can press a button that has a 51% chance of creating a new world and doubling the total amount of utility, but a 49% chance of destroying the world and all utility in existence. If you want to maximise total expected utility, you ought to press the button—pressing the button has positive expected value. But the problem comes when you are asked whether you want to press the button again and again and again—at each point, the person trying to maximise expected utility ought to agree to press the button, but of course, eventually they will destroy everything. The Very Repugnant Conclusion: Once [utilitarians] assign some positive value, however small, to the creation of each person who has a weak preference for leading her life rather than no life, then how can they stop short of saying that some large number of such lives can compensate for the creation of lots of dreadful lives, lives in pain and torture that nobody would want to live? Most people, like Sam, try to get off the train before they reach the end of the line, trying to preserve some but not all of utilitarianism. And so the question is: how far are you willing to go? As a list of challenges to utilitarianism, I think Sam's post is lacking: he is very focussed on specific thought experiments, ignoring more theoretical objections that in my view are much more insightful. But as a provocation—how far will you go in your utilitarianism?—I think it's an extraordinarily useful post. Sam takes it upon himself to pose the following question: ‘what are the principles by which we should decide when to get off the train?' But something worries me about Sam's presentation. Who said you could actually get off the train to crazy town? Each additional challenge to utilitarian logic—each stop on the route—does not seem to assume any new premises: every problem is generated by the same basic starting point of impartially weighing up all people's experiences and preferences against each other. As such, there just might not be any principles you can use to justify biting this bullet but not that bullet—doing so might even be logically incoherent. Sam says that he does want to get off the train eventually, but it's not clear how he would do that. Alexander's original post suggests something closer to this view. He explains why he dislikes the Repugnant Conclusion and various other situations in which ‘longtermist'-style consequentialism goes awry, and then lays out the position he would take to avoid these conclusions ‘[i]f I had to play the philosophy game'. But, he writes, ‘I'm not sure I want to play the philosophy game.' He's not confident that his own partial theoretical compromise actually will avoid the absurdity (and rightly so), and he cares more about avoiding absurdity than he does about getting on the train. Mainstream commentators from outside Effective Altruism have made this point too. Step...

Information is out there. Look no further than the mobile device in your hands. In an instant, you have access to news stories and scientific research about topics from climate change to virus pandemics. But what happens when we encounter science and research that doesn't fit with our own beliefs or preconceptions? Are we rigid to change? What will it take to reconsider our own opinions when presented with new information? Dr. Peter McLaughlin, from Edinboro's Psychology Department, teaches critical thinking and research among his many classes for undergraduate students. He joins us today to discuss why some folks refuse to believe science and why some simply don't know how or where to find reliable sources. He also gives us some advice on how to think critically about ideas that are presented to us.
