In 1537, Cromwell had to investigate a sordid rumour about William Webbe's "pretty wench" and Henry VIII. It claimed the king had not only been unfaithful to his new queen, Jane Seymour, but had stolen another man's mistress and kept her for himself. The story spread so widely it ended up in Alison Weir's modern-day "Henry VIII: King and Court" and even inspired a scene in Showtime's "The Tudors" series. But what really happened? In this podcast, I investigate the 16th century sources to find out what really went on. Was this tale evidence of adultery, malicious gossip, or something darker? And what does it reveal about Henry VIII's reputation in the shadow of Anne Boleyn's downfall and his hasty marriage to Jane Seymour? Listen to discover: - The original 1537 letter that spread the rumour. - How Cromwell's investigation handled it and his conclusion. - Why The Tudors dramatised the story and changed the timeline. - Whether Henry's reputation was already beginning to unravel. Thanks for listening! Our August episode of Purely Academic is one of our busiest recordings to date, as Sean and Jonathan break down how they spent their summer vacations, and talk about the start of the new school year. Sean tells us about some of the legal insanity affecting education in Texas, while Jonathan explains why he created a bunch of feature-length anime fan edits for various classes he's teaching this semester. We discuss a bunch of video games both old and new, from Donkey Kong Bananza and Mafia: The Old Country, to Sean falling down the Dark Souls rabbit hole again and Jonathan finding himself many hours into a new playthrough of the original Pokémon Blue. Jonathan also talks about binging the entire run of Showtime's Dexter, and finally, Sean is up for The Monthly Ten, counting down the Top 10 podcast topics he would most dread doing. Free "Linguistica" App For over a decade we have been sharing free episodes wherever you listen to podcasts as part of our commitment to accessible language learning. Now, millions of downloads later, we want to offer you more. We just launched the Linguistica app which features free weekly articles in every level along with their interactive transcripts. Linguistica is ad free, doesn't require a login, and works for all of our languages: Spanish, French, Italian, and German. Install and start learning right away, it's that simple.

Warum will die EU dies tun?
Today I am sitting down with life long stand up comedian Carole Montgomery. Carole is a classic in show biz, a Brooklynite through and through, she has performed all over the United States, was on the road, in L.A., in Las Vegas. Being a stand up comedian has been her fulltime job. Until she turned 50.Her environment signaled her silently but clearly, that her time is done, over, chapter closed. She shifted and worked as a producer, comedy teacher, and writer to stay connected in the business. At 59 she had a break through idea: Funny Women of A Certain Age. A stand up comedy show featuring older comedian women. With a talent pool of about 100 artists, Carole has been producing shows for the past ten years, TV channel SHOWTIME made three Comedy Specials with Funny Women of A Certain Age.Listen to a conversation about ageism, about how funny never gets old, and about facing the truth. Carole loves playing for younger audiences, she is not afraid, as they look at her as though she's Yoda. ####On another note: I am so proud and excited to announce that SHIFT HAPPENS' Season 5 is supported by London based jewellery brand Tilly Sveaas. Annette Allison brought the sunshine of Brisbane to the television screens of Melbourne and beyond in a career than spanned decades and many and varied roles. Fondly remembered for hosting Channel 10's Good Morning Melbourne and for a time the nightly news, Annette also interviewed the creme de la creme of visiting celebrities. When they didn't come here, she went to them, as she reminisces about the French jaunt to chat to His Royal Highness the Aga Khan and fly on his personal jet. Another colourful 'royal' Annette recalls dearly was the man behind the television show King's Kitchen - the late, great Bernard King, a longtime friend from her Brisbane days. Annette gifts us one of Bernard's showstopping recipes for inclusion for our It's Showtime segment and it's a gift that will keep on giving. Our Food Poll drips with nostalgia as we head to the refrigerated section and ask which of four classic ice cream favourites is your favourite. You can only pick one and the nominees are Barney Banana, Choc Wedge, Golden Gaytime or the Drumstick. Other ways to Express Future.

This week, Kim Masters speaks to Severance director and cinematographer, Jessica Lee Gagné. The Quebecois filmmaker reflects on her collaboration with Severance executive producer Ben Stiller, which began on the Showtime limited series Escape at Dannemora. She discusses becoming the first woman to be Emmy-nominated in the same year for both cinematography and directing in a drama series, and the major leap of faith it took to transition from a successful career as a DP into the world of directing. Plus, Disney is reshaping its sports strategy, launching a standalone ESPN app, and making billion-dollar deals with WWE and the NFL. Will the NFL's new stake in ESPN bring scrutiny from the Trump-led DOJ? Also, the Skydance-Paramount deal is done, and the Ellisons may have their sights set on Warner Bros. Kim Masters and Matt Belloni break it all down.
