Welcoming a new baby into the family transforms everyone's lives—not just the parents. But what's your role as a grandparent, aunt, uncle, or sibling when that precious bundle arrives? Postpartum doula Foster Wilson guides us through this delicate family transition with wisdom that bridges generations.Foster reveals that the most valuable contribution family members can make isn't what most expect. "Being of service in these early times helps build the bond with your child as they are transforming from woman to mother," she explains. "The bonding with your grandchild will certainly come, but those early weeks it's so important for mom to have her bonding with her child."This conversation tackles the practical realities of modern family support systems. With families often separated by distance and grandparents working longer, Foster offers strategies for supporting new parents both in-person and from afar. She emphasizes understanding your personal strengths—whether cooking nutrient-dense meals, providing emotional support, or handling household tasks—and using them to genuinely serve the new family.Foster encourages a mindset shift: while you may have experience with childbirth and parenting, your child is experiencing this for the first time. Being curious about their approach rather than imposing your own views creates space for their parenting journey. As she beautifully puts it, we need to create "circles of care" where the baby is at the center, the parents surround the baby, and extended family supports them all.Whether you're preparing to welcome a grandchild or supporting a sibling through new parenthood, this episode offers invaluable guidance for nurturing not just the new baby, but the transforming family as a whole. Subscribe, like and share to help other families discover this wisdom!Bio Foster Wilson is a poet, author, and postpartum doula whose work bridges creativity, care, and connection. Her debut poetry collection, Afternoon Abundance: Poetry for Wild Souls, explores identity, spirituality, and the transformative journey of motherhood. With an award-winning career in independent film and a BFA from NYU Tisch School of the Arts, Foster brings a cinematic eye and a soulful perspective to everything she creates. As a doula, she supports birthing people through life's most profound transitions, blending empathy with advocacy. So much of a new mother's attention is focused on her newborn in the postpartum stage. Understandably so, a new mom should also be taken care of, and her health made a priority so she has the energy and clarity for her new role in motherhood. During pregnancy, your body is devoted to your baby, but taking the time to be mindful of your nutrition once the baby arrives isn't self-indulgent, it's necessary. After pregnancy, you are more susceptible to anemia, osteopenia, fatigue, and depression. Consuming a nutrient-dense diet will enrich your milk with the nutrients necessary to help your baby's brain and body grow and develop. In this episode, I cover all the things new mothers need to do (and not do) after the baby is born. From who to have around in your home to what foods and supplements to take. I hope this helps you in some way on your postpartum journey. Share this episode with other mamas who need postpartum support. New mothers with mental health needs are apparently being “failed” by the State. Maternity care services typically end six weeks after having a baby and it's assumed that health concerns are all looked after by then. But some mental health worries can actually increase several months after labour according to a new study. Photo by Pixabay
Many new mothers face increased anxiety in the first two years of their child's life and women who need to most help are least likely to seek it. That's according to a new study from University College Cork, and Dr Karen Matvienko-Sikar, author of the study and Senior Lecturer in Public Health at UCC spoke to Newstalk Breakfast.

Hello beautiful ones! I've somehow taken a bit of an unexpected hiatus from the podcast lately, but I'm really, really delighted to share a new episode with you today. It's a super fun and beautiful conversation between three friends – myself, Mara Glatzel and Becca Piastrelli. In this episode, we're turning the tables and Mara and Becca are interviewing ME about the launch of my upcoming book, Mothershift: Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage. If you aren't familiar with Mara and Becca, let me tell you a little bit about them first! Mara Glatzel is a coach, podcast host and author of the book Needy: How to advocate for your needs and claim your sovereignty and Becca Piastrelli is a community gatherer and women's circle facilitator, podcast host and author of the book Root and Ritual: Timeless ways to connect with land, lineage, community and the self. These two are friends with each other and they've been my friends for quite a number of years now, and they have been *tireless* champions for Mothershift and my work. Becca is also an alumni of my MotherSHIFT program. They both played a key role in my ability to get a book deal for Mothershift, and for that I will be endlessly grateful. In this episode, Mara and Becca and I talk about: > Why I wrote Mothershift and why this book is so important right now. You'll hear me talk about how I feel like I'm this book's doula, and how easy it's been to share the messages that it holds. > Why "the mothers aren't all right," including my perspective on the US Surgeon General's advisory on the mental health of parents. We talk about the modern conditions that are particularly challenging for mothers as well as parts of the rite of passage into motherhood that have been difficult – but also filled with potential – since time immemorial. > Our relationship with social media, about how it has become a surrogate for the witnessing we need as we step into motherhood, and whether or not we're actually ever seeing the *real* truth about anyone's experience of mothering. > Is postpartum forever? We speculate how many years it takes to feel fully embodied in your experience of motherhood. > The role of ritual in supporting and uplifting our matrescence experiences. I do hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we loved recording it, and that it gives you a special sneak peek into the writing of Mothershift.
What if the real celebration of postpartum isn't about “bouncing back” but about honoring the powerful changes your body has embraced? Too often, society's expectations push new mothers to fixate on returning to pre-pregnancy shapes, overlooking the strength, resilience, and beauty gained through the journey of childbirth. This is what I dive into in this episode of Embrace Your Real. I will also discuss some practical ways to embrace your current self—from choosing clothes that bring comfort and confidence to recognizing milestones like renewed energy and strength. Let's celebrate each stage of postpartum, creating a space for shared experiences and unity in honoring our unique transformations! I also discuss: (02:51) Embracing Postpartum Body Transformation (07:15) Embracing Movement Postpartum (11:04) Navigating Postpartum Body Confidence (13:32) Embracing Body Confidence Through Dressing (20:32) - Embracing Postpartum Strength and Unity and more! The College of Midwives wants new mums given toast. The Minister Shane Reti has asked for a re-think of not offering toast at Wellington Hospital to those who've just given birth. Health NZ had been advised it was nutritionally sub-optimal. College of Midwives chief executive, Alison Eddy, says toast is long-standing offering at such a time. "There's lot of reasons for that - women often don't feel like a full meal, just like marathon runners don't feel like sitting down to a nutritious meal." Join me with guest Laura Guckian, life coach, host of 'Momfessions' and creator of Mind Mommy Coaching as we talk about postpartum anxiety, which, for her, was so significant she decided to check herself into a psychiatric hospital. How did the anxiety show up for her? What does a hospital level of mental health support look like? We talk about whether the problem for new mothers is the lack of support or the skewed perception of early motherhood that pervades social media. In this episode, Dr. Danielle discusses the importance of supporting postpartum mothers and provides tips on how to navigate the postpartum period. She emphasizes the need for moms to prioritize their health and seek support from healthcare professionals. Dr. Danielle also highlights the common symptoms experienced during postpartum and suggests ways to address them. She covers topics such as hormonal health, digestive health, mental health, and physical activity. Additionally, she recommends specific dietary recommendations, supplements, and lifestyle changes to support postpartum recovery. Takeaways Postpartum mothers often get less attention and support compared to pregnant women, so it's important for them to prioritize their health and seek support from healthcare professionals. Common symptoms during the postpartum period, such as fatigue, constipation, depression, hair loss, and anxiety, can be addressed and should not be considered normal. Testing sex hormones, thyroid function, and blood sugar levels can provide valuable insights into postpartum health and help identify any imbalances or deficiencies. Dietary recommendations for postpartum mothers include consuming foods high in healthy fats, lean proteins, complex carbs, and leafy greens. Supplements such as omega-3 fatty acids, evening primrose oil, magnesium glycinate, B vitamins, and 5-HTP can support hormonal balance and mental health. *NOTE: 5-HTP should *not* be taken with an SSRI as this can lead to Serotonin Syndrome. Supporting digestive health through fiber-rich foods, probiotics, and anti-inflammatory foods is important for postpartum recovery. Prioritizing mental health through social support, therapy, and proper nutrition can help prevent or manage postpartum depression and anxiety. Returning to physical activity postpartum should be done gradually and with guidance from a pelvic physical therapist or appropriate exercise programs. Testing nutrient levels, including vitamin D, B12, and iron, is important to address any deficiencies and optimize energy and mental health during the postpartum period.
