This week on the 'Cut to the Race' podcast - Oli, Dan, Matt and Callum sat down to discuss the chaotic Azerbaijan Grand Prix, as well as covering key talking points from Monaco and this weeks news. Spa also suffered devastating flooding this week, and the panel assess the damage caused, and what will have to be replaced. As talk turned to Azerbaijan the panel discussed the major talking points, from Bottas' lack of pace (as Dan tried desperately to defend his beloved driver) to another pole position from Charles Leclerc.Of course talk was mainly focussed on the issues with the Pirelli tyres, causing Max Verstappen to lose a certain win, and Lance Stroll to tumble out of the points. Hamilton's lock-up made Oli cry, and the panel gave their race ratings and drivers of the day. This week on the 'Cut to the Race' podcast - Oli, Dan, Matt and Callum sat down to discuss, Imola, Portimao and the news we've missed over the past few weeks. The panel discuss the Russell/Bottas incident that got everyone talking, and each draw their own conclusions about who was to blame, before moving on to cover the other talking points from the weekend and crediting Lewis Hamilton's incredible comeback drive. The news over the past fortnight includes F1 heading to Miami, Suzuka extending its contract, Canada being replaced with Turkey, and the news of sprint races. The panel unanimously agreed Suzuka was one of the best circuits on the calendar, but the Turkey/Canada swap caused some discussion, as did the Miami Grand Prix set for 2022 and beyond.Sprint races also divided the panel as some love the idea, and some didn't, but all were in agreement it's nice to see F1 trying something new! As discussion turned to Portimao the panel all decided to gang up on Dan and laid into Bottas' failed ability to turn a strong pole position into a race win. A track limits debate soon started, and all the panel agreed the actions of car #9 were unacceptable from a Formula 1 driver.Drivers of the day were decided and we now look ahead to the Spanish Grand Prix this coming weekend. In AD 9, Wang Mang, once the powerful prime minister of the Western Han court, overthrew the dynasty and declared himself ruler. The reign of this ambitious but conniving reformer is the interlude between the Western and Eastern Han dynasties — but that he could become emperor in the first place was due to the power vacuum left by a previous emperor. Ai of Han had no children (we assume), and though his reign was rocky, he has achieved immortality in modern China due to his devotion to a male lover.Read the article by Alex Colville: https://supchina.com/2021/04/19/chinas-gay-emperor-known-for-his-cut-sleeve/Narrated by Kaiser Kuo.

In the latest episode of the 'Cut to the Race' podcast, Oli was joined by Matt, Dan and newly appointed writer for the nerds, Alex Mclachlan, for an unfiltered reaction and panel discussion to a thrilling season opener in Bahrain. To kick things off, the panel had a recap of the build up to the new F1 season, discussing their thoughts on new driver line-ups and testing. The nerds discussed which of the three rookies they were most (and least) looking forward to seeing take to the track. Following this, the nerds shared their thoughts on what they all agreed was a thrilling qualifying and picked out their stand-out moments. Tsunoda's impressively quick P2 lap in in Q1 was unsurprisingly mentioned whilst Ferrari's surprise 1-2 in Q2 was a highlight of Matt's.Moving onto the race reaction, the panel decided to work their way up through the constructors championship to discuss the performance of each team. Kicking things off with Haas. The nerds all agreed that Haas' performance, and that of car number nine, was certainly one to forget. Alex mentioned how he feels Haas are already suffering from putting two rookie drivers in their seats and wonders if number nine in particular, can even handle racing an F1 car on the limit. As the panel's discussion climbed up the leaderboard, to Matt's dismay there was no avoiding the discussion around Sebastian Vettel's dismal debut for Aston Martin. Even as a Seb fan, Matt admitted that he was running out of excuses for the costly mistakes the German makes out on track.Interestingly, the nerds also discussed how underwhelmed they were about Daniel Ricciardo's first race for McLaren, with a general feeling that he hasn't fully settled into the car. Dan's opinion was that once Ricciardo has had enough time to settle in, he'll be able to be more aggressive in the car and thinks McLaren could do very well this year with their driver line-up. The podcast reached it's climax when the nerds began to discuss the fight at the top. An interesting debate was raised around track limits following Max Verstappen having to concede his lead to race winner Lewis Hamilton after the stewards deemed his move illegal.Whilst all nerds agreed that the decision to penalise Vertsappen was correct, Matt argued that Hamilton hadn't been penalised for exceeding those same limits 29 times throughout the race. Oli also suggested that the FIA had been inconsistent with their rules and argued that this had once again let the fans down. This week on the 'Cut to The Race' podcast, Oli, Matt and Emma chat to Lawrence Barretto, Senior Writer at Formula One. Someone who works closely with drivers and teams, getting to chat to people we can only dream of, Lawrence tells us about his career to date including stints at Autosport and Motorsport.com. He discusses how he started his role at Formula One, and what he enjoys most about the many elements of his job. He also explains what is challenging about travelling with the F1 circus. Emma asks him if he has interviewed anyone, a driver or team, who have been particularly difficult, or awkward. The response is juicy, and Lawrence explains that sometimes he has to think on his feet. After watching the interview that Lawrence did with seven time world champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, Emma asks why Lewis gets such a negative response on social media despite hus success, his achievements and his involvement in inclusion and diversity within the sport. The conversation turns to the much anticipated upcoming F1 season Oli asks Lawrence if the calendar is likely to change this year due to the ongoing pandemic and we find out the impact of not having fans at the circuits has had on the sport and Lawrence's job. With the car launches in full swing, Oli asks what team we should be watching this year, as Matt wants to know what driver line up is the strongest, and whether "super teams" are a thing. We discuss what tracks are a "must go to" and what circuits Lawrence would want to see back on the calendar. Matt also asks Lawrence on his thoughts about the CEO of Rich Energy, William Storey, trying to make a return to F1. Is it all hot air or should we have take him seriously? While we discuss this, William Storey tweets the Nerds and ignites the rumour mill again. Finally Emma wants to know about his shoe collection, which is now famous around the paddock, and Matt probes Lawrence on his Instagram bio, where he states he is a "burger connoisseur".Give this a listen for top tips of where to find the best burger joints around the F1 circuits. Mark Ivanir wanted to be an actor since he was five-years-old, but he made several pitstops along the way. First, he served as an Israeli spy who went undercover on a secret mission to rescue Jews out of Ethiopia. Then he took some time off and joined a circus – juggling and performing pantomime on the streets of Paris. Eventually, he returned to his first love and his start in Hollywood couldn't have gone better: One of his first roles was in Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List." Since then, he has worked non-stop, appearing in more than 50 movies and television shows – and has starred alongside Angelina Jolie, Matt Damon and Robert De Niro. His latest role pairs him with yet another A-list star: two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. They make up two of the five astronauts on the first human mission to Mars in a compelling new Netflix series called "Away." The journey is set to keep the astronauts 20 million miles away from their families for three years. Jason Katims, the show's executive producer, said that when the team first met Ivanir, he made everyone fall in love with him on the spot. “He has this humor, he has heart, and he also has this bravado," Katims explained. "It was so great because the show is dealing with big, high stakes issues. Mark has all of that, but he also brings humor to almost everything that he does and everything that he says. He has done everything from great comedic work to really wonderful dramatic work and we were just so excited to have him be part of this.” Ivanir found an unlikely muse for his role as a cocky, know-it-all astronaut with a sense of humor. “Someone I took inspiration from was my contractor,” Ivanir said, laughing. “He has nothing to do with space, but he cracks jokes all the time. That's his default. That's where he goes. He is emotionally armored. The character was written like that from the beginning and then I realized that that's the guy. It's funny, but it's true. No pilots or astronauts, just my contractor.” His previous career as a spy also helped, since he was able to completely embody a new character. And his time doing summersaults in Paris aided his work in the scenes where he's floating in zero-gravity. “We had to try to figure out how to move in space in terms of the speed and your ability to go forty-five degrees or to do a full circle on the wire. Luckily, I have a background as a circus performer so by the second day I was doing all kinds of backflips!” "Away" is a workplace drama set in outer space, but it's also a poignant tale for the historic moment in which we find ourselves. It's a story of flight, of possibility and of hope. The first season of the show debuts on Netflix on September 4th. In this new episode of our podcast, we caught up with Ivanir to talk about the new Netflix series, as well as his previous career as both a circus performer and an Israeli spy. Of all three of those careers, he told us he enjoys acting the most. "In many ways, it gives you an opportunity to do all of these things in a somewhat safe capacity. So, you can be a spy, and then the director says 'Cut!,' and you go and have a snack. It gives you the opportunity to get into so many characters and then leave them and be yourself. It's lovely."

"Chipotle workers claim that food safety practices are at risk at the fast casual restaurant due to managerial procedures that cause workers to ""cut corners."" A total of 47 current and former Chipotle workers from New York City locations came forward about the malpractice in a report to Business Insider. This news follows recent allegations that the company has been violating child labor laws. In the report obtained by Business Insider, workers outlined concerns about the way things are done behind the scenes at Chipotle. It said that many incentives like pay bonuses let other responsibilities like cleanliness audits and food safety fall to the wayside. Workers said in the report that working at Chipotle is ""highly pressurized environment"" with goals that include ""minimizing labor costs."" It was also said that managers are often told in advance when a restaurant will be inspected for cleanliness so they can be prepared. Meanwhile, when an inspection isn't taking place the cleanliness standard is much more laid back. In the past, people have questioned Chipotle's safety standards because of the E. Coli outbreak a couple years back. The chain also has an interesting sick day policy, where there are on call nurses for workers to check if they're actually sick. Chipotle said in a statement to Delish that the company is committed to safe food and a safe work environment and that the pay bonuses actually incentivize workers to be even more precise when following company policies. The full statement can be read below: We are proud of our industry leading food safety practices and we are committed to a culture of food safety in our restaurants where employees are supported and heard. Chipotle’s engaged and hard-working employees are what makes us great, and we encourage our employees to contact us immediately, including through an anonymous 800 number, with any concerns so we can investigate and respond quickly to make things right. We will follow up on every allegation once we have access to the information. Chipotle offers a quarterly bonus for ALL employees, which includes managers and hourly crew members, with up to a month’s worth of pay per year. Following proper food safety procedures is a requirement to achieve this bonus so it actually reinforces our best practices with everyone in the restaurant. Chipotle is committed to creating a safe and engaging work environment for its employees by offering industry-leading benefits such as debt-free degrees, tuition reimbursement up to $5,250 per year, competitive health benefits and quarterly bonuses for all employees."

Digital still means differing things, depending on who you ask. So for us at 'Cut the Cliches', we turned to a man for episode five, who has decades of experience in the field, leading his agency through the era of mobile, through to the customer experience focus which his agency has today. Ben Beath, MD at Loud & Clear helps brands transform internally to become more digitally enabled. Simply put, he's taking legacy infrastructure and making processes streamlined for today's increasingly time-poor workforce. This can, and often does involve automation, as we discuss the impact of Industry 4.0 on how jobs are viewed. Ben has worked with some of Australia's leading brands including AGL and FFA, and our man on the ground Liam Fitzpatrick caught up with Ben in his Melbourne office.
In episode four, 'Cut the Cliches' speaks with Shaik from GameFace.AI about the rise of sports analytics. Host Liam Fitzpatrick catches up with Shaik in Sydney where we discuss the difference between AI and machine learning, how GameFace rebrand is going, how sports teams are increasingly turning to video to support coaching and tactics and what might be next for the use of tech across sporting codes.

Updated (14 October 15:40 GMT) Bit of a milestone, as it's the 100th episode, I guess I should probably share a few thoughts, with you the listener. Dance music was my first love, the first type of music that I took seriously. Prior to that I would have been your typical kid who listened to pop music. We lived in a house where someone always had music on, be it the radio in the kitchen that my mother was listening to or emanating from all the rooms simultaneously upstairs. That all changed in 1988 during what was dubbed "The Second Summer of Love". There was a real air of optimism about. Life was changing and the music we were gravitating towards was reflecting this. It all felt new and exciting as a bona fide revolution in youth culture was taking place. It was rebellious and as a pre-pubescent I wanted a part of the action. The Cul-de-sac we lived in formed a natural congregation point for the kids in my neighbourhood and someone always had a stereo on as we played in "the square" as it was referred to. I decided to take up the mantle one afternoon and got my first taste of playing music selector to an audience. Naturally I was hooked. I was initially drawn to the sample based, 'Cut 'n' Paste' style of acts like Bomb The Bass, S'Express and Coldcut and anything I could hear via radio on Simon Young's Dance Show on 2FM and later Pete Tong's Essential selection on BBC Radio 1. I'd tape the shows and listen to them all week trying to track down the records I was hearing. This of course was pre-internet so what followed was a lot of humming in record shops to bemused staff. We had one of those old style record players in our house that could go down to 16 rpm and up to 78 rpm, on top of the usual 33 and 45 and my first foray into concocting mixes was making pause button tapes, messing about with the speeds of the various records in my collection and whatever else we had around the house. Which included my sister's Madonna, Janet Jackson and Gloria Estefan LP's along with a cache of vinyl, which my dad won playing poker, I was later informed. The collection he acquired included a lot of music that was alien to me at the time such as The Band and Pretty Purdie who had a song called 'Funky Donkey' that I developed a fondness for solely because of how absurd a song title it was. I investigated each record in the haul in the same manner that I still do today and put to one side the one's that stood out for me adding them to my stock. I also learned something valuable that day and that was; that, sometimes, it's worth going off the beaten track to discover music for yourself, as it can be extremely rewarding. In 1992 I started working part time, after school, saved up and got my first set of proper turntables. This was back in a time when Ireland's licensing laws were a bit lax and I started sneaking into nightclubs. This opened me up to a whole other world of music and I forged friendships that still hold strong to this day. I was well and truly bitten by the bug and decided that DJ'ng was the profession for me and by 1995 I was gigging regularly and making a living from something that started out as a passion. It's a passion that has never waned. Music still excites me as much now as it did then and I enjoy seeking out and listening to as much new music as I can. Everyday I hear something that blows my mind. So to the mix itself. I decided to take a look back at the history of dance music from the first nightclubs in Paris in the 1950's, to the Sound System culture of Jamaica in the 60's, on to the Discotheques and Block Parties of New York in the 70's, the House music of Chicago, Techno in Detroit, the Balearic Beat of Ibiza, the UK Rave scene in the 80's and beyond to what is now a global phenomenon. It's been fascinating for me to see how dance music evolved from disco to house to techno to drum n bass and mutated into 100's of sub genres and come full circle. History shows us how it's all cyclical and connected like one big organism. Dance music has had many names but only one purpose and that's to get you moving. Dancing is an inherent part of our DNA. It's primal, it unites and truly breaks down barriers. Nightclubs can be magical places transporting us to another dimension, away from the mundane and allows us forget about our troubles, even if only for a night. For this mix I've selected some of my four to the floor favourites. Cramming in as much as I could. There's nods here to seminal tracks and key figures in the evolution of it all. I've had many memorable moments to all these songs, they remind me of different points, places and people. They're tracks that will always hold a special place in my heart for a variety of reasons and in most cases are the best examples, for me, of the many flavours of club music. Thank you as always for lending me your ears, it's greatly appreciated. Today's Guest: Scott Cooper, director, Crazy Heart Order 'Crazy Heart' [Blu-ray] directed by Scott Cooper, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! (2009) When a movie director surrounds himself with talent, it makes the first day of shooting a lot more pleasant. So imagine being director Scott Cooper when principal photography began on his new film, Crazy Heart. His top line featured not one but three stars: Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Robert Duvall. And it left the writer of the film feeling pretty confident, too—and that was also Cooper. It probably didn’t hurt that two of his stars, Mr. Duvall and Mr. Bridges, are also producers of Crazy Heart. SCOTT COOPER audio excerpt: "Jeff Bridges is a better person than he is an actor, and that's saying a lot... In between 'Action!' and 'Cut!', it's revelatory what he can do. He's so facile...so sublime in the picture. He spoiled me. It's an embarrassment of riches." So how did this serio-comic story about a broken-down country music singer—that would be Bridges—turn out? If you can’t wait for the movie to open on Wednesday, December 16, let’s see what the director can tell us. Bluegrass has always been a mix of musical inspirations. Perhaps that's why young bands, like Old Salt Union, continue to embrace the genre. The members of the quintet (based in Illinois, near St. Louis, Missouri) come from a variety of backgrounds " classical, alternative, jazz " and they find themselves playing an updated form of the music Bill Monroe made famous in the mid-20th century. In January of 2016, Old Salt Union came by the studio and played a few songs from their EP, 'Cut and Run' for Folk Alley at the 30A Songwriters Festival.
