Why He Turned Back 200 Meters from the Summit | Aaron Bethune

What if the most important thing you'll ever know about yourself has never actually been said out loud? Not because you're hiding it. Because somewhere along the way you built a fortress around it, and the fortress has no windows. Today's guest understands that fortress from the inside. At 19 years old, a week after his birthday, Aaron Bethune stood 200 meters from the summit of Aconcagua, one of the world's Seven Summits. He turned back. Not because he could not make it. Because he realized he had never once visualized the descent. On the way back down, alone, he found an Everest veteran named Mike lying in the snow, lost and frostbitten, meters from a three- thousand-meter drop. Aaron gave him his food and water and carried him down. He has never seen Mike since. He has been looking for him for twenty-six years.  Aaron Bethune is the founder of We Write Stories, author of Musicpreneur (now used as a university textbook), and a musician since age four who has worked with Showtime, Spotify, MTV, and the Grammys. He led a project for the Gwich'in First Nations to help protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In this conversation, Aaron and Dov unpack why the most capable leaders spend their entire careers focused on the ascent, and have no strategy for the descent when it inevitably comes. They examine Aaron's philosophy of doneness, why it is not spiritual bypassing, and how leaders who have hit every mark of success often plateau because they cannot access the multidimensional range that got them there in the first place. The conversation closes on the survival story most people have never excavated and why naming it may change the trajectory of a life.    Topics include:    Why standing in a stadium of strangers dissolves loneliness Why Patagonia stays true to one thing  Why AI can only look at the past  The spruce tree branch that went through Aaron's leg at a monastery.  Jumping into the cold water as far as you can throw yourself  Panic attacks and the path to understanding how the mind works  The fortress with no windows. Nina Alvarez joins Dr. Sandie Morgan to unpack a question raised after The New York Times published images from Figueroa Street: was legal consent enough to prevent harm? Together they explore the ethical duty of care journalists owe survivors, the lasting life of images, and why covering trafficking responsibly takes more than good intentions.Chapters(00:00) - Introduction: welcoming journalist Nina Alvarez (03:46) - What "ethical duty of care" means for journalists (06:00) - Consent, trauma, and the limits of a release form (16:42) - Why "rescue" is the wrong word for trafficking recovery (22:14) - What editors and organizations should ask before publishing (28:44) - Power, images, and protecting sources long after publication (38:03) - Media narratives, public misunderstanding, and what needs to change (43:14) - Closing thoughts and how to get involved About Nina AlvarezNina Alvarez is a journalist, documentarian, video photographer, and the CBS Assistant Professor of International Journalism at Columbia Journalism School. She has spent more than twenty-five years reporting breaking news, feature stories, radio reports, broadcast segments, and long-form documentaries around the world.Alvarez began her career at ABC News, working on the documentary series Turning Point before covering the southeast U.S. and Latin America from ABC's Miami Bureau and helping establish the network's Mexico City Bureau in 1997. Her work has aired on World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, Good Morning America, Nightline, and 20/20, earning three national Emmy Awards.Since 2001, she has reported and produced for Univision, NBC, CNN, NPR, MTV News, and Al Jazeera, with work spanning the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. She produced, directed, and photographed Very Young Girls, a Showtime documentary following New York City girls who had been sexually exploited and trafficked domestically, and was a producer on the Oscar-nominated Which Way Home.Key Points• Nina Alvarez explains that the ethical duty of care means weighing the lasting impact a story will have on the person in it, since a published story is permanent and the subject may not fully grasp what that means when they agree to participate.• Consent is not the same as a signed release form; Alvarez describes consent as an ongoing process that journalists have to revisit before, during, and after a story is published.• Alvarez points out that turning 18 makes someone legally able to consent, but it doesn't erase the effects of years of trauma, so journalists still have to weigh whether a survivor's "yes" is solid.• Morgan and Alvarez agree that "rescue" is the wrong frame for trafficking recovery, since most survivors leave and return to their situations multiple times before they're fully out.• Alvarez explains that rescue-centered narratives draw more funding and legislative attention toward policing, while recovery-centered approaches that give survivors housing and health resources get less support.• Alvarez says editors should be asking why minors' first names and identifying details were included in a story at all, and whether a survivor understood that their words to police would end up published nationally.• Alvarez encourages organizations to set ground rules with journalists, including reviewing the story and images in advance, and warns that survivors who depend on an organization for access may feel pressure to say yes.• Alvarez reflects that Very Young Girls, made in 2007, didn't anticipate how permanently images would circulate online, and the women in that documentary now say they can never fully escape those images.Resources• Figueroa Street and the Ethical Duty of Care (Columbia Journalism Review)• Very Young Girls (documentary)• GEMS (Girls Educational and Mentoring Services)• Humanitarian Initiative Bridges• Columbia Journalism School

As first reported in Bloomberg's "Screentime" newsletter, executive leadership is actively trying to diagnose this mass viewer abandonment. Theories include the multi-year gap between seasons, that dropping an entire season creates a burst of convo that flames out quickly, and the vicious cycle of cancellations.

What happens when two people with complicated pasts — failed marriages, sobriety journeys, and a chance meeting at a 4th of July party — fall in love but decide not to move in together? Claudia and Jonathan join us for a conversation as layered and surprising as the indie film they made together, D(e)AD — a project born from personal heartbreak, an ex-husband who may or may not have faked cancer, and the haunting feeling that the not-so-great people from our past never fully leave us. They'll take you behind the scenes of making a movie with friends and family, funding it through Kickstarter, and then getting it into theaters one screen at a time — from cities across the US to London to Bosnia — all while navigating the soul-crushing gauntlet of festival rejections, fake IMDB credits, and music licensing processes that take six months just to say no. Along the way, Claudia opens up about using her parents and daughter as the raw material of her art, and why storytelling is how she survives. We also get into Jonathan's origins — from writing a fake Nightline to a history with cartoons and the discipline of keeping art beautifully simple — and the question that ties it all together: would you trade your messy, painful, hilarious past for a different one?  And how, bubble wrap can save your sanity. Bio:   Claudia Lonow started her career as an actress, playing Michele Lee's chubby, loud-mouthed teenage daughter on “Knots Landing.”  Favorite episodes include: the one where she has kidney failure and is saved by Donna Mills kidney; the one where she runs away with the town murderer, “Chip,” and drives her mother to drugs; and the one where she almost loses her virginity, but instead winds up donning clown make up and singing “Put On A Happy Face” with her mom. Lonow's next career was waitressing.  She did stand up comedy for a while, working across the country and doing some television.  When she gave her best joke to Sarah Silverman, and Silverman killed with it, a writer was born. Her television-writing career took off when she wrote a semi-autobiographical spec pilot about a former nighttime soap opera television actress who gets sent to rehab, called “Rude Awakening.”  Showtime bought the show, which ran for 55 episodes.  Lonow has been creating and writing television ever since: “Good Girls Don't” for Oxygen; “Accidentally On Purpose” for CBS and “How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest Of Your Life)” for ABC.  Lonow moved into directing with the award winning shorts, “Bummed” and “Keep Calm and Tampon.” Lonow just completed directing and acting in her first feature, the very indie film, “D(e)AD” written by and starring her daughter, Isabella Roland, her partner Jonathan Schmock and pretty much everyone else in her family. She is currently developing various other TV and film projects, has gotten back to stand up and is threatening to do a solo show. Jonathan Schmock is an actor, director, comedian, show creator, artist and Emmy nominated writer, (group Emmy but still). As a stand-up he was half of the comedy team The Funny Boys with Jim Vallely. As an actor you've seen him in such varied things as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Star Trek Enterprise, The Big Bang Theory, Arrested Development, Shameless, The Simpsons, The Mentalist (the guy who did it) and NCIS Los Angeles (the guy who didn't) among others. As a writer/director he co-created Sabrina, The Teenage Witch and Brotherly Love and worked as an executive producer/writer on Dharma and Greg and Good Girls Don't, Real Time and many more. Most recently he acted in and produced the indie film D(e)AD, which can be seen and purchased online, (hint.)  His editorial cartoons can be seen at jonathanschmock.com. His paintings have appeared in a group show at the L.A. County Museum of Art, (no shit.) He hopes to continue writing about himself in the third person for many years to come. “The Agency” approaches espionage less as a series of action beats and more as a study in information, perception, and control. The show is at its absolute best when it leans into that tension, allowing seemingly ordinary conversations to simmer with unease while drawing on its wealth of densely fleshed-out characters, each carrying their own agendas, vulnerabilities, and secrets. Conversations are rarely straightforward, motives are constantly in question, and even routine interactions can reshape the balance of power inside the CIA. In Season 2, the Paramount+ with Showtime drama deepens those tensions, following agents and analysts as personal loyalties, institutional pressures, and a growing sense of distrust begin to collide. But this time around the action and pacing is increasing by the second.Based on the acclaimed French series “Le Bureau des Légendes,” “The Agency” follows Michael Fassbender as Martian, a CIA agent whose personal and professional lives continue to collapse into one another. Season 2 picks up with Martian still trying to save Samia, played by Jodie Turner-Smith, while the agency itself is pulled into a wider web of internal suspicion, shifting loyalties, and a mole hunt that turns the office into its own kind of battlefield.READ MORE: ‘Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed': Tatiana Maslany, Jake Johnson, David Gordon Green & David Rosen On Lonely Screens, Bad Decisions, ‘She-Hulk,' ‘Spider-Verse' & More [Bingeworthy Podcast]The series also stars Jeffrey Wright, Richard Gere, Katherine Waterston, John Magaro, Dominic West, and more. And truly, one of the joys of Season 2 is watching a cast this deep make even the smallest exchanges feel like fully loaded scenes. Wright, who plays Henry Ogletree, and Magaro, who plays Owen Taylor, both spoke with Bingeworthy host Mike DeAngelo about the new season, the ensemble's unusual chemistry, and what it takes to make all that spy-world jargon feel lived-in rather than laminated.

Duran Duran's eponymous debut not only established their sound with funky bass and new wave synths but coincided with the launch of new US cable station, MTV. With their danceable beats, the boys stylish brand of new wave was perfect fot the 80s and perfect for MTV. It introduced a whole new generation of American music fans into Anglophiles including your hosts The Wolf & Action Jackson. We, like all of the MTV Generation, were not only grooving to John Taylor's funky bass but were fascinated by their fashion, haircuts and models that always seemed to find them. In the UK, they got on the charts and even went Top 10 in Australia with Planet Earth in the spring of 1981. But it was MTV that launched them to superstardom in the US. Simon LeBon's vocals complemented the textures coming from Nick Rhodes synths and Andy Taylor's guitar but his presence in the videos gave them a wider audience. The videos shot in Antigua for the Rio album are MTV greats but the macabre Night Boat was also filmed there and is creepier than Anyone Out There or Careless Memories. The Girls On Film video was censored in parts of the US and a racier edition could be found on Showtime, much to the delight of two young suburbanites. To give the US market more material in 1983 ahead of the Seven and the Ragged Tiger album which would come out in the fall, the debut was rereleased with a slightly different order and the new single Is There Something I Should Know? It went to #1 in the UK and went into heavy rotation on MTV, helping to drive the album platinum. The most loaded episode of Receipts & Reactions to date. John Cash pulls up the receipts on four stories that have the culture completely out of pocket... and gives you everything the internet is talking about, unfiltered. This week: Drake makes Billboard history with three albums dropping simultaneously... and the song that broke Michael Jackson's all-time record is called "Janice STFU." Tony Hinchcliffe tells a George Floyd joke at Kevin Hart's Netflix roast and sends the internet into full meltdown... and Kevin Hart has to hit The Breakfast Club to explain himself. Floyd Mayweather gets declared a father by default because he refused to show up to court... and gets ordered to pay almost a million dollars in back child support.  And Red Lobster announces it's closing its Times Square flagship location on June 14th after 23 years. Plus: it's Pride Month. Love is love. We see you. ───────────────────────────────────── IN THIS EPISODE ───────────────────────────────────── DRAKE — ICEMAN, HABIBTI & MAID OF HONOUR Drake dropped three albums simultaneously and made history. ICEMAN debuted at #1, HABIBTI at #2, and MAID OF HONOUR at #3 on the Billboard 200... the first artist ever to hold the top three spots at the same time. Then "Janice STFU" debuted at #1 on the Hot 100, making Drake the solo male artist with the most #1 singles in Billboard history... surpassing Michael Jackson's record of 13. John breaks down the numbers, delivers the quip of the year, and asks the debate question your comments section won't stop arguing about. THE ROAST OF KEVIN HART — NETFLIX CONTROVERSY On May 10th, Netflix aired The Roast of Kevin Hart live from the Kia Forum in LA. Tony Hinchcliffe's George Floyd joke ignited immediate backlash. Chelsea Handler called it racist. Kevin Hart went on The Breakfast Club to defend himself and said, "Remove me from it. I didn't say it." John has the full breakdown, the actual joke, the fallout, and the talking points including what Katt Williams said that night that nobody is discussing. FLOYD MAYWEATHER — DEFAULT JUDGMENT, DEFAULT DAD A Nevada court declared Floyd Mayweather the father of a four-year-old girl named Price Moorehead... the daughter of a dancer at his own Las Vegas strip club, Girl Collection. Floyd was served legal papers twice, ordered to take a DNA test, and ignored all of it. The judge gave him a default judgment and ordered him to pay $933,050 in back child support plus $32,850 per month. Floyd has paid $151,000. There's also a $7.3M IRS tax lien. And a $340 million Showtime lawsuit. John's got all the receipts. RED LOBSTER — TIMES SQUARE CLOSING JUNE 14TH The Times Square flagship location at 5 Times Square is closing permanently on June 14th, 2026 — ending a 23-year run in one of the most visible dining locations in the world. The building is being converted to residential apartments. John gives the Cheddar Bay Biscuits the send-off they deserve. ───────────────────────────────────── CONNECT WITH JOHN CASH ───────────────────────────────────── Stream on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and everywhere podcasts are available. Robert meets Belfast-born Kathryn Ferguson is an Emmy and BAFTA nominated, BIFA and IFTA winning director whose innovative and boundary-pushing documentary work has screened globally. We explore art as activism and how film has the power to reveal, and more widely share, untold stories. Kathryn studied at Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, and in 2022 was awarded the inaugural BFI & Chanel Award for Creative Audacity. In 2018, Kathryn's short documentary Taking the Waters premiered at Sheffield Doc Fest, and was long-listed for a BAFTA. Then, in 2021, Kathryn worked with Passion Pictures on the short Space to Be for The Guardian's acclaimed documentary series. After a decade of short-form work centred on identity, gender politics, and community, Kathryn recently completed her debut feature documentary Nothing Compares - which takes as its subject Sinéad O'Connor's artistry and activism. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2022 then toured the international festival circuit, where it picked up multiple awards, before hitting cinemas in October 2022. It has received over thirty award nominations internationally, including Emmy, Critics Choice, IDA, and PGA Awards, and was awarded winner of Best Feature Documentary at BIFA 2022 and IFTA 2023. Nothing Compares is now available to watch on Showtime and Sky. Her second feature, Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes (Universal), was released in US cinemas in 2024. In 2024 she also co-founded Tara Films with producer Eleanor Emptage; their latest, Blue Road - The Edna O'Brien Story, premiered at TIFF 2024, and the company is currently developing a slate of non-fiction and drama projects. Alongside her film work, Ferguson has directed campaigns for Nike, Selfridges, Amnesty International, and Air France, and collaborated with artists such as Lady Gaga and Neneh Cherry. Nostalgie, Kathryn's first drama short starring Aiden Gillen, about a faded 80's pop star, has recently been nominated for a BAFTA and won Best Short Film at the IFTAs 2026. The film is available to watch on Channel 4. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
