In this episode, my guest is Dr. Gerald Pollack, a renowned professor of bioengineering at the University of Washington and founding editor-in-chief of the journal Water. Dr. Pollack is widely recognized for his groundbreaking discoveries in cell biology and water science, particularly his identification of the “fourth phase” of water—also known as EZ (exclusion zone) water. His research offers a radical rethinking of how water functions in biological systems, challenging classical theories. Today we explore the foundations of Dr. Pollack's theory, emphasizing the influential research of the late Gilbert Ling. We begin by examining key topics such as the existence of the cell membrane, evidence challenging ATP as the cell's energy currency, and the disproofs of the membrane-pump theory. We also question conventional models of the atom and consider how Dr. Pollack's findings connect to these paradigm shifts. Finally, we discuss the discoveries from Dr. Pollack's lab and their far-reaching implications for biology and human health.Full Show Notes Here. Join the boys this week on Trudge Report as we recap a very entertaining week 1 of NFL football. We talk some of the key matchups in our own personal favorite team's games along with some fantasy updates on how everyone did with the start of week 1. Find out which predictions were accurate and which predictions were way wrong. We quickly touch on some of the week 2 match ups that we are all looking forward to. Bill discusses his recent trip home to Pittsburgh and Greg gives us a rundown of his weekend away in Hawk Tua Hills (Hocking Hills). Our recovery topic for the week is how we deal with death and loss in recovery. Unfortunately, we have all personally known too many people that have passed away from the disease of alcoholism and addiction. It is an unfortunate but all too typical circumstance of being in recovery. But it's not just the people we lose in recovery, life doesn't stop, and family members and other loved ones that are not addicted still pass away. We discussed the emotions of this and how we lean on our support group and most importantly, the God of Our Understanding. The longer lifespans we enjoy come shadowed by age-related diseases, notably Alzheimer's. This episode shines a light on the often-overlooked glycans, complex carbohydrates that play a pivotal role in healthy brain function. Our understanding of Alzheimer's causation has evolved, moving beyond just 'trash accumulation' to include problems with 'trash clearance.' Discover the potential of glycans in healing spinal cord injuries, the hurdles in identifying early biomarkers and delivering drugs to the brain. We delve into the essential role of gangliosides, a unique class of glycolipids, and separate science from media hype around Alzheimer's prevention. Ronald Schnaar is the Professor and Interim Director of the Department of Pharmacology and Molecular Sciences and a Professor of Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. John 6:14 – 15 (NLT) 14 When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!” 15 When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself. Matthew 20:21 (NLT) 21 “What is your request?” he asked. She replied, “In your Kingdom, please let my two sons sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right and the other on your left.” Matthew 20:22 (NLT) 22 But Jesus answered by saying to them, “You don't know what you are asking! Are you able to drink from the bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink?” “Our Understanding is to be shaped by Jesus and not by our Expectations.” The Expectation of a Conquering King Luke 22:50 – 51 (NLT) 50 And one of them struck at the high priest's slave, slashing off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this.” And he touched the man's ear and healed him. The Reality is a Risen Savior 2 Timothy 1:9 – 10 (NLT) 9 For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus. 10 And now he has made all of this plain to us by the appearing of Christ Jesus, our Savior. He broke the power of death and illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News. The Expectation of Race Luke 10:33– 37 (NLT) 33 “Then a despised Samaritan came along, and when he saw the man, he felt compassion for him. 34 Going over to him, the Samaritan soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine and bandaged them. Then he put the man on his own donkey and took him to an inn, where he took care of him. 35 The next day he handed the innkeeper two silver coins, telling him, ‘Take care of this man. If his bill runs higher than this, I'll pay you the next time I'm here.' 36 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. 37 The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.” Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.” The Reality is ALL are family Galatians 3:28 - 29 (NLT) 28 There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God's promise to Abraham belongs to you. The Expectation of Self-Righteousness Luke 18:9 – 14 (NLT) 9 Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I'm certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.' 13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.' 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” Reality is Jesus MADE us Righteous Galatians 3:10 – 11 (NLT) 10 But those who depend on the law to make them right with God are under his curse, for the Scriptures say, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the commands that are written in God's Book of the Law.” 11 So it is clear that no one can be made right with God by trying to keep the law. For the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life. Matthew 9:13 (NLT) 13 Then he added, “Now go and learn the meaning of this Scripture: ‘I want you to show mercy, not offer sacrifices.' For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” The Expectation of Unbelief Mark 16:11 - 14 (NLT) 11 But when she told them that Jesus was alive and she had seen him, they didn't believe her. 12 Afterward he appeared in a different form to two of his followers who were walking from Jerusalem into the country. 13 They rushed back to tell the others, but no one believed them. 14 Still later he appeared to the eleven disciples as they were eating together. He rebuked them for their stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had seen him after he had been raised from the dead. The Reality of Jesus Brings Belief Mark 16:15 – 16 (NLT) 15 And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone. 16 Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned. Three Clarifying Questions: Head: What do I know now? Heart: How does this change me? Hands: What do I do now?
Bible Study Don't just take our word for it . . . take His! We would encourage you to spend time examining the following Scriptures that shaped this sermon: 1 Corinthians 15:1–11; Mark 16:1–8. Sermon Outline What Do You Most Fear? For What Do You Most Hope? Sermon Questions How would you contrast human anger with divine anger? Why, according to the sermon, does Mark end his gospel the fear of the women (Mark 16:8)? What are the four elements of the gospel message that Paul received from the Jerusalem disciples, and Paul handed on to the Corinthians (1 Cor. 15:3–4)? If you died tonight and (hey-presto!) suddenly found yourself standing before God: what would you say to him? Our readings suggest that the comfort of restoration to God's favor only makes sense against the background of divine wrath. Which element do you mute or play down in your own life: God's justice, or His love? According to the Bible, can you have one without the other? About Bessel Van der KolkBessell Van der Kolk, MD, is a qualified psychiatrist. He specializes in the field of post-traumatic stress, which led him to write over 150 peer-reviewed scientific articles, the majority of them about post-traumatic stress. Van der Kolk, originally from the Netherlands, has also served as president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. He is currently a professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. IntroductionThe Body Keeps the Score is an innovative book by psychiatrist and trauma expert Van der Kolk. We all understand the effect that psychological trauma can have on individuals. Trauma can impact the way people perceive themselves and the world around them. Psychological trauma can have a lasting impact on the individual's loved ones as well. In this book, Van der Kolk covers the intricacies of how trauma produces these effects by considering the neuroscience involved. Van der Kolk also presents ways neuroscience allows us to produce new, effective treatments for psychological trauma survivors. Examples of these approaches include eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, yoga, and limbic system therapy. Van der Kolk guides us through these modern therapies by recalling his career and the patients he has seen. So this book also serves as a history of the mental health field of the last 30 years. After learning these storyshots, you will better understand how our brains react to and deal with psychological trauma. What Van der Kolk recommends is helping survivors of psychological trauma to recover. StoryShot #1: Antidepressants Ruined Mental Health Support Van der Kolk describes how he and other researchers/therapists were so excited when antidepressants were first introduced. He now believes that our overuse of these medications has led us to treat mental illness as a disease. Unfortunately, this approach means that the following things have been removed from mental health support: The belief that we can heal each other in the same way we can destroy each other Language that is critical to providing us with the power to change circumstances Controlling our physiology by using breathing, moving, and touching techniques, rather than by resorting to medication An inclination to change social conditions so that people feel safer and are then able to thrive StoryShot #2: The Development of Our Understanding of Trauma Van der Kolk's early research played a massive part in reigniting ideas surrounding trauma. Trauma and its association with mental health were supposedly first discovered by Pierre Janet in the late 1800s. Janet is one of the founding fathers of psychology. He was also one of the first to identify how previous events in a person's life can lead to present-day trauma. He defined the terms dissociation and subconscious, both of which are still used today in conversations surrounding trauma. Van der Kolk describes his early research on veterans. Rorschach tests found that trauma can distort the brain's perceptions of reality. These tests were integral to the way Van der Kolk later approached his therapy sessions with survivors of incest. That's when he began treating patients through a ‘trauma lens.' Working with veterans allowed him to understand the remarkable courage that it takes for trauma victims to recall their trauma. Van der Kolk also applied this trauma lens to a broader range of individuals, revealing that trauma was far more widespread. Trauma can result from any experience of extreme stress or pain that...

This week is all about ourselves. Ehem. Well, to be precise, it's all about self, which is to say our Egos. Ego is central to who we are as individuals and is the lens in which we view ourselves, others, and the outside world through. The state of our Egos has a whole lot to do with how we treat ourselves and others, and when our Egos are out of whack, our sobriety is too. We'll do our level best to define Ego and how it affects us in Recovery without going into the proverbial weeds or going down too many rabbit holes, which when we're talking about a subject such as Ego is certainly easier said than done. We'll provide you with helpful insight and strategies to keep the ‘ol Ego your Amigo and ensure it doesn't get to high or too low. Plus we'll share feedback from the Sober & Serious community and take your calls, so Listen Up. This week we're driving toward the conclusion of our series on the 12 Steps with our focus turned singularly on Step 11. Much seems to be asked of us in this particular Step, and many whom first encounter it may indeed feel initially overwhelmed and ill equipped to undertake what appears to be an endeavor reserved strictly for high priests, monks and nuns. Thankfully, this most assuredly is not the case. We're simply attempting, on a daily basis, to become more spiritually aware and connected through intentional acts as we are increasingly able to perform. This comes in more traditional methods like morning and evening prayer, set meditation times, and spiritual reading to less conventional activities like Yoga or breath practices. These activities for all that can and has been said about spiritual practices are essentially intended to allow us to get to the core of our spiritual truths. Are we going to spend our moments, hours, days, and years acting more out of fear and all of it's manifestations? Or are we going to spend these moments, these hours, these days, and yes these years acting out of love, the truest manifestation of the will of the God of Our Understanding. The answer to that, lies in how often we are willing to mindfully and intentionally do the work that is embodied in Step 11. This episode, in turn, will give you a sound understanding of what this Step is, how to work it, and what we can expect once we begin to integrate this practice in our own lives, so Listen Up. Sarah Kallies is seeker of truth, mental illness fighter, singer, and much more! Today she joins the show to equip the church on how to walk with people through all seasons of life. Listen and be blessed as Sarah openly shares her story. Introduction to Sarah Kallies (2:15) Sarah’s life is marked by a fierce love for Jesus. She grew up as a missionary kid having many international experiences and at 3 months old, her family moved to Israel. After living in Thailand for some time, she eventually made her way to Minnesota. A Lifetime of Challenges (4:00) From a very early age, Sarah was mentally ill. At age 13 she attempted suicide at a boarding school and her second suicide attempt took place when she was 19 or 20 years old. Sarah’s most recent suicide attempt was this past summer and on top of these challenging times, she was also sexually assaulted by a stranger in her young adult years. Sarah shares how many people within the church don’t quite understand how you can be walking with Jesus and still suffer severe mental illness. Vulnerability Fosters Growth (7:00) Sarah talks openly about her mental health problems because she desires to create a safe place for open dialogue to help others. Her heart is to be an addition to the church, offering open arms and an open mind to hear people out. Contending with Mental Illness (7:45) The word says when we come to God and ask, we will be forgiven and healed! Sarah used to say she suffered from mental illness but now she says that she contends with it. Check out Mathew 7:7 for a biblical reference. People with Stories (8:45) Sarah mentions that her time spent in a psych ward was one of the best places she could have been. She noticed the people who are sometimes stereotyped as the trash of society, are beautiful people with many stories, resilience, and experiences to share. Identity in Christ (9:30) Our identity is found in Christ, not in any mental illness a person may have! Our Understanding is Secondary (11:00) It’s okay to not understand it all. Thankfully, our understanding will always be secondary to the goodness of God! Sarah often times gets emails from people asking the big questions on why this is happening to her and how to make sense of it. She does not have all the answers either, but one thing Sarah does know is that her end point is complete healing. Communication is Key (12:00) We’re made to communicate, this is God’s heart! Seen and Unseen (12:45) Contending with battles seen and unseen is so important. Carrie elaborates on her thoughts with this. Reaching Out (13:30) Carrie poses a question asking for Sarah’s advice on what she would do if she were to see a new person sitting in the back of a church and how to best serve that person. Sarah mentions inviting someone to be in a small group can make a huge difference. Servant Leadership (16:00) Carrie shares her thoughts on how important the role of being a door holder or volunteer in the church is. Shout out to all the volunteers at church, thank you for your service! A Love for Music (18:00) When Sarah lived in Thailand, her dad would participate in massive crusades. In the times Sarah tagged along, she would get up on stage and sing "Jesus loves me" with the crowd. This is where her love for music started. Music is what also got her through difficult times while being abused at home. Believing (19:00) It wasn't until College Sarah believed singing was something she could pursue outside of church events. After several important conversations with people in her life, something sparked inside which led her to give music recording a shot. Since then, Sarah has recorded three albums and continues to pursue music recording as part of her vocation. Purpose in Everything (22:00) God can use us right where we’re at in the midst of any trial, fault, and sin. His grace is always there no matter what so be encouraged, friend! The farther your life has swung into pain, trial and heartbreak, the further it’s possible to swing the other direction into life, joy, peace and purpose. There can be a shift in your life, you’re not stuck! The Heart Behind Singing (24:00) Sarah has drawn from all of her life experience when it comes to writing songs and music. One gal in particular who was at her show years ago, reached out and mentioned how listening to her music helped save her life! Power in the Testimony (25:15) One way the Holy spirit can work in and through us is by sharing our testimony! Opportunity to Know God (26:20) Even in the hardest moments and struggles, we have an opportunity to know God in a new way. The power of our story can encourage others that they aren't alone. Though we have trials and hardships in life, rest assured that we get the honor of knowing Jesus and can still love and trust Him no matter what. He is faithful! Hope (27:20) No matter who you are or where you're at in life, God offers Hope. If we choose to cling to Him, our life is going to abound with more joy, love, and the ability to appreciate God’s grace more and more. CONNECT with Carrie Robaina by clicking here. In 1495, a mysterious and deadly plague struck the city of Naples. Over the next 500 years, the medical attempts to understand and treat this new disease -- syphilis -- would mold and shape medicine in surprising ways. In this episode, Tony Breu and I will perform an historical and physiological biography of syphilis, covering the development of germ theory, epic poetry, mercury saunas, intentionally infecting patients with malaria, magic bullets, and lots and lots of experiments on poor rabbits. This presentation was performed live at the American College of Physicians’ national meeting in Philadelphia on April 11, 2019. Effect on Emotions I think that everybody feels their emotions in a band and some people have a narrow band of emotions and some people have a medium band and some people have a very wide band, like a manic depressive would have a very wide band and some people are stoic and have a narrow band. I'm in the middle. And so I feel life intensely; both the ups and the downs and so my mindfulness has enabled me to manage that so that my band isn't too wide and hijack me in the process. Thoughts on Breathing Oh, I have to remind myself all the time. I sort of laugh at myself when I'm in the shower or I'm walking and I notice that I'm not even breathing. I'm like holding my breath and so deep breathing is such a wonderful skill to develop in terms of getting more peaceful and mindful. App: N/A Bullying Story I'll give you a personal example and then a business example. A personal example is I'm a gay man and I, I've been with my husband now for 35 years, but I've been very sensitive to watch how society has changed on its consciousness about gay and lesbian people. I also look at the 'Me Too' movement and women, and there were so many men who were abusing women and they weren't conscious of the fact that they were doing it. The norms were such that they could get away with it and women for their part may or may not have been conscious of being abused or they didn't want to talk about it and they developed their own consciousness to speak out and to be comfortable with their own personal power in the world. So those are examples where I think bullying has affected my life. In a real life example take ABC studios and Roseanne Barr. It's a great example. People knew Roseanne's track record and they knew her prejudices, but they wanted a hit series. They hired her and one wonders whether if they were a little more conscious and aware of the potential impact, the inevitable impact of Roseanne discovering that she can speak out and say her mind in the most prejudicial way, you know, maybe they wouldn't have made that investment.

My Grace is Sufficient And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Cor 12:9 Believers in the body of Christ must understand that no matter what we are facing, God's Grace is Sufficient. The grace of God is enough to endure the trials. God said it in His Word that He will never place more on You than You can bear!
