Es un factor clave para el éxito personal y profesional, ya que nos ayuda a resolver conflictos, trabajar en equipo y liderar con eficacia. Pero la inteligencia emocional no es algo con lo que nacemos, sino una habilidad que se puede desarrollar y mejorar con la práctica y el aprendizaje. Travis Bradberry y Jean Greaves, autores del libro Inteligencia emocional 2.0, proponen estrategias para potenciar cuatro aspectos de la inteligencia emocional: el autoconocimiento, la autogestión, la conciencia social y la gestión de las relaciones. El autoconocimiento es la base de la inteligencia emocional. Se trata de ser conscientes de nuestras propias emociones, de cómo nos afectan y de cómo influyen en nuestro comportamiento. El salmista dice: «Oh Dios, examíname, reconoce mi corazón; ponme a prueba, reconoce mis pensamientos; mira si voy por el camino del mal, y guíame por el camino eterno» (Salmo 139: 23-24). El apóstol Pablo afirma: «Yo sé que, en mí, es decir, en mi naturaleza débil, no reside el bien; pues, aunque tengo el deseo de hacer lo bueno, no soy capaz de hacerlo» (Romanos 7: 18). La autogestión es la capacidad de regular nuestras emociones y expresarlas de forma adecuada. Nos permite controlar los impulsos negativos, como la ira o la ansiedad, y fomentar los positivos, como la gratitud o el entusiasmo. Nos ayuda a adaptarnos a los cambios, tomar decisiones acertadas y alcanzar nuestras metas. La autogestión es un fruto del Espíritu Santo, que nos capacita para vivir una vida santa y agradable a Dios. El apóstol Pablo dice: «En cambio, lo que el Espíritu produce es amor, alegría, paz, paciencia, amabilidad, bondad, fidelidad, humildad y dominio propio. We hope the thoughts and ideas we share serve you well as you consider your friendships and whether they satisfy you along with satisfying your friends.   Let's start by considering the role of self-awareness in making and keeping friends.   Let me kick things off by asking,   "Why is it important for friends to be self-aware?"   Self-awareness is a key component of emotional intelligence, and emotional intelligence is essential for building and maintaining healthy relationships. When friends are self-aware, they are better able to understand their own feelings and behaviors, which can help them communicate more effectively with each other and can prevent misunderstandings and conflicts. Self-awareness also enables friends to be more empathetic and understanding towards each other, which is vital for developing strong and long-lasting friendships. Overall, friends who are self-aware are better equipped to navigate the complexities of human relationships and are more likely to be supportive and caring towards one another.   What happens when friends are not self-aware?   When friends are not self-aware, it can lead to a number of issues in their relationship. For example, they may have difficulty understanding their own emotions and behaviors, making it harder for them to communicate effectively with each other. They may also struggle to see things from each other's perspective, leading to misunderstandings and conflicts. The Law of Intuition (Part 2) Recap of Part 1: The two things that make up leadership intuition:Natural Ability  Learned Skill Question: What are some areas that people in leadership tend to not be intuitive?  Answer: Three common areas: Realizing that the journey is a lot longer than you think it will be. Seeing things as other people’s fault - not your own. Intentionally viewing EVERYTHING through the leadership lens. People tend to miss the Law of Intuition when it comes to the simple stuff that should not be missed, but most often is. I am talking about team member morale, the momentum of their companies, and especially relational dynamics. There are so many intangibles that leaders miss on a daily basis. The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, John Maxwell  Leaders are Readers:of their situation of trends of their resources of people of themselves    Leaders are Readers: Of their situation We all wear a lot of different hats (roles in life). Read each situation you are in.  Leaders are always looking at the environment.  You can’t change your circumstances but can change your response to the circumstances.  Reflection Question: Are you reading your situations as a leader would?  How does someone look at their situation and have confidence that they are seeing it clearly? What do they need in order to see it clearly through a leadership lens?  Leaders sens attitudes and chemistry  Leaders are looking for the intangibles  Leaders know a situation before it happens and before all the facts   Leaders are Readers: Of trends Most managers are really concerned about being efficient and effective. The bottom line and getting things done.  Leaders take the broader view. They look years and decades ahead.  Leaders in some ways buck the trends. They are thinking further out then the here and now.  Leaders step back to see what’s happening in the moment and see how it is going to affect the organization in the future.  You need to sense when trouble is coming and when opportunity is coming.  Leaders are steps ahead of their people.  You will go through many different trends. Your job as a leader is to keep people grounded knowing you are taking a further view.  Be the constant caring for your people and leading them through the change.  The mission stays the same but the method will change.    Leaders are Readers: Of their resources The difference between leaders and everybody else is the way that they see what is in front of them, the things that are at hand, their resources.  Leaders think in terms of next level leadership - “This is what I have and this is what I have to do to get the most out of it.” Leaders think challenges & problems = opportunity. They look at their resources and ask, “Who are the people I can give these resources to get the job done?” You have to see everything with a leadership bias.  Leaders build leaders and build teams and leverage their resources.  Reflection Questions: Are you using the resources you have properly?    Leaders are Readers: Of people People are it! Everything else can come and go, but people are it.  The only reason to ever burn a bridge is when someone lacks character.  Are you able to read people in the situation you are in right now? Are you intuitive of the relationships of your boss, your peers, those that report to you.  Leaders know the hopes, dreams, fears, and concerns of their people behind the scenes.  If you want to lead someone you need to learn who he is and how to read him better. And you can’t read someone unless you are in relationship with them.  What role does emotional intelligence play in reading people.  Emotional Intelligence 2.0, Jean Greaves and Travis Bradberry (Mo’s Top 50 reading list)Are you self aware? Are you socially aware?  Reading people is the most important skill in the intuition department.  Leaders must hone this skill.  If you aren’t giving people a reason to follow you then you’re not leading at all.    Leaders are Readers: Of themselves This is why you need an Inner Circle You have to have the ability to read yourself.  “No one can produce great things who is not thoroughly sincere in dealing with himself.” James Russel Reflection Question: Are you reading yourself on a daily basis? Are you making changes?  Leaders need to know their strengths and know their weaknesses.  Recommendation: Take the Strengthsfinder 2.o assessment    Mo’s Final Thoughts: When leaders become others focused and optimistic, that’s when organizations thrive. The CEO tells the VP Marketing candidate he’d hire her if she lost 20 pounds. She’s “too fat to represent our company.”The VP Operations tells her team if they were competent they would’ve achieved their quarterly goals.The CFO sends the Controller an angry email saying his budget “sucks and is pathetic.”The VP Product Development says “deal with it” when the favorite lead engineer and keeper of the culture quits.What do all these leaders have in common?They aren’t emotionally intelligent. They are sending “nasty-grams” to their teams and causing emotional disengagement and shutdown in others. They have low EQ.And EQ = money, according to Drs. Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves (see resources below).“The link between EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ equals $1,300 to an annual salary. If that’s not enough, EQ accounts for 58% of performance in all types of jobs”.All. Wow.So let’s figure this out in a straightforward way. First, i’ll summarize emotional intelligence and you’ll see a handy infographic in the show notes: Here’s how to start becoming more emotionally intelligent:1. Figure out what you’re feeling. It’s essential to be in tune with your emotions—this is Self-Awareness. Now based on what you are feeling, is it the appropriate time to send that angry email? Right now it’s key to remember that communication is redundant: humans cannot *not* communicate—our facial expressions, body posture, vocal tone/pace/pitch betray us. Even in email or texts our vocal tone/pace/pitch can be detected.You know what it feels like to receive an email when someone is spewing anger or venting frustration. You also know what it feels like when someone handles a challenging situation with compassion, a spirit of collaboration, and overall respect and kindness. People can tell. Your vocal tone does indeed come through in written communication.2. Take a breather. Holding off on sending a nasty-gram until you cool down is Self-Management. We need to shift out of Critter State [fight/flight/freeze or Amygdala Hijack] into Smart State [clear thinking, behavioral choice, innovation, collaboration, creativity] in order to practice Self-Management. Now is a great time to unpack the visual, auditory and kinesthetic cues that triggered you. And if you’re in Critter State one of the easiest ways to shift out of it and into Smart State is to practice 7-7-7 breathing. Inhale for a count of 7, hold for count of 7, exhale for count of 7. Do 7 times. Ahhhhh. Now you have choice to respond vs. react compulsively. Excellent!3. Consider the recipient. While you are practicing #1 or #2 above, consider what the recipient might feel upon receiving your communication. This is Social Awareness. They are a different person from you, so they’ll likely make different meaning—they’ll interpret your communication–based on their Map of the World and not yours. Many components factor into a person’s map of the world, such as education, where they grew up, socio-economics, religion, childhood experiences, adult experience—which is why we misunderstand one another so often: we all have different maps.This consideration is Social Awareness.4. Focus on the outcome. What is the outcome you’d actually like to achieve? How would you like to make someone feel in order to empower them and move the ball forward? It’s time to craft a message that will get the result you want and make the person feel powerful, effective, enrolled, engaged, whatever positive emotion you want. This is Relationship Management.Let’s revisit the above real-world scenarios. When I was asked to come in and coach these leaders to become more Emotionally Intelligent they had team members ready to quit, some were totally checked out and no longer cared, some were downright hostile due to prolonged mistreatment. So I had my work cut out for me.Once the leaders were in touch with their feelings and had boosted their Self-Management and Self-Awareness, we then worked on Social Awareness and Relationship Management. This transformation took 4-6 months (based on the leader) to become an automatic response.When I asked each of them how they would’ve navigated the scenarios above were they able to turn back time, here’s how the communications were edited (yes, after the fact, but better than repeating the mistake!).The CEO tells the VP Marketing candidate she has great skills and he’d like to explore how she can best represent the company.The VP Operations asks her team what they need to achieve their goals next time. Did she set the bar too high? Were they all too ambitious? Do they need more/different resources? Were there cross-functional dependencies that we all missed considering?The CFO meets with the Controller and works through expectations for the budget, filling in any gaps so what defines “success” is super clear. The Controller feels safe to ask questions and push back on things they disagree with.The VP Product Development sits down with the team and lets them express their grief without judging them. Then she asks what the team needs to heal and move forward, noting that they’ll tackle this together, as a team, all for one, and one for all.How emotionally intelligent are you? Si bien nadie desmiente esta teoría, hoy sabemos que la suma de tales ingredientes ya no es suficiente, de lo contrario ¿cómo explicar que cada día más profesionales que reúnen todas estas características no consiguen los objetivos que se plantean? El elemento que hace la diferencia -y que es difícil identificar en un currículum- es la Inteligencia Emocional. Ese es el resultado de enriquecer tu inteligencia emocional, un manejo completo de tus emociones y de las de otros. La inteligencia emocional comprende 4 habilidades divididas en 2 grupos: competencias personales y competencias sociales. Un manejo adecuado de ellas hará que eleves sustancialmente tu desempeño personal y profesional, así como tus oportunidades de alcanzar más objetivos.   Estas son las 4 habilidades que comprende la inteligencia emocional y las enseñanzas que me destaco del libro  1.- La autoconciencia y cómo utilizarla en tu beneficioLa autoconciencia es la habilidad de distinguir, sentir y entender tus emociones en cualquier momento. Es conocer tu esencia y entender porqué haces las cosas que haces. Para tener un nivel alto de auto conciencia tienes que resistir emociones que te hacen sentir incómodo. La única manera de entender tus emociones es analizando muy bien de dónde vienen y por qué aparecen. Las emociones siempre tienen un origen y un propósito. On today’s show, we will discuss ­­­How to Stop Crying and Screaming so you can Control the ripple effect of your emotions on others Before we get started, I’d like to say hello to those of you who are listening in the UK, Ireland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Mozambique, India and even China! MAIN TOPIC Tami:  ( STORY OF COFFEE LADY)   Do you have a desire to be a senior leader within your organization?  If so, you do need to learn to manage your emotions. Have you seen overly angry women at work or at school?   There are times and places where a proper display of anger may be necessary, but if this kind of anger is your default reaction to anything that slightly displeases you, you need to figure out what you need to do to change your reaction.  This kind of anger WILL get in your way on your road to success, and it is unacceptable, period. If you remain that kind of angry in the everyday interactions you have with people around you, you will find that you get stuck exactly where you are, which will probably only make you angrier. What about the desire to cry?  If you are someone who is very emotional, and it’s not anger you are over-displaying, but instead you cry all the time, is it possible you can learn to control this?    Yes - you can control your urge to cry!  Crying is not a bad thing, when it is done for the right reasons or in the right place.  Still, crying does have a very big impact on all the people around you, and it can be seen as manipulative, weak, or make you seem like you are not a person who is “in control.”   This is the reason you should learn to recognize how and when you cry, and then decide if it is truly necessary each time.  You can make the decision to improve this emotional response and you will feel more powerful if you do learn to control it more often. Let’s talk about Emotional Intelligence.  According to PsychCentral.Com, “Emotional intelligence or EQ, is more important than a person’s intelligence or IQ, in achieving success in their lives and careers.” Is it worth the effort to change our EQ?  According to the book, Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves, here are some reasons you should try to improve your  There are two major sides of EQ, one is how well we know and manage ourselves and our own emotions, the other is how well we recognize emotions in others and manage our interactions with them. In a HBR article, Daniel Goleman describes 12 competencies within 4 domains that make up Emotional Intelligence. [REFERENCE PHOTO - Click this link] In the book Emotional Intelligence 2.0, they describe a simpler, but very similar version of this. [REFERENCE PHOTO - Click this link] Take a close look at each one of these and consider how you might rate on each of these items.  If you buy the book, Emotional Intelligence 2.0, it does come with a code that will allow you to take a free EQ assessment test, which could give you clarity for what you need to work on first. The examples of anger and crying at the beginning, fit squarely into the “Self-Awareness” and “Self-Management” domains.  These domains are heavily in your control. According to Dr. W. Gerrod Parrott, a Professor of Psychology at Georgetown University, all emotions come form the basis of six general categories: Love, Joy, Surprise, Anger, Sadness, Fear.  He has broken these emotions into hundreds of related secondary and tertiary emotions. [REFERENCE PHOTO - Click this link] What are some concrete steps we can take to start improving our Emotional Intelligence right away?  Consider taking an EQ assessment exam, there are free versions available at various locations on the internet  Take a good hard look at yourself and what you want to improve in how you react emotionally, or in how you deal with others on a daily basis.  Make a small list of the most immediate changes you want to make  Think of times when you lost your temper or when you made the decision to cry.  How did this affect the others around you? Did you regret it? Did you wish you could rewind time and do something else instead?  After about an hour, how did you feel about the situation? When you think of the times that drudge up the most regret, those may be the actions you want to work on first.  Once you have identified the emotion or competency you want to work on first, develop some strategies that you will employ for trying to correct the behavior.   The Book Emotional Intelligence 2.0 includes 15 or more strategies for each EQ domain.  Given our examples today, of losing your temper or crying, you might try some of these.Adalida:  Time Machine:   In this segment each week we will give a few points about women that have accomplished a lot!
