After the Second World War, France decided to reassert control over French Indochina. This policy met strong resistance from both Communist and right-wing political and military organizations in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. Resistance grew, leading to the First Indochina War (1946-1954). This conflict ended with the Geneva Agreements, in which the French agreed to depart, the country would be temporarily divided between a Communist North and a non-Commuist south, and elections would be held in 1956…or would they? Two hundred and ninety-nine episodes ago, we could not have possibly imagined George Takei appearing on the podcast. Some version of the actor has hung in our imaginations for most of our lives, and we spent many days of our early marriage obsessing over Star Trek, the original series, and its subsequent films. Thankfully, through this beautiful medium called comic books, our paths have crossed, and we get to celebrate our three-hundredth episode with one of our creative and cultural heroes. Takei's latest graphic novel, It Rhymes With Takei, reunites him with the same creative team behind They Called Us Enemy: artist Harmony Becker and writers Steven Scott and Justin Eisinger. Together, they tell the rest of Takei's story, which includes his time in the Japanese American internment camps during World War II. It Rhymes With Takei explores the many lessons George Takei learned from that experience, how it shaped his activism, and gave him the courage to battle through the numerous other injustices he would face and fight for and alongside others. The word "dystopia" gets thrown around a lot these days. It's certainly a go-to for us, and when you look outside your window or scroll through your phone, it's an easy, seemingly apt descriptor. Star Trek has started to feel like fantasy, not science fiction. However, George Takei encourages us to hang onto utopian possibilities. He asks us to accept the inevitability of change but strive toward a brighter, better future. As the news continuously fills us with dread, we needed this conversation with George Takei, and we're grateful to share it with you, beautiful comic book friends. She noticed that her father-in-law, the quiet sailor, alsoendured as did many other veterans she met. The silence of these men and women is the spiritbehind the haunting ballad, “SOLDIERS NOT FORGOT.”Released just before Memorial Day, this is a song giving voice to what generations of veteranscouldn't say out loud. It is a tribute “to my father,” Pamela says, “and all who now defend anddid defend and protect our country.”While working on the musical Artland, with Stanley Clarke, the lyrics of this song lingered as shekept thinking about soldiers returning from war. Who did they talk to? How did they feel? Howlonely they must have been. This was long before therapy apps or terms like PTSD.“SOLDIERS NOT FORGOT” is a slow burn. Singer Lain Roy, whose family has a militarybackground, carries the track with a voice that blends soulful grit (reminiscent of John Legend)with deep feeling and memory. As the song reaches its climax, Roy soars into a sustained highnote as the music drops out. Each theater of war during World War 2 offered something unique and dangerous, Europe it was the winters, the Pacific had tropical diseases, but North Africa, it was a whole different ballgame. A desert stretching more than 2,000 miles from Morocco to Egypt with a lotta wide open spaces between. When Hitler invaded France on May 10, 1940, Mussolini waited with bated breath for the right moment to announce he was taking his talents to the Axis IYKYK. 4 weeks into the Battle of France it was obvious France wasn't going to keep Germany out of her, so Mussolini makes his declaration of war on the Allies June 10.. Now Benny had told Adolf he wasn't gonna be ready until 1942 to make with the warring but the prospect of expanding across N. Africa (they already controlled Libya, which happens to border British controlled Egypt) was too good to pass up. Mussolini believed Hitler's planned invasion of the British home islands would pull a large amount of forces away from Egypt and it would be easy pickings. He'd capture the Suez Canal and control the Mediterranean, preventing the Allies from launching any invasions from the south. Well Hitler's invasion never happened but Benito was so excited he decided to go forward with the battle for North Africa anyway. It started out pretty much how you'd expect for the Italians, they weren't ready, the British were. The Royal Navy reigned supreme in the Med which meant for the duration of the North Africa Campaign, all supplies coming from Italy were under attack. It didn't take long for Mussolini to go hat in hand to Hitler and ask for help. Hitler decided to send one of his most decorated general's at the time, Erwin Rommel to clean up the Italian mess. What followed was the first real instance of Axis vs Allies on a large scale and it served to influence how the war was going to be fought going forward. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- In response to a series of ICE raids intended to remove migrants residing in the United States unlawfully, protests broke out in Los Angeles, California—sometimes turning violent and destructive. Videos circulating on social media show ICE agents being assaulted with bricks and commercial-grade fireworks. Numerous vehicles—including Waymo self-driving taxis—were set on fire by violent demonstrators. Other videos show demonstrators burning American flags and chanting “F*** ICE.” As the protests carried on into the night on Sunday, multiple businesses were looted in downtown Los Angeles, according to reports. President Donald Trump used the National Guard to stifle ongoing violence—and on Monday night, the administration authorized the deployment of 700 Marines. According to estimations from CNN, at least 113 people were arrested on Monday. 3:15pm- While speaking from the Oval Office on Tuesday, President Donald Trump was asked about Saturday's parade in Washington D.C. to celebrate the Army's 250th birthday. Trump explained the importance of celebrating our country and its achievements, specifically referencing America's victory over authoritarianism in World War II—“We are the one that won the war. If it wasn't for us, you would be speaking German right now, ok? We won the war and—you might be speaking Japanese, too. You might be speaking a combination of both." 3:30pm- While appearing on CNN with host Dana Bash, Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) accused President Donald Trump of being an authoritarian for deploying the California National Guard to stifle violent outbreaks in Los Angeles. DURING THE FIRST year of the Second World War, the conflict in the Pacific was all about aircraft carriers. With a carrier, one could take the fight to the enemy. Without one, one could only huddle on an island as a passive target, waiting for an enemy carrier's aircraft to arrive and attack. When the war broke out, the U.S. had seven of these precious warships, but only three were in the Pacific. They were the actual targets of the attack on Pearl Harbor — the Japanese knew if they could get them out of the way, they'd have a free hand for at least a year. It had taken an average of more than three years to build a regular full-size aircraft carrier before the war. Mobilization would cut that timeframe to under a year, but that was still a long wait. The Japanese almost had a free hand for that year anyway. Much of their equipment was just more advanced in 1942, especially airplanes. By the end of that year the U.S. was down to one carrier. Both sides were hurriedly converting existing ships to bolster their fleets, but it certainly looked, from far away, as if the U.S. was not too far from ending up in that helpless position that the Japanese had hoped to put it in with the Pearl Harbor attack. Carriers were rare, complicated ships, hard and time-consuming to build. Japan had lost four of their best ones at Midway, but they still had at least six left. And that's about the point at which Henry Kaiser decided to go into the aircraft-carrier business.... In the fall of 1940, an employ of the Consolidated Edison Company in Manhattan discovered a bomb in the company's main offices, along with a note that read “Con Edison crooks – this is for you.” The bomb was discovered before it detonated and no one was harmed, but a year later the company received a second bomb, followed by a note to NYPD in which the bomber announced he would make no bombs for the duration of WWII, but would begin again as the war ended.As promised, a new series of bombings began across New York in the winter of 1951, beginning with an explosion at Grand Central Station. In the five years that followed, “The Mad Bomber,” as he would come to be known, would place explosives at some of New York's most iconic locations including Radio City Music Hall, Penn Station, and the New York Public Library. Tucked away in the heart of Springfield, Missouri, stands a towering limestone fortress with a past as layered and mysterious as its walls, the Pythian Castle.
