What I publicly said at the time was, basically: 1. We should remember the possibility that apparent levitation is from ferromagnetism or paramagnetism. Iron filings can stand up on a magnet, and pyrolytic graphite can float over a strong magnet. 2. If we consider some known high-temperature superconductors: YBCO has flat sheets of copper oxide, and superconductivity happens along those planes. The copper in that has high positive charge density, comparable to aluminum atoms in alumina, which gives strong bonding to the oxygen. H3S (paper) has unusually strong bonds between the sulfur and hydrogen, which only form because the atoms are pressed into each other with enough pressure to substantially compress liquid water. Superconductivity comes from flow of Cooper pairs, and the electron-phonon interaction must be stronger than random thermal movement. LK-99 doesn't seem to have any reason to have exceptionally strong such interactions. (Yes, I'm simplifying, you have to consider phonon bandgaps, but the point is at least directionally correct.) 1. The focus on "room-temperature" superconductivity is a bit silly. Even with systems using liquid nitrogen cooling, the superconducting wires are much more expensive than the cooling. What's really needed for superconductors to be practical is cheaper superconducting wires, not higher-temperature ones. At the time, I found the unusual amount of public interest a bit bemusing. There have been various claims of near-room-temp superconductivity, but none of them attracted as much public attention as LK-99. A few months earlier, Ranga Dias published a paper claiming room-temperature superconductivity; he's now up to 5 retractions. What was different about LK-99? That was supposedly superconducting at ambient pressure, which makes it more practical, but also means less specialized equipment is needed to replicate it - or claim to replicate it. LK-99 had a video that appealed to people. There were also a few social conditions that I think were important: 1. It had been a while since that last major excitement about fake science news. After some big story that turns out to be wrong, people are more skeptical of science stories in every field for a while, and then things gradually go back to a baseline. (That's how things were after eg the "arsenic in DNA" story, which didn't make sense either: arsenate esters aren't stable enough for DNA.) I understand the heuristic that people applied but the way it's applied here doesn't really make sense. 2. Misleading short videos + social media is a combination that hadn't really been applied to bad science stories before. 3. I think the atmosphere at the time had a lot of demand for ammunition in a wider techno-optimist vs techno-pessimist conflict. ("Room-temperature superconductors and Boom Technology making practical supersonic aircraft! We're so back!") I think those overall conditions caused the LK-99 story to be self-amplifying, because: Several twitter accounts made fake videos showing "replication" of LK-99 superconductivity, because it was just good social media strategy. I think iris_IGB is still up a lot of followers overall. Don't hate the player, hate the game, I guess. Some theorists jumped on the story by finding "theoretical justifications" because it seemed like a net career positive, statistically speaking. In many cases, whether the social status of a scientific theory is amplified or diminished over time seems to depend more on the social environment than on whether it's true. At the beginning of 2023 Bulgaria gained access to Turkey's terminals and gas transmission network under a long-term deal that would help the country replace supplies once provided by Russia. This had come to a surprise to some in Athens, as Greece and Bulgaria have accelerated their energy cooperation through projects like the IGB natural gas pipeline and the FSRU in Alexandroupolis. It appears Bulgaria is now looking to deepen its ties with Turkey, with some raising the prospect of reviving a version of the Nabucco plan, which was disregarded in 2013 in favor of TAP. Phát hiện đường ống dẫn khí đốt Nord Stream 1 và 2 bị phá hoại diễn ra đúng vào lúc Ba Lan và Bulgari quay lưng lại với Nga. Các vụ tấn công này không tạo nên một « cơn sốt về khí đốt » nhưng thách thức châu Âu muốn tìm các nguồn cung cấp khác thay thế cho Nga và là một thách thức bảo đảm an ninh cho các « cơ sở hạ tầng thiết yếu » của một quốc gia. Ngày 27/09/2022 khánh thành đường ống dẫn khí đốt Baltic Pipe tại Goleniow-Ba Lan, cùng với đồng cấp Đan Mạch và bộ trưởng Năng Lượng Na Uy, trong cương vị chủ nhà, thủ tướng Mateuz Morawiecki tuyên bố : « Thời kỳ mà chúng ta bị khí đốt của Nga thống trị đã qua. Thời kỳ mà nước Nga dùng năng lượng để bắt chẹt, để đe dọa và tống tiền chúng ta đã lùi vào quá khứ ! » Baltic Pipe bắt đầu hoạt động và có công suất 10 tỷ mét khối một năm đưa khí đốt của Na Uy đến tận Ba Lan qua lãnh thổ Đan Mạch. Đây là một trong số nhiều công trình do Liên Hiệp Châu Âu đồng tài trợ nhằm « đa dạng hóa các nguồn cung cấp năng lượng » cho các thành viên trong khối. Vacxava là một trong những khách hàng đầu tiên bị Nga cắt nguồn cung cấp khí đốt từ khi Matxcơva đưa quân xâm chiếm Ukraina. Năm ngoái, Ba Lan lệ thuộc đến gần 50 % vào năng lượng của Nga nhưng với Baltic Pipe, từ nay đến 2024, khí đốt của Na Uy hoàn toàn có thể lấp vào chỗ trống mà các tập đoàn dầu khí của Nga để lại. Đến ngày 01/10/2022 nhờ IGB, đường ống kết nối Hy Lạp với Bulgari, đến lượt một thành viên khác của Liên Âu vốn cũng lệ thuộc rất nhiều vào năng lượng của Nga là Sofia đã chuyển sang mua khí đốt của Azerbaijan. Chủ tịch Ủy Ban Châu Âu, Ursula Von der Leyen không ngần ngại tuyên bố « một thời đại mới đang mở ra cho Bulgari và Đông Nam Âu » đường ống nối liền Hy Lạp với Bulgari đồng nghĩa với « tự do,  giải phóng khu vực này khỏi vòng kềm tỏa về năng lượng Nga ». Từ nay đến 2027, hàng năm Azerbaijan cung cấp tối thiểu 20 triệu mét khối cho Liên Âu. Nga nhắc nhở vẫn là tâm điểm của thị trường năng lượng thế giới Liên Hiệp Châu Âu tưởng chừng tìm được hai ngõ thoát hiểm để giải tỏa bớt áp lực về năng lượng, tách rời khỏi khí đốt của các nhà cung cấp Nga, thì tại biển Baltic, hai đường ống dẫn đưa khí đốt của Nga sang châu Âu là Nord Stream 1 và 2 đã bị nổ. Không một ai tin rằng đây là một sự cố kỹ thuật hay một tai nạn. Thủ phạm các vụ phá hoại này là ai và họ theo đuổi những mục đích gì vào lúc mà giá năng lượng trên thế giới đã tăng cao ? Là khách hàng lớn nhất của Nga Liên Âu đứng trước nguy cơ cố máy công nghiệp bị tê liệt vì thiếu hụt năng lượng cho mùa đông sắp tới. Ngay sau các vụ nổ giá khí đốt trên thị trường quốc tế tăng vợt hơn 12 % trong phiên giao dịch hôm 28/09/2022 Giá một megawatt/h vượt ngưỡng 200 đô la. Nhưng theo giới quan sát, đây là mức giá còn thấp hơn nhiều so với đỉnh điểm hơn 315 đô la một megawatt/h của hồi tháng 8/2022. Nói cách khác, các vụ phá hoại hai đường ống Nord Stream đã không gây nên một « cơn sốt » trên thị trường và đã không là cơ hội cho các nhà sản xuất kiếm lời. Nhưng tác động về mặt môi trường thì lại rất tai hại : dù không hoạt động nhưng Nord Stream 1 và 2 vẫn chứa đầy khí và 90 % trong số đó là khí metan. Giới chuyên gia thẩm định các vụ nổ hồi đầu tuần trước để thất thoát khoảng 115.000 tấn metan, tương đương với 3 triệu tấn khí thải carbon ra bầu khí quyển trong vỏn vẹn vài ngày (tức là cho đến khi các nước Bắc Âu thông báo đã bịt được các vụ rò rỉ khí đốt). Để so sánh 3 triệu tấn CO2 là mức thải khí của cả Paris và vùng phụ cận trong một năm. Ngoài tác động tai hại đối với môi trường, loạt các vụ phá hoại hai đường ống ở Bắc Âu lần này là một thách thức về mặt an ninh. Emmanuel Dupuy cố vấn về an ninh quốc phòng và chủ tịch Viện nghiên cứu IPSE của châu Âu trả lời đài truyền hình Pháp France 5 giải thích : « Cả Nord Stream 1 và 2 hiện tại đều không hoạt động : Nord Stream 2 hoàn tất trước ngày Nga lùa quân xâm chiếm Ukraina, nên thực sự chưa bao giờ đi vào hoạt động. Còn Nord Stream 1 thì đã ngừng cung cấp khí đốt cho châu Âu từ tháng 9 vừa rồi sau nhiều đợt tạm dừng để sửa chữa. Nord Stream 2 do một tổ hợp nhiều công ty quản lý. Gazprom tài trợ 50 % đường ống dài hơn 1.200 km này. Nửa còn lại do 5 tập đoàn năng lượng của châu Âu đảm nhiệm, hai trong số đó là các hãng Đức. Khi chiến tranh Ukraina khai mào, đương nhiên Nord Stream 2 coi như bị khai tử. Do vậy bất luận ai là thủ phạm các vụ phá hoại này, thì đây cũng là một hành động cảnh cáo rằng các đường ống dẫn khí đốt còn đang hoạt động để cung cấp năng lượng cho châu Âu đều có thể trở thành mục tiêu tấn công, kể cả đường ống ở phía Bắc Âu-như Baltic Pipe vừa được khánh thành để đưa khí đốt của Na Uy sang Ba Lan, hay các đường ống ở Nam Âu, đưa khí đốt của Algérie sang đến Ý chẳng hạn » MedGaz nối liền Algérie với Tây Ban Nha ; Poseidon đưa khí đốt trong vùng Đia Trung Hải sang đến Hy Lạp, TransMed xuất phát từ Algérie qua ngả Tunisia trước khi dùng tại Ý… đã hoạt động trong khu vực Nam Âu. Các đường ống của Nga bị « thất nghiệp » ? Từ khi chiến tranh Ukraina bùng nổ, Bruxelles trừng phạt kinh tế Nga, Matxcơva trả đũa khóa van dầu khí với các đối tác châu Âu thì từ Bulgari đến Ba Lan, và nhất là những nền kinh tế lớn nhất trong khối Liên Âu (Đức, Pháp, Ý) đã vội vã tìm các nguồn cung cấp thay thế : Algerie, Nigeria, Mozambic hay Namibia, rồi các nước trong khu vực ở Trung Á, các vương quốc trong vùng Vịnh liên tục tiếp các lãnh đạo châu Âu. Thị phần của các doanh nghiệp Nga bị thu hẹp lại trên thị trường châu Âu. hai dự án đầu tư lớn của Nga – chính xác hơn là của tập đoàn dầu khí Gazprom bị « vô hiệu hóa ».  Chẳng những thế, các nhà sản xuất khí hóa lỏng của Mỹ đã dễ dàng cắm rễ vào châu Âu, nhất là sau thỏa thuận giữa Bruxelles với Washington hồi tháng 4/2022. Tổng kim ngạch xuất khẩu khí hóa lỏng (LNG) của Mỹ sang châu Âu đã tăng lên gấp đôi trong tám tháng đầu năm 2022. Một trong những tác động phụ chiến tranh Ukraina gây nên là Nga đang nhường thị phần quan trọng nhất của mình cho Hoa Kỳ. Gazprom đầu tư gần 5 tỷ đô la (kinh phí chung là gần 10 tỷ) trong dự án đường ống dẫn khí đốt Nord Stream 2 để đưa khí đốt của Nga sang đến tận Lubmin, Đức. Cùng với Nord Stream 1 Nga sẽ cung cấp đến 110 tỷ mét khối/năm cho châu Âu. Sau khi đã vượt qua nhiều thử thách từ chính trị, đến kỹ thuật, những chống đối từ phía các nhà bảo vệ môi trường, Nord Stream 2 đã hoàn tất. Matxcơva xâm chiếm Ukraina, công sức của Gazprom và 5 đối tác châu Âu (Engie của Pháp, Uniper và Wintershall cua Đức, OMV của Áo, Shell của Anh và Hà Lan) như muốn bỏ bể : những ngày đầu năm 2022. Do vậy giới phân tích của Pháp cho rằng, các vụ phá hoại đường ống Nord Stream 1 và 2 có thể là thông điệp nhắc nhở Liên Âu rằng, không nên để Nord Stream 2 chìm vào quên lãng. Chưa thể giải đáp câu hỏi ai là thủ phạm loạt tấn công nhắm vào đường ống dẫn khí đối Nord Stream 1 và 2 Nga–Mỹ tố cáo lẫn nhau « phá hoại » cơ sở hạ tầng thiết yếu của châu Âu, mà một số quốc gia lành viên Liên Minh Bắc Đại Tây Dương, NATO. Theo kinh tế gia Sylvie Matelly, phó giám đốc Viện Quan Hệ Quốc Tế và Chiến Lược của Pháp, IRIS, vụ phá hoại này mang một thông điệp kép : « Với chiến tranh Ukraina, Mỹ ý thức được rằng Châu Âu đang từng bước cai nghiện khí đốt của Nga. Căng thẳng giữa Hoa Kỳ với các đối tác châu trên vấn đề năng lượng đã hạ nhiệt. Khả năng Mỹ phái hoại đường ống của châu Âu theo tôi rất thấp. Trái lại từ đầu cuộc chiến, Nga và tổng thống Putin luôn khai thác khí đốt như một lá chủ bài để bắt chẹt châu Âu, gây nên một sự hoảng loạn trên thị trường năng lượng của châu Âu, để gây chia rẽ trong nội bộ 27 thành viên Liên Âu. Dù vậy, tuy không dễ, nhưng khối châu Âu vẫn dứt khoát giảm mức độ lệ thuộc vào dầu khí của Nga. Thành thử đây có thể là một thủ đoạn để Matxcơva nhắc nhở rằng đã đến lúc các bên cần đàm phán với Nga về năng lượng thay vì đi tìm những những nguồn cung cấp khác để thay thế. Thêm một yếu tố lợi hại hơn thế nữa đó là những cơ sở hạ tầng thiết yếu khác của châu Âu cũng có thể trở thành mục tiêu tấn công, tôi muốn nói đến các hệ thống cáp quang dưới lòng biển, mạng phân phối điện lực ». Cơ sở hạ tầng thiết yếu, mục tiêu dễ bị tấn công ? Vẫn theo bà Sylvie Matelly viện IRIS : khái niệm « cơ sở hạ tầng thiết yếu » đối với một quốc gia đã được mở rộng theo thời gian. Trước đây trong danh sách này gồm các hải cảng lớn, sân bay quốc tế, trung tâm điện lực, các đập thủy điện nhưng trong thời đại công nghệ số, thì từ hệ thống cáp quang dưới lòng biển đến các trạm vệ tinh phát sóng, ăng ten điện thoại, các đường ống dẫn dầu và khí đốt, các bệnh viện với hệ thống tin học lưu trữ giữ thông tin cá nhân của các bệnh nhân … đều được coi là những « điểm nhậy cảm » cần được tăng cường an ninh. Emmanuel Dupuy, cố vấn về an ninh quốc phòng viện IPSE giải thích thêm : « Đây chính là những cơ sở mà Liên Âu và NATO coi là thiết yếu và cần phải được bảo vệ. Các đường ống dẫn khí đốt là những cơ sở hạ tầng, đặt trên lãnh thổ của châu Âu hay trong các vùng biển thuộc đặc quyền kinh tế của khối này, liên quan trực tiếp đến các thành viên của Liên Âu như  Đan Mạch, Thụy Điển, Ba Lan, Litva … và nhiều nước trong khu vực còn là thành viên của NATO. Do vậy đợt tấn công này còn nhằm chứng minh rằng Liên Âu và NATO không đủ sức bảo đảm an ninh cho các cơ sở hạ tầng thiết yếu của chính mình ». Phần Lan đã lập tức tăng cường an ninh tại đường biên giới chung với Nga, Thụy Điển huy động quan đội bảo đảm an ninh cho hai nhà máy điện hạt nhân. Na Uy, quốc gia trở thành nguồn cung cấp khí đốt số 1 cho toàn khối châu Âu ngay từ tuần trước đã lập tức chấp nhận phối hợp với quân đội Anh, Đức và Pháp bảo đảm an toàn cho toàn bộ ngành công nghiệp dầu khí quốc gia.    Thách thức trong một thế giới « kết nối » Nhìn đến bản đồ các đường ống dẫn khí đốt hiện tại đang kết nối nhiều quốc gia trên Lục Địa Già : pipeline IGB đưa khí đốt của Azerbaijan vào châu Âu nhưng Azerbaijan lại đang có xung đột vũ trang với Armenia và một lần nữa vấn đề an ninh của các « cơ sở hạ tầng thiết yếu » lại được đặt ra. Thêm vào đó như chuyên gia kinh tế Matelly viện IRIS ghi nhận trong thế giới toàn cầu hóa chỉ cần van năng lượng bị « kẹt » ở một khúc nào đó trên các đường ống dài cả trăm, thậm chí cả hơn ngàn cây số cũng đủ để gây tắc nghẽn cho hệ thống phân phối của nhiều quốc gia. Cuối cùng, tác động của các loạt phá hoại đường ống Nord Stream 1 và 2 cho thấy chiến tranh Ukraina không chỉ là một cuộc xung đột thuần túy vũ trang khoanh vùng tại một quốc gia. « Chiến tranh » dưới một hình thức khác, đã lan đến tới vùng biển Baltic, thách thức kinh tế châu Âu và một phần lớn trên thế giới khi đẩy giá năng lượng lên cao. Ngoài ra, Ukraina và Nga là những vựa ngũ cốc của thế giới, là những quốc gia xuất khẩu khoáng sản, chiến tranh Matxcơva khai mào đã lôi kéo cả một phần lớn nhân loại vào vòng xoáy của lạm phát. Chiến tranh do ông Putin khởi động hôm 24/02/2022 không thu hẹp trong lĩnh vực quân sự mà đã lan rộng tới các mảng từ ngoại giao đến thương mại, đến các mạng lưới công nghiệp của thế giới, và có nguy cơ dẫn tới một cuộc khủng hoảng nhân đạo khi một phần dân số trên thế giới bị nạn đói đe dọa. Chính vì điểm này, giới quan sát Âu Mỹ đã nêu bật trở lại khái niệm về một cuộc « chiến toàn diện » không chỉ một mình Ukraina phải hứng chịu.

Yesterday we saw the Aussie market hit a 6-week high after rising for three days and lifting 0.8% - attempting to play catch up with global equities. Today, the futures are suggesting a small lift of 0.04%.The IMF raised global growth forecasts from 5.2% to 6%. That's the quickest growth rate since 1980. For Australia it sees our economy growing at 4.5%.What to watch todayToday traders and investors will be focused on four areas: (1) Stocks benefitting from Australian NZ flights taking off 19 April - like Air New Zealand (ASX:AIZ) which rose 8% yesterday. (2) The Tech sector – Yesterday it saw its biggest gain in a long time, with Afterpay (ASX:APT) rising 10%, Zip (ASX:Z1P) rising 9% and Xero (ASX:XRO) rising 3.1% - as bond yields stabilised and the US tech sector is coming back. (3) Stocks that hit a 52-week high to see if they have more momentum. (4) Eco news – construction index for March – expected to show further growth, supporting earnings in construction and mortgages stocks and Services sector data due out today – expected to strengthen. Companies going ex-dividend today, including Adbri (ASX:ABC) as well as ETFs like IOZ, which is the top 200 ETF, and IGB which is a Bond ETF.  Trading ideas:Bell Potter reiterated its Buy calls on two stocks overnight: Acrow Formwork & Construction (ASX:ACF) with a $0.45 target and Senex Energy (ASX:SXY) with a $3.71. Super Retail Group (ASX:SUL), Redbubble (ASX:RBL) and Nickel Mines (ASX:NIC) are all giving off bullish charting signals according to Trading Central.

Sibylle Schroer is an ecologist from IGB, and joined us to discuss the role the increasing amounts of light at night plays in the experience of human and non-human wildlife. We discussed citizen science and the need for multidisciplinary approaches in the field as well as the barriers in perceived security and legislation. What emerges in the conversation is a need for night studies, not just late economics, but a genuine understanding of the purpose for each light turned on outside at night. We can create something that helps shift workers, respects wildlife, and is useful for safety needs. Change happens faster than you think, we can come to better understanding of exterior lighting and create systems that make more sense.
