Welcome to the Purple Patch podcast. This week we continue our series on Purple Patch Case Studies, where we hear first-hand experiences of time-starved athletes on their journey towards improved performance in sports and life. This week, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon welcomes Purple Patch athlete Ben Cooper to the show. Like most Purple Patch athletes, Ben has a lot on his plate. He is a managing director at a major real estate company based in London, and he is also a devoted father of a three-year-old. Despite his busy schedule, he juggles all his responsibilities while dealing with weekly travel obligations. Ben's life is complex and time-starved, but he is determined to make it all work. Two years ago, when Ben was first introduced to Matt and Purple Patch Fitness, he struggled. Ben was dealing with exhaustion, burnout, and mental health challenges stemming from the stress of having a child during the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many people at the time, he felt lost and overwhelmed. A former rugby player, Ben had lost his fitness, gained weight, had low energy, had terrible sleep, and had no idea how to break free from the negative cycle he was stuck in. In Ben's own words, he was surviving, not thriving.  Ben discusses his challenges in jumpstarting his athletic journey and the strategies he learned through his coaching relationship with Matt to incorporate movement into his daily routine. Ben and Matt discuss the profound impact this had on shifting Ben's mindset, ultimately leading him to happiness, control, improved health, and high performance in all areas of his life. In this episode of the Purple Patch Podcast, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon begins our case study series by examining the performance journeys of two prominent members of the Purple Patch Pro Squad, Matt Lieto and Meredith Kessler.  Matt and Meredith played a crucial role in the success of the Purple Patch Pro Squad and were instrumental in developing the coaching approach that is now central to Purple Patch Fitness. Matt shares insights on personal performance development based on the experiences of these two world-class triathletes who have excelled in their sport and beyond. Matt discusses their initial performance struggles, his coaching analysis and suggestions, and the results of their new approaches. About Meredith Kessler Meredith grew up in Columbus, Ohio where she was a 4-sport athlete and was inducted into her high school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Meredith went on to receive a Division I athletic scholarship at Syracuse University where she participated in field hockey and track. After graduation in 2000, she used her graduation money to purchase her first triathlon bike and entered a full Ironman (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run) two weeks later. From that moment on, she caught the spirit of IRONMAN competition and has not looked back. Since that first Ironman in 2000, Meredith has completed over 60 full Ironman races all over the United States and the world. She is an 11-time full-distance Ironman and 23-time half-distance Ironman champion. About Matt Lieto Matt Lieto has been involved in the endurance sports community for nearly two decades, but his journey to get there was quite unique. In 1998, Lieto was inspired to pursue a healthier lifestyle after watching his brother compete in the Ironman World Championship. He shed 80 pounds by skateboarding at a local park and since then has spent a significant amount of time as a professional triathlete and cyclist, participating in some of the world's most prestigious races such as the Ironman World Championships and the Unbound 200. Recently, he has been focusing on sharing his expertise by coaching, hosting a podcast, and serving as a lead commentator for Ironman events while making appearances on NBC, Peacock, RedbullTV, and other platforms. I often find myself falling into really deep drowsiness in the middle of the afternoon desperate for sleep. I try and battle through and I can certainly feel like it's impacting my focus and my productivity in the afternoon. I feel like I sleep okay. But I just wonder what I should try and do to improve my afternoon energy. Well, fast forward a few weeks and now we are sharing that the race is being postponed until 2024. Swimrun is indeed a rollercoaster of emotions because we have a new race alert to share! Swimrun Cape Cod is a new event taking place on Cape Cod in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. This is a point to point race through some of the inland ponds and it looks great. The race date is Sept. 16 and they are offering two distance options (a short course and a super short course) for both teams and solo athletes. A long course will be added in 2024. If that wasn't enough, sign up and use the code LOWTIDE to save 20% off of your registration!So we're still net plus one in the Western Hemisphere Swimruns department.Over in the UK, Swimrun Coniston announced their 2023 race date. The Full and Sprint course events will take place on Sept. 24 in the “wild and rugged UK landscape” of Coniston. We believe that the courses will be similar to the now defunct Breca race that used to take place in the area.Staying in the UK, “The Original Welsh Swimrun,” Love Swimrun Llanberis, is scheduled for June 17th and will offer a 6km sprint course and a 16km long course. According to their website, both courses are tough so make sure to check out that event!If you happen to be in the UK a week before Swimrun Llanberis, head on over to Nene Park, Peterborough in Cambridgeshire for As Keen as Mustard's event on June 10 and 11 offering everything from an intro friendly 5km to sporty 39km Swimrun distance options. In today's episode of the Purple Patch Podcast, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon takes us back to the core values of Purple Patch Fitness to help provide perspective on framing your performance mindset. The simple fact is, anything worthwhile is inherently difficult. The road to Kona is riddled with adversity. As is spearheading the drive for your team or company's success. Most of the time, that's part of the fun. The challenge is the game. The goal always requires commitment, consistency, and hard work, but as time-starved athletes, you are faced with an optimization challenge. Where do you make the time for family, work, and training? How do you fit the performance journey into your already crowded schedule? There are many approaches that pitch the “less is more” mindset or “the easy way to (insert goal here).” But there is no shortcut, quick fix, or expert trick. Is that something that applies to pro athletes? And does the answer change if you're talking about female athletes? I have had athletes that have very successfully been able to accumulate three weeks of consistent training, and not start to overreach or not start to get too tired. But in the middle of the bell curve, I've seen that most athletes don't succeed with that recipe. And that's because quite simply, you can't beat physiology. 11:56-Question 2 from Jeff: I have a question about race execution for someone who may not really like using data. I'd rather be following general cues tied to RPE. Do you have any general guidelines to follow? The power and the metrics, whether you use heart rate, whether you use power, whether you use pace on the run, they're really valuable. They're great to have, but they shouldn't be driving the ship. What should be driving the ship is you, your intuition. 18:57-Question 3 from Les: I'm curious to know your thoughts on race day hydration. My bike is set up to carry a 750 mil bottle between my aero bars and two more behind my seat and I'll need about one bottle an hour or so I'm thinking for Ironman Canada. What are your thoughts on how much to carry versus trying to mix it along the way with tablets? I would probably lead with one bottle behind, one up front and then you are refilling your chamber on an ongoing basis at the front torpedo system with water. But then having on the top of your handlebars or in your pockets, even on your thigh underneath your race suit, you might have the sachets of precision that you can rip pour into the chamber before you get to an aid station and then squeeze and dump water over the top of it so that you fill in the concentration. 26:29-Question 4 from Richard: One thing that's taken many minutes of my time is the logistics of bike aid stations. I've got dialed into a new hydration plan. I take electrolytes to add to the water but need to continually stop and sort things out on the bike, grab more nutrition and stash it somewhere. It feels a shame to spend more than five minutes stationary over an Ironman bike leg, but I can't figure out how else to do it. I would really recommend you have a torpedo at the front of the bike. That can really be a game changer for logistics and carriage because you can then grab water as you're in flight, slowing down being very safe, keeping that hand supple on the bar, grab the water and refill while you're on the go, dump that water bottle away, and now you've got a new reservoir. 31:43-Question 5 from Brian: Is it possible to still have occasional good races despite being in a state of chronic fatigue, and is it possible to lose touch with your level of fatigue? So what we need to look at is how much long term damage is there? How much recuperation do you need? And then also a little bit of an objective review of what's the ultimate root of the problem? And you're not going to say oh, it was that it was my nutrition, it was my training program, it was my lack of recovery, because it's always more holistic than that. Ask Matt Anything! Do it where you sight three to four times every single lap. Now at the start, that's going to slow you down. But your goal over many weeks is to start to narrow the delta between non-sighting swimming, and swimming where you're adding in sighting. And you can only do that by improving your technique. 18:02 - Question 2 from Frank: I'm wondering like with your statement “evolve or die” over the last few years - there's probably been a lot of changes to your own programs. How has the book changed? Some of the ways that we built the plan has changed a little bit - it's a little bit more dynamic. I would say, globally, we tend to stray more towards higher frequency running right now. And a higher percentage of that running been low stress. We've really amplified the intensity and strength endurance component of biking and even the way that we integrate some of our swim sessions has evolved. Finally, a huge shift is in the broader world around nutrition and fueling. To be honest, the paradigm has shifted and it's very, very different. 26:10 - Question 3 from Victoria: Feeling overwhelm as life returns to “normal.” Back to work, kids to school, long commutes, etc. and the stress is piling up. How best to handle this overwhelm while still balancing a training schedule? Stress is more complex and nuanced, because yes, unchecked and unmanaged, the accumulation of too much physiological or emotional strain can be really harmful. But perhaps paradoxically, it is exactly that strain, challenge, navigating adversity, that pressure, which is essential for anything that you care about - for your body, and your mind, to grow, to evolve and develop. So strain and demand is really, really important. 35:30 - Question 4 from Richard: How does a bike commute fit into the overall arc of my training schedule? Use it as a relief, a little bit of a bridge from the work day to going home…It is genuinely a little a bit of “me” time...I'm going to do it for myself, I'm going to enjoy it. It's soul filling, and I'm not under any real pressure to get stronger fitter, more powerful. 41:50 - Question 5 from Matt: If lower cadence is more of a natural strength, does that mean I should race at a lower RPM say 80 to 85 than the 90 to 95 I've always targeted in the past? When you go outside and you come up against a grade or a hill, or you've got wind in your face, it's a useful and smart tool to shift into generally a lower cadence. On the flipside, if you've got the wind at your back, or you've got a downhill, you might see power drop a little bit lower, but you're gonna shift to a faster cadence. And finally, if you want to vary the load, the postural load, you want to shift the muscle group, you might go lower or higher, depending on when you're at. Joining us on this episode is two-time ÖTILLÖ finisher Anna Lundberg who give us a her perspective on the race from the middle of the pack and three-time finisher (and walking knowledge bomb) Andy Blow, Co-founder of Precision Fuel and Hydration, who shares with us a roadmap for training our “gut” for the big dance.How's the Body? How's the Mind?When we started this show in 2020 our thought was to help grow the sport but also share our journey. A defining component of Purple Patch Fitness is our highly distinct methodology and approach that frames a way of thinking and performance in both sport and life. Most think about Purple Patch as building a strong platform of health, and assisting time-starved athletes to thrive within limited training hours, and a strong focus on supporting habits, such as nutrition, strength, and sleep. The good news? So many have bought into this approach via our coaching and education resources, but there are still many who struggle to apply the acquired knowledge across several area including: Post-Workout Fueling - many recognize that proper fueling is part of the performance puzzle, but it's one of the things people fall down on consistently. Going Easy on the Easy Days - Inherently, we know this is a key to progression, but that logic is often overridden by fear and motivation for great success Strength Training - Again, while many appreciate the value of strength training to overall performance, it is often the first pillar to drop in lieu of chasing more hours. We inherently know what to do, but we still don't do it. The same holds true for what we label, Postseason Training. Matt shares the story of one of his athletes, John, who inherently ends his season frustrated at his performance plateaus. He finishes in the Fall and turns his back on any structured training for months, only to come back at the start of the year with a sense of urgency to "catch up" - leading to niggles, burnout, overtraining, and, subsequently, his frustration. He knows that he should maintain some structure and strategic consistency, but still doesn't do it. Is this you? Are you either all-in or all-out? Today, Matt outlines groundwork on how to be proactive in your performance journey. Yes, you can dial back your load, but still maintain consistency, enjoy your training more, reduce your risk for injuries, and continue to improve your performance, all while being smart and proactive. Welcome to Gear Talk with Annie and Brooke from Swimrun Labs.In this episode, we do a deep dive into Swim Paddles for Swimrun. If you’re new to Swimrun you’ve probably seen photos or videos of races with folks wearing giant paddles, and other swimrun gear, as part of the race kit. We discuss why paddles are so ubiquitous in Swimrun, how to minimize your risk of injury in using paddles, and we have a discussion of what paddles we’ve used, and why. Gear Updates/First ImpressionsThe Ark Sports ORNÖ 02 sagas continue with Chipper developing a hole in the sleeve area of his suit. He applied a patch kit. He got some advice from Annie on how to fix it and reached out to Ark Sports for more advice on how to patch the hole. We shall see how that holds up and report back.Main Discussion: Swim PaddlesHistory of Using Swim Paddles in SwimrunAs the sport of Swimrun has evolved over the last 15 years, the ability of teams to get from point A to point B as quickly as possible (while wearing a full kit) has resulted in a lot of optimization for forwarding propulsion during the swim legs. Over the years the pattern that emerged was using a big pull buoy (such as the Ark Sports Keel) coupled with a large set of swim paddles as the established method for most speed. As you will see below, the answer to whether swimming with giant paddles makes you faster is that “it depends.” It depends on a lot of factors that we will discuss below.Swim Paddle Education We chatted with Coach John Stevens for his advice on paddles.Legend has it that John was actually born with paddles on his hands. He is the only Swimrunner we’ve ever heard of with a stroke so powerful that he actually cracked a paddle in half while swimming. One of the strongest swimmers on the US Swimrun circuit, John and his partner have won Odyssey Casco Bay every year of its running since 2016. He has coached swimming at many levels and currently offers his coaching services to triathletes and Swimrun athletes through Purple Patch Fitness.Should every Swimrunner use paddles?Every Swimrun athlete should aspire to use paddles, but it may not be the right thing off the bat. For example- my Swimrun partner Matt Hurley couldn’t translate paddles to his stroke, it slowed his cadence too much and actually slowed him down. Do it unless you have a hx of shoulder issues, and make sure you’re in shape swimming wise and your form is there.What guidelines and technique elements should someone keep in mind if they are interested in safely and sustainably using paddles?Work on the catch. If you’re dropping the elbow on the catch you’re pulling with just your hand and putting a strain on the bicep and rotator cuff. The idea is a high elbow allows you to scoop water with your forearm too and engage your lats.If you know you have a tendency to drop your elbow, build into paddles very intentionally.If you push out to the side to balance your breath stroke or do the keyhole or S, you are also liable for injury with paddles.Midline cross over is another liability.Elements in Swimrun such as shoes, wetsuit, and pull buoy cause less rotation, more of a square swim stroke is actually better for Swimrun and better for injury prevention with paddles. don’t let your arm move out or in, keep it it’s lane and elbow high.Injury Prevention when using Paddles for SwimrunThis is obviously super important because we don’t want anyone getting hurt trying to keep up with Joneses. Brooke wrote a pretty detailed article all about shoulder injury prevention in Swimrun that we recommend that everyone check out. Are Bigger (Paddles) Better?Coach John weighed in on this question as well.How can an athlete determine optimal paddle size, and what are the pitfalls of a paddle that’s too large vs. a paddle that’s too small?Always start smaller than you think you need and build into it. Even if you’re advanced, start small.If your turnover has slowed down, your paddle is too big and you’re likely depowering your stroke.Elements of the course should be taken into account when decided what size paddles to use.We are seeing a paddle size trend to a larger and larger paddle among European racers- should we follow suit?NO. This works for very few people. Be honest about how strong of a swimmer you are. Do you have resiliency build up in your shoulders? If you are this person, you’re probably a lifelong swimmer, you’ve probably used paddles and know how to use them.Flat vs. curved- any thoughts?Fan of flat. Allow you to get a hold of the water and pull more directly.Always look for holes in the flat paddle- the more the better and if there are no holes you might as well consider them to be the next size up because there is so much more resistance.Curved paddles don’t hold water as well per John’s opinionFinally, we asked Coach John about what paddles he uses and why.Favorite paddle- what do you use for training and racing?2 or 3 different size paddles: small for shorter faster stuff with higher cadence arm turnoverTempo or longer and harder = medium size paddleEndurance or aerobic pace long sessions= large paddles to just build strengthAfter taking time off a couple of years ago for an injury he transitioned from using med size paddles for racing down to small.Big paddles were out because: shoulder injury, front swimmer, slow cadenceStrokemaker- tried and true and huge range of sizes, very durableAlso likes the ark paddle, it’s a lot lighter. Can’t say he notices the weight when swimming, they are nice for stuffing in your wetsuit.Durability is really key in Swimrun- the lighter the less durable and encountering rocks in transition is notorious for snapping paddles.What Swimrun Paddles Are We UsingChipper:Roka Pro Swim Paddles $23 (For Training)Ark Blade $32 (For Racing)Chris:Roka Pro Swim Paddles $23 (Currently using these for training and racing)Speedo Power Plus Paddles $19.99 (Previously used these for training)Brooke and Annie:Finis Agility Paddles $21.99 (For Training)Synergy Power Swim Paddles $8.95 (For Racing)Final ThoughtsWe can say with some certainty that using paddles will make you faster but that comes with some caveats. First, make sure that you ease into using paddles to make sure that you build up strength and technique. Strength building and Injury prevention should be the top priority as you start using paddles. Check out this article on Swimrunlabs.com for an amazing resource on shoulder injury prevention in swimrun. Second, bigger isn’t always better…when it comes to swimming paddles. Take into account your strength and technique as well as the racecourse that you are training for. Wind, waves, and currents can definitely minimize any potential speed gains in using giant paddles and destroy your shoulders in the process.Finally, take into account durability. Make sure whatever paddles you end up using are strong enough to handle rocky swim exits and everything else that can come at you during a race. Nothing derails a race faster than having gear issues so think ahead about replacing straps and checking for cracks before something breaks.That’s it for this week’s Gear Talk show. “I see coaching as an art form—and it's the science [that] gives you the tools that you need—but just like we found out that you tie two strings together and you pluck it, it reverberates and it makes a noise, it doesn't mean you can play Little Wing on the guitar. So we know what physiology looks like, what blood flow looks like, what muscle function looks like, but taking that and putting it into a program for a human being, to me, is an art form and that is an infinite pursuit.” Michael Olzinski is a good friend, coaching colleague, and occasional training partner of mine. He's one of the most interesting people I know as well as one of the smartest guys I've ever met. He's got a Masters degree in exercise physiology and primarily coaches triathletes as a member of the staff at Purple Patch Fitness. He's also the co-founder and head coach of the Nth Degree Athletic Club, one of the most popular and fastest-growing run crews in San Francisco. Mike played hockey and lacrosse through college but took an interest in endurance sports while in grad school and has never looked back. He started running road races before transitioning to triathlon for a while and, in recent years, he's actually put on the spikes and competed in middle-distance races on the track. Welcome to episode three of the Low Tide Boyz, a swimrun podcast!On this week’s show we chat about ramping up our training for Catalina and our swim build workout plan that was written by this show’s special guest, Michael Olzinski. More about him later.We started swimming at a great outdoor Olympic-sized pool that is a huge upgrade from our current crappy 25 yard pool at our crappy gym. Long course swimming has been a great addition to our training given that swimrun is all about swimming long. We’ve started dialing up the swim volume and have been putting in some diabolical sets, curtesy of today’s guest!We’ve gotten some great feedback about our Swimrun 101 episode so thank you for that. It was also brought to our attention that we didn’t talk about socks and what to wear under a wetsuit. For both of these it comes down to personal preference and we recommend testing whatever you’re going to use before the race. We are lucky to have Michael Olzinski on the show this week. He’s a multisport coach with Purple Patch Fitness. He’s a stout athlete in his own right, has a ton of coaching certifications and he’s joining us to chat about swimrun training. Mike first heard about swimrun when some of Purple Patch’s international athletes started asking for training plans to their races.We chatted with Mike about how to best train for swimrun, focusing on the Otillo Catalina course…since that’s what we have coming up. Acknowledging that training for these events are really an experiment in training and while there are some analogies to events like super league triathlon, where there are multiple short sets of swimming, biking and running. The overarching idea though is that swimrun athletes have to be just that, athletes. As much as swimrun is a swimming and running sport, there’s a lot of room for strength training to handle the impact on your legs and shoulders from all the transitions. This is especially true for newer athletes to the sport. Mike also recommends combining running and swimming often and mix it up to develop the adaptation for transitioning back and forth.Courses like Otillo’s Catalina World Series race be aerobic event but it will have a lot of spikes and drops in effort levels and, as such, training should have a lot of fartleks thrown in to simulate the spikes in effort that athletes will experience during a race. For swim workouts, Mike is a big fan of doing deck ups at the pool. These are great for getting the body adapted to transitioning from swimming to running. Mike also recommends that during swimming sets, that it’s not necessary to do all your swims with paddles and buoy. Use paddles and buoy mostly for key sets in the water. Adding an ankle strap is also great. Mike recommends trying some fartlek swimming in open water and using swim strokes to count off the sets, such as 30 hard and 30 recovery, then 20 hard and 30 recovery and so forth. Finally, Mike recommends doing a lot of strength and core work to help with maintaining proper posture during long endurance efforts in the water and on land. This week’s guest is another coach.  In fact, he is a UK coach although you are more likely to find him in the US these days.  Matt Dixon is well known in the triathlon world as founder and owner of Purple Patch Fitness, based in San Francisco.  He coaches age group athletes and professionals including Sam Appleton, Kevin Collington, Sara Pampiano, and UK Ironman pro Laura Siddall.  He has also written a couple of books and he has his own podcast (links below).  He is also the head coach for the Ironman Executive Challenge and is a presenter for Ironman University. 03 Sami Inkinen - How a Time-Starved CEO Creates Sustainable High Performance

In this eye-opening episode, Matt goes one-on-one with one of his athletes, Sami Inkinen. Growing up on a farm in Finland, Sami was always intrigued by health, wellness, and athletic performance. He did ride his bike or cross-country ski to-and-from school most days, after all! He moved to the United States in 2003 to attend Stanford Business School, and it's there where he met his friend and business partner, Pete Flint, and, together, they founded Trulia, eventually turning it public. Today, he is the CEO and Founder of Virta Health, a company on a mission to reverse Type 2 Diabetes in 100 million people by 2025. It was a revelation about his own health that was the catalyst for this new mission. You see, even though Sami was and still is a top performer both in sport and life, he made the mistake that so many of us make: burning the candle at both ends. “In 2008,” he says, “I had a view that the more hours you train, the faster you become and the more hours you work, the more effective you are.” That way of life led to frequent bouts of flu and fever. Even worse, he recalls, he was forgetting common words and names. He didn’t realize at the time, but he was also on his way to becoming pre-diabetic. This way of life is a slippery slope for a high-performing athlete and CEO, which is why Purple Patch Fitness and the Matt Dixon “Pillars of Performance” were such a good fit for Inkinen. He put these philosophies into practice during his triathlon training and the results have been astonishing. Here are just a few of Sami’s achievements: Overall amateur champion at Wildflower Triathlon Long Course, Alcatraz and Hawaii 70.3 Age group world champion at the IRONMAN 70.3. distance Two sub-9 hour races at the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona Personal Best of 8:24 IRONMAN finish time Surely an athlete with these results must train upwards of 20-25 hours per week! Not in this case. Sami did this all on a recipe of 10-12 hours per week. How is this possible? Well, discipline and trust are two ingredients in this equation.
