Brian #1: mdformat Suggested by Matthias Schöttle Last episode Michael covered blacken-docs, and I mentioned it'd be nice to have an autoformatter for text markdown. Matthias delivered with suggesting mdformat “Mdformat is an opinionated Markdown formatter that can be used to enforce a consistent style in Markdown files.” A python project that can be run on the command line. Uses a style guide I mostly agree with. I'm not a huge fan of numbered list items all being “1.”, but that can be turned off with --number, so I'm happy. Converts underlined headings to #, ##, etc. headings. Lots of other sane conventions. The numbering thing is also sane, I just think it also makes the raw markdown hard to read. Has a plugin system to format code blocks Michael #2: pre-commit-uv via Ben Falk Use uv to create virtual environments and install packages for pre-commit. Dr. Friday clarifies that while most inherited life insurance proceeds are tax-free, cashing in a whole life policy can result in taxable gains due to accumulated growth. Transcript – Formatted for readability: G’day, I’m Dr. Friday, president of Dr. Friday’s Tax and Financial Firm. To get more info, go to www.drfriday.com. This is a one-minute moment. I was asked a question last week about life insurance: Is it always tax-free? And the answer is no. It’s not always tax-free. One of the main things to consider with life insurance is that if you cash in your own policy—particularly whole life—sometimes people reach a point where they no longer need it. If you do cash it in, the gain on the amount paid is taxable income because it’s considered growth, much like investing in a stock or savings bond. So, keep in mind that if you inherit a policy or receive life insurance proceeds after someone passes away, 99% of the time, that money is tax-free. Transcript – Formatted for readability: G’day, I’m Dr. Friday, president of Dr. Friday’s Tax and Financial Firm. To get more info, go to www.drfriday.com. This is a one-minute moment. Gifting friends and/or family—$18,000 in 2024 is the annual exclusion. Anything over that, you need to file a gift tax return. But remember, lifetime gifting is $13 million, so you have a little wiggle room to understand how much to give. You do not have to give it to a family member; you can give it to someone on the street—it doesn’t make a difference. The person giving the money is responsible for any taxes that could be due, while the person receiving the money will not pay taxes. Important to understand. Dr. Friday breaks down estate tax thresholds under the latest law and offers planning tips using trusts and gifting to avoid a steep 40% tax rate. Transcript – Formatted for readability: G’day, I’m Dr. Friday, president of Dr. Friday’s Tax and Financial Firm. To get more info, go to www.drfriday.com. This is a one-minute moment. Estate tax. Most of us are not going to really worry about estate tax because, under the newest tax law, the exemption is $13,610 for an individual and $27,220 for a married couple. That’s quite a bit to exceed. And then if you do exceed that, the tax would be 40%, which is pretty steep when you think about it. So, making sure you have a good tax plan by setting up a trust—an A, B trust if you happen to have a large estate—and considering gifting money away is advisable. I mean, I’m sure anyone with a good tax planner will help figure out a charity trust and all those—they’ll put more money in your hot pocket. You need help; call 615-367-0819. IRA required minimum distributions. If you did not already take your 20-24, I want to let you know you’re late. They can assess a 50% penalty on whatever you did not take out. So if you’re only taking out $5,000, the penalty could be $2,500. There are ways to request a waiver, and the IRS has been pretty lenient on that. So, make sure you do that, and ensure you’re set up to take it. And this is not just for people over the age of 73 on RMDs but also if you inherited an IRA and are required to take the money out. There's a lot of ways that trope is defined, but for us here on DOGS ARE SMARTER THAN PEOPLE, we're going with the Grammarist's definition, which is: “A trope is simply a common or recurring theme or method used in storytelling across all forms of media. Tropes serve as a way for creators to convey certain ideas and messages to their audience in a familiar and recognizable way.” They go on to write, “Think of the last book you read or a movie you recently watched. Did you reach a point where you could predict what was going to happen? Or did a character arise, and you immediately know it was the villain? That's because the creator used tropes to build up the idea or the character.” So, tropes create expectations in the reader, right? They are things that reoccur across films or books or songs or art that create an expectation and often have a symbolic meaning (but not always). Those who hate them say that they are overdone, so passe, boring. Those who love them say that they give comfort and can be used to powerfully convey referential meaning. Or as ThePleasurePen writes, “Tropes are not just narrative tools; they are also key in setting and sometimes subverting the expectations of your audience. Mastering this dynamic can elevate your storytelling, making your tales both satisfying and surprising.” Tropes can create those expectations and subvert them or twist them or use them to shape stories. That's because story doesn't stop at the writer, right? Story is communication between the writer and the reader and tropes help the reader understand what you're putting down there. Tropes are patterns. Patterns light up the readers' brains in certain ways. Here's a way to think about it: You're watching a horror movie. There's ominous music, a woman looks over her shoulder and then a man appears in front of her on the sidewalk. She jumps. We jump. The music and look over her shoulder create that expectation. The frame of the camera also helps create the suspense for a potential shock. It's a jump scare. But how do you do this in a book? That's the question, right? Usually, that's done via suspense. In the book, THE TWISTED ONES, author T. Kingfisher has a woodpecker that the main character, Mouse, hears every night. Mouse hears that damn woodpecker every time she's trying to fall asleep. Night after night. And then . . . as Ferrett Steinmetz writes for Tor . . . “she realizes the things moving about in the night are living effigies, piles of bones tied together and somehow animated, and what she's hearing is not a woodpecker but the stones hanging from the effigy's ribcage knocking together as it's been lurking outside her window this whole time. “The delight of The Twisted Ones is how much the narrative implies, and how cunningly, without filling in all the blanks—it's packed with subtle horrors left to fester as you take the thought further than the protagonist does.” Other examples of tropes in horror are found footage or creepy clowns or the group splitting up to investigate or whatever when there's a serial killer outside (or inside) the cabin in the woods. A trope in romance might be, oh no we have to share a hotel room. That sort of thing. Paul Jenkins writes on Brilliantio, “There are countless literary tropes – from the misunderstood villain to the unexpected hero and everything in between. These classifications provide an essential framework for understanding how narratives are constructed and how audience expectations are managed. “Moreover, Trope Evolution plays a significant role in establishing these norms over time. As cultures change and evolve, so do our stories and the tropes within them. For instance, the ‘damsel in distress' trope has evolved significantly with societal changes reflecting stronger female characters who save themselves. So remember this: every time you see a familiar plot twist or character type crop up in your reading journey—it's not lazy writing but rather an intentional use of trope to craft a predictable narrative arc satisfying your innate longing for patterned storytelling. Understanding this helps deepen your appreciation of literature's artistry and complexity.” COOL EXERCISES There are a zillion cool plot twist ideas and exercises here: Plot Twist Ideas and Prompts for Writers. On this day in legal history, October 11, 1872, Chief Justice Harlan Stone was born – but he wasn't born the Chief Justice. He was appointed much later when he was an adult. Harlan Fiske Stone was an American jurist who served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1925 to 1941 and then as the 12th Chief Justice of the United States from 1941 until his death in 1946. Born on October 11, 1872, in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, Stone was initially a law professor and later the dean at Columbia Law School. He was appointed by President Calvin Coolidge to the Supreme Court and was later elevated to Chief Justice by Franklin D. Roosevelt. One of Stone's significant contributions to American jurisprudence came in the case of International Shoe Co. v. Washington (1945). In this landmark decision, the mere name of which gives anyone who attended law school hives, Stone formulated the "minimum contacts" test, which has become a cornerstone in the area of personal jurisdiction in civil cases. The ruling clarified the circumstances under which an out-of-state corporation could be subject to the jurisdiction of local courts, thereby modernizing jurisdictional rules to fit a growing national economy.Stone is perhaps best known for his "Footnote Four" in the landmark case of United States v. Carolene Products Co. (1938), which laid the groundwork for the modern tiers of judicial scrutiny and the protection of minority rights. He also authored the majority opinion in the case of United States v. Darby Lumber Co. (1941), which upheld the Fair Labor Standards Act and confirmed Congress's power to regulate labor conditions.Another case that drew significant attention during Stone's tenure was Korematsu v. United States (1944). Although Stone did not write the majority opinion, he was part of the court that upheld the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. This decision has been widely criticized for its stance on civil liberties and is often cited as a low point in the Court's history. Stone's own views on the case have been the subject of much scholarly debate, given his generally liberal leanings on civil rights issues.Stone was known for his judicial integrity and liberal jurisprudence, often siding with Justices Louis Brandeis and Benjamin Cardozo on progressive interpretations of the Constitution. His tenure as Chief Justice was marked by a number of key decisions that expanded civil liberties and federal power, shaping American constitutional law for generations to come. The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear an appeal from 12 Republican-led states challenging the Biden administration's estimates for the social cost of greenhouse gas emissions. The high court left in place a federal appeals court decision, stating that the states, led by Missouri, lacked the legal standing to sue as they hadn't suffered a concrete injury. The Biden administration's estimates are intended to guide federal agencies in assessing the climate impact of various projects and in formulating new regulations. These estimates could influence a wide range of sectors, including oil and gas, agriculture, and construction. The decision follows a previous Supreme Court action that blocked an attempt to reinstate former President Trump's less stringent cost-estimation policy.Supreme Court Rejects GOP-Led States on Biden Climate EstimatesThe U.S. Supreme Court has chosen not to review the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) decision to reject Avail Vapor's application for marketing flavored e-cigarettes. Avail Vapor had argued that the FDA altered its application process for new tobacco products at the last minute, leading to a 99% rejection rate for e-cigarette applications. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit had previously sided with the FDA, stating that Avail failed to demonstrate that its products offered benefits to adults that outweighed the risks to young people. Avail contends that many adult smokers use e-cigarettes as a quitting aid. FDA Win on Flavored E-Cigarettes Won't Be Undone by JusticesIn an unusual legal move, Judge Jerry E. Smith of the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit added what he called the "opinion that should have been issued" to his dissent in a death penalty case. The majority decision had maintained a pause on a Texas man's scheduled execution, a decision Smith labeled as "grave error." Instead of elaborating on his dissent, Smith attached an opinion styled as a majority ruling, even including the names of the other two judges on the panel. Texas prosecutors later cited Smith's opinion in their request to the Supreme Court to proceed with the execution, which was subsequently granted.Legal experts have noted that this approach is atypical. Tad Bartlett, an attorney who has reviewed all of the Fifth Circuit's decisions over the past three years, said he had never seen a dissenting opinion formatted this way. He speculated that Smith's opinion might have initially been a draft that became a dissent when it was clear he didn't have the majority support. Given the expedited nature of death penalty cases, Smith may have retained the original formatting to save time. The majority ruling indicated that another judge on the panel, Judge James E. Graves Jr., would issue his own concurring opinion, which was later included in an amended majority opinion. Stacy Rogers Sharp, an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Austin School of Law, warned that Smith's unusual approach could blur the lines between what is or is not the law, potentially undermining the majority opinion.Fifth Circuit Judge Adds Alternate Majority Opinion to Dissent (2)Legal experts predict that the U.S. Supreme Court may narrow or even overturn the Chevron Doctrine, a precedent that has significantly shaped the modern administrative state. The doctrine, established in Chevron v. Natural Resources Defense Council, allows courts to defer to federal agencies' interpretations of ambiguous statutes. Bertrall Ross, a law professor, suggests that the Court is also likely to use the major questions and non-delegation doctrines to further limit agency power. A ruling that diminishes Chevron deference would require courts to interpret statutes more frequently and could create additional legislative work for Congress.Professor Allison Orr Larsen believes that the Court may limit Chevron deference to cases involving "genuine ambiguities" in statutory text. Ross adds that Congress might have to revisit statutes regularly if agencies can't resolve ambiguities. He also notes that the Court's recent decisions indicate a preference for major political issues to be handled by Congress rather than agencies. Meaghan VerGow, a legal partner, points out that another case, SEC v. Jarkesy, raises questions about the president's ability to remove administrative law judges, which could potentially create due process issues.Avid fans of Minimum Competence will remember we did a special Max Min episode on both Chevron Deference and the Major Questions Doctrine. Expect Narrowing of Chevron Doctrine, High Court Watchers SayThe fraud trial of Sam Bankman-Fried, related to the collapse of his FTX cryptocurrency exchange, is set to continue with further testimony from Caroline Ellison, a key witness and former co-head of Bankman-Fried's hedge fund, Alameda Research. Ellison has already testified that she was part of a multi-billion-dollar conspiracy led by Bankman-Fried to defraud FTX customers, investors, and lenders. She is among three former insiders who have pleaded guilty to fraud and are cooperating with prosecutors. Ellison revealed that the hedge fund used about $10 billion in FTX customer funds to repay debts and make investments. She also stated that Bankman-Fried, who is her former boss and occasional romantic partner, was indifferent to the risks associated with Alameda's lending and investment strategies. Prosecutors allege that Bankman-Fried misused billions in customer funds to support Alameda, purchase real estate, and donate over $100 million to U.S. political campaigns. Bankman-Fried has pleaded not guilty to the charges, arguing that while he made mistakes, he did not intend to steal funds. In his opening statement, defense lawyer Mark Cohen urged jurors to question the credibility of cooperating witnesses like Ellison, suggesting they might be reinterpreting past decisions to appear more nefarious. Gary Wang, FTX's former technology chief, also testified that Bankman-Fried falsely claimed FTX was stable as it faced a surge in withdrawal demands. The trial, which could last up to six weeks, is also expected to feature testimony from another cooperating witness, former FTX engineering chief Nishad Singh.Sam Bankman-Fried's trial to resume with more testimony from Caroline Ellison | Reuters Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Please see the in-depth autopsy of my guest's marketing plan, what worked, what failed, what has potential but needs more effort.TRBM Podcast Followup AutopsyIntroductionWrote a series of four sci-fi novellas, set in a future earth built of purely biological technologyFirst time writing long-form fictionTook me ~two years from the start of serious writing to self-publishing.Produced 4 novella series = ~160 k words = ~ 2 novels equivalentLaunched as ebooks in May this year.Four ebooks bundled together in June. The paperback bundle is out now as well.Primary aims of the first book project:1. Learn all the stages of writing (concept, outlines, drafting, editing).2. Learn all stages of production (covers, blurbs, formatting, website, self-publishing).3. Learn the basics of self-promotion (email list, podcasts, social media, no paid advertising). Most important aim- do all these things and still want to write another book afterwards.Advice suggests that paid advertising has higher ROI when you have a decent back catalogue. The Autopsy1. WritingDrafted the story twice as a novel- the original POV character didn't work (passive/unlikeable).Covid fever dream helped me reimagine the story from four minor character POVs.Drafted all four stories first to maintain momentum. Each took a bit over a month writing 2-3k words a day.Followed Heinlein approach to writing (light edit yesterday's draft then continue if >70% right).Redrafted book 2 (too short, lacked interiority) and book 4 (lacked interiority, ending wrong).Drafting took ~1.5 years (most of that spent on discarded original attempts).Editing took ~6 months.Paid professional to proofread book 1 (then applied patterns to other books).Fixed about a dozen minor typos in books 2-4 after ebooks were published.Printed 10 copies of the first novella for a local novel reading group to critique.Too shy for a group discussion with me so made a questionnaire.9/10 hated it, but 1/10 loved it (the group hated Oryx and Crake/mostly read historical/romance).2. ProductionFirst experimented with microphotography for covers- technical hurdles were too much.Made my covers in Adobe Illustrator (weird orphan genre, didn't know what I wanted).Revisited them over 12 months many times (up to 30 versions- substack post on the process).Provided a nice shift in focus between drafting/editing different books.A/B tested covers on social media (people love doing this).Wrote and rewrote blurbs over 12 months.A/B tested again (bit less enthusiastic, but useful feedback).Formatted in Atticus (cheaper option, ugly table of contents but otherwise nice).Website built by web developer friend (generous favour to practice their new skills).Self-published on Amazon in April.Put book 1 in KU for the first few months as lead magnet to series.3. Self PromotionEmail list at a mere 42.Put out monthly updates including illustrated cartoon of weird biologyMailing list swaps? (Weird orphan subgenre?)Appeared on a half dozen podcasts (mostly writing/science/experimental farming-> not ideal audience to market to, but chicken and egg issue with pitching scifi-focused podcasts)Joined twitter (hate it), Facebook (dead), reddit (dying), substack (crickets, but not very active).Weekly experimental farming substack doing well though- sometimes cross-promote.Readers demanded I activate paid subscriptions to support me (made x4 my ebook sales).Created a YouTube channel.Used AI narration to create animated book blurb YouTube shorts.Converted book 1 into an AI audiobook at put it up for free on YouTube (upload to Kobo?).Created a few biology-heavy scifi review videos (some traction, but a lot of work).Reached ten Amazon reviews, got into a Book Barbarian promotion.Minor spike in sales the day after.Flatlined every since (Amazon debut boost expired?).Sold a total of 77 ebooks. Made more money on my farming substack without trying.Novel writing turned out to be a worse way to make money than selling weird seeds. Was busily deciding which book to write next, following advice to crank out next book asap, when the harsh reality of writing self-published novels made me pause.GPT/AI hype craze happened.Seriously considered the viability of long-form text fiction versus alternative channels for creativity.Paused writing other than farm Substack for a few weeks.Focused on my neglected farm.Tried to stop writing but the next story idea kept buzzing in my head. Started writing it again (a dark 80s nostalgia magic realism story called “Anubis Laughed”).Looks like I achieved my ultimate goal of wanting to keep writing in the end.USE THIS LINK TO BUY MY NOVELCosts (cheapest to most expensive)Book funnel- ARC distribution- 29 (could have done without)Book barbarian promo- 63 (net negative, but not expensive)Print out local reading group reviews- 70 (waste of time without matching reader tastes)Copyright - 124 (optional, but may be useful later)Website domain- 138 (friend built website) (very lucky, could have used drag and drop alternative)ISBNs (x10)- 143 (essential)AI Narration- Elevenlabs 180 (valuable tool to learn for other projects)Proof reading- 216 (worthwhile)Formatting- Atticus 220 (saved some hassle, could have learnt to format in Word for more control)Amazon Keywords- Fiverr- 61 + Pubrocket - 178 (total waste of time- not chasing SEO niches)Cover design- Illustrator - 320 (five covers + promo material)(worthwhile- building skills for future)Total expenses of - 1680~300 under budget.Sales since April 202377 ebook sales on Amazon.1 ebook sale on Kobo.1 paperback sale.2.99 per novella, 7.99 for whole series, 19.99 paperback.1000 pages read on KU (since delisted).Estimated royalties- 180.ReflectionsLove building up for month of dedicated drafting.Drafting and self-promotion are incompatible- separate in time.Editing and self-promotion can happen together.Intend to write more short stories - should get back to submitting to magazines again.Intend to try another genre next (sort of magic realism “Anubis Laughed”).When the world is destroyed in 2013, the Egyptian gods send a struggling teacher back to his first day of school in 1984 to write a novel and save his soul from eternal torment.Side Project: Can GPT Destroy the Online Advertising Model?Wondered if LLMs could be used as a personalised story recommendation engine.Rated all the short story finalists from the Hugo Awards.Few ideas:1. Mona Scott-Young is best-known for producing the Love & Hip Hop reality TV series on VH1. The franchise debuted in 2011 has remained a TV fixture today through industry-wide changes with TV and around 30 different seasons aired. However, it's Young's ability to permeate hip-hop culture into the mainstream that's been the true calling card. Before Love & Hip Hop, Mona managed talent in music. She was a co-founder for Violator with the late Chris Lighty, and was behind memorable brand partnerships such as Busta Rhymes and Courvoisier, Missy Elliott with Reebok and Adidas, and the landmark 50 Cent-Vitamin Water deal, among many others back then, such deals were harder to cut than nowadays. It was during this time in music when Mona was introduced to the fascinating lives of hip-hop wives, which led to Love & Hip-Hop's creation. But Mona, who also founded and runs Monami Productions, has more stories to tell about the hip-hop industry. She's teaming up with another well-known TV producer, 50 Cent, on “Hip-Hop Homicides,” which debuts later this year.Mona's influence on the world of hip-hop reaches further than most realize. TRANSCRIPTION[00:00:00] Mona Scott-Young: These were women who were living in the shadows of the men in their lives who had achieved all the fame and the success, and how were these women leveraging the relationships that they were in and the things that they were doing to get to where they wanted to be in life. So I always framed it as an opportunity, so you're getting these stories, right? All of the heartbreak and all of the joy, the highs, the lows. But in exchange, these women are also getting this platform where they can build their brands, build their businesses. [00:00:39] Dan Runcie: Hey, welcome to The Trapital podcast. I'm your host and the founder of Trapital, Dan Runcie. This podcast is your place to gain insights from executives in music, media, entertainment, and more, who are taking hip hop culture to the next level. [00:00:59] Dan Runcie: Today's guest is the producer and entrepreneur, Mona Scott-Young. She is the mind behind Hop. She also was a music executive for a number of years, worked with Violator and put together some of the more memorable hip hop branding deals of the time, such as Busta Rhymes in Courvoisier and Mountain Dew. She worked with 50 Cent, Vitaminwater as well, and a bunch of other deals, and she's been someone I've wanted to have on this podcast for a while. We talked a lot about the business of TV and how things have changed specifically for a docu-follow show like Love & Hip Hop. This is a show that has been going on for more than 10 seasons now and has had different franchises, different spinoffs, and has had plenty of copycats as well. So we talked about the business of the show, what it's been like producing it, the platform that a lot of the talent have had that have come up from it, one of the most famous examples is Cardi B and what she'd been able to do after the show, but we also talked about some of the other talents that's come from the show as well. We also talked about how Love & Hip Hop is positioned and some of the perception that it's had, whether or not that perception is more so chatter and criticism, or has that actually made a material impact on the business of what Mona's doing. She also talked a little bit about some of the other projects coming up from Monami Entertainment such as Hip Hop Homicides and a whole lot more. It was great to talk to her, get her perspective on streaming, the industry, where things are, and overall the brand deals that are happening in hip hop. Great conversation. Glad we finally had her on. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Here's my chat with Mona Scott-Young [00:02:38] Dan Runcie: All right. Today we are joined by the one and only Mona Scott-Young, producer and one of the great folks in media and entertainment today. And I feel like for you, you've been more than a decade in with Love & Hip Hop, you have several spinoffs. How do you keep things fresh? How do you keep everything coming year after year?[00:02:59] Mona Scott-Young: You know, I always say it's about reinvention. It's about evolution, making sure that you are constantly growing, whether it's me as a producer and applying that to the franchise. You know, what's great about the way that that concept was built is it's that it was a world, right? So we could always populate different folks in and out of that world. So it gave us an opportunity to, you know, cycle in new talent who had fresh stories to tell. And I think that has a lot to do with the staying power and the longevity of the franchise. [00:03:31] Dan Runcie: I think the other thing that's impressive is just how the show's been able to stay consistent with all of the changes that are happening with media and streaming and anything else. Have there been any big shifts that you've made from that perspective as things that have continued to move, whether it's from cable to streaming networks to where things are now? [00:03:50] Mona Scott-Young: You know, not necessarily in terms of the concept, right? 'Cause like I said, the stories are what keeps it fresh and different, but we definitely loosened up our shooting style a lot and we became, you know, more free-flowing, I think to be in line with the fact that folks were able to tune into social media and see things happening in real-time. You know, when we first started the franchise, a big part of it was this very soap opera-like feeling that it had. And over the course of the years, we loosened that up a little bit just so that the stories were able to, you know, track a little more closely to what was happening in real-time in their lives.[00:04:30] Dan Runcie: That makes sense. Do you feel as if social media changed the overall feel and the flow of the show itself? I know that's something that, I've talked to a lot of people on TV and they felt like they've noticed that. How are some of the ways you feel like social media either impacted things for Love & Hip Hop?[00:04:45] Mona Scott-Young: Absolutely. You know, because there's such a lead time with production and editing. It's really hard to stay up with the fact that these folks are out here living their lives on social media, and so the audience gets a chance to just tune into their IG lives and get a blow-by-blow of everything that's happening in their lives so that by the time our show is edited, it's hard for it to feel fresh, right, because they're like, oh, I saw that happen months ago. And so it's finding those other stories, getting the cast to keep things exclusively for the show so that there's this sense of discovery for the audience. 'Cause I think that's the biggest hurdle for reality TV is the fact that, you know, everyone has access to their audience and can broadcast their lives, you know, on a minute-by-minute basis. And so how do we offer something that's different, something that's entertaining, something that feels fresh and current and relevant? I think that's the biggest challenge. [00:05:44] Dan Runcie: Have you noticed that shift with social media at all changed based on what platform has been popular at the time? Of course, the show is popular as ever in Black Twitter, but how about with TikTok now with things picking up there? Have there been any unique things you've seen with the reception there? [00:05:58] Mona Scott-Young: Not necessarily. You know what, I'm not a big TikToker. I don't know if I should say that. I probably just aged myself a thousand years, but, you know, I haven't really noticed a big shift based on TikTok viewership. I know that, you know, or usership, 'cause I know that that's mainly what music, dance, or are they doing skits on there as well?[00:06:21] Dan Runcie: I mean, they're doing skits. I feel like with the show like yours though, it's unique because I think that you're reaching a bit of an older demographic than the folks that are really in TikTok. But like with all these social media platforms, they do tend to scale up at some point, right? So the younger community... [00:06:37] Mona Scott-Young: We'll see what happens, yeah. One of the biggest things that we saw happen on social media were the reenactments, right, the recreations where you had all of these social influencers and social comedians doing their takes on the scenes from the show, and that gave it a whole another life. And I think, you know, what people enjoy about the show is the cast's ability to be self-deprecating. They make fun of themselves, so sometimes you'd see them participating in those skits. You know, social media has always played a huge role in the success of the franchise, even dating back to the very early days where we gave bloggers and the video influencers, the social media influencers, the sneak peek at the show so that they kind of had first dibs. And the immediacy of, you know, them talking about the show and having that engagement was a big part of the success of the show. So I love it when I continuously see the show showing up in different ways on social media.[00:07:34] Dan Runcie: Can we also talk about how social media has been a big piece for how a lot of the folks on the show can use Love & Hip Hop as a platform to do other things? I think Cardi B, of course, has been one of the hallmark examples of this. But what are some of the other folks that stick out for you in terms of, yes, what they were able to do at this show, and then social media took them to another level?[00:07:55] Mona Scott-Young: I mean, if you think about everyone who's like started a business, right? Most of their products, they're hawking them online and via social media. So, you know, whether it's the waist trainers, the hair clips, makeup, all of that stuff kind of came from seeing it on the show and then watching them blow it up. And then you have some of it that was reverse engineered like Cardi was huge on social media already as kind of a, you know, influencer, comic, and having an opportunity to be on the show expanded her audience. But I just think seeing those two things come together, that was probably the biggest example of how, you know, social media and linear TV worked really well to really expand her brand.[00:08:40] Dan Runcie: Yeah, especially with her specifically. I mean, she's giving you the shoutouts in the songs, too, but just seeing what she's able to do creatively with the brand, and I think that's something that's been unique that we've seen with reality TV overall. But I feel like with your type of show specifically because you do get some of those characters that come back, you have some that go off and do their own thing, you see a bit more of that variety than some of these other shows where it's like one season that you may never see that person in the season. [00:09:07] Mona Scott-Young: That's very, very true. I mean, one of the big mandates for me, 'cause a lot of these shows were just about chronicling lives, right? This is about your life. For me, it was always, this is an opportunity, right? If you think about at its core, these were women, or the core of the original concept, these were women who were living in the shadows, right, of the men in their lives who had achieved all the fame and the success, and how were these women leveraging the relationships that they were in and the things that they were doing to get to where they wanted to be in life. So I always framed it as an opportunity, and what I love to see is how, you know, they go out and they take advantage of that opportunity. So you're getting these stories, right? All of the heartbreak and all of the, you know, the joy, the highs, the lows. But in exchange, these women are also getting this platform where they can build their brands, build their businesses. Everyone from Yandy, right, who went from being behind the scenes to having her Yelle Skin Care and all of her other numerous businesses that she has. Cardi with her music, who, you know, was doing her music, didn't have that massive success, had a huge following on social media, but was able to kind of connect the dots in a way that allowed for her music to take off. Oh, God, Rasheeda, Karlie Redd, and K. Michelle, and when I think about all of the success stories with their businesses and their brands, that for me is the big differentiator for Love & Hip Hop 'cause I think these ladies understood the assignment, understood that this was an opportunity, and took advantage of it to, you know, level up in their lives and what they were doing with their business.[00:10:50] Dan Runcie: And I feel like I've seen your own career and your own opportunities take a similar evolution as the show has continued to have its own success, and you had started your production company years ago, but I think right now we've just seen more and more opportunity for creators like yourself that have been able to establish their franchises and just have the success and have different networks have interest in them year over year. What has that process been like? [00:11:15] Mona Scott-Young: Yeah. You know, it's the most gratifying thing because I think, you know, the first to market with anything always is a double-edged sword, right? So Love & Hip Hop was the first docu-follow of its kind that focused on the genre of hip hop and the way that we did, and really gave a different look and feel to what we're used to seeing on reality television. And what we've seen since then, I think, are a lot of shows that I would say Love & Hip Hop paved the way for. You know, shoutout to shows like Power and, you know, Empire and even Rap Sh!t that Issa Rae has on right now. I look at that and I go, yeah, the fact that, you know, we're now giving space to scripted shows that are set in this world and shining a light on the culture and, you know, the women in the culture specifically, if you look at Rap Sh!t, I feel like that is a direct descendant of what Love & Hip Hop was able to pave the way for.[00:12:13] Dan Runcie: Yeah, those are good examples. I feel like that moment in the end of the 2010s, you started to see more shows, I feel like that whole Empire run and a bunch of shows around that, we're able to see a lot of success there. I also feel like around this time too, especially in the most recent years, we've also seen a lot more studios and a lot more folks get different opportunities, whether it's folks getting these overall deals from the streaming services or some others getting big interest from private equity firms that are trying to invest in these studios. As someone that runs a studio, runs a reduction company yourself, how do you view that landscape, and how do those opportunities come up for different folks?[00:12:55] Mona Scott-Young: I mean, I think it's fantastic. I think it's a wonderful thing. I still don't think there's enough of it happening. I always say that during, you know, Black Lives Matter, when we were at the height of that movement, there were so many overtures, right? So many calls were made and people wanting to be in business. And I do believe you're seeing an increased number of programming that caters to our audience and opportunities for those content creators. But I also, you know, hope that this trend continues, and I hope this isn't kind of a performative gesture in order to check a box or to satisfy, you know, their contribution. But, I think it's great. I think the more that audiences understand that their viewership matters, that their support matters, and that's really what is going to dictate it at the end of the day, because we can, you know, get those dollars in and we can get those opportunities. But if those eyeballs don't tune in, then you know, we're not going to continue to see the programming and have those opportunities. So I think it's, you know, nice to see it happen. I'm very interested in seeing what the staying power is for this and how those opportunities increase and not, you know, level out. [00:14:10] Dan Runcie: Do you think that there is any sort of fear or thought that folks should have about the staying power of those eyeballs? Like, does some of these things seem a bit more fleeting in nature? [00:14:21] Mona Scott-Young: I don't think we get the same commitment to staying with something and giving it an opportunity to grow, right? It's like if we don't have instant success, if we don't get those eyeballs instantly, the idea is, oh, this audience is in here moving on to the next, right? I just think that sometimes it takes a minute for a show to catch on. I don't ever think the same marketing dollars are put towards the programming so that folks even have the awareness level that's usually left to us to figure out what are the ways that we're going to bring visibility to, you know, our shows and make sure that, you know, folks know that we exist. Again, I just hope that the commitment extends beyond just the initial overture and that there is promotions and marketing and commitment to seeing these shows grow and find their audience like every other programming has an opportunity to do. [00:15:18] Dan Runcie: That makes sense. It also makes me think about whether or not there are specific differences as well for folks who are making shows, whether it's something for streaming versus something for cable TV or for a network specifically, because I know that with your shows and some of the others that are doing reality things, most of your audience still is, at least from my understanding, still tuning in through cable and watching it through those areas, but. Even though we started to see some reality TV that's been exclusive to these streaming services, it still hasn't been to the same extent that we see, like whether it's with Love & Hip Hop on VH1 or some of the other services. Why do you think that is? And do you think that'll change at all? [00:15:59] Mona Scott-Young: I think the formats have to evolve in order for us to find the right formula to live on the streamers. You know, those shows are about repeatability and about, you know, the binge-watching and, you know, for reality, there's something about that appointment television that tuning in week in and week out that I think plays into the idea that what is happening is happening to some extent in real-time, even though we know it isn't, and the ability to, you know, watch it all. I think it's just a different, it's a shift. It's a paradigm shift, and we have to figure out what the right formula is, what the right content play is to work in that arena. So there's a lot of conversations around that and everybody's trying to find like, kind of what is it right now what you're seeing on streamers are. Formatted docu-series, like real estate shows and, you know, those kind of, I'm trying to think of what are some of the docu-follows that are living. Probably the Kardashian show in Hulu is an example, right? That's kind of a beast of a different nature, right? There's a rabid audience there for the Kardashian clan that I think will watch no matter where it exists. So, you know, I'd love to see more conventional docu-follow find its way to the streamers. I think there's going to have to be a little bit of a fine-tuning in what that format looks like for it to really work there.[00:17:29] Dan Runcie: Right. Because it isn't necessarily a binge release. I don't feel like that necessarily makes sense if you're trying to follow things. I think back to, it was Rhythm + Flow. This is almost three years ago at this point, but the show, you know, the competition show Cardi B and Chance and T.I., I think they did every week or every other week for three block episode of release, and I felt like that was okay. It wasn't too long that felt like it didn't make sense for Netflix, but it was just enough to capture some momentum. And I think back about that, I was like, Okay. [00:17:58] Mona Scott-Young: They're doing that as a format, right? It's a competition show. So those work. The competition shows work. The format shows, the real estate, the cooking, the anything, it's just that finding that right rhythm, that right lane for docu-follow is going to be the challenge.[00:18:14] Dan Runcie: Right. Yeah. That's your point. And then, of course, the Kardashians may be a bit of an outlier just given the size of them, but you are, in a lot of ways, bringing either new stars or people who haven't necessarily had their headlines everywhere in quite some time to the stage, and that's a little bit of a different...[00:18:31] Mona Scott-Young: That's a little bit of a different, yeah, a little bit of a different proposition, if you will.[00:18:36] Dan Runcie: Yeah, definitely. The other reason why I wanted to chat with you is because even before Love & Hip Hop and everything else, you had spent years in music, and you were one of the early ones that were looking at the opportunities for artists, working specifically with brands and looking back at whether it was 50's Vitamin water deal or Courvoisier with Busta.[00:19:00] Mona Scott-Young: For Mountain Dew or Missy with Adidas, or I should say Adidas, and Reebok, and you know, A Tribe Called Quest and Sprite, right? It goes all the way back to that. [00:19:12] Dan Runcie: What do you think it was? 'Cause I felt like Violator was here when everyone else was here in terms of just pushing those things. There were a few others I know that were doing their thing, but it felt like you all were at least five years ahead of where everyone else was pushing them, pushing those things. [00:19:26] Mona Scott-Young: Well, and I appreciate that. For us, it was really always about how do we maximize for our clients, right? We were managers first. And then when we realized that there were all these other areas that we needed to educate ourselves in and get involved in in order to really manage our clients to the best of our ability, and help them expand their brands, and fully monetize, you know, their talents and their contributions to a culture that we saw was taking over every area of advertising and pop culture. We realized that, you know, the opportunities were way beyond just their music, way beyond understanding how to conduct the business of their music. It was about their branding, their cross, you know, marketing value, their ability to bridge the gap with brands and sponsors. So that was just a function of us really wanting to represent our clients not just the best of our ability to help them maximize to the fullest what they, you know, they were bringing to the table with their music and with their cultural relevance. So we understood that it was bigger than just the music. [00:20:41] Dan Runcie: And do you feel like a lot of the brand partners that you were pitching and talking to with about these opportunities at the time saw that it was bigger than just the music and wanted in because I look at the way things are now and the amount of deals and partnerships we see now. It was nothing compared to what it was like when you were doing these deals back then. [00:20:59] Mona Scott-Young: I mean, you know, it's interesting 'cause there was that period where they didn't quite understand what was happening with this, you know, music and the culture because it was always just across the board, Black, White, Asian, and understanding what that kind of point of connection was, right, with all of these kids. Was it the music? Was it the clothing? Was it the lifestyle? What exactly are they buying into? And I think we serve the very important role in helping them bridge that gap, right, giving them that understanding of what hip hop was culturally and all of its different touch points. And then it became about, well, can't we just tap this thing without having to necessarily put this talent front and center? We can just use the music. We can dress, you know, our folks in the clothing and getting them to understand that there was an authenticity, right, that came with the culture that you couldn't fake, and that if you were going to do it, it had to be done in a way that was mutually beneficial because we also couldn't afford to risk our clients' viability with their core audience. Because if they, you know, sold out, then they were done with the music. And that exchange, that dialogue, that conversation I think is what allowed us to position ourselves in a way that benefited our clients, that allowed us to become a gateway to the culture and to the music for a lot of these brands. And that allowed companies like Steve Stoute's Translation literally to exist based on being that, you know, cultural bridge. So it was a step up process of getting them, one, to understand what this thing called hip hop was, and then how it was influencing their consumers, and then how best to tap it in a way that, you know, didn't hurt the artists that they were exploiting. And I'll use the word exploit 'cause I think, you know, exploiting is simply taking full advantage of a situation or, you know, a space. And that's what it was at the end of the day. [00:23:12] Dan Runcie: And we definitely saw a lot of the success at the time with the number of deals that we were seeing. Were there any that you look back on that you were like, oh, you may have pitched that client, or you may have tried to push this one, they just weren't ready, but if this was now, it would've been, No question, this would've already happened? [00:23:27] Mona Scott-Young: You know, I always look back at that time fondly because I realized that we were at the forefront of, you know, an industry that nobody knew exactly what it was. Now when I hear, you know, branding, brand partnerships, you know, I'm like, okay, I guess that's what we were doing way back then. But I think I look back more fondly at the way we were able to leverage our talent into those deals, right? Busta with Mountain Dew started out as a print campaign, and by the time we were done, it had grown into this multimillion-dollar, you know, 360 television spots, everything. It started out as a radio campaign, actually, not even, it was just going to be his voice, right? And then it blew up into something more. It's just now it's par for the course. Now, you know, if you don't have a brand endorsement deal, if you're not, you know, aligned, people think you haven't made it right. But back then, I think it was a lot more challenging, a lot more difficult, and, you know, I think we broke a lot of barriers with the kinds of deals that we did. [00:24:31] Dan Runcie: Yeah, definitely. And I could imagine now that with the stars that are on Love & Hip Hop and the talent that you're working with now, some of them are probably trying to see, okay, can they reach out to you to get advice on these types of deals that they're getting? Do you get involved with any of that ever? [00:24:52] Mona Scott-Young: Yeah, you know, every once in a while. But the interesting thing is now they're sought after, right, because of their following. And all of these brands want them, you know, creating these organic posts so that folks can really believe they're drinking this slim tummy tea or whatever it is that they're hawking. But I think the value, understanding the value of their engagement with their fans is the most important thing for these guys, and I think they're all doing a fantastic job. I mean, I'm always surprised when it's like, oh, okay, well that's, you know, I don't really believe that they're eating or drinking or engaging in this activity, but more power to you. Go ahead. [00:25:33] Dan Runcie: Does any of this ever find a way to get itself into the show itself where folks are like, Okay, I have this partnership now, they'll give me extra money if I wear this Fashion Nova t-shirt in this season of Love & Hip Hop? [00:25:47] Mona Scott-Young: It's funny that you mentioned Fashion Nova because they are extremely aggressive, and they have, you know, they were very smart about the way they built their business, right? They just went out and got a bunch of brand ambassadors, and I think in the beginning it was for a box of free clothes. They had all of these people hawking their product, but the networks and the buyers, they're pretty savvy now. And, you know, they've got their ad sales departments, they still rely probably more than ever on their ad sales dollars. And so they're very, very leery of any kind of integrations, and there are opportunities to kind of go through the front door, do deals with them, buy ad time, and get real, you know, integrated placements. And sometimes, you know, they're also good about if it's an organic, you know, partnership with the talent and it's something potentially that factors into their story, they'll let it slide and let it make its way into the story. But they're a little bit savvy to the fact that, you know, sometimes the talent is getting paid for this and is promising the placement on the show as part of their deal in leveraging that. And yeah, they put the smack down on that. [00:27:01] Dan Runcie: Yeah, I could imagine because it's one of these things where, of course, it's more money into the show and I think everyone generally could benefit from it. But from the other perspective, you don't just want to turn the whole thing into sponsored content, right? [00:27:12] Mona Scott-Young: Yeah. I'm constantly saying to the talent, this is not going to be one big message commercial, you know? But listen, a lot of times the network isn't even participating in that income. They're just letting the talent, yeah, whatever deals that they have in place with these brand partners, they just let the talent hang onto it. So it doesn't really bring money to the show's bottom line. And depending on who the partner is, like somebody like Fashion Nova, the network definitely, you know, their antennas go up. But some of you know the smaller brands and especially. If it's the talent's brand, and they know that it's their business, like you'll always see Yandy washing her face with Yelle Skincare. You'll see Rasheeda doing a scene at the Pressed, you know, store or at the Frost Bistro. So if it's their businesses, the network is always happy to, you know, give them the opportunity to promote their brands and their businesses.[00:28:05] Dan Runcie: Is there ever any pressure from the network to try to capture all of the value that the show is creating? 'Cause I know I'm hearing that from so many other areas in media and entertainment, where they're seeing what's being captured in their area, or they're seeing what's happening and what they're creating. They want to be able to capture more of that. How have those conversations been like with the network if they come up at all? [00:28:27] Mona Scott-Young: When you say capture more of it, you mean with the content or trying to find ways to exploit the brand? [00:28:32] Dan Runcie: The latter, trying to find ways to exploit the brand. [00:28:34] Mona Scott-Young: I mean, yeah, absolutely. It's a little bit of a tightrope, right, because they want to preserve the integrity of the brand. They want to protect the brand and not overexpose it or not hurt it by doing the wrong thing with the brand. But they certainly want to, you know, see the brand continue to evolve, which has been a big part of the staying power. And I think Viacom does a really good, you know, job at that when you think about Love & Hip Hop and the way that it's branched into, you know, all of the specials that we do and they have, you know, spinoffs that they do with the talent. And now they're beginning to do smaller capsule shows that are going to be coming out, you know, whether it's like watch party- type shows or, you know, getaway trip- type shows. So they're very careful about not diluting and over-exposing the brand, but they're very good about continuing to build on the brand so that it evolves and, you know, continues to have a long life. [00:29:34] Dan Runcie: Yeah. And I feel like the longevity you've already had speaks a lot to this. I'm curious though, 'cause I know in other interviews, people have often asked you about how your show is positioned relative to some of the other reality shows and whether or not you are portraying certain people in the best light. And I'm always curious, one of the things I was wondering is that more so chatter where people are talking about these things? Or have any of those conversations actually impacted anything you've either done with the show or the show's success in any way? [00:30:06] Mona Scott-Young: I mean, a lot of it is chatter because you know, in all fairness, when I watched the other shows, there really isn't anything much different happening on those shows in terms of the way the cast members are expressing themselves in any given moment. I think the increased scrutiny on our show has one to do, and I say it very honestly, with the word hip hop and the title, right? I think that there's this preconceived, you know, stigma attached to this huge genre that is literally pop culture right now. So it's almost ridiculously laughable that people still want to treat hip hop as some kind of a subculture, you know, of any kind. But I think the fact that the word hip hop is in the title makes people put us under a microscope, under a magnifying glass in a much different way than they do with, you know, shows with the word Housewives or Beverly Hills in the title. But if you look at the reactions and you look at some of the situations, they're not different at all. So for me, it is chatter, right, because I think the strength is in the numbers and the viewership. I think that's where you know honestly that there is something very relatable about this show, no matter what people want to say or think, because of the sheer volume of, you know, folks who tune in week in, week out to see the show, the staying power that the show has had, the influence that the show has had, whether it's music or, you know, the number of shoutouts that the show gets, the number of mentions that it gets, what happens on social media whenever the show is on air. There's a stronghold there that I think is undeniable. And so there's that whole saying about, you know, we build things up just to bring them down, and we've seen that happen with so many different cultural and iconic, you know, things, and I just think that it's par for the course with this franchise. [00:32:08] Dan Runcie: And I also think you've seen that in the range of folks that tune in as well because I think sometimes the type of content that you create, people will often say, oh, well that's meant for a certain type of person. And it's like, well, it's not really the case 'cause there's people of all ranges of income, however you want to measure success. [00:32:26] Mona Scott-Young: Yeah, it's actually pretty mind-boggling even to this day when, you know, for a long time I did the VOs at the top of the show, so the voice has become a little bit of, you know, its own personality, and, a lot of people don't know what I look like, but the minute I opened my mouth, and it'll be like middle-aged, you know, white people and young, very young kids. And I'm like, why, you know, are you even watching this show? You should be watching Nickelodeon. And so it's interesting to me the broad range of audience that it's found. And again, I always go back to the relatability, and I always go back to the connectivity with the stories, and I think that that's what people gravitate towards. [00:33:11] Dan Runcie: Yeah. And I think that's always going to be there as long as the show continues to evolve as well. And I'm thinking you were probably already thinking about several seasons ahead of now, several years ahead and now, but I'm very curious to see what is this next generation of talent that is going to be into your show, the generation that grew up on TikTok, the generation that grew up with a lot of the things? I think a lot of the talent on your show, whether they're Gen X or millennials, more so, okay, they had their run, but eventually, it's going to be the Gen Z folks and more of them that are going to be on the show more regularly, how that's going to shape not just the things they talk about and everything else, but also as streaming and other things evolve, how the show continues to move, and how the show continues to grow from that perspective. So I'd love to hear what you think the future is going to look like, let's say five years down the road of how this show may continue to evolve.[00:34:01] Mona Scott-Young: Oh, wow. I mean, you know, it's always been about the cast, and they've shaped kind of the feel and the content within the show. So if you're talking about, you know, five years from now, there's going to be a cast there that is reflective of where we are with music, technology, the culture, and those are going to be the stories that we're telling so hard to predict. But like I said, the key and the magic of the franchise has always been that the brand, you know, acted as kind of a bubble within which you cycled in the talent. And five years from now, there's going to be the talent doing what they do, how they do it, and we'll be right there with those cameras to capture it.[00:34:46] Dan Runcie: Yes, it'd be exciting to see. So in the next couple of months though, what should people stay in tune for before we wrap things up here? What should people look out for? [00:34:54] Mona Scott-Young: Oh, so many things that we're doing. I mean, you know, we spent a lot of time talking about the Love & Hip Hop franchise, but as a company, we have so many other projects that we're engaged in and that we're doing. And one in particular coming October 27th and November 3rd actually is the actual premiere, but Hip Hop Homicides is a show that we're doing on WEtv, 50 Cent and G-Unit, Monami and Lionsgate came together with WEtv, and that is a show we're very excited about, very proud of. And it just, again, utilizing, you know, hip hop culture as kind of the foundation, but it's looking at those staggering number of murders that have occurred within our culture that still remain unsolved and even some of them were folks are, you know, serving time for these murders. They're still questions out there that have never been answered. And so Van Lathan is our host and he does a very active, you know, boots-on-the-ground kind of journey to a bunch of different cities where we take a close look at these murders and talk to family members and fans alike. And it's really, to me, a very, very fresh look at these murders that have plagued our community. [00:36:08] Dan Runcie: Oh, nice. That'll be a good one. And I've always liked Van in everything that he's done. I know he's done a lot of stuff with The Ringer recently, but no, he'll be good. I'm excited for this. [00:36:16] Mona Scott-Young: No, he's great at it. And Hip Hop Homicides on WEtv. Yep. November 3rd and we're excited for that one. So that's the next thing coming down the pike. [00:36:27] Dan Runcie: Great stuff. Great stuff. Well, Mona, this is great. Excited for you. Excited for everything coming up from Monami Entertainment. And if people want to follow along with you or with everything that's happening, where should they check in to follow you? [00:36:38] Mona Scott-Young: They can check on Instagram, Twitter, all social platforms. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. Recently, Pranav suggested the topic of mystery macaws. As it happens, that's a topic I researched for the book, which by the way is now FORMATTED! And hopefully by the time you hear this I'll have been able to order a test copy to make sure it looks good before I order enough copies for everyone who backed the Kickstarter at that level. Whew! I've used the mystery macaw chapter from the book as a basis for this episode, but it's not identical by any means—I've added some stuff. Before we learn about some mystery macaws, though, we have a birthday shout-out! Happy birthday to MaxOrangutan! Max! I bet you like bananas and climb around a lot! I hope you have a fantastic birthday, maybe with a banana cake or a cake banana, which I think is a thing I just made up but it sounds good, doesn't it? Macaws are a type of parrot native to the Americas. They have longer tails and larger bills than true parrots and have face patches that are mostly white or yellow. There are six living species of macaw known but many others that are extinct or probably extinct. The largest living species is the hyacinth macaw, which is a beautiful blue all over except for yellow face markings. It can grow over 3 feet long, or about 92 centimeters, including its long tail. It mostly eats nuts, even coconuts and macadamia nuts that are too tough for most other animals to crack open, but it also likes fruit, seeds, and some other plant material. Like other parrots, macaws are intelligent birds that have been observed using tools. For instance, the hyacinth macaw will use pieces of sticks and other items to keep a nut from rolling away while it works on biting it open. The story of a mystery bird sometimes called the Martinique macaw starts almost 400 years ago, when Jacques Bouton, a French priest, visited the Caribbean in 1639 and specifically Martinique in 1642. Bouton wrote an account of the people and animals he saw, including several macaws that don't quite match any birds known today. One of these is the so-called Martinique macaw, which he said was blue and saffron in color. Saffron is a rich orangey yellow. We have some paintings that might be depictions of the mystery macaws. An artist named Eleazar Albin painted a blue and yellow parrot with a white face patch in 1740 that's supposedly the Martinique macaw, although Albin would have seen the bird in Jamaica when he visited in 1701, not Martinique. The two islands are about 1,100 miles apart, or almost 1,800 kilometers. A similar blue and yellow macaw appears in Roelant Savery's 1626 painting of a dodo. The dodo lived on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, nowhere near the Americas. Savery just liked to paint dodos and included them in a lot of his art. In another 1626 painting, called “Landscape with Birds,” he included a dodo, an ostrich, a chicken, a turkey, a peacock, ducks, swans, cranes of various kinds, and lots of other birds that don't live anywhere near each other. On the far left edge of the painting there's a blue macaw with yellow underparts. In the early 20th century, a zoologist named Walter Rothschild read Bouton's account and decided those birds needed to be described as new species, even though there were no type specimens and no way of knowing if the birds were actually new to science. He described the Martinique macaw in 1905 but reclassified it when he published a book named Extinct Birds in 1907.

What is the process that the CPGs go through before publication? Medics identify what guidelines are needed. A team consisting of a medic, unit surgeon and specialist in the field begin a draft. Additional authors, specialists and SMEs are added as identified Progress is monitored by the Prolonged Field Care Working Group Steering Committee and advisors from the Joint Trauma System. Final draft sent out to interested parties, other specialists and PFC working group members for review Published in the Journal of Special Operations Medicine(JSOM) with proprietary format Formatted for public release via the JTS website Presented as a Thursday morning JTS CME Conference Talk. Posted on prolongedfieldcare.org Interviews with authors are published as podcasts. Primary and Co-Authors may write additional thoughts as a blog post. Polldaddy quizzes may be included in the posts or separately. Released and promoted through social media such as our Facebook Pages, Instagram and Twitter feeds. Why not just update the Tactical Medical Emergency Protocols? We wanted peer reviewed guidelines that could be updated individually as needed. Independent medical providers can now see what studies were referenced per recommendation. We have partnered with USSOCOM and advised several changes and additions to the TMEPs. The CPGs will help guide the CEB as they update future additions of the TMEPS as a reference. What are the origins of the CPGs? Sharing lessons learned and best practices accross the theaters of war Why are there CPGs specific to Prolonged Field Care and Critical Care Evacuation Teams(CCAT) in addition to the main JTS CPGs? There are large enough differences in levels of training, equipment and medications available and general logistics involved that make providing an identical care in all environments impossible. The CPGs take into consideration the unique challenges of the operational environment so the the provider is presented with several best options for the unique issues presented with each etiology and environment. What CPGs are in the works and when can we expect to see them published?

How to Reach Decision-Makers When Selling to Enterprises   When selling, we want to talk to the decision makers but how do you reach them in order to qualify them as a prospect?  Let's talk about that in this episode.    Erik Kostelnik is the CEO of Postal.io,  a sales marketing engagement platform that generates leads, increases sales, and improves customer retention by optimizing offline engagement and interactions.    Challenges in reaching out to decision makers There have always been obstacles in selling; however, in the last 20 years, it has gotten a lot noisier due to sales and marketing automation. As a result, it has become more difficult to grab the attention of potential clients. People are just overrun by messages and have become desensitized. You need to be different if you want to interrupt this massive flow of data to the decision-makers.     How to reach decision makers Historically we have operated on “five touches” to get to a yes or a no response. Operating within these parameters, sales reps standardized the workflow with these five touches in mind. The number of touches has increased, however, due to the volume of people trying to do the same things. It's become even harder to get a hold of decision-makers.    The solution is to go back to personalization. Formatted emails need to be removed from your own sequences and be replaced with persona-based selling. Sequence your outreaches using social media platforms, emails, and phone call pitches. You can use this steps:    Send an email with a gift, like an ebook. Reach out through LinkedIn. Make a personal phone call. Email them. Repeat this process three times. With this process, you can reach decision makers, even offline.   During this process, sharpen your sales sword and differentiate yourself from the competitors.    “How to Reach Decision-Makers When Selling to Enterprises” episode resources  Reach out to Erik Kostelnik via his LinkedIn account. For those of us who have been using computers for a long time, inserting little strings of text into a document to denote formatting may seem like a backward step. I felt that way for years, doggedly holding on to my view that WYSIWYG, (what you see is what you get), was inherently superior. I now realise how much that was holding me back.   Markdown is a simple series of commands you can insert into any text file that allows you to create beautifully formatted documents in almost any format you want, including web pages, PDF files, ePub files and even Word documents. Thanks to markdown, I'm now creating good-looking documents on any device I have to hand, including the very basic scratchpad in my Focus 40 Blue 5th gen Braille display.   And here's the kicker! When you're ready to do the final edit of your document or collaborate with others, there's a free plug-in that lets you open, edit and save Markdown right within Microsoft Word. This workflow has been a game-changer for me.   In this episode, I'll introduce you to the basics of Markdown and show you how you can create and work with documents consistently on a wide range of devices.   Products mentioned in this feature include: Writage, a Markdown plug-in for Microsoft Word, the Ulysses app for iOS, iPadOS and Mac, IA Writer, and the Focus 40 Blue from Vispero.    I also explain a little about how the optimise battery feature works on iOS.   Keep up with Mosen At Large between episodes. Bayfield County’s pumpkin farms and cornfields are the perfect backdrop for the ever-more popular corn mazes. Director of Tourism Mary Motiff tells us about two in Bayfield County, plus takes us to the Delta Diner. Located almost literally in the middle of nowhere, the perfectly restored diner has not only earned a national reputation for its unique menu, but it has become a destination for experiential diners. Plus, a preview of the County’s signature October event and other things to do on this episode of Bayfield County Wild.   A-Mazing Fun October is the perfect time for family fun and corn mazes. Bayfield County has two very popular corn mazes: one in Oulu and the other at White River Ag in Mason, Wis. The Oulu Corn Maze has been around many years. Each year, the owners come up with a new design to make it more interesting for repeat visitors. Everyone gets a punch card that is stamped every time they get to a different station within the maze and then the card is turned in at the end for prizes, hot cider and treats. The weekend before Halloween, the maze is turned into a haunted experience for those who love to get spooked. At White River Ag, there are different activities for the kids, including a hay pyramid they can climb. More information about the corn mazes can be found on the Bayfield County Tourism website and their Facebook page, as well as the Oulu Corn Maze website and White River Ag Facebook page. Mary advises visitors to be sure to dress for the weather so everyone can enjoy themselves. Experiential Dining in Delta Located just 12 miles south of Iron River in the middle of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest is a perfectly restored 1940’s Silk City Diner from upstate New York called the Delta Diner. Opened in 2003, the Delta Diner has become much more than a popular eatery for locals and visitors alike; it’s a destination in and of itself that attracts foodies to Bayfield County. Co-owner Todd Bucher says the Delta Diner location was once a gathering place for the community at the Delta Store for more than 50 years before it burned down. Todd and his wife, Nina, wanted to create another place where people could gather in the same spot. The 48-seat diner has all the diner fare, but with ramped-up recipes that include spices and flavors that are not typical at a diner. Pedro’s Mex Benny features a dense and moist chili corn bake with local chorizo sausage from the Sixth St. Market ground into a chipotle sauce over perfect, over-easy eggs. The Norwegian pancakes are called “hotcakes” because pickled jalapenos are added into the pancake batter and carmelized on the grill, then the hotcakes are sprinkled with powdered sugar and a squeeze of lemon. This was one of Guy Fieri’s (host of Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”) favorites when he visited the diner as a customer, then brought a film crew one year later to share his discovery. Todd says his customers are a diverse crowd that carry the “E” gene, which is short for enthusiasm. His business model is unique in that he has created an LLC with 32-part owners who are members of the community and his customers. Diner employees start at a living wage of $15/hr., so there is no tipping. The successful model has made it possible for the diner to expand and provide more opportunities for when people come to the diner on a busy day. They now partner with Purple Door Ice Cream in Milwaukee to serve the best ice cream in Wisconsin, according to Todd, at a historic building on site. They’ve also expanded the Southeast corner of the property and added a Tin Tap House and Chicken Shack that they call the “Tap Shack.” The Tap Shack offers a craft brewing experience in partnership with Earth Rider Beer and an outdoor, island vibe, serving authentic Jamaican Jerk chicken, pork and festival rice. The Tap Shack is open on weekends through mid-October. Next season, the Tap Shack will be open for more than 100 days and include new events and menu items. More information about the history of the diner can be found on its website and Facebook Page.   Why hello and welcome.  Welcome to Episode 20 of the Small Business Made Simple Podcast. How are you today?  I hope you are going well, achieving this week’s goals and having a laugh as you go along.  Today I’m touching on a subject I haven’t spoken about on the Podcast and yet find myself using everyday and quite successfully too, I might add!  That’s LinkedIn. Are you on it?  Do you even know what it is?  Or how you can use it to drive leads and connections in your business?  Well today we are covering all that and more with my 16 tips for using LinkedIn. LinkedIn is an obvious choice for professional services businesses and is a great way for these businesses to produce content to establish themselves as an authority in their field. It is also great for building a database of contacts. With more than 575 million users worldwide, and 9 million Australians, the network provides an opportunity to develop strong business connections with a large number of people. But before we go down the LinkedIn rabbit hole, let’s do this week’s discovery of the week! THIS WEEK’S DISCOVERY! Ok this week’s discovery is something I’ve known about for a while – but haven’t used to its full potential in my business – until now! And now I’m totally hooked. Have you heard of Creative Market?  Creative Market is an online marketplace for community-generated design assets.  And what do I mean by design assets – I mean things like Instagram templates, eBook templates, PDF downloadable guide templates, fonts, oh my gosh – so so much. Now as a big, huge, massive fan of Canva – which I’ve talked about lots on this podcast – I failed to see, to my detriment, for years the advantage of Creative Market. But it’s amazing.  It sits somewhere between Canva – do it yourself and hiring a designer. Ok, to help you understand it better – for instance, I’ve recently purchased a template for doing my latest eBook – 7 Sure-Fire Ways to Grow Your Instagram.  All the design work was done for me.  I purchased it, I think it was around $35 (uhm it would take me hours to do this and I work for more than $35 an hour), I uploaded it to Canva (some of them you can do this) and basically loaded my photos and copy into it and hey presto, it was done.  Formatted, styled and on brand!  YAY! For a better understanding, head to www.creativemarket.com.  And remember, yes things do cost money to purchase, they’re not free, but what’s your hourly rate again?!?!? Oh, but just another little tip – if you sign up for the newsletter you can get loads of awesome freebies! As always, just a little disclaimer, my discoveries are just that and I am in no way affiliated with any of them but promise to tell you if I ever am.  I just love them and from the response of my listeners, you guys, you are loving them too! Hey and if you have a little discovery, or something you use in your business that you’d like to share, please do so.  Email me at jenn@jenndonovan.com.au or tag me @smallbusinessmadesimple.  I really love to know what tools you use to help make your life simpler! Hey, also, if you want my 7 Sure-Fire Ways to Grow Your Instagram – head to www.socialmediaandmarketing.com.au/instagram 16 TIPS FOR USING LINKEDIN IN YOUR MARKETING MIX The best way to describe LinkedIn is a professional Facebook.  And I can’t tell you how true this is.  Last year one of my LinkedIn connections and acquaintances posted a blog post to both Facebook and LinkedIn. The picture that went with the blog, so like the header picture, was of women in bathing suits – which I have to admit I thought was a bit odd considering this person was a LinkedIn expert – not really talking about bathing suits in the blog post – so a photo put there for “stopping the scroll” eye catching purposes rather than related to the blog post. To see the different reactions on the different platforms almost blew my mind.  Seriously, the people on Facebook were like hungry pack of dogs.  Ripping into this person with statements about women’s rights and sexism and using sex to sell – an absolute shamble and so detrimental to a brand. However, same article, same picture on LinkedIn was dealt with by a single person requesting that the picture be changed because it really wasn’t appropriate for the article written – to which the author responded with a “sure, deepest apologies”.  That was it. The professionalism of LinkedIn was evident.  We’re all professionals – the article wasn’t so professional but like professionals and rational people, we simply said “hey, I think you should take it down”. On Facebook, it was like a war declared on a small country.  Disgraceful really. Have you seen any examples like this? So that’s why calling LinkedIn a professional Facebook rings true to me. So, is LinkedIn for you? If you want to grow your network, do online networking, set yourself in your industry as the expert, go to person, create opportunities including employment and/or business ventures, then I think it’s for you. Or if you’re sick of the trolls on Facebook – maybe it’s for you too! Oh, and I can’t forget to mention the Google ranking of LinkedIn.  Google anyone’s name and if they have a LinkedIn profile – chances are it will come up in the first couple of search results.  We can spend $1000’s on keywords to get a ranking like that or we can have a LinkedIn profile!  Money for jam, I’d say! Despite the social nature of LinkedIn, it is very different than other social media networks like Facebook or Twitter so that’s why I thought I’d give you some tips for using it or using it better here today. Must Do: Keep Your Profile Basics Updated! Many people forget to keep their LinkedIn profiles updated. Whether you’re a total newbie, just starting a new job, or starting to explore new opportunities, there’s no excuse to have outdated information on LinkedIn. It will reflect badly on you. Here are two quick and easy areas you must check are up to date: Professional Headline: The job of any headline is to entice people to click. At minimum, you can use your headline to highlight your current position and company (e.g., “Director of Inbound Marketing at ABCXYZ Corporation”), but you can and should go further. Highlight your expertise (e.g., “Content Marketing Strategist and Copywriter”) or awards or showcase skills you want to turn up in searches (e.g., “Speaker, Trainer, Author, Consultant, Evangelist”). Tell everyone on LinkedIn who you are, what you do, and why you’re someone they need to connect with. Location and Industry: Are your location and industry still accurate? If not, fix them now! Doing these two simple things will help more people find you and help you find more relevant potential contacts. Only Use Professional Photos LinkedIn profiles that have a picture are 11 times more likely to be viewed. So, if you’re still showing a silhouette, it’s time to make a change and reveal yourself. However, some friendly advice: Your LinkedIn photo shouldn’t be from 20 years ago. It shouldn’t look like it belongs on a dating site, stock photo site, or social network (e.g., Facebook or Instagram). And don’t feature your pet or significant other. Just. No. LinkedIn is for professionals. Be one. Brand Your Profile With a Background Photo If your LinkedIn profile still has the blue LinkedIn background, then it’s time to change that. Give your profile page a bit more personality, or branding, with a visually appealing background image. If the image can let your audience know what you do, then even better.  For example, if you’re a speaker, maybe your photo is of you on stage speaking. LinkedIn advises users to use an image (PNG, JPG, or GIF) with a resolution of 1400x425. Canva.com has templates already set up for you to do your LinkedIn banner – it’s easy! Write a Ridiculously Good Summary This is where you really sell yourself to potential connections. Your summary should expand on what appears in your headline, highlighting your specialties, career experience, noteworthy accolades, and thought leadership. There has been much discussion about whether it’s best to write in first-person versus third-person narrative here. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter either way — just stay consistent with whichever you choose. Don’t go back and forth between first person and third person as it’s confusing and signals a lack of attention to detail. In summary of LinkedIn summaries: keep your ego in check, focus on the most relevant details about your career, avoid meaningless jargon, and ensure it’s easy to read.  Oh, and make sure there’s no typos! Use Keywords With Intent Words are so incredibly important, especially when search is a big part of the equation. Using the right keywords in your profile is the difference between being found and being invisible. Identify the words you want to be found for when people use LinkedIn search and use those keywords in your headline, summary, and profile. Using the right keywords will expose you to more potential connections and opportunities. Neat Trick: Pick the “Other” Website Option Under your Contact Info, LinkedIn gives you the option to link to a website or blog. But by default, the text that shows in your profile is the extremely dull “Blog” or “Website.” Anyone visiting your profile has no clue where they’ll end up if they click on that. Want to use your actual brand or business name? You can! Here’s a simple little trick. When editing the Websites area of your profile, select the “Other” option. Now you can add your own website title and URL. Personalize Your LinkedIn Profile URL When you created your LinkedIn profile, it had some ugly combination of letters, numbers, and backslashes that had no value for your personal branding. You don’t still have this, right? If you do, it’s time to customize your public profile URL. For example, my customized URL is https://www.linkedin.com/in/jenndonovan. LinkedIn makes it simple to keep your profile consistent with your other social profiles. Add Shiny New Sections to Your Profile LinkedIn lets you add several sections to give your profile more visual appeal and depth. You can add sections for posts, volunteering, languages, honours and awards, patents, causes you care about, and many more. All these sections open you up to more opportunities to make new connections. Tidy Up Your Endorsements People are going to endorse you for all sorts of skills — sometimes even skills you don’t actually have. But just because you’ve been endorsed for Fire Eating, Chewing Gum, or Showers (yes, these are all real “areas of expertise,” according to LinkedIn) doesn’t mean you have to show other LinkedIn users — unless, of course, fire eating plays a critical role in your professional life. LinkedIn lets you remove any irrelevant skills and endorsements. You should avoid “lying” about your skill set, even if it is by omission. Connect With People You Don’t Yet Know One of the biggest mistakes people make on LinkedIn is failing to reach out to connect with people you want to know but don’t yet. That’s the whole point of networking — getting to know new people, not just established connections. Building out your LinkedIn network has many benefits. You get in front of influencers. You get more endorsements. More people see your best content, share that content, and visit your website. And it’s great for personal branding. Have you considered using LinkedIn more like Twitter? You should! Personalize Invitations to Connect “I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.” The default message LinkedIn provides is so dreadfully boring and impersonal. When you invite someone to connect, make it more personal — mention where you met or a topic you discussed in a LinkedIn group, over email, or during a phone interview. This personal touch will increase the odds they’ll accept your request. And when someone accepts your request to connect, don’t start pitching your service or product. This is a relationship killer. Start slow. Comment on, share, or Like their posts. LinkedIn even makes it super simple to stay in touch, telling you when contacts are celebrating work anniversaries or starting new jobs. Again, these are opportunities to Like or comment. Build the relationship and trust before you start asking for favours!   Publish Amazing Posts LinkedIn posts offer another way to grow your influence, gain more visibility, and acquire new followers. Your existing connections are notified whenever you publish. New people can discover your posts via search. Always think about the audience you want to reach. Highlight your expertise and interests by posting awesome content. Just make sure your posts are appropriate for the 400 million business professionals who use LinkedIn. Find and Join Groups One way to start connecting with people you want to know is to join LinkedIn groups. Whether it’s a group run by a major publication, a group for people with certain job titles, or a group dedicated to a niche topic, there are millions of groups to choose from, so start searching to find groups that are right for you and join them. Join discussions. Start interesting discussions. Don’t sell your product or service or promote yourself — sell your expertise! That will help build your personal brand. Remember Where and When You Met What’s-His-Name Once you’ve grown your network to thousands, it can be a bit daunting to remember every single person, or to stay in touch with a few important connections. Luckily, LinkedIn makes this easy. In the Relationship section, in addition to telling you the date when you connected, LinkedIn allows you to write notes about your contact, including how you met, or set reminders to “check in” at intervals from a day to every year. Don’t worry, these notes and reminders are only visible to you! Use (but Don’t Abuse) Status Updates LinkedIn status updates are your chance to highlight some of your recent work, share an article or book you’ve read, promote your presence at a conference or event, or offer inspiration through a quote or saying. Because LinkedIn is a business network, it’s best to use it during business hours. Keep active, but don’t go overboard. Try to post an update at least once a day at minimum; aim for a maximum of three or four updates per day, as long as you’re sharing useful, relevant content. Every update is another opportunity to strengthen or forge a connection. Ask for Recommendations So, you haven’t received as many LinkedIn recommendations as you’d like? After all, it takes a bit of time and thought for someone to write a recommendation. What can you do? Ask for them! LinkedIn makes is super easy, providing an “Ask to be recommended” link, where you can specify what you want to be recommended for, who you want to recommend you, and write a personal message. Pick specific people. Don’t just randomly ask all your contacts if they can recommend you. Be selective. Share details in your message to your connection. If there are specific skills you want your contacts to highlight in his or her recommendation, don’t be shy, tell them. Another way to increase the likelihood that you’ll get a great recommendation: Give a great recommendation to someone you’ve worked with. This increases the odds that your contact will feel obligated to return the favour. Bonus Tip: Export Your LinkedIn Connections One last helpful tip: Remember to occasionally download your connections. After you’ve gone to all the trouble of building an amazing network, you don’t want to risk losing their contact info! Click the Me icon at the top of your LinkedIn homepage. Select Settings & Privacy from the dropdown. Click the Privacy tab at the top of the page. Under the How LinkedIn uses your data section, click Change next to Download your data. Note: You may be prompted to sign in. You’ll be redirected to the Download your data page where you can select Connections. You will receive an email to your Primary Email address which will include a link where you can download your list of connections.   Now you have a file containing your contacts’ first and last names, email addresses, job titles, and companies.  Which you could then upload into Facebook and serve them an ad for something you think they would be interested in. Summary Now you know everything you need to do to refresh your LinkedIn profile. Make yourself look amazing, wow future connections, and grow your influence. It all starts with a killer profile. Countdown to the MATCH

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 4, 2016 20:48

I want to break format today and talk exclusively about the personal statement this episode. I know a lot of you already have one, or have at least a draft of one, but with enough time between now and September 15th (and even after that) I will help you make it better.   I think there is a sort of comfort level and confidence that med students approach the PS with and that is fair - because all of your previous personal statements up until now worked. Lots of positive reinforcement - positive thing - however those were personal statements for you to convince people you are good at reading, studying, and taking tests. Residency is a job. Literally the first “real” job you will have as a physician. This is a personal statement to convince programs you deserve a job.  Lean away from telling them you have objective skills, and towards subjective skills. Demonstrate professionalism, communication skills, teamwork, goal setting, and understand the challenges and demands of the road ahead, and still want to make a living at it. Almost breeds an inherent difficulty as the typical med student had curriculum focused on math and science, or at least prioritize them over language and arts, now asked to produce a written piece that we are not necessarily that comfortable with. To add to the discomfort this a rare moment that you are both the salesperson and the product. NRMP data from the 2014 program director’s survey ranks it as the fifth factor used when deciding who to extend interview invitations to (Step 1, LORs in the speciality, MSE (Deans letter), step 2 CK, then personal statement) and about halfway down when deciding who to rank - so it is up there to get your foot in the door. I would consider it one of the only subjective methods to tell your story before the interview - CVs and transcripts, USMLE scores all fit into boxes well, LORs and dean’s letter are what others say about you - PS is the only chance you have to tell you story - talk about yourself.   More important to a program that does not know you - no rotations, no sub-Is, no away rotations - how are they going to get to know you and your work ethic?   Opportunity to briefly explain any gaps in your record - if done carefully and cast in a positive light   Proficiency in english language - for IMGs from unknown schools   Behavior patterns: Writing styles that can identify positive or negative behavior traits - I,I,I,I - narcissism, whereas too much self-depreciation or responsibility sloughing may shine through   If you haven’t looked at MyERAS yet - there is no specific prompt - extremely open ended - what should you write about?   Personal statements need to be:   Written by you   A study performed by the Brigham and Women's Hospital In Boston, Massachusetts published in MedScape article ''Level of Plagiarism in Residency Application Essays Worrisome'' revealed that 13.7% of Personal Statements submitted by IMGs to IM, Anesthesiology, and Surgery programs at the hospital were plagiarized.   Plagerism http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26462161 - plagerism scanning software in anesthesiology applications 4% of US grads, 13% of IMGS 8 words or more of unoriginal content - as much as 58% percent of the statemetn unoriginal.   Polished of all spelling errors - spell check, multiple edits, multiple proofreaders.   Friends and family are ok, but they already like you - i recommend involving a third party for an unbiased approach   Reddit / SDN “PS swaps” are a decent choice - although the opinion of other 4th years is not necessarily the best   Does benefit you to get it read by someone who has done it before - even last year’s MS4s / current interns.   Read it out loud - clear / concise wording   Polished of all grammatical errors   I love Grammarly /   Consider using a professional service / scribindi / fivver / odesk / Match Gurus   Formatted appropriately for MyERAS - one page, 600-700 words - ASCI formatting - so no bolds, italics, or underlining shows up - no emojis - you need to make your points pop with actual english words.   The MyERAS application can be viewed as a PDF version of the information entered in MyERAS by selecting View/Print MyERAS Application located on the Application section on the Dashboard and top-right area of every page under the Application section. This allows you to see how the contents of the MyERAS application will be displayed to programs. Steps to take: Start now - sometimes attendings ask for PS and CV for writing your LORs   Brainstorm - entertaining stories, even and maybe especially even inappropriate ones - what elements of your personality can you draw out of those moments?   Structure - opening, closing, know what you want to say and how you want to say it   Aim for a balance of past, present, and future in the speciality   Familiarize yourself with the ERAS requirements - length and formatting   Don’t be afraid to start over - if you hit on something that really resonates with you - start again   Answer the obvious questions - why this speciality, why do you think you will excel? http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25342950 - 2012 resident class of UC Davis Derm residents matched vs unmatched - surprisingly those that specifically why they liked derm were higher in the matched, much higher trait were those who mentioned their desire to contribute to the medical literature.   Know your audience - all interviewers, not just PD, will look at to ask questions.   Know that if you are applying to different specialties, can use different statements, you can upload specific versions to specific programs if they have specifics in geography and school name - just make sure to send the correct one.   Things to avoid: Lies / exaggeration   Plagiarism   Dashes / slashes, short abbreviations   “I knew i wanted to be a doctor when”   The opening impact statement / the opening quote “webster's defines” - overdone, may come back like fashion waves. I am personally guilty of this in a previous personal statement   Anything too outrageous - no ZDogg raps here - works well for him now, but don’t forget that he is still an internist from Stanford. I would actually love to have him on the show and find out his advice - I’ll reach out to him.   Too long = too boring   Don't talk shop - avoid medical jargon - these people already know more than you   Do not restate your CV in narrative or prose form   Don't rehash your medical school PS - you are already “in medicine” this is a statement of why this specialty - why specifically pathology or why specifically dermatology   Dont talk about personal illness - boring and an illegal question if they ask it another way - may even add some unconscious bias - just avoid it   No mention of religion, politics, or any other controversial issue. NOt a soapbox   Pearls and resources: Knowing what I know now, if i were reapplying to family medicine, I would talk about my newfound passion for growing food, how I arrived at that passion through personal weight loss journey, then see health benefits in individual patients in published medical literature in Mediterranean diet, anti-inflammatory diet on cardiovascular risk, community health as far as community gardens, how these real live social networks help educate and promote health, simple upstream interventions that benefit pubic health. That can demonstrate an understanding of preventative health, community outreach, knowledge of health literature, goal setting and achievement, it is relevant to the specialty, personal reflection, long term involvement.   Medfools   AMA has good resources   UNC   ECFMG   MCW sample personal statements   Really knock it out of the park, talks about various sentence structure, diction and word choice, crisp and elegant writing, “The Elements of Style” by Strunk
