Why AI, automation, and self-service only improve customer experience when they reduce effort without removing humanity. Summary n this episode of The Customer Service Revolution Podcast, Denise Thompson and John DiJulius challenge one of the biggest assumptions in business today: that modernizing service delivery automatically improves the customer experience. Companies are investing heavily in AI, automation, chatbots, self-service tools, and digital-first platforms. But customers are still frustrated, stuck in loops, repeating themselves, and fighting to reach a real person. The problem is not service innovation itself. The problem is bad customer service disguised as innovation. John explains how leaders should evaluate whether a new service model is actually better for the customer, not just faster or cheaper for the company. He discusses why high-stakes moments, complaint situations, financial concerns, health issues, and grudge-buy experiences still require human judgment, empathy, and service recovery skills. This conversation also explores why weak culture shows up through strong technology, why employees need transparency during AI transformation, and why companies must beta test new service tools before rolling them out broadly. The real future of customer experience will not belong to the companies that automate the most. It will belong to the companies that use innovation to make customers feel known, valued, heard, and helped. Takeaways Service innovation does not automatically create better service. A process can become faster and still feel worse to the customer. Customers are not rejecting technology. They are rejecting automation that feels like deflection, abandonment, or extra work. Efficiency and experience are not the same thing. A service model is only better if it is easier and more reassuring from the customer's point of view. High-stakes moments still require human judgment. Health, finance, complaints, service recovery, and emotionally charged situations should not be fully automated. Every company has a grudge-buy moment. Even pleasure-based businesses become grudge-buy businesses when something goes wrong. Technology exposes culture. If employees are fearful, undertrained, or disconnected, new tools will amplify those issues. AI transformation requires transparency. Employees need to know whether technology is designed to help them, replace them, or reshape their roles. Soft launches matter. Companies should crawl, walk, and run before rolling out new technology to the full customer base. The best service innovation helps both customers and employees. It removes friction, reduces repetitive work, and preserves the human option when it matters. The winner is not the fastest company. The winner is the company that gets the experience right. Quotes "Customers are not rejecting innovation. They are rejecting bad customer service disguised as innovation." "A faster service process can still create a terrible customer experience." "We can't only look at ease of business from our side." "The human option cannot go away when the issue is stressful, complicated, or emotional." "Every company has a grudge-buy component when a customer has a complaint." "The unknown is worse than the known. Employees need transparency around AI." "No employee likes to be caught off guard and become the punching bag for customer frustration." "The quickest company is not the winner. The company that gets there correctly is." You are not defined by the hardest thing you have been through, the worst decision you have made, or the darkest season of your life. After more than 33 years as a trauma-informed psychotherapist, Scott Stolarick has sat across from people carrying pain most of the world never sees. From psychiatric hospitals and county jails to private practice, Scott has worked with people who have experienced trauma, people who have caused trauma, and people who are trying to understand why their anxiety, depression, anger, or substance use keeps showing up in their lives. This conversation dives into what it really means to understand the whole person, not just the behaviour, diagnosis, or moment that brought them into the room. Scott shares why trauma is often part of the mental health equation, how depression and anxiety can change the way people experience life, and why compassion matters when we are trying to understand someone's story. He also talks about coping, substance use, social media, connection, skill building, and the importance of asking for help before the weight becomes too heavy to carry alone. Through his wisdom, experience, and deeply human approach, Scott reminds us that every person is made up of many pieces. And when you take a step back, you begin to see the whole picture. Guest Bio Scott is a licensed, trauma-informed psychotherapist with 33 years of experience practicing in the state of Illinois. Throughout his career, he has worked as a clinician, administrator, and clinical supervisor, supporting individuals through trauma, mental health challenges, substance use, and complex life experiences. He also holds Management and Leadership Certifications from the University of Notre Dame and Cornell University. Scott is currently the owner of Mosaic Pathway Counseling in Gurnee, Illinois, where he brings a compassionate, whole-person approach to helping people understand their story, build healthier coping skills, and move toward healing. You'll hear About Why trauma is often part of the mental health equation How depression, anxiety, anger, and substance use can connect to deeper pain Why understanding the whole person matters more than judging one behaviour How self-medication can become a warning sign when it is used to cope Why skill building is an important part of managing mental health How social media and technology can quietly affect connection and wellbeing Chapters 00:00 Welcome and Episode Introduction 02:30 Scott's Career in Trauma-Informed Therapy 04:45 Why Trauma Matters in Mental Health 09:00 Why Hurt People May Hurt Others or Themselves 11:15 Seeing the Human Behind the Behaviour 14:30 Trauma, Social Media, and a More Stressed World 17:30 How Trauma Connects to Mental Health 20:30 Understanding Depression and Anxiety 24:30 Medication, Self-Medication, and Coping 29:45 When Substance Use Becomes a Warning Sign 31:30 Building Healthier Coping Skills 34:00 Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Health 37:30 Social Media, AI, and Disconnection 40:30 Learning to Relax Without a Screen 45:45 Reaching Out for Help 48:15 Scott's Message for Anyone Struggling 49:45 Final Reflections and Key Takeaways Chuck's Challenge This week, take one step back before you judge someone else's story — or your own. Look beyond the behaviour. Look beyond the one mistake, the one hard season, or the one piece that seems easiest to focus on. Ask yourself what else might be part of the picture. And if you are the one struggling, remember this: you are not weak for needing help. You are human. Because as Scott shared, we are all mosaics. Europe's Migration Crisis has reached a breaking point, and the Belfast riots exposed a reality that political leaders can no longer ignore. As governments blame social media, misinformation, and public frustration, millions of citizens across Europe are asking a different question: What happens when governments stop listening to their own people? The attempted decapitation attack in Belfast serves as the catalyst for a much larger conversation about mass migration, immigration policy, assimilation, national identity, censorship, and the growing divide between European governments and the people they govern. This episode examines why trust in institutions continues to collapse, why anti-establishment parties continue to surge, and why many citizens believe political leaders spent years ignoring obvious warning signs while dismissing legitimate concerns as racism, extremism, or misinformation. What You'll Learn In This Episode: Why the Belfast riots represent a broader European backlash against mass migration policies How assimilation failures and parallel societies fuel growing social and political tensions Why many Europeans believe governments police speech more aggressively than they protect public safety How political elites use misinformation narratives, censorship, and social pressure to control public debate Why the crisis unfolding across Europe serves as a warning for the United States and other Western nations From the Henry Nowak case to the response of Northern Ireland's political leadership, this episode connects the dots between immigration policy, cultural cohesion, government legitimacy, and the dangerous consequences that emerge when leaders stop listening to the people they represent. Topics covered: Europe's Migration Crisis, Belfast Riots, Michelle O'Neill, Henry Nowak, Northern Ireland, Mass Migration, Immigration Policy, Assimilation Failures, No-Go Zones, Parallel Societies, Free Speech Censorship, Social Media, Administrative State, Government Legitimacy, Western Civilization.
Larry McCall has been married to his high school sweetheart for more than 50 years and pastored the same church for over 40. He knows firsthand what it takes to enjoy a marriage that lasts. He's also seen the bad things that happen to marriages in the middle and later years. In his book A Seasoned Marriage, he walks couples through the seasons that can quietly undo a marriage: empty nests, adult kids moving back home, aging parents, and the slow drift from spouse to roommate. He and Arlene talk about why putting Christ at the center of marriage matters more than ever as the years go on, and how couples can become closer friends instead of growing apart. What does it mean to truly know yourself — not perform yourself, not brand yourself for public approval, but honestly know who you are at your core?JP Nerbun, Betsy Butterick, and Nate Sanderson explore that question in this roundtable, the first in a four-part series on JP's new book, The Culture Captain. Betsy shares the story of an athlete and what she filled in her personal definition led to an eye-opening statement about being "enough". This quiet act of self-definition opens a deeper conversation about identity, enoughness, and what it costs to resist the pressure to brand yourself for the world's approval. Nate brings a hard-won insight from a facilitation with student-athletes that challenges a core assumption most coaches hold about leadership readiness. JP is honest about the gap between success and fulfillment — and about the dark side of purpose itself, how even meaningful work can become obligation when fulfillment is measured in external terms. Betsy's Championship Soup exercise from a workshop at Stanford with Tara Vanderbeer gives every coach a practical way in. This is the beginning of a longer conversation — one level at a time.If the question "who are you?" has ever felt harder to answer than it should, this one is for you.Chapters(00:00) Intro(01:35) The Culture Captain Series Format(03:12) When Were You Invited to Know Yourself?(09:09) The "Child of God" Athlete and Enoughness(11:26) Do Athletes Know What Leadership Is?(12:27) Nate's Facilitation: What Athletes Revealed(16:06) Defining Leadership — No Clean Answer(20:01) Leadership as Wielded Influence(22:08) The Magnetic Personality Story(28:53) Leadership Is a Boat Anyone Can Board(30:58) Core Values — How Did You Find Yours?(35:23) The Soup Supper Exercise(37:15) Championship Soup at Stanford(40:43) Success Without Fulfillment(41:51) Division I Basketball vs. 200km Ultra(45:30) Identity Prison vs. Identity House(46:18) JP's Vulnerable Moment on FulfillmentTOC 3-2-13 Quotes | 2 Questions | 1 ResourceYour fast-track to the episode's most actionable ideas."Fulfillment has to be defined by you, and the meaning has to be made intentionally rather than just by what we see and what we hear."— Nate Sanderson"When I'm at my best, when I feel most at peace, when I feel most content, when I feel most truly myself — look back at those moments. The National Strategy for Countering Domestic Terrorism has been rewritten and the domestic terror strategy has changed, but has the real problem actually been solved? Nearly five years after the Biden administration transformed domestic surveillance, the Trump administration narrowed the counterterrorism focus back toward violence and criminal conduct. This episode of The P.A.S. Report Podcast examines the Trump administration's revisions to the domestic terror framework, the constitutional dangers of the previous guidelines, and why the permanent bureaucracy remains one of the greatest threats to American liberty. While the revised strategy strips away vague ideological metrics like "anti-government" and "anti-authority" sentiment, the administrative machinery that enabled recent government abuses remains fully intact. From intelligence-sharing fusion centers to public-private censorship pipelines and sweeping surveillance authorities, the underlying weaponization infrastructure is merely waiting for the next administration. What You'll Learn In This Episode: The Original Sin: How the 2021 Domestic Terror Strategy shifted the threshold away from criminal conduct and toward ideological "sentiment." The Overhaul: Why the Trump administration's policy pivot represents a necessary constitutional correction. The NSPM-7 Paradox: What National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 does, and how it could be turned against citizens again. The Surveillance Pattern: How the Patriot Act, Total Information Awareness, and PRISM reveal 25 years of expanding bureaucratic power. The Congressional Failure: Why Congress keeps passing clean FISA reauthorizations while abdicating real oversight. Five years later, the debate is no longer about one president or one party. It is about whether a constitutional republic can survive a weaponized bureaucracy that treats political dissent, free speech, and ideological disagreement as predictive threat indicators.

In Episode 346 of The Business Development Podcast, Kelly Kennedy sits down with Rudy A. Zacharias and Terry Elkins of About That... to explore one of the most misunderstood topics in business: branding. Drawing on decades of experience helping organizations navigate growth and transformation, Rudy and Terry explain why a brand is far more than a logo. It is the sum total of what people think, feel, and experience when they interact with your company. Together, they unpack the warning signs that your business may have outgrown its brand, the importance of aligning perception with reality, and why successful companies often reach a point where evolution becomes necessary. The conversation also provides a behind-the-scenes look at About That...'s own transformation from G Squared to its new identity. Rudy and Terry share the intentional process behind the rebrand, the challenges of balancing existing brand equity with future growth, and the critical role of employee buy-in, change management, and communication throughout the journey. Whether you're considering a full rebrand, a brand refresh, or simply want to better understand how your organization is perceived, this episode offers practical insights into building a brand that reflects who you are today and where you want to go tomorrow.Key Takeaways: A brand is not your logo. Your brand is the sum total of what people think, feel, and experience when they interact with your company. The biggest reason companies rebrand is misalignment. When who you are as a business no longer matches how you are perceived in the market, a rebrand may be necessary.Growth often creates branding challenges. As companies evolve, expand into new markets, add services, or change leadership, their original brand may no longer accurately represent them.Living things grow and living things evolve. Businesses that remain exactly the same year after year risk becoming stagnant and losing relevance.Rebranding should never start with design. Before changing logos, websites, or visual identity, organizations must first understand their values, purpose, positioning, and stakeholder perceptions.Internal alignment comes before external messaging. Employees must understand and believe in the brand before the marketplace ever sees it. Your team becomes your most important group of brand ambassadors. The truth about your brand is often found through listening. Leadership's perception of the company can be very different from what employees, customers, vendors, and partners actually experience.A rebrand is not always the answer. Sometimes a refresh, updated messaging, service clarification, culture improvements, or operational changes can solve the real issue without a complete overhaul.Successful rebrands require change management and communication. If stakeholders do not understand why a change is happening, they will create their own narratives and assumptions.Values must be lived, not displayed. Trust is built when customers and employees can clearly see an organization's values reflected in its actions, decisions, and relationships every day.Connect with Rudy A. Zacharias & Terry Elkins
In the finale of Unchosen, the story takes a disturbing turn as manipulation, control, and blind trust collide in ways that felt all too familiar to us.As former members of high-control religious groups, we break down the warning signs that were present from the beginning, how charismatic individuals gain influence, and why closed communities can become vulnerable to manipulation. Throughout this reaction, we compare the events of Unchosen to our own experiences growing up in Mormonism and the FLDS, exploring the psychology behind obedience, authority, and belief. What starts as a search for belonging and purpose gradually reveals deeper questions about power, trust, and the dangers of unquestioned leadership.Did you see the warning signs before the ending? Let us know in the comments.
Some financial decisions come with clear answers. Others require balancing risks, opportunities, and a healthy dose of uncertainty. In our episode “May 30, 2026: Mortgages, Money Transfers & Monetary Policy,” we explore three areas where the right decision depends as much on context as it does on the numbers — from adjustable-rate mortgages and wealth transfers to the Federal Reserve's ongoing fight against inflation.Adjustable-rate mortgages are making a comeback, but this isn't a repeat of the housing bubble era. With special guest Shanna Squires from Henssler Mortgage Advisors, we break down how today's ARMs differ from the products that helped fuel the financial crisis, why some homebuyers are turning to them in a world of elevated mortgage rates, and whether they represent a smart strategy or a risky gamble on lower rates ahead.Next, we tackle a listener question about inheriting and gifting money. From estate taxes and inheritance taxes to annual gift exclusions and lifetime exemptions, we'll explain what the rules actually are—and just as importantly, what they aren't. If you've ever wondered how families can pass wealth to the next generation without creating unnecessary tax headaches, this conversation is for you. Finally, we examine a question many investors are asking: What happens when inflation is driven by supply shortages rather than consumer demand? With oil prices and geopolitical tensions once again influencing inflation expectations, we discuss the limits of Federal Reserve policy, why interest rates remain the Fed's primary tool, and the difficult tradeoffs policymakers face when fighting inflation that may be originating far outside their control.Join hosts Nick Antonucci, CVA, CEPA, Director of Research, and Managing Associates K.C.
