Orville and Wilbur Wright have been immortalized as the men opened the skies to human flight. But could they have achieved such great heights without the wind beneath their wings — their sister? Katharine Wright was her brothers' biggest champion, official spokesperson, closest confidante and the only one of the Wright siblings with a college degree. For years, Katharine, Wilbur and Orville were inseparable — until tragedy and a love affair upended everything. This is the story of the Wright sibling that history almost left out.Guests:Thomas Paone, museum specialist at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space MuseumTom Crouch, curator emeritus of the aeronautics division at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and author of The Bishop's Boys: A Life of Wilbur and Orville Wright

This podcast episode dives deep into the lessons Jesus imparts to this church, offering timeless wisdom that resonates with believers today.Main Content: **The Context of Pergamum** The Church in Pergamum existed in a city notorious for its pagan worship and idol practices, symbolized by the phrase "where the throne of Satan sits." TS Wright highlights that this church was located right in the midst of spiritual warfare, a battleground where faith and culture collided. Despite the overwhelming presence of evil, members of the church held fast to their faith, demonstrating remarkable courage and commitment.**Commendation for Faithfulness** Jesus begins His message with commendation, acknowledging the church's perseverance even in the face of persecution. TS Wright points out the significance of this acknowledgment, especially regarding Antipas, a faithful witness who was killed for his beliefs. This serves as a powerful reminder that true faith often requires sacrifice, and believers today must also hold fast to their convictions despite cultural pressures.**Warnings Against Compromise** However, the message is not solely one of encouragement. Jesus issues a stern warning against those in the church who have adopted the teachings of Balaam and the Nicolaitans, practices that led to idolatry and sexual immorality. TS Wright emphasizes that just as the early church faced temptations to conform to cultural norms, modern believers must also guard against the subtle ways in which culture can infiltrate their faith. He urges listeners to recognize the importance of living a life that is set apart, above the moral compromises prevalent in society.**The Call to Repentance** A key theme in this message is the call to repentance. TS Wright elucidates that repentance is a process, not just a one-time confession. It involves a deep heart transformation, turning away from sin, and taking active steps towards obedience. He reminds believers that while the journey may be challenging, the promise of restoration and a new identity in Christ awaits those who repent. **Living Above Culture** In a world where cultural acceptance is often equated with success, TS Wright's insights challenge believers to prioritize their relationship with Jesus above all else. He discusses the dangers of becoming a "carnal Christian," attempting to blend faith with worldly ideologies. Instead, he encourages a commitment to living out the teachings of Christ, even when it comes at a personal cost. The podcast underscores the importance of maintaining a clear distinction between faith and culture, particularly in moments of conflict. Conclusion: The message to the Church in Pergamum serves as a timely reminder for contemporary believers to navigate their faith with courage and conviction. Key takeaways include the...

In this podcast episode, TS Wright delves deep into the book of Hebrews, revealing the profound truth that Jesus stands as our mediator, providing us with the means to approach God with confidence.Main Content:Understanding the Power of the WordTS Wright begins by reading from Hebrews 4:12-13, emphasizing that the word of God is alive and active, sharper than any double-edged sword. It has the ability to penetrate our innermost thoughts and intentions, reminding us that nothing is hidden from God's sight. This powerful opening sets the tone for the discussion on our accountability to God, highlighting the importance of acknowledging our actions before Him.The Role of Jesus as Our MediatorWright continues by referencing Hebrews 4:14-16, where he reminds us of our great high priest, Jesus, who sympathizes with our weaknesses. This aspect of the message underscores the significance of Jesus' sacrifice, which provides us with the ability to stand before God unafraid and assured of His mercy.A Call to Faith and RepentanceWright challenges listeners to reflect on their relationship with Jesus, asking if they have embraced Him as their high priest and mediator. He emphasizes the necessity of recognizing our sin and seeking forgiveness through Christ. This call to faith is crucial as it leads to genuine repentance, which is the heart of the gospel message.Practical Application: A Prayer for RestorationIn a heartfelt moment, Wright leads a prayer for those seeking to restore their relationship with Christ. He invites listeners to express their need for Jesus, acknowledging that it is only through Him that we can confidently approach God's judgment. This practical application serves as a reminder that we are never too far gone to seek forgiveness and redemption. Conclusion and Key Takeaways:In conclusion, TS Wright's message is a powerful reminder of the grace that Jesus offers as our mediator. By embracing Him, we can approach God with confidence, knowing that our sins are forgiven and that we have a path to eternal life. Key takeaways include:1. This is the fourth and final episode in which Albert Evans and I go in search of the 1934 smash-hit musical The Great Waltz, one of the longest-running shows of the 1930s. The goal of this occasional series of podcasts, In Search of Lost Broadway, is to try to rediscover big hit Broadway musicals from the past, which today are almost entirely unknown to us and forgotten. This week, we explore several high-profile reincarnations of The Great Waltz in the 1960s and 70s, all of which stem from a heavily revised version, with new lyrics by the team Robert Wright and George Forrest, that was first produced by impresario Irwin Lester at his Los Angeles Civic Light Opera company in 1949 and then was revived and revised in 1953 and 1965. The highly acclaimed 1965 version was announced several times for Broadway but never materialized there. It did, however, open in London in 1970, where it became a major hit, running more than 600 performances. Then, in 1972, in the wake of the massive success of The Sound of Music film, The Great Waltz became a major motion picture starring Horst Buchholz and Mary Costa, again with new lyrics by Wright & Forrest. Finally, we discuss the Walt Disney TV-movie version of the Johann Strauss story, titled The Waltz King, which aired on The Wonderful World of Disney in 1963. This week on The Luke Branquinho Show, Luke sits down with Stetson Wright following one of the most talked-about comeback seasons in professional rodeo. After a serious injury, Wright returned to the sport and captured two gold buckles at the 2025 National Finals Rodeo, winning the PRCA Bull Riding World Championship and the PRCA All-Around World Championship. His momentum has continued into 2026 with standout performances at Denver and Fort Worth, reaffirming his place at the top of the sport. The season was made even more historic alongside his family. Statler Wright claimed his first gold buckle as Saddle Bronc Riding World Champion, Ryder Wright finished as Reserve World Champion, and the brothers went 1-2-3 in the final Saddle Bronc world standings. One moment at the NFR became one of the most debated calls of the year. In Round 6 of saddle bronc riding, Wright appeared to complete a clean ride, only for it to be ruled a no-score on a controversial mark-out call. Despite instant replay, the decision stood and sparked widespread debate across the rodeo world. ━━━━━━━━━━ ★

Sanctification Explained: Sanctification is the ongoing process of becoming more like God, involving a change in one's nature, thoughts, and desires over time, as individuals strive to live in accordance with their covenants. The Role of Grace: Grace is central to understanding both justification and sanctification. It emphasizes that salvation is a gift from God, not solely based on individual works, and that individuals can have confidence in their justified state. Addressing Perfectionism: Many Latter-day Saints struggle with perfectionism, often feeling unworthy despite understanding the doctrine. The conversation highlights the importance of recognizing one’s worth as inherent and not solely based on actions. Mental Health Considerations: The discussion touches on the intersection of mental health and religious beliefs, particularly regarding OCD and scrupulosity, emphasizing the need for compassion and understanding in addressing these issues. Leadership Applications Fostering a Culture of Grace: Leaders can create an environment where members feel secure in their justified state, encouraging them to engage in the gospel without the burden of shame or guilt. Understanding Individual Needs: By recognizing that unmet needs may drive certain behaviors, leaders can approach members with empathy, focusing on support rather than judgment. Promoting Continuous Growth: Leaders should emphasize the importance of striving for sanctification, framing commandments and ordinances as opportunities for growth rather than as mere obligations, thus inspiring members to engage more fully in their spiritual journeys. 1/28/26 - When St. Dominic died in 1221, the future of the newly founded Dominican Order was far from secure—but the man elected to succeed him, Blessed Jordan of Saxony, would prove decisive in shaping its destiny. We'll examine how Jordan, a brilliant Paris-trained theologian and gifted preacher, preserved Dominic's original vision while leading the Order through unprecedented growth, expanding Dominican houses across France, Italy, Germany, and beyond. Renowned for his warmth, clarity, and personal holiness, Jordan drew countless vocations—including future saints—by uniting doctrinal precision with genuine pastoral charity, especially among university students. Through his letters, preaching missions, and careful formation of friars, he defended religious discipline against laxity, resisted worldly pressures, and ensured that truth, study, and preaching remained at the heart of Dominican life. His leadership demonstrates that lasting renewal in the Church comes not from novelty or compromise, but from fidelity to tradition, courage in leadership, and holiness lived publicly and persuasively.

Dr. Dunne also discusses his latest book, 'The Mountain Shall Drip Sweet Wine: A Biblical Theology of Alcohol,' which explores the nuanced themes of alcohol in the Bible and its implications for modern believers.Dr. John Anthony Dunne earned his PhD in NT at the University of St Andrews (in Scotland) under the supervision of Prof. N. Playing favorites may feel like a phase we outgrow, but James confronts how deeply partiality still shapes our lives—and our faith. In James 2:1–13, we are warned that favoritism based on status, appearance, wealth, or ideology is incompatible with faith in Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. This teaching by Pastor Aaron McRae exposes how easily we absorb the world's habits of ranking, judging, and dividing others, often without realizing it. James reminds us that true faith is not merely held—it is lived. Faith in Jesus must look like Jesus, expressed through mercy, humility, and love for neighbor without exception.Through Scripture, cultural insight, and practical application, this message calls believers to examine their hearts, reject unconscious bias, and live under the “royal law” of love. Ultimately, James leaves us with a defining vision for Christian living: mercy triumphs over judgment.James Study Journal – Weekly Scripture readings, reflection prompts, and space to apply the teaching personally or with a group - https://hillsidechurches.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/James2026_Journal_FINAL.pdf Discussion Guide – Designed for small groups, coffee groups, or families to process the message together - https://hillsidechurches.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/Discussion-Guide-1.18.26.pdf Resources & Scripture ReferencesPrimary Text: James 2:1–13Supporting Scripture-Leviticus 19:15, 18-Genesis 1:27-Galatians 3:26–28-John 1:14-John 15:12–13-Exodus 33:18–19-Ephesians 3:17–19Referenced Authors-Douglas Moo, James-Scot McKnight, The Letter of James-N.T. On January 22, the Detroit Lions Podcast paused to salute Dan Skipper. The veteran offensive lineman hung up his cleats today. A remote episode, a rough travel day, and a clear purpose. Honor a singular NFL story. Dan Skipper Calls It a Career Skipper retires after battling health problems. Back issues. Knee issues. Foot issues. He fought through all of it and kept showing up for the Detroit Lions. His transaction log tells the tale. Sixty-six official NFL transactions. Fifty-seven with the Lions since 2019. He had a brief stint in Houston and an earlier dalliance with the Cowboys, but Detroit was home. He was the tallest player in the NFL at a legit 6-9 and around 330. Not quite athletic enough to lock down tackle. Too upright to be a full-time guard. Yet he stayed valuable. Practice squad, elevations, special teams, spot duty. He bridged some bad Lions teams to the best Lions teams in recent memory. He maximized his career and never lost the room. Sixth Lineman, Third Tight End, Fan Favorite Skipper carved out a niche as the sixth lineman and extra tackle. In 2025, he logged 228 offensive snaps. Eighty of those came as a third tight end in heavy packages. The Lions led the NFL in using a sixth lineman in three of the last four seasons, and Skipper was almost always that piece. He was eligible. They even threw him the ball. It worked. The appeal went beyond snaps. Training camp showed the person. A giant who signed for kids. Jovial and patient. His own kids ran around and tackled dad after practice. Fans noticed. Teammates noticed. That energy made him a Detroit Lions favorite. The 2017 Wright Game Punt Moment The origin story includes the 2017 Wright game in Saint Pete. Practice moved outside on a grass field. Skipper dominated drills that day. Coaches set a challenge to juice the session. The other side picked a player to field a punt. If he caught it clean, practice ended and the offense won. They chose Skipper. The punt was not easy. He secured it. Practice over. Offense got the win. It was a perfect snapshot of focus under pressure and why people gravitated to him. What Comes Next Skipper retires for medical reasons and moves straight into coaching. He will coach tight ends and the offensive line at the Wright game this week. That fits his path. Detroit Lions fans will miss him at camp, but his influence carries on. Sixty-six moves. One city that kept calling. A career that mattered. #detroitlions #lions #detroitlionspodcast #danskipper #nfltransactions #sixthlineman #extratackle #thirdtightend #fieldedapunt #2017wrightgame #specialteams #backissue #kneeissue #footissues #cowboys #houston Learn more about your ad choices. Her last day? December 4, 2025, when Governor Brian Kemp accepted her resignation. McVay’s career began in 1973, digging into title research at Sen. Sam Nunn’s old law firm. From there, she wore countless hats: prosecutor, trial attorney, ethics commission director, private practice owner, and eventually, Cherokee County’s first female probate judge. Oh, and she also became the first woman to conduct a jury trial in the county. Her time as probate judge (1997–2008) was transformative. She modernized the office, introduced mediation to resolve family disputes, and even handpicked her successor, Keith Wood, who’s still serving today. After stepping down as probate judge, McVay wasn’t done. She served as a senior judge for Georgia’s Probate Courts, taking on cases across the state—sometimes for years at a time. One particularly messy case involved an estate with no will, feuding heirs, and years of unresolved disputes. Now retired, McVay has traded courtrooms for family time and volunteering at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, where she moved in 2020. “It’s been a good run,” she said, “but I’m enjoying this new chapter.” STORY 2: New Kilwin's store opens at The Mill on Etowah in Canton Canton just got a little sweeter—Kilwin’s is now open at The Mill on Etowah, serving up chocolate, fudge, and over 30 flavors of ice cream. The shop, which opened Dec. 18, sits next to Rock N Roll Sushi and shares a building with Campania. Franchisee Mona Rathore, who also owns the downtown Woodstock location, said Canton was the perfect spot. “We wanted to create a family-friendly space where people could enjoy our sweets. The Mill felt like the heart of the community—it just made sense.” Kilwin’s menu is a sugar lover’s dream: hand-dipped caramel apples (made fresh in-store), creamy fudge, specialty chocolates, and, of course, their famous ice cream. So far, the response has been incredible. “We love seeing families stop by after dinner,” Rathore said. “Even though we’re a franchise, we feel like a local business. We live, shop, and eat here—it’s home.” Kilwin’s Canton is open daily from noon to 8 p.m., with extended hours coming this summer. Online ordering and delivery through DoorDash and Uber Eats are on the way, too. STORY 3: Cherokee County school board member won’t seek reelection  Cherokee County School Board Member Susan Padgett-Harrison is calling it a career. After decades in education and public service, she’s announced she’ll retire at the end of the year and won’t seek another term. Padgett-Harrison’s career spans 29 years as a teacher, principal, and district leader before joining the board in 2023. During her tenure, CCSD’s state “report card” score hit a record 87, and the district climbed from 21st to 8th in state rankings. She’s proud of the progress: lower debt, expanded career programs, and rising AP scores. Three other board seats (Districts 3, 4, and 5) are also up for grabs this year, with elections set for May 19 and Nov. 3. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info.    We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 3 STORY 4: Creekview wins back-to-back duals state titles Creekview did it again—back-to-back Class AAAAA duals state champs. And this one? It was a nail-biter. The Grizzlies edged out South Effingham 36-35 in the final, capping off a perfect 4-0 run at Legacy Arena in Douglasville. Wins over Habersham Central, Villa Rica, and Dunwoody set the stage, but the finale? That was something else. Down 35-6 with five matches left, Creekview pulled off the unthinkable: five straight pins. Aaron Campbell, Pierce Marsh, Weston Wilkie, Logan Pritchett, and Costen Wright stepped up, with Wright sealing the deal at 175 pounds. Even a loss at 132 pounds by Bo Richardson turned out to be crucial, saving a team point that made the difference. South Effingham was no pushover—they’d dominated all tournament long, just like Creekview. But the Grizzlies weren’t about to let this one slip. With the traditional tournament still ahead, Creekview’s not done yet. BRAVES: Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones are headed to Cooperstown, two center fielders who dominated their eras with a mix of power, speed, and jaw-dropping defense. Born just a day apart in April 1977, they’ll now share the stage at the Hall of Fame induction on July 26. Beltrán, in his fourth year on the ballot, finally crossed the 75% threshold, earning 84.2% of the vote. Jones, in his ninth year, got 78.4%. Both had to climb uphill—Beltrán’s path clouded by the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal, Jones’ by a slow start in Hall voting (just 7.3% in 2018). Beltrán, a nine-time All-Star, hit .279 with 435 homers and 1,587 RBIs over 20 seasons. He was a postseason monster, batting .307 with 16 homers in 65 playoff games. “The Mets are a big part of my identity,” he said, though his career spanned stints with Kansas City, Houston, St. Louis, and others. Jones, meanwhile, was a defensive wizard, winning 10 Gold Gloves and smashing 434 homers. He’s now the sixth Braves legend from their 1990s dynasty to make the Hall, joining Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Chipper, and McGriff. STORY 5: Winter storm watch issued for Cherokee County this weekend  Brace yourselves, north Georgia—winter’s about to get messy. The National Weather Service says a storm is rolling in this weekend, and Cherokee County is under a winter storm watch from 1 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday. South of Cherokee? No watch, but don’t get too comfortable. Here’s the deal: expect freezing rain, sleet, and maybe some snow. Saturday starts with rain, but by nightfall, temps drop to 27, and things get icy—literally. Sunday? More freezing rain, highs around 34, and a low of 17. Power outages? Likely. Roads? Treacherous. If you must travel, pack a winter kit—blankets, water, flashlight, the works. And don’t forget to protect your pets, plants, and pipes. Need shelter? MUST Ministries’ warming center on Bells Ferry Road opens Saturday, serving dinner at 5 p.m. Stay safe, stay warm, and keep an eye on updates. Join us as we explore the profound teachings found in Matthew 22:35-38 and Deuteronomy 6:4-5, shedding light on what it truly means to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind.Main Content:Section 1: The Greatest CommandmentIn Matthew 22:35-38, an expert in the law tests Jesus by asking which commandment is the greatest. Jesus responds emphatically, stating that we should love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, and mind. This powerful commandment sets the foundation for our relationship with God. It emphasizes that our primary duty is to love God in every aspect of our lives.Section 2: The Call to LoveThis call to love is echoed in Deuteronomy 6:4-5, where it states, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength." Here, we learn that loving God is not just a suggestion but a command that requires our utmost devotion and strength.Section 3: Seeking God FirstMatthew 6:33 further emphasizes the importance of prioritizing our relationship with God: "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you." By seeking God first, we align our lives with His purpose, allowing everything else to fall into place. This pursuit of God should be our highest priority.Section 4: Obedience and DesireIn 1 John 5:1-3, we understand that love for God is demonstrated through obedience to His commandments. True love for God is not just about following rules but having a genuine desire to obey Him. The struggle of "white knuckling" through obedience highlights that without a heartfelt desire, our actions may become mere obligations.Section 5: The Role of the Holy SpiritThe transformation that occurs when we genuinely seek to love and obey God is empowered by the Holy Spirit. Revelation 3:18-21 reminds us that when we are corrected and rebuked by God, it is out of love. This leads to repentance and a renewed zeal to do His will. When we feel that desire to follow God earnestly, we can be assured that the Holy Spirit is guiding us.Key TakeawaysIn our journey to understand God's love, we find that loving Him wholeheartedly is our greatest commandment. This love compels us to seek Him first, obey His commandments, and be open to the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives. By prioritizing our relationship with God, we not only experience His love but also become instruments of His will in the world. Let us surrender to God, allowing Him to reign over our hearts and lead us in His love.Tags: God's Love, Greatest Commandment, Spiritual Growth, Matthew 22, Deuteronomy 6, Holy Spirit, Obedience to God, Faith, Christian Living, Seeking God First

We have paper money today because it functioned as an IOU, certifying that the holder could redeem it for an equivalent amount of physical gold or silver from the bank's vault. That’s where the English pound got its name as it matched a specific weight of gold (or silver). This was the gold standard, and this is how banks operated for centuries. But it was largely abandoned after World War I, when governments prevented the withdrawal of gold by suspending the convertibility of their paper money into gold to conserve national gold reserves for purchasing vital war supplies and to allow central banks to print money for financing massive military expenditures. Governments abandoned linking their money to anything at all, giving central banks full control over the money supply. Printing money has led to inflation, national debt, and financial instability, which ultimately fueled the creation of cryptocurrency like Bitcoin as a decentralized, mathematically-scarce alternative. What if things hadn’t happened this way? What if the gold standard survived the Great War? Today’s guest, Saifedean Ammous , imagines this scenario in his new book The Gold Standard: An Alternate Economic History of the 20th Century.” The story begins with a fictional divergence in 1911: French aviation pioneer Louis Blériot partners with the Wright brothers to create the Blériot Transport Corporation (BTC), an airplane-based, peer-to-peer gold-settlement network. This innovative system quickly becomes a secure alternative to central banks. When World War I starts, the BTC offers Europeans a way to export their wealth to neutral countries, escaping central bank war inflation. This triggers a global financial panic in September 1915, bankrupting the world's central banks, abruptly ending the war, and strangling fiat money in its cradle. With the collapse of central banking and the establishment of a free-market, decentralized gold standard, a radically different 20th century unfolds. Hard-money savings become plentiful and cheap, accelerating technological progress, increasing energy production, and fostering a world of appreciating money and declining prices. Without the ability to print money to fund expansive projects, governments become more accountable, transforming into mere service providers whose citizens expect better service at a lower cost. This thought-provoking narrative suggests that the absence of central bank financing could have prevented major 20th-century conflicts, eliminated chronic inflation, and ushered in a "Century of Affluence" based on lower time preference, long-term investment, and voluntary governance.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The two men conquered human flight, but the Wright brothers’ journey to success was never easy. Despite countless failures, ridicule, money woes, and serious injury to one of them, the brothers weren’t stopped by the trials they faced. As Orville Wright observed, “No bird soars in a calm.” The idea, according to biographer David McCullough, means that adversity can “often be exactly what you need to give you a lift higher.” Said McCullough, “Their joy was not getting to the top of the mountain. Their joy was climbing the mountain.” The apostle Peter taught a similar spiritual principle to the persecuted early church. He told them, “Do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you” (1 Peter 4:12). This wasn’t a denial of suffering’s pain. Peter knew that hope in Christ grows our trust in God. This is especially true when we suffer for being a believer in Jesus, as those early Christians did. Peter wrote to them, “Rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed” (v. 13). He went on, “If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you” (v. 14). As the Wright Brothers’ character was hailed by their biographer, may others see God’s loving character at work in us. He uses our adversity to raise us to new heights.

The message centers on the church in Ephesus, highlighting its strengths and weaknesses. While the church is commended for its perseverance and rejection of false teachings, it is admonished for abandoning its first love—Jesus. Wright emphasizes the importance of maintaining a personal relationship with Christ amidst the challenges of ministry and societal pressures. He warns that neglecting this relationship could lead to losing one's spiritual light and connection to God.TS Wright elaborates on the significance of the seven churches as representative of different church ages and the timeless messages they convey. He encourages listeners to reflect on their own faith journeys, ensuring that their actions are rooted in love for Jesus rather than mere works. The episode concludes with a prayer for listeners to reconnect with their first love and to be empowered by the Holy Spirit in their daily lives.Takeaways"You have abandoned your first love.""Jesus is the only one that can do this.""Don't let the work of doing things for Jesus... make you forget Him.""He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.""You need to repent and perform the deeds you did at first.""Jesus is acknowledging that he understands all of this and he sees it.""The seven lampstands represent the seven churches.""We can eat from the tree of life because we've been saved.""This church is for the most part doing everything that they're supposed to do but they're not connecting to Jesus the way they're supposed to.""He wants to enjoy that with you too."

In late 1916, while treating a group of patients at his psychiatric clinic at the University of Vienna, Dr. Constantin von Economo began noticing the appearance of strange symptoms that he could not account for. At the same time, in France, Rene Cruchet began noticing similarly strange and unexpected symptoms in his patients. Though the two men had never met and knew nothing of one another's patients, they would come to learn they were both witnessing the emergence of a new mysterious disease that would soon affect millions of people around the world. The illnesses documented by von Economo and Cruchet would eventually come to be know as encephalitis lethargica, or sleeping sickness, a strange condition that caused profound lethargy, hypersomnia, and a wide range of other frightening symptoms. Between 1919 and the early 1930s, millions of people all around the world contracted the illness, with nearly half of all cases resulting in death, and many more suffering long-term effects; yet a cause of the illness has never been established and the terrifying epidemic appears to have faded from memory not long after the disease itself ostensibly disappeared. ReferencesBrook, Harry Ellington. 1921.
