MINI-SERIES: The Theology of Community Groups. While Stu is away, Joey joins Joel and Tim to chat about the Theology-Strategy-Practice of Community Groups...They kick things off with a discussion on Cantopop and Mandopop, as Joey shares his experience attending Eason Chan's Fear & Dreams concert. From there, they shift gears to explore small groups—how they have developed in churches and what their names reveal about their purpose. They consider the influence of the seeker-sensitive movement from churches like Willow Creek and Saddleback, as well as missional communities from the UK. The key question emerges: What are small groups actually forming? Is it about the activity itself, or something deeper? They then dive into the theology of community groups, questioning whether small groups are truly the only way for Christians to grow deeper in their faith. Joey draws from Colossians 2:6 to highlight the role of God's Word in spiritual growth, while Tim challenges the assumption that weekend church and midweek groups are the only effective pattern. If the gospel is inherently corporate, then mission and discipleship should go hand in hand. This leads into a discussion on Soul Revival's core values and how they influence small groups, starting with The Bible is the Word of God (Hebrews 4:12). Rather than treating Bible study like a book club, they emphasise that the same Spirit who inspired Scripture is alive in the hearts and minds of believers today. They also explore Prayer & Evangelism (Colossians 4:2) and Discipleship to Maturity (Matthew 28:19), emphasising how the smaller group setting creates space for deeper conversations that help people grow in Christ. Finally, they ask: Why might Christians hesitate to go deeper? Small groups act as a holy interruption to our weeks, encouraging accountability and fellowship. When people prioritse the time, they not only grow as disciples but also as friends. They conclude with another of Soul Revival's values—Worship as All of Life (Romans 12:1-2, Luke 9:23-24), reflecting on how meeting together regularly helps believers resist the patterns of the world and live out their faith more fully.00:00 Intro03:15 CULTURAL ARTEFACT: Eason Chan's Fear & Dreams tour08:45 Small groups and their name17:20 The theology of small groups28:10 Meeting together means something37:26 Growing deeper with others48:25 Worship as all of lifeDISCUSSED ON THIS EPISODEEason ChanMary's Chip Lunch:Episode 161Episode 162Seeker sensitive movementSoul Revival Church's valuesCONTACT USShock Absorber Email: joel@shockabsorber.com.auShock Absorber Website: shockabsorber.com.auSoul Revival Shop: soulrevival.shopCheck out what else Soul Revival is up to here

Desert Sand Feels Warm at Night visited us this week on "Hot Takes"! An astoundingly skilled and popular vaporwave artist, Desert was surely the people's choice for a guest, and he did not disappoint in the slightest as we discussed all manner of subjects like Desert's social habits, hands-on application of music theory with regards to production, and his experience playing ambient music live at Slushwave 2024. Growing up in a musical household and trained in audio engineering with classical music, Desert Sand Feels Warm at Night came on the scene in the late 2010's and has since released countless sample-free slushwave albums. He has collaborated with multiple other ambient and slushwave acts and even runs a label/collective called Hallworth Collective! I don't know if we've ever had so many enthusiastic questions locked and loaded for a guest, chatting about everything from Skelly's thoughts on curating one's own sense of style to Desert's experience discovering Telepath テレパシー能力者 and Private Suite Magazine. Desert Sand Feels Warm at Night spoke to so many topics, such as using Maltese for the titles in his new collaborative album with Days of Blue, cool shirts, and the Slushwave Social Club Discord server. Don't miss his extensive thoughts about Cantopop, his beard care routine, and a very special top three album recommendation session in the intermission by previous guest Drinkyourtears. On 30 December 2003, Cantopop singer Anita Mui passed away from cervical cancer, amid an outpouring of grief from her fans. Thirty years later, this disease is still the fourth most common cancer, and continues to kill one woman every two minutes. The World Health Organization has laid out a strategy to eliminate cervical cancer worldwide as a public health problem, where all countries reach an annual incidence rate of four cases per 100,000 women or less. But how is elimination possible, when HPV vaccination is still uneven, screening uptake is low, and there are barriers to accessing treatment, including gaps in insurance coverage? Professor Dr Woo Yin Ling, Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist from University Malaya Medical Centre, and Dr Murallitharan Munisamy, Managing Director of the National Cancer Society of Malaysia, join us discuss what Malaysia needs to prioritise to achieve the elimination agenda along with the rest of the world. Three new poems to share, each inspired by a song performed by Cantopop singer Anthony Wong during his recent concert series at Legacy Taipei. I was there both nights. In this episode, you'll hear a slice of the following songs: 下一站天國 >> 忘不了的你 >> 下世紀再嬉戲 >> Each juxtaposed by an English prose poem written by yours truly. The three songs left an impression. I took a tangent off of them and wrote the poems after I came back to Hong Kong. Sounds were taken from my iPhone 13 mini, a Christmas gift I got for myself. Anyways. This is Atom Alicia C. Cantopop is a contraction of Cantonese pop music mostly created by Hong Kong artists. It was phenomenal in the 1980s and 1990s when it almost dominated the Chinese pop music scene across the world. Although its popularity nowadays has declined, some golden oldies are just too classic to let go of and some argue that they will never get old even for generations to come. Denise Ho has been on Beijing's bad list since the lesbian Cantopop star came out in 2012, then her advocacy for democracy in Hong Kong and speech at the UN Human Rights Council in 2019 (excerpts included) increased the tensions, and now her association with an independent news website has led to her arrest! Black feminist theorist bell hooks leaves behind the challenge “Why Choose to Love?” and Professor Beverly Guy-Sheftall remembers her prolific friend (from “Democracy Now!”). And in NewsWrap: Senegal's legislature nixes tougher anti-queer laws, two tortured Tunisian gays seek sex crime repeal, the U.K. expands "Turing's Law" pardon eligibility, Israel opens surrogacy services to queer couples, a Taiwan court grants adoption rights to a gay co-dad, Cuba proposes a new pro-marriage equality Family Code, India's major matchmaking site opens to LGBTQ hopefuls, and more international LGBTQ news reported this week by John Dyer V and Sarah Montague (produced by Brian DeShazor).

Welcome back. We hope you're staying healthy. This week the Nerds invited Dev-i-Boy on again. He'll be joining us for the next while.First up is a discussion about Indiana Jones 5. Can Indy swing himself back into relevance for a new generation? Not if COVID-19 has anything to say about it. Indiana Jones 5 has been pushed back again due to the pandemic. The Nerds are hoping Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf doesn't make another appearance as Indy's son, but we'd be ok with him appearing as a cannibal tribesman. This of course leads into a discussion on Disney's other properties, including the notorious Pirates of the Caribbean and Jungle Cruise. This looks like a rough year for Disney.Dev-i-Boy has heard that Russians are behind everyone's favourite YouTube channel, Five Minute Crafts. In a story reminiscent of bad Cold War fiction, Russian propaganda is slipped into innocuous seeming YouTube videos. Now we just need a team of teenagers to sneak into the secret Russian video studio lab and uncover their plot.Activision has pulled off a major win in court against the maker of the Humvee. Modern warfare needs modern weapons, and the US courts have ruled in favour of realism over licensing fees. Finally, DJ and Dev-i-Boy can't handle the knowledge. An Australian lizard joins the tiny group of reptiles that both lay eggs and give live birth. This revelation is too much for them to handle though, so we move on to the games of the week.Professor and DJ play Generation Zero, a game about Swedish battle mechs and robot dogs that want to kill you. It's buggy, but generally a good experience. Dev-i played LoZ: Wind Waker again but breaks into a new dimension in VR Chat. Of course, he picked an anime girl avatar. Of course. On to the usual shoutouts and remembrances, and DJ refuses to wrap up the show by performing Waterloo. You knew it was dangerous, but you let people go swimming anyway,” her character says, sobbing. “You knew all those things and still my boy is dead now, and there’s nothing you can do about it. My boy is dead.” Fierro reportedly had "objected to the profanity" of the scene's dialogue as originally drafted, and the director, Steven Spielberg, wanted dialogue that accorded with Fierro's "everywoman looks," so the scene's dialogue was rewritten the day before it was filmed. Fierro went on to reprise her role in 1987’s subpar “Jaws: The Revenge” opposite Michael Caine. She died from COVID-19 at the age of 91. Remembrances6 April 1520 – Raphael - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raphael Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His work is admired for its clarity of form, ease of composition, and visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. Many of his works are found in the Vatican Palace, where the frescoed Raphael Rooms were the central, and the largest, work of his career. The best known work is The School of Athens in the Vatican Stanza della Segnatura. After his early years in Rome, much of his work was executed by his workshop from his drawings, with considerable loss of quality. He was extremely influential in his lifetime, though outside Rome his work was mostly known from his collaborative printmaking. His career falls naturally into three phases and three styles, first described by Giorgio Vasari: his early years in Umbria, then a period of about four years (1504–1508) absorbing the artistic traditions of Florence, followed by his last hectic and triumphant twelve years in Rome, working for two Popes and their close associates. He died from fever at the age of 37 in Rome, Papal States.6 April 1944 - Rose O'Neill - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rose_O%27NeillRose Cecil O'Neill, American cartoonist, illustrator, artist, and writer. She built a successful career as a magazine and book illustrator and, at a young age, became the best-known and highest- paid female commercial illustrator in the United States. O' Neill earned a fortune and international fame by creating the Kewpie, the most widely known cartoon character until Mickey Mouse. Her Kewpie cartoons, which made their debut in a 1909 issue of Ladies' Home Journal, were later manufactured as bisque dolls in 1912 by J. D. Kestner, a German toy company, followed by composition material and celluloid versions. The dolls were wildly popular in the early twentieth century and are considered to be one of the first mass-marketed toys in the United States. Their name, "Kewpie", derives from Cupid, the Roman god of love. According to O'Neill, she became obsessed with the idea of the cherubic characters, to the point that she had dreams about them: "I thought about the Kewpies so much that I had a dream about them where they were all doing acrobatic pranks on the coverlet of my bed. One sat in my hand." She described them as "a sort of little round fairy whose one idea is to teach people to be merry and kind at the same time". O'Neill also wrote several novels and books of poetry, and was active in the women's suffrage movement. She was for a time the highest-paid female illustrator in the world upon the success of the Kewpie dolls. She died from heart failure at the age of 69 in Springfield, Missouri. 6 April 2003 - Anita Borg - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anita_Borg American computer scientist. She founded the Institute for Women and Technology and the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing. In 1997, Borg founded the Institute for Women and Technology (now the Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology). Two important goals behind the founding of the organization were to increase the representation of women in technical fields and to enable the creation of more technology by women. The Institute was created to be an experimental R&D organization focusing on increasing the impact of women on technology and increasing the impact of technology on the world's women. It ran a variety of programs to increase the role of technology, build the pipeline of technical women, and ensure that women's voices affected technological developments. Borg passionately believed in working for greater representation of technical women. Her goal was to have 50% representation for women in computing by 2020. She strove for technical fields to be places where women would be equally represented at all levels of the pipeline, and where women could impact, and benefit from, technology. She died from a brain tumour at the age of 54 in Sonoma, California. Famous Birthdays6 April 1958 - Graeme Base - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graeme_BaseAuthor and artist of picture books. Events of Interest 6 April 1896 – In Athens, the opening of the first modern Olympic Games is celebrated, 1,500 years after the original games are banned by Roman emperor Theodosius I. - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/first-modern-olympic-gamesOn April 6, 1896, the Olympic Games, a long-lost tradition of ancient Greece, are reborn in Athens 1,500 years after being banned by Roman Emperor Theodosius I. At the opening of the Athens Games, King Georgios I of Greece and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed athletes from 13 nations to the international competition. In Athens, 280 participants from 13 nations competed in 43 events, covering track-and-field, swimming, gymnastics, cycling, wrestling, weightlifting, fencing, shooting, and tennis. All the competitors were men, and a few of the entrants were tourists who stumbled upon the Games and could sign up. The track-and-field events were held at the Panathenaic Stadium, which was originally built in 330 B.C. and restored for the 1896 Games. Americans won nine out of 12 of these events. The 1896 Olympics also featured the first marathon competition, which followed the 25-mile route run by a Greek soldier who brought news of a victory over the Persians from Marathon to Athens in 490 B.C. In 1924, the marathon was standardized at 26 miles and 385 yards. Appropriately, a Greek, Spyridon Louis, won the first marathon at the 1896 Athens Games.6 April 1909 - Robert Peary and Matthew Henson become the first people to reach the North Pole; Peary's claim has been disputed because of failings in his navigational ability. - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/pearys-expedition-reaches-north-poleOn April 6, 1909, American explorer Robert Peary accomplishes a long elusive dream, when he, assistant Matthew Henson and four Eskimos reach what they determine to be the North Pole. Decades after Peary’s death, however, navigational errors in his travel log surfaced, placing the expedition in all probability a few miles short of its goal. In 1908, the pair travelled to Ellesmere Island by ship and in 1909 raced across hundreds of miles of ice to reach what they calculated as latitude 90 degrees north on April 6, 1909. Although their achievement was widely acclaimed, Dr. Frederick A. Cook challenged their distinction of being the first to reach the North Pole. A former associate of Peary, Cook claimed he had already reached the pole by dogsled the previous year. A major controversy followed, and in 1911 the U.S. Congress formally recognized Peary’s claim. In recent years, further studies of the conflicting claims suggest that neither expedition reached the exact North Pole, but that Peary and Henson came far closer, falling perhaps 30 miles short. On May 3, 1952, U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Joseph O. Fletcher of Oklahoma stepped out of a plane and walked to the precise location of the North Pole, the first person to undisputedly do so.6 April 1917 - Americans declares war on Germany - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/america-enters-world-war-iTwo days after the U.S. Senate voted 82 to 6 to declare war against Germany, the U.S. House of Representatives endorses the declaration by a vote of 373 to 50, and America formally enters World War I. Apart from an Anglophile element urging early support for the British and an anti-Tsarist element sympathising with Germany's war against Russia, US public opinion reflected that of the president: the sentiment for neutrality was particularly strong among Irish Americans, German Americans, and Scandinavian Americans, as well as among church leaders and among women in general. On the other hand, even before World War I had broken out, American opinion had been overall more negative toward Germany than toward any other country in Europe. Over time, especially after reports of atrocities in Belgium in 1914 and following the sinking of the passenger liner RMS Lusitania in 1915, American citizens increasingly came to see Germany as the aggressor in Europe. While the country was at peace, American banks made huge loans to Britain and France, which were used mainly to buy munitions, raw materials, and food from across the Atlantic. Wilson made minimal preparations for a land war but he did authorise a major ship-building program for the United States Navy. The president was narrowly re-elected in 1916 on an anti-war ticket.6 April 1974 - The Swedish pop band ABBA wins the Eurovision Song Contest with the song "Waterloo", launching their international career. - https://www.mylifetime.com/she-did-that/april-6-1974-abba-won-the-eurovision-song-contest-for-waterloo-launching-their-international-careerSongwriters and musicians Ulvaeus and Andersson first met in 1966. However, it was in 1969 when the seeds of the soon-to-be Swedish supergroup were planted when Björn met his fiancée, Fältskog, and Benny met his fiancée, Lyngstad. Ulvaeus and Andersson knew how to write contagious pop hits. However, Fältskog and Lyngstad’s beautiful harmonies were integral to the global chart-topping ABBA sound. After “Waterloo” won the 19th edition of the Eurovision song competition, the winning tune reached the No. 1 spot on the UK chart and became a top ten hit in the US on the Billboard Hot 100. “Waterloo” sold six million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling singles of all time.Follow us on Facebook - Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/ - Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamated Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrS iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094 RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General Enquiries Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

“For this very small city of 7 million people being able to stand up to this ruthless machine, for sure it is inspiring to other people in different countries.”- Denise Ho- - - - -Hong Kong has a complicated political history, which must be understood to understand the current protests. For 156 years, Hong Kong was under British rule, but on June 1st 1997, it was returned to Chinese sovereignty. As part of the handover negotiations, it was agreed that Hong Kong would operate under ’one country, two systems', a principal outlined in The Basic Law. The treaty agreed between China and Britain would maintain the rights and freedoms of the people of Hong Kong for 50 years. In 2014, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress proposed reforms to the Hong Kong electoral system. These proposed changes were seen by many as oppressive and allow the pre-screening of political candidates by the Chinese Communist Party. As such, the people of Hong Kong recognised the changes as anti-democratic and a clear indication that Hong Kong had failed to achieve universal suffrage, outlined under Basic Law.What followed was a series of protests, often referred to as the Umbrella Revolution. Starting in September 2014 protesters demonstrated outside government buildings and brought the city to a standstill by occupying many key intersections which remained closed to traffic for 77 days. Police intervened, and their use of excessive force, tear gas and the brutality shown to protesters led to a backlash from the citizens and escalating tensions.Denise Ho, a Cantopop star and human rights activist, was an active supporter of the Umbrella Revolution. During the protests, Denise and a group of high profile demonstrators were arrested. For this and her action of speaking out against the Chinese authoritarian regime, the Chinese government blacklisted Denise. In 2019, Hong Kong again witnessed mass protests in response to the Hong Kong governments extradition bill. Extradition from Hong Kong to mainland China would put residents at risk of facing the Chinese justice system and thus a tool to suppress political opposition.Following months of violent protests, the Chinese government formally withdrew the Extradition Bill on October 23rd. While this appeared to outsiders as a victory for the people of Hong Kong, demonstrations are ongoing as protestors are seeking further protection of their rights:- The government to withdraw the use of the word "riot" instead of protest- Amnesty for protesters- An independent commission enquiry into police brutality- Universal suffrageIn this interview, I speak to Denise Ho, a singer, LGBTQI activist and pro-democracy campaigner from Hong Hong. For some years, Denise Ho was one of the most popular singers in Asia. A Hong Kong native, she performed the style known as Cantopop in mainland China and in foreign countries with Chinese émigré populations. But, as Ho told the staff writer Jiayang Fan, she began to have qualms about the often-saccharine content of the genre. “Is that all? Is that all I can do with my songs, my career—just for personal wealth, and all that?” She was one of the first stars in China to come out as a lesbian, which the government took in stride; but, when she took part in political demonstrations in Hong Kong, she was arrested on television and detained. Authorities began to cancel her concerts, and to block access to her work on the Internet in China. Her endorsements followed suit. “I expected to be banned from China, but I wasn’t expecting the government to react to it in such a way,” she says. “The main goal is to silence everyone—especially the younger generations—with fear.” Now Denise Ho is trying to rebuild her career as something unfamiliar in China: an underground protest singer. Plus: Kai-Fu Lee on China’s tech sector and the challenge it poses to Silicon Valley; and the longtime staff writer Calvin Trillin, who puts his happy marriage onstage in a new play, “About Alice.” “This play certainly would have failed Drama 101 . . . But you have to write about what you know.”

“Infernal Affairs” may have won seven out of the sixteen Hong Kong Film Awards it was nominated for in 2002, including beating Zhang Yimou's “Hero” as Best Film, but the majority of Americans probably didn't hear of it until it was remade by Martin Scorsese four years later as “The Departed.” And while that's a shame that it took so many people so long to discover this 2002 Hong Kong gem by directors Andrew Lau and Alan Mak, it's great that they did discover it. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our Movies & Their Remakes series with Lau's and Mak's crime thriller “Infernal Affairs.” We talk about the title, why it's silly to overexplain the English title, what the original Chinese title “The Unceasing Path” means and things you can read about the film from it. We discuss the actors, primarily Tony Leung and Andy Lau (not related to the director), and how so many of the actors here are performers in other capacities. (Cantopop, anyone?) We chat about the almost pathetic role the women play in this version of the story. And we hit on the taut storytelling style exhibited here which lets us really focus on the struggle the two main characters go through. It's a wonderful film and definitely worth watching regardless of whether you've seen “The Departed” or not. So give it a shot then tune in!
