Nick Jones enlisted in the Marine Corps at 18 out of Olathe, Kansas. Mortarman, then scout sniper platoon, then selection and 2nd Marine Raider Battalion, where he came up through element member to element leader. Twelve years, five deployments. On March 8, 2020, his team went into the Qarachogh Mountains in northern Iraq to clear a cave complex and lost their team leader and their team chief. He was shot going back for them and kept fighting until he was pulled off the mountain. Six surgeries and eighteen months later he medically retired as a staff sergeant with a Navy Cross and a Purple Heart. He now runs the Talons Reach Foundation. In 2019 he built a mountain warfare training package for his team in Montana. It got denied. The reason given was that they wouldn't be fighting in the mountains. Ten months later they were. He proposed on top of Lone Peak and told his wife they'd build a family in Montana in ten years. They got there in one. Five years later she broke down on the drive back from Jackson and told him she had no life there. That conversation moved everybody to Wyoming. Hamilton, a Methodist minister who runs his state's largest mega-church, debunks charges from the right that he's “too woke for Kansas,” and explains why GOP incumbent Roger Marshall resembles the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion from “The Wizard of Oz” all rolled into one. Powell, a self-styled “pissed-off baseball mom,” describes the fury of Omaha voters at Trump's mockery of "affordability" and her plan to win one of only a handful of congressional districts that voted for Kamala Harris and a Republican House member in 2024.

Send us Fan MailOn September 11, 1874, the John German family was journeying westward toward Colorado along the Smoky Hill River route in Kansas when they were violently ambushed by a band of 17 Cheyenne Dog Soldiers led by Medicine Water. In the surprise attack, John German, his wife Lydia, and three of their children—Rebecca Jane, Stephen, and Joanna—were killed and mutilated, while their wagon was set ablaze. Four surviving daughters—Catherine (17), Sophia (12), Julia (7), and Adelaide (5)—were taken captive by the raiding party and forced south into the Texas Panhandle, where the sisters were eventually separated among different Cheyenne bands.Following word of the massacre, General Nelson A. Miles launched a pursuit mission featuring scouts such as Bat Masterson to locate and rescue the abducted girls. On November 8, Lieutenant Frank Baldwin executed an aggressive surprise charge on Chief Gray Beard's winter camp near McClellan Creek, loading infantry into supply wagons to overrun the village. While the warriors fled, soldiers securing the abandoned site discovered young Julia and Adelaide hidden beneath a pile of buffalo robes. Today I had the good fortune to interview David Booth.  Let me tell you a little bit about him. His modest upbringing in Kansas from selling newspapers at 8 years old to selling shoes as a teenager, to working on the team that launched the first index fund; to pioneering what would come to be known as factor investing, David Booth didn't just witness the financial revolution, he helped lead it.  For five decades, he's bridged the worlds of academic theory and practical investing, collaborating with Nobel laureates to build Dimensional fund advisors into a $1 trillion global firm that has democratized evidence-based investing for millions. Booth earned degrees in economics and business from the University of Kansas, followed by an MBA from the University of Chicago.  His Chicago education proved instrumental to his success, leading to a transformative gift to the business school in 2008.  The University of Chicago Booth School of Business now bears his anime, and the contributions continue to support faculty and their field-defining research. Through his visionary application of financial theory to real world investing, Booth has established himself as one of the most influential figures in investing - an outsider who challenged Wall Street's conventional wisdom and won.

College football is finally back!

Colin Halliburton is the lead singer and principal songwriter for the Kansas-based band The Roseline. His poetic storytelling has been in my life for about five years now when I got turned on to The Rosline's 2021 release Constancy. The bar was set high with that record, and I think they cleared it with their brand new record 86 Gumption.  Y'all, Colin is a delight.
