The digital design guide is a great way to start looking at how chips work. If you aren't quite ready for silicon, Wokwi has a Verilog simulator where you can learn to do the digital design. The Verilog Simon Game on Wokwi is amazing.  Wokwi is a web-Based simulator, simulating processors, boards, and peripherals. You can build a whole system there, from Dancing Servos to 7-Segment display from 30  LCDs and Arduino Mega to Raspberry Pi Pico boards you can program in C when you click More Options on the front page. You can also create your own peripheral using the Chip API. Or learn to use Zephyr on Wokwi. And now there is Wokwi for VS Code.  All that and Wokwi is open source: github.com/urish Uri recommends reading Relax for the same result by Derek Sivers Previously on Embedded 396: Untangle the Mess Transcript

In today's episode I am talking to Swedish homebrew hacker Konrad Beckmann. Around summer last year Konrad announced a project to create a Nintendo 64 flash cart by using nothing more complex than a Raspberry Pi Pico. Recently Konrad made big progress on his project to use a Pico to get a digital HDMI-like signal from the N64. His ethos is to find ways to hack these devices as cheaply as possible. Konrad explains both projects to us in good technical detail. I do my best to keep up with such clever talk. 0:00 Start 2:00 Konrad's background 5:00 Why the Raspberry Pi Pico is excellent for embedded hcking 9:55 Using the Pico vs the raw RP2040 chip 14:30 The 2 versions of the PicoCart64: Easy and complex 20:00 Konrad's view on open source 22:00 When to announce an open source project? 24:00 Konrad's first computer 31:00 Sweden was rocking home internet in '95 35:00 Pico N64 digital HDMI mod 43:00 Konrad explains how 7-bit RGB works 51:00 HDMI via the Pico now has a real HDMI port 55:00 Is a external scaler the future of HDMI projects? 1:01:15 Do we need a generic N64 flex cable for other hackers? Last time we checked in on the PicoW CircuitPy progress, we saw the onboard LED blinking - basically proving that the SPI transport and firmware upload was working. This round, we're starting to see the beginnings of integration support, with the ability to read the MAC address, scan for accessible SSIDs, and connect to get an IP address! there's still a lot more to do, like DNS support, LWIP integration and a TLS stack, so it's great to see progress

This firmware UF2 for the Raspberry Pi Pico W LOOKS simple enough... on boot it blinks the onboard LED 3 times and then boots into CircuitPython 8. but, looks can be deceiving! the LED on the Pico W is not connected to a GPIO on the RP2040... it's connected to a GPIO on the WiFi/BLE module! that blinking means that we're able to load firmware and communicate with the module in the CircuitPython firmware, an important first step before we implement the rest of the wireless stack. soon, we'll have CircuitPython and the hundreds of libraries and IoT examples ready to run on the Pico W, we can't wait to show you more as we get ready for folks to test it out :) Visit the Adafruit shop online - http://www.adafruit.com ----------------------------------------- LIVE CHAT IS HERE! http://adafru.it/discord Adafruit on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/adafruit Subscribe to Adafruit on YouTube: http://adafru.it/subscribe New tutorials on the Adafruit Learning System: http://learn.adafruit.com/ ----------------------------------------- #adafruit #raspberrypi #circuitpython

A lot of excitement for the PS4 and PS5 (and possibly even PS3) with a new entry point showcased using BD-J! This being "bd-jb" showing the possibility of jailbreaking the PS4 and PS5 using a Blu-ray disc burned using the BD-J format. We also go back to the PS1 showing PicoMemcard which is a useful way of making a PS1 compatible memory card you can easily hook up to a PC using a Raspberry Pi Pico! The original Xbox gets an awesome development showing that RAM upgrades are now possible on 1.6 motherboards. The Wii U also gets a pretty awesome Recovery Menu option thanks to the release of UPDIH which can be launched using the oh so familiar Raspberry Pi Pico. We also highlight an awesome writeup covering the Xbox 360's architecture and an upcoming N64 emulator plugin called RT64.

We got a user request today for a board that would convert a Raspberry Pi Pico $4 microcontroller board to use Arduino shields. An interesting idea! Let's go through what we do at the Desk when a new idea like this is presented to gauge feasibility. The Great Search - 5V eFuse https://www.digikey.com/short/b9c215hd eFuses are a nifty way to protect your electronics from over/under powering - handy for maker electronics AND industrial equipment that needs to keep chugging along no matter what happens to the power supply. We had someone ask us to design a board that would take 4xAA input and give USB output - one way to do that is with a buck-boost converter (which we already have) but maybe we could get away with a lower-cost and complexity design. Instead we'll look for an eFuse that will permit no more than about 5.5V and have reverse current, reverse voltage and under/over voltage protection! Design of CPython’s Garbage Collector: https://devguide.python.org/garbage_collector/. Issue24676: Error in pickle using cProfile https://bugs.python.org/issue24676. Issue9914: trace/profile conflict with the use of sys.modules[__name__] https://bugs.python.org/issue9914. Issue9325: Add an option to pdb/trace/profile to run library module as a script https://bugs.python.org/issue9325. [22:52] Puedes usar tipos o no. Son opcionales. Ventajas en equipos grandes. Linter: https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lint. "typeshed": Collection of library stubs for Python, with static types: https://github.com/python/typeshed. [54:46] El operador morsa no se puede usar dentro de un "list comprehension": >>> [i for i in ('a', '' ,'b') if i := i.strip()] File "", line 1 [i for i in ('a', '' ,'b') if i := i.strip()] ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax No queda otra que escribirlo como: >>> [i.strip() for i in ('a', '' ,'b') if i.strip()] ['a', 'b'] duplicando el i.strip(). El texto era https://docs.python.org/3.7/reference/compound_stmts.html#the-try-statement: When a return, break or continue statement is executed in the try suite of a try...finally statement, the finally clause is also executed ‘on the way out.’ A continue statement is illegal in the finally clause. (The reason is a problem with the current implementation — this restriction may be lifted in the future). [01:34:22] Libro "CPython Internals": https://realpython.com/products/cpython-internals-book/. Website de "Real Python": https://realpython.com/. Merece bastante la pena. También tienen podcast: "The Real Python Podcast: Python Tips, Interviews, and More" https://realpython.com/podcasts/rpp/. [01:38:52] "AutoScraper: A Smart, Automatic, Fast and Lightweight Web Scraper for Python" https://pypi.org/project/autoscraper/. ¿Hace falta? [01:59:12] Memoria escasa en un microcontrolador. [01:59:55] Final.

Raspberry Pi Pico: https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/raspberry-pi-pico/. Micropython: https://www.micropython.org/. [06:02] Truco: Python -i: Ejecuta un script y pasa a modo interactivo. Patrón Post/Redirect/Get (PRG) https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post/Redirect/Get. Design of CPython’s Garbage Collector: https://devguide.python.org/garbage_collector/. Fira Code Retina: https://github.com/tonsky/FiraCode/issues/872. [01:35:52] Algunos trucos cortos adicionales. collections.deque: https://docs.python.org/3/library/collections.html. dateutil: https://pypi.org/project/python-dateutil/. itertools: https://docs.python.org/3/library/itertools.html. if a < x < b: >>> import dis >>> dis.dis(lambda x: a < x < b) 1 0 LOAD_GLOBAL 0 (a) 2 LOAD_FAST 0 (x) 4 DUP_TOP 6 ROT_THREE 8 COMPARE_OP 0 ( 18 ROT_TWO 20 POP_TOP 22 RETURN_VALUE Desempaquetado complejo: >>> a, b, (c, d), *e, f = 1, 2, (3, 4), 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 >>> print(a,b,c,d,e,f) 1 2 3 4 [5, 6, 7, 8] 9 Usar la variable "guión bajo" para descartar valores. Ojo con la internacionalización. [01:56:22] Python cada vez tiene más "gotchas". Algunos ejemplos: Operador morsa.

High Risk/High Reward: Stories from my Life in Technology

A pure celebration of geekdom and nerd squads. As I said to my daughter just before recording this: "I'm like a super geekazoid, huh?" Her answer: "Yeah you are." Aha! Someone agrees with me! This episode stays in the technical domain. There's a lot to talk about in the world of computers and the components that enable them. We will be going from a discussion of Raspberry Pi to the Apple M1 creating a mighty hunger for some Apple Pie.I received a parcel from across the pond today. It contained a Raspberry Pi Pico, the new $4 programmable microprocessor, arriving from the England. The Pi Pico intrigues me because I have already thought of some cool projects to use them for. One of the projects is a sweet Valentine's oriented couple's project: to merge my sweetie Sue's hobby (arts and crafts) with my geeky creations to create something interesting and fun. Now I just have to implement at least part of it by Valentine's day because I think this is a clever, unique, interesting way to bring our leisure hobbies together. How much more (super geek) romantic could something be? I am not joking about this either.I had already been in the middle of several Raspberry Pi projects using Pi Zero W, several Pi 3bs, and a Pi 4/4GB RAM. The image for this episode shows some of the Pi boards, my soldering workstation, and peripheral components such as a hi quality camera, sound cards and synthesizers, a breadboard and other cool nerd toys. If you look closely, there's a yellow CD case from Symantec C++, a product I worked on while working at Symantec in the early 1990s. It's there as a reminder and behind it are some Jibo robots. I "stage" my work areas to always include something inspirational whether a book, product, picture, guitar, piece of some product from my 40 years as a maker, or pictures of puppies. Many products are mentioned. None paid or asked for placement. This remains an non-monetized, unbiased, rant-oriented podcast series. But at the end I hint that one of the companies should consider sponsoring me in some way based on the plans I have to do business with them.Music is just some pre-Super Bowl snippets from a 45 minute, high gain, loud, experimental jam. It was like driving a Mustang Cobra with 600 Horsepower on the verge of losing its grip on the pavement. This is why we love tubes. The responsiveness and added harmonic content is delicious and oh so satisfying. Apologies to Ms Sue. I played super duper loud pushing all 4 tubes in the recording chain to their limits and letting the Tele bridge pickup work it's magic. Played on Liz The Firecracker (2020 Squier by Fender Affinity Tele with special upgrades) through Blackstar Studio 10 KT88 with new Genalex Gold Lion tubes for both the 12AX7 preamp and KT88 power amp. Another Gold Lion in the SM57's signal chain pointed two inches off center of the Celestion, and an Electro Harmonix 12AX7 LPS in the Rode NT5 room mics signal chain. All tubes hand selected and modern Russian-made reissues of the classic British tubes.Blah, blah, blah. My intros are longer than the episodes!
