DAN McCAFFERTY THE VOICE OF NAZARETH October 14, 1946 – November 8, 2022 'THE LOST INTERVIEWS' EPISODE 9 Scottish Rocker Dan McCafferty has been the quintessential and charismatic frontman for hard rock veterans Nazareth since the band's inception in 1968. McCafferty has fired up live audiences across the globe for 45 years with a heavy dose of undisputed hardcore crooning power. Most recently McCafferty has retired from touring with Nazareth due to a lung disease that makes breathing extremely difficult called COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Dan McCafferty will pass the microphone over to Nazareth's new frontman, 41-year-old Linton Osborne of Rosyth, Scotland. McCafferty will cease touring but will not cease recording in the studio. In fact, McCafferty and Nazareth have recently released a mammoth new hard rock gem entitled ‘Rock ‘N' Roll Telephone.' The album features Dan McCafferty on lead vocals, Pete Agnew on bass, Jimmy Murrison on guitars, and Lee Agnew on drums. It's the band's 23rd studio album and their first since 2011.The CD features 11 original heavy rockers and bluesy ballads. The deluxe digipack edition will include a second disc with two additional studio recordings and five live tracks and will also be available in a double LP gatefold vinyl version. Invigorating and commanding hardcore rock ‘n' roll are back, just the way we remembered it ...It's the rock we all listened to and partied with in high school …I gave ‘Rock ‘N' Roll Telephone' by Nazareth (5) Stars. NAZARETH: Over the years …critics and music aficionados alike have correlated Dan McCafferty's vocal styles with such artists as AC/DC's Brian Johnson, Slade's Noddy Holder, and Humble Pie's Steve Marriott. The band supported Deep Purple on tour during several occasions which led to Purple's bassist Roger Glover producing their third studio album entitled Razamanaz (1973). Subsequent Glover produced albums included … Loud ‘N' Proud (1973) and Rampant (1974). In 1975, while looking for a new direction, Nazareth appointed lead guitarist Many Charlton as their new producer. The band's new order resulted in their biggest selling album to date entitled …Hair of the Dog. The album spawned the self-titled hard rock classic “Hair of the Dog” and their popular Top 40 hit “Love Hurts” (1975 #8 U.S. Billboard Hot 100) a cover track penned by Boudleaux Bryant and first recorded by The Everly Brothers (1960) and Roy Orbison (1961). Nazareth has maintained modest popularity in the U.S. while enjoying significant acceptance in Europe. Across the globe, Nazareth remains a consistent concert-pleaser. Former band members that have contributed to the success of Nazareth were … original drummer Darrell Sweet (1968- 1999, Sweet died in 1999), original lead guitarist Manny Charlton (1968-1990), Zal Cleminson on guitars (1978-1980), Billy Rankin on guitars (1980-83,1990-94), John Locke on keyboards (1980-82, Locke died in 2006), and Ronnie Leahy on keyboards (1994-2002). I had the great pleasure of chatting with legendary Nazareth frontman Dan McCafferty recently about the band's brilliant new CD entitled… ‘Rock ‘N' Roll Telephone' … The inception of Nazareth October 14, 1946 – November 8, 2022 Support us on PayPal!

In this episode we welcome the splendid Holly Gleason, all the way from downtown Nashville, and invite her to tell us about her life as a country music writer and publicist.Holly explains how, as a teenage championship golfer, she first became enamoured of country in her native state of Ohio, later writing about it (as well as about rap and R&B) for the Miami Herald. Tying in the episode's main theme with Woman Walk the Line – the wonderful essay collection she assembled and edited in 2017 – Holly's hosts ask her about her favourite female artists from Emmylou Harris to Taylor Swift. Along the way she gives us the inside lowdown on "Music City" – having just attended 2022's CMA Awards – and talks fascinatingly about Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus. The week's new audio interview, with the late great Guy Clark, gives us a chance to discuss that unpigeonholeable singer-songwriter, his complicated friendship with Townes Van Zandt, and his influence on disciples such as Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell. Two clips from John Tobler's 1986 interview with Guy prompt tearful memories of Holly's friendship with the Texan troubadour. After we've said our own sad goodbyes to Melody Maker mainstay Colin Irwin, Low's Mimi Parker and Nazareth frontman Dan McCafferty, Mark and Jasper talk us out with their favourite new additions to the RBP library including interviews with Patti Smith and Little Simz. Many thanks to special guest Holly Gleason; visit her website at hollygleason.com and find Woman Walk the Line at all good bookshops.Pieces discussed: Women in country, Taylor Swift, Holly Gleason in conversation with John Prine, Guy Clark audio, Guy Clark: Randall Knives, Desperados & Homegrown Tomatoes, Colin Irwin articles, Low, Nazareth, Patti Smith, Bobbie Gentry and Little Simz.

Episode 45 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 10 Nov 2022. The show kicked off with ACDC and a track off Let There Be Rock called ‘Overdose'. From there we continued with Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, and White Zombie. We went into the ‘00s and cranked the Nu Metal with Drowning Pool and the title track off the Sinner album, the one that gave the world 'Bodies' and 'Broken Home' off Papa Roach's Infest album. Strangely enough, we went from that into some mellow blues, courtesy of Popa Chubby and ZZ Top with Trouble and Blue Jean Blues respectively. It was the Papa to Popa connection that did it. From the Blues, we checked out Iron Maiden and another track off Power Slave called ‘Back In the Village'. Herman Frank, ex of Accept got a look-in with a track off his latest album Two For a Lie. We stayed in Germany for some Rammstein and a bit later 'Blackout' from Scorpions, another song written about Eskom. A highlight of the show was the back-to-back pairing of Tony Martin and Joe Lynn Turner, two vocalists who have played in the best bands in the world and have both released solo alums in the last 12 months. Joe Lynn Turner has Peter Tägtgren producing and doing the guitar work and it is one hell of a combination. We had some more Nu Metal courtesy of Limp Bizkit and then used Courtney Love's band Hole, with a track called 'Rock Star' to lead us into a quick farewell and RIP to Nazareth's Dan McCafferty who passed away this week. As explained on the show Nazareth are a very special band to those of us growing up in the '70s and '80s and we thanked Dan for writing and performing some awesome classic songs. We took in 'When Your Love is Gone' by Assie legend Jimmy Barnes and then spent nearly nine minutes on the Thin Lizzy classic ‘Still In Love With You'. It came off the Live album called Life and features all the Thin Lizzy guitarists Eric Bell, Scott Gorham, Brian Robertson, Gary Moore, Snowy White, and John Sykes. Texas Hippie Coalition moved the show out of the ballads and Night Ranger and Queensrÿche continued the excellent medicine and took it to the next level. The new Queensrÿche, Digital Noise Alliance' is fantastic, check it out. This show just had too much material and not enough time. We tipped the hat to Judas Priest for their well-deserved and long overdue inclusion into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we listened to another awesome Vivian Campbell solo and heard how powerful Andrew Freeman is on a track called ‘Year of The Gun' and we squeezed in an amazingly emotional track from My Chemical Romance called 'The World is Ugly'. The consensus on the chat was that MCR are correct on this point. Cheers all, see you next week, I hope you enjoy the episode. Artists featured: ACDC, Black Stone Cherry, Def Leppard, White Zombie, Drowning Pool, Papa Roach, Popa Chubby, ZZ Top, Iron Maiden, Herman Frank, Rammstein, Anthrax, Dead City Ruins, Burning Rain, Skid Row, Five Finger Death Punch, Scorpions, Tony Martin, Joe Lynn Turner, Leslie West Tribute, Limp Bizkit, Hole, Nazareth, The Gaslight Anthem, Jimmy Barnes, Thin Lizzy, Texas Hippie Coalition, Night Ranger, Queensrÿche, Halestorm, Judas Priest, Last In Line, Green Day, My Chemical Romance, Johnny Cash, In Flames The Story of Rock and Roll. Sean Penn loaned one of his Oscar awards to the President of Ukraine...and Dan McCafferty the lead singer of Nazareth is dead at 76!
"Dan McCafferty Remembered" Okay, to be fair Dan McCafferty left the legendary Scottish band back in 2013 but worthy replacements aside, he will always be the voice of Nazareth. After 45 years fronting the internationally acclaimed outfit, McCafferty stepped aside due to health reasons. Recharged, revitalized and sounding better than ever, McCafferty roared back with The Last Testament, his third solo album--and first since 1987. In this conversation he chats with Alex about his collaboration with the Czech instrumentalist Karel Marik, why he's never planned anything in his life and why the easiest people to talk to are fishermen.
Sad news has just reached me about the passing of Nazareth legend Dan McCafferty. I wanted to record a quick episode to remember him and play out a short clip of an interview I did with his lifelong friend and bandmate Pete Agnew where he talks about Dan.

Scottish band Nazareth finally found international success with their sixth studio album, Hair of the Dog. This album featured the well known (but often mislabeled) title track as well as an unusual but highly popular cover of the Everly Brothers song “Love Hurts.”Nazareth was originally formed in 1968 from the remaining members of a group called the Shadettes. They took the name Nazareth from the town of Nazareth, Pennsylvania. The classic rock song "The Weight" by The Band names this town in it's first lines, "I pulled into Nazareth, was feelin' about half past dead..." The band members were Darrell Sweet on drums, Pete Agnew on bass, Manny Charlton on guitar and synthesizer, and Dan McCafferty on vocals. They moved to London in 1970 and slowly built success over their first five studio albums and opening on tour for acts like Deep Purple.Although their success was building, Hair of the Dog was simply at a different level that gave the group the appearance of overnight success. The album has a raw feel and attitude. It was the first one produced by Manny Charlton, who would later produce the iconic album "Appetite for Destruction" for Guns N Roses.Nazareth continues to tour today, though Peter Agnew is the remaining original member. Darrel Sweet died in 1999 of a heart attack while on tour. Manny Charlton left the group in the 80's to focus on producing. Front man Dan McCafferty retired in 2013 for health reasons.Folks, this is straight up mid-70's rock. Enjoy! Love HurtsA surprising choice for a 70's rock band, this Everly Brothers cover was quite good, and was Nazareth's biggest hit, entering the top 10 in ten countries. Somehow Nazareth tapped a raw emotion in this song, and Dan McCafferty's choice to sing it an octave higher contributes to that. Perhaps it was a precursor to the hair ballads that were to come in the 80's. Rose in the HeatherThis deeper cut is a lower tempo instrumental that finishes off "Beggars Day" on side two, written by Nils Lofgren, a member of the E. Street Band.Whiskey Drinkin' WomanThis is where this Scottish band takes inspiration from Southern Rock, and pulls it off well. The song tells a story of blues, where a man is in love with an alcoholic and doesn't know what to do. "That whiskey drinkin' woman is makin' a poor man out of me."Hair of the DogAn iconic track, complete with talking guitar and more cowbell! This song is often assumed to be entitled "Son of a B***h," but the record label knew that no song with that title would sell in Sears and other stores. The name chosen was a play on words, as it was originally spelled "Heir of the Dog." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the television series “Gunsmoke”This long running western finished it's television run in March 1975. It began as a radio series in 1952 and the television series began in 1955, making it one of the longest running TV series in history. STAFF PICKS:How Long by AceRob's staff pick has a distinctive bass opening, and is the debut single by Ace. It might seem like a story of infidelity in relationships, but Ace's bass player Terry "Tex" Comer was found to be secretly playing for two other bands. This is a favorite song for Phil Collins. Lead singer Paul Carrack would have a further connection with Genesis when he joined Genesis guitarist Mike Rutherford in the band Mike and the Mechanics.Roll on Down the Highway by Bachman Turner OverdriveBruce's staff pick channels the popularity of truckers and trucking in the mid 70's. Fred Turner and Robbie Bachman wrote the song. Randy Bachman had been contracted by Ford to do music for a commercial, but they didn't take the jingle. The band worked it into a full song.Fire by the Ohio PlayersBrian cranks up the funk with this Billboard number 1 hit. Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner wrote the lyrics about a woman so hit she's starting a fire. Stevie Wonder heard an early demo of the song and predicted it would be a hit. Long Tall Glasses by Leo SayerWayne finishes off the staff picks with a song about a hobo looking for a meal in a fancy restaurant. When he sits down, "then somebody grabbed me, threw me out of my chair, said 'before you can eat, you gotta dance like Fred Astaire.'" INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Constipated Duck by Jeff BeckThe guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck closes us out this week with an interestingly-named instrumental piece from his album Blow by Blow.

ROCK TALK WITH MITCH LAFON presents legendary Nazareth singer, Dan McCafferty. During our conversation, Dan discusses his latest solo album - Last Testament, realizing it was time to leave Nazareth, his health, the Guns N' Roses effect, did the record company force them to record the cover The Everly Brothers' Love Hurts, self-producing albums, his upcoming tour plans, the effect of the Universal Music fire on Nazareth's catalog, and much more. Quotes from the interview - "As a 73 year old guy, you don't get a lot chances at recording another album, but I'd like to make Last Testament 2 or 3." On his new solo album Last Testament, "I really did not want to make a cheapo version of Nazareth. That would have been appalling." On leaving Nazareth, "I said look boys I cannot do this anymore, but there's no reason for there to be no Naz. The boys sat down and everybody was upset. We're all close mates... It was very sad for me and I still miss the guys everyday." On dropping Roger Glover as Nazareth's producer, "He wanted to start formulating, but that's not Naz. Being in Deep Purple, he liked Deep Purple. It should be Deep Purple. You know what I mean... We wanted a change from Roger anyway." "I found my career... a lot of bumbling goes on and I think that's true of a lot of musicians - to be quite honest. Nazareth is an amazing band, in from Scotlant to play a live show Friday, June 7 2013 at The Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, IL. Tickets start at only $29. In this conversation with the lead singer Dan McCafferty you will find out the only country on the planet that Nazareth has never played, his whiskey recommendations and also the backstory on two of the greatest rock songs of all time: Love Hurts and Hair Of The Dog.
Dan McCafferty Talks about new cd and some fun stuff check it out. :) Thanks DAN In the early 1960’s there were many fledgling Scottish bands struggling to create a unique sound of their own. A major factor holding them back was their remoteness from the main hub of the UK music business. London was where you had to be and frankly nobody was interested in what was happening north of Watford let alone in Scotland, Matters were made even worse by Scottish promoters and ballroom managers who insisted that Scottish groups limit their set-list strictly to covers of singles in the UK top thirty. In other words, performers like Agnew, Charlton, singer and front man Dan McCafferty, and drummer Darrell Sweet were excluded by 'the machine in London', and yet trapped into mimicking its often dire output as well. Several things marked these guys out as a bit different: first, they were married and settled before they decided to take the plunge – in the summer of 1971 - quitting good day-jobs and moving away from home to a grotty communal flat in London; second, they grew up and lived in a conservative-attitudes Scottish town, not a bustling fashion-conscious metropolis like Glasgow. Lastly, in bingo millionaire Bill Fehilly, they had what no other struggling Scottish band had at the time - solid financial backing. The band’s extensive gig schedule brought them to the attention of Pegasus Records, who released the bands debut album in late 1971. Featuring a cover of Tim Rose’s ‘Morning Dew’, ‘Nazareth’ caught on in Germany but wasn’t as successful at home. For the following year’s ‘Exercises’ album, Roy Thomas Baker (who would later work with Queen, Alice Cooper and Foreigner among many others) was promoted from engineer to producer. An early version of ‘Woke Up This Morning’ – a song that Nazareth revived for their next album – and the highland fling of ‘1692 (Glencoe Massacre)’ were the highlights of ‘Exercises’, but more than three decades later, the pair agree that it sounds lightweight and directionless. Britain in 1973 most definitely was the year of Nazareth, a year when Melody Maker readers voted them Brightest Hope. But if you look at the UK chart placing of follow-up albums to Razamanaz – which reached number 11 – from 1974 what looks like a gradual decline here is more than offset by a series of breakthroughs on the international scene. Whereas Loud'N'Proud reached number 10, Rampant charted with sales nowhere near as strong, and album six Hair Of The Dog failed to chart in Britain but notched up massive sales world-wide. Full history of Nazareth can be found on the official website website at www.nazarethdirect.co.uk
