Michael Mahar: Rethinking Frames, Varroa, and Bourbon Honey (396)

What happens when a beekeeper with a zoology background, a manufacturing business, and a tendency to question conventional wisdom starts redesigning beekeeping equipment? In this episode, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman welcome Michael Mahar of 21st Bee, an Arkansas beekeeper and manufacturer who has spent years developing his own approach to bees, equipment, and even value-added honey. Michael explains how frustration with assembling and repairing conventional frames led him to design an injection-molded plastic frame intended to withstand years of abuse. He discusses communication passages built into the frames, multiple cell sizes, drone foundation, small-cell foundation, and the practical considerations behind his designs. The conversation then moves into more controversial territory: Michael's small-cell, treatment-free approach to Varroa management. Michael describes the selection process behind his locally adapted colonies, his unusual use of drone brood, and why he believes small-cell comb is only one component of a much larger management system. Becky adds important perspective on the research surrounding cell size and Varroa, while the group emphasizes that management strategies must account for location, colony genetics, neighboring beekeepers, and individual goals. Then things take a completely different turn. Michael reveals his painstaking process for producing bourbon-infused honey using carefully selected bourbon-soaked oak, different char and toast levels, temperature cycling, and months of tasting and adjustment. Frames, Varroa, genetics, bourbon and honey—this conversation covers a remarkable amount of ground. First Person with Wayne Shepherd

Pastor Steve DeWitt, author of Loneliness: Don't Hate It or Waste It, Redeem It, joins Wayne Shepherd in conversation on this topic.  (click for more…)Websites:  www.moodypublishers.com/loneliness, www.bethelweb.org Steve DeWitt, longtime pastor of Bethel Church in Northwest Indiana, talks about his book Loneliness: Don't Hate It or Waste It, Redeem It. DeWitt shares that he was a well-known "never married" megachurch pastor for over two decades before marrying his wife Jennifer (they connected after she read an article he'd written on loneliness), and he draws on that long stretch of singleness to reflect on loneliness biblically rather than as a book about marriage curing it. He distinguishes aloneness (neutral), loneliness (bad), and solitude (good), and outlines three ways people "waste" their loneliness — isolating themselves, becoming obsessed with unmet expectations, and distracting themselves through things like binge-watching or doomscrolling. He then turns to how to "redeem" loneliness: recognizing it as fundamentally a vertical longing for restored relationship with God (echoing Augustine and Chesterton), and then letting that drive people toward sacrificial, others-focused love modeled on Jesus rather than self-focused pursuit of companionship. The conversation closes with reflections on how social media and constant connectivity paradoxically deepen isolation, and DeWitt encourages listeners to examine their social media habits as part of a healthier response to loneliness.                                             NEXT WEEK:  Babbie MasonSend your support for FIRST PERSON to the Far East Broadcasting Company:FEBC National Processing Center Far East Broadcasting CompanyP.O. Almost no modern health consumer can evaluate whether their surgery was done well, whether their imaging was read correctly or whether a different drug would have worked better. Economists have a name for that kind of purchase, a credence good, and healthcare is the textbook case. So patients judge what they can see. The website, the search results and whether they could get an appointment. Chris Boyer and Reed Smith open with why that judgment is rational rather than unfair. Stanford's web credibility research asked more than 2,500 people what made a site believable and found design look led every other factor at 46.1% of comments, well ahead of accuracy of information at 14.3%. That research is from 2003 and the behavior has not moved. Meanwhile the audited quality data has been free and one search away for years, and it loses to the impression. Press Ganey's 2025 consumer work puts brand reputation at 86% of influence on choice. The uncomfortable conclusion is that the web experience is the first quality claim an organization makes, and it gets defended in budget meetings on cost per acquisition. The second segment follows the person for whom this goes badly. More than 30% of US adults lacked a usual source of care in 2022, the highest level in a decade, during a stretch of historically high insurance coverage. The federal government counts this. In the 2022 National Health Interview Survey, 21.7% of adults delayed or skipped care for a nonfinancial reason, and 10.6% because no appointment was available when they needed one. Nothing inside a health system counts any of it, because conversion, satisfaction scores and market share all describe people who finished something. Chris and Reed make the case that an abandoned search is the earliest visible moment of someone falling out of care, and that it sits in a marketing tool nobody has assigned an owner. Then Sondra Brown of MDRG and Chris Pace of SearchStax bring the research they ran on the digital front door. They walk through the collapse in whether people believe hospitals put care ahead of profits, why sites built against the org chart cannot serve a patient journey, and a verbatim from the qualitative work about what a dated website tells a patient about the medicine behind it. Chris takes on the argument that the website is dead in an AI-first world and explains why first-party content became more load-bearing rather than less. And they land on the number this whole episode circles, what happens to people who cannot find a new primary care doctor online. A quarter of them stop looking altogether. Enjoy the journey & create your own adventure.

225: Tantra, Touch and Connection: What Cathy Wood Wants Every Couple to Know

    The Penis Project

Episode Overview:  Melissa has been wanting to have this conversation for over a year. She first came across Cathy's work when two quite conservative couples independently told her a weekend tantra retreat had genuinely changed their relationship. Intrigued, Melissa enrolled (without mentioning what she did for a living) and attended with her husband. They both found it valuable. This episode is the result of that curiosity.  Cathy has been teaching tantra for decades, having first encountered the philosophy at age twenty through a GP who introduced her to the idea of loving and accepting her own body. She trained in India, continued her studies in Perth, and now runs Sanctuary of Ananda, a platinum-approved, internationally certified tantra school offering couples retreats, individual sessions, workshops, and online programs. She is also a published author.   The conversation covers tantra's broader philosophy (think tree, not just its roots), how it applies differently across life stages, what we can learn from it, and why emotional connection, what Cathy calls "emotional sex"  is the cake, while physical sex is just the icing. Cathy also addresses the misconceptions head-on: no, it is not a room full of naked people. It is fully clothed, accredited, and grounded in self-knowledge.    Golden Tip: Tantra is not what most people think it is. Tantra actually is a philosophy of self-knowledge, connection and embodied living and how its practices can help couples at any stage of life feel more connected, understood and alive.     In This Episode, We Cover  Tantra is a philosophy of self-knowledge: the sexual practices are just the bottom branches of a much larger tree  Mismatched desire is normal and cyclical, not a sign something is broken  Emotional intimacy is the foundation of physical connection, not the other way around  Men need love, nurturing and non-sexual physical affection just as much as women do  One person changing how they show up in a relationship can shift the whole dynamic  Tantra is suitable for singles as well as couples, in person and online    Key Message from Cathy   Cathy's work is grounded in the belief that every human being, regardless of age, gender, or relationship status, has the capacity for deep intimacy and pleasure. Tantra offers a practical pathway to get there, one breath and one honest conversation at a time.    Resources & Links  Click here for Cathy's website: Sanctuary of Ananda.  Cathy's Facebook: Sanctuary of Souls.  Book a telehealth appointment with our sexual health nurse practitioners at Restorative Health Clinic  For more information check out our websites www.rshealth.com.au , www.makehardeasy.com.au and www.melissahadleybarrett.com.au     Book a telehealth consultation with our sexual health nurse practitioners:  Restorative Health Clinic    For more information visit our websites:  www.rshealth.com.au  www.makehardeasy.com.au  www.melissahadleybarrett.com    Need Support?  At Restorative Health Clinic, we support men and their partners with:  Penile rehabilitation after prostate cancer treatment  Erectile dysfunction  Vacuum pump and constriction ring education and prescription  Penile injection therapy  Intimacy and sexual recovery  Partner-inclusive support where appropriate  Practical, evidence-based strategies for rebuilding confidence and function    We offer telehealth consultations Australia-wide and internationally, making it easier for men to access experienced, compassionate support no matter where they live. What if the biggest threat to online gambling isn't addiction or bad odds—but an invisible criminal economy operating alongside the legal one? In this preview episode of Travis Makes Friends, Travis sits down with Ismail Vali, founder of Yield Sec and a global expert on online gambling markets, to reveal how the industry has evolved from a money-laundering target into a massive data business. Drawing on more than two decades of experience working with sportsbooks, poker platforms, regulators, and governments, Ismail explains why the online gambling market is far larger—and far more complicated—than most people realize. The conversation begins with an unforgettable story: Ismail arrives for a job interview in Malta only to watch the company's offices get raided by police before the interview even begins. That close call opens the door to a broader discussion about how organized crime has infiltrated online gambling, not just to move money, but to collect valuable consumer data that can fuel long-term criminal enterprises. Ismail also debunks one of the internet's biggest misconceptions: that a VPN is a foolproof way to access gambling sites anonymously. In reality, he explains, modern online betting depends on speed and real-time connectivity, making VPNs far less useful than many people believe. Instead, illegal operators increasingly rely on being discovered in plain sight—through search engines, social media, influencers, and online advertising—right alongside legitimate brands. Travis and Ismail explore why illegal gambling continues to thrive even as more countries and U.S. states regulate the industry. According to Ismail, consumers often don't distinguish between legal and illegal platforms because they appear in the same digital marketplace. While licensed operators follow strict rules around fairness, consumer protection, and responsible gambling, unregulated sites can ignore those safeguards entirely while still attracting millions of users. The discussion also highlights the surprising economic impact of properly regulated gambling. Ismail argues that when governments successfully police illegal operators, legal markets generate tax revenue that can fund schools, hospitals, infrastructure, and consumer protections—particularly in developing nations where every new source of revenue matters. The challenge isn't eliminating gambling altogether, he says, but ensuring that the money stays within regulated markets instead of flowing to criminal organizations. You'll also hear how Ismail's team uses large-scale behavioral data to estimate global wagering, why he believes the online gambling market exceeds $5.9 trillion annually, and how his predictions for events like the Super Bowl have come remarkably close to the official numbers. If you've ever assumed online gambling is simply a choice between different betting apps, this preview offers a fascinating look at the hidden marketplace operating beneath the surface—and why understanding the difference between legal and illegal platforms matters more than ever. Hit play to hear why the future of online gambling may depend less on technology and more on transparency, enforcement, and consumer awareness. The conversation continues with an update on the University of Florida Honey Bee Lab, including Bee College, the Florida Master Beekeeper Program, ongoing research under Dr. Cameron Jack, and the future of the laboratory following Jamie Ellis' transition. Navigational Keywords - Business Strategies for Websites (Best Practices)The conversation focused on the critical role of navigational keywords in business website strategies and best practices for SEO. Several points were raised, including the distinction between informational and navigational keywords, the practical implications for website structure, and how search engines and users interact with these elements.Key Themes & ConceptsWhat Are Navigational Keywords? One concept discussed was the definition of navigational keywords: these are brand-specific queries used to find specific web pages or destinations within a website, such as "Brand + login," "Brand + pricing," or "Brand + contact." Navigational keywords contrast with informational keywords, which are broad and unbranded, like "best restaurant near me" or "how to tie a tie" 09:06.Why Are Navigational Keywords Important?A key theme that emerged was the way navigational keywords indicate high search intent. Users searching with these terms already know the brand and are seeking specific information or functionality—like product pages, contact details, or policy documents 10:15.How to Implement Best PracticesThe discussion explored actionable best practices for leveraging navigational keywords on business websites:Dedicated Pages: Businesses should create clear, dedicated pages for key navigational actions—such as /contact, /about, /pricing, /reviews, /careers—so that search engines have specific, easily indexed URLs to display in search results 14:03.URL Structure & Keyword Density: URLs should reflect the navigational query and use clear, hyphenated keywords to make it easier for algorithms and users to understand (e.g., yourwebsite.com/privacy-policy). Hyphens are treated as word separators by search engines 15:12.Sitemaps & Technical SEO: XML sitemaps act as a roadmap for algorithms to crawl a website efficiently. Keeping both HTML (what users see) and XML (what bots crawl) structures organized is vital 26:31.Regular Updates: Pages should be maintained and regularly updated. The two critical dates for each page are the date published and the date last modified—these inform algorithms the content is current and relevant, improving SEO performance 45:04.Importance of Brand & Action PairingsThe conversation emphasized that effective navigational keywords pair the brand with a specific action or destination (e.g., "Sephora privacy policy," "Amazon shipping"), which allows businesses to "own" those key queries and drive high-intent traffic 12:24.Measuring & Managing SEOThe discussion also touched on website management:The number of well-structured, dedicated pages can impact investment and SEO value 18:03.Regular auditing and technical optimization of all primary and secondary web properties ensures consistency, compliance, and discoverability 22:41.Understanding audience awareness stages (unaware, problem aware, solution aware, product aware, most aware) helps align SEO content and navigational structure with user intent 35:12.TakeawaysNavigational keywords are essential for brand recognition and conversion, providing shortcuts for users seeking specific brand information.Businesses should invest in user-focused, clearly named, and regularly maintained navigational pages to capture high-intent searches 43:06.Effective technical SEO, including XML sitemaps and proper URL structures, boosts a website's usefulness to both users and search engines.By adopting these best practices, businesses ensure their websites are easily navigable for users and highly visible to search engines, setting the stage for better awareness, engagement, and growth.Who Is This For?The conversation focused on business owners, entrepreneurs, creators, and anyone looking to optimize their website's visibility and effectiveness, particularly through the strategic use of navigational keywords. It is especially relevant for those responsible for maintaining or improving the web presence of a brand, including solopreneurs and those with multiple or complex sites seeking clarity on SEO best practices and site structure (00:01:45, 00:21:48, 00:39:24).Key Moments & SEO Summary with TimestampsIntroduction to Navigational Keywords & Series Context: Outlining the focus on keywords for website business strategies (00:00:10).Website as a Core Asset: Emphasizing the necessity of a website as a brand hub for discovery and operations (00:03:00).Value of Quick Links and Site Accessibility: How having links to websites, calendars, and resources streamlines connections at events (00:04:02).Technological Tools for Networking: RFID/NFC and QR codes as ways to share multifaceted digital presences instantly (00:05:27, 00:07:00).Defining Navigational Keywords: Explained as brand-specific, high-intent search queries driving direct access to internal pages (e.g. “Brand + Contact,” “Brand + Login”) (00:08:39-00:12:24).Site Structure & Essential Pages: Importance of clear, dedicated URLs for contact, about, pricing, policies, reviews, etc. for both users and search engines (00:14:03, 00:16:17).Keyword Density, URL Structure, and Modifiers: The technical aspects affecting SEO on navigational and branded queries (00:13:33).Role of Sitemaps and Algorithm Interaction: Front- and back-end elements (HTML/XML) and the importance of current, updated content (00:26:31, 00:28:12).Awareness Stages: Moving from “unaware” to “most aware” for web users and the importance of matching their journey (00:34:42-00:36:46).Regular Updates and Maintenance: The necessity of revisiting and updating site pages to keep them “alive” in the algorithm (00:44:46, 00:45:50).Summary and Call to Action: Clarity, connection, and proactive site management—with encouragement to take the next steps (00:47:12, 00:48:28).FAQs1. What are navigational keywords and why do they matter?Navigational keywords are search queries aimed at finding specific branded pages (e.g. “Brand + Contact”). They guide users directly to the information or action they seek, playing a key role in brand visibility and customer experience (00:08:39, 00:10:15).2. What essential pages should every business website have?Contact, About, Pricing, Privacy Policy, Reviews, Careers, Locations, Return Policy, and Service pages—all clearly labeled with descriptive, hyphenated URLs (00:16:08).3. How often should I update my website pages?Regular updates signal activity and relevance to both users and algorithms. Important dates include “published” and “modified,” which should reflect recent engagement (00:45:04).4. How can I connect multiple websites or domains effectively?Centralize branding, ensure consistent linking, and consolidate scattered domains when possible so search engines understand their relationship and users can easily navigate between them (00:21:57).5. What's the role of awareness stages in website strategy?Your content and site structure should serve users at different familiarity levels—from “unaware” to “most aware”—with easy access to relevant information at every stage (00:35:12).Action Steps from Favour Obasi-ikeAudit All Active Website Pages:Ensure every required page exists, is linked clearly, and contains current information (00:16:17).Check and Update URLs:Use descriptive, hyphenated slugs for internal navigation—e.g., /about-us, /contact, /pricing (00:15:12).Establish an Update Routine:Schedule regular reviews to update modified dates—especially for high-traffic or business critical pages (00:44:46).Centralize Links Across Platforms:Use tools (link aggregators, NFC cards, QR codes) for seamless access from all touchpoints (00:05:52, 00:07:00).Monitor User Awareness:Identify which stage (unaware, problem aware, solution aware, product aware, most aware) your visitors occupy and tailor CTAs and navigation accordingly (00:35:12).Encourage Feedback and Continuous Learning:Collect responses (like the “put a 1 in the chat”) to gauge clarity and adjust future content and site structures (00:46:10).Ready to Rank? Ben Tasker joins Jeff Mains to break down the real reason most AI rollouts fail: it's almost never the technology. From his time as Dean of AI at Southern New Hampshire University to building life-saving diagnostic tools at MaineHealth, Ben has seen firsthand how change management, human-centric strategy, and data quality determine whether AI creates value or amplifies chaos. In this episode, Ben introduces the concept of the "AI Between Times" — the transition period where organizations are leaving old processes behind but haven't yet arrived at a fully AI-integrated future. He explains why 95% of AI implementations fail, what separates the 5% that succeed, and how founders and leaders can build a culture of continuous learning that makes their organizations genuinely AI-resilient. Ben also shares a practical four-step learning cycle (Learn → Practice → Apply → Reflect) and makes the case that adaptability and flexibility — not technical expertise — are the most critical skills to develop right now.Key Takeaways[0:00] — Hook: 95% of AI implementations fail — not because of bad tech, but because of what surrounds it: poor rollouts, unengaged leaders, and broken processes that get automated at scale.[3:11] — Ben introduces the "AI Between Times" — the transition moment where organizations are leaving old processes but haven't reached AI maturity. Change management is the most overlooked factor.[5:19] — What the 5% do differently: transparent campaigns that communicate why AI is being implemented, where, how, and what not to do — plus training pathways and upskilling resources.[7:38] — Why people resist change: 66% of individuals currently hold negative AI sentiment, driven by news around layoffs, data centers, and high-profile failures. Trust and transparency are the antidote.[7:52] — The danger of a "point solution" mindset: using AI to solve one small problem without mapping the full system. Ben's pizza-ordering example illustrates how a narrow implementation can actually increase costs, erode trust, and kill adoption.[13:44] — AI doesn't fix a messy organization — it amplifies it. Garbage in, garbage out. Data quality and process integrity must come before the model.[13:45] — Ben's healthcare origin story: his first job exposed the cost of poor data infrastructure and uncommunicated change. Physicians worked around the system because no one explained the why.[15:27] — From community college to ICU: Ben's student success algorithm took 12 months just to get faculty buy-in — a timeline the data science team never anticipated. At MaineHealth, a similar algorithm flagged ICU patients for early infection, potentially saving thousands of lives.[21:11] — Why people treat AI as just a search engine: ChatGPT reached 1 million users in 5 hours — faster than the iPhone, the computer, or the internet. Accessibility doesn't equal strategy. Most people use 2–3 use cases and miss the full picture.[22:58] — Prompting is a skill. A prompt for a video, an image, and a report require different approaches. Without a learning plan, you're not using AI — you're guessing.[26:20] — AI's primary objective is to interact with you more. The more you use it, the more personalized it becomes. But that also means being thoughtful about what data you share.[31:25] — Ben's personal AI origin story: photographed workout equipment, had ChatGPT build CrossFit plans, then photographed his fridge for meal planning. That non-work use case built the prompting instincts he later applied professionally.[33:14] — AI augmentation is the sweet spot — not replacement. Most roles will incorporate AI; the job titles that don't exist yet (Dean of AI, prompt engineer) are proof the economy is already shifting.[35:48] — "Prompt engineer" has at least two completely different career paths — one for marketing professionals, one for PhD-level AI researchers. Organizations need to recruit by skills, not job titles.[42:47] — What successful large-scale AI transformations have in common: leadership engagement, middle-layer exploration, and org-wide AI literacy — treated as a cultural shift, not a one-time training.[44:00] — Context is the new data. Websites, job descriptions, PowerPoint decks — these become the data sources that AI ingests. If the context isn't clean and structured, the output won't be either.[40:13] — The Learn → Practice → Apply → Reflect cycle: where most people break down is the reflection step. Without asking "What did I learn? Did I like it? What would I do differently?" the cycle can't repeat effectively.[43:15] — Adaptability vs. flexibility: adaptability is accepting that change is coming; flexibility is navigating it once it arrives. These are the top two skills organizations are hiring for — and neither is a technical skill.[44:10] — Individuals who know AI earn a 52% pay premium over those who don't.[45:07] — The one investment SaaS founders can't skip: start using AI themselves and talk about it positively. Use your domain expertise to create context and systems that make your product AI-resilient before disruption forces the conversation.Tweetable Quotes"AI doesn't fix a messy organization. It amplifies it." — Ben Tasker"95% of AI implementations fail — and the 5% that succeed take care of the change management first." — Ben Tasker"You can use it doesn't mean you know how to use it. Just because you have access doesn't mean you have a strategy." — Ben Tasker"Data is the oil to the AI engine. Garbage in, garbage out — at scale." — Ben Tasker"If leaders aren't fully engaged with AI and using it themselves, the rollout is dead on arrival." — Ben Tasker"AI can amplify your organization, but it can also amplify your natural abilities. The two are not the same thing." — Ben Tasker"Context is the new data. If you're not setting up the system to succeed, the end result won't succeed either." — Ben Tasker"Individuals who know AI right now have a 52% premium on pay. If that's not an incentive, I'm not sure what is." — Ben Tasker"We're in the AI Between Times — not fully in the future, but moving out of the past. Change management is what bridges the gap." — Ben Tasker"It's not complete replacement. But it's also not forgetting to upskill your organization. Both have to happen." — Ben TaskerSaaS Leadership Lessons1. Ship culture before you ship the feature. Most AI rollouts fail because leadership announces the tool but skips the story. Before your team touches a new AI system, build a transparent change management campaign: communicate the why, the where, the how, and critically — what not to do. Your people will fill silence with fear. Fill it with clarity first.2. Don't automate a broken process — you'll just scale the chaos. AI amplifies what's already there. If your data is dirty, your workflows are fragmented, or your customer experience is inconsistent, AI won't fix it — it will magnify it. Map the full system front-to-back before you plug in any model. Finance, product, data, ops — all stakeholders belong at the table before implementation, not after.3. Point solutions are the fastest path to failed adoption. The pizza-ordering example is a masterclass in what not to do. When you solve one narrow problem without thinking about the full customer or employee experience, you create friction that erodes trust — and trust, once lost, is expensive to rebuild. Think in systems, not spotfixes.4. Leaders who don't use the tools can't lead the transformation. Mandatory AI training from a leader who has never opened ChatGPT is theater. Your team will follow what you do, not what you announce. Model the behavior. Use AI in your own workflows. Talk about it openly — including the failures. That psychological safety is what makes adoption stick.5. Skills are more durable than job titles. Roles like "Dean of AI" and "prompt engineer" didn't exist three years ago. The titles will keep changing. What won't change is the value of skills: adaptability, systems thinking, communication, analytical reasoning. Build a skills inventory for your organization and create learning pathways before you need to fill a role. Your next AI hire might already be on your payroll.6. The first 12–16 months are the egg — don't rush the hatch. Organizations that win with AI invest heavily in the foundation: data infrastructure, leadership engagement, org-wide literacy, and structured reflection. The ones that rush straight to implementation — running experiments with no strategy, no vision, no metrics — burn budget, burn trust, and burn out their teams. Slow down to go fast. The payoff compounds.Guest Resourcesbentaskerai@gmail.comhttps://www.bentaskerai.comhttp://linkedin.com/in/bentaskeraihttp://instagram.com/bentaskeraiEpisode SponsorThe Futureproof Series -

Shaun follows with the tactical side of AI search — knowledge gaps, listicles, AI overviews, and the new acronyms every marketer needs to know.Practical, tactical, and something you can start using today.Expect to Learn:Why 98% of your visitors leave without doing a single thing — and why your site might be the culpritThe three questions behind every high-converting site: drivers, hooks, and barriersThe "people are goldfish" rule — you get 3–5 seconds to answer what you do, how you do it, can you do it for me, and am I in the right placeWhy clear beats clever, why carousels kill conversions, and why short forms winHow search is shifting to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and TikTok — and what "topical authority" really meansThe AI knowledge gap strategy: writing listicles for niche roles and geographies nobody else ownsHow one client won 14,000+ AI Overviews in six monthsWhy SEO still matters — LLMs pull from page one, and they click anywhere on it, not just the top threeThe new alphabet: AIO, GEO, and AEO — what each one is and how to optimize for itWhy FAQs, schema, reviews, and press releases now do heavy liftingAbout the Guests:Becca Searns, Director of Creative Services, Haley Marketing Becca grew up with marketing at the dinner table. Sometimes the most memorable beekeeping stories have very little to do with honey production. This week, Jeff Ott and Becky Masterman welcome Nehemiah Ray, a Georgia beekeeper whose family's everyday life inspired the Sundance Award-winning documentary The Boys and the Bees. What began as a pest control assignment to remove honey bees from a home unexpectedly launched Nehemiah into beekeeping, live honey bee removals, and eventually a life centered around teaching others about nature, family, and stewardship. Nehemiah recounts learning beekeeping almost entirely through books, YouTube, and experience before joining the Metro Atlanta Beekeepers Association. He discusses the challenges of managing honey bee removals, maintaining survivor stock with an emphasis on naturally selected Varroa-resistant genetics, coping with Georgia's difficult weather extremes, and balancing beekeeping with family life and business ownership. The conversation then turns to The Boys and the Bees, the award-winning documentary that follows Nehemiah, his wife Eliza, and their two sons. Rather than simply documenting beekeeping, the film beautifully captures the relationship between a father and his children, the lessons learned from honey bees, and the importance of curiosity, courage, and spending meaningful time together outdoors. Jeff and Becky reflect on one particularly moving scene in which Nehemiah carefully guides his son through receiving his first honey bee sting—a moment that has resonated deeply with audiences and fathers around the world. Whether you're a beekeeper, parent, educator, or simply appreciate stories about family and nature, this episode offers a thoughtful reminder that honey bees often teach us as much about ourselves as they do about beekeeping.
