Neile Simon is here to help us do that today.Neile Simon is a Certified Credit Counselor with Christian Credit Counselors (CCC), an underwriter of Faith & Finance.If you've ever wondered whether closing a credit card boosts your score or if credit counseling hurts your credit, you're not alone. Let's dive into these common misconceptions and separate fact from fiction.Myth #1: Paying Off Debt Instantly Improves Your Credit ScoreIt's a common belief that paying down debt will immediately result in a perfect credit score. However, credit improvement takes time because credit scores are based on your payment history.Reality: Your credit report gives lenders a snapshot of how responsibly you've managed debt over time. Consistently paying bills on time is the best way to build and maintain a strong score—but it won't happen overnight.Tip: Be cautious of anyone claiming they can “fix” your credit instantly. No legitimate company can erase negative (but accurate) information from your credit history overnight.Myth #2: Credit Counseling Destroys Your Credit ScoreMany people worry that seeking credit counseling will harm their credit score.Reality: Enrolling in a credit counseling program is a neutral mark on your credit report and does not directly affect your score.  PLANT DOCTOR     Germinating Native Seed Australian plants have evolved over thousands of years to respond to a variety of climatic extremes, from fires, to droughts to floods as well as being grazed by native animals.   Wattle seeds need boiling water treatment Such a long, long time  for plants to evolve as well as being isolated from the rest of the world has meant that a high diversity of flora abounds, so that it would be unusual to think that everything grows the same way. Australian plants have developed various  adaptations so that the seeds of which can grow in the most suitable environment for that species of plant to survive.  A suitable environment often means seeds don't germinate until a bushfire removes competing plants giving the seeds more access to sunlight and nutrients. Then they only have a short window to germinate.  The hard seed coat is therefore a protective layer that allows the seed to stay dormant for great lengths of time, even years before germination.   So how do plants keep germinating and what tricks have native seeds to keep them alive until conditions are right?   There are specific requirements for some seeds and in fact a wide range of native seeds require you, the gardener to break their dormancy before they germinate. Some are more difficult than others. So what are some of the treatments to break native seed dormancy? Boiling water or hot water treatment is recommended for hard-coated seeds such as Acacia (wattle)and Hardenbergia  species . This involves boiling some water and waiting for a minute so it's just off the boil,  then soaking the seeds for a few to eight hours. The time varies depending on the seed.   Smoke chemical treatment or smoke treatment to break the dormancy of native seeds. Wildflower seed starter granules or similar, are vermiculite or another bio material that contains the smoke chemicals from the burning of bush materials. The way you use it is to sprinkle some on top of the potting mix after sowing the seeds, and on the first watering, the smoke chemicals are released over the seeds.   You can also put some of these seed starter granules in the soaking water of the seeds in the hot water treatment method. Not all seeds need smoke chemical treatment, but there's a few that benefit from using it, in fact are difficult to germinate without it. Sturt Desert peas comes to mind, also Dianella, Philotheca, Xanthorrhoea, Actinotus, Callistemon and Banksia.   As a general rule, sowing and smoking should be done when you would expect the seeds to germinate in nature. Flannel flowers   Both these methods basically speeds up what often takes months or even years in nature to get seeds to germinate.   TIP: Be aware of the germination temperature that seeds need to germinate. But what other tricks are there? Steve talks about germinating Davidson plum seeds using the hot water treatment in the podcast.   So let's find out more. I'm talking with Steve McGrane, horticulturist and agriculturist. I hope that's given you some idea about perhaps why some of the native seeds are more difficult to germinate than regular seeds. But, here are just a few of my top secrets to shopping an estate sale well. 1. Find a website that works for you with tracking down estate sales in your area! I use EstateSales.Net, plug in my zip code, and see what's coming up in my area. Typically estate sales are posted in the middle or towards the end of the week for upcoming weekends. (Tip: Be sure to check through the photos they post too and see if anything catches your eye! You can normally tell pretty quickly if they have treasures that look like something you'd love.) 2. If you do see something that you absolutely have to have be sure to get there a minute or two early! Some estate sales have folks lining up at the door before they open at 9am- or something even 8am! 3. Be willing to get creative! Sometimes treasures come in the form of the $1.00 section in the garage. I especially love for vintage aluminum loaf pans. Today's guest is Eiji Morishita, Chief Movement Maker who is great at both. He shares strategies and best practices to start, grow and lead a movement. He considers it the absolute best marketing strategy for businesses looking to make an impact. How can you create a movement? A movement must come from an inspired place. It starts with a vision and needs to be greater than what you can do on your own. Others will want to help when they see how they can fit into the bigger plan. Tip: Follow the feeling. Fear will show up. Eiji shares that's when you know you have something to learn. Keep moving forward. Take action until you get a sign to stop. Inspired action is the beginning. Obstacles will arise. It's important to continue to move forward. When you take the next step solutions show up with a dose of support from the Universe. Eiji explains how this has worked for him in a project that went from giving out free hugs to building schools with recycled materials. The incredible impact that followed wasn't part of the original inspired plan. He shares how it was exactly the path required, in an unpredictable and unexpected way. Tip: Be fast, be fluid, be flexible. “It's in the adjustments that gets results.” Why is a movement such a great strategy? Morishita defines movement as: an active community that takes action. When a person in the community takes the values and vison as their own. 3 Trends that support a movement. The rise of activism. Get people motivated to take action. Conscious consumerism. People are voting with their dollars. The reputation economy matters. We trust each other more than advertisers. The three phases of growth: Ideation and monetization. Lead ourselves. This is where you find out what works. What will people pay for? Can you find investors or begin to build a community? Lead others. Once you know what works, build teams, and put systems in place. Lead leaders. Receive a return on your investment financially and/or create a ripple of impact. Movement makers without martyrdom is sustainable. In the past people with a mission often felt that it couldn't be profitable, or it had to come at the expense of family life. When you use the 3 phases, it's sustainable because it's profitable as well as making an impact. Find your first follower. It starts with a few people. Empower them to take the idea and spread it with you and beyond you. When you have a shared vision, collaboration allows ideas to spread. Who am I to start and/or lead a movement? Stacy and Tracy help listeners understand why some people struggle with food, eating and body image, especially during the Holidays.     Why do people experience chaos around food, especially during the Holidays? Internal Stressors = Thoughts that are distressing. 60% of the time, people are thinking: What did I eat? What will I eat? What do I look like? What do I weigh? External Stressors = Situations or events that happen in the world that are distressing Family togetherness when family members make negative comments Isolation from family or friends during the time of expected togetherness Financial concerns Busy Schedules, School and Work Returning home from college during the holidays and facing possible judgment Family comments about how your body has changed (appearance-related comments) COVID-19 and the impact of isolation on our body shape and size TIP: Be aware of / avoid any appearance-related comments (i.e. “You’ve got that COVID-19” or “You look great…you’ve lost weight”) TIP: Focus your comments on the person, and who they are (vs. what they look like) Food-Related Stressors: Family Comments about Food “I shouldn’t be eating this” or “Today is my cheat day” TIP: Enjoy the food and the company without excessive comments or pressure on yourself or others “What you’re eating doesn’t look very good” or “You can really put it away” TIP: Be mindful of your comments on someone else’s eating experiences “You need to eat more (or less)” TIP: Be supportive! When I sat down with professional counselor and coach Chelsey Brooke, I was impressed at her eloquence and expertise. She shared insights into the introverted mindsets and motivations that I believe can be the foundation for so many of us to become better, more mindful leaders. As Maya Angelou stated, “When you know better, you do better,” much of what Chelsey shared can be a call to action for leaders to really get to know their team members so that they can help dramatically increase their ability to cultivate mutually meaningful work engagements. In a business world where extraverts can often seize the spotlight – helping introverts learn to come from a place of power, work with their strengths, and find an authentic path they can be passionate about is exactly why I wanted to have her on the show. Misunderstanding and misinterpretation can be two big obstacles for introverts. From an extravert's point of view, not speaking up, sitting in silence, or not being gregarious in a meeting or office situation can be mislabeled as a poor team player or lackluster contributor. When in fact, more often than not, the exact opposite is true. Introverts tend to be extremely organized and take the time to process information with incredible thoroughness. Those are positives, not negatives. As leaders, know that there are three empowering ways we can help introverts let go of those labels (internally and externally), feel more confident in the workplace, and use their strengths to best serve the team as a whole. Chelsey calls them the three P's: Prepare: As deep-thinkers and planners, introverts tend to be uncomfortable with spontaneity. That's where preparation can be a powerful ally – especially for important meetings and projects. Tip: Make room in your timelines for the introvert's high level of preparedness and you'll most likely be rewarded with results that are well defined by critical thinking and thorough analysis. Participate: What's important to remember is how critical non-verbal communication is in the workplace. Introverts tend to participate most through eye-contact, attention, nods, smiles, and observation. Leaders who are more aware of the personality types of their employees recognize and reward this contribution as much so as the more verbal extravert's. Tip: Be aware that introverts often feel awkward about interrupting. Ask one-on-one ahead of a meeting if there is something they'd like to share up front, or something you can acknowledge for them. That kind of consideration will glean you the feedback you need at a comfort level that doesn't feel awkward or intimidating. Plan: For most introverts, constant engagement with other people is draining and distracting. Tip: Allow them to schedule energy-boosting breaks where they can recoup and recover. Another strategy is to suggest they have a posted schedule of their availability on their door or cubicle. That helps minimize work stress and helps team members stay on task for projects without distractions that can derail productivity. (Side note: I personally find this super-helpful regardless of personality type!) One of the things I really admire about Chelsey and a top reason I invited her to be a guest was her work and advocacy for introverted women. Her systems and solutions empower introverted women to not only excel in the workplace, but to truly create a life and career that is founded in their passion, fuels their confidence, and become their own best advocates. Ultimately, as leaders, regardless of industry – our job is to be an excellent steward of the people under our care and supervision. The more aware we are of not just their motivators, but their challenges as well, the more cohesive and effective team we can both build and sustain. Step one is to get rid of those pre-conceived notions, labels, and language. Some introverts go through life feeling like something is wrong with them, which is only exacerbated by what can feel like an endless barrage of, “you should speak up more”, “get out of your shell”, “you're too quiet” advice from (hopefully) well-meaning extraverts around them. Create a culture and environment in your organization that encourages empathy and advocacy over judgement and stereotypes. That kind of culture shift comes from the top. Lead by example. Step two is to encourage education. Perhaps surprisingly, many people have never even taken an assessment. They don't label themselves introvert or extravert. They just know what works for them – and what REALLY DOESN'T work for them. Encourage open discussion with your team members to share that kind of information with you and with fellow team members. Take some time, or even provide some training, so that people can ascertain their personal best ways to contribute successfully to the team so there's a win-win for everyone. Step three is to help people recognize their strengths. Truly, some of the traits that introverts tend to judge themselves the most about are really strengths in disguise. Scientifically, introverts don't make those snap decisions or reactions because they are hard-wired to use longer and more complex pathways in the brain to process information. Through encouragement and skilled communication, you can show them how much their organization, thoughtfulness, and attention are highly beneficial to your organization's success and applaud them for those strengths. Often, the traits most associated with leadership are extraverted in nature: gift of gab, super-connector, direct, assertive, big and bold personalities. Think about what introverts bring to the table however: kindness, quiet, understanding, and empathetic. In the world we live in, don't we really need BOTH? The answer is, of course we do. When leaders take the time to more fully understand who is on their team and what makes them tick, they can help amplify the strengths of the individuals, help them to be better heard, and cultivate the kind of team dynamics which allows everyone to thrive. A standout lesson from our conversation was really a simple one… ASK. Ask your team members (rather than assume) what conditions allow them to feel most productive. Ask them how they feel most comfortable communicating. Ask them about their passions so that you can help fuel them. Astonishing growth and collaboration can happen when you lead from a place of listening to your people. Both leaders and individuals can benefit greatly from actively learning more about what makes us say what we say and do what we do. Did you know that the brain is wired to keep us safe, keep to the status quo, and conserve energy? That's why growth is so uncomfortable for some! That's why setting and working towards new goals can feel painful. That's why we often quit before we even get started. That knowledge and perspective is a powerful tool in breaking through barriers and achieving great things. The top three take-aways for leaders from our time together: Help people find a career or a path they can be passionate about. Passion fuels energy, builds confidence, inspires action, and elevates lives personally and professionally. Help team members develop self-belief systems that serve them. The time to shatter those limited belief systems, habits, and “shoulda, coulda, wouldas” is now. Help people see that what once might have been considered weaknesses can truly be turned into strengths. Thinking differently, processing information more carefully, measuring your words – these are attributes, not faults. Help others develop a success mindset. Remind people that their self-talk, the skills they build upon, and the habits they make and break – these are all part of their personal success puzzle and also part of how they effectively fit into your team. I am so grateful to Chelsey for sharing her insights about the introvert mind, how we can empower them, and lead them with more effectiveness and compassion. Steve talks about the 4 competencies in coaching and the two football coaches that he looks up to Brian Hall and Dick Bates. He was born with some of that genetic potential and having really good mentors like Brian and Dick help smooth my progression through.   4 Competencies:   Emotional Intelligence. Look at great coaches. A lot of people would say that is one of their number one qualities. They can relate to people. They can engage with people, and they can inspire people. Organization. Logistical Skill. Managing Human and Physical Resources. Subject-specific Knowledge. Knowledge of football. Pedagogical skills. These skills to teach and communicate information to people so they can learn. The four competencies are pre-requisites. Whether you are coaching players or coaching coaches. If you haven’t got one of them, you are dead. We're all based on pattern and recognition. The human brain is designed to recognize patterns quickly and efficiently and to ignore irrelevant cues. The art of being really good at something is you can take something that's complicated and present it in very simple terms. The key factors in people's achievement are qualities of resilience and a growth mindset. Tip: Be ambitious but don't delude yourself. You got to do the groundwork. If you really want to be really good at something, chances are you probably have a little bit of natural talent, but you got to invest an awful amount of time and effort to make yourself as good as you can be. Best moments: “There's always been lots of people that I've known much more about football than me. And it's not necessarily their football knowledge that attracts me to them, it's what they're like as people.” “If you have a genetic predisposition for it, you might see 500 pictures and recognize it quickly. Somebody else can see 10,000 pictures and never see it ever. It will never make sense to them.” “I think what my brain learnt to do within football context is to see the important triggers quickly, forget all the fluff and that helps you come to a really quick decision about things rather than people who can't really see the triggers, and so they have to count with 6 or 7 solutions before they get anywhere near the one that's actually gonna work.” “Dick (Bate) had this brilliant way of doing things. His attention to detail... The man was an encyclopedia of football. And his passion was undimmed by the years. How to audition at a strip club, and what to expect. Step 1. Call the club you want to work at. Ask them 3 questions. “What is the best time and day to audition? “Are T-Backs allowed? Are their any dress code laws I should be aware of?” “What type of outfits to the girls there wear?" Step 2. Get your bag together… ID and Social Security card, make up, hair stuff, deodorant, hair stuff, tampon if you need one…. Leave your money and anything else that you don’t need at home. Step 3. Have your make up done before you get there. You don’t need to over do it. You can if you want, but to start, I’d say wear your make up like you would if you were going to a regular upscale-ish night club Step 4. Walk straight up to the bouncer, or door girl, and say “Hi, I’d like to audition” After they tell you which way to go, or call for a manager to come to the door….. ask them their name, and tell them yours. Be friendly. You could end up knowing them for a while, and it’s best to leave a good impression. Tip: Be friendly with everyone. It makes life easier when your co-workers want to see you… especially the ones like the door girl, manager, or bouncers… who can all hook you up in one way or another. So be friendly, ask them questions about themselves “So how long have you worked here for? Do you like it? What’s your name?” - Ask all the people that help you what their name is… and say it over and over in your head so that you remember it. Write it down when you get the chance. Step 5. They’ll point you in the right direction, and that will probably be to meet the manager, or to head to the dressing room. Step 6. Go to the dressing room, and get dressed. If the house mom is back there, also be friendly with her. Exchange names… Ask her if she has any advice. Step 7. It’s show time! Move slow and sexy. Unless the music is really fast. Try to move with the music. Tip: Make eye contact and smile with customers while on stage. Not shy break away eye contact… but 5 second or so hold eye contact. Step 8. Congratulations, you’re hired! Few things cause more confusion or frustration in digital marketing than search engine optimization (SEO). In the latest episode of the Legal Marketing 2.0 podcast, we clear up some of the confusion by identifying four techniques: Technical, On Page, Of Page, and Local, with some actionable takeaways. Show notes: Technical SEO – This is how the search engines crawl and index your website and blog. You have to think about SEO when you’re building your website. It’s not enough to make your site look pretty and functional, you need a good back-end or coding structure that the robots crawling your site can recognize and register. Other elements to consider are site speed and responsive design (mobile) to improve your ranking. Tip: Submit your site to Google Search Console, including your sitemap. This allows the search engines to index your website. You will get feedback on errors on your site. On-Page SEO – Are the pages on your website properly optimized for the keywords you’re trying to rank for? This can be a page or blog post. Tip 1: Do your keyword research. Keywords should be client-focused and have enough search volume. Tip 2: Make sure the keyword is in your title, the meta description (which appear in the search results below your title), and repeated a few times on the page. Tip 3: Make sure each page or blog post has at least 300 words and then write for as long as it takes to tell your story. Off Page SEO – This is the authority of your domain which can rank from 1-100. The higher the domain authority, the easier it is to rank for your keywords. Anywhere for 40 and up is good for a law firm website. How do you build your domain authority? By the number of sites that link to your website. Note that not every link is created equally. Tip: Be careful of black hat SEO tactics. Some agencies or vendors will promise to link from dubious sites, trying to trick the system. Even if it works for a short time, Google will catch on to you and your site could incur a severe penalty making it very difficult to be found in search. In other words, don’t try to game the system. Local SEO – This is important for finding firms or businesses within a specific geographic location. Where you’re located impacts Google search results. This is especially important if your practice is local rather than national. Though even for national firms, local SEO is important when people are searching for an office location nearby. Local SEO is all about citations: your firm’s name, address, and phone numbers. The more citations or listings you have, the stronger the signal to Google that you are located in the address you specify. Tip: Make sure your name, address, and phone number (NAP) is consistent across all online directories, of which there are around 70 Google looks at to confirm you NAP. Use yext.com to lock down your NAP so that they’re consistent across all directories.

Really good conversations. Keep your feed organized by using Twitter lists. It’s simply a curated group of accounts. Viewing a list will show you a stream of tweets only from the accounts on a list. You can set them up to be either public or private. They can help you monitor your competitors, connect with industry leaders, engage with employees, stay on top of trends and so much more.Click here to learn how to use lists. Tip: Be creative in naming your lists to make it more interesting and to grab people’s attention. Example: I have a list called “Social Media Smarties” rather than “Social Media.” Tip: List names cannot exceed 25 characters and they cannot begin with a number. Tip: To remove yourself from a list, you will need to block the creator of the list. Ross recommends using the Buffer Chrome extension. You’ll love it because it’s so easy to share links, pictures and video from anywhere on the web. Tweetables: “Do not be afraid to be personal and social on Twitter because it is called social media.” “People buy from people.” “It’s not a one-way street. You can’t expect everyone to contact you. You have to be proactive and tweet them.” “I like to keep my feed organized by using lists.” “I use public lists to organize people I follow into different categories or subjects. It helps me keep things focused and organized. Do software developers have stereotypes? Yes. Everyone has stereotypes. It is how we humans categorize things. We can’t PREVENT stereotypes, so use them to your advantage. We ALL stereotype, but can you let go of it when you see who people really are. John’s Tip: Be “smart” about your appearance for a job interview. You don’t want to be stereotyped negatively. Find the commonality and then break the stereotype. You can reinvent yourself whenever you want. Stop thinking you HAVE to be a certain way.
