One major way of innovating is to move into a domain with transferable and out of the box skills/ideas/technology. This presents obvious opportunities  for radical change yet naturally produces equally obvious challenges. In this episode we look at how 4 co-founders created a payments infrastructure Fintech that now connects an amazing 7.5 billion bank accounts, 6 billion cards, connect banks in 144 countries and have 620 employees with offices in 35 countries. Ani came from FS and so understood not just how money currently moved but also the super-importance of understanding that its an incredibly regulated business. The other three co-founders came from the telecoms world and had no idea of how money moved. However they brought in what the telecom industry does very well – namely builds at scale, can process small volume transactions and deliver them instantly. Topics discussed include: moving a family from one country to another importance of getting outside one's comfort zone the value of cross-cultural working in terms of leading to creative and open thinking Ani's daughter can speak 7 languages (!) getting out of the box = getting out of the comfort zone importance of asking dumb questions “we just challenged everything and today that is probably the main reason we are the fastest growing company in this space” the simple Ur-notion behind Terrapay's foundation was that if an SMS can be delivered to anyone in the world instantly why can one not do the same with money? this concept versus the actual time and cost of sending money being waaaay higher than an SMS cashing US cheques in the UK – one would never imagine that Fintech existed transferability of competences – eg Sales in any domain to be done well needs a deep sense of understanding a customers pain and relieving that technology is similar (but different in eg APIs, protocols etc) cross domain – however note various strengths eg of telecoms tech versus FS tech the ever-changing landscape of technologies that customers can use which parts of the organogram are so key one needs either a co-founder or a super-senior C-suite colleague in order to innovate radically the need for confidence to ask “silly questions” answers to “dumb questions” that reveal core beliefs in a vertical rather than actual facts MotoGP and radical innovation as a case study the criticality of binding energy both within the co-founders and within the company culture in re company motto “stay hungry, stay humble” the Navajo and cultural preservation over millennia how does one know whether something that hasn't been done before can be done? budget and timescale, business savvy and feel in re finding problems that will last long enough to make the huge effort to produce a really radical solution worthwhile and long-lasting key takeaways on the experience of doing all this “Be prepared for a rough ride… you will have more tough and bad than good days” “Try to find simple solutions for a larger problem set” WhatsApp as being exemplary of One Great Solution – namely, unlike SMSs, being able to know when your message has been read and this as fundamental to their success shoutouts for Terrapay “no consumer knows us but we are the plumbing behind moving money around the globe” And much much more

A Blueprint for the Milky Way's Stellar Populations IV Spectrum-based Empirical Corrections and the Galactic Starburst Sequence by Deokkeun An et al. on Sunday 16 October We continue our series of papers on phase-space distributions of stars in the Milky Way based on photometrically derived metallicities and Gaia astrometry, with a focus on the halo-disk interface in the local volume. To exploit various photometric databases, we develop a method of empirically calibrating synthetic stellar spectra based on a comparison with observations of stellar sequences and individual stars in SDSS, SMSS, and PS1, overcoming band-specific corrections employed in our previous work. In addition, photometric zero-point corrections are derived to provide an internally consistent photometric system with a spatially uniform metallicity zero point. Based on our phase-space diagrams, we find a strikingly narrow sequence in the rotational velocity ($v_phi$) versus metallicity ([Fe/H]) space for a sample of high proper-motion stars ($>25$ mas yr$^{-1}$), which runs along the Gaia Sausage/Enceladus (GSE) and the Splash sub-structures, and is connected to the disk. Notably, a rapid increase of $v_phi$ from a nearly zero net rotation to $200$ km s$^{-1}$ within a narrow metallicity interval ($-0.8 < {rm [Fe/H]} < -0.2$) suggests that these stars were formed on a short gas-depletion time scale. Based on measurements of a scale height and length, we argue that they are distinct from stars dynamically heated by mergers, and are the relics formed during the starburst when the young Milky Way encountered the gas-rich GSE merger. The chain of high proper-motion stars, which we dub the Galactic Starburst Sequence (GSS), provides evidence that the post-merger metal-enriched gas settled onto the disk. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07542v1

The Rotation of SuperMassive Stars

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2022 0:40

The Rotation of SuperMassive Stars by Lionel Haemmerlé. on Wednesday 07 September Supermassive stars (SMSs), with masses $>10^5$ M$_odot$, have been proposed as the possible progenitors of the most extreme supermassive black holes observed at redshifts $z>6-7$. In this scenario ('direct collapse'), a SMS accretes at rates $>0.1$ M$_odot$ yr$^{-1}$ until it collapses to a black hole via the general-relativistic (GR) instability. Rotation plays a crucial role in the formation of such supermassive black hole seeds. The centrifugal barrier appears as particularly strong in this extreme case of star formation. Moreover, rotation impacts sensitively the stability of SMSs against GR, as well as the subsequent collapse. In particular, it might allow for gravitational wave emission and ultra-long gamma-ray bursts at black hole formation, which represents currently the main observational signatures proposed in the literature for the existence of such objects. Here, I present the latest models of SMSs accounting for accretion and rotation, and discuss some of the open questions and future prospects in this research line. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.02790v1

Online frauds: The precaution we should take to protect ourselves

The Reserve Bank of India in its annual report said that Covid-19 pandemic fuelled the proliferation of digital modes of payments. As money grew on virtual platforms, so did the tech-savvy fraudsters. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, the cyber-crimes saw a surge of 12 per cent last year. And just like the real world, the law enforcement agencies are on toes to curb frauds in the virtual world too.   And if you thought that just the elderly and technically-challenged people fall prey to cyber frauds, then you are mistaken. Seasoned fraudsters who work full-time to cheat people have spared none. Let us see what methods these fraudsters adopt to swindle money. As the maximum financial transactions take place through United Payments Interface or UPI, this platform witnesses the most attacks. The fraudsters use a basic feature of UPI apps called ‘collect request' for cheating. The collect request feature on UPI apps lets you request others to pay you a specified amount. This type of fraud is most prevalent on platforms like OLX, Quikr and Telegram. Assume that you are a seller who just listed your phone for sale on OLX. The fraudster will call you to show interest in purchasing the phone. He may even insist on paying an advance even without taking a look at the product. And in the next step, he will send you a UPI collect request after taking your phone number or the UPI ID. The scammer promises to transfer the money to you, but instead sends a request demanding money. But the unsuspecting seller, thinking that it is a request to accept money, approves it following which money is debited from his account. The most important thing to remember here is that receiving money via UPI takes no effort and you are not required to enter a PIN for that. Sometimes the fraudster may also send you a collect request in the form of an image of a QR code and ask you to scan that in order to receive money. One need not even open the UPI app to receive money. If you receive such a money request, you can simply decline it. Another popular method of fraudsters is to pose as bank officials and cheat people by gaining remote access to their mobile phones through an app. In this scenario, a caller tells you that your KYC is invalid or that your debit card is blocked. He then asks you to download an app on your mobile phone through an external link. Once you have installed the external app, the scammer can see and control your phone through it. And, in a matter of minutes, the fraudster empties your bank account using your credentials. He will also be able to see the OTPs that you may receive for these transactions.  Cyber criminals also use fake apps which look very similar to the official app of a bank or a company. So, never click on any external link sent by to install such apps. It will share your sensitive data that will allow fraudsters to steal money. Install apps only from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. Not just this. Cyber criminals use sophisticated phishing attacks by designing websites that look similar to bank websites. Links to such sites are sent as SMSs and e-mails to customers. Customers are then persuaded to enter sensitive information including internet banking credentials, which is used to make fraudulent transactions. So, users must verify the URLs of the website more than once to stay safe. Always keep in mind that financial institutions will never ask for sensitive customer information such as OTPs, debit card or credit card details, card security code and UPI ID or PIN. And if you realise you have been cheated, alert your bank immediately as that may help in recovery.

You have been given the most amazing body. Complex. Intricate. Beautiful. Totally amazing! It's God's gift to you – and it's been purchased with a price. So what makes us think that God's not interested in how we treat it? Huh?   Don't Smoke It's something I understand really well because I used to be a very heavy smoker. It's just over 30 years since I gave it up, but I remember it as though it were yesterday and still today, there are some times when I feel as though I could have a smoke. Frightening – the grip of that addiction, and depending on where you live, you may have seen a reduction in smoking recently. We certainly have here in Australia, but let's just stand back. This is a global radio program, heard in over 160 countries around the world, and so let's look at the global statistics. Here they are. About one-third of the adult male population smokes, with smoking-related diseases killing one in ten adults globally. Today, that means smoking causes four million deaths a year, but if current trends continue, by 2030, it's going to be killing one in six people. Today, one person dies every eight seconds from smoking, and why wouldn't they? About fifteen billion cigarettes are sold daily. That, believe it or not, is about ten million every minute, and to put all that into perspective, about twelve times more British people have died from smoking than died as a result of World War II. Now I could continue to rattle off the statistics ad infinitum, but you're getting the point. Right? These days in most countries, every cigarette-packet sold comes with a warning. Here in Australia, we have some of the toughest plain packaging and warning laws in the world, with grim photos of cancerous lungs and feet with toes rotted off them, and by the way, those cigarettes are hellishly expensive. So, why do people start smoking? It's mostly psychological. Peer pressure for young women; people are seduced to try a smoke by its glamorisation, and once they're hooked, the physical and mental addiction makes it really hard to quit. If you're a smoker, the single-biggest thing that you can do to improve your health, extend your life-expectancy, and increase your sense of wellbeing is quite simply to give up smoking. As I said, it's just over 30 years ago that I gave up smoking. It was around 7 pm on 24 January 1983, and this is the story of how I quit smoking. It was an early evening; I was in a hospital-room as I watched someone die of cancer. She'd been a smoker earlier on in her life. The cancer had spread right throughout her body; she'd left a note, ‘Make this the end', so they withdrew the treatment, food and fluids, and I watched her take her last breath. As I walked out of that hospital-room, I threw a half-packet of cigarettes (Benson and Hedges extra-mild) into the grey metal bin outside the room. Cold turkey. I haven't smoked since. It's a pretty dramatic way of giving up cigarettes, but then smoking has a very dramatic outcome. I had started just a few years earlier, in my late teens. I was in the army, at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in the Australian officer's training academy. We went on an exercise and a huge, cold, wet storm had blown in. Young, incredibly fit men were dropping from exposure. Our packs were miles away; the trucks couldn't get through on the treacherous roads, so we had no wet-weather gear; no cold-weather gear; no tents (or hutchies, as we called them for some reason back then). We were at the mercy of the elements. One of the blokes generously offered me a durry (that's what we called cigarettes back then in the army); it was the only warm thing going, so I took it. Of course I coughed and spluttered as the smoke invaded my body, but that was it. That's all it took. I was hooked, and in a few weeks, I was smoking three packets of twenty-five cigarettes a day. That's seventy-five smokes every day! This was back in the day when you could smoke at your desk; I could easily go through a packet on a night on the town; between that and the alcohol, I'd wake up in the morning with my mouth feeling like the bottom of a cocky's cage, as we used to say. Charming. I was a chain-smoker. I tried to give it up, but to no avail. As bad as it was for me, as much as it made me cough and splutter and wheeze, as much money as it cost me, and as antisocial and disgusting as smoking is, I just couldn't give it up, until I watched that woman die. The days, weeks, months and years that followed weren't easy. The cravings were huge. For years later, I would still reach into the top drawer of my desk to pull out a packet of cigarettes. I'd check to make sure my lighter was in my pocket before I went out, but the thing that did it for me, one craving at a time, was the memory of watching that woman breathe her last breath, and the grief that it wrought in a husband, in a family ... In a very real sense, her death saved my life. Of course, I could get run over by a bus tomorrow, and despite my level of health and fitness, I could prove to be a statistical aberration and drop dead of a heart attack or stroke or cancer; that's always possible, but it's far less likely today than if I was still an obese smoker. What's the lesson I learnt? Simple. I actually like my body. I like feeling incredibly well. I like sleeping well at night and being alert during the day. I love being able to exercise, and it's a great feeling to know that, all things being equal, I have a long and healthy life ahead of me. I'm now in my mid-fifties. To put it bluntly, I would never, ever want to go back to smoking. So, given that I've made it through exactly 30 years without a cigarette, you know what? I'm thinking I can probably make it through one more day. Smoking hastened my father to an early grave, and I had a good friend, Tom Curran, who died in his early fifties, and another work-colleague, Russell Abbott, who died in his late fifties. Perhaps you're a smoker. If you're listening to this, it's time to quit. These days your local doctor can help you; there are patches and sprays and lozenges, that can be deployed to ease you out of your dependency, and I know how tough that is, both physically and psychologically, but it's time to take the plunge. There are government programs; there's all sorts of help available, no matter how young or old you are. I had a very simple message for you today: Don't smoke. Do whatever you have to do to give it up, craving by craving. Now perhaps you have a loved one or a friend or a colleague who smokes, and perhaps today God's speaking to you through what I'm saying, and convicting you to get involved, and to help them and to encourage them. I know as a non-smoker, you think it's a filthy habit, and you wonder, "How can they possibly smoke?" Hey; I used to smoke three packets of fags a day and I see someone smoking today, and I'm asking myself exactly the same question. How did I ever do that? But understand that they are seriously addicted. It's tough. It's really tough to give up smoking, but having the understanding and the support, and the help of a family-member or a friend or a work-colleague is so powerful. The alternative for that smoker, whether it's you or someone else, is a massive heart attack at a young age, or lung cancer or gangrene, or any number of other horrible things, that will lead to a really grim and ugly death. Hey; God has a plan for your life, and for my life, and for everyone's life. I know that ‘cos that's what He says in His Word – the Bible. It's a good plan: Sure, with ups and downs; sure, with challenges and trials, but it's a good plan – a plan that for all too many is cut tragically short by this horrible smoking thing. I remember thinking to myself when I was a smoker, "Oh, it'd never happen to me". Folks, the research is clear. The facts are in. It absolutely will happen to every smoker. Smoking on average shortens a life by around (wait for this, it's staggering) twenty-five years. That's rather a lot. The message is simple: Don't smoke.   Sweet Dreams Sleep. It's something that we don't give much thought to, isn't it? We simply take for granted that we get tired, we go to bed, we wake up, we get going again, and that's the next day. But have you ever been so tired that you can't keep your eyes open? Have you ever been sitting through a meeting or sitting on the lounge at home, and you just can't stay awake? At that point, sleep's the only thing that matters. Our body is telling us it's time for bed, and there's nothing that's going to change that. We just have to sleep. The record for the longest period without sleep is (wait for it) 18 days, 21 hours and 40 minutes during a rocking-chair marathon of all things. The person who holds that record reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech, memory and concentration loss. In fact, so important is sleep to us, many of us take cat-naps with our eyes open even. People around us, we ourselves, are often not even aware of it. Now, new parents will know that feeling because the birth of a child typically results in somewhere between 400 and 750 lost hours of sleep for those parents in the first year of a child's life. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, and I know how tough it is when children come along. I remember sitting at my desk at the office nodding off, because I simply hadn't had enough sleep. Now a normal person takes somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes to fall to sleep in bed at night. If you fall asleep in less than 5 minutes, then that's a good indication that you're being sleep-deprived, and dreams – that's a whole different thing. We could talk for hours about dreams – the ones we have during rim sleep, that's rapid eye movement sleep, are typically characterised by bizarre plots, whilst non-rim dreams are repetitive and thoughtless with very little imagery. And by the time the average person dies, they will have spent around 25 years of their life asleep. Isn't that amazing? And yet, even though 99% of what medical science knows about sleep has been discovered just in the last 25 years, did you know that even today, science can't tell us what sleep is for? Why we have to sleep? Sure; there are theories, but there's no one scientifically proven reason for sleep. The amount of sleep we need? That varies from person to person, but pretty much, is somewhere between the 6 to 8 hours a night range, and we all know that our sleep is something like a cheque account with an overdraft facility. This is something I experience a lot. During the week, because I'm an early starter, I can be sitting at my desk at 4 am, preparing these radio messages. Sometimes I don't get to bed till 10 or 10:30 at night, so I could end up with as little as 5-and-a-half to 6 hours' sleep. If I do that for a few days running, I end up with a sleep deficit, and then on Friday night, I'll sleep for maybe 10 or 11 or even 12 hours to catch up. If it's been a particularly hectic week, Saturday night might be a longer sleep-night as well so that by Sunday, I'm caught up and I'm feeling fine again. I'm sure you've experienced that too. But here's the thing: Some people live in a constant sleep deficit. That's what I'd like to chat with you about today. Because if you're not getting the sleep you need, then there's every chance that your life isn't all that it should or could be. You know that feeling of constant tiredness? And some of that is caused by some of the things that we've been talking about these last few weeks on the program. If your diet is stuffed full of refined carbohydrates, then you are going to be carrying a bunch of extra weight. If you've been able to join me on the program, you might have heard me telling you about the large amount of weight that I've lost over the past few years (25 kgs, or around 55 lbs.), so I can tell you there is a huge difference between the quality of sleep that you get when you're a healthy weight as compared to being overweight or obese, as I was. I sleep so well these days. It makes a huge difference to my life. Back when I was carrying around all that extra weight, I was always tired. I didn't sleep well, and life was a misery. With all my heart, I believe (in fact, I know) that you and I have been put here on this earth by God with a purpose, and part of that purpose is to live the abundant life that Jesus promised to bring us. That doesn't mean that each day's going to be a sensational experience and that nothing bad's going to happen to us, but overall God's plan for you and for me is for us to live an abundant life – a life overflowing with God's goodness; a life when the overflow of His goodness to us has a huge impact on the people round us. Well, let me tell you, abundance and exhaustion simply don't go together. You can't live an abundant life when you're tired. God knows that. Psalm 127:2 says that God gives sleep to those whom He loves. God gets it, but sometimes we don't. We think that we can burn the candle at both ends – staying up late; getting up early in the morning, to do all the things we have to do. You know, 18 hours without sleep has the same impact on you as a blood-alcohol reading of .05, which in many places is the legal limit for driving a vehicle, and today I guess I just wanted to give you (pardon the pun) a bit of a wakeup call about your sleep. If you're not getting enough of it, enough good-quality uninterrupted sleep, then you're not living the life that you could be living because you're always tired, and from a health perspective, that's not a good thing either. Not only does a lack of sleep lead to more accidents and a far lower level of mental alertness, it can put you at a significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease (that's heart attack and stroke), high blood pressure, and Diabetes. Your sleep matters to your health and to the quality of your life, even if the scientists can't tell you exactly why that is, so here are some practical tips for getting a good night's sleep. I'm sure some of them will be familiar to you, but here we go. Firstly, make sure that the room where you sleep is dark and quiet and well-ventilated because your body temperature needs to drop by about a third of a degree for you to be able to sleep well. Next, get rid of all the distractions. Do you sleep with your mobile phone by your bedside with E-mails coming through and SMSs, or do you leave the TV on in the bedroom all night? Don't! Those things disrupt your sleep, and they affect you during the day. Then try to go to bed at pretty much the same time every night, and get up around the same time in the morning. The more your sleep patterns are in a regular routine, the better you're going to sleep. If you find that snoring or discomfort interrupts your sleep, then lose some weight. Just 3 or 4 kg can make the world of difference to the quality of your sleep. If you have some ache or pain that wakes you in the night – a bad knee, a sore hip, a shoulder pain, get it seen to. All too often we let those niggling things linger on, not realising how much sleep they're actually robbing us of. Try to have some kind of routine – something that you do each night before you go to bed, to train your body that it's sleep time. For me, it's a cup of hot tea. I do that most nights, and it's funny how the body goes, "Whoop! Must be bedtime". That should include a wind-down period, especially for men. There needs to be a clear separation between using your mind for something complex like work, and winding down to the point where you can rest. In that last hour before I go to bed, I won't let anyone get me to use my mind for something complex, otherwise I simply won't be able to sleep. And the last one is to lay the cares of the world aside. I do that by praying. Many-a time I've gone to bed with worries and burdens – things you could end up turning over in your mind for hours and you toss and turn and you have a restless night ... I always just lay them down in prayer. I give them to the LORD my God for Him to deal with overnight, and those things (99 times out of 100) give me a great night's sleep. Remember: You can't live an abundant life when you're tired all the time. Sweet dreams.   Your Body is not Your Own If you've been able to join me over this teaching series, either here on radio or online at Christianityworks.com, you'll know that we've rattled through some amazing statistics about how complex, how powerful, how intricate and amazing our bodies really are, but we don't need statistics to tell us that. Just stop and think about all the things that your body does for you, and that you're able to do using your body, without even having to think about it. Just the right amount of oxygen is what you take in. You expel the waste products, CO2 and all the other stuff without even thinking about it. You can see millions of colours, and your mind interprets what you see in an instant. You move without thinking. You have such an amazing body. You can recall billions of bits of information in an instant, and why wouldn't you have an amazing body? God gave it to you. It's His design; it's His hand-crafted exquisite gift to you, and it's the only body that He's going to give you in this lifetime. My favourite Old Testament Scripture is this. Psalm 139:13-18. The Psalmist's writing to God. He's saying: For it was You who formed me in my inward parts. God, You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; that I know very well. My frame wasn't hidden from You when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed substance. In Your book was written all of the days that were ever formed for me when none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are Your thoughts, o God, how vast is the sum of them! I try to count them; they are more than the sand. I come to the end, and I am still with You. Your beautiful body, hand-made by God Himself. He was there; He saw it; He made it happen; He chose the genes to lay down to make you who you are. You are so beautiful in God's eyes, and though some of us (me included for much of my life) don't treat our body with the respect that it deserves, it still is a beautiful creation. Let me ask you something: If Jesus knocked on your door today, and showed up with the most amazing present for you, would you just toss it in the corner and treat it with neglect? I hope not. And yet when we abuse our bodies by eating the wrong foods, by not exercising; not resting; by doing all the things we know we shouldn't be doing, that is in effect exactly what we're doing. We're tossing this amazing gift that Jesus has given us, our beautiful bodies on which our very lives depend, we're tossing them in the corner and treating them with neglect, and that my friend eventually comes back to haunt us. If you're pumping lots of sugary and refined foods down your gullet, if you've become (sad to say) a couch potato and you're not working up a sweat once a day or at least every other day, I can tell you this one thing for certain: The statistics tell us that you're going to die young, and that's no way to treat your beautiful body, this gift from God. Listen to what the apostle Paul says about how we treat our bodies to his friends in Corinth. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20: Don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. Okay. In this context, Paul's talking about sexual immorality, but the principle of glorifying God in our bodies applies equally to how we treat our bodies from a diet, exercise and rest perspective. The Bible doesn't talk much, if at all, about obesity or cardiovascular disease or Diabetes ‘cos none of those diseases existed way back then. They were lobbed in on us as we started eating the so-called western diet high in sugars and refined carbohydrates, somewhere along the way, in the 20th century. See, this is why we've been talking about this stuff. It's really important, but by and large, it's not in the Bible except for this reference where God tells us to look after our bodies – to glorify Him in our bodies. Friend, with all I am, I want to implore you today to take your body seriously; to respect it; to look after it. Because in doing so, not only are you going to be feeling a whole bunch better, not only are you going to be living a whole bunch longer, but you'll be honouring God – glorifying God in your body, this body of yours that was purchased at the most amazing price, by the death of Jesus Christ on that cross. And that, my friend – honouring God, hey; that's not such a bad thing to do.

Special Presentation on Agile Methodology Joshua: I am Joshua from Dorks Delivered. So, cool stuff I've done in the past are columns for an online entrepreneur magazine so that's something that's happened more recently. Published a book, a couple ago which I'm pretty excited about. Some of the different stuff and ways that we do business has been featured on news.com.au I've got a YouTube channel and a podcast as I already sort of pointed out there. Which you guys will all be podcast famous in a few weeks so, it's pretty exciting. Woo! In one way or another I've been a business owner for 19 years, with Dorks Delivered for 12 years. And I'm pretty keen on automating things. So my home, my lifestyle, and everything is automated wherever possible. Learn more about Agile Methodology at dorksdelivered.com.au A business owner needs to be able to automate everything. Not just when they're in their business and trying to get their processes and their staff all accounted and right, they need to make sure they're doing that in their home lifestyle as well, because if you're sitting at home and you're vacuuming, well you're not vacuuming if you're sitting are you? But if you're at home and you're vacuuming then you're wasting time a lot of the time. You need make sure that you're looking at every single process. That's the fish pond that I've automated, which goes through, uses the fertiliser coming from the, or the excrement from the fish is fertiliser across all the gardens, and does it all automatically. Looks at the amount of evaporation and goes nuts. Any questions? I can see a few confused faces. Speaker 5: It looks like a spa. Joshua: It does look like a spa! It's actually a dual tank fish, so you can have two different breeds of fish, sit out there in a little pond and have a look and they've got a little putt putt area up the top there. That I build around, so, just, fun stuff. You've got to automate your life. So with Dorks Delivered as I said, I'm an automation specialist through south-east Queensland. And what we do for business is remove poor time, time-poor, we bring time back to business owners by improving efficiencies and removing repetitious tasks. So I also help with sales and marketing to an extent through some of their social media aspects, but mostly all just as a holistic view, and point you in the right direction of how to get to the right person. So, what is agile development? As we sort of discussed, there's a waterfall methodology which is where you're producing something and then you're saying "okay now it's working, but it might have broken", and then you're going through a very, very, a process that's in series. There's a clear start and there's a clear end, but there's nothing in the, necessarily in the middle that isn't defined. It has a start, has an end and then the product is created. The problem with that is it's incredibly, tell me if I'm talking to quickly, because I say it and I just get excited. But the problem with it is, agile development, has a start, has an end, but costs a lot of money and doesn't make money most of the time throughout the process. And so the whole process of agile development costs a lot of money, needs a lot of capital and there's no money coming in from it. So, as I said, in a nutshell, it's creating the smallest most basic item that's scalable, that you can have sent off to your clients or sent out to market. So a good example would be Uber. Whoop I've gone too far. So Uber created their app on their phone so that you can rideshare and so on and so forth. Their intention is, and was, was and still is, to create autonomous vehicles but they needed to have acceleration, data and any other points of black spots and what-not... Of what's going around the area. So, Uber's intention is to create an autonomous vehicle, but they created an app that allowed for ridesharing, and used people, the meat in a seat, to achieve their objectives until they were able to have AI to a spot where they were able to then have it work. Because AI was going to be way too expensive, so they created a small product and then continued to develop the product, but had a known ending, but had a profitable product to start off with. So, any questions on how that all works? Any participation you get a prize. Speaker 4: Josh, it's just a, yes a question. So you said like, with agile development, there's like, you'd don't really get any sort of like, the potential return on investment until the end. So what you're saying now is with Uber, if you look at their agile development, you know, the intention was at the end was to have the AI intelligence that will make them, you know, self-automated. But what, so, they have got a return now, by implementing the first basic part of it. Joshua: So agile development gives you a return straight away. Or very, very close to straight away. Traditional models, or the waterfall model, means that you, they would have said, "we're going to make an autonomous vehicle" and they're going to say "okay, it's going to cost us billions of dollars but we have a clear defined outcome". Instead they've said "let's break this down into profitable steps, where we can then, use that". So although Uber appears as if they're in competition with DiDi and Ola and Lyft overseas, they're not really in competition with them and that's why Uber's balance sheets look like they're running at a loss. Joshua: Significantly. That's right. And then you look at others and you go "wow they're doing exactly the same thing, how are they running at such a loss?". So, and that's where their money is going, is- Speaker 4: But you generally find that people who are first, are the ones who end up losing all the money and then the others jump on it and like, like the DiDis and the Olas, et cetera, now they're using the same, but Uber paved it. Joshua: It depends, like McDonald's and Hungry Jack's could have the same argument. McDonald's and Hungry Jack's are pretty much exactly the same, but you've got McDonald's and it's definitely first, and it's still out there and I'd, it's definitely larger. It all depends. Uber's definitely got the name. No one says "I'm going to catch an Ola", they're going to go catch an Uber. They've changed the market. They've made it a level playing ground. From my house into Brisbane, it was a 20 dollar Uber, now it's a 46 dollar Uber, to get to the airport was 28 dollars and now it's something like 55 dollars. So all DiDi's done is they've just levelled the playing field. What Uber did is they said "let's crush", they did what Netflix did to Blockbuster, "let's crush the taxi drivers, once we've crushed taxi drivers, increase our profits". But you have the early adopters, and then you have the latecomers, and the early adopters and their... I'm not sure if I'm, that makes sense? The curve of where everyone sits in the adoption cycle. They would've known that someone was going to come along and copy the idea. But they would have had such a deep footing and grounding in what they've done, that it wouldn't have mattered, it doesn't matter a whole bunch because their end goal isn't to be competing with DiDi or Ola, it's just to be using their, the points of data. So for us, it looks like the same app, but what they're actually gaining, and the intelligence they're gaining from the app is far greater than what DiDi or Ola has does that make sense? For the questions, I'm going to give, you get a pair of fun, where is it? Green glasses! All right we can match. So has anyone heard of Beyond Meat? So Beyond Meat is this meat that has more protein than steak, more protein than most hamburgers, takes up 99 percent less landmass, has nearly all the health benefits of consuming meat, burns and cooks like meat, has haem in it the same as you have haemoglobin in meat, and to anyone that has not tried one of these, it tastes exactly like you've had meat. Has anyone tried any of these before? Grill'd, yeah they have them at Grill'd. They've only just recently come in there. And they're absolutely amazing. I tried when I went, you can't tell, if I gave that to a vegetarian, they would have sent it back to the kitchen they said "oh no this is terrible, this is meat". It, yeah, it flame grills a whole lot exactly the same. Anyway so, they created one product. Which is the Beyond Meat patty. And the Beyond Meat patty is absolutely revolutionary with the way that it works, and it means that it'll be a sustainable product that still gives you all the same benefits as meat into the future. Regardless of health and life choices and stuff, their intention was to have a huge range of products. But they obviously can't do that and be profitable if they're working on all these products at once. So they developed the easiest product that was able to sneak into the market as easy as possible. So, if you have a look at the predominant meat eaters, it'd definitely be America ever ever else, obviously India and Asia are significantly more vegetarian than they are anything else, even though they have a huge population. Jeff: So why does agile make a difference? Surely [crosstalk 00:11:24] the traditional project methodology, your goal was to produce the simplest product into the market as quickly as possible, why does agile make a difference? Joshua: It's about improving upon the original product, with a bigger end goal than just the initial project. Joshua: So the idea is testing the waters without getting your feet wet. You can use the agile methodology for anything, even marketing. So, as I said here, you can slowly develop your business without having huge cost outlay, is one of the big things. So from a marketing perspective, there are different ways that people use the agile methodology. So Dad and I, we've started a craft brewery. We've got ten different products that we've got on tap. We haven't got the licensing to sell it or anything like that, and the licensing to sell it and what not is quite expensive, when you don't know if it's going to work and people are actually going to enjoy the taste of your brew. So what we've done is we've created a survey, where when people fill out the survey, because we can give the beers away for free, when people fill out the survey and they try they beers and they go "yes this is fantastic", we pay a pre-order to buy a six pack for instance, when we have 6000 people on that list we then know that there's enough of a test there that we know that people would be interested in buying it, without having to then fork out the money for larger infrastructure and any of the licensing costs and so on and so forth. Speaker 4: So what will it cost you though, to give those 6000 beers for free? Joshua: Well the beers for free to start off with, the 6000 beers are quite cheap. Maybe 30 cents a beer or something like that. Speaker 4: Oh, okay. Joshua: Yeah, so it's very, very cheap. And in scale, cheaper than that. So that's why my wallet, it's better to be producing something that you can test the waters with. So if you need any help with the agile development process or anything in your business we can jump in and have a look at some of the projects that you're doing and make sure that you are doing them in the most efficient and effective way. So, what Steve Jobs did, is he has six different iPhones in front of his stand. On the six different iPhones one of them played videos, one of them received SMSs and calls, one of them played music and so on and so forth. So one of them had different apps that showed maps, and all these different things. Not a single iPhone could do all the things at once without crashing. Additionally, if you tried to, and you accidentally did it, it may start working and then crash mid presentation. So to save face, while he was showing everyone this revolutionary new technology, each different person with agile methodology was able to create the certain function working on each device, but not all of them together. He went up and said, "this is world-changing, this is revolutionary, everyone's going to have one of these in their pocket". And he's not half wrong. What he did there it was just fancy video editing, as he put the phone down and then picked it up, he already knew that it was going to be exactly the spot where it needed to be. Additionally to that, they had a tower that was put there by Verizon that, that was only paired to their phones that were on the stand, to make sure that they had absolutely lightning-fast speed, that had no congestion with everyone else that was in the audience. So, that is, that bit isn't really agile, that's just tricky. But having the different phones, knowing that you can do it somewhat, but you don't have the capital to continue producing a single device, and you don't know how well it's going to be received, this allowed for a world audience to see, pre-order the devices, continue to have the money to then build it out. Does that make sense? Does that kind of answer your question before on the, how it can be varied with the approach for agile development as opposed to just creating a full device from start to finish? Jeff: I'd be interested to know what your thoughts are on the difference between lean, agile and scrum, as delivering outcomes for small business owners like us. Joshua: With communication and branding you'd say that a lot of that would come to their marketing, and how well they're being shown on the web, making sure that everything's consistent. Yeah? Jeff: Oh, well I'm thinking about story-telling, so, if Steve Jobs you just gave is the best example of, any marketing story-telling, best businesses telling their stories. Joshua: That's correct. But if you went to a small business and you said "you need to make sure that your story resonates with your ideal client, and you need to make sure this you do that and this", and you said that the marketing budget is going to be $200,000 to make sure that we get your message our the appropriate people. Most business owners are going to be like "I can't afford that, I know that that's what I need to do, but I can't afford that". So let's test the water, use a long tail key word, sniper marketing, target a very test small audience, because you can't afford the $200,000 even thought you know that's going to work. You test a smaller audience, a subset niche of their target market, and then from that go "okay, that has worked, that is now bringing in an income", especially for startup business or something like, even if the income's not huge, it's bringing in then an income to then afford to then push the money towards the $200,000. So it's about, that would still be testing the waters, as opposed to knowing that you've got from start to finish the full solution. Speaker 4: Isn't that just the normal way that you would start a business? [crosstalk 00:29:17] don't startups just do that? Joshua: Do what, sorry? Speaker 4: Exactly what you're saying. You start with a smaller part of the market, make some money. Joshua: You should. That's exactly right. But even if you know that you need to have the larger portion of the market, or you're not necessarily a larger portion, but you need to market and brand in a certain way. Like I know that for instance, YouTube, cost the business a lot of money to produce a channel, it doesn't necessarily have a whole bunch of views, but the views that are does have, convert, and work towards our end goal in our business. So it's a functional platform, but most businesses when they start out they know, "if I have a YouTube channel I'll be able to get my message across more easily, be able to tell the story about what we do", but you won't necessarily be able to afford to be able to tell your story to the audience that needs to hear it. So, does that, am I explaining that right? I don't know, does that sound fair? So, sometimes you don't know how to go about finishing creating a product to service, and that's where we've sort of just said: "agile developmental design is your answer". That's what Steve Jobs did to make sure that they had a product, although they would have had the money and the market research that said "this product is going to work", they may not have wanted to spend the capital on something that might have flopped because there already was the Nokia phone that could do nearly everything, but it just didn't have the right story-telling and the right approach to it. So, security is another big objective towards agile development. If you don't have good security in your business, if you don't have good security practices, it will delay and push things out. One of the things that a lot of businesses, has everyone seen the HTTPS at the start of their website? So like, up until a couple of years ago, there was this thing, a vulnerability in it, that had been there for decades, for about a decade. Called heart bleed. Apple was aware of it. Apple had protected all their systems. Apple didn't let everyone else know about that. Apple was able to snoop and see any details that were deemed encrypted on everyone else's system. That's terrible. The OpenSSL protocol was able to be broken into. Certain people knew about it and other people didn't. The person that developed that was in their garage, just a home business that developed this and gave it away for free for everyone to use, and then everyone abused that, and that then opened up to mass hysteria when that came out of, the security problem came out about a year ago. So that's where you need to make sure you keep your eyes on the process and your security around all of the processes. Because if you don't, you, you'll have delays in the way that your product's going to be released.

The adoption of an SMS framework and thoughtful implementation of the various pieces can have a significant impact on protecting employees and enhancing your organization’s performance and profitability. Now, safety requirements may differ across industries; the best performing organizations focus on continuous improvement that achieves the ongoing reduction of risk with a goal of zero incidents. Yes, we do sometimes have to say that. And yes, just because you have zero incidents in a given reporting period does not mean the organization is risk-free. Like I always say, no injury doesn't indicate a lack of risk. But the best companies know this so they look at the individual components of the SMS that designed to achieve just that - lowered risk which nets us lower (or none) injuries — so focusing on the how gets us to the big aspirational goal. Ok, so let’s talk about the recent history of SMS and how it may impact the general industry and eventually construction over the years. According to the FAA, SMS is the formal, top-down, organization-wide approach to managing safety risk and assuring the effectiveness of safety risk controls. It includes systematic procedures, practices, and policies for the management of safety risks. Since requiring it in March 2015, the FAA says Safety Management System is becoming a standard throughout the aviation industry worldwide. It is recognized by the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO), International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and Civil Aviation Authorities (CAA) and product/service providers as the next step in the evolution of safety in aviation. SMS is also becoming a standard for the management of safety beyond aviation. Similar management systems are used in the management of other critical areas such as quality, occupational safety, and health, security, environment, etc. Safety Management Systems for product/service providers (certificate holders) and regulators will integrate modern safety risk management and safety assurance concepts into repeatable, proactive systems. SMSs emphasize safety management as a fundamental business process to be considered in the same manner as other aspects of business management. By recognizing the organization's role in accident prevention, SMSs provide to both certificate holders and FAA: A structured means of safety risk management decision making A method of demonstrating safety management capability before system failures occur Increased confidence in risk controls though structured safety assurance processes An effective interface for knowledge sharing between regulator and certificate holder A safety promotion framework to support a sound safety culture  The Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP) Final Rule in 2018 requires individual operators of public transportation systems that receive federal funds to develop safety plans that include the processes and procedures necessary for implementing SMS. Among other requirements, the rule calls on agencies to report their Safety Management Policy and processes for safety risk management, safety assurance, and safety promotion. And as many safety pros know, ISO has developed a standard that will help organizations to improve employee safety, reduce workplace risks, and create better, safer working conditions, all over the world. Participants in the new ISO 45001 development process used other standards such as ANSI Z10 as well as British OHSAS 18001, Canada’s CSA Z1000, and the ILO’s OHSMS guidelines. There is even talk of OSHA’s VPP getting more aligned to the ISO 45001 Standard. So you can see a definite trend emerging when it comes to SMS. So, in 2018, knowing ISO 45001 was coming, the National Safety Council (NSC) started investigating all the common SMS frameworks and identifying all of the things they had in common. They recognized many companies were getting bogged down with questions such as: What is a safety management system? How can it help me? Which framework is right for my business? How do I go about implementing an SMS? They knew the research supported the benefits of SMS implementation, but they wanted clarity on what that looked like and a simple way to illustrate what elements constitute a successful SMS. So let’s break down what the core features or functions look like - an effective safety management system has the following features or functions: People – nothing gets implemented without people who are committed, engaged, and motivated; real safety change can’t happen without a competent, skilled workforce. You need the RIGHT people in the RIGHT position within the organization. It isn’t enough to have an incredibly motivated and engaged front-line if all or most of middle to upper management is not engaged or supportive. So you need to put the right people in the right places in the organization from top to bottom. Planning – thinking ahead is half the battle of implementation; planning for foreseeable risks and the administrative parts of a management system will produce smoother rollouts and better measurement of SMS success. You need to be able to break down the individual elements necessary, assess your current state, and measure any gaps. These gaps are the space in which you will work. You have to be good at evaluating current-state - I cannot stress that enough. Programs – most companies have EHS programs that identify and control most hazards, monitor and measure operational impacts to EHS performance, and eliminate deviations from the management system; individual programs must operate as part of the entire system, not independently. So think about machine safety; you will need a robust maintenance management program to fully achieve the level of machine safety required. This means measuring preventative maintenance work orders that are past due, identifying maintenance items that are not just critical to up-time, but also to safety, such as sensors, overflow preventers, valves that are identified as safety measures preventing disaster. So integrating safety with other areas of the business is critical. Progress – to avoid complacency, companies need to periodically measure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements, audit their SMS system, and review SMS performance with upper management. So you need to be able to break down all the pieces of the SMS into logical parts. Like Electrical, Confined Spaces, PPE, and even roles and responsibilities as well as frequent inspections required. I recommend identifying champions for each element and have them “own” that part of the audit. They need to objectively score the organization’s effectiveness of the execution of each element. Get folks from outside the safety function to drive buy-in and accountability and should be an annual thing, but you can break out each element and cover some monthly. Whatever works for your organization. Performance – measures of performance need to be set and include both lagging indicators and leading indicators and moving toward predictive measures; adopting these and evaluating safety metrics among the entire business performance landscape helps companies solidify safety on equal footing with other critical operational practices – adopting a mindset of “safe operations” versus viewing safety apart from operations. So instead of asking how safety performance is doing, measure overall business performance with safety as a part of the overall measurement score. So if production was up, but incidents were as well, then there should be an adjustment made to the productivity score as a result - make sense? Again, this gets us past the whole conversation of looking at WIP, deliveries, and sales together and safety separately - safety performance impacts the others. The challenge for many safety pros is identifying the tools one can use to manage all of these moving parts. I will tell you that you need to look into a digital safety management system, like iReportSource. Whatever you tool you use, you have to make sure you can efficiently stay on top of all of these different elements; be able to report, and have others report, the necessary information so the organization can work to reduce hazards; record and track all of the activities associated with those efforts - that make them work; have access to all of the data when needed to make smarter decisions; be able to look back so you can assess your progress objectively and plan for future improvements. I call these the 4 R’s: Report: Hazards, concerns, incidents, suggestions, etc. Record: Training/qualifications, observations, inspections/audits, injuries/illnesses, environmental data, etc. Retrieve: Be able to produce reports and records when needed promptly. Review: Have the ability to look at all relevant data, so it tells the story of where you have been, what is taking place, and where you need to go in real-time and as efficiently as possible. It gets difficult to impossible to do this manually in most organizations of considerable size or with complex processes. So again, consider looking into a system to help you manage safety more efficiently and pays you back in time and frustration so you can get out from behind the desk and spend it where it matters most; out with your people where the work happens. Visit iReportSource for more information. Once again, a safety management system is a continuous improvement process that reduces hazards and prevents incidents. It protects the health and safety of your employees and is integrated into everyday processes throughout the organization. Investing in an SMS makes a measurable impact on your bottom line and can be viewed as a competitive advantage. Send emails to info@thesafetypropodcast.com. You can find me on LinkedIn! Snapchat Marketing: How to engage Generation Z in the UAE

Digital Disruptors

Meet the Snapchat marketing superstar in UAE’s higher education scene: Osaid Azeem. A pivotal figure at Canadian University Dubai’s marketing & communications team. Originally taken from our interview notes on http://blog.Ubrik.com , here’s how Osaid has turned an informal app such as Snapchat into a Generation Z (the demographic cohort after the Millennials) crowd puller.   How did the Snapchat ‘story’ begin for CUD? I have to be honest, when Snapchat began gaining popularity, it did not appeal to me at first sight. I immediately compared it to Instagram and found the poorer image quality and limited text off-putting. I first really experienced Snapchat through 'CUDSnaps'. It all started when I was covering our graduation event; I noticed all the students with their phones out snapchatting the event live! It became obvious to me this was a gold mine. If Snapchat is what our target demographic wanted, Snapchat is what they would get!   Did you run any activity to announce the launch? Although we did announce the launch of CUDSnaps on most of our mainstream communication platforms, I found we never had to market it aggressively. Our following grew quickly and soon doubled; making CUDSnaps the most popular communication channel among students within the university.   What was your first experience on Snapchat like? First time I ever used Snapchat, I didn’t know where exactly to go to be honest. Visually, it didn’t appeal to me. Once I started using it a little bit more I came to appreciate that while it was very different from Instagram, it had it’s own quirky appeal. CUDSnaps started with me literally walking around campus and posting about campus life. Since most students don’t know who handles the social media posts for the university, I could hide in plain sight! The hype caught on quickly, and soon all the students had their eyes peeled for the CUD snaps guy!   Tell us more about the creative genius behind the CUD Snapchat account As the buzz around CUD’s Snapchat grew, so did student curiosity! I remember tons of students replying to our snaps saying “Who are you?”. I think the fact that I never featured on any of the snaps added to the mystery. Snapchat always had me where the action was, so there were rumors it was being run by a student! Today Snapchat is by far our most effective means of communication, emails and SMSs in my experience are far less effective with the students. Most of them make sure they check snaps at least once a day because if you don’t- Poof! The story is gone.   How has Snapchat affected the management & business communications? I’m proud of the fact that we were the first university in UAE to have an official Snapchat account. I noticed other universities in Canada launch their Snapchat accounts roughly 10 months after CUD snaps was launched.    Is there a best way to manage an official Snapchat account? At first, I ran the Snapchat account all on my own. As it gained popularity and the variety of events featured on the platform grew, I knew I couldn’t be in two places at once so I developed a team of students that I could count on, and had them ‘take over’ CUD Snapchat for a day. Having students run the account intermittently helped me manage my workload, switched it up and kept things fresh as well.  Snapchat is probably one of the more challenging social media platforms in terms of management since it involves a lot of “winging it”. I come up with most of the Snapchat content on the spot. If there are multiple events at the same time, it can also get tricky for one person to juggle coverage since multiple people cannot log in to the account at the same time.   What do you say is the best feature of Snapchat? Geo filters. It took me 6 months to get a geo filter for CUD and it was a lot harder than I thought it would be! First, you create a geofence. This designates the area where you want the filter to be available. Next, Snapchat's map tool is used to create the fence and finally, a PNG file is uploaded. If you go to CUD right now, turn on the filters, you will be able to swipe and see the Canadian University Dubai geo filter.   How have other universities in the UAE reacted from this? There are only a few other universities that have started using Snapchat since we launched CUD snaps. Their snaps however are more information oriented and in my opinion, that is not what Snapchat works best for. Like I said, it is a time-consuming platform to manage well, I think that may be why most universities may shy away from using it too much.   Do you see any threat coming in from Instagram & Facebook stories? Not actually. As long as the youth get their privacy unlike other apps, Snapchat is here to stay   Is there any secret formula to Snapchat success? Right place, Right time. Snapchat was developed for a generation with a tiny attention span – that’s why it is so dynamic, visual and each snap only lasts 10 seconds. I would recommend keeping stories short and posting six snaps or less per story. Since you can skip snaps with the touch of a thumb, posts have to stay creative and stay relevant. The last thing you want is followers skipping through after 3 seconds because you couldn’t grab their attention in time.   Did you enjoy the episode? Please leave us a rating and review on iTunes.

How Startup Brands Can Survive in the Digital Disruptive Age   The four C’s that SMSs and Startup Brands must utilize to make it in this age;     Content: you must have content, as it’s said “content is king”, however not just any content, you must have relevant content which your audience will crave for, that meets their needs. Your content must be timely; there is nothing worse than dead news, so ensure that you deliver your content when it’s needed. You need content that has been tested and trusted; the fact that content is required doesn’t imply throwing unverified, untrusted information out there.   Connection: the first stage is to have relevant, trusted, timely content. The next step is to build meaningful connection with your audience; that is your market, fans and followers. Businesses thrive on relationships. Take time to build key relationships. Having great content that doesn’t resonate with your audience is futile, so by constantly engaging with your audience you will better understand their needs and wants which will enable you provide tailored made solutions for them.   Contacts: from your connection you step up your game by establishing key contacts; connecting with influential people who can help push your business/brand to the next level. Some of them are the gatekeepers in the industry which you seek to penetrate, without them it will be difficult to breakthrough such barriers. Your contacts are the people who have the ability and capacity to help you in various ways. They are influential in their various fields. Take time to make such contacts.   Contracts: your contacts should enable you get other clients, repeat business, and contracts. This is the last stage of the process of sustaining your business/brand in this age. Businesses exist to make profit (whatever that means to your business). Most often than not, it’s your contacts that will lead you to your contracts. That is to say your key relationships/influencers are the ones who will bring business to you. If you build this properly, your business will thrive, if not you will be firing arrows without hitting your target.   In conclusion, take note that big brands can readily afford mass media promotion to compete with price but as a small business owner and startup, focus on delivering outstanding offer with excellent customer experience to win. To survive in business today requires that you keep this cycle running constantly; to have something of value to offer – content, to build a bridge with your content – connection, to connect with key influencers – contacts, to get income coming through them – contracts.
