Better grab something to write with before you hit play on this one. In this extra-long episode, we dive into a variety of horror sub-genres and each pick a title that we think defines that category. Not necessarily the best film, but one that captures the essence of the sub-genre in a meaningful way. To help us take on this ridiculously huge (but fun) challenge, we've brought back Aaron Christensen—aka Dr. AC—to join the conversation. If you're new to the genre, this one's especially for you.  If you've been around a few years (or decades) we think the conversation is still worth your time, and we hope that you consider giving a few of these a revisit.  Time to start that new watchlist!  All set? Notes ready? Coffee or energy drink in hand? Then hit play! Titles mentioned in this episode: 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958), Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948), Abbott & Costello Meet the Mummy (1955), Alien (1979), Army of Darkness (1992), Audition (1999), Bad Taste (1987), Baskin (2015), The Beyond (1981), Black Christmas (1974), Black Sabbath (1963), Blair Witch Project (1999), Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992), Bride of Frankenstein (1934), Bring Her Back (2025), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), Carnival of Souls (1962), Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972), Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), Creepshow (1982), Cruel Jaws (1995), Curse of Frankenstein (1957), The Devil's Wedding Night (1973), Dracula (1931), Evil Dead 2 (1987), The Exorcist (1973), Fight Club (1999), Frankenstein (1931), Frankenstein Must Be Destroyed (1969), The French Connection (1971), Gamera vs. Barugon (1966), The Giant Claw (1957), Godzilla (1954), Godzilla vs. Hedorah aka Godzilla vs the Smog Monster (1971), Ju-on: The Grudge (2002), Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985), The Haunting (1963), Hellraiser (1987), Hereditary (2018), Horror of Dracula (1958), Horror Rises from the Tomb (1973), The Host (2006), The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies (1964), Island of Lost Souls (1932), It Follows (2014), Jacob's Ladder (1990), Jaws (1975), King Kong (1933), Kwaidan (1964), Lair of the White Worm (1988), Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971), The Monster (2016), Nekromantik (1988), Nightbreed (1990), Night of the Living Dead (1968), One Missed Call (2003), Onibaba (1964), Paranormal Activity (2007), Paranormal Activity 2 (2010), Paranormal Activity 3 (2011), Phantasm (1979), Pieces (1982), Possession (1981), Psycho (1960), Pumpkinhead (1988), The Raven (1963), Re-Animator (1985), Repulsion (1965), Return of the Living Dead (1985), Ringu (1998), The Ritual (2017), Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Sadness (2021), Satan's Sadists (1969), Saw (2004), Scream 5 (2013), Scream VI (2023), Seeding of a Ghost (1983), The Seventh Curse (1986), Shatter Dead (1994), Shaun of the Dead (2004), The Shining (1980), Suspiria (1977), Terrified (2017), Terrifier (2016), Tetsuo (1989), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), The Thing (1982), Things (1989), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Toxic Avenger (1984), Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010), The Ugly Stepsister (2025), Uzimaki (2000), Vampyros Lesbos (1971), Viy (1967), What We Do in the Shadows (2014), When Evil Lurks (2023), The Wicker Man (1973), Young Frankenstein (1974)

Send us a textMeet MacKenzie Lee, a Boston-based singer-songwriter who's crafting a unique musical identity she calls "dark pop." Stepping into our studio with the confidence of someone who's found her authentic voice, Mackenzie shares the winding path that led her from childhood singing to college acapella performances and finally to her current work with Red 13 Records. What makes MacKenzie's approach fascinating is her refusal to be boxed into conventional genres. Drawing inspiration from artists like Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, she's equally influenced by comedic musicians such as Bo Burnham and The Lonely Island—creative minds who blend impressive musical ability with clever, thought-provoking content. This unexpected combination hints at an artist determined to create music that's both emotionally resonant and intellectually engaging. The conversation takes us through Mackenzie's formative experiences, including how her acapella background trained her ear to deconstruct songs into their component parts. "You really learn to appreciate every single piece that goes into a song," she explains, describing how this shapes both her listening habits and creative process today. We also discover the emotional significance behind the grand piano visible during our interview—a treasured inheritance from her grandmother, the only other musician in her family. After discussing Mackenzie's debut single "Bad Taste on Love" and her upcoming release "The Ghost of Us," we shift to the latest country music news, covering artists like Chris Stapleton and Miranda Lambert supporting Texas flood victims. The episode culminates in a spirited debate about the greatest vocal collaborations of all time, with listeners passionately defending their favorites from Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton to modern pairings like Jason Aldean and Carrie Underwood.LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.comVirtually You: https://www.virtuallyyouva.com/ Support the show

There have been many horror writers that have been important to the genre, but few have had the outsized impact of the one and only Chas. Balun. Whether it was his work in Fangoria, Gorezone, or his own magazine Deep Red, even if you didn't see his name at the head of the article, you knew it was him within a few sentences, by either by the tone of the writing, or maybe the films he was covering. Chas' style was humorous and more than a little confrontational, but he was always waving the flag in support of movies that he felt were important and hadn't received enough attention. Sure, they tended to be on the gory side, but for Chas. it wasn't just about the gore. Not entirely, anyway. While the three of us knew his work and the impact it had on us personally, for this very special episode, we felt we needed to talk with other folks who were just as impacted by him, and also knew him personally. In the second half of the show, you'll hear from John Szpunar, author of Xeroxferox: The Wild World of the Horror Film Fanzine and Blood Sucking Freak: The Life and Films of the Incredible Joel M. Reed; Art Ettinger, editor at Ultra Violent magazine; and finally Shawn Lewis, creator of Rotten Cotten and Eibon Press. They all share their own stories of Chas, and we all discuss the profound the impact Chas. had on us and on the horror genre in general.  Don't miss this one! Films mentioned in this episode: Abomination (1988), Bad Taste (1987), The Beyond (1981), Beyond the Darkness (1979), Blood Sucking Freaks (1976), Blue Velvet (1986), Braindead (1992), Bug (1975), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), City of the Walking Dead (1980), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), The Exorcist (1973), Friday the 13th (1980), Guinea Pig 2: The Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985), Hell of the Living Dead (1980), Last House on Dead End Street (1973), Last House on the Left (1972), Mad Ron's Prevues from Hell (1987), The Nest (1987), Night of the Demon (1980), The Omen (1976), Pieces (1982), Splatterfest Exhumed (2024), Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Zoltan: Hound of Dracula (1977), Zombie (1979)

Welcome to Director Watch! On this AwardsWatch podcast, co-hosts Ryan McQuade and Jay Ledbetter attempt to breakdown, analyze, and ultimately, get inside the mind of some of cinema's greatest auteurs. In doing so, they will look at their filmographies, explore what drives them artistically and what makes their decision making process so fascinating. Add in a few silly tangents and a fun game at the end of the episode and you've got yourself a podcast we truly hope you love. On episode 96 of the Director Watch Podcast, the boys discuss the first film in their Peter Jackson series, Braindead (1992). The journey for the boys to talk about Peter Jackson has taken a long road, winding road to get here, much like the director's acclaimed trilogy. But in one of the more fascinating careers of the last thirty years, Peter Jackson saw a rise to fame after years of making scrappy, independent horror-leaning films that landed him a couple of big checks that became some of the most known films of the 21st century. By 1992, Jackson had already made two films; lesser known titles Bad Taste and Meet the Fables (which the guys give their brief thoughts on at the beginning of the episode). But it was his third film, Braindead, that was his breakout; a zombie comedy splatter film about a son's relationship with his needy mother that turns gory when she is bitten by a hybrid rat-monkey creature and begins to transform into a zombie. In the vein of the Evil Dead franchise, Jackson goes all out with the gore and mayhem to allow for a unique, memorable horror experience like no other. Ryan and Jay breakdown their thoughts on the film, the level of gore and blood in Braindead, ponder how this guy went on to make the films that he did, discuss their favorite kills in the film, preview the rest of the Jackson series and explain why this was the right time to finally do this series. You can listen to the Director Watch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music and more. This podcast runs 1h48m. The guys will be back next week to continue their series on the films of Peter Jackson with a review of his next film, Heavenly Creatures. You can rent it via iTunes and Amazon Prime rental in preparation for the next episode of Director Watch. Till then, let's get into it. Blake has done it again! After bringing us cinematic gems like Surf Nazis Must Die, Bad Taste, and the legendary disasterpiece The Room, our resident connoisseur of chaos has picked another fever dream for us to unravel—Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles. If Bad Taste showed Jackson's love for over-the-top gore, Meet the Feebles proves he was just as committed to pushing the boundaries of decency, this time with puppets.Meet the Feebles was envisioned as a satirical take on the entertainment industry, blending puppetry with extreme violence, crude humor, and dark social commentary. The project was initially planned as a television series but evolved into a full-length film when Jackson and his team realized the scope of their chaotic vision. The film was produced on a shoestring budget in Jackson's native New Zealand, with much of the work done by a small, dedicated team—including many who would later go on to work on The Lord of the Rings. The puppets were created by hand, with their grotesque designs pushing well beyond anything audiences had seen in traditional puppet-based entertainment. Despite limited distribution and a niche audience at the time of release, Meet the Feebles has since gained a cult following, solidifying its place as one of the most bizarre and audacious films in Jackson's early career. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackTrailer Guy Plot SummaryIn a world... where puppets have problems just like the rest of us—only much, much worse—one variety show is about to become a full-blown disaster. Behind the curtain of The Fabulous Feebles, drug deals are going down, backstabbing is rampant, and the star of the show, Heidi the hippo, is on the verge of a total meltdown. As betrayals stack up and tensions reach a breaking point, this cast of misfit puppets hurtles toward an explosive, blood-soaked finale. From the twisted mind of Peter Jackson comes a no-holds-barred assault on good taste—get ready to Meet the Feebles!thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Mary Crocker Cook, Ph.D, has over 40 years of experience as a therapist. Her latest book is Bad Taste, Self-Care, and Financial Planning for Women with Bad Taste in Men. In its own way, it's a love letter to people like her who, along the way, do not always choose wisely when it comes to men.  It's for women who are working through early life experiences to create a richer, more joyous life in the present. I know there is a community of women out there who are struggling to create "upgrades" in their selection process, and along the way, we still get derailed. This little book is an attempt to give women harm reduction strategies so that when they stumble, it's not off the cliff! As a therapist, I have watched countless smart, funny, responsible, loving women choose mates unwisely. I am glad my home girl encouraged me to write my thoughts down because I have had conversations over the years with so many women, and I know how hard they try to make what can seem insurmountable relationships work.
