What does it take to go from thinking you've run your last race to standing on the Olympic podium? Today on the Runna Podcast, we're joined by Georgia Hunter Bell, Olympic bronze medalist and National record holder. Georgia's journey is anything but ordinary and we unpacked it all…What we spoke about:
Hey EYV fam, this wasn't the conversation I hoped we'd be having after the 2024 election. Instead of looking ahead to progressive change, we're unpacking what went wrong—and where we found moments of hope. Despite the results of the presidential election, there were historic wins for women of color, progressive ballot measures, and a brighter path in certain states. But we can't ignore the challenges ahead, especially for marginalized communities. In this episode, I reflect on: - Historic Wins: The first two Black women elected to the U.S. Senate, pro-choice Democratic victories, and groundbreaking firsts like Sarah McBride, the first openly trans member of Congress. - Ballot Measures: From protecting abortion rights to climate policies, there were wins that matter deeply. - The Big Picture: Why Vice President Harris' loss was driven by factors like misogynoir, misinformation, and economic dissatisfaction—and how they reflect larger systemic issues. - What's Next:How communities of color, women, and allies can come together to survive and advocate in the face of upcoming challenges. This episode isn't just about the election—it's about survival, community, and figuring out where we go from here. I'm asking YOU, my listeners, to share your thoughts: - What resources or topics can I cover to help you navigate these times? - Who do you want to hear from on the show? Email me your thoughts at EmbraceYourVoicePod@gmail.com Subscribe to the listserv at EmbracingYourVoicePod.com to get updates and resources.Take care of yourselves. Rest, reflect, and connect with your community. We're not just rebuilding democracy—we're ensuring our collective survival. Let's find ways to support and sustain each other. Mentioned in This Episode: - Season 2, Episode 9: Why Kamala Harris Could and Should Be President - Articles I've written on misogynoir and Harris' treatment as Vice President (links in the show notes) Until next time, EYV fam. ❤️ Here are articles I've written on research on how women of color are treated as candidates and/or elected officials:Navigating Double Standards for Women of Color Candidateshttps://www.genderontheballot.org/navigating-double-standards-for-women-of-color-candidates/Double Standards, Vice Presidency, and Kamala Harrishttps://www.genderontheballot.org/double-standards-the-vice-presidency-kamala-harris/Black Women's Political Leadership: The Barriershttps://www.genderontheballot.org/black-womens-political-leadership-part-2/When The Run: The Challenges Women of Color Face in Politischttps://www.genderontheballot.org/when-they-run-the-challenges-facing-women-of-color-in-politics/

AABP Executive Director Dr. Fred Gingrich is joined by Dr. Mario Vailati Riboni from the technical services team at Diamond V, a platinum sponsor of the 55th AABP Annual Conference in Long Beach, Calif. AABP members can view the breakfast presentation delivered by Dr. Matias Stangaferro, “What's Next: How to use research and data to drive effective decisions”, on the online recorded CE platform health. Robini discusses how nutrition can impact animal and we discuss several research projects and publications that support the use of prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics in dairy rations as well as defining these terms. Mastitis and udder health remain a significant disease challenge in the dairy industry and we review some of the financial impacts of mastitis in dairy cows. Currently, the dairy industry spends $70-100 per cow per year on prevention and up to $450 per case of clinical mastitis. Feeding the immune system with key nutrients can decrease the impacts of mastitis in the dairy industry. Robini also unpacks the practical application of feeding these products on the dairy and the financial returns that can be realized from utilizing them in dairy rations. To find out more information about these products, contact your Diamond V technical service specialist and visit their website. Publications: Vailati-Riboni, M., Coleman, D.N., Lopreiato, V. et al. President Biden gave his first State of the Union address this week, and it was certainly a doozy amid the invasion of Ukraine, COVID, and rising inflation. So how'd it go? The answer: It depends on the symbolism you're looking for. Right behind President Biden sat a notably maskless Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi – a sign, perhaps, of a White House that's willing to live with rather than eradicate COVID-19. There was also plenty of bipartisan applause when Biden vowed to crack down on gun violence and “fund the police.” But was his speech focused too much on statesmanship, and not enough on policy? Guest host Keli Goff discusses with panelists Tara Setmayer, senior advisor at the Lincoln Project on the right; David Dayen, executive editor at the American Prospect on the left; and special guest Kristen Soltis Anderson, Republican pollster and founding partner at Echelon Insights. Next: How does bias in newsrooms determine which crises go viral, and which get relegated to the digital darkness? Also, several gallons of Russian liquor are now swimming in the American drainage system. But how will eschewing Russian products and culturally sanctioning its citizens put an end to Putin's invasion? Plus: Who is a conservative? It's a question worth asking, now that thousands of Republicans, including our own Tara Setmayer, have left the party. Is the typical conservative pro-Trump? Anti-Trump? Or is Trump not a factor at all anymore? And finally: Our panelists rant from across the spectrum about ocean shipping, pop culture, and why Ketanji Brown Jackson's nomination to the Supreme Court is a historic win for Black women, even if she's never confirmed.
Depression linked to reduced arginine levels University of Eastern Finland, February 20, 2022 People suffering from major depressive disorder, MDD, have reduced arginine levels, a new study from the University of Eastern Finland shows. Arginine is an amino acid which the body uses to produce, e.g., nitric oxide. Nitric oxide, in turn, is a nervous system and immune defence mediator, and it also plays a role in vascular regulation. The global arginine bioavailability ratio, GABR, is an indicator of the body's arginine levels, and the ratio has previously been used to measure the body's capacity to produce nitric oxide. Reduced arginine bioavailability is also known to be an independent risk factor of cardiovascular diseases. (NEXT) Vitamin D supplementation associated with improvement in mood, desire in women Medical University of Silesia (Poland), February 19 2022 A study reported in Endokrynologia Polska resulted in improvement in female sexual desire, orgasm and satisfaction, as well as mood, after supplementation with vitamin D. Based on researchers Robert Krysiak and colleagues' previous finding of an association between deficient vitamin D levels and abnormal female sexual function, a trial that examined the effects of six months of oral vitamin D supplementation was conducted among 47 women with deficient or insufficient plasma vitamin D levels. Women with vitamin D deficiency, defined as plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels that were lower than 2 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), were given 4,000 international units (IU) vitamin D per day, and participants with insufficient levels of 20-30 ng/mL were given 2,000 IU daily or no vitamin D. Questionnaires that evaluated female sexual function and depressive symptoms were completed before and after the treatment period. Supplementation with vitamin D was associated with improved sexual desire in both deficient and insufficient women. Among participants with vitamin D deficiency, vitamin D improved total sexual function scores and scores for sexual satisfaction and orgasm, while decreasing total depression scores. (NEXT) Midwifery linked to better birth outcomes in state-by-state report cards Oregon State University, February 22, 2022 Midwife-friendly laws and regulations tend to coincide with lower rates of premature births, cesarean deliveries and newborn deaths, according to a new U.S.-wide “report card” that ranks all 50 states on the quality of their maternity care. The first-of-its-kind study found a strong connection between the role of midwives in the health care system – what the researchers call “midwifery integration” – and birth outcomes. States with high midwifery integration, like Washington and Oregon, generally had better results, while states with the least integration, primarily in the Midwest and South, tended to do worse. The findings were published in the journal PLOS ONE. About 10 percent of U.S. births involve midwives, far behind other industrialized countries, where midwives participate in half or more of all deliveries. Each state has its own laws and regulations on midwives' credentialing, their ability to provide services at a client's home or at birth centers, their authority to prescribe medication and the degree to which they are reimbursed by Medicaid. (NEXT) Microbiome changes could underlie nicotinamide riboside's ability to protect against weight gain Medical College of Wisconsin, February 21 2022. The January/February 2022 issue of the journal mSystems reported how the vitamin B3 derivative nicotinamide riboside (NR) impacts the gut microbiome and protects against weight gain. NR is a precursor of NAD+, a coenzyme found in all cells that aids in the production of energy. “Gut bacteria produce vitamin B3 in the colon and are capable of salvaging and metabolizing vitamin B3 and its derivatives,” wrote Valery V. Lozada-Fernández of the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and colleagues. “However, it is unknown how dietary supplementation of NR alters the microbiome and if those alterations contribute to deflection of weight gain.” Mice were given diets that were high in fat with or without the addition of NR. NR supplementation resulted in less body mass gain, lower fasting glucose levels and differences in gut microbes, including a greater number of bacteria that produce butyrate. (NEXT) How sound waves could help regrow bones RMIT University (Netherlands), February 22,2022 Researchers have used sound waves to turn stem cells into bone cells, in a tissue engineering advance that could one day help patients regrow bone lost to cancer or degenerative disease. The innovative stem cell treatment from researchers at RMIT University offers a smart way forward for overcoming some of the field's biggest challenges, through the precision power of high-frequency soundwaves. Tissue engineering is an emerging field that aims to rebuild bone and muscle by harnessing the human body's natural ability to heal itself. Additionally, the few clinical trials attempting to regrow bone have largely used stem cells extracted from a patient's bone marrow—a highly painful procedure. In a new study published in the journal Small, the RMIT research team showed stem cells treated with high-frequency sound waves turned into bone cells quickly and efficiently. (Videos) 1. Jonathan Haidt & Yuval Noah Harari: Adapting to Change in an Accelerating World (15:00 to 30:00) (OTHER NEWS) Wokeism Is a Cruel and Dangerous Cult Wokeism's natural logic is to destroy the lives of people of both genders, of all races, and—if need be—of those of every age, all to leverage an otherwise unworkable ideological agenda. Victor Davis Hanson (Stanford University) Wokeism has been described by its critics as the omnipresent use of race—and to a lesser extent, gender—to replace meritocracy and thus ensure equality of result. What follows from implementing that ideology are reparatory actions to reward those of the present by atoning for the injustices done to others in the past. Some see it as an update of 1960s cultural Marxism fads. Others scoff that it is just a return to 1980s-style political correctness. Still more see it as the logical successor to 1990s-type race, class, and gender obsessions—albeit with a shriller and more dangerous Jacobin, Soviet, and Maoist twist. Wokeism's hysteria also invites comparisons to the Salem witch trials and McCarthyism. But few have described wokeism as the cruel creed that it is. Wokeism's natural logic is to destroy the lives of people of both genders, of all races, and—if need be—those of every age, all to leverage an otherwise unworkable ideological agenda. It is nihilist and destroys everything it touches. It tears apart foes and friends alike, whether by fueling media-driven hatred of Donald Trump or faux-deification of the disaster that is now Joe Biden. Woke's Victims Defunding law enforcement and defaming police resulted in record numbers of murders in 12 U.S. cities. A wave of violent crime is even hitting America's suburbs. Without much fear of arrest, indictment, conviction, and incarceration, emboldened violent career criminals for the past year have robbed, assaulted, and killed the innocent with impunity. The victims at the bus stop, the subway, or in the furniture store do not seem to warrant media or progressive attention, much less sympathy. They are the ignored—the unnamed, and the forgotten collateral damage from the grand experiment of redefining crime as a social construct. The guilty are the elite academics, activists, and billionaires like George Soros who are untouched by what they birthed. We have all seen videos of the vast expanse of flotsam and jetsam strewn by train thieves along the Union Pacific tracks in Los Angeles. Yet the Wild West mess is still more than just the concrete manifestations of Los Angeles County district attorney George Gascón's unhinged efforts to excuse criminals from legal consequences. The packages thrown along the ground by thugs and gangsters represent, among other things, lost COVID-19 test results of the ill. Presumably, they unknowingly are waiting still by the window for the delivery of results that never arrive. The package in the dirt was, perhaps, a key tractor part eagerly awaited, in vain, by the broke farmer in the Central Valley. The mess included the life-saving medicines shipped to the sick that disappeared. And our elected leaders did what in response? Governor Gavin Newsom apologized for using the insensitive word “gangs” to describe those who plunder, loot, and trash railcars. Always In Search of Targets It is a cruel thing to indoctrinate children with the lie that they are innately guilty of oppression due to their skin color. One accurate definition of racism is collective ill-treatment of an individual due to his innate appearance—on the pretext that such bias is deserved, given the target is deemed mentally, spiritually, or morally inferior because of said traits. But that, in a nutshell, is the essence of critical race theory: the destruction of all human traits and unique characteristics, as demonized individuals are reduced to stereotyped, faceless members of a collective. The Forgotten Broken Eggs of the Woke Omelet Equity in our Orwellian world is not equality, but payback. Again, it is the idea of making the current generation pay for the supposed sins of the long dead of centuries past. Aside from the destruction of merit by the substitution of racial criteria, millions from a discarded generation will have doors slammed on their careers—simply because of the color of their skin. And they will never forget that. The woke do not even make the effort to admit that class matters as much as, or more than, race. By doing so, they doom millions of poor white and Asian students, who managed in poverty to achieve excellent grades and test scores, from being admitted to top-tier schools. Their actual achievement, despite their absence of wealthy, college-educated, or well-connected parents, means little. Once a morally bankrupt society—for naïve, utopian, or ignoble reasons—begins to calibrate graduation ceremonies, dorm space, roommate selection, achievement, and grading standards based on race, then it not only will lose its standard of living, but it will deserve to. And it may have a future date with the violence of Rwanda, Iraq, or the Balkans. Power, Not “Equity,” Is the Creed In sum, wokeness is not about kindness, equality, fairness, or morality. It is the power agenda of the elite of all races. For differing reasons, they rig the game in their own interests, without a care about who suffers. Rich white people assume that they possess the money, the influence, the networking skills, and the connections to navigate around the very exclusionary rules they make for others. For them, there are seldom costs. But they win apparent psychological gain at feeling spiritually superior while driving a Range Rover. They get high on the sense of power they wield to engineer the lives of millions deemed less important than they. And to the degree they feel guilty about their own monopoly of wealth and leisure, such transient superficial remorse is alleviated by abstract caring for the “other.” If they can ensure that 50 percent of TV commercials highlight African Americans, then they worry little about the nation's existential crisis of 800 blacks murdered in Chicago last year. And no such television execs have a clue—or likely a concern—about how to stop it. The woke take out a medieval contract that all their material indulgences can be balanced by virtue-signaling caring for the less fortunate—although always at someone else's expense. Woke = Wealthy Careerists And for the millions of the affluent, elite nonwhite? The resurgence of racial obsessions conveniently destroys the old idea of class, even though now it is the far more precise calibration of inequality. For all the woke talk about “constructs” of gender, race is somehow alone exempted and declared innate, definable, and immutable. One's appearance becomes the permanent victimized refuge—even of NBA multibillionaires and billionaire rappers alike. A Ward Churchill or Elizabeth Warren can desperately seek to leverage a career in becoming Native American, apparently as if they were almost trapped in their own white bodies. Yet they can still not manage to construct such assumed identities in the manner of Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner. If race is now the sole immutable barometer of who is a victim, who a victimizer, then LeBron James, Jay-Z, Kayne West, Chris Rock, Michelle Obama, and Oprah Winfrey are always to be among the eternally oppressed. The enormous influence, power, status, and wealth they wield never negates their victimhood, despite a nation three generations into affirmative action. In the immoral calculus of woke, the poor white or Southeast Asian offspring of poorly paid high-school dropouts constitute “the privileged.” And a multimillionaire racist like the TV anchorwoman Joy Reid claims to be the perpetual victim, not the inner-city African American retiree who in 2021 has lost local police protection. No wonder the woke elite and the affluent leftists fixate on race, given they are now the ruling class. Otherwise, their own privilege would be the obvious target of the once-beloved “Revolution.” So, they fear that by their own prior left-wing standards, they too could end up on the wrong side of their moral Maginot Line. Wokeism's obsessions with ferreting out “white privilege” are a way for rich people to head off (so to speak) the fate of Marie Antoinette. Totalitarian Wokeism A final note. We know wokeism is both contrary to human nature and antithetical to democracy and constitutional government. Without public support, it has instead embraced an entire array of cruel, Soviet, and Maoist means to achieve its own self-interested ends. Woke talk about “racists” eerily emulates Soviet boilerplate about “counterrevolutionaries.” Today's wokeist spouts things that could come right out of the mouth of the novelist Boris Pasternak's character Army Commissar Strelnikov, or Mao's Little Red Book concerning “suppression of counterrevolutionaries.” No wonder the woke, so-called “humanists” are the first to resort to Trotskyization and iconoclasm. They are masters of censoring, blacklisting, scapegoating, deplatforming, ritual humiliation, doxxing, cancel-culture, ostracism, and disbarring. Wokeism's logic is the eternal one of the bully Jacobin with his guillotine lists of the revolutionary unpure, the 19th-century lynch mob storming the frontier jail, the Red Guards hounding the counterrevolutionary, and the forced mental hospitalizations of the Soviet Union. But above all, wokeism is a cruel cult—created by and for the careerist benefit of the privileged.
Study: Coconut oil-enriched Mediterranean diet found to improve brain function in Alzheimer's patients University of Valencia (Spain), February 6, 2022 Spanish researchers believe that a Mediterranean diet enriched with coconut oil can help improve cognitive function in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Researchers from the University of Valencia and the Catholic University of Valencia looked to diet as a means of addressing AD. Specifically, they looked at whether a coconut oil-enriched Mediterranean diet would be beneficial for AD patients. The researchers chose coconut oil due to the fact that the medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) in it can be converted into ketones, which brain cells then use as fuel. Previous research had already identified ketone bodies as a possible therapeutic for AD. Following the study, the researchers found that those in the experimental group displayed improvements in temporal orientation as well as their episodic and semantic memory. (NEXT) Calorie restriction rewires metabolism, immunity for longer health span Pennington Biomedical Research Center, February 11, 2022 Calorie restriction improves metabolic and immune responses that help determine both how long a person lives and how many years of good health they enjoy, a new study shows. Two years of modest calorie restriction reprogrammed the pathways in fat cells that help regulate the way mitochondria generate energy, the body's anti-inflammatory responses, and potentially longevity,. In other words, calorie restriction rewires many of the metabolic and immune responses that boost lifespan and health span. The study found that people who cut their calorie intake by about 14 percent over two years generated more T cells, which play a key role in immune function and slow the aging process. (NEXT) Evidence points to fish oil to fight asthma University of Rochester, February 9, 2022 University of Rochester Medical Center scientists have discovered new essential information about omega 3 fatty acids contained in fish oil and how they could be used for asthma patients. In a paper published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation–Insight, researchers using cell cultures from local asthma patients, found that: Omega-3 fatty acid products can reduce the production of IgE, the antibodies that cause allergic reactions and asthma symptoms in people with milder cases of asthma; But in patients with severe asthma who use high doses of oral steroids, the omega-3 fatty acids are less effective because the corticosteroids block the beneficial effects. (NEXT) Study: Mindful adults age with better mental health University of Maine, February 11, 2022 Aging happens to all of us. If you are a mindful person, though, you may be better equipped to handle the effects of growing older. According to a University of Maine study led by associate professor of psychology Rebecca MacAulay, published in the journal Aging & Mental Health, aging adults with high levels of “trait mindfulness,” or a person's innate ability to pay attention to the present moment without judgment, showed measures of greater well-being and mental health. Mindful adults also demonstrated more mental resilience to stressful situations. (NEXT) Plant extract fights brain tumor Max Planck Institute (Germany), February 11, 2022 Cushing Disease, not to be confused with Cushing's Syndrome, is caused by a tumour in the pituitary gland in the brain. The tumour secrets increased amounts of the stress hormone adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) followed by cortisol release from the adrenal glands leading to rapid weight gain, elevated blood pressure and muscular weakness. Patients are prone to osteoporosis, infections and may show cognitive dysfunction or even depression. In 80 to 85 % of the patients the tumour can be removed by uncomfortable brain surgery. For inoperable cases, there is currently only one targeted therapy approved which unfortunately causes intense side effects such as hyperglycemia in more than 20 % of the patients. (NEXT) Daily dose of beetroot juice improved endurance and blood pressure Wake Forest Medical Center, February 11, 2022 Scientists at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center have found that a daily dose of beetroot juice significantly improved exercise endurance and blood pressure in elderly patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFPEF). The study is published in the current online edition of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology-Heart Failure. Exercise intolerance – shortness of breath and fatigue with normal amounts of exertion — is the primary symptom of HFPEF and is due partly to non-cardiac factors that reduce oxygen delivery to active skeletal muscles. HFPEF is a recently recognized disease that reflects how the left ventricle of the heart pumps with each beat. It occurs primarily in older women and is the dominant form of heart failure, as well as the most rapidly increasing cardiovascular disorder in this country. Both reports conducted by the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB), a watchdog created after 9/11 to ensure counter-terror investigations did not jeopardize privacy or civil liberties, looked into two programs conducted under Executive Order 12333 authority. The Reagan-era presidential directive established a framework for data collection by the intelligence community during foreign missions. When Edward Snowden almost a decade ago revealed the extent of warrantless bulk data collection by the government, Congress responded by banning collection under a separate statute focused on domestic activities, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). (NEXT) How the Left betrayed the Truckers MALCOM KYEYUNE. — UNHERD, FEBRUARY 9 2022 They call it “The Honkening”. Ottawa, Canada's capital city, is currently being besieged by a novel kind of protest. Honkening is a fairly appropriate name for what's going on. Thousands of truckers have driven to the capital, and barraged the city with the noise of truck horns creating a cacophony of sound. Elsewhere, on the border between the United States and Canada, truckers, farmers and cowboys have blockaded traffic. As the protests enter another week, Ottawa's mayor has declared a state of emergency. Jim Watson described the truckers — ostensibly protesting against Canada's harsh Covid mandates — as “out of control”. Watson sees anarchy; the truckers fulminate against Covid authoritarianism. But this battle is really about working-class discontent. The naive among us could be forgiven for thinking that this protest signalled something auspicious about “late capitalist” society. For decades, the common folk wisdom for both the Left and the Right was that the West's working classes had been completely neutralised as a political force, and that class conflict itself was a relic of the past. This idea took hold in the Sixties, when Herbert Marcuse theorised that Western workers had been subjected to a “socially engineered arrest of consciousness”. Their vested interest in the existing capitalist order made them impossible to radicalise. Ever since, finding new theoretical models to explain the unreliability (and stodgy conservatism) of workers has been a recurring activity on parts of the Left. Marxists had made a horrific discovery: the working class were not their foot soldiers. As Joan Didion once put it: “The have-nots, it turned out, mainly aspired to having.” Many on the Left came to believe that without their corporatist union structures, and without their shop stewards and political organisers, the working classes were done for. They were little better, to paraphrase Marx, than a “sack of potatoes”. Without proper leadership, the workers would be too inert and stupid to do anything about their plight. As such, the decades after the fall of the Soviet Union (and the defeat of the strike waves of the Eighties) saw many Leftists indulge a wistful nostalgia for a time when the workers stuck it to the powers that be. Celebration of the good old days of the Left, and of “working-class power” in general, was thus central to the aesthetics of the now completely defunct wave of Left populism in the 2010s. With that backdrop in mind, the explosion of worker militancy over vaccine mandates — and, on a related note, high fuel taxes in Europe — ought to have been greeted by enthusiasm by the Leftist activist and organiser set. Yet nothing could be further from the truth. The truckers in Canada have instead triggered a primordial sense of dread in the hearts of the urban classes, in the people who Canadian trucker Gord Magill has dubbed “the email job caste”. This sense of fear and dread at the machinations of the proles is hardly something unique to Canada. Indeed, even the United States saw a large increase of worker militancy and wildcat strikes over oppressive vaccine mandates. Like their compatriots in Canada, America's various professional friends of the working class responded with horror and scorn. The well-known Marxist economist, Richard Wolff, was mobbedon Twitter for suggesting that workers striking over mandates were actually part of something called “class struggle”, rather than merely an expression of “fascism”. Ottawa's truckers are a symptom of the massive class divide that is opening up across the West. Marxists are sticking their heads in the sand about this generational moment, or papering it over with absurd topsy-turvy leaps. In one recent display of moon logic, the Canadian activist, writer and self-described socialist Nora Loreto complained that “labour” was invisible in the resistance to the “fascist” truckers that had occupied Ottawa. An exasperated comrade chimed in with a story of being a shop steward for a teamster (truck driver) union, and — horror of horrors — the painful truth was that many teamsters were more likely to be in the protest themselves than protesting against it. The exchange is modern Western Leftism in a nutshell. Is there a single better illustration of the contradictions of the moment? An “activist” and organiser” recoiling in horror at a bunch of truckers — people who work in the real, material economy, ferrying the foodstuffs and goods we all depend on to survive — staging a political protest, only to then ask “but where is the organised working class in all of this?”. Isn't it obvious to the point of parody that the workers are the people inside the trucks? It's easy to laugh at this sort of absurdity, but the lesson here is anything but a joke. The divorce between “the Left” and “the workers” is now complete and irrevocable. Nora Loreto may not be a person with calloused hands, and she may very well belong to Gord Magill's “email jobs caste”. But for the longest time, the political rhetoric and worldview of the Left depended on the idea that the trucker and the activist were merely two sides of the same coin. Without the activist and the “organiser”, the trucker would never be able to know how to organise himself and his fellows politically; without the trucker, the activist and the organiser would not have a cause for which to organise. Now it seems that the trucker — and by extension, the pilot, the garbage collector, and the bus driver — does not need or want this caste of self-appointed leaders. This divorce has happened all over the world in recent years. After the massive rejection by Red Wall voters of Jeremy Corbyn and his activist base in the smart, urban, and highly credentialed parts of Britain, one started to see a rhetoric of open loathing for the dumb, uneducated gammons and proles. In Germany, the Left party Die Linke has endured several rounds of severe internal fighting and strife. As in the UK, the younger, more urban, more credentialed parts of the Left have fought a running battle — and thrown pies — against pro-worker “racists” such as Sahra Wagenknecht. In Canada, that loathing has now turned into fear — and into outright hatred. The problem of the truckers is not really the honking (which the Guardian sniffily calls “crude behaviour“), because sooner or later, that honking will stop. The state of emergency will end. But the protests, significantly, have shown how confused and weak the opponents of the working classes are today. During the pandemic lockdowns, the email jobs caste loved to talk about essential workers, and luxuriated in public displays of gratitude for them. But this caste of genteel urbanites never realised that this choice of nomenclature was in fact much more meaningful — and ominous – than they understood. Some people, it seems, simply are critical to the functioning of the economy, pandemic or no pandemic. Once those people — and truck drivers are perhaps the most critical of them all — start to demand to be listened to, they have ways to make those demands felt. For the Left, the problem of the truckers is their newfound political independence. Nostalgia really is a thing of the past now; the dinosaurs that were thought long extinct are back now, and they are hungry. Gone are the halcyon days of dreaming about halcyon days – where serious working class militancy was just a distant myth. The real danger of any trucker's strike, or any pilot's walkout, or any fuel tax protest in Europe, is that every new confrontation sets a precedent: a precedent that says that the Gord Magills are done taking orders from the Nora Letos of the world.
On today's show, I want to talk about simplicity and how to pare down your network. I talk a lot about building business relationships, which is a different way of considering how to build your network. Former podcast guest Anna Hetzel talked about this also, how to build community intentionally. By definition, a community will be smaller than a network. A network is often vast and you can't make personal connections with everyone in your network. A community should be made up of people you actually know and who are invested in your success—and you are invested in theirs. There have been times in my freelance journey where that large network is overwhelming. I've done things related to that network that are exhausting or a waste of time. So, as my business became more successful, I saw what was helpful and were I wanted to invest. I started to intentionally set the rest of it aside. And every now and again, after I try new things and new groups and new resources, I have to remind myself again to pare back. Here are some examples of potential overwhelm where you might need to pare back: LinkedIn I purposely started using LinkedIn more and also more strategically this year. I know my client base is more likely to be on LinkedIn than Twitter, where I usually live. However, I was noticing that a lot of the posts I was seeing were from people I didn't remember ever connecting with. And when I would look at my list of connections, there was image after image of someone I didn't remember. I might have met this person once at a social gathering or a conference, but if we've never really communicated since, why am I connected with them? I had over 900 connections on LinkedIn! I felt like they were cluttering my feed and preventing me from truly making connections. After two rounds of culling my list to people I actually know and actually communicate with now and again, I am down to about 400 connections. Since then, I have noticed a definite difference in my feed. The posts now relate to my business in some way, and I recognize the original posters. Online community groups This may mean Facebook groups, LinkedIn groups, Slack channels, tweet chats or private forums. I think a lot of us looked for new groups to join, or even started our own online communities, when the pandemic hit, so we could feel connected to other humans while in lockdown. But most of us aren't in full lockdown anymore, and either way there are probably some groups you outgrew. It's OK to join groups and leave them later. These don't have to be a permanent fixture in your life. What online communities are you a part of? Where do you spend the most of your time? Two more questions: What groups are you in that you just don't participate in? You can easily leave or delete those. Next: How do those groups make you feel? Are you overwhelmed? Do they create anxiety? Do they contribute to your imposter syndrome? If these groups are creating negative emotions, I highly recommend cutting back or eliminating them from your life. Ask yourself: What if you could only be a part of three online communities? What would they be? Rank what you love and stick with those. And delete the rest. Smaller, more intimate groups Maybe these are ongoing text chains or regular Zoom chats with small groups. These can be amazing for your business, your mental health, for getting support and having camaraderie. I'm not encouraging you to get rid of all these smaller communities, but it's worth at least considering each one individually and asking yourself: What do you get out of them? Do they lift your spirits or do they overwhelm you? Also, please remember that you should never feel obligated to be a part of these communities. You can tell people, at any time, that you are feeling overwhelmed by your responsibilities and the amount of time available in each day and that you need to cut back on some things. Or...how can we get Uncle Sam into therapy? The topic we had originally planne for today was how to not take things personally, but Allen and Thom put that aside in light of President-Elect Joe Biden’s and VP-Elect Kamala Harris’s speeches the night before this podcast was recorded. In the spirit of “Conversations about What Matters Most,” the conversation in this podcast is about what this nation’s 46th President and his historic Vice President had to say to us and the world about their plan for leadership. Their emphasis is multifaceted as it must be if they are going to address the many top priorities that have been moved out of the current president’s way as he remains singularly focused on holding onto power, in spite of having lost the election. But among those multiple top priorities for Biden and Harris is specifically working to heal the partisan divide that has become so debilitating to our government and to the social and cultural fabric of our nation. Allen and Thom acknowledge that feeling good about a message of healing and putting that message into practice are two different things and that both hosts see a role for mental health professionals if we are to move toward healing. The challenges are enormous, they acknowledge, but the principles of healing are the same as they are in their therapy rooms. The work of patching up a nation that has been split right down the middle is, after all, the work of helping human beings come to terms with emotions, expectations, differing beliefs and values, by way of healthy communication. Aka: THERAPY. Allen and Thom are calling on their colleagues in the field of mental health services to think creatively about how we can all contribute to healing --- starting right here. Next: How can you still care about what other people think but not take their opinions personally?

Signal integrity expert, Dr. Eric Bogatin, joins us in this episode to talk about the upcoming DesignCon conference and expo that will be held in Santa Clara, CA January 28th through January 30th. Dr. Bogatin shares information about the presentations he’ll be giving; this includes a 2-part S-Parameter master class, speed training about understanding TDR measurements, and a session tackling tricks the experts use to get more out of their oscilloscopes, just to name a few. Listen in or watch the full episode! Check out the show highlights below for some excellent free online design resources on the SI academy website and all the sessions from this year’s AltiumLive. See What's New in Altium Designer Watch the video, click here. Show Highlights: Eric explains ‘Rule #9’. To add more value while on the expo floor at DesignCon, ‘speed training’ will be available to everyone. These are short, fun, and informal presentations covering one topic or demo. All speed training sessions at DesignCon are free. Four of the world’s experts in signal and power integrity—with 150 to 200 years of collective years of expertise between them—will be on stage together in the ‘Stump the Experts’ panel: Steve Sandler, Istvan Novak, Vladimir Dmitriev-Zdorov, and Larry Smith. Be sure to bring your questions and problems to this discussion. Every six months there is a printed version of the Signal Integrity Journal. The latest edition will be distributed at DesignCon 2020. The cover article, ‘The Myth of Three Capacitor Values’, reveals the origins of this design rule for decoupling capacitors, and why it no longer applies. On Thursday, Jan 30, an expert panel will untangle the countless digital communication standards. This panel discussion will be of great value to those working with high-speed serial links. Also on Thursday: the Career Zone Session will be an excellent opportunity for young engineers to obtain guidance on the fundamentals of starting out in this industry, followed by networking and individual coaching sessions. Eric will also do other speed sessions/demonstrations to increase your understanding of TDR (time-domain reflectometer), and S-Parameter measurement for differentials without a return path. Those unable to attend DesignCon, please take advantage of the Signal Integrity Academy hosted by Teledyne LeCroy. It features a vast collection of free best design practices for signal and power integrity, plus best measurement practices, illustrating four essential principles, including Rule #9. You will also find a series of webinars on the Signal Integrity Academy about the correct usage of a TDR, plus a series on their new network analyzer. Eric has a new book on transmission lines in the works, which will be available soon from Artech. Teledyne has a new high-performance, low-end scope that is also very low-cost. Look out for his presentation, ‘SI/PI on a Budget: Five Tricks to Get More out of Your Oscilloscope’ at DesignCon (also coming to various other venues in the coming months). Be sure to watch the video recordings of Eric’s talks at AltiumLive 2019: ‘Mastering the TDR in 45 Minutes’ and ‘Breaking Bad: A Downside of Open Source Designs.’ Remember to like, subscribe, and tell us what you want to learn about! Kay and Shannon give you a blueprint for becoming the “go-to” provider. They conclude their three-part series about using ‘differentiators’ to achieve massive success, with how to be the ‘Educator,’ not the ‘Seller,’ to get more patients now…and later. The show notes go even deeper and located here: (#) You want to profit more with body contouring. You want to capture the biggest share in the market. And competition is fierce. To engage and attract more patients, you must separate yourself from the masses. You must differentiate. Previously, we’ve discussed great differentiators - using a Unique Selling Proposition and WOW’ing ‘Em. Today we’ll explain why you must not ‘sell’ like the rest; you must use education based messaging to win trust and ultimately, to bring more customers through your doors. And sometimes, you must be patient because some customers take a long time to make the buying decision. But they will ultimately buy and you want them to buy from you. So first we’re going to discuss how to set yourself up as an Educator, not a Seller. After that, we’re going to tell you how to win at the Waiting Game for those potential customers who wait a long time to take action. First - How do you do this, educate rather than sell? Your website absolutely needs to look different from the rest. It needs to be fresh and new and filled with helpful information. You need to be the provider who gives the customers the information they need or want. To keep information fresh, include frequent blog articles, in depth discussion about treatments and issues, a variety of videos and a large library of before/after photos. Give potential customers a reason to want to return to your website again and again and again. Next - How do you successfully win the waiting game? People make buying decisions differently, at different speeds, and for different reasons. Many potential customers will consider your services for a long time before contacting you. Studies show many consumers take up to 18 months before making the decision to come in and buy. You may have won them over initially but you must stay at the top of their mind - no matter how long it takes. How do you do this? You continue to be the educator, the provider and the business that continuously provides useful, helpful information. Use a Contact Form on your website to capture the contact information from your website visitors and continue providing helpful information to them via emails. At our medical spa, we wrote an Pricing Guide eBook to answer commonly asked questions and to assist us in capturing the contact information from these potential customers. But you don’t have to produce an eBook; you can use a simple contact form. Most website visitors are willing to provide their contact information if they think the information you have provided them has been useful and worthwhile and they’re excited about it and look forward to more. In these emails, nurture them with education. We send these educational emails, called Nurturing Emails, at our medical spa. These emails are short and provide a tidbit of helpful information. Nurturing emails are super valuable because they’re all about building relationships, trust and value and staying top of mind. Plus - they also provide an added benefit to your business. They build upon your reputation as the body contouring expert in your community. When starting a Nurturing Email Campaign, remember these important Guidelines for Nurturing Emails: Should not be a sales pitch - customers will lose interest and trust quickly if you’re sending them offers to buy; Should be helpful - you want to provide value up front, giving your potential customers something that helps them without asking for a single thing; and Should not be about your practice or business - if you talk about how great you are or...
Episode 9 - Parenting a student through their first year of college can be an emotional roller coaster from the parent and for the student. Parents may not be equipped to consider the impact of the change in their home life will look like. Parenting through “facetime” is different from having your child under the same roof. It can also be a time of rejuvenation for the parent who is seeking to find their own – new – life. Laura and Beth are joined by Beth Niernberg, who is entering her “sophomore year” of parenting her oldest child through their college experience – and she has opinions about how things went during the first year. When the Kids Leave Home, What’s Next? Hire a virtual assistant (for your existing day job) Preparing to Hire a virtual assistant Measure before you Hire Before you hire a virtual assistant, use an app like toggl.com to measure your time usage Be realistic and ruthlessly honest! Define outcomes! Business as a whole Next year Next ¼ How this tasks feeds those goals - or whether it does actually not contribute to desired goals Eliminate before you delegate! If you wouldn't be willing to pay someone $4 (£3.20) per hour to do a job, why are you doing it at all? Before you hire a virtual assistant, ask: Does this task need doing? If it does, can you make it more efficient? Typical you can hire a virtual assistant to perform Finances Be VERY VERY clear exactly what purpose accounts fulfil Corporate tax return Companies house VAT quarterly UK Management accounting Gross profit for product Management accounts. Also clarify EXACTLY what records you need and what you DON'T need. Typical tasks Take receipts photo and upload then VA's job is to assign to a Xero transaction - category and cost centre. But the feed uploads the transactions - about 40 a month - scan for duplicates How many hours- 8 hours for 2 months' worth - feels intuitive Possible other tasks Sales Outbound calls - need training - good ROI with right person. Inbound calls. Again need training but good ROI with right person. Emails Inbound and outbound X a day Customer service? Sales enquiries - survey or email Research This is an EXCELLENT test task. It will do little harm to the business if done badly (usually). Done well, it should help you get to tasks you keep putting off that could grow the business. Websites Amendments for website - web developers will usually do a way quicker job that you unless you have web dev expertise. Receivables Chasing up late payers - another great way to get an ROI Put together a “bundle” of tasks Scan the business for other outsourceable tasks to get to a bundle of 10 hours a week Super-competent admin - head screwed on. Where to hire a virtual assistant from Freeeup.com (Affiliate link) Use American or Philippino - think about timezones America (lower 48) -8 to -5 hours behind UK Philippines 7 hours ahead Fiverr.com Good for micro tasks - another good way to test potential hires. Upwork Good for hiring for specific projects. I've found good Eastern Europeans here (Serbia, Romania for example) Clarify what kind of virtual assistant you're needing to hire Criteria Personality type Eg fast learner Articulate Able to manage upwards (esp in Philippines this is important) (e.g., if you ask something dumb, they will question "Did you mean that?") Skill sets Experience Selection Review Look at CV/background Ratings on Upwork/Fiverr Interview Get a feel for: Quick on uptake Level of spoken English Ability to think on feet Hire 3 people for a project or even a task- set Test tasks Test Research is really great first task Book keeping is okay if you give small amount and check CRM - onboard and train first QUICK ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE NOW Action 1 capture and clarify tasks What needs doing? If possible measure your time usage eg with Toggl.com What doesn't get done...? Especially ...that could bring in cash Action 2 define business objectives by area Eg CRM - to generate warm leads to phone or email Inbound emails - convert lukewarm to warm or customers Outbound calls - convert warm/hot leads to customers Look at or even make KPIs - currently achieving? Action 3 Eliminate tasks that don't contribute Where are you wasting your time? What is so low a priority it should just not be done (at least for now)? Action 4 Look at usual suspect places Upwork - Eastern Europe Worth checking Freeeup esp. if e-commerce related (affiliate link) Fiverr.com Look locally - talk to your network Sometimes local is best

Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.
Our culture pressures mothers to conform to an ideal of "good mom." When our children are little we are often too busy with caregiving to think about who we are. As kids reach the point in their development where they aren't as dependent, we may find ourselves with more time for ourselves. According to Life Coach Caroline Greene, this new chapter of parenting can be accompanied by a "deflation and a loss of identity and feelings of loneliness, isolation, and confusion." For Caroline, ten years out of law school, she was still in the kitchen. She loved the life she and her husband built for their family, but she "wasn't happy or fulfilled." On top of that, because she knew she was so fortunate, she felt guilty. Annie talks with Caroline about honestly asking ourselves, not only "What kind of person do I want to be raising?" but also (and equally important) "What kind of person do I want to be?" **Special offer for Family Confidential podcast listeners: To get a free copy of Caroline Greene's book "MATTER: How to Find Meaningful Work That's Right For You And Your Family" simply email Caroline@CarolineGreeneCoaching.com and put the word "Matter" in the subject line. Join Dr. Angela Lauria of The Author Incubator as she interviews author Caroline Greene on the writing and publishing of her book, NEXT: How to Start a Successful Business That's Right for You and Your Family. Caroline wrote this book while allowing the book itself to lead her along the way, from the conceptualization of the title, to the finished product actually being held in her hand. Initially, she thought it was all about herself, but then she realized that the process was really about being humble and having faith in being of service to others. She describes her experience as a kind of stepping out into her own powers. When she held the book in her hand, she knew that it was going to have a life of its own. FROM THE MANAGEMENT: We celebrated our six month episode anniversary just the way people in normal relationships do: by totally shaking things up and getting way too personal. Which means, STRAIGHT MEN asked a FEMALE questions. This has never before happened in the history of advice-giving! First: How do I approach women? (Hint: Maybe sometimes just don't?) Next: How soon should I make that big move? And everything you ever wanted to know about sex and actually did, unfortunately, ask aloud: Is my grunting sexy? Why are you making a mess in my bed? How can I get that close to my GF? And what's with the laugh track? Love, Kate "Lana Del Rey - Video Games (Dimasan Remix)" (Dimasan) / CC BY 3.0
