Tomás Hardiman is a film producer and a survivor of childhood abuse. His recent documentary “The Days of Trees” tells the story of his own experience of childhood sexual abuse, and his long road to recovery. In this conversation, Tomás reflects on the years he spent in the dark, his gradual process of healing, and how he was able to convert his deepest childhood wound into a creative project - a documentary that is now impacting people all over the world. Gabor Maté had this to say about it: 'It's all about healing and transformation, a person finding themselves… I really urge you to see it. A beautiful film.' Here are some of the things we explore in this discussion: — How memory, shame, and repression often intertwine in trauma — Why Tomás almost walked away from the film — The role of creative work in transforming suffering — How Tomás has been able to forgive the seemingly unforgivable. And more. You can watch the film at https://thedaysoftrees.com/ and get 50% off if you use the code: TWU50 when purchasing. --- Tomás Hardiman holds a B.Comm from NUI Galway (1979) and an M.A. in Film and Television Studies from Dublin City University (1992). After graduation he worked in human resources in Dublin before living for a time in Toronto, where he began a professional career in the theatre as General Manager of Mercury Theatre Company. Following his return to Ireland he was appointed Marketing/Publicity Director of The Abbey Theatre where he worked from 1985 to 1993. He then returned to Galway where he ran his own communications and independent film production company, Parzival Productions. From October 2002 to November 2007 he was Managing Director of Galway Arts Centre and the Cúirt International Festival of Literature. He was a member of the board of Theatre Forum, the representative group for Irish arts organisations, from 2005-2007. He continues to produce and manage creative projects across multiple artforms and in 2013 completed a three-year training programme to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique. He produced eleven films between 1998 and 2023. Most recently he collaborated with acclaimed Irish writer/director Alan Gilsenan, to produce a loose trilogy of films about psychological trauma: Meetings with Ivor, The Meeting and The Days of Trees. The latter won the George Morrison Award for Best Documentary at the 2024 Irish Film and Television Awards. --- Interview Link: — Tomás' website - https://thedaysoftrees.com/

In this transformative episode of Healthy Waves, host Sana sits down with Ben O'Loghlin—entrepreneur, wellness educator, and Alexander Technique teacher—to uncover how chronic pain isn't always physical, but often neurological. Ben shares his riveting journey of overcoming debilitating back pain not through medication or surgery, but by rewiring his brain's pain response. With over 30 years of experience and remarkable success stories from his students, Ben breaks down the cognitive science behind pain, the role of “bad tension,” and how a simple practice of inhibition can offer lasting relief. If you've been stuck in a cycle of treatments that don't work, this episode is your invitation to think differently—because real healing might just begin in your mind. About the Guest:Ben O'Loghlin is the founder of BackRepublic.com, a wellness platform offering cognitive-based solutions to chronic back pain. After suffering years of daily pain himself, Ben discovered the Alexander Technique—a neuromuscular re-education method—and now teaches others how to release harmful tension and retrain their nervous systems. Based in Australia, Ben combines science, personal experience, and mindful movement to help people live pain-free without pills, appointments, or invasive therapies. Key Takeaways: 90% of back pain is non-specific and often stems from neural tension patterns, not physical injury. The Alexander Technique retrains the brain to stop sending harmful tension signals to the body. Healing starts by “inhibiting” the instinct to fix pain—simply pausing and observing can begin to release chronic tightness. Studies show an 80%+ reduction in pain days per month through these non-invasive practices. True relief lies not in doing more, but in re-learning how to be in your body without fear or force. Can you be a gay actor, a man of faith, and a bold truth-teller in an industry that often expects you to pick one? This week, John Corella sits down with actor and LGBTQ+ activist Danny Franzese, best known as Damian in Mean Girls. Danny shares what it was like to play an openly gay character while still closeted in real life, and how that disconnect shaped his early career. The conversation pulls back the curtain on what many actors face behind the scenes, especially when their identity challenges what the industry expects or understands. Danny also introduces a less-talked-about influence in his journey: the Alexander Technique. For him, it wasn't just a posture tool. It became a way to find alignment, physically and emotionally. How do you carry yourself when no one's watching? Can you feel present in your own skin, even in chaos? Danny makes a case for the connection between movement, intention, and inner peace. John and Danny also discuss the ongoing debate around representation in the media. Should gay roles be reserved for gay actors? What does authentic storytelling really require, and who gets to tell which stories? This episode is part personal story, part thoughtful critique, and part reminder that the body, the voice, and the truth all deserve space. Danny brings depth, humor, and honesty to a conversation that speaks to anyone who's ever wondered whether they're “too much” to be fully seen. https://chriscillizza.substack.com/p/tim-walz-has-a-bad-case-of-main-character Chris Cilizza writes: Tim Walz was a dud as vice presidential pick. He added zero to the ticket. In his one big moment — the vice presidential debate with JD Vance — he got beat. Badly. And looked hopelessly out of his depth. None of this is to say that if Kamala Harris had picked someone other than Walz she would be president right now. History tells us that VP picks almost never make any real difference. And I think that's true this time too. Had Harris picked, say, Josh Shapiro, she still would have lost. To my mind then, Walz was a sort of historical blip. Plucked from relative obscurity by Harris and then, after losing, sent back to that relative obscurity. Which isn't nothing! Being a governor of a state is a big deal! Being the VP nominee is a huge deal! But, in politics, water usually finds its level. And Walz's level was not — and is not — national politics. This is obvious to anyone who has spent any amount of time covering or watching politics. It is not obvious, however, to Tim Walz. Since the election loss, Walz has slowly but surely tried to fashion a narrative that he was under-utilized during the campaign. And that had he been properly deployed a) he would have shined and b) Harris might have won. According to Google AI: Main Character Syndrome (MCS) is a colloquial term used to describe a person's tendency to see themselves as the central figure in their own life story, often with an inflated sense of self-importance. Characteristics: Exaggerated sense of significance Belief that their experiences are more important than others Self-centeredness and lack of empathy Need for attention and validation Drama queen tendencies Difficulty accepting criticism Viewing others as supporting characters in their story MCS can have negative impacts on relationships, work, and overall well-being. It can lead to: Strained relationships due to self-centeredness, Difficulty collaborating with others, Overconfidence and poor decision-making, and Increased anxiety and depression. If you suspect you have MCS, it's important to: Reflect on your behavior and identify areas where you can improve. Develop empathy and consider the perspectives of others. Set realistic expectations about your importance. Seek professional help if needed to address underlying psychological issues. Meet Jonathan Drake who teaches rowing using Alexander Technique methods. Timestamps 01:00 Jonathan is an expert in rowing, Tai Chi and the Alexander Technique. His awareness of his co-ordination issues comes from being an Alexander teacher. Insights into how adults learn. His book is Rowing from the inside out: The art of indoor rowing with on the water in mind. https://amzn.to/4hCYAGz What is it like to scull on the water while you're learning to row indoors? 05:00 The Mind Body Connection Understand how rowing is "in your head" and how to connect this to what your body does. Ingrained movement habits are hard to change especially as you get older. Move more lightly, freely and less movements creating tension. 06:00 The origins of the Alexander Technique Pulling your neck forwards and downwards creates tension in the rowing stroke. Feel how the dynamic opposition of one part of the body connects or separates from another part. Using your body changes through the rowing stroke. In the power phase the spine lengthens and changes at the finish before lengthening again on the recovery. The perspective is novel - indoor and outdoor rowing combined with Alexander Technique and Tai Chi. Learn from the inside rather than copying someone else from the outside. 10:00 There's a sequence in the feet - pushing off the balls of your feet causes calves to tighten and then after your heels are down and the stroke finishes, people lift the balls of their feet again. That's why they strap in their feet tightly. The basic dynamic is through the feet - the inside of your heels means you access the whole of your foot arch, this gives you the power you need to perform rowing while sitting dynamically. 11.45 The benefits of AT and teaching rowing It gives you more awareness of when you're using more effort than necessary. Engage in the journey yourself because you cannot teach what you do not know. You can get results without all the effort. Encourage your athletes not to strap in your feet from the beginning. How to hold the handle without gripping (creates tight wrists and shoulders). When you understand about how to control the blades in the water - feather into your fingers - you can use your fingers on the indoor rower in the same way. 15:30 Using AT principles The key to coordination is the relationship between the neck, the head and the back. If your neck stiffens it creates spinal compression and tension. Our habits feel comfortable. Come to a state of quiet to help the body to organise itself. Learn to do less in order to achieve more. At the start of the drive the connection comes from the feet, then moves into the legs / hips / back and into the arms. As the recovery begins the pelvis takes the energy into the arms and body. Ed Coode, rowed for Great Britain in Athens 2004 - he was taught AT. 20:00 The book is very clear on how you teach. When Jonathan is on the rowing machine he views each stroke as a potentially new experience. Use them as an opportunity to be constantly refining and improving your movement patterns. It's never too late to make improvements. The book has links to video clips on YouTube to show what to do. Experts said the focus is effective, tapping into the sense among many Americans that they have been left behind. In a sit-down interview with Fox News last month, President Trump and his billionaire “efficiency” advisor Elon Musk framed new tariffs on foreign trading partners as a simple matter of fairness. “I said, ‘Here's what we're going to do: reciprocal. Whatever you charge, I'm charging,'” Trump said of a conversation he'd had with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I'm doing that with every country.” “It seems fair,” Musk said. Trump laughed. “It does,” he said. “It's like, fair is fair,” said Musk, the world's richest person. The moment was one of many in recent months in which Trump and his allies have framed his policy agenda around the concept of fairness — which experts say is a potent political message at a time when many Americans feel thwarted by inflation, high housing costs and other systemic barriers to getting ahead. “Trump has a good sense for what will resonate with folks, and I think we all have a deep sense of morality — and so we all recognize the importance of fairness,” said Kurt Gray, a psychology professor at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and author of the book “Outraged: Why We Fight About Morality and Politics and How to Find Common Ground.” “At the end of the day,” Gray said, “we're always worried about not getting what we deserve.” Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEYmda1KQTjrhLBeWutKuGA/join https://odysee.com/@LukeFordLive, https://rumble.com/lukeford, https://dlive.tv/lukefordlivestreams Superchat: https://entropystream.live/app/lukefordlive Bitchute: https://www.bitchute.com/channel/lukeford/ Soundcloud MP3s: https://soundcloud.com/luke-ford-666431593 Code of Conduct: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=125692 http://lukeford.net Email me: lukeisback@gmail.com or DM me on Twitter.com/lukeford, Best videos: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=143746 Support the show | https://www.streamlabs.com/lukeford, https://patreon.com/lukeford, https://PayPal.Me/lukeisback Facebook: http://facebook.com/lukecford Book an online Alexander Technique lesson with Luke: https://alexander90210.com Feel free to clip my videos. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological condition that impacts an estimated 2.8 million people worldwide. This week we explore the science behind MS, treatment options, and the lived experiences of those navigating life with this chronic illness. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) has been called "the disease of 1000 faces" for good reason - it manifests differently in almost every person it affects. Understanding MS: The Science Behind the Disease Dr. Zied Tayeb, neuroscientist and CEO of MyelinZ, explained the fundamental mechanism of MS in terms anyone can understand: "The brain communicates using electrical signals. These signals travel from one neuron to another through axons, which are protected by myelin sheets that help accelerate the transmission of these signals. In MS, the immune system mistakenly attacks these myelin sheets, leading to demyelination.” This disruption in communication between neurons explains why MS symptoms can vary so dramatically - the location of demyelination determines which functions are affected. "It could be the motor cortex, resulting in mobility issues, or the visual cortex, causing problems with vision," Dr. Tayeb noted. While the exact cause of MS remains unknown, researchers have identified several factors that may contribute to its development. According to our panel, MS is significantly more prevalent in women, who represent approximately 65% of MS patients - possibly due to women's more active immune systems making them more susceptible to autoimmune conditions like MS. Geographic distribution also offers clues, with higher rates in regions farther from the equator such as Canada, northern United States, and parts of Europe (with Denmark having a particularly high prevalence). This pattern has led scientists to investigate a potential link with vitamin D deficiency, though studies remain inconclusive. The Patient Experience: Hassan's Journey Few stories illustrate the unpredictable nature of MS better than that of Hassan Nada, entrepreneur, journalist, and self-described "MS warrior." Hassan's first symptom appeared in 2018 when he suddenly lost vision in his right eye while on holiday in Egypt. "I woke up one day, and out of nowhere, my vision was blurry to the point where I thought I was blind," Hassan recalled. Despite seeing an ophthalmologist, his condition went undiagnosed as MS. His vision eventually returned after treatment with corticosteroids. Four years later, after moving to Luxembourg, Hassan experienced sciatic nerve pain and numbness in his lower body. His general practitioner recognized the connection between his previous episode of optic neuritis and his current symptoms, immediately suspecting MS. "She screamed at me and had me go to the ER right away," Hassan shared. After extensive testing, including MRIs, blood tests, and a spinal fluid sample, the diagnosis was confirmed: Hassan had multiple sclerosis. The emotional impact of this diagnosis was profound. "My life changed from that moment onwards, and I went into complete depression," he admitted. But through the unwavering support of his wife and access to modern treatments, Hassan has found ways to adapt and advocate for others with MS. Treatment Approaches: Managing an Incurable Condition While MS currently has no cure, Dr. Tayeb emphasized that it is treatable. "Notwithstanding the fact that MS is incurable, it is treatable," he stated. "The problem is that every patient is different. The trajectory of the progression, diseases, symptoms are different.” Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) aim to slow the progression of MS by suppressing or modulating the immune system. These treatments vary widely in their administration methods (pills, injections, infusions) and side effect profiles. Hassan's treatment journey illustrates the often challenging process of finding the right approach. After being diagnosed, he was unable to receive his doctor's first-choice treatment due to having a virus that made it dangerous for him. He then tried a pill-based DMT that, despite its high success rate with other patients, didn't work for him. Finally, he found success with a monthly subcutaneous injection called Kesimpta. "Last week I went to the neurologist office depressed," Hassan shared. "I was like, 'I know it didn't work.' She's like, 'No, it actually worked. There are no new lesions. You can now make long-term plans in life.'" Innovative Approaches: The Brain's Virtual Gym Dr. Tayeb and Samaher Garbaya, co-founders of MyelinZ, are taking a different approach to MS management. Their "virtual gym for the brain" uses neurotechnology to promote neuroplasticity - the brain's ability to form new neural connections. "We're trying to promote neuroplasticity in the brain," Dr. Tayeb explained. Their platform uses games to stimulate specific brain regions while measuring brain activity. Using machine learning, they analyze six different digital biomarkers to create personalized brain exercises. This approach draws inspiration from research showing that activities like playing musical instruments or singing can activate certain brain areas, potentially slowing disease progression by strengthening neural pathways. The Role of Support: Community and Family Multiple speakers emphasized that MS affects not just the individual but their entire support network. Anne Leurs, who manages the Multiple Sclerosis Society in Luxembourg, noted that MS typically appears between ages 20-40 - a critical period when people are building careers, starting families, and establishing their adult lives. "It's a very difficult period, this period of diagnosis," Anne observed. "It's a chronicle disease. This means that you will have to live your life on with this disease.” Hassan's experience underscores the crucial role of support systems. "MS either breaks a couple or it makes them the strongest couple in the world," he remarked. When first diagnosed, he told his wife she should leave. "She's like, 'It's because I love you that I'm not leaving, and we're going to make it out of this stronger than ever.'" Five years later, she remains his "backbone," managing his appointments and ensuring he takes his medications. For those without close family support, community organizations like the Multiple Sclerosis Society provide vital resources, information, and connection. Complementary Approaches: The Mind-Body Connection Mariette Lentz, a Luxembourgish soprano who specializes in the Alexander Technique, offered insights into complementary approaches that can help manage MS symptoms and improve quality of life. The Alexander Technique is "a mental technique" focused on "exploring the relationship between our thoughts and our movement," Mariette explained. While not a therapy or cure, it offers tools to help reduce stress and bring the nervous system to a calmer state - particularly valuable for MS patients who often experience anxiety related to their unpredictable symptoms. This, naturally, is a method that can help us all. The Daily Reality Hassan painted a vivid picture of what daily life with MS can entail: "Imagine waking up every day of your life with the worst hangover in the world without having to drink.” Despite this challenge, he maintains a positive outlook and has channeled his experience into advocacy work, connecting with MS communities around the world. "I'm disclosing some personal parts of my life in hopes that it's actually going to benefit people," he explained. Looking Forward: Hope in Research and Community While MS remains incurable, advances in treatment options continue to improve outcomes for patients. From traditional DMTs to innovative approaches like brain-computer interfaces and neuroplasticity training, the landscape of MS management is evolving rapidly. As our conversation demonstrated, the combination of cutting-edge medical science, dedicated healthcare professionals, strong personal support systems, and community resources creates a foundation for living well despite MS. For those navigating the complex journey of MS - whether as patients, family members, or healthcare providers - knowledge and community remain powerful tools. By continuing to share stories like Hassan's and insights from experts like Dr. Tayeb, Samaher Garbaya, Anne Leurs, and Mariette Lentz, we can work toward greater understanding and better support for everyone affected by this challenging condition. https://myelinz.com https://www.msweb.lu/wp/

Google AI: Shame and rage are often interconnected, with many people experiencing intense anger as a defense mechanism against feelings of shame, essentially using rage to mask or deflect the painful experience of feeling inadequate or worthless; this can create a cycle where experiencing shame triggers anger, which can then further exacerbate feelings of shame if expressed in destructive ways. Key points about the relationship between shame and rage: Defensive mechanism: When someone feels deeply ashamed, they may turn to anger as a way to protect themselves from the vulnerability and pain associated with shame, often projecting these feelings onto others. "Shame-rage cycle": This describes the dynamic where experiencing shame can lead to a burst of anger, which can then further fuel feelings of shame if the anger is expressed in a way that is self-destructive or damaging to relationships. Underlying feelings of powerlessness: Shame can often be associated with feeling small, powerless, or defective, which can trigger a desire to lash out with anger to regain a sense of control. Impact of childhood experiences: Individuals who experienced significant criticism or abuse during childhood may be particularly prone to experiencing a strong link between shame and rage, as they may have learned to use anger as a coping mechanism for deeply ingrained feelings of inadequacy. https://statmodeling.stat.columbia.edu/2012/09/12/niall-ferguson-the-john-yoo-line-and-the-paradox-of-influence/ Andrew Gelman: "Life is continuous but we think in discrete terms. In applied statistics there's the p=.05 line which tells us whether a finding is significant or not. Baseball has the Mendoza line. And academia has what might be called the John Yoo line: the point at which nothing you write gets taken seriously, and so you might as well become a hack because you have no scholarly reputation remaining. John Yoo, of course, became a hack because, I assume, he had nothing left to lose. In contrast, historian Niall Ferguson has reportedly been moved to hackery because he has so much to gain." Steve Bannon has changed his tune on Elon Musk. He's now complimentary. Bannon is Trump's id. Along with Russ Vought, Musk "is taking the most extreme action possible." https://www.nytimes.com/2025/02/28/us/politics/musk-federal-bureaucracy-takeover.html The team is now moving faster than many of the legal efforts to stop it, making drastic changes that could be hard to unwind even if they are ultimately constrained by the courts. Mr. Musk's associates have pushed out workers, ignored civil service protections, torn up contracts and effectively shuttered an entire agency established by Congress: the U.S. Agency for International Development. A month into Mr. Trump's second term, Mr. Musk and his crew of more than 40 now have about all the passwords they could ever need. His repeal came via three executive orders, two issued on Inauguration Day. The first overturned dozens of Biden decrees, including the “Advancing Racial Equity” executive order signed in the first hours of his presidency in 2021. The second ended all initiatives, offices, contracts, and employees connected to DEI, which Trump referred to as “illegal and immoral discrimination programs.” The decisive blow came the following day. In an order called “Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-Based Opportunity,” Trump repealed a variety of executive orders, including 11246, and explicitly barred the OFCCP from enforcing affirmative action. And his Office of Personnel Management followed through on the previous day's business, ordering that all DEI federal employees be sent home, all DEI federal contracts be terminated, and all efforts to pursue federal DEI programs under another name be rooted out. RIP affirmative action. But that is only part of the story. A curious element of Trump's third executive order is its invocation of the president's “solemn duty” to enforce “longstanding Federal civil-rights laws,” mentioning the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This is not a concession. It's a threat. While the Civil Rights Act mentioned “affirmative action” it attached no specific meaning to the term, and the law was resolutely color-blind. Affirmative action programs, with their differing treatment of races, are in tension with it. DEI programs, many of which scapegoat white people, are even more so. It is Trump's assertion that DEI programs “violate the text and spirit of our longstanding Federal civil-rights laws.” Trump is doing more than reforming the public sector. He is signaling to the private sector that certain kinds of programs are liable to prosecution, even asking each federal agency to name up to nine large private-sector organizations that might be engaged in discrimination. Google AI: The O.J. Simpson trial divided Americans along racial lines, with most Black people believing he was innocent and most White people believing he was guilty. Reaction to the verdict Black Americans Many believed Simpson was innocent and that justice had been served. Some believed the verdict was a response to past injustices against Black people. White Americans Many believed Simpson was guilty and that the verdict was racially motivated. Impact of the trial The trial exposed racial divisions in the United States. It also highlighted the deep-seated resentment that many Black people had for the U.S. criminal justice system. The trial's legacy continues to impact how Black and white Americans view the justice system. Poll results In 1994, 22% of Black respondents to a Washington Post-ABC News poll said they thought Simpson was guilty, versus 63% of white people. In 2015, a Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 57% of Black people saw O.J. as ``probably or definitely guilty''. Glenn writes: Noah Smith is a very good writer and a very bad analyst of international affairs. He seems to spend a lot of time huffing and puffing himself into a fit about the notion that there is a “New Axis” of unmitigatedly belligerent totalitarian powers cartoonishly hell-bent on overturning the U.S.-led liberal international order and unleashing tyranny on the people of the world. The main thrust of his writing over the past several years seems to be that the United States needs to totally reorient its economy and society in order to fight “Cold War 2” against the New Axis.1 You can generally ascribe Smith's errors to either of two common perceptual biases in U.S. national security thinking: The Fundamental Attribution Error: Smith tends to impute the malfeasance of U.S. adversaries to their inherent nature, while chalking up U.S. and allied behavior to circumstance. Threat Inflation: He treats any challenge to U.S. hegemony or international security from a U.S. adversary as if it's the end of the world, and when evidence is ambiguous, he interprets it to that effect. Yesterday, Smith reposted an article he wrote last year, “Japan, South Korea, and Poland need nuclear weapons immediately,” that illustrates both of these errors very well. He argues that, although it is unfortunate that more democratic countries would need to acquire nuclear weapons, it is necessary for them to proliferate because they face intolerable threats to their security from the insatiable revisionist Sino-Russian Axis and they can't trust the United States to defend them. Moreover, because U.S. adversaries are already developing nuclear weapons with the help of Russia and China, controlled proliferation to U.S. allies would not be exceedingly costly to the international order. Smith is wrong on both counts. There is no evil Axis, and it does not pose a looming threat to the survival of U.S. allies in Europe and Asia. There is also no Russian or Chinese conspiracy to undermine the global nonproliferation regime and spread nuclear weapons to U.S. adversaries — more of a paranoid delusion than a serious assessment of the facts about international security. https://statesofexception.substack.com/p/japan-south-korea-and-poland-dont Join this channel to get access to perks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCEYmda1KQTjrhLBeWutKuGA/join https://odysee.com/@LukeFordLive, https://rumble.com/lukeford, https://dlive.tv/lukefordlivestreams Superchat: https://entropystream.live/app/lukefordlive Bitchute: https://www.bitchute.com/channel/lukeford/ Soundcloud MP3s: https://soundcloud.com/luke-ford-666431593 Code of Conduct: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=125692 http://lukeford.net Email me: lukeisback@gmail.com or DM me on Twitter.com/lukeford, Best videos: https://lukeford.net/blog/?p=143746 Support the show | https://www.streamlabs.com/lukeford, https://patreon.com/lukeford, https://PayPal.Me/lukeisback Facebook: http://facebook.com/lukecford Book an online Alexander Technique lesson with Luke: https://alexander90210.com Feel free to clip my videos. https://www.axios.com/2025/02/20/trump-maga-month-transforms-america President Trump's first month in office has exceeded the wildest dreams of his most loyal supporters, and the darkest nightmares of his fiercest detractors. Why it matters: Both groups can agree: The America that Joe Biden left behind on Jan. 20 is no longer recognizable, erased in four frenetic weeks by an empowered, implacable and historically popular MAGA presidency. Like Trump 1.0, the firehose of news and norm-busting behavior is — and will continue to be — the defining feature of this administration. Unlike Trump 1.0, the chaos is calculated — and explicitly designed to institutionalize MAGA, paralyze the president's enemies and permanently break the Washington establishment. Zoom in: Above all else, Trump's first month has been dominated by his war on the federal bureaucracy — and his various efforts to prod, probe and blow through the limits of presidential power. The White House's early attempt to freeze federal funding has set the stage for a massive legal fight over Congress's "power of the purse," which is laid out in Article 1 of the Constitution. Elon Musk and his DOGE allies are slashing and burning their way through government agencies — cheered on by the MAGA faithful as they fire thousands of federal workers, sometimes with reckless abandon. The rapid dismantling of USAID and the government-wide assault on DEI have sent clear signals that any programs misaligned with Trump's MAGA will be on the chopping block. The Department of Education could be next. At the Justice Department — which haunted both Trump's first term and his next four years as a private citizen — the purging of career prosecutors and FBI agents has punctured any veneer of independence from the White House. Between the lines: Trump and Musk's shock treatment of the U.S. government has overshadowed the two main issues that dominated the 2024 campaign: immigration and inflation. In our first Share the Chair episode of 2025, we welcome talented jazz musician and educator, Tobi Stone. Tobi has played an important part of CH's own journey into jazz musicianship, and after almost a year's worth of planning (yes, really!), finally got the chance to sit down to talk all-things musical life journey - from Tobi discovering her passion for music at a young age; to knowing early on that she wanted to teach in addition to perform; to the key influences and experiences that have helped shape her career - including recovering from an early injury during her time studying jazz performance at the University of Washington. Tobi's uplifting approach to music education, and her ongoing efforts to support aspiring young musicians - especially female musicians - is all part of her goal to create an inclusive, empowering environment that blends the art of playing with the joy of teaching. Whether you're a jazz enthusiast, an aspiring musician, or simply curious about the life of a professional musical artist, this episode has a little bit of everything. Show Notes For those looking for more information on Tobi, you can visit her official Web site, Tobi Stone Music (tobistone.com). Some key highlights: Her full list of credits and in-depth biography can be found under the About Tobi section of her site. She has several key performances scheduled for the first part of 2025 that can be found under the Performances section of her site. A key callout performance will be May 9, 2025 at the Black Box Theatre in Olympia, Washington. It will be a tribute performance for one of her saxophone teachers, Bert Wilson. It is part of the Washington Center for Performance Arts Women In Jazz Series. The influential substitute teacher that inspired and influenced Tobi's early appreciation for the saxophone is professional saxophonist, Darren Motamedy. The non-profit Tobi has started that aims to elevate musicianship of under served communities is called Kindred Blue Notes. Additional information can be found on KindredBlueNotes.org. Tobi also is a long-standing faculty member of Seattle's Jazz Night School, where she teaches various combos and also offers private lessons. The technique Tobi referenced that is used as an alternative treatment to improve both voice and posture for people in the performing arts is called the Alexander Technique. James Lipton's Inside the Actor's Studio questionnaire, and the original Bernard Pivot/Marcel Proust versions that inspired it, can be found here.
