The boys are back for Sub-Level 4 of the Backrooms Podcast!! In a industry hyper-saturated with dime-a-dozen button mashers and mindless time killers, there are a growing number of games that tower above the masses as narrative "blockbusters" nearly fit for showtimes at your local AMC! But do games need to have Oscar-worthy levels of storytelling to be enjoyable, or is it fine to just switch our brains off and get lost in the flow of a great gameplay loop? Join us in the first episode of this new season of somewhat intelligent and barely engaging game analysis, and you may hopefully find an answer! (no guarantees)

Have you come across a map on social media showing the ratio of female to male metal musicians by country? Or have you seen a bar graph showing what months the most metal albums are released annually? If you have, there is a good chance that you have come across data visualizations created by Metal Stats. In this episode, the Boo Boo Butt Boys™ Judge Dredd and Wulf interview Metal Stats about his process for scraping and shaping data from Metal Archives while controlling for variables. They discuss the eternal questions regarding regionalism in metal, such as the infamous Denmark Paradox (a.k.a. in light of having produced Mercyful Fate, why did Denmark never produce black metal to the same degree that the rest of their Scandinavian brethren did?). We also explore the relationship between a country's GDP and metal produced by that country. Finally, we investigate why both creators and viewers of data visualization need to think critically about data that is being presented.  We make references to many maps and graphs, mostly created by Metal Stats, throughout the episode. Check out the links below to see them for yourselves! Episode References: Map of countries by metal bands per capita Metal bands in Finland per capita by municipality Comparison of metal bands per country per 1 million people and country average happiness score European metal vs. non-metal albums statistics Deep dive and analysis of the trifecta Ratio of female to male metal musicians by country (1 female:100 male ratio) Metal databases beyond Metal Archives Metal release counts over time by release type (LP, EP, video, box set, etc.) Metal release type breakdown by percentage of all releases by subgenre Metal band name length distribution How many albums have metal bands typically released? The radio version of Space Patrol aired from October 4, 1952 to March 19, 1955, for a total of 129 episodes. The same cast performed on both the radio and television versions. The writers, scripts, and directors were also the same for both versions. However, the radio broadcasts were not limited by studio sets and could therefore be more expensive in scope than the television programs. This allowed for more elaborate special effects and sound design, which helped to create a more immersive experience for listeners. While there was seldom any deliberate crossover between the two versions, some of the television villains regularly appeared on the radio (notably Prince Bacarratti). Additionally, both the TV and radio versions explored the rogue planet's invasion of the Space Patrol universe during the "Planet X" story. This was a major story arc that spanned multiple episodes and helped to raise the stakes for the characters. While the radio series lacked the sophistication of sci-fi shows like the later X Minus One, it was enjoyed by many as a throwback to the Golden Age of space opera popularized in the 1930s by pioneering magazine editor Hugo Gernsback. Of the original broadcasts, only 117 survive. 97 are on the OTR site and a few others on torrent sites. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen0/support

Following Beast's Golden Three, we take a deeper dive into the Craftworld Eldar in this episode, talking about their technology, the Craftworlds themselves, how their society has changed and evolved, and what type of troops they deploy. We realized going into this episode that we will need to come back and give the Drukhari and Harlequins their own mini-series, while Yannari, Exodites, and Outcasts will most likely get their own full episodes as well. As always UHM dives deep into the lore of the horror and grimdark setting of Warhammer 40k, so expect adult themes, adult language, and more than a few dad jokes! I heard those nice fellows on Sublevel 44 were offering newsletters full of advice for 4 Armed Emperor's... but who knows how well you can trust cultists! Hope you enjoy the show and here's some more information on the man himself: L.A based Blakkat AKA Mark Bell has moved through the music world applying his golden touch to many surfaces. From a life with the major labels to the finest in underground house music clubs, the man places a stamp of quality on all that he touches. Never losing touch with the underground, Mark has been a featured vocalist for King Britt’s Sylk 130 Project as well as for Funk D’ Void and released on Josh Wink’s seminal Ovum label. It was in conjunction with the Philadelphia label that he produced his biggest underground hit to date, the massive Tweek & Roll single with label boss Wink. Continuing to put out quality material, today’s label bosses frequently turn to Blakkat for dance floor killers, with his tracks remixed by today’s hottest underground names, such as KINK, Agnes and Manuel Tur. Add this to a CV that already includes the celebrated results of studio sessions with Felix Da Housecat, Josh Wink, DJ Sneak and Marshall Jefferson, while Chez Damier, Zero 7, Jamiroqui, Wyclef Jean, A Tribe Called Quest, and The Jungle Brothers have all received his remix treatment. Blakkat  productions have been remixed by David Morales, Basement Jazz, Todd Terry, Steve Bug and Armand Van Helden. Balancing this output with his own projects, Mark runs his own label Shaboom as an outlet for his own talents. It is Mark’s ability to turn in classically influenced modern house that distinguishes a Blakkat jam. Whether it be raw Chicago acid or smooth New York deepness, his assured production guarantees Mark’s tracks will move a room. The timeless quality of his work is evident in all he does, with his DJ sets referencing the past 25 years of house music with a modern, infectious twist. Regular appearances at Doc Martin’s legendary Sub Level parties best show his skills, always rocking a fiercely loyal and knowledgeable crowd.  This talent has seen Mark break into the international circuit, working the floor at some of the world’s hottest clubs. Whether as a DJ or Live act, clubs such as PS1 (New York), Fabric (London), Revival (Los Angeles), Avalon (New York) Opium (Miami) The Gathering (San Francisco), Back 2 Basics (Leeds UK) Vanguard (Los Angeles), Sunset (San Francisco), Turbo (Toronto), Paradiso (Amserdam), Metropolis (Berlin), The End (London) Renaissance (Global) and Circus (Liverpool). An original member of multi-platinum selling Mercury Prize winners M People, Mark Bell was signed as a solo artist to Atlantic Records, Hollwood Records, Warners, BMG and Sony, but it is his desire to rock dance floors and gain a real connection with crowds that is driving behind the decks at the best underground spots around. Placing Blakkat in the hottest clubs around will be Barcelona based Common People. He will build on this partnership further through various projects with the boys from Spain. How to Overcome "Best Practices" Overload for Your Agency

Smart Agency Masterclass with Jason Swenk: Podcast for Digital Marketing Agencies

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 1, 2017 31:18

Is your agency stuck in a "best practices" rut? Are you following so-called industry best practices without seeing results? If you’re in a place where excitement and momentum have puttered out and you think your agency has plateaued, you’ve hit what my guest calls your “crapping point” :) It's time to start asking the right questions and creating your own best practices. In this episode we’ll cover: Understanding your context and its three components. How to create your own formula for best practices. How to not fall into the best practices trap. Today’s guest is Jay Acunzo, is Sorry for Marketing and shares it all as a keynote speaker, blogger and host of the podcast, Unthinkable. Jay has an impressive background in the tech world and with start-ups, including a career at Google and Hubspot. He also did investing in start-ups for a firm, so his experience and insight comes from both sides of the aisle. Jay understands the importance of asking a lot of questions, the right questions, and turning away from conventional thinking. Today he is in a fight with best practices because “it has never been easier to be average.” If you aren’t seeing the results you expected and your agency has “Crapped Out,” Jay is here to give us some tips on how to better find your best practices by asking the right questions so you can stand out, rather than blend in. Understanding Your Agency’s Context Your context consists of three things: Those doing the work - yourself, your agency, your team Those receiving the work - your audience, the customer or client Your resources - the means to make things a reality If you find yourself asking “Why isn’t this working?” don’t forget to start adding the word “us” to the equation…. Such as: “Why isn’t this working… for us?” The best practices that might work for one company, may not for yours because your context is different. “Success leaves clues.” ~ Tony Robbins Success might leave clues, but it doesn’t leave answers. Best practices are simply a possibility that still need to be put through the filter, that is your context and then add your details to, and find, a best practice that will work for you. It is time to start thinking for yourself and not just following a list. You are the expert of your agency’s context. How To Create Your Own Formula for Best Practices One word: INTUITION We aren’t talking about the gut feeling you get from emotion and running with it. We are talking about the defined word, Intuition, which has roots in Latin that mean: Knowledge from within In other words, this circles back to knowing your stuff -- knowing your context The best way to know your context is to make sure you are asking the right questions for the three things that make up your context, listed above, Yourself, Your Audience and Your Resources. Visualize your intuition as a thing or tool that is on par with a list article. Understand that Intuition is that compounding return you experience from, constantly asking questions and understanding your context, and making the right call. Trust your INTUITION. How To Avoid the Best Practices Trap It all starts with a shift from the desire of knowing the answer, to caring more about how to find answers. This mindshift begins with asking the right questions of your context points. Each component has two questions and we can look at it like a funnel... The TOP Level is where all the confusion and all the excessive information is found. Sublevel 1 - YOU What is my aspirational anchor? Meaning, your intent for the future and hunger for today. What is my unfair advantage? Do an audit on your team to determine strengths and figure out how to best utilize them. Sublevel 2 - YOUR AUDIENCE What is my first principle insight? Understanding your clients needs/wants and knowing what you can bring to the table to help them achieve those. Who are my true believers? These are the people (even if just a few) who are passionate about what you're doing. Find your super fans. Sublevel 3 - RESOURCES What are my constraints? Is it money, size, time? Understanding these constraints will help you innovate within them. How can I expand? Think big, but understand that you have to start small. Putting a lot of boxes on a field will still cover the field and can build something big The BOTTOM Point is where you find your CLARITY. Be the exception. By identifying and acknowledging your specific context you are in a category of ONE! Related: Creating content that speaks to an audience of one.

Cake Time (Red Hen Press) Daring yet aimless, smart but slightly strange, Cake Time’s young female protagonist keeps making slippery choices, sliding into the dangerous space where curiosity melds with fear and desires turn into dirty messes. In “How Not to Have an Abortion,” the teenaged narrator looks for a ride from the clinic between her AP exams. In “Easy Target,” the now-college-grad agrees to go to a swingers party with a handsome stranger. A decade later, in “Glow,” she is suddenly confronted by the disturbing and thrilling fact of her lover’s secret daughter. Ultimately, this unflinching novel-in-stories grapples with urgent, timeless questions: why intelligent girls make terrible choices, where to negotiate a private self in an increasingly public world, and how to love madly without losing a sense of self. Joining us will be Jim Ruland, Victoria Patterson, and Janice Lee. Victoria Patterson is the author of the novel The Little Brother, which Vanity Fair called “a brutal, deeply empathetic, and emotionally wrenching examination of American male privilege and rape culture.” She is also the author of the novels The Peerless Four and This Vacant Paradise, a 2011 New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice. Her story collection, Drift, was a finalist for the California Book Award and the Story Prize and was selected as one of the best books of 2009 by The San Francisco Chronicle. She lives in South Pasadena, California with her family and teaches at Antioch University.  Jim Ruland is the co-author of My Damage with Keith Morris, founding member of Black Flag, Circle Jerks and OFF! (Da Capo 2016) and Giving the Fingerwith Scott Campbell Jr. of Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch (Lyons Press 2014). He is also the author of the award-winning novel Forest of Fortune(Tyrus Books 2014) and the short story collection Big Lonesome (Gorsky Press 2005). Jim’s work has appeared in many publications, including The Believer, Esquire, Granta, Hobart, McSweeney’s, Mississippi Review, and Oxford American, and has received awards from Reader’s Digest and the National Endowment for the Arts. He runs the Southern California-based reading series Vermin on the Mount, now in its thirteenth year. Janice Lee is the author of KEROTAKIS (Dog Horn Press, 2010), Daughter (Jaded Ibis, 2011), Damnation (Penny-Ante Editions, 2013), Reconsolidation(Penny-Ante Editions, 2015), and The Sky Isn’t Blue (Civil Coping Mechanisms, 2016). She is Editor of the #RECURRENT Series for Civil Coping Mechanisms, Founder and Executive Editor of Entropy, Assistant Editor at Fanzine, Contributor at HTMLGIANT, Co-Editor (w/ Maggie Nelson) of SUBLEVEL, the new online literary magazine based in the CalArts MFA Writing Program and CEO/Founder of POTG Design. She can be found online at http://janicel.com. Praise for Cake Time  “Cake Time is a delicious indulgence. Treat yourself to its dark, seductive intimacies and savor the gritty sugar of its unsentimental humor.”—Jillian Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of Some Girls: My Life in a Harem, and Everything You Ever Wanted “Siel Ju writes with refreshing candor about sexual appetite and the treacherous difficulty of finding love. There is cruelty in the search and tenderness and a lot of honest fumbling around. Cake Time is our time—a provocative debut.”—Noy Holland, author of BIRD “Siel Ju’s Cake Time is sharply observed and wonderfully contemporary: these complex, flawed, and real characters live in our current world, with all its confusions and opportunity to connect—or disconnect. It’s about the perils and pleasures of intimacy, and its heroine feels as alive as you and I. A compelling and unflinching debut.”—Edan Lepucki, author of California “Siel Ju’s Cake Time is an astonishing debut. Ju’s novel-in-stories is unsettling and fierce and full of loneliness, sadness, and humor. Her voice is so alive, and her candor—particularly about men and sex—is keenly astute, intimate, and startling. The prose is precise and poetic, and Los Angeles vibrates on the page. Wry and heartfelt and uniquely defiant, Cake Time is like a hard slap I didn’t expect or see coming.”—Victoria Patterson, author of The Little Brother and Drift “Siel Ju’s stories are not boring because they are about not-boring things, like swingers’ parties and organic fashion company beauty pageants and high school sex and breakups and hook ups. Lots and lots of breakups and hook ups. I worried for Siel Ju reading about all these breakups and hook ups. Then I reminded myself these are fictions Siel Ju is telling us, and Siel Ju is fine. We are all fine, even after all these breakups and hook ups.”—Elizabeth Ellen, author of Fast Machine and Bridget Fonda Siel Ju's novel-in-stories, Cake Time, is the winner of the 2015 Red Hen Press Fiction Manuscript Award and will be published in April 2017. Siel is also the author of two poetry chapbooks. Her stories and poems appear in ZYZZYVA, The Missouri Review (Poem of the Week), The Los Angeles Review, Denver Quarterly, and other places. Born In Belarus, Sergei Loginov has started his DJ career when he barely turned 16 by playing records at the high school and then college. His early taste was highly influenced by bass heavy speed garage style along with early Chicago house that was played almost in every club at that time. In 2002 he moved permanently to the United States, taking some time off from spinning and adopting the new culture he's been exposed to. But true passion for the music didn't let him stay for too long off from the house scene. He started his first ever USA residency in 2003 in a small club called 'Stardust' in Atlantic City. After this "new" start Sergei has been holding down house, techno and tech house residencies across the USA, playing at some smaller and bigger venues and parties in New York, Atlantic City, Vail etc. His first residency in Denver Sergei Loginov started in the underground club "Sublevel 31" in 2008 where he held weekly residency. 2009 became a turning point for Sergei after he joined P.U.N.C.H.I.S. techno collective, founded with the intention of creating wholly unique, forward-thinking dance parties, and motivated by an obsession for the latest in cutting edge, underground electronic music sampled from around the world. Today him and the P.U.N.C.H.I.S DJ collective are weekly residents in the Beatport Lounge at Beta Nightclub. Under his former nick – Diizel – he’s seen a lot of action… To date, Sergei played with some very famous artists in the world's techno scene such as Martinez, Guy Gerber, Paco Osuna, Alex Celler, ONNO, Santé, Simon Baker, Luca Bacchetti, Martin Buttrich, Fur Coat, Nick Curly, Hipp-e, Nitin, Justin Sloe of DROOG, Michael Rosa, Mikael Stavostrand, Lorenzo Bartoletti, DJ Three, Yooj, Dela, Panos and Sentenza and with one of the Best local Djs/Producers such as Josh Manke, Danny Marin,Toni Rodelli, Oonaslim, Andre Orcutt and many more. Sergei's first production EP called "Let's Go Roasted" was signed by a very strong tech house label from Berlin called Waldliebe Familien. The EP got early support with the industry leaders such as Richie Hawtin, Luciano, Steve Lawler, Stacey Pullen and more. His 2nd EP was released in November on the Natural Rhythm label with the remixes by Alex Celler, Martinez and Horatio and getting again huge support with many big names. But this is only the beginning for Sergei, he is currently spending many hours in the studio and planning to release more tracks in the nearest future.
