Welcome to The Marinade, a free-flowing conversation about the creative process with creative people. Each episode we welcome musicians, actors, comedians, authors, visual artists, filmmakers- anyone who creates art to talk about how and why we make stuff. This is Episode 207 and our guest is Brian Dunne. Brian is a singer and songwriter from New York whose latest record Clams Casino was one of my favorites of 2025 and remains a constant companion. Rolling Stone called Clams Casino "an indie-rock, Paul Simon-evoking gem of a record." Yep. That's about right. Brian is an insightful guy and one hell of a songwriter. In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl, producer/musician Steve Berlin of Los Lobos dives into the chaotic world of Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs, recounting how a hard-living local legend became the heart of an unforgettable Los Angeles roots and cow-punk scene. The band's lone album - Pigus Drunkus Maximus - has just been reissued on Blind Owl Albums and its an incredible document of early L.A punk and rock history. Berlin explains how the band's loose, rotating lineup became legendary at the Café de Grande and drew everyone from punk icons to Hollywood personalities (Van Halen recorded a song called Top Jimmy in tribute to Jimmy; and Jimmy can be seen with John Doe in the Decline of Western Civilization. In addition to our conversation about Top Jimmy, Steve and host Scott Dudelson discuss early days with the Blasters and Los Lobos, the brotherly bond that keeps Los Lobos together after 50 years, an upcoming band documentary and behind the scenes stories recording both the La Bamba soundtrack (with Willie Dixon and Carlos Santana) and Graceland with Paul Simon (for which Los Lobos wrote "All Around the World or Myth of the Fingerprints" but never received credit or royalties). This episode is a deep, personal look at LA music history told by a musician and producer who lived it. Thank you for listening. This episode is a special one for me: Steve Gadd.Steve is not just a great drummer. He is one of those rare musicians whose feel and sound are instantly recognizable. A few seconds in, and you know it's him. He has been a first-call presence on recordings and tours for decades, and somehow, he makes the most complex things feel relaxed and human. Spending time with him for this conversation was a real honor. We begin in the present. In 2026, Steve is still moving forward with curiosity and purpose. He talks about starting the year with the Love Rocks benefit in New York, touring Europe with Michael Blicher and Dan Hemmer, rehearsing and touring with Paul Simon, and heading out again with James Taylor. Later in the year, he is back with Simon Oslender and Will Lee, a project that clearly brings him joy. You can hear how much he values character, maturity, and the spirit of the bandstand. We trace the roots of his musicianship through his time in the Army Field Band during the Vietnam era. Daily chart reading sharpened his time, discipline, and mindset. It was not always fun, but it was formative. He also reflects on mentorship, from Stanley Street to John Beck, and how those teachers shaped not just his hands but his confidence and identity.Steve speaks candidly about insecurity and imposter syndrome, about how reading is a skill that fades without use, and how repetition is the real secret. No shortcuts. We also dive into sound, volume, and dynamics. He shares his thoughts on live versus studio playing, the challenges of modern stage volume, and why the best shows begin at a real level and let the music breathe. What stays with me most is his philosophy. It is not about ego. It is about service, supporting the song, making the artist comfortable, and being a good teammate. This conversation captures a legend who is still learning, still listening, and still chasing feel and sound in the purest way.Music from the Episode:I Gotta Try (Michael McDonald)On a Roll (Live) (Simon Oslender)September Grass (James Taylor)My Rival (Steely Dan)Thank you for listening. Another country star on the rise. Jason Aldean is performing at Spark Arena tonight, and he's bringing with him Corey Kent – the latest Red Dirt star, according to Rolling Stone. Despite having been performing since he was a kid, it was a bumpy road to reach this point, complete with a happenstance performance with Willie Nelson, a change in jobs, and a lot of dedication. Kent's since gone triple platinum, released four albums, and had over a billion streams. He joined Mike Hosking for a chat about his career to date, and regaled him with stories of country legends Willie Nelson and Paul Simon. Low Stakes is what happens when two musicians get fed up with polite art and sanitized songwriting, trading it for sharp, unfiltered folk-rock that says the quiet part loud. Eric Colville and Ann Holbrook write with the lyricism of Paul Simon and John Prine, the hooks of The Byrd's or Tom Petty, and a true punk ethos. Their songs live in the friction between humor and heartbreak, absurdity and depth, grief and joy. It's the whole ridiculous mess of being human crammed into a melody. Low Stakes isn't background music; it's for people who are tired of swallowing their truth, who've laughed at funerals, raged at the news, and still somehow believe in something. Join the folk-rock music group Low Stakes and I as we talk about creating music, the songwriting process, finding creative inspiration, trusting your intuition and so much more! By the mid-1980s, apartheid-era South Africa was subject to a global cultural boycott, strongly advocated by the African National Congress (ANC) and supported by the United Nations. Musicians were explicitly asked not to perform, record, or collaborate in South Africa, regardless of intent. In 1984–85, Paul Simon traveled to South Africa to record with Black South African musicians, including members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. He did not seek ANC approval beforehand and broke the cultural boycott in the process. But was it worth it? Did Simon accomplish anything creatively or culturally worth his bold contravention of the global attitude toward the South African regime? The only way to find out is to turn on, tune in, and call me Al.Don't forget to follow us on social media and leave us a rating/review if you're enjoying the show!Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/UltimateCatalogueClashBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/ucatalogueclash.bsky.socialDiscord: https://discord.gg/mz9ymTwSSEKo-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/ultimatecatalogueclash Hosted on Acast. Carole King's Tapestry is so cozy, you'll want to hug it; sit with it. It sounds simple, warm, and totally unassuming. But it's way more impressive than it seems at first.Adam and Peter break down what's actually going on beneath the surface of Tapestry ... and what most people miss. Carole King was already an elite songwriter long before this album. You know Aretha Franklin's “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman”? Carole wrote that. “Will You Love Me Tomorrow” by The Shirelles? She wrote that, too. When she was just 17! Listen closely and you hear it everywhere: in the chord choices, in the way the she actually PLAYS the piano instead of just accompanying her vocals, and in the way her melodies and lyrics lock together so naturally you barely notice how intentional it all is. In 1986, Philip Glass released the album Songs from Liquid Days, which he called "a voyage of discovery" into the art of songwriting, working with lyricists like David Byrne, Paul Simon and Suzanne Vega and featuring vocalists including Linda Ronstadt and the Roches. On Sunday, Lincoln Center will celebrate the album's 40th anniversary with the organization New Latin Wave and the Philip Glass Ensemble. Featured vocalists Sasha Gutiérrez, Melisa Bonetti, and Kayla Viviana join us to preview the concert and perform excerpts from the song cycle.
The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded
Steve Berlin revisits Los Angeles during its most volatile creative period, the late 1970s and early 1980s, when rent was $170 a month and sewage regularly seeped into the Cathay de Grande, the basement club where Top Jimmy and the Rhythm Pigs held their Monday night residency. Berlin recalls producing and playing on their newly reissued album Pigus Drinkus Maximus and joining Los Lobos after they’d spent years developing east of the LA River, completely off the west side scene’s radar. He also addresses the Graceland controversy head-on: Paul Simon’s failure to credit Los Lobos for writing the music to ‘All Around the World or The Myth of Fingerprints.’ Berlin also discusses his work with REM, producing Faith No More, and offers a moving tribute to Mavericks frontman Raul Malo. In this episode, I sit down with singer, songwriter, bassist, and musical innovator Scott Mulvahill for a wide-ranging conversation about curiosity, collaboration, and building creative worlds. We start by talking about Scott's recent trip to Lafayette, Louisiana, where he performed Paul Simon's Graceland in a profoundly meaningful way, including sharing the stage with original Zydeco musicians who appeared on the album. Scott explains why Graceland was such a formative record for him as a teenager, how it shaped his love of songwriting, groove, and global musical connections, and why revisiting that music continues to teach him something new every time he performs it.We talk about Scott's busy life as a touring musician and collaborator, from solo performances to regional shows, symphonic work with Cody Fry, and juggling multiple projects at once. Scott reflects on saying yes to opportunities, spinning multiple creative plates, and why he's drawn to work that keeps him challenged rather than comfortable. He shares the story behind his band Slap Dragon, how the group came together organically, and why playing in a band scratches a different creative itch than performing solo. We also explore the balance between solitude and community in music, and how collaboration continues to fuel his artistic growth.A significant part of the conversation centers on Scott's experience as a singing bassist. We dig into the technical and musical challenges of singing while playing bass, especially in groove-heavy music, and how performing complex material like Graceland forces constant growth. Scott explains how difficulty, discipline, and repetition sharpen his musicianship and why pushing himself technically ultimately leads to deeper musical freedom. We also spend time talking about Scott's years playing with Ricky Skaggs, an experience he describes as musical graduate school. Scott shares what it was like to step into a bluegrass tradition without a drum set, how time feels differently in that genre, and why it took nearly a year to feel comfortable in the band. He reflects on learning directly from masters, developing an intuitive sense of rhythm, and why that experience shaped him as a musician in lasting ways. Finally, we dive deep into one of Scott's most ambitious projects, the Database. Scott explains the origin and evolution of this custom-built upright bass with integrated MIDI triggers and sampling, how it works technically, and why it allows him to expand his sonic world without sacrificing creativity or authenticity. We talk about technology as a tool rather than a gimmick, the balance between production and performance, and how the Database has reshaped his approach to songwriting, arrangement, and live shows. It's a thoughtful, inspiring conversation about experimentation, craftsmanship, and following curiosity wherever it leads. To learn more about Scott, visit his website.Music from the Episode:Begin Againers (Scott Mulvahill)Fighting for the Wrong Side (Scott Mulvahill)Survive (Scott Mulvahill)Thank you for listening. For the first time in our nearly eight years of being a podcast, we are presenting you coverage of a full length episode entirely on our YouTube Channel! This week is week two of our episodic series following every Pearl Jam tour year in chronological order, which means we're covering one of the most important years in their history - 1992. After a year of playing small venues and opening up for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam's popularity was growing in 1992 mainly due to radio and music video networks playing Alive and Even Flow. But the band truly saw their fame escalate once their MTV Unplugged performance aired and the Jeremy music video hit rotation, the former of which happening two nights before this show in San Francisco. We'll get into deep discussion over how good the band sounded this night and Ed's on stage mannerisms featuring clips from the entire show. We'll also talk about some discoveries made when listening to this bootleg, including a Paul Simon song that was tagged, and perhaps the first hint at Yellow Ledbetter live. Massive versions of Black, Porch, Alive, Once and all of the favorites from the Ten era will dominate the conversation as well, and we pay tribute to a man deeply connected with San Francisco who we lost this past week, Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead. The Not Ready for Prime Time Podcast: The Early Years of SNL
Milestones are supposed to shine. SNL's 100th did something stranger: it skipped a host, stacked cameos, and unintentionally made flogging history when Paul Shaffer became the first person to drop the F bomb during the live broadcast. For the first time, Saturday Night Live goes without a proper host, relying instead on a slew of cameos. From Michael O'Donoghue and John Belushi (twice!) to Ralph Nader, Michael Palin, and NYS senator Daniel Moynihan - apparently NOT related to Bobby - who pops up twice. And, if you look closely, current Paul Simon girlfriend Carrie Fisher sneaks into a sketch. All of which add to a show that while entertaining, often feels discombobulated. But don't worry! Friend of the show Paul Simon returns (of course) to sing a few songs alongside James Taylor (who also appears in a sketch). And, in keeping with this episode's spirit of sharing the wealth, SNL-bandmember David Sanborn also plays a song.Happy 100th, SNL!
