Send us a textWhat happens when a sudden ultimatum forces you to find a job overnight? Little did I know, this path would soon involve me in the Cabbage Patch doll phenomenon, handling name change requests and birth certificates amid the craze. Reflecting on these times, I ponder how the digital age has revolutionized the way we tackle tasks and access information.Get ready to wander down memory lane through the late '70s and early '80s, as we reminisce about discovering music through workplace radios and those nostalgic K-Tel compilation albums. We'll explore how song length plays into streaming stats and feel the psychedelic folk-rock vibes of Sid Barrett's "The Madcap Laughs." We look back at the first #1 song of the 70's "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" and its connection to the film 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.' It's the 40th anniversary of John Fogerty's "Centerfield" and believe it or not he was sued for sounding like himself. Let's reconnect with the musical tapestries that shaped our tastes. It's a celebration of musical diversity and the enduring impact of unexpected tunes on our lives."Music in My Shoes" where music and memories intertwine.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease Like and Follow our Facebook and Instagram page at Music In My Shoes. You can contact us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.com.

Playlist   Track Time Start Time Opening and Introduction (Thom Holmes) 11:57 00:00 1.    Herbie Hancock, Herbie Hancock Demonstrates The Rhodes Piano (1973 Rhodes). A terrific flexi-disc produced by Rhodes and narrated by Hancock who tells an interesting story about his first encounter with the instrument on a Miles Davis session and then he walks the keyboard through a series of effects. He speaks with the authority of a proud electronics tinkerer who understands the nuances that make this instrument so beloved by jazz musicians. This flexi-disc was originally delivered in the November 8, 1973 issue of Down Beat magazine. I provide both sides of the disc, in entirety. Tunes included during the demonstration include parts of Watermelon Man, Maiden Voyage, and The Spook. Soloist, Rhodes Electric Piano, Voice, Herbie Hancock. I thought it would be wisest to lead off this podcast with an overview of the Rhodes even though it is out of chronological sequence, being from 1973. We then go back a few years to hear tracks in proper time order. 12:48 11:57 2.    The Don Ellis Orchestra, “Open Beauty” from Electric Bath (1967 Columbia). Alto Saxophone, Flute, Soprano Saxophone, Joe Roccisano, Ruben Leon; Baritone Saxophone, Flute, Bass Clarinet, John Magruder; Bass, Dave Parlato, Frank De La Rosa; Bass, Sitar, Ray Neapolitan; Congas, Bongos, Chino Valdes; Drums, Steve Bohannon; Leader, Trumpet, Don Ellis; Percussion, Alan Estes; Piano, Clavinet, Fender Electric Piano Fender, Mike Lang; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Clarinet, Ron Starr; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Piccolo Flute, Clarinet, Ira Schulman; Timbales, Vibraphone, Percussion , Mark Stevens; Trombone, Dave Sanchez, Ron Myers, Terry Woodson; Trumpet, Alan Weight, Bob Harmon, Ed Warren, Glenn Stuart. 5:33 24:44 3.    Miles Davis, “Stuff” from Miles In The Sky (1968 Columbia). I think this was Miles' first album recorded using the Fender Rhodes, played by Herbie Hancock. See the opening tracks from this podcast for a story about this session from Hancock. Bass, Ron Carter; Drums, Tony Williams; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Herbie Hancock; Tenor Saxophone, Wayne Shorter; Trumpet, Miles Davis. 16:59 30:14 4.    Joe Zawinul, “The Soul Of A Village (Part II)” from The Rise & Fall Of The Third Stream (1968 Vortex). Zawinul, along with Hancock, was an early adopter of the Fender Rhodes. Cello, Kermit Moore; Double Bass, Richard Davis; Drums, Freddie Waits, Roy McCurdy; Percussion, Warren Smith; Piano, Fender Electric Piano, Joe Zawinul; Tenor Saxophone, Arranged by, William Fischer; Trumpet, Jimmy Owens; Viola, Alfred Brown, Selwart Clarke, Theodore Israel. 4:16 47:10 5.    Oliver Nelson and Steve Allen, “Go Fly a Kite” from Soulful Brass (1968 Impulse). Another Steve Allen record, whom we heard from in part 1 playing the Wurlitzer Electric Piano. Here is a selection from an album on which he plays the Rock-Si-Chord and occasional piano. Arranged by Oliver Nelson; Rock-Si-Chord, piano, Steve Allen; Drums, Jimmy Gordon; session musicians, Barney Kessel, Bobby Bryant, Larry Bunker, Roger Kellaway, Tom Scott; Produced by Bob Thiele. 2:30 51:24 6.    J & K “Mojave” from Betwixt & Between (1969 A&M, CTI). “J” is J.J. Johnson (trombonist) and “K” is Kai Winding (trombonist). Their ensemble included Roger Kellaway playing the electric clavinette. An example of using the clavinet in jazz. This was most likely a Hohner Clavinet Model C which had just been introduced in 1968. Recorded at Van Gelder Studios during late 1968. 2:31 53:54 7.    Albert Ayler, “New Generation” from New Grass (1969 Impulse). An electric harpsichord played by Call Cobbs adds some subtle comping to this buoyant tune written by Ayler, Mary Parks, Rose Marie McCoy. Baritone Saxophone, Buddy Lucas; Design Cover And Liner, Byron Goto, Henry Epstein; Drums, Pretty Purdie; Electric Bass, Bill Folwell; Piano, Electric Harpsichord, Organ, Call Cobbs; Producer, Bob Thiele; Tenor Saxophone, Flute, Seldon Powell; Tenor Saxophone, Vocals, Albert Ayler; Trombone, Garnett Brown; Trumpet, Burt Collins, Joe Newman; Vocals, The Soul Singers. 5:06 56:22 8.    Bill Evans, “I'm All Smiles” from From Left To Right (1970 MGM). Piano, Rhodes Electric Piano, Bill Evans; Bass, John Beal; Conducted, arranged by Michael Leonard; Double Bass, Eddie Gomez; Drums,Marty Morell; Guitar, Sam Brown; Liner Notes, Harold Rhodes, Helen Keane, Michael Leonard; Produced by Helen Keane. For his 24th solo album, the long-established jazz pianist Evans took his turn playing both the Fender Rhodes and Steinway acoustic piano on this album, as two-handed duets no less. Liner notes were written by Harold Rhodes, inventor of the Rhodes Electric Piano. 5:42 1:01:24 9.    Sun Ra And His Intergalactic Research Arkestra, “Black Forest Myth” from It's After The End Of The World - Live At The Donaueschingen And Berlin Festivals (1971 MPS Records). You can hear Sun Ra enticing other-worldly sounds from a Farfisa organ beginning at about 1:35. Recorded in 1970. Of the many electronic keyboards heard elsewhere on this album (and occasionally on this track), here the Farfisa is heard the most. Recorded at Ballon Theater, Cairo, Egypt December 17, 1971. Sun Ra playing several electronic keyboards in turn, the organ, Minimoog, and Rock-si-Chord. The great jazz funk flutist Bobbi Humphrey released a series of albums around this time that often-featured fantastic synthesizer players. Here you can pick out the Minimoog by Don Preston and the ARP (Odyssey?) by Larry Mizell. The synths included here are in contrast to the more experimental sounds that Herbie Hancock was issuing at the same time. This week, Martin from Film vs. Film Podcast joins us as we kick off a month of westerns with the movie that totally changed the genre, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford as the title characters. We talk about the perfectly balanced William Goldman screenplay that is equally hilarious and tragic, the exceptional director-cinematographer team-up of George Roy Hill and Conrad Hall, the iconic pairing of Newman and Redford that makes this film as much a buddy movie as a western, whether the relationship between Butch, Sundance, and Etta is a love triangle or a love circle, the "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" musical interlude, metafilm moments, the western as American mythology, and the many things to love about this once-dominant film genre. Nat King Cole [44:31] "Your Cheatin' Heart" Ramblin' Rose Capitol Records ST-1793 1965 (orignal release 1962) Perhaps Nat was taking a cue from Ray Charles' Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music? Jimmy Buffett [46:59] "Rancho Deluxe (End Title)" Rancho Deluxe United Artists Records UA-LA466 1975 I actually dig this soundtrack quite a bit. The film is a neo-western with a script by Tom McGuane. It is very much of its time, but if you can get past that, there are some excellent performances from Harry Dean Stanton, Slim Pickens, and Charlene Dallas. Also, Danny DeVito mimics Jimmy Durante, Steve Martin plays a sadistic dentist, Brad Garrett and Jeffrey Tambor perform a "want" song and Alan praises the talents of John Williams, Thomas Newman and Lin-Manuel Miranda. PLUS: "I'll Do Anything"! The influence of "Fantasia"! The comedy of Randy Rainbow! Alan wins a Razzie! And Bob Dylan turns down "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head"! Hour 1: The Yankees/Guardians Game 5 was rained out last night but they waited until after 9:30pm. That is MLB's call, not the Yankees. Gio was battling with meteorologist Matt Hammer last night, with Matt saying the game was going to be played 100%. It was not. The Yankees are now going with Nestor Cortes. Boomer says if he gets lit up, it's not Aaron Boone's fault as it's not his call. The Broncos continue to stink as they lost last night to the Chargers. Russell Wilson is hurt and may not play this week against the Jets. Jerry starts his update with audio from Evan Roberts yesterday afternoon saying there was no storm and the Yankees would definitely play. Chris McMonigle did an instant reaction to the rainout. A reporter has no idea how to say Taillon. Jerry has audio from last night's Broncos loss to the Chargers. Jerry goes through key injuries in the NFL. The Rangers beat Anaheim last night at MSG. In the final segment of the hour, Gio thinks Boomer doesn't trust Nestor Cortes on only three days' rest. Boomer says it's a panic move by the Yankees.  Hour 2: We played a throwback Al Dukes song from 2009 called ‘Raindrops Keep Fallin' on The Yanks'. The oddsmakers seem to think this is going to be a low scoring game. Gio thinks Boomer is rooting for Cortes to get lit up so he can be right about starting him on three days rest. A caller does not like Boomer's Yankees hatred but Boomer says he's rooting for the Yankees. Jerry returns for an update and has audio from Brian Cashman saying he was disappointed in last night's rainout. The Chargers beat the Broncos last night, but it took a FG in OT to get it done. Nathaniel Hackett evidently will need to ‘look at the tape'. The Giants and Jets are both underdogs this week. The Rangers beat the Ducks and Jerry has a goal call from Sam Rosen. The NBA season begins tonight. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer tells us Boston University created a more lethal coronavirus. Boomer says Judge has to take the highest offer, as he owes it to the MLBPA.  Hour 3: Why have we seen so many bad NFL games this season? Phil Simms told Boomer that offensive line injuries have been the key. The defenses are just plowing through injured offensive lines. The Eagles are 6-0 because they have one of the best offensive lines in football. Also, backup QBs hurt the game. Judy in Buffalo blames ‘the damn fans' for booing Aaron Judge and will blame them if he leaves. Jerry returns for an update but first Eddie plays a bunch of penis sound drops. Brian Cashman is sorry that the game got rained out and the fans showed up. Rob Saleh talks about playing with violence. Tom Brady says the Bucs aren't scoring enough points. The Rangers beat the Ducks last night at MSG and Jerry has some Sam Rosen sound. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the Broncos losing again last night. Will Nathaniel Hackett make it through the season?  Hour 4: If you're Shane Bieber, you have to want the ball tonight. Boomer says he's never pitched on short rest. We also talk about Nestor Cortes starting in place of Jameson Taillon. We took calls from Yankees fans on starting Nestor Cortes on 3 days rest. Jerry returns for his final update of the day and starts with meteorologist Matt Hammer apologizing for his 100% no rain guarantee last night. Evan Roberts also said all afternoon that there was ‘no storm' and he wasn't ‘buying any of this' when it came to the rain. NYC Mayor Eric Adams smells some weed. The Chargers beat the Broncos last night by a FG in OT. Nathaniel Hackett has to go back and look at a lot of tape. Russell Wilson may not play this week against the Jets. Rob Saleh- ‘effort, technique and violence'. In the final segment of the show, we talk about the ratings for Bills/Chiefs on CBS this past weekend. We talk to Jerry about sports Gods. Jerry says there are none.

Filmmaker Peter Fishbeast joins me from Belper in Derbyshire, England to discuss the 1969 George Roy Hill blockbuster Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, aka Dudes Rock: Origins. Butch Cassidy is a great example of the influence the French New Wave had on late sixties Hollywood cinema, as it transitioned towards the New American Cinema of the seventies. It's a western loaded with countercultural appeal and modern sensibilities, powered by an unexpected Burt Bacharach soundtrack that spawned the first No. 1 song of the seventies, "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head". Peter and I talk about the film's enigmatic director George Roy Hill, the magic of Paul Newman and Robert Redford as Dudes Rock avatars, William Goldman's screenplay being perhaps an unfortunate influence on today's quippy soy banter in modern blockbusters, and the film's forgotten prequel. Patrons of the Junk Filter podcast receive at least two additional exclusive episodes a month: some of our notable previous guests include Jared Yates Sexton, David Roth, Bryan Quinby, Will Sloan, Sooz Kempner, and Jacob Bacharach. The pop icon recalls having laryngitis while recording the soundtrack for 1969's Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid soundtrack, which would yield the Oscar-winning, Hal David and Burt Bacharach-penned megahit Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head. “I had been to the doctor a couple of days before we did the session and I could barely talk, B.J. tells Milling About host Robin Milling. “The doctor didn't want me to even speak for two weeks, let alone sing. He gave me a B12 shot and I got through the song after five times. Burt was quite upset that I wasn't in good shape but the 20th Century Fox guy said, 'Boy this is great. It sounds like maybe Paul Newman was singing! That's a great idea!'”

Today on The Caregiver Dave Celebrity Segment, Dave and Neil Haley will interview BJ Thomas No umbrella needed! It is all sunshine for American pop music icon BJ Thomas as he celebrates a golden milestone for his Oscar winning classic “Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head.” “It's hard to believe it's been fifty years since “Raindrops” went #1,” Thomas reflects. “I've sold over 70 million records, but I have to say I am most appreciative of this song. It was a career changer for me when it came along. More than that, it was a life changer—a true blessing.” The whimsical masterpiece was written by renowned dream team Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the December 1969 movie release “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid” starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman. While studio execs thought “Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head” was too unconventional and contemporary for what they knew would be a blockbuster western, they were proven wrong at the movie premiere when the audience exploded with delight at the famous scene featuring the song prominently played to the visual of happy-go-lucky Paul Newman riding a bicycle while he tried to impress his movie love Katherine Ross. Propelled by the movie's momentum, “Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head” crossed into a new decade on January 3, 1970 as the first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 where it remained for the next four weeks. It also took top spots internationally and for seven weeks sat in the pinnacle position on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Dirt or soil.  No matter what you call it, it's the one thing that in many ways is the beginning and ending of life for all of us.  It's beautiful, rich, and generous.  It moves and breathes, gives us untold wealth, and is the place we look to keep us fed and alive.  Usually.  Unless it loses its balance.     One of our favorite childhood books starts out with a only mild inconvenience, due to rain.  Dr. Seuss' “The Cat in the Hat” stared with two kids who wanted a little less boredom and a little more excitement:  “The sun did not shine.  It was too wet to play.  So we sat in the house.  All that cold, cold, wet day.”     At the end of Dr. Seuss' “The Cat in the Hat,” everything goes back to normal after Thing One and Thing Two destroy the universe, with the “excitement” part having been granted in a way that the kids never expected.  But in real life, sometimes the metaphorical Thing One and Two are still running amok for months or even years afterwards.       In today's podcast, Heather, Marie and Jeri are speaking with us about dirt, soil, rain, and the long-term consequences you don't really think about that can occur under our feet in that mysterious universe below.  And they're not as easily fixable when Mom comes home (one more reference for all you Seussians out there).     Whether you hope, wish or pray for rain, this lesson is a great one for all of us in California who sometimes look at the sky and long for something wet to appear.  Like we learned in “The Cat in the Hat”…wishing for something to alleviate the boredom, or the drought, can be a dangerous thing indeed when that wish is granted.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/agriCulturePodcast)

William Goldman is often credited as the first screenwriter to sell a spec script, meaning he wrote a script without getting paid for it then sold it once he was done with it. It's common in the novel-writing world, but in the late 60s, it was unheard of in the film business. That script was "The Sundance Kid & Butch Cassidy," which legendary producer Richard D. Zanuck, who was running 20th Century Fox at the time, optioned for twice what they were allowed to, knowing it was going to be big. And he was right. We continue our Couples On the Run series with George Roy Hill's 1969 western, "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid." Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we discuss the place this film has in the western genre and why it remains a classic to this day. We talk about the wonderful performances by Paul Newman and Robert Redford, and how Hill had to fight to get Redford on at the time because he was relatively unknown. We chat about Hill and Conrad Hall, the cinematographer, and what they both brought to the table. And we discuss Burt Bacharach's Oscar-winning turn for his score and song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head," and how well these anachronistic bits worked for us this go around. It's top-notch filmmaking and we love this movie. Tune in!
