"Art is a language without words." —Kate Bryan, author of How to Art: Bringing a Fancy Subject Down to Earth Why art? Why bring it into our lives? Why spend our hard-earned money on it? We often hear about the skyrocketing headline-making prices of paintings being sold at auction, but what's the point of purchasing something if the entire reason is to accrue value to sell later? The primary objective, Bryan shares, in writing this book, is to remove the assumed 'closed doors' or air of snobbery about art that she admits the art world itself has constructed. But, and she makes a strong argument, art, seeing it, appreciating it, making it, is part of being human. And to cordon it off, to claim that it is only a pastime for those with oodles of money or interest to acquire art of the upper echelons is preposterous. You may be wondering, Why is Shannon talking about this subject? What does art have to do with living simply luxuriously? With living a life of true contentment? It is precisely because true contentment is grounded in presence, seeing, clearing, and appreciating the everyday that the choice to bring art into our homes helps us savor each and every moment even more. When we bring works of art into our homes, we bring in a moment in the artist's life as they saw it. Their capturing of this ordinary moment in time, however they depict it, is a reminder that there is "beauty and marvels in the everyday". Even if we cannot or do not want to even try to be a literal artist, by gazing at their art, having it be present in our daily lives, we are continually reminded to see the gift in each day - to consciously look for it, take note of it without taking it for granted, and to savor it. Today, I would like to encourage you to consider, if you haven't already, acquiring an art collection to display in your home. Of course, how and where you display it, most likely throughout your home, will be up to you. William Hope Hodgson's The Night Land (1912) is a staggering piece of early weird fiction — an immense, apocalyptic vision set millions of years in the future, after the sun has died. Humanity survives in the Last Redoubt, a titanic metal pyramid lit by internal power, surrounded by eternal darkness and monstrous forces that hunger for the light within. The protagonist, a telepathic man of that far-future world, senses the spirit of his long-dead love calling from another human fortress — the Lesser Redoubt — now besieged in the black wilderness. Driven by love and duty, he ventures into the Night Land: a desolate, monster-haunted plain where the Earth's surface is stalked by “Watchers,” “Silent Ones,” and colossal horrors that defy comprehension. It's equal parts cosmic horror, doomed romance, and proto-science-fantasy. Hodgson's prose is archaic, deliberately medieval in tone, which makes the book feel like an illuminated manuscript describing a dream of the end of time. Modern readers often find it dense, but it rewards endurance — this is an early ancestor of Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and dark science fiction from Dune to Dark Souls. A team of scientists is trying to jumpstart a global conservation movement, on par with efforts to save the rainforests or protect the oceans. But it might be even more ambitious because the target of their quest is invisible, everywhere, and mostly something we try to hand-sanitize away: microbes.So how do you conserve something that is everywhere and in everything? In this short podcast episode, Bryan tells the story of the technology that tried to beat the compressor... and still may someday. We associate cooling with refrigerant... and all the things that come with it, including compressor noise, oil, recovery machines and tanks, leaks, superheat, and regulations. However, there is a means of providing cooling with two pieces of metal and several semiconductors; current runs through it, and one side becomes cold, and the other side becomes hot. This technology is called thermoelectric cooling, associated with the Peltier effect. In 1834, French watchmaker and amateur physicist Jean Charles Athanase Peltier was experimenting with electricity and dissimilar metals. When he joined two wires of different materials and ran current through the junction, one got colder, and the other one got hotter. This phenomenon was named the Peltier effect, and it describes how passing electrical current through two dissimilar conductors causes heat to move from one side to the other, like a tiny reversible heat pump. However, it didn't have any practical use at the time. Semiconductors arrived in the mid-1900s, and engineers could make thermoelectric devices strong enough to move meaningful amounts of heat. In the 1960s, NASA even began using the technology in spacecraft for precision temperature control, which was hardy and allowed them to stabilize sensors and electronics in space. We began using them on Earth in some specialized applications, including portable coolers, wine chillers, and CPU coolers in computers. However, this technology didn't replace vapor-compression refrigeration due to efficiency constraints and the need to reject heat. Thermoelectric modules are only 5-10% as efficient as vapor-compression systems, and they need heat sinks or fans to give the heat somewhere to go. We've still been pursuing a comfort cooling use of the Peltier effect, and we've gotten closer, but most applications still have the efficiency block. When efficiency isn't a problem, we encounter difficulties with moisture and latent heat removal. Nevertheless, thermoelectric cooling is still making a difference for sensors and in localized cooling applications.   Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Scientists have been searching for dark matter for decades. They haven’t found it – every experiment they’ve devised has come up empty. But they haven’t given up. Among other ideas, they’re thinking about ways to use moons, planets, and stars as detectors. Dark matter appears to make up about 85 percent of all the matter in the universe. We know it’s there because its gravity pulls on the visible stars and galaxies around it. Dark matter may consist of a type of particle that almost never interacts with normal matter. But it should interact just enough to reveal its nature. Experiments here on Earth haven’t seen any such interactions. So some scientists recommend using astronomical objects instead of lab experiments. Blobs of dark matter might enfold a binary star system. The dark matter’s gravity could pull the two stars away from each other. And dark matter might clump together to make a special kind of star. Both of those might be detectable with current telescopes. Smaller blobs might slam into an icy moon, creating a special kind of crater. Such craters could be visible on Ganymede, the largest moon of Jupiter. Two missions on their way to Jupiter might be able to see them. And dark matter might fall into the center of a planet and hang around. If enough builds up, it could heat the planet’s interior. So by studying many planets in other star systems, we might see some that are unusually warm – heated up by encounters with dark matter. Script by Damond Benningfield

Read OnlineJesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to the childlike.” Luke 10:23–24 We rejoice over many things in life. We might rejoice if we win a game, do well on a test, complete some task at home or work, or attend a celebration or party. Though rejoicing is an emotion tied to our human nature, true joy is spiritual in nature, a gift that overflows into human emotion.Try to imagine Jesus rejoicing in the Holy Spirit. Jesus' joy was perfect. As God, His unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit was beyond anything we can imagine. Therefore, when He experienced the perfection of spiritual joy, that joy overflowed into His perfect human nature, resulting in an emotional response that was more powerful than any of us will experience until the day we stand with our resurrected bodies before the Beatific Vision in the New Heavens and new Earth.When Jesus prayed, “I give you praise, Father…,” He was not only engaging in an intellectual exercise. He did not just make a public statement so that it would be written in Scripture or because it was the right thing to do. Rather, Jesus spoke His praises to the Father because His lived human experience, in that moment, was a human rejoicing with divine power. Jesus' all-consuming joy was perfectly ordered, deeply fulfilling, an appropriate response to His Father and the Holy Spirit, and contagious to those around Him. True spiritual joy is never contained; it overflows and touches the lives of others.By experiencing such joy in His human nature, Jesus further elevated human nature itself, making it possible for us to rejoice in the Holy Spirit with Him within our human souls, provided we humble ourselves before Him. Jesus praised the Father for revealing Himself to the childlike, those who are humble of heart. Seeing that was the cause of His joy. To be childlike in the eyes of God means to trust Him completely, to approach Him with openness and wonder, and to depend on Him for all things. It is the opposite of relying on our own understanding and wisdom, which often leads to pride and distance from God.True humility is nothing other than honesty with oneself before God. Humility makes us childlike because it opens our eyes to the truth that we are little spiritual children in need of God's fatherhood. If we pretend to be “wise and learned” before God, we only reveal our foolishness, the absence of divine wisdom. Reflect today on the perfection of spiritual joy in Jesus' divinity and its emotional effect upon His humanity. No one has ever rejoiced with the same joy as the Son of God. However, we are all called to live within that spiritual joy. This joy strengthens us in trials, deepens our love for others, and helps us live our faith with greater conviction and authenticity. Humble yourself before God today, begging for greater humility so that you will become a greater partaker of Jesus' joy, the joy He came to bestow upon the world. My humble Lord, You rejoiced as You saw Your Father reveal hidden and divine mysteries to those who were humble of heart and childlike. Please bestow Your grace upon me so that I will also grow in divine wisdom, remaining humble and childlike, to fill Your human soul with the deepest joy. I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day two thousand seven hundred forty-three of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The title of today's Wisdom-Trek is: The King, The Shepherd, and The Warning – A Trek Through Psalm 95:1-11 Today, we are lacing up our boots to climb a new peak in the Psalter: Psalm Ninety-five. We will cover the entire psalm, verses one through eleven, in the New Living Translation. In our previous trek through Psalm Ninety-four, we stood in the courtroom of the cosmos. We saw God as the Judge of the Earth and the God of Vengeance, dismantling the "throne of destruction" and promising to wipe out the wicked who oppress the innocent. It was a psalm of justice, a cry for the legal intervention of Heaven. Psalm Ninety-five shifts the scene dramatically. We move from the courtroom to the Throne Room, and then to the Wilderness. This psalm serves as the grand entrance hymn to the collection of Royal Psalms that celebrate Yahweh's Kingship. It is a psalm of invitation—an invitation to shout, to bow, and, crucially, to listen. It is structured in two distinct movements: a jubilant call to worship the Supreme King, and a somber, prophetic warning from that same King. It teaches us that true worship is not just about loud songs; it is about a soft heart. So, let us heed the call and approach the Rock of our Salvation. The first segment is: The Call to Cosmic Worship: The King Above All Gods Psalm Ninety-five: verses one through five Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.  Let us come to him with thanksgiving. Let us sing psalms of praise to him.  For the Lord is a great God, a great King above all gods.  He holds in his hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains.  The sea belongs to him, for he made it. His hands formed the dry land. The psalmist begins with an imperative, a command to the congregation that bursts with energy: "Come, let us sing to the Lord! Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation." We saw in Psalm Ninety-four that God is our "fortress" and "mighty rock" of refuge against the wicked. Now, in response to that protection, the only appropriate reaction is volume. The phrase "shout joyfully" (rûa‘) is the same word used for a war cry or the blast of a trumpet hailing a monarch. We are not mumbling prayers in a corner; we are hailing the Victor. We approach His presence with "thanksgiving" (tôdâ), bringing an offering of gratitude before we even ask for a thing. Things are heating up for a planet that orbits the brightest star of Aries. The star is expanding to become a giant, so it’s pumping more energy into space. That will make temperatures extremely uncomfortable on the planet. Hamal is at the end of its life. It’s converted the hydrogen in its core to helium. Now, it’s getting ready to fuse the helium to make other elements. That’s made the core hotter. And that’s caused the star’s outer layers to puff up – to more than a dozen times the diameter of the Sun. So Hamal is about 75 times brighter than the Sun. Hamal has one known possible planet. It’s heavier than Jupiter, the giant of our own solar system. On average, the planet is about as far from Hamal as Earth is from the Sun – much closer in than Jupiter is. So every square foot of the planet’s surface receives dozens of times more energy than the same area on Jupiter does. If the planet is a ball of gas like Jupiter, then the extra heat is causing its atmosphere to puff up – and causing a lot of it to stream away into space. Over the next few million years, the planet will get even hotter, because Hamal will get even bigger. The extra energy may erode the planet’s atmosphere completely. On the other hand, the planet may spiral into the star. Either way, things are going to get much hotter for Hamal’s only known planet.
