In today's episode, we're talking with Jessica Thiefels - a published author, host of Mindset, Reset Radio, CEO of Jessica Thiefels, and co-founder of Don't Ask How. She's been writing for more than 10 years and has been featured in top publications, including Forbes and Entrepreneur. She is republishing her book on Amazon next month – “10 questions that answer life's biggest questions” and she's on a mission to empower women to make their own rules and live with intention, so that they wake up every day excited about the life they get to live. And I am so excited for her to share some of her great words of wisdom with you all today. Memorable Moments:[00:04:15.11] Stop accepting the status quo. The status quo is meant to keep us on a certain track, doing what our parents wanted us to do or what we think we should do.  Question the status quo, so we can really start to build that extraordinary life we really see for ourselves. Why do I need to work nine to five? Why do I need to work for someone else? Why can't I create my own business? You can![00:06:56.03] Don't wait until something massive, traumatic, or terrible happens to make an important change in our life when we have the opportunity to do that all the time. Ask yourself that question constantly to make sure that you are living in your values and that you are moving towards what you want. [00:09:34.24] Make your own rules. Surround yourself with people who are thinking these really big things because it reminds us that we can make our own rules. It's so easy to get stifled by people who are triggered by our ambition or too scared to dream big or make their own way. Take risks and be fearless.[00:12:42.08] Live an empowered life and know that in the doing is how you're going to change your life.  Follow Jessica:https://www.instagram.com/jessicathiefels/https://www.jessicathiefels.comConnect with Allison:https://www.instagram.com/allisonwalshconsulting/Download your 2021 Goals Workbook: https://bit.ly/2021AWCgoals#makeyourownrules, #livefearlessly, #MindsetResetRadio, #SheBelievedSheCould, #Success, #10questionsthatanswerlifesbiggestquestions, #successcoach, #entrepreneur

The boys on the boat are heading to Tokyo. The U.S. men's rowing team will kick off competition on the same day as the Opening Ceremony, July 23. The guys have called Oakland, California, home for the last few years. They're based out of the Cal Berkeley boathouse on the Oakland Estuary where athletes credit straight, flat water for getting them in shape for the games. But, the pandemic posed big challenges for this team. Rowing isn't social-distance friendly. The guys went months without training in their boats and had to get creative with their quarantine workouts. They also had to face personal decisions about whether they could delay careers for another year after the 2020 Olympics got pushed back. On this Dying to Ask: How athletes made the decision to delay careers one more year to compete in Tokyo Why they describe being an Olympian as a selfish act And how much fun it is to get up before the sun to hang out with your friends on the water

Our guest today is all about non-profit life. Tune in to find out how you can adapt it for yourself.    Episode Introduction:  What started as a spiritual journey has now become her life's motive, Kele Pandolfe talks about her journey of finding her true purpose in life and how she set it up to do good for several people around her.   Episode Summary:  Kele Pandolfe walks us through her story of empowering at-risk youth globally, through education, awareness, vocational training, and biblical discipleship. She shares her motivation, the challenges she faced, and the success she has achieved. She also talks about starting a non-profit and leading a purposeful life.   Main Takeaways: Remember to be fully present in each of your life's experiences because they're all leading you towards your true purpose in life. Every state has a different procedure to file for a non-profit, be sure to look into the requirements of where you're filing yours. Be careful of how you use your speech because it can be both life-giving and life-damaging for someone. If there's something positive that you really want to do, there are no limits to achieving it. Our fear usually stems from those things that we do not know the outcome of. Be sure to share your dreams with the people who'll be supportive and not try to smash them. Your purpose is always going to have its people. It's important to remember who you are serving and why you chose to serve them. You can do a quick Google search in order to understand the requirements of starting a non-profit in your geographical region. The first three steps to take when starting a non-profit:  Meditate or pray - take some time to think through your vision and your goals. Understand the requirement for your non-profit, your demographic, why are you starting, and write it down to get a clear idea. Find three people who are going to support your vision and your dream. Start by laying the groundwork yourself initially and then reach for professional help later.   Recommended Resources:  When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty Without Hurting the Poor . . . and Yourself by Brian Fikkert and Steve Corbett. 099: Share an Observation Instead of Asking a Question

It’s often better to share an observation than to ask a question. It deepens a relationship by allowing people to open up on their terms. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 99. We are just one episode away from turning over our podcast odometer to 100 episodes. I’ve got a special program planned for next week with an interesting guest lined up to join us. But for today, as we say good-bye to double-digit episode numbers, I’ve got something for those of you who want deeper relationships with people, BUT who feel uncomfortable asking questions of others. For new listeners to the podcast, we’ve been talking in recent episodes about asking questions to deepen our relationships with people. Before we get into this though, I want to share a few responses I received from listeners to a question I raised a few weeks ago. Namely, “What else do you do when you listen to podcasts?” Podcasts are great to listen to while doing something else, and I thought our listeners would be interested in know what that “something else” is for each of us. Listener responses A listener from England wrote, “Two things for me: peeling or chopping vegetables at the kitchen table or (most preferred) having a good cup of Yorkshire tea and just listening as I enjoy. (Now those two things go together well!)” A missionary from the Balkan countries of Eastern Europe said: “I follow about 6-8 podcasts regularly and usually listen when I am at home alone (or when my children are sleeping) and I am cleaning the house, cooking, or folding laundry. Makes a sort of boring, mundane chore quite enjoyable for me!” Finally, Linda, a retired missionary and listener from North Carolina wrote: "Hello John, Sometimes I exercise on my indoor exercise bike while listening to the [your] podcast while other times I go outside and take a walk. Other times I ‘set you’ on the kitchen counter to listen while I fix breakfast. You seem to show up in different ways!" Thank you for those responses. I’d love to hear from more of you as to what you typically do while listening to podcasts. Now on to today’s show. It’s a solution for those of us who would like to go deeper in our relationships with people, but without relying just on asking questions to get there. So keep listening. Caution with asking questions As much as we’ve talked about the power of asking questions, there are a few caveats to this skill. It goes without saying that questions to deepen a relationship do not evoke one-word answers. Yes or no. it also goes without saying that in some cultures around the world, asking questions of each other is offensive. So be careful. Questions asked too quickly, and too often, can put the other person on the defensive and back them into a corner. So slow down. Some people need time to process a question they’re asked. Allow for periods of silence. Questions, when used improperly, can be a form of control. They can take people where they don’t want to go, and you end up alienating people from yourself. We sometimes ask questions when we are really making a statement. Avoid doing this. It’s not being honest and can come across as being controlling. So instead of asking, “Aren’t you going to take the garbage out tonight,” say instead, “please take the garbage out tonight.” Rather than asking a question, try this instead Instead of asking a question, share an observation. An observation is a deeper form of engagement than a question. This is the O - Observe, in O.R.A. Observe-Remember-Ask It’s a big picture skill. More difficult, in my opinion, than the other two elements of ORA. More difficult than Remember or Ask How do you make an observation? Act as a mirror. Mirrors reflect reality Reflect back emotions you see in the other person: “You seem upset today.” Reflect back themes and patterns you observe: “I noticed that whenever I ask you about where you are from, your eyes light up” “It seems to me like … “you’ve got something on your mind that is troubling you.” Share reflective statements, “I wonder statements.” : “I wonder what it must be like to always feel you have to defend yourself.” A real-life example The time Janet shared an observation when she said, “I don’t think you’re spending enough time with the kids.” She could have asked a question instead, “Why don’t you spend more time with the kids?” or “When are you going to spend more time with the kids?” The observation she shared was much more powerful. It wasn’t a job, a directive, an order. It wasn’t even a request. It can be very affirming and encouraging to hear the observations of another person. Where all too close to what is going on in our life. “I wonder how many people I’ve looked at all my life and never seen.”~ John Steinbeck So what does all this mean for YOU? How can you use what you’ve heard today to improve the relationships in YOUR life? Here are a few ideas: Instead of asking: share an observation instead: "Why are you angry," becomes  "You seem angry." Instead of "When are you going to clean your office?, instead say, I’ve noticed the clutter in your office has reappeared. Rather than "Who were you talking to on the phone? ", try sharing an observation, You seemed pretty animated when you were on that phone call. "Why are you so sad today? " would be better put, You look sad to me. "What are you worried about?" can be better stated,  It seems to me like you’re troubled about something. I wonder what it is. Instead of asking, "What are you so happy about?" share an observation like this, You sure seem in a good mood today. Use doorknob observations with people who are better at words than you are. “I wonder statements are good for this.” If you forget everything else, here’s the one thing I hope you remember from today’s episode. Experiment with turning your questions into observations. Act as a mirror in the important relationships in your life. See how much deeper your interactions go when you make an observation, rather than when you ask a question. I’d love to hear any thoughts you have about today’s episode. I’d like to hear how trying out this new relational skill goes for you. You can email me at john@caringforothers.org. I may share them in a future episode unless you say otherwise. You can also share your thoughts in the “Leave a Reply” box at the bottom of the show notes. Closing In closing, if you found the podcast helpful, please subscribe if you haven’t already done so. You can also help us to serve more people when you leave a review wherever you get your podcasts. I hope your thinking was stimulated by today’s show, to both reflect and to act. So that you will find the joy God intends for you through your relationships. Because after all, You Were Made for This. Well, that’s all for today. Have you seen "Operation Varsity Blues" on Netflix yet? It's one of the network's most-streamed shows these days and it's full of Sacramento connections. It's shocked viewers for two reasons. One, it's still hard to believe Aunt Becky did what she did. Two, it's truly sad to find out how much stress high school kids face trying to get into the college of their dreams. And, that was pre-pandemic. Now, kids have spent the last year in isolation spending more time alone and on screens. Wellbeings.org tracked 1,000 teens last fall. The results are shocking. Half said their mental health is worse or somewhat worse than it was pre-pandemic. More than 50% said their social life is worse or somewhat worse. And 72% feel coronavirus will put their generation at a disadvantage for a long time. It means the relationship between parent and teen has never been more important. The problem is it's now more complicated than ever. That's why Cynthia Muchnick and Jenn Curtis wrote "The Parent Compass: Navigating your Teen's Wellness & Academic Journey in Today's Competitive World." Neither Muchnick nor Curtis knew families were taking fake rowing pics to scam their way into prestigious schools. But they did know that something awful was brewing in how families pursued college acceptances overall. Both have worked as college counselors for years and were troubled by what they were seeing in their offices. Kids who couldn't speak for themselves. Parents who can't stop talking about their kids' college dreams. Muchnick and Curtis say now is the time to reboot how you parent and see your kid for who they truly are, and more importantly, who they truly want to become. Failing to do so can have disastrous results. On this Dying to Ask: How to be a more effective parent during the teen years. What the college process is really like right now. And why pandemic parents need to give themselves a timeout and learn how to listen.

This week, Dan Neumann is joined by his co-host, Sam Falco, principal trainer and professional scrum trainer at AgileThought.   Together, they’re exploring a question that was sent in by a listener. They asked Dan and Sam to share their take on “the Spotify Model.” The popularized model was first introduced in 2012 by the whitepaper, “Scaling Agile @ Spotify” and described a “people-driven, autonomous approach for scaling agile that emphasizes the importance of culture and network.”   Often, organizations will look at a successful company and say, “How can we emulate what they do?” rather than, “How can we emulate how they think?” There is a desire to mimic a pattern that another organization created because it fits their context, environment, people, and processes. However, installing the Spotify model can be fraught with danger because you’re not Spotify in 2012.   If you have your own question for the Agile Coaches’ Corner that you want Dan and Sam to answer in a future episode, you can send it in at AgileThought.com!   Key Takeaways Why wouldn’t the Spotify Model work for your organization? Just because you see somebody do something someplace else, doesn’t mean it’s going to work for you — because you’re not them You shouldn’t look at a successful company and say, “How can we emulate what they do?” but rather, “How can we emulate how they think?” (i.e. “the Spotify Model” worked for Spotify, but will not work for your company — emulating is not likely to bring you success) The model may not be applicable — and even if it is, there is going to be resistance and additional challenges will be exposed that will need to be addressed Parallels between how organizations bring in the Spotify Model vs. how they bring in the Scrum framework: With both, if you don’t do all of the elements, success is less likely The Scrum framework, however, is a lot easier to adopt (preferably, adopt the Scrum framework and use it to find out what processes work for your organization) Installing the Spotify Model can be fraught with danger because you’re not Spotify in 2012 You could try implementing some of the Spotify Model’s approaches (but most importantly, make sure it works for your organization) When it comes to implementing any type of framework or model, the early questions should be: “What do you hope to accomplish? Why do you want to install this model or adopt this framework? What’s not working for you now and how do you think this will fix it?” This way, you can evaluate and measure  Regardless of what model you’re proposing, think about: What does success look like? Why are you doing it? What is the problem you’re trying to solve? Tips for adopting any model or framework: Look at what’s working (and not working) within your own organization and have discussions on what to do next based on this Adopt an experimental mindset Be clear about the problem(s) you’re trying to solve as an organization Be clear about how you’re measuring success Look at all of the components of whatever you’re trying to adopt and ask, “How will this work here?”, “What will prevent this from happening?”, and “What exists in our current system that is antithetical to these components?” Approach the question of “Should we adopt _______ model or framework,” with empathy and humility — whatever is being suggested (by whoever it may be) is trying to help the organization; not hurt it How to ensure that implementation of a model or framework is successful: Facilitate and make sure that you have all levels of the organization involved Ask: “How is it that we can maintain our current system and adopt a new system and still be successful?” Remember: The current system is not going to change overnight Note: Your journey will not be a straight shot from point A to point B No matter the model or framework, the organization’s DNA is going to respond in unexpected ways — be prepared for the unexpected Bureaucracy kills innovation — if you want to be innovative, you need to kill bureaucracy It can be extremely beneficial to get an outside perspective and bring someone in outside of your organization   Mentioned in this Episode: The Spotify Model “Scaling Agile @ Spotify,” by Henrik Kniberg & Anders Ivarsson Humanocracy: Creating Organizations as Amazing as the People Inside Them, by Gary Hamel and Michele Zanini Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 5: “Exploring an Experimental Mindset with Adam Ulery” Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 120: “Build Better Teams with Sam Falco” The Tuckman Model Jira LiberatingStructures.com Wicked Questions | LiberatingStructures.com Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 122: “The Journey of an Agile Transformation with Quincy Jordan” “Regardless of what we discover, we understand and truly believe that everyone did the best job they could, given what they knew at the time, their skills and abilities, the resources available, and the situation at hand.” — Norman KerthProject Retrospectives: A Handbook for Team Review, by Norman L. I'm going to give you some tips that have been very helpful for me as I’ve pursued full circle success in my own career path.   I believe it is 100% up to you to chart your own course, whether you are doing this in your own business and growing a team, or if you are selected to be a part of a team.    “It is 100% up to you to chart your own course.”   Define Roles and Responsibilities  As you step into a position, make sure that your roles and responsibilities are clearly defined. This is a non-negotiable, and you should never even apply to a job that doesn’t have these roles clearly outlined.   “Desperate people hire desperate people.”   If someone is advertising for help on Facebook that's a red flag. This tells you that they have never taken the time to define those roles and responsibilities, which usually means they don’t have a lot of clarity as a business owner. This is a no-win situation that will eventually catch up with you and cause agony while you are with them.   Identify Key Results Areas (KRAs)   KRAs refer to what is going to be accomplished in your role for the first 30 days, the next 30 days, and the next 30 after that (we call them 30-60-90s). In most cases if someone isn’t familiar with hiring, they are going to skip this piece because they are so excited to get you through the door. But for you to be ultimately successful this is the most critical piece. If it's not inside your training, you need to be the leader and own this piece.    “Don’t get past day 3 without asking what your goals are for 30-60-90.”    How do you create these for yourself? 1. Look back at the job description so you understand what the owner is thinking about. 2. Have a dedicated one to one full hour talking with the business owner who you report to. Ask: How do you want to feel as the business owner? Now you start thinking about the actions you can take that align to the job description and start mapping a course for yourself. What can you do to make this person feel less overwhelmed? What needs to get done? Prioritize the projects that need to get done. It is impossible to get 10 projects done in the first 30 days. Get a sense of the scope of the projects and prioritize with the owner when it makes sense to begin.   3. Ask the business owner about profit producing activities that you can assist on. This is important so you can show your return on investment. Get closer to profit producing activities without being on the marketing side of the business. What are the things you can do to assist to help create greater profit? If you are an operator, make sure to check out episode 63, where we talk about the TIES method, which is critical for helping the business owner understand what can be done in those 30-60-90 days.   The advantage of creating the 30-60-90s? Ideally the business owner creates these themselves but in many situations they aren't really prepared for you. So by leading this conversation you appear as a leader and this helps make yourself indispensable.    These also help you as the employer contractor because not only is the business owner less overwhelmed, but you are less overwhelmed because you have clear direction. You know what it takes to be successful or to pitch yourself for a raise/add a profit share. I want you to have a long healthy relationship with your client, and 30-60-90s are the key to making that happen.   Establish Meeting Cadence Make sure you have a strong and certain meeting cadence established. If you haven’t had a lot of direction, then you are probably going to continue onboard yourself. You need to ask them to determine how often you need to meet and what is expected in the meetings. Do you need reporting? I never want you to be in a situation where you are just meeting to meet. If you know what is expected of you from those meetings, you can have a more concise, powerful meeting,  Businesses who put off regular meetings are overwhelmed. If you don't have an existing meeting cadence established, your position is at risk. Ultimately what meetings are used for are two-way communication, which is one of your most important goals. What meetings are the most important? Who are the people you need to be talking to on a regular basis? Raise your hand and let them know that support you will need.    Over time as the owner starts to feel the relationship solidify, they perceive the two-way communication and they want to back off. Don’t let the owner back off of these meetings! Their job is to lead the business, which means leading the team. If you as an operator are taking this off of the CEOs plate, you have to establish repeated meetings which are predictably scheduled, complete with agendas. Do not let this go by the wayside.    Ask for Performance Reviews Make sure you get performance reviews. You understand what your responsibilities are, you know what your 30-60-90 goals are, you have regular meetings and open communication, so it should be easy to ask to set up a performance review.    You've done your diligence when you set up your 30-60-90 framework, which is exactly what you are going to use to determine if you are meeting your goals. If you have gone above and beyond the 30-60-90 goals or surpassed them, I want you to be able to note those every step of the way.    If you want to be indispensable, make sure to ask for performance reviews. Before you show up to that review you should have notes and be equipped with talking points about what’s working and what is not.    Show Mastery When you create something new, create and document SOPs. Often, we are so busy doing that we never bother to create an SOP. As a business owner, if I have someone in my business who is keeping a log of standard operating procedures that I've never even had to ask for… the value of the relationship is enormous.    If you have accomplished what has been outlined in your 30-60-90s, and your leader has reviewed it, given you feedback, and you’ve been documenting SOPs, you’ve reached the mastery level in that business. Time for a raise, title change, promotion or profit share! But you may have to bring it to the leaders attention, because they are so busy growing their brand they may not even notice mastery.    Show mastery in the role you have been hired for. This usually takes about 6 months, but when you get to the mastery level, you need to communicate it. The next piece of the puzzle is to begin training other people. Start to develop your next role in the business, and plan to train the new person coming in. When you can grow inside of a company to the next level and take the burden off the leader by training the next person to backfill the role you were playing, that is a huge win for the business owner and allows you to get the next level position in the company.  Weekly Ops Activity Create your 30-60-90 day goal plan for your existing roles. Scrum Mastership: Patterns and Practices vs. Principles

In this episode, co-hosts Dan Neumann and Sam Falco discuss the topic of filling the role of a Scrum Master. In particular, whether you should follow Scrum practices and patterns as opposed to using the Scrum principles, or vice-versa. They talk about what they see most Scrum Masters doing, some of the common mistakes they may make, how to take an effective approach as Scrum Master, and share some of the lessons they have learned throughout their careers as Scrum Masters themselves.   Key Takeaways Advice for new Scrum Masters/What Scrum Masters should be aware of: Get feedback and act on it — especially when it’s interpersonal feedback Ask: “How can I be serving my team better?” Build support for your team around Scrum (which may be new and uncomfortable to them) The impulse may be to say, “I’m doing this because that is what it says to do in the book,” but that’s not a satisfying answer for anybody If somebody asks, “Why do we have to have a daily Scrum?” Don’t just say it is because “daily” is in the title — instead, ask, “What value are you not getting out of the daily Scrum?” Whenever your team is unsure about why they are doing a particular practice, ask, “Why wasn’t this valuable?” and “How can we get more value out of it?” Getting a Scrum certification from 2006 or 2008 isn’t sufficient; you have to continuously learn and improve as a Scrum Master — new practices are constantly emerging and you have to adapt “Let them fail” can be misconstrued as not giving someone enough support in their role and letting them fail (what it actually means is putting someone in the place to win and giving them the chance to fail) The new Scrum Guide is an amazing resource because it strips away all of the prescriptive practices and is easier for new Scrum Masters to follow Ask: “Is your daily scrum effective at helping you plan so that this won’t happen again?” The Scrum Master has to guide the team in a way that’s not telling them what to do Sometimes as a Scrum Master the best thing you can do is say nothing (which doesn’t mean sitting back and doing nothing; but actively observing, considering, and when your team asks a question, follow it up with another question [i.e. “What do you think you can do?” or “What are some options?” and allow them to figure things out]) Don’t give your team answers, this disempowers them; instead, allow them to try something on their own (they may solve the problem in a better way) Even if a team member fails when you allow them to try something their own way, remember: you’re only one sprint away from recovering in Scrum As a Scrum Master, there are times where you may need to step in (i.e. when you know something is going to result in something bad that will cause strife) Upholding Scrum is a part of the Scrum Master’s accountability The one situation in which a Scrum Master absolutely needs to step in is if there is abuse If you feel things have gotten stale as a Scrum Master it is time to broaden your horizons and think about the different ways you can serve your team Continue to learn and explore different options for how to build some excitement and make Agile principles and Scrum values more present Patterns and Practices vs. Principles Doing the practices in an inappropriate way can be harmful and the principles can really illuminate effective ways to do that Patterns and practices are important (but equally as important is building the principles so that you’re doing them effectively at the right times) The pattern is important but you need to understand the principle behind it and why you’re doing it so you can then adapt it As a beginning Scrum Master, it is helpful to follow the practices but if you’re only following the rule because “it says so” or “I say so” it is not a good strategy to push forward with As a Scrum Master, it is your job to help people become effective and figure out what patterns and practices work for them   Mentioned in this Episode: AgileThought.com/Events — Visit for AgileThought’s upcoming virtual events & RSVP!   Refusal Heuristic Traps:   How to avoid heuristic traps:     Competency Vs Capacity: Competency is a global assessment and legal determination made by a judge in court. Capacity is a functional assessment and a clinical determination about a specific decision that can be made by any clinician familiar with a patient’s case. How does a patient demonstrate capacity? •Understanding – The ability to understand, i.e., knows the information being presented. Consider a patient who is having a COPD exacerbation, they know they have it, the treatment for it, and the benefits and risks of the treatment for COPD. •Expressing a choice – Can clearly communicate their choice when you present multiple options. A patient that frequently changes their choice (if they have some neurologic condition) could indicate they lack capacity. •Appreciation – They can apply the facts that you present to their own life and understands it’s relevance. If they do not acknowledge their illness or facts about their illness due to some delusions may lack capacity. •Reasoning – The ability to compare options and to infer consequences of a choice. Ask “How is not being transported to the hospital better than being transported”. This should illicit the patients values, which will require the patient to compare the consequences of what they want to do compared to what they do not want to do.       References Dastidar, J., 2011. How Do I Determine If My Patient Has Decision-Making Capacity?. In this episode, Dan Neumann is joined by a frequent guest of his and AgileThought colleague, Quincy Jordan! Quincy is a Principal Transformation Consultant and has been with AgileThought for almost three years.   Together, they will be exploring when things are going so well that you just don’t notice that there are problems bubbling beneath the surface. They address what kind of problems show up when teams become complacent due to things going so well, how to spot these problems (and address them) before they start, and how to differentiate between when things are going “so well that you don’t notice” and actually being on the right path.   Key Takeaways The problems that arise when things are going so well that you don’t notice that they’re not: When a Scrum Master is doing super well in their role, those outside the team or the leaders in the organization begin to question if they really need the role However, if you remove that Scrum Master when the team is doing great and maturing well, things will continue in a downwards trajectory (the same way a car does when a tire goes flat) It’s the classic scenario of “you’ve done your job too well” and others don’t realize how valuable and important that is Sometimes the role of Scrum Master role is switched up or rotated in a way that doesn’t fully fill it and the wheels eventually fall off When things are going well those who suffer from a hero complex lose the opportunity to be the hero anymore —  this can lead to situations such as: When developers have an abnormal tolerance for tech debt (i.e. they are not paying as much attention to the quality of code or adhering to standards that are good for the team, which creates an abnormal amount of bugs that the team has to fix. Then, said developer jumps in as the hero) I.e. Firefighters lighting fires to put them out When things are going well there can be a tendency to start to question roles and processes (such as the Scrum Master role and the processes and organizational support that are in place to support the team/s) When things are questioned, it can affect not only the team/s, but it also affects the organization as a whole Both the team/s and the organization can become complacent if things are working so well How to avoid getting trapped in this way of thinking: Leadership should be constantly assessing whether or not they’re providing the right types of problems to solve The team should be asking themselves if they’re looking at the right problems to solve Is the team properly considering Horizons Two and Three if they are beginning to go down the path of the Three Horizons model? Shift from “How much faster can the teams go?” and “How much more stuff can they deliver?” to “Are we delivering the right capabilities?”, “Are we delivering things customers want?”, and “Are we continuing to experiment and innovate?” The wrong question is: “Can we get even more out of this team?” The right question is: “Can we make sure that we’re providing them with the right problems to solve?”; “Where can we, from a leadership standpoint, give more guidance to increase business value?” How to differentiate between a mature and a complacent team: Though they can sometimes look the same on the surface, a very complacent team will have far more carry-over stories than a mature team Ask: ‘How well has this team challenged themselves in terms of their own velocity?’ and ‘Are they taking it upon themselves?’ A more mature team would exhibit these types of these behaviors as opposed to a complacent team A more mature team makes time for continuous improvement and retrospectives whereas complacent teams make them cut them out or make them shorter Mature teams dig deep and find opportunities to improve Mature teams look below the surface and think more critically   Mentioned in this Episode: Quincy Jordan AgileThought Careers Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 101: “Are Scrum Masters Expendable?” Three Horizons by McKinsey & Company Measure What Matters: How Google, Bono, and the Gates Foundation Rock the World with OKRs, by John Doerr   Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? This year has been a rollercoaster ride for everyone and for everyone’s business. We get to choose whether we are seeing opportunities or cowering in fear of uncertainty. For those of us who want to move forward in our business, this is how we can face what lies ahead - by asking questions that truly matter in our business, in ourselves, and in our marketing. Answering those questions provides us a gauge on how to act on it. And by saying so, let’s start asking ourselves questions that push us toward our goals. How can we navigate through these times and thrive? What are the concrete steps I need to do to be able to gain more clients? How should I plan to show up for my clients? What am I capable of doing at this time? These are questions that allow you to become proactive. And this is good for raising your positivity meter. Think about your customer service. Have you done enough in this area? Ask - How am I making my clients’ experience of the service even more magical for them? How do I continue to serve them better? Am I truly helping them get the results that they want? Be obsessed with your success in creating success stories for them. It will only serve you better in getting testimonials and referrals. Marketing is also one big chunk of your concern. Consider your content creation. Think about the who, what, where, when, why, and how of creating it. Be specific with the message you want to be conveyed by taking into account where they’re at in their buyer’s journey - are they problem aware, solution aware or are they completely unaware? Also, learn to leverage your time. How can you do that? Learn to repurpose your material and turn them into different social media assets. Learn to verbalize your message to come up with effective marketing. Creating systems also helps you save time. Ask yourself when are you going to document the process of your business operations because in doing so you increase your efficiency as they become reliable and repeatable.  Most importantly, ask yourself - What is my highest potential look like? What is that one thing I am capable of doing? What is it that I deserve? What result do I want for my business? Are my values aligned with my actions? The answers to these questions will get you to do unconventional actions that will get you results. And that’s what matters.

Eating it means they digest it; it becomes part of them. “You are what you eat.”Explain that, in Amos’ day, people needed the word of God, but they weren’t getting it. There was lots of religion, but not much “meat.”Take a minute or two to bring this principle to life. Ask:How do you feel after eating a light meal? (Give some examples.) You’d be hungry again in a half-hour!In contract, what sorts of things are in a filling, nutritious dinner? How do we “eat” the word of God? What can I do every day to make sure I am eating right?Take time to read the Bible.Don’t just wolf it down – eating without thinking. (Does your dog give a lot of thought to the food it is eating? We shouldn’t be like that when we study God’s word.) Think about what you are taking in.Even though the prophet Amos spoke 2800 years ago, the message is still for today. There is a famine for the word.People aren’t finding the word of God.They are wandering around looking for the truth.Yet a lot people who are wandering around prefer not to find the truth. But there is a great banquet prepared for us and everybody else. This is good news.

In this episode, we discuss options trading, what options contracts are, how they work and how I make money using them. Disclaimer: “I am not a registered investment advisor or securities broker dealer. These are my thoughts and are not advice. Seek your own education or you will lose money.” #4 Rule of Gold - (Richest Man in Babylon) Gold slippeth away from the man who invests it in businesses or purposes with which he is not familiar or which are not approved by those skilled in its keep. Become familiar with how options, learn and practice before you get involved. If you don't, as the rule says, Gold/Money will slip away from you. Learn the difference between a Call vs Put, this is part of the foundation of options trading. Pillars of Option Contracts: Options chain Strike Price Expiration day Bid vs Ask How money is made, contract pricing: Premium Time value Intrinsic value - A few things that I look at when scanning for options contracts include: stock price action, history of movement, strategy to extract money, and percentages/standard deviations (in/out of money). You want to learn about individual stocks and industries better understand how the Market Maker will price the options. WATCH OUT FOR SPREADS The stock market was created to fool the most amount of people-most of the time. Beware of volatility. WE LOVE VOLATILITY because we can make large sums of money but we have to learn how to navigate it or we can lose large sums of money if not navigated correctly. Once you become familiar (rule #4) then this can be really easy. Options trade of the week: Stock: Slack technologies; ticker symbol: WORK Call option; Time: 5 days; Cost: $60 (34C, 33.5C) Sold 34C: $36 (+20%); Sold 33.5C: $80 (+167%) Instagram @marketadventurespodcast Subscribe on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen to your podcasts WHAT'S THE KEY: Learn → test → “perfect” → Scale up = $$$ --- Join thesavings.club to get $5 towards your automatic savings account | Powered by Digit.co --- Is the Stock Market the answer for you? This conversation with Shanda Sumpter changed my life. For the first half of the episode, she teaches us how to grow a business to 10-figures (which, of course, she has done with. See Heartcore Business. The rest of the episode, she teaches us how to buy and sell a home using none of your own money. It was so powerful because it was so actionable, so I had to go back and listen and write down a bunch of notes. There was so much gold I couldn’t keep type fast enough! I would be furiosuly typing away while the audio played, then Shanda would say something else that I wanted to write down and I’d have to pause. It was crazy. See all my takeaways below in the form of scattered and abbreviated notes:How to grow your business to 10-figuresEmpower the right leaders within the company to run different platforms and departments. “Who is the person I need to hire for that?” Shift to being about leadership.Use Indeed and write ads to the exact person you want to hire. “This is where we want to go.” Share the vision. Articulate it and you will attract good people…Shanda’s pitch: If you’re addicted to your phone, a workaholic, obsessed with results, and constantly studying your craft. You forgot that you hit your goal because you already are working on the next. If that’s you, keep reading. If not, stop because you will hate this job.Pay higher on the back end. Incentive ambitious people. You get paid every month for 12 months on one sale.Sales trainer paid 2% override and for every hire that stays 90 days.Increase the price point. Package it with how to build email list, business around it, etc. (regarding my business, Trend Up Media)Incentivize people to pay in full because you can invest that upfront cash in new hires and bigger reach.Hire a sales manager/trainer to hire and train salespeople. 8-10 sales per salesperson per month minimum. Now I focus on lead gen, marketing, fulfillment/operationThe sales department puts pressure on the marketing department to deliver which then becomes an accountability game for me as an entrepreneur to grow my company.A sales director that wants to make money that grows the team to X number of people… How do I create the leads for them that are qualified? Reinvent the packages to grow this much bigger.Quote from Shanda: “People who are saying nobody’s buying right now don’t know how to take a prospect and shape them into a customer. Anyone who knows how to do that knows right now is a great time to be online.”How to generate life-changing wealth during a down economyPay yourself first – $X per month automatically deposited into a savings account to buy things with.Think outside the box – Buy properties using none of your own money. Reach out to homeowners and say, “I’ll take over the monthly payment and in two years I’ll have this house off your hands or you can have it back.” Wealth transfers.Quote from Shanda: “People are trying to work their way to millions and that is ignorance. That is an employee mindset. You don’t work yourself to millions; You leverage yourself to make millions.”Google “lease option”. It’s rent to own.If you’re going to rent it, you might as well rent to own it.Promissory note – A signed document containing a written promise to pay a stated sum to a specified person or the bearer at a specified date or on demand.Have to be making offers on a regular basis.Quote from Shanda: “If you are comfortable, you are in a very dangerous position.”Quote from Shanda: “If you think you’re just going to work for the rest of your life and you are going to make millions and every year is going to be amazing, you are sadly mistaken.”Quote from Shanda: “If you grow at the level you make money, you are making a mistake. You don’t want to die with an 800 credit score. That’s dumb. You want to use your credit to get access to cash to put money down on marketing campaigns that are working.”Say, “I buy homes cash. I will take over your house payment.” Put signs out at busy intersections.Call and make offers. Ask:How much money do you owe on it?How much equity is in the house? Then…Tie up the home.Sell the home to an investor.Take a finder’s fee on the property.Control the property.Google local investment groups.Bird-dogging deals.Bird dog fees. You want to be so well grounded on how to create cash so you never have money be your boss. You have to master money for your life. You can’t ever stop at your capacity for time or money.Start tracking your time by the hour.Do you start with a plan at the beginning of the day? Do you know what you are going to produce every hour? What am I going to produce this hour? Did I do it? Yes or no?Google these:“What is a bird dog in real estate?”“How do you find real estate investors?”“Real estate investment groups”Don’t be afraid to do other countries. Buy in the UK because your money is worth more.Ask real estate investment groups, “What are you educating your group on? I want to know in case I come across any deals you guys might want.”They say, “We like pre-construction real estate”Go to developers. Say “my buyers want this deal. They want 30% discount on the property. They want this, that, the other thing. Can you create this deal?”They create the deal.I bring it back to the investment group and say, “Do you want this deal? My developer said he would do this.”They say yes. The deal is brokered together and I take a finder’s fee on it.Questions? Reach out to Shanda on Instagram. Today we're talking about how to strengthen your marriage during hard times instead of letting those hard times pull you apart. I'm joined by my husband of almost 9 years, Andrew, for today's episode as we share some practical tips that have made all the difference for us as we've gone from bombing the hard times to having the hard times actually bring us together more. Key Points from this Episode: Everyone's challenging times are different, but we can apply some principles to keep on the same page with our spouse when we are feeling the challenge. When big challenges are going on, remember that you can't always be "on." Give yourself and your spouse grace. Lower your expectations! Paper plates, to us, means it's a hard season and dishes is something we can let slide. It's so much easier to get kids to dump their plates in the garbage than to handle all the cleanup of the kitchen after dealing with a meal. Assume that your spouse is doing their best, even if it's nowhere close to their normal maximum capacity. Check in and connect every night especially during hard times. Ask "How are you? and Where are you at?" Figure out the stories you are telling yourself about your interpretations of the day. You'll often find that the same experience has impacted each of you completely differently. Ask "If I could do one thing, what's the one thing that's the most meaningful or helpful to you today?" or "What deadlines do you have?" "What are your top priorities right now that need time and focus?" Asking these types of questions help figure out the pain points everyone is dealing with and maximizes the little effort that can get done during the day. We have weekly planning meetings as a couple. In that, we each share our top 3 priorities to accomplish that week. Planning helps us adjust our efforts to help both of us meet our goals. Share some fun and happy things that happened each day during your evening check-in. Friday night default is date night! Rarely do we leave the house, but we know we will spend the time together after kids are in bed. Planning on it makes it something to look forward to and help us grow closer together. Serve your spouse a little, even if you feel maxed out. It will go such a long way!

20 Twenty20 Tips for a Great Year How to Make It Your Best Year Ever Bernard Kelvin Clive  How different would you live your life if there was no calendar? At the end and beginning of every year, there is an increase in goal setting activities, people set goals and resolutions with the hope of achieving them. The question is, what if these activities were a lifestyle, done throughout the year and not tied to a particular ending or beginning? What if, we simply decide to enjoy our daily lives while pursuing or set goals and dreams? Well, today I present to you tips to make the best of your daily life, hence your year. Let’s get started! Tip #1 Define your Success Success means different things to different people. To begin with, define what success (a great year), means to you. In your terms, don’t let society determine that for you. Once you’ve done that, you set yourself free from the pressures of society by not leaving to impress others and ready to succeed. Tip #2 Be Decisive Decide to make it great. Once you define what success and a great year or life mean to you, the next thing to do is decide to make it so. You are a decision away from your life’s breakthrough. You hold the keys to your life’s happiness. Decide this day, to make the rest of your life the best you can ever have. Tip #3 Your big idea! You must have an intriguing idea, a dream; something you are so passionate about, a problem to solve, a need to meet, a mark to make. That is your Dream, Your Vision, Your Goal: Be specific! See the big picture. How will it be like, when you finally get it? What will success mean to you? Set crystal clear goals; goals that will set your heart on fire. Make it important to you. Tip #4 Focus (Follow One Course Until Successful). Master One thing. Don’t dissipate your energy. Ask yourself, what one thing do I want to be noted for this year? Then channel all your energy and resources to make it happen. Become so good at what you do that you can’t be ignored. So, become the best in your chosen field.  Tip #5 Raise the bar on yourself! Think Big! Expand your vision and expect more from yourself than anyone, then, go make it happen. Compete against yourself and challenge yourself daily. Use your creative imagination. Think win, win, in all the time. Ask: How can I help someone win today? How can I be a miracle to someone?  Tip #6 Build a team Carefully select your dream team. Remember: you are the average of your 5 closest friends you spend the most time with. Evaluate your circles in the previous year, did they help or hamper your progress? Then revise where necessary, it matters! TEAM: Together Everyone Achieves More  Tip #7 A better approach Ask yourself, how can I do this better? Innovate! Permit yourself to succeed in those areas. By working in the area of your strengths, your talents, and gifts you can master your craft with ease.  Tip #8 Fail fast! Hey! Don’t be afraid to fail. Feel the fear and do it! Face your fears. Things may not turn out as you planned but don’t give up, learn from them. Get up anytime you fall and fight on! It’s all part of the growth process.  Tip #9 Stretch yourself! Don’t just do the easy and fun things to just get by, leave your comfort zone, exceed your limits, and break that barrier. Do the difficult task. Discipline yourself to succeed.  Tip #10 Write things down! Write your goals down and read them often. Revise them as when necessary. You must stay current; be updated on current trends around the world especially in your field. Read great materials, books, articles, etc.  Tip #11 ACT! Action that Creates Transformation. There are lots of talkers around, but don’t be one of them, be a doer, a goal chaser, a dream maker. Act Now!!! Just, make it happen!  Tip #12 Results Be productivity minded not activity-filled. So many things will call for your time and attention but follow your heart. Stick to plans. FOCUS!  Tip #13 Take a Step at a Time Do the work that matters. Decide to do something daily that pushes you towards the realization of your ultimate goal, dream.  Tip #14 Be purposeful! Listen to your heart, your guts, your internal voice. Let whatever you do be a product of your own decision and conviction because it’s your dream and your life. Be responsible!  Tip #15 Assessment! Review your goals frequently to ensure that you are on the right track. Cut down every unproductive activity, prune and manure those that need nurturing and forge ahead with confidence.  Tip #16 Enjoy the journey In the process of pursuing your various endeavors in life, never forget to enjoy the seemingly small achievements. Enjoy the journey, don’t be fixated on the results. Smell the roses along the way, savor the little pleasures of life. Tip #17 Be thankful Life will through you many surprises, both good and bad, however, never overlook the good things and people that come your way. Genuinely appreciate the kindness you receive and the goodies. Things may all not turn out good as desired but just learn to develop a grateful attitude. It makes a big difference. Tip #18 Take Chances Life will not offer you what you desire on a silver platter. You must be willing to take the plunge and dive in. Try out new things. Experiment and explore. The more chances you take the luckier you become. To make the best out of any given situation demands your full preparation and commitment. Go for it! Tip #19 Keep investing in yourself. You should endeavor to stay on top of your game. Constantly learning, unlearning and relearning. Invest in buildings your brand, grow […]

A nationally known writer, speaker, and publisher in alternative spirituality, MITCH HOROWITZ is the author of “One Simple Idea: How Positive Thinking Reshaped Modern Life” and “Occult America,” winner of the 2010 PEN Oakland/ Josephine Miles Award for literary excellence. He is vice-president and editor-in-chief at Tarcher/Penguin, the division of Penguin books dedicated to metaphysical literature. Favorite Success Quote “Persistence” Key Points 1. Just Persist If you are struggling in life be it in your finances, relationships, or sense of meaning in life, just persist. Nothing good ever comes from people who can give up. You have to be willing to take the hits and keep on moving, to put in the work whenever everyone else parties, to put your nose to the grindstone while others sleep. If you can persist and keep going, success will come, it may take years, but if you put in the work and push through the hard times, you will succeed in the end. 2. Don’t Ask How, Just Why If you have to ask “how” odds are that you don’t really want to do something. If you came across a wild bear and had to get away, you wouldn’t ask how to get out of the way, you would just do it! And the same is true of success. If you really want to do something and have a strong why, then you will be able to figure out the how no matter what. 3. You Have Nothing But Your Word We have all heard that a man has nothing but his word. And as cliche as it may sound, this is true. You have nothing but your word. If you cannot be trusted, if you have no integrity with others and yourself, then what do you really have to offer the world? Nothing. You have to be a man of your word, take your word and your integrity more seriously than you take your job, your relationships, your passions or anything because your word is the only measure of a man.

Jerald shares the many lessons he learned from surviving falling off a cliff, watching his wife bleed-out, and dealing with a sudden job loss.https://tamarakanderson.com/jerald-simon-falling-off-a-cliff-job-loss-and-possible-death-of-a-spouse/Wisdom and Lessons from Jerald SimonAbout Jerald SimonHusband to Zanny, and a father to his wonderful children.Founder of Music Motivation®Composer of 10 Music Albums, 4 EP’s and dozens of piano booksAuthor of 4 motivation and self-help books (see links below)Music mentor and piano teacherHe loves music, teaching, speaking, performing, playing sports, exercising, reading, writing poetry and self help books, and gardening.Lessons from Falling off a CliffWhen we fall down, we get back up!Look to God in moments of darkness. Keep the faith.Life is precious. It is a gift, it should be cherished.“Focus intently on what matters most…we all need to continually have reminders and even wake-up calls that help us refocus our energy into the best life has to offer.”Power of prayer: The doctors believed that I would not make it, but there were so many people praying on my behalf. It was a miracle. When bullied due to seizures during recovery–Jerald made a choice as an 8-year-old that “Every will be a new day regardless of what had happened in the past. Every day I will start fresh. I’m not going to let name-calling or my problems or experiences hold me back.”Layers of barbed wire stopped fall at intervals and saved his life–sometimes it is the hard things we hit that save us in the end.Read Jerald’s blog about falling off the cliff here.Lessons from Almost Losing WifeJerald went through the emotions of sadness, fear and grief for himself and for his childrenAt times of deepest loss it is vital to turn to God the most because you feel as if part of you is gone, and only He can fill that hole–eventually. There is a difference between “ritual” prayers and heartfelt prayers and “During dark days and difficult times, that is when your prayers become so sincere as if you are really speaking personally to God.”God answered with peace. “I knew that everything would be okay, I just didn’t know what okay meant.”Jerald explained that sometimes we are so focused on what we want that it is a bit like looking through a straw, and then God removes the straw our understanding is heightened, and we understand an eternal perspective–to think and see things with an enlarged capacity. This experience with God helped him better appreciate God’s will vs. his will.“If I focus on what God wants me to do, if I put Him first–whatever happens I know the right thing will happen.”“We can find the good even in the bad. There is always light even in the darkest area. There is a faint light that we can look to.”There is greatness within everyone. There is goodness. If you look for the best you will find it, whether it’s finding it in a person or a situation or a problem. If you focus on that good, then it will help you to feel better about your situation.”A good prayer in hard times is, “Help me find the good in this.”Lessons from Job LossAs a provider, new home owner, and soon to be father Jerald was devastated.Feelings of inadequacy and failure crept in.Prayed to God, and asked, “What would you have me do?”He decided to turn from teaching piano part-time to doing it full-time.At first it was a struggle, but looking back it was the best thing that could have happened to me.A year later, he wrote his first piano book, and then he wrote another and composed CDs (see links below to view piano books and free sheet music)If you are in a dark place, perhaps it will put you on a trajectory that will lead you to the best place for you.Sometimes we look at a problem and we think it is the worst, most terrible problem…but we don’t realize that it is taking us from our course and putting us on an even better path.Find out what God wants you to do! Ask these questions:Who am I and what do you want me to be? Who should I be?What should I be doing? What should I be learning? What new skills should I learn? What do I envision in the future? What would my future perfect life look like? Then, get out a blank piece of paper and write down the answers and what you envision for your life and where you want to be and what you want to do. Create your life plan–places you want to go, experiences you want to have, etc.Doing this pushes you to have hope in the future–then mark the steps backwards to know how to get there.Writing your life mission and goals can give you hope and something to aim for. This process is outlined in Jerald’s book “Who Are You?”Bonus Tips“I think everyone has a purpose in life. They may not understand what their individual purpose is, but everyone has a mission that only they can fulfill.”There is so much competition in life. We are trying to compete against others instead of bringing out the best in others and the best in ourselves. The, “What’s in it for me?” attitude brings a narrow view of life and prevents people from living the lives they should. When you focus only on yourself and your needs, you live life in a spiral that circles inward and gets smaller and smaller. When you focus on others, you begin in the center and you spiral outwards and your circle grows. This builds a sphere of influence/support network for when you fall. We aren’t meant to go through life on our own.Ask: How can I bless and help and serve others?Story of looking the most worthless person in the world–found that everyone has worth regardless of where they have been.Just as we can be blessed by serving others, we can blessed by others serving us.“There are times when we will help and there will be times when we need all the help we can get and we shouldn’t be afraid to ask. Share your experiences and open up with others.”“It’s okay to ask for help, and it’s okay to help people, and it is okay to be helped by others. It’s not a weakness. It’s not a failure. I believe that failure is a just a stepping stone. There is no such thing as failure–it’s just another stepping stone to help us figure out and get a stronger footing so we can step in the right direction.”We are not perfect–none of us will live a perfect life. We’re all in this together.Connect with Jerald and Links Mentionedhttp://musicmotivation.com/Jerald’s Music is on iTunes and AmazonListen to his music: Spotify, PandoraFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jeraldmarcsimonInstagram: @jeraldsimonJerald has also filmed hundreds of piano lesson video tutorials on his YouTube page youtube.com/jeraldsimon

Over the last week, there have been several stories published about why you should stop using a debit card. When you present your card in person, the merchant is protected. But when you shop online the liability moves from the banks to the merchant. The MRC reports that now over 8 in 10 cards have been compromised. If you carry 5 cards, crooks have the goods on 4 and may get around to using them. That exposure includes debit cards, enabling the criminal to strip the funds out of your checking account, leaving you to fight with your bank to get that money back, which is becoming increasingly more difficult. A special warning for small to midsize businesses. Recent press recounts a bust-out by a payroll company. Once this company had a healthy roster of clients, they vanished in the night stealing $35M. A crooked company could destroy your business and/or employees. Ask: How are payrolls protected? What insurance do you have? How do I know I can trust you? Ask these questions before you choose a company that may leave you, your company and workers high and dry.  Renting apartments and hotels has not been a bargain in recent years. Apartment rates have been going up since 2011. Hotel rates have risen since 2012.  Both sectors have been building like crazy. There's an enormous stream of apartments coming online leading to oversupply and better deals. The hotel sector has been overbuilt at a frenzied pace, even as business travel is slowing.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Jena is a wife, mother, serial entrepreneur, love-of-all-things business, a brand specialist, an artist, a numbers-gal, a coach, and committed to eradicating unrealized human potential. After attending college at age 16, Jena took up studying accounting and even though numbers came easy to her, she got bored. So “creative” Jena stepped in and went on to study fashion design. Then numbers Jena and creative Jena collide with “business savvy” Jena and all end up in corporate America as a controller. After spending 8 years as a controller, Jena decided to take the leap into entrepreneurship, in which she always had an interest in. She took out a loan and bought a pre-existing shop in her area of expertise, fashion. But before she knew it she was 700,000 in debt and had to file BK. Cue in BRAVE Jena… When most people would have thrown in the towel, Jena picked up the pieces, brushed herself off and went on to become a successful entrepreneur who is now helping others find their own inner-brave and their unrealized potential. How did she do it? Setbacks are part of the human experience. We all experience them and they often come in different forms - physical, relational, emotional. Setbacks can offer lots of opportunities for growth but you’ve got to be open to seeing them in order to benefit. How we recover from a setback is often determined by our outlook and willingness to shift perspective.   LESSONS: Setbacks can offer opportunities for growth and change. When you experience a setback, give yourself permission to reflect on what brought you there in the first place. Ask: How did I get there? Allow a setback to give you space for pause so that you may benefit from slowing down and being still. Remember that a setback gives you a chance to shift course and try something new. This is quite an emotional post for me.   I’m sitting in a hotel room in San Diego. It’s the hotel where we've been doing an event for the ClickFunnels ‘Two Comma Club’ Coaching Program. It’s been an intense few days - loads of fun, but extremely busy.   On Thursday and Friday, I had my own event.  On Sunday, I took a flight to San Diego and finished some big projects. Then on Monday night, I stayed up until 2am to complete the slides for my ‘Two Comma Club’ presentation on Tuesday.  It’s been event after event after event. Kinda crazy, but I really enjoy it.   Today, I’m sitting in my hotel room feeling tired. Tired, but incredibly grateful. I’m looking out over San Diego Bay and thinking about how much my life has changed. If you've been to San Diego you’ll know that the bay is beautiful - it’s absolutely amazing.  When I walked into my hotel room, I saw it had these windows all over the place and a fantastic view of the whole bay. I actually started crying - because only two years ago, I'd bootstrapped my way to San Diego to attend Funnel Hacking Live. And… it was THAT event that changed my life.   In the grand scheme of my lifetime - two years is no time at all. Seriously, I can hardly believe that two years ago my family struggled to afford anything more than the basics of life. Financially, things couldn't be more different now. However, more than the financial changes, I can't believe how much I've changed as a person. I can't believe all the things that have happened to me- and the lessons that I've learned.   From my room, with the amazing windows, I can see the hotel where the 2016 Funnel Hacking Live Event was held. It's right there between two of the buildings in front of me - that's why I cried. So many memories came flooding back.     You probably know the story of how I broke I was in 2016; I had a young family to support and seventeen failed businesses to my name. All of which doesn’t make you feel great. I had people depending on me, but I just couldn't get things to work out the way I wanted them to. I think most entrepreneurs have a similar story. It's not like you get taught this stuff in school. Most of us just kinda 'try it’ until we find out what works and what doesn't work. What sells and what doesn't sell. We go through a process of elimination. Man, but sometimes, it’s tough.   In March 2016, I was determined to get to Funnel Hacking Live. I didn't have enough money, so I’d decided that I’d adopt the entrepreneur's attitude that Robert Kiyosaki talks about. I decided to get resourceful, and get myself to Funnel Hacking Live anyway I could.'   “Never say you cannot afford something. That is a poor man’s attitude. Ask HOW to afford it.” -Robert Kiyosaki I knew that if I could just find a way to get to FHL, that my life would change. Looking back, I had no idea how much - but somehow, I knew that it was imperative for me to go. So I got resourceful and bartered funnel builds for a ticket, followed by flights and hotel rooms.   I was so pumped when I made it to FHL.  But even when I got there, things weren’t exactly easy. I didn't eat much - because I couldn't afford to. I cycled to the event on one of those city bikes. You know, those little street bikes. I literally took my luggage, put it over my shoulder, and while I was balancing it over my shoulder, I pedaled all the way around the bay to the event.  I didn't have much cash, and what little I did have, I wasn't gonna spend on a freakin' taxi.   Imagine how I feel today-   From my gorgeous hotel room with all the windows and the view of the bay, I can even see the hotel where I stayed in 2016.   The hotel that I didn’t barter enough for a bed in for my final night. The hotel where I spent a night sat in the lobby going over my FLH notes like they were gold dust because I didn’t have a room. Those notes meant everything to me- I didn’t want to forget anything I learned. I didn’t have a bed, but I felt rich and excited in so many other ways.   Last night, I stood at my hotel window watching the ships going out on the bay, and I got a bit introspective. I stood there for a long time thinking. Then suddenly, the thought came into my head, 'Man, how did this all happen? How did I go from a broke college student struggling to support his family to the Lead Funnel Builder at Clickfunnels, then to running a successful business with so many opportunities around me all the time?'   I felt a bit shell shocked- so I went for a walk around the pier, right out there, eating Haagen-Daz and talking to my wife about how it all happened. It's just fascinating for me to think through all the pieces that brought us here. And the more I started to think about it, the more I realized that:   'I don't think I'd actually be here if I'd had money to get to Funnel Hacking Live 2016.  I don't know that I would have treated everything that Russell said with so much conviction at that event - if I'd had the cash to get a taxi.'   Interesting, isn't it? That the pursuit of my dream to get to FHL is what actually opened the gateway for all these other cool things to happen.  That the pursuit of hard stuff is what got me to where I am now. It’s why it's all worked out. Let me explain... THE OBSTACLE IS THE WAY   In my office, I have a wall full of quotes that I use to inspire me and keep me on track. One of then is from Ryan Holiday (I totally recommend his books btw). Anyway, this particular quote has come to mean a lot to me. It kinda symbolizes my journey in so many ways. And when I talk to other successful entrepreneurs, they always have the same story.   'The obstacle is the way' - Ryan Holiday.   This is such a useful mantra to have in your life. For instance, every time I don't know what to do, I make an effort to think about where the blockage is- and it's always in the pursuit of solving the problem that I move forward. Everything else that I try to do is just an easy distraction. Each time I overcome an obstacles, not only does my business grow, but it also adds to my attractive character- which helps people to relate to me even more. In short, the path of the obstacle ALWAYS ends up being ‘the thing’ that I needed all along.   I don't know that I'd have been hired at ClickFunnels if I’d had the money to get to FHL. I wouldn't have ferociously built funnels for other companies in exchange for tickets, flights and hotel rooms. I learned ClickFunnels so freakin' well by not having the cash. I had no other option. Before I got my fourteen-day free Clickfunnels trial, I planned out an entire funnel to make sure that I could start building straight away. Then I kissed my wife goodbye and hid in a room for two weeks. I worked solidly because I needed paying customers before my trial was up. I learned at a ferocious, desperate pace because of this limitation.   When I saw an advert for Funnel Hacking Live, I knew that we didn't have the cash to get me there. I could have got all despondent, but instead, I decide to lean into the obstacle and get resourceful. I remember thinking: 'How can I make this work? I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna make it work.' It was this resourcefulness that gave me all the background, all the experience and all the stories that sold Russell on why I should be his guy.   So if you have some limitation right now,  if you have something that's standing in your way - whether it comes in the form of self-doubt or financial constraints - I want you to lean into it, get resourceful and find a way. Give yourself that gift.     PICKING YOUR OBSTACLE Obviously, you need to be careful that you don’t just select obstacles randomly. You need to consider the following points:   First of all figure out where you're trying to get to, and even if you don't have like a clear picture, just kind of a general idea what it is you're trying to go for is enough.   Secondly, make sure any obstacle you pick is ‘on purpose’ and will help you to achieve your goal - don’t get distracted by things that only give you an excuse to avoid the actual thing that you don’t want to do, i.e, ‘I think I’ll design a logo’- when what you really need to do is get visible and publish.   Thirdly, ask: Will overcoming this obstacle add to your attractive character/ story/ or hook?   Fourth, remember that attractive characters compete on differences. You're competing on you evolving your own self. LIVING YOUR HOOK   I remember biking to the first day of FHL with this distinct thought in my head:   'I’ve given so much to be here that’ll do whatever Russell tells me to do- except I will never publish.’   And funny enough, lo and behold, I go, I go to that very first day bright eyed, bushy tailed. I get to the event, and I'm like, 'Hey I'm here to learn, I'm here to execute and take action.’ Then literally, on the very first day, Russell stands up and tells everyone, ‘You’ve gotta start publishing like crazy!’ And I was like 'Crap! I don't wanna do that. Are you kidding me? That's the exact thing I said I didn't wanna do. I don't wanna do that. There's no way I'm gonna do this.'   I was so freakin' shy. Seriously, I got the 'nicest guy' in school award purely based on the fact that I hardly said anything. Inside I was a teenage rage machine, but nobody knew that because I didn't tell them. I just stayed quiet in my own little world. Not exactly premium podcasting material, you might be thinking?  Now with my podcasts combined, they're crossing 160 thousand downloads. It blows my mind. It's only been a year and a half.  Eighteen months of me practicing becoming the attractive character in front of you- rather than waiting to be perfect. I'd never have learned half the lessons I have if I'd waited until I was READY (ahem- maybe never) to start publishing. And that's one of the reasons I love and appreciate every one of you guys- because you've been with me on the journey. I have such a huge following, and it's because I didn't wait to be the expert or the guru to start publishing and you can relate to me with all my challenges and limitations. Even though I didn’t want to Idid it exactly as Russell said. Even though it didn't come naturally to me and it was the LAST THING I wanted to do at the time. It took me until around episode 85 to finally find my flow. Just imagine what would have happened if I'd given up before then!   What I'm trying to help you understand is that whatever your limitation is right now, whatever you've got to go through, just do it. Lean into it, not away from it. Don't pull back. These are the things that will create the crazy hooks that you can use as stories later on in your life and business. 'Completely broke college student goes to work at Russell Brunson’s side. He then leaves his secure nine to five in the best company ever to follow his dreams and make his own million dollar funnel.'       It's a good story, right? Or what about:   'Pathologically shy person, who hardly ever spoke, overcomes his fears of speaking in public and hits 160 thousand podcast downloads in only eighteen months.'   Sounds good, right?   I had to live both of those stories for them to actually become real hooks and mean anything.   When I coach, I notice that a lot of people aren't willing to live the crazy hook. It's not that they have a lack of things that could be amazing hooks, it's that they're not willing to live the path that makes the hook real. So I just want you to understand how key this concept is.   It's kinda like the 'Fit to Fat to Fit' guy. He was super fit, and nobody believed that his methods could help them lose weight. He just wasn’t believable. They thought: ‘Yeah, you’ve always been slim and healthy - it’s easy for you- but it won’t work for me.’  So to prove them wrong, he spent a lot of time overeating. He got really really overweight. He did it on purpose. Then he invested a whole bunch of time to get fit again-  just to prove that it was possible for anyone to lose weight using his methods. He was willing to live his hook.   Are you willing to live your hook? If you're selling yourself- or your expertise - and people are buying into YOU, then you've got to be willing to Live Your Hook. Those places in your life where you feel stuck, use them as a challenge. Come up with some crazy ridiculous way to get around it. That's your hook. Live that. Then be willing to document your journey along the way. Don’t worry about being perfect or getting everything right… Perfection doesn’t create an attractive character who people find it easy to love, follow, believe in… AND, eventually buy from. Leaning into my limitations meant that when I went to FHL, I was already an expert funnel builder. Two days later I'm sitting across from Russell Brunson being interviewed. Twenty minutes after that I got the job offer. Two days after that I graduate from college. Two days after that I was sitting next to Russell as his Funnel Building Assistant. The truth is that you can't always see the opportunities that are just around the corner...  Or what opportunities may come your way because you've faced an obstacle and pushed your limits...   During my interview with Russell, he asked me about my history with ClickFunnels.  I know that they checked out my ClickFunnels account hardcore to make sure that I was already a good builder. If my limitations hadn’t meant that I had to get good at building funnels fast, I wouldn’t have had an impressive portfolio to show him - and I probably wouldn’t have got the job.   The whole point of  writing this is that I want to challenge you to look at your limitations in a different light. Start seeing them as they way forward instead of something to be avoided. Use them as fuel to move forward, instead of a weight to hold you back. Remember: ‘The Obstacle is the WAY.   Thanks for reading. I have to go now as my wife is literally due to give birth any day soon. The event just ended and Dave was like “Hey man, do you just wanna fly home tonight?" And I was like "Yes. Absolutely in case she goes into labor.” So I am heading home right now. I'm packing up my bags, and I'm gone in just a few minutes. I’m actually gonna miss the flight unless I leave right now! Alright guys, talk to you later. Bye. Go kill it. You're an organist, a choir director, or other musician. Here are the top 8 things to do to get a church music job you love. This spring I did a survey of 268 church musicians and people who have hired them. I learned a lot about what makes a great job applicant. In this week's episode, Crawford and I dig into 8 highlights: Word of mouth is one of the best ways to find church music jobs. To find out more about a church, just call or email the search committee chair or another person connected with the church like the pastor. Seriously. Just call them already. Find out salary norms for your area. You can't negotiate well if you don't know what normal is. ALWAYS tailor your job application materials. Most job searches have fewer than 15 applicants and your application will almost certainly be read.Don't be afraid of interview questions about conflict. Every church has conflict and the hiring committee wants to know that you can work in a church setting. Personal questions are legal in the U.S. for church interviews. So think ahead about what you want to say about your faith, your family, and so on. Negotiate if you can. But not all churches are willing or even able to negotiate. Be decent and polite. And I know from the comments I've received from my 2015 blog post on the topic that lots of other people go through this at one point or another. This episode will help you to get clarity on what's really going on behind your aversion to social media (or networking, or speaking, or whatever) so you can either do things differently or do something else instead. This episode will be equally useful to you if it's not social media that's your problem, but networking or something else you've been hating in your business.   Listen to this episode    What You'll Learn What to do when you're sick of using social media What to do instead to market your business Questions to ask yourself to help you to get clarity on exactly what's going on How to reduce the noise of social media + notifications Things you might need to give yourself permission to do How to get help with social media (and I don't mean hiring a social media manager) Questions to Ask How do you actually feel about social media? What do you want to get out of using social media? Is it working? Are you getting results? What's actually going on? Are you trying to do too much? Are you trying to be everywhere? Do you dislike posting your stuff on social media, or do you dislike reading other people's stuff? Are you still playing the comparison game? Are you experiencing burnout or overwhelm? Are you naturally more of an offline marketer or networker? Is the social media just not your thing? Is it the wrong time of the month? (yes, seriously...but not in the way you're thinking) Is your business in transition? Is your life in transition? Are you simply on an inner journey or are you at a crossroads on your path? At The Preview Appointment -  Objective - Gain access, establish a relationship with &  continue to qualify the seller.  The Tour:  While walking through the property, take notes on the home’s features and benefits.  In a casual, yet deliberate manner, ask questions to determine what the situation is with this particular lead.  Greeting: Introduce yourself, hand them a business card and thank them for having you over to take a look at the house. (Notice, I say house a lot, not home. Why? Home is emotional, a house is not). Also, assure them you won’t be long which should send a message that you aren’t going to overstay your time and push them into listing w/you.  Create a casual conversation as you tour the house: Ask we walk through the house, I have a list of questions to ask you, do you mind if I take some notes? (They always will say ok, sure that’s fine)  This allows you to relax, just read your questions and take notes...they gave you permission).  Remind me, how many bedrooms/bathrooms? Square footage? Lot size? Year built? (get the answering/talking easy common questions)  Can you point out what you’ve done to improve the property since you’ve owned it?  So, when you sell the house, where are you moving to? Or You said when you sell the house you’re moving to ___...correct?  (How’d you happen to pick that area?)  If a buyer was looking to close in 30 days, would that pose any challenges for you?  Have you been successful selling other houses of yours in the past? I am always curious...what caused you to sell the house yourself vs. hiring a professional, like myself?  So, how’d you determine your sales price? (sourcing, valid or not) Zillow vs. CMA. Are you prepared to adjust your price down when working with a buyer?  I’m sure it won’t happen, if the house didn’t sell, what would you do? Would that be a problem? (must be sure to say this with the right tone of voice)  You know, this is really a nice property...are you sure you don’t just want to keep it? (giving it back to them tells you about their commitment to sell. Do they go along with it or immediately give it back to you?)  Before You Go - After gathering the general information, make your way back towards the front door. Before leaving, stop and ask…”Mr. Or Mrs. Seller, I have to ask...I know you’re planning to sell your home by owner.  However, if you actually felt you could sell for more money, a quicker sale with less hassles/liability and meet your timelines by hiring a powerful agent like myself...would you at least be open to considering it? (find out where they’re at, this will help flush out where they really stand)  How much time would you take before you would consider hiring someone, like myself for the job of selling your home? (Get a timeline to work towards) Two weeks, 30 days.  So, just to be sure I am understanding correctly...if you’re not able to (and I am sure you will) sell the house in 30 days, you’d then at least be open to having a meeting to discuss solutions and a fresh approach I can bring to the table to help you get to ___?  Follow-Up - Well, thank you for having me over to preview your house.  I will keep it in mind and see if any of the buyer leads we have could be a match.  In the meantime, I will check in with you ...say...maybe once every 5-7-10 days to see if you were successful in selling the house. (explain the only way you can keep accurate status of the house is to keep in touch with them. Time frame to f/u based on motivation/market conditions.  Now, do your follow up moving closer to that timeline established.  Each call ask “I know you mentioned 30 days and its been ___ so far...are you sure you don’t want to just go ahead and meet now? This way I can help you get to ____ by ____. LA/January.  Don’t forget it takes practice - I can’t stress it enough...P,P,P,P,P. Write the entry script out by hand 2-3 times per day. Chant the script out loud as fast as you can, 4-5 times a day. Roleplay at least 2-3 times a day, with the script in hand. You can do this as long as you are comfortable since you are always on the phone and the person selling their home can’t see you.   Keys To Success: Be willing to struggle a bit, before you become great: Like anything, it’s a process, and we have to accept being uncomfortable for a short time until we become comfortable. Everyone has to start somewhere; it’s a process we must be ok with and go through. The sooner you go through it, the sooner it is over.  Just do it.  Keep everything in perspective: Remember the goal for the year. At times you may feel like it’s not working. Don’t forget; this example is 6 sales over a 12 month period.  That means 359 days you didn’t have a sale from this source and that can mess with your head. Yet, you hit your goal!  Follow up, follow up, follow up - consistency is key with this source of leads. Our goal is to call at the very moment they throw in the towel. Don’t ever give up, until the y list or sell (and you confirm it) You will prove yourself through being consistent in your approach.  Draw a line in the sand and keep the process moving along. Ask “How much time are you planning to sell yourself before considering the option of hiring a professional, like myself/me for the job of selling your home? OR What would have to happen for you to consider hiring a powerful agent, (like me) for the job of selling your home? (The first question is time-based, and the other is condition based) They say “30 days” that is the timeline you are now moving towards. Don’t ever give up, the longer you hang in there, the higher odds you will have for conversion.

A battlefield evokes something from us. Gettysburg, San Jacinto, Normandy and others cause us to replay in our minds the famous battles that took place so many years before. We are taken back by the events and the history. Life is a battle. It is a strange and dangerous journey. The soul of man is an active battlefield that still engages in conflict with the enemy. No matter the age or stage in life, we never outgrow the battle. We are a target of an enemy that seeks to destroy. Bro. Hughes observes that life is alternately building and battling. Our life is a series of battles. How well we do in these battles determine the outcome. Sometimes what appears to be a small skirmish, becomes the turning point in a person's life. In our text, Bro. Hughes finds a proven strategy for winning the battles of life. There is no better case study of the battles of life than the life of Joseph. His life is both instructive and inspiring. He was a great dreamer. The world both loves and hates a dreamer. Joseph had to live through a nightmare in order to see his dream come to pass. How did Joseph stay true to his character, to his convictions and to his God in the face of the opposition he encountered? In Joseph's story we find drama, pressure, conflict, and pleasure. There was power, temptation and many other elements that the greats of literature use to compel their audience. Joseph was tempted by a woman. She tempted him relentlessly. In this story, we see a man who was steadfast in his resolve to keep himself and his reputation pure. In the moment of great temptation, Joseph left it behind for the promise of a greater destiny. In a moment, Joseph had a decision to make. A moment can make or break a life. If he had succumbed to the moment of pleasure, Joseph would jeopardized his entire future. Joseph faced great odds and stood to overcome. At this time, he was a young man. Daily the advances of this attractive woman must have worn upon him. She was Potifer's wife. She had power and influence. History tells us that women of this time, especially women of power, were very loose in their morals and that this was accepted. She flattered him. Flattery can make us do a lot of things. She also used the promise of promotion to entice him. Joseph was second to only Potifer and he knew it. The enemy will try to convince us that he can give us something that we already have. How did Joseph win this victory on this battlefield of temptation? The answer to that question are found in our text. The first anchor to Joseph's defense was that he took time to look around and see how blessed he was. Since the garden, the devil has tried to focus man on what he did NOT have rather than what he DID have. When the devil comes against us, the first thing he will try to blur is our vision of how blessed we are. We do not need whatever the enemy has to offer, because God is with us. Joseph was blessed. He was chief of all of Potifer's house. Potifer held nothing back. Joseph realized that God had put him in a place of blessing, and he was not willing to betray that trust. Potifer had trusted Joseph, and that was worth more to him than the moment of pleasure would bring. Joseph was thankful. He did not feel entitled to take any liberties with her, he was simply thankful for what he had. The second thing Joseph did was to look inside himself. Ask "How can I do this?" He knew that he did not have to compromise himself to gain an advantage. He chose to live by a higher standard. Joseph drew a line, and refused to move that line. The devil does not care about our lines. He will modify his attack to see if he can get us to move our line. Joseph refused to move his line. The third thing Joseph did, was that he looked to the future to see the outcome of what she was tempting him to do. He had no future with another man's wife. The time to look ahead and anticipate the future, is before it happens, not after. Joseph looked ahead and ask "where is this taking me?" The conclusion he came to was that it was taking him down a path of destruction. In Joseph's no was the clear ring of a made up mind. That decisive mind made the difference in the outcome of his life.
