Let's get it done!!This week we are super excited to have Adam Skolnick on the show. Adam is a journalist and author, and most recently finished his second book as ghostwriter with David Goggins on his newest release “Never Finished” (which just came out December 6). If you do not know David, he is a former Navy Seal and ultra-successful, ultra-endurance runner and athlete. Both books are a guided master's course on mindset, mental toughness, and mental prep. Many of you might also know Adam as co-host of the “Roll-On” series on the Rich Roll podcast. In this episode Adam shares his story on finding his way as a writer and the struggles he faced along the way. Great insights into the writing process and surviving as a writer. We also look in depth at working with David Goggins, how they created the space for this second book, and what it looks like for a writer to “get out of the way” in telling a story. Inspiring, informative, and a lot of fun. We know you will really enjoy this episode. Thank you, Adam, for being with us!!  Happy December wherever you are and whoever you are with. We wish you the very best and most joyous of times. It was an absolute honor and a blast to host this convo with world-class entertainer, mentalist/mind reader, and Emmy winner, Oz Pearlman. When Oz isn't blowing the minds of audiences around the world, he is an avid marathon and ultra-marathon runner, having completed such grueling races as the Badwater 135 Miler, Hawaii Ironman World Championships, Western States 100, and Spartathlon. Oz ran a 2:29 in the 50th NYC Marathon, placing 33rd overall, and holds a 2:23 Marathon PR! On 4/8/2022, Oz is trying to break the record for most miles ever run in a day around Central Park since it was founded in 1858. This means running over 100 miles nonstop from 6am to 1am, over and over around one of the most iconic loops on the planet. He is running in support of the Save the Children Ukraine Relief Fund (you can donate here). Oz matched the first $10K donated and has a goal of raising $100K! For NYC locals and run clubs, home base will be at Engineers Gate, 90th & 5th, come on out and share some miles for a great cause! We discuss: running with purpose, the NYC Marathon, Sparthalon, Badwater 135, his training approach for the Central Park FKT record attempt, his 'why', nutrition, his upcoming appearance on the Rich Roll Podcast, Adam Skolnick, David Goggins, power couple Mike Halovatch and Kate Pallardy, the Keys 100, and much more. My favorite part was getting my mind read at the end of the episode... and having it be FULLY blown! I'm rooting hard for Oz to get it DONE and raise that $100K! I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did! If you enjoy the episode, it would mean the world to me if you would rate the podcast or write a review and share feedback wherever you get your podcast groove on. Welcome to Episode 100 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! We did it! It's hard to believe that we've reached 100 episodes of the show, yet here we are. We have a very special show this week to commemorate hitting the century mark. We will take a walk down memory lane over the almost 2-year history of the show. If that wasn't enough, we are joined on the show this week by reigning ÖTILLÖ Mixed Team World Champions and World Record holders Desirée Andersson and Victor Dahl, A.K.A. Team Envol HEAD Swimming. There are no words to adequately express our gratitude for you listening to our super niche show...but that won't stop us from trying. “What Does Your Show Do?”Rich Roll was asked this question when he was visiting Minneapolis to cover the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd by some community activists. He mentioned that he wrestled with how to answer the question because it was so direct and in the moment. Hearing that struck us by how easy a question that is for us to answer. What does our show do? We get people super stoked on Swimrun! Our Swimrun/Podcast JourneyIt's safe to say that when we started this show in January of 2020 that we did not have many expectations. We knew that we were super stoked on Swimrun and that no one we knew had heard about the sport...except from us. Given our backgrounds in digital marketing and brand building (and crucially, Chipper's previous podcast experience), we thought that we could put out a good show, help people discover and de-mystify Swimrun, have some fun writing the first Swimrun Meme account, and we would see what happened. Our plan was to at least chronicle our Swimrun journey through March of 2020. Our first few guests were friends that gave us the “why not” answer with a chuckle when we asked them to come on. The Swimrun Monks and Team Envol Baywatch were awesome enough to answer our DMs and come on the show in the early months. Our first “get” of a guest was Christofer Sundberg, Co-Founder of Ark Sports. While this interview probably also falls into the “why not” reasoning for coming on, Ark Sports will always have a special place in our hearts for saying yes. When we got to Catalina for the ÖTILLÖ World Series race we began to realize that we may have started something when some “fans” came up to us on the ferry to show us their pull buoys. (Shoutout Colleen, Libby, and Tori!) The weekend just got wilder and wilder and that didn't even take into account the race! Oh, and Chipper got quoted in a New York Times article about ÖTILLÖ Catalina. (Shoutout to our brother and forever favorite journalist, Adam Skolnick!)We were definitely riding high after Catalina and had pretty much committed to keep doing the show and then BAM! Planet Earth got hit with a once in a generation pandemic. We weren't sure what we were going to do at first but quickly decided that we were going to try to keep the “stoke level” high and just keep following our curiosity to learn more about the sport and the amazing people that are a part of it. Along the way, we started the Gear Talk show with Annie and Brooke from the Swimrun Labs (whom we love) so we could geek out about all things gear and help answer all the questions that we had started getting from folks getting into the sport, we launched a YouTube channel to share more info about Swimrun, and our Meme account found new levels of ridiculousness. Well, fast forward to now, it's safe to say that the show is a “thing.” We have tried to foster community wherever we could, we've made friends from all over the world, we've gotten better at swimming and running, and our love for the Swimrun community keeps blossoming. So. Many. People. To. Thank. Now for the longest shoutout segment in the history of the show.First, no walk down the LTBz memory lane would even be possible without the seemingly undying support of our respective wives, Kristen and Susan. Their encouragement/acquiescence on our Swimrun journey has been amazing and we are truly thankful for their support.   The support that we have gotten from races and brands including ÖTILLÖ, Ödyssey Swimrun, Ark Sports, Frank Paddle, Precision Hydration and so many others has been amazing. It's inspiring to us to see so many companies trying to grow the sport in the right way.A giant thank you to all the show guests that agreed to come on the podcast. Thank you for your enthusiasm, candor, and perspective. A special thank you to our LTBz correspondents in the field for just agreeing to do that. We know it was super random.Last, but definitely not least, we want to thank all our listeners and fans for tuning in. We're constantly amazed that people actually listen and find the information useful. Obviously, that's what we are going for but it's still surreal to us that we've had over 61,000 downloads at the time of recording and the pace is only speeding up. Thank you all so much for the encouragement, for giving us feedback on how to make the show better, and for fueling us to keep trying to put together good content for you. Our Swimrun journey continues and we can't wait to share it with all of you!Interview with Desirée and VictorWe are honored to have Desirée Andersson and Victor Dahl join us on the podcast for this special episode and we couldn't think of a better team to have on. Not only do they win everything they touch, they are two of the nicest and most welcoming ambassadors of the sport. We chatted with them about how they got paired up (thank you Nicolas Remirez,) how they trained and raced to get dialed in for the World Championship, we talked about their record breaking performance in this year's race, and what the future holds for Team Envol HEAD Swimming. They are great and we think that you'll enjoy this conversation. That's it for this week's show. If you are enjoying the Löw Tide Böyz, be sure to subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast player and leave us a five-star review. Roll On: Case Studies In Mental Fortitude

Success in all forms demands mental fortitude—a capacity honed through consistently placing yourself beyond comfortable confines. When practiced with daily rigor, an increasingly sturdy mindset becomes a superpower—and the foundation for the purpose-driven life you aspire to inhabit.Welcome to another edition of ‘Roll On', wherein myself and master of pen, keyboard and dictaphone Adam Skolnick explore the concept of mental fortitude in contexts athletic and political through the lives of two individuals, James Lawrence (aka the ‘Iron Cowboy') and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.Beyond RRP hype-man duties, Adam Skolnick is an activist and journalist best known as David Goggins' Can't Hurt Me, co-author. He writes about adventure sports, environmental issues, and civil rights for The New York Times, Outside, ESPN, BBC, and Men's Health. He is the author of One Breath and is currently awash in his umpteenth draft of an untitled novel—slowly losing his mind in the process. This episode unfurls in a fashion unique. The balance of today's discussion focuses on James Lawrence—the undisputed king of mental fortitude wrought in physical form—and his mind-bending completion of 101 iron-distance triathlons in 100 days.In addition, we cover a few notable stories, including The Woman Who Fell 2 Miles To Earth, The Great Lakes Jumper and The Great Pacific Race. We also discuss the recent Supreme Court decision backing payments to NCAA student-athletes, wherein I go on a tear against the college-industrial complex. It is here that we depart from standard Roll On protocol and instead segue into my conversation with a man notable for a very different kind of mental fortitude, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey. The most accomplished runner currently holding elected office (he's a 2:16 marathoner!), it's an exploration of the demands, discipline and disposition required to lead a fractured city through the treacherous terrain of social upheaval in the wake of George Floyd's murder. To read more click here. You can also watch our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.Final Thought: this episode marks the one-year anniversary of ‘Roll On' (and on-air bromance with Adam Skolnick). What started as an experimental but intentional response to the many historic moments that greeted us in 2020 has turned into an important RRP mainstay—and a success due in no small part to the incredible work that Adam has and continues to bring to the series. So thank you Adam. #PodcastersForJustice Award-winning documentarian, Mimi deGruy, joined me and author Adam Skolnick for a deep dive into the genesis of her documentary exploring the legacy and environmental activism of her late husband, trailblazing ocean filmmaker Mike deGruy. “When Mike died, I felt like he left in mid-conversation, and I knew that he had so much more to say,” – Mimi deGruy Mike deGruy was a lauded filmmaker, biologist, and activist, who pushed the boundaries of cinematography and diving technology to explore never-before-seen ocean life and share it with the world. "In 2012, deGruy died tragically at age 60 in a helicopter crash in Australia while filming for [Academy Award® winning] director James Cameron." – KCRW The documentary, “Diving Deep: The Life and Times of Mike deGruy” was crowd-funded, directed, produced, and written by Mimi, Mike’s widow and filmmaking partner. "Told through the eyes of his wife ... the film celebrates [Mike’s] life, career, and what he passionately believed: we are destroying the ocean before we even know what’s there." The Hollywood Reporter said about the film: “It [succeeds] as a touching personal reminiscence and as an understated but effective environmental manifesto.” The film opened the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in 2019, and won Best Film at the Ocean Film Festival, Audience Favorite at the Aspen Mountain Film Festival, and many other awards. It is available across all platforms including Apple TV/iTunes and Amazon rentals. Adam Skolnick is the award-winning journalist and author covering adventure sports, environmental issues, travel, and human rights for The New York Times and other outlets. Welcome to Gear Talk! As always, this show is co-hosted by our friends Annie and Brooke from Swimrun Labs.In this installment of Gear Talk, we review one of the hottest new pieces of Swimrun Tech on the market: Frank Paddle’s carbon fiber swim paddles. The founder of Frank Paddle, Fredrik Bengtsson, was cool enough to send us a medium and a large pair of paddles to check out and--spoiler alert--we’re super stoked on them. You can learn more about Fredrik and Frank Paddle on Episode 50 of the podcast. But first, we have an untethered thought submission by our friend (and previous guest on the podcast way back in Episode 18) Marcus Barton blew our collective minds.New Gear First ImpressionsWe have a couple of new items to discuss this week. Swimrun superstar Trista Mennen mailed Brooke her KORP suit that is a size small for her to check it out. We’ll report back.Chipper tried LMNT hydration after hearing that friend of the show, Adam Skolnick, had tried it during his recent feat of endurance. LMNT has some pretty cool flavors and Chipper has been digging it.Will Watt from Above Below recently sent us one of their super popular RuckRafts to test for the show. We are super stoked to check it out in open water soon. The RuckRaft is an inflatable raft that comes with a built in dry bag to tow pretty much anything across the water. This thing looks perfect for a true Swimrun adventure. Stay tuned for a full review of the RuckRaft coming soon.Untethered ThoughtsMarcus reached out to us in response to our last Gear Talk show where we reviewed the Ark Sports KORP wetsuit. He mentioned his thoughts on what the back zipper pocket was for after hearing us go on and on about how we thought the placement was weird. Essentially, the zipper is for your partner to easily access, not yourself. You carry your partner’s nutrition or what have you and they carry yours. Not only does this make a ton of sense, it’s also totally in the spirit of the partner aspect of Swimrun. We then go philosophical for a bit...We collectively loved Marcus’s reasoning so thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. You can learn more from Marcus on his website.Tethered ThoughtsWe wanted to remind everyone of the new Swimrun Swap Meet forum on FB. This is a forum for people that are looking for Swimrun gear to buy, sell or trade. So if anyone got one of the KORP suits on faith but the sizing didn’t work out, we have a place for you to try to trade it. Join the Swimrun Swap Meet today! Frank Paddle Gear ReviewThese paddles are the original carbon fiber swim paddles. Fredrik’s story is a great one and it’s hard not to root for Frank Paddle as a company. These paddles are essentially made by hand and a lot of thought and experimenting went into creating these. You can check out Episode 50 to get the whole story. We were sent the following size paddles:M: length: 21.5cm, width: 19cmL: length: 23.5cm, width: 20.5cmSince we only had one set of each, Chris sent his Large paddles to Brooke to test and Chipper sent his Medium paddles to Annie. So they look cool, they are super light and really stiff. Now, do they work?Swimming ImpressionsFrank Paddle is something completely different. They feel super light and it was a different swimming experience due to the stiffness of them and how much water was being moved. The only way to get to how they perform was to test them.Brooke tested the paddles (with the caveat that the Frank Paddles are larger than the ones that she normally uses) and was about 2 seconds faster per 100yd even though her stroke rate went down noticeably. Over a longer distance, she did two 1-mile (1,650yd) swims, one with her normal synergy paddles and one with the Frank Paddles. In that test the Frank Paddles were almost 2 minutes faster than the regular paddles. Shoulder fatigue was enhanced using the Frank Paddles. Brooke wasn’t a fan of the paracord attachment.Chris saw similar speed improvements to Brooke, albeit less scientific. The feel of the water was very different and every stroke felt very powerful due to the combination of stiffness and lack of holes.“It moves water with aplomb” was the way that Annie (and her friend Caleb) would describe it. While she wasn’t used to using paddles as large as she tested, she saw 4 seconds per 100yd improvement but less so over longer sets due to shoulder fatigue. Annie’s friend Caleb, a born and bred open water swimmer, was cool enough to try the paddles out. He thought that the paddles resulted in one of his faster swims on an open water route that he swims often. He did say that he lost the feel of the water because the paddles were so effective at moving water.Chipper felt that the paddles were super light and was wondering if he would get used to it after using them for a while. He also liked the hole pattern of the paddles and the paracord attachment. Transition/Running ImpressionsWe were all really concerned about durability but Fredrik assured us that they can take a pounding. Sharp pointy things are the enemy of course, but other than that these paddles are designed to handle the rigors of swimrun. We also all agreed that these paddles shouldn’t be an issue on run legs other than the fear of losing them because they are so light or the unsubstantiated fear that they will break if you fall.Other than the paracord straps that are more of a personal preference, the setup for transitions and Swimrun in general are a non-issue. Pull Buoy Rankings RankingsChipper 4 Pull BuoysChipper felt that this paddle wouldn’t be an everyday paddle but they are awesome. They will make you faster (whether placebo effect or not) and are the hottest rage in Swimrun. He will be racing in them.Annie 4 Pull BuoysAnnie thinks that there is no denying the tech in the paddles that even made her faster. She docked points for the price point being so high. She would rate her Synergy paddles a 3.5-4 pull buoys and those are $8. If she was trained up for them, she would use the Frank Paddles.Chris 4.5 Pull BuoysChris would give Frank Paddles 5 pull buoys but for the cost. He thinks that these paddles are a total game-changer if you’re trained up for them and looking for extra speed in the water. He’s a big fan and is a total convert.Brooke 4 Pull BuoysBrooke thinks that if she was able to try a smaller paddle that she would have awarded them 4.5 pull buoys. She thought that they were awesome but she wasn’t a fan of the strapping and the price point. They are the nicest paddles that she’s ever swimming with and thought that they are the real deal.Overall ImpressionsWe all thought that these are the real deal and a total game-changer for swim paddles. If you have the funds and/or desire definitely check out Frank Paddles. They are an amazing piece of tech. Period. If you want to learn more about swim paddles in general, check out our Gear Talk episode all about Swim Paddles with special guest John Stevens. That’s it for this week’s Gear Talk show. Breathing has always been an integral part of yoga practices, but for many years, it was mostly forgotten or taught as an aside to asana practice. Just in the past few years, breathwork has come back into the mainstream bigger than ever before—and it's extreme. From Holotropic breathwork to The Wim Hof Method to free divers and hypoxic training, it seems like breathing has never been more popular, and yet more misunderstood with sometimes disastrous results. On this week's show, you'll meet author and free diving hobbyist, Adam Skolnick who chronicled the life of one of America's most famous freedivers who tragically died in 2013. ------------ What You´ll Learn: Why people are dying in free diving How Adam became a travel writer to support his passion and interests How Adam learned to dive to 30 meters in just 4 days Why social media sometimes presents a "false reality" of what's truly possible 6 competitive disciplines: static apnea, dynamic apnea (mono-fin swimming for distance without breathing), dynamic no fin, constant weight (with fin), constant weight (no fin), free immersion ABOUT OUR GUEST Adam Skolnick has written for the New York Times, Playboy, Outside, ESPN.com, BBC.com, Salon.com, Men's Health, Wired, and Travel + Leisure, among others.
