On today's episode, we speak with director Joe Wright whose new limited TV series Mussolini: Son of the Century, explores fascism through the early political career of Italy's Prime Minister Mussolini in the 1920s. The show is incredible storytelling from beginning to end, mixing opera and techno rave music while drawing chilling comparisons to the current rise of fascism around the world.  “We all have a dark side. We all have the choice to be the best of ourselves, or the worst of ourselves and we usually land somewhere in the middle. Working on Mussolini allowed me the opportunity to look at my relationship with my own masculinity and it helped me understand the man I want to be,” says director Joe Wright about the way he personalized Benito Mussolini's story to make it more accessible to a modern audience, adding, “I wanted the audience to be at times seduced by him, and then in a Brechtian sense, to kind of pull the rug from underneath their feet, and ask them to apply some critical distance.”  Wright also discusses what he learned about storytelling growing up with his parent's puppet theater, his early films like Pride and Prejudice, and dealing with his own self-doubts as a filmmaker by making a movie about Winston Churchill called Darkest Hour.    “Darkest Hour is a movie about doubt. When I made that movie, I just made a movie called Pan, which the critics hated and lost a huge amount of money. I was sort of consumed afterwards by self-doubt. I was thinking, what have I got to say? I can't reach audiences anymore, I'm out of step. So, then the opportunity came along to do Darkest Hour, and I immediately perceived it as a story about a little man who was consumed by self-doubt, and who was doubted by others all around him. Yet he persevered and overcame enormous odds to lead a nation at their darkest hour. So, for me, that became a story worth telling,” says Wright. To hear more, listen to the podcast.

Today, Professor Kozlowski tackles the preeminent development in political philosophy of the twentieth century - and spectre overhanging the twenty-first: Fascism and Totalitarianism. We'll examine Italian Fascism with Mussolini's own "The Doctrine of Fascism" as well as Umberto Eco's 2001 essay "Ur-Fascism"; Nazism with the Extra History video series Nazi Occultism and Folding Ideas' video essay "Triumph of the Will and the Cinematic Language of Propaganda"; and, finally, we'll read an excerpt of Hannah Arendt's compendious The Origins of Totalitarianism. This year will mark the 100th anniversary of the iconic Alfa Romeo P2's debut. Designed by the legendary Vittorio Jano, the P2 went on to dominate Grand Prix racing in the final two years of the 2-Liter formula. In 1925, Alfa won the first World Championship after which the team duly withdrew from the sport. However, privately owned Alfa P2s continued to participate in racing and win races up until 1930. The sporting achievements of the Alfa P2s are well known, as is the role the car played in establishing Alfa Romeo as Italy's most famous racing marque up until the advent of the Second World War. Less known is the broader significance of the P2 that went well beyond the racetrack. Informed by the history of objects developed by cultural historians, this paper argues that the P2's significance was industrial, cultural, and ultimately political. The achievements of the P2 and the emergence of the Milanese based Alfa company coincided with the establishment of Mussolini's dictatorship in Italy. The Fascist regime used the Alfa's successes to celebrate the rise of Fascist Italy as an industrial and sporting power. Moreover, the unique characteristics of the P2 came to embody the values promoted by fascism such as speed and dominance. Both the design and performance of the car, as well as the men who raced it, came to shape not only Grand Prix racing in the 1920s, but also impacted the role played by the sport in the political and cultural context of Fascist Italy. La vicenda che ha visto come protagonisti gerarchi e scagnozzi del Terzo Reich, all'indomani della sconfitta subita alla fine della Seconda guerra mondiale, con la conseguente fuga dalla Germania occupata, ha per certi versi tratti grotteschi e quasi paradossali. In questo saggio divulgativo, basato sulle ultime e più recenti ricerche storiche, Mauro Tonino indaga sul fenomeno generale che ha portato molti esponenti di primo livello, e ancor più numerosi gregari del regime, ad approntarsi un dorato esilio, complici istituzioni, governi, uomini di potere che a vario titolo hanno permesso che questo accadesse. Soffermandosi su diversi casi in particolare l'autore descrive in modo efficace e ricco di risvolti un capitolo della storia recente in buona parte ancora da studiare e approfondire.La storia non procede mai in linea retta, spesso segue percorsi tortuosi. La storiografia, il più delle volte, dipinge i fatti e i personaggi a tinte forti, con colori netti, ma invece è tra le sfumature che si possono comprendere la portata degli avvenimenti e le reali intenzioni dei protagonisti.Dopo i primi fulminei, quanto effimeri, successi tedeschi, lo scenario bellico della Seconda guerra mondiale si delineava a favore degli Alleati e avverso alla Germania di Hitler. Agli inizi del 1944 la situazione sul campo appariva oramai compromessa per i tedeschi, e man mano che passavano i mesi già si tratteggiava l'esito finale, anche se in quei momenti non era ancora chiaro come e quando.Solo chi credeva ancora nella mitica arma segreta in grado di ribaltare le sorti del conflitto confidava nella sopravvivenza del III Reich, ma qualche nazista, più realista e conscio dell'imminente crollo del regime, cominciava a pensare a quello che nel lessico comune odierno è chiamato il “Piano b”, ovvero una via di fuga.L'epilogo del conflitto comportò conseguentemente la caduta del III Reich. Era poi prevedibile che, a vittoria conclamata, i vincitori sostituissero la classe dirigente tedesca precedentemente compromessa con il regime nazista, e così fu, Berlino divisa in quattro e la Germania in due, Est e Ovest.Allo stesso tempo appariva probabile che, russi e Alleati, alla fine delle ostilità, intendessero presentare il conto alla nomenclatura nazista per le efferate azioni compiute, infatti fu istituito già alla fine del '45 il Processo di Norimberga che portò alla condanna, spesso a morte, di molti esponenti nazisti di spicco.A Norimberga furono processati tutti i principali responsabili delle condotte criminali naziste?La risposta è no, vuoi per il gran numero di personalità che a vari livelli concorsero alla tragica epopea hitleriana, anche se in effetti buona parte dei personaggi di spicco nazisti ancora in vita furono condotti alla sbarra, ma non tutti, molti criminali riuscirono a dileguarsi, sfuggendo, almeno in quel momento, alla giusta condanna.La grande storiografia tende a minimizzare il fenomeno della fuga dei criminali nazisti, ma non furono pochi quelli che riuscirono a scappare, e tra essi spiccavano figure che, per gli atti compiuti, non erano state certamente di secondo piano, anzi.È proprio su questo argomento che la storia si tinge di colori sfumati, di punti poco noti, di percorsi sotterranei, di vie di fuga impensabili, di fatti per certi aspetti ancora oscuri che, per la scabrosità, ma soprattutto per l'ambiguità dei soggetti coinvolti, rischiano di perdersi nell'oblio della storia stessa.Mauro Tonino, è stato sindacalista di livello regionale e nazionale, animatore e presidente di circoli culturali. We'll drill down on the concept of Birthright Citizenship — enshrined by the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.  The 14th Amendment does not equivocate. It states, “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof are citizens of the United States.”  A president cannot change those facts with a stroke of his pen.We will introduce to you in detail the concepts of jus soli and jus sanguinis.Jus soli: The principle of law also known as birthright citizenship is the principle that a person's citizenship is determined by the place of their birth, regardless of the parents' nationality.It contrasts with jus sanguinis, which determines citizenship based on parentage.On January 20, 2025, President Trump signed an executive order trying to end birthright citizenship. Specifically, the order states that after February 19, 2025, citizenship will only be granted to babies born in the United States if at least one parent is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.Birthright citizenship stems from the principle of jus soli, that all children born in the United States are U.S. citizens. Birthright citizenship has remained a bedrock of our country and was enshrined in our constitution in 1868 when the states ratified the Fourteenth Amendment. The Fourteenth Amendment was ratified to repudiate the infamous Dred Scott decision that denied Black people the protections of U.S. citizenship. The wedding was a carefully stage-managed affair, capped with a blessing by Mussolini himself. “Italy, Gentlemen, wants peace, wants quiet, wants work, wants calm; we will give it with love, if that be possible, or with strength, if that be necessary.” This is the story of Italy's Benito Mussolini's creation of fascism and rise to power in interwar Italy. Benito starts life the way his father intended—as a socialist—and the often moving, young schoolteacher quickly emerges as a leading voice in the movement as he's entrusted to serve as the editor of one of the party's most important newspapers. But the Great War changes that. Benito supports it, the party doesn't, and by the conflict's end, the returned soldier has a new idea—one that takes him across the political spectrum, all the way from the Marxist left to the nationalist far-right—a violent, war-glorifying, anti-democratic, one-party, dictatorial version of nationalism. He calls it “fascism.”  Benito speaks of order. Economic prosperity. National pride. Some see his black-clad fighting squads, known as “Blackshirts,” as their saviors from the far-left's communism, so feared in the wake of the recent Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. Indeed, many Italians welcome his march on Rome and his growing powers as Prime Minister, and celebrate his foreign policy achievements, including a reconciliation between Italy and the Vatican.  But as Benito kills Italy's constitutional monarchy in all but name as he turns into a dictator, conquers Ethiopia, ignores the League of Nations, and bonds with Germany's rising dictator Adolf Hitler, former allies are growing concerned. Some fear his anti-democratic path will also embolden Germany. As W.E.B. Du Bois questions: “If Italy takes her pound of flesh by force, does anyone suppose that Germany will not make a similar attempt?” Only time will tell.
