Tens of thousands of British, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers from across Britain's empire had fought Japan. Thousands were taken as prisoners of war and held in appalling conditions. British civilians were also captured and interned. We learn about Shelagh Brown who was held captive for three and a half years, after fleeing her home in Singapore, then a British colony, when the Japanese invaded.The Women's Rugby World Cup, being held in England, starts a week today. Before 1947, the United States did not have peacetime intelligence-gathering agencies such as the CIA. Foreign policy was formulated on an informal basis. Episode #379: “It's a different migration story,” reflects Amy Hardingson, speaking about her enduring connection to her Burmese heritage, a thread stretching across generations. Her great-grandmother, Hilda, embodied this love, embarking on the perilous Great Trek during World War II to India in 1941. A member of the Eurasian community in Burma, Hilda fled with her three-year-old daughter and seven-month-old son (Amy's grandfather). After losing her husband to malaria during the arduous journey, Hilda and her children were interned by the Japanese in a concentration camp for over a year. Because events like D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa took place an entire lifetime ago, it is rare to find any new accounts and memories from veterans. Thankfully, forty years after the publication of Eugene Sledge's famous memoir With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa comes The Old Breed… The Complete Story Revealed (Knox Press, 2025) by Eugene's son, Henry. Complementing and expanding on his father's experiences, Henry Sledge's book adds new material and immeasurable depth to his father's story and shows how World War II continues to shape our lives. The Old Breed… The Complete Story Revealed brings to life an abundance of new material from the original manuscript of Eugene Sledge's classic memoir With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa. The 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific has been observed with surviving World War II veterans joining ceremonies around the nation.

Today marks eighty years since VJ Day - Victory over Japan Day - when Japan surrendered and World War Two ended. Post-war, twelve thousand New Zealand troops went to Japan to 'de-militarise' the country. To commemorate the anniversary, Nga Taonga Sound and Vision is sharing some 200 historical audio recordings of New Zealanders who served in Japan as part of "J-Force". Sound Historian Sarah Johnston has been working with these recordings and shares some of them with Emile.

Friends of the Rosary,Today, August 14, is the Memorial of St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe (1894-1941), a Polish Franciscan, friar, priest, and martyr of Auschwitz, who founded a movement of Marian consecration called Militia of the Immaculata, With his preaching and writing, he undertook an intense apostolic mission in Europe and Asia.Imprisoned in Auschwitz during the Second World War, he offered himself in exchange for a young father of a large family who was to be executed, Francis Gajowniczek.When the captors couldn't kill him from starvation in the concentration camp, they ended his life with a lethal injection on August 14, 1941.In 1927, he established an evangelization center near Warsaw called Niepokalanow, the "City of the Immaculata." By 1939, the City had expanded from eighteen friars to an incredible 650, making it the largest Catholic religious house in the world.To better "win the world for the Immaculata," the friars utilized modern printing and administrative techniques, enabling countless catechetical and devotional works, a daily newspaper with a circulation of 230,000, and a monthly magazine with a circulation of over one million.Maximilian started a shortwave radio station and planned to build a motion picture studio—he was a true "apostle of the mass media." He established a City of the Immaculata in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1930, and envisioned missionary centers worldwide.Maximilian was a ground-breaking theologian. His insights into the Immaculate Conception anticipated the Marian theology of the Second Vatican Council and further developed the Church's understanding of Mary as "Mediatrix" of all the graces of the Trinity, and as "Advocate" for God's people.Pope St. John Paul II canonized him in 1982 and proclaimed him a "martyr of charity" and "Patron Saint of Our Difficult Century." Violent crimes rates in cities like Washington D.C. might be falling but they remain hundreds of times above the national average. Their drop may also be a result of a neglect to even report crimes. National Guard troops being sent into the city will do very little if anything to stop non-violent crime either because crimes are usually reported after the fact, both violent and non-violent. Troops are not going to stop burglary, larceny, and grand theft auto. Besides, why is crime so bad and how do these conditions develop? Also, what is the point of going after drug cartels south of the border if pharmaceutical cartels are left alone? Few know that south and Central American drug cartels get funding, weapons, and training from the Israeli government, just as that country's military and former IDF train U.S. police departments. The increase in crime, drug use, illegal immigration, etc., is not just the result of social democracy but according to Israeli newspapers a punishment for the U.S. not taking enough Jewish refuges during WWII, even though they took the most. A recent Times of Israel article also claimed that Trump is burdened with Epstein controversy because he dared to question the Israeli Prime Minister, i.e., he isn't Israel-first enough. This is precisely how Zionist terrorist groups treated British mandated Palestine, with acts of terrorism against British officials because they didn't give them enough of what they demanded. Israel has also killed 6 journalists recently, and hundreds since 2023, blaming their deaths on affiliations with Hamas, while ignoring thousands of protestors in Tel Aviv who would be hard to classify as Hamas supporters. Because events like D-Day and the Battle of Okinawa took place an entire lifetime ago, it is rare to find any new accounts and memories from veterans. Thankfully, forty years after the publication of Eugene Sledge's famous memoir With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa comes The Old Breed… The Complete Story Revealed (Knox Press, 2025) by Eugene's son, Henry. Complementing and expanding on his father's experiences, Henry Sledge's book adds new material and immeasurable depth to his father's story and shows how World War II continues to shape our lives. The Old Breed… The Complete Story Revealed brings to life an abundance of new material from the original manuscript of Eugene Sledge's classic memoir With the Old Breed at Peleliu and Okinawa. By interspersing his own personal anecdotes throughout, Henry Sledge takes his father's work and gives it newfound context, sharing memories of conversations between father and son. The Quest for Harmony Born amid the chaos of World War II, Udo Erasmus's journey began with trauma and survival. Fleeing Poland as a child, dodging bullets and bombs, he experienced fear, hunger, and deep mistrust in the world. By age six, he was already wondering, "There must be a way people can live in harmony." That question became the compass of his life. As Erasmus grew, so did his search for answers. He studied science, biology, psychology, and medicine, only to find these disciplines offered fragmented insights—not the holistic understanding he craved. Psychology taught thoughts and emotions but never soul. Medicine spoke endlessly about disease, but ignored health. The deeper questions remained: What is life? What is health? What is our nature? The Forgotten Inner Foundation Udo argues that every human being carries within them a core of peace, love, and wisdom—an unchanging, ever-present essence often buried under layers of distraction, trauma, and disconnection. He compares the human experience to our time in the womb, where we were suspended in pure being: no stress, no external demands, only awareness and peace. As we grow and adapt to the world, we often lose touch with this foundational state, leading to what Erasmus calls the universal ache of disconnection: heartache. Heartache is not a weakness or failure, but a signal—a call to return to ourselves. Much like thirst points us to water, heartache points us back to the source of our own being. Energy First, Matter Second A central idea in Erasmus's philosophy is that energy—not matter—is the origin and master of life. From the Big Bang to a blossoming flower, from the light in our cells to the love in our hearts, all life is governed by the flow of energy. While science seeks to understand the body through external observation, it often misses the experiential truth that life is already managing countless functions within us without our conscious control. He points to the sun as the ultimate source: it fuels plants, feeds animals, and animates human beings. From Self to Service For over 50 years, Erasmus has engaged in a daily practice to reconnect with the inner foundation of peace. Triggered by an early psychedelic experience and catalyzed by a mystical vision, he found that the answers he was chasing through intellectual study were already inside him. This practice is not religious nor scientific—it is experiential. It begins with recognizing heartache and using it as a portal inward. Once grounded in inner peace and health, Erasmus believes we naturally shift our focus from self-preservation to service. "When I feel cared for by life itself, I can ask: Where can I help?" This is the foundation for total global health—each person becoming whole, and from that wholeness, contributing to the healing of others and the planet. Erasmus's vision is not utopian fantasy. It is grounded in biology, physics, and firsthand experience. We already have the tools: sunlight, breath, food, rest, love, and awareness. Peter Jakob Kühn made the wines at Weingut Peter Jakob Kühn in Germany's Rheingau region for many decades before retiring and passing the family winery on to his son Peter Bernhard Kühn.Peter Jakob, who was born in 1954, alludes to the constrained economic situation that existed in the German countryside following the Second World War. He recalls his grandfather, who had lived through two World Wars, and the relationship that his grandfather had with the rest of the family. Peter Jakob then describes meeting his wife and taking over the family winery in 1979 in the wake of his father's death. He recalls what steps he took to improve the quality of the wines and add to the size of the estate in the early days after assuming control. He contrasts his approach to the vineyards with the post-War emphasis on high yields that some of neighbors pursued. Peter Jakob speaks about a trip to Burgundy that served as an early inspiration. He also describes the setting and landscape of the area within the Rheingau where the winery is situated.Peter Jakob converted the estate to Biodynamic farming, and he describes the very personal reasons for that and other key decisions. As the quality of the wines improved, so did Peter Jakob's level of satisfaction with his own wines and their renown in the critical press. Peter Jakob describes how his mindset changed in response to both praise and some failure from others to understand the direction he was taking the wines. Specifically, he addresses the 1999 vintage for the winery and the malolactic conversion that took place in that year and others afterwards. He then talks about how a malolactic conversion changes the characteristics of a Riesling, and describes his vision for what a Riesling can be. Then he contrasts that vision for a Riesling with the stereotype of a racy, fruity German Riesling, which he was trying to avoid. Looking back from this vantage point, Peter Jakob describes the importance of his experimental phase in the early 2000s, as he tried different techniques in the winery. He also pinpoints his motivations for making those experiments and changes in the winery. He further discusses dry Germany Riesling and his thoughts on the topic, which are intertwined with a change in the climate as well as his personal experience.
