Give to help Chris continue making Truce I made these episodes a few years ago, but since it is the 100th anniversary of the Scopes "Monkey" trial, I thought we should revisit them! Tennessee was the first state in the United States to crack down hard on the teaching of evolution in public schools. Others had dabbled, but Tennessee went all the way. The ACLU wanted to challenge the validity of the case in the courts. In order to do that they needed an educator to teach it, get busted, and be brought to trial. At the same time, the town of Dayton, TN, needed a boost. After the biggest employer closed down, it faced serious economic trouble. What if the men of Dayon could manufacture a court case to draw the attention of the nation? They found a young teacher named John Scopes and convinced him to participate in their scheme. They booked Scopes, even though he probably never taught evolution. The ACLU had its case. Soon, William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow hopped on board, and it went from a publicity stunt to something for the history books. This is the event that some historians (wrongly) point to as the death of Christian fundamentalism in the United States until it was revived by the Moral Majority. One man fighting for the biblical idea of creation and another for godless atheism. But the real history is far more complex. Ever wondered how to talk to your children about loss in a way that's both gentle and meaningful? In this powerful episode of Reading with Your Kids, author Hannah van Campen shares her incredible journey of creating "Believe," a children's picture book that tackles grief in the most beautiful way possible. Inspired by her personal experience of losing her father, Hannah crafted a touching story about a child and a caterpillar that transforms into a butterfly. The book isn't just a story—it's a tool for healing, complete with journaling pages that encourage families to preserve precious memories. What makes this conversation so special is how it challenges the traditional, hushed approach to discussing loss. Hannah and host Jed Doherty agree that children are far more resilient and understanding than we often give them credit for. They're not fragile; they're curious and capable of processing complex emotions when we approach them with honesty and compassion. The book's magic lies in its metaphor: just because someone changes form doesn't mean they're gone. It's a powerful message that can help kids understand loss across various situations—whether it's a loved one's passing, a friend moving away, or even saying goodbye to a beloved pet. Parents, take note: this isn't about shielding kids from grief, but walking through it together. The book provides a gentle, accessible way to have those tough conversations, turning a potentially painful experience into an opportunity for connection and healing. Hannah's approach is simple yet profound: remember the love, cherish the memories, and understand that those we love are always with us, just in a different way. "Believe" isn't just a book—it's a compassionate guide for families navigating the complex landscape of loss. We also welcome back author Fahad Siddiqui from Young Trees Education. Fahad shares his innovative approach to transforming education through AI-powered lesson plan generators. Focusing on developing critical skills like creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking, Fahad aims to make learning more engaging and dynamic for students, moving beyond traditional rote memorization methods. Fahad also discusses his educational book series, including Mission Upcycle, which encourages children to be creative with recycled materials, and the Our Story series, which highlights lesser-known historical figures like Razia Sultana. His ultimate goal is to empower children, provide them with tools for future success, and inspire a more thoughtful, sustainable approach to learning and living. Jed noticed something about his friends and how they are all getting homes and moving on with their lives... but will he ever experience having the same things as his parents?
Parents are faced with a two sided coin. Leaning too far one way or the other can have a detrimental impact on our children. One side of the coin is the need to protect the innocence of our children. The other side of the coin bears the obvious need to train our youth so that they are prepared for the real world ahead. For many parents, these waters can be hard to navigate. Allow today's episode, a plea from the parents of the Proverbs 7 young man, to aid you in finding that right line today!
One of the biggest complaints against Montgomery County Public Schools, the largest school district in Maryland and 17th nationwide, is communication style. When Superintendent Thomas Taylor took office in 2024 set a new tone with a funny snow day video, but as the school district seeks a major overhaul of school attendance boundaries, the school district is losing control over its strategy and communications. Sunil Dasgupta talks to Michael Ricci, a MCPS parent and former communications director for Governor Larry Hogan and US House Speakers Paul Ryan and John Boehner, about MCPS' inscrutable style and how to fix the problem. Boomer and Gio discuss weather, sports media news (Dave Portnoy/FOX Sports rumor, Sal Licata's joke about Craig Carton returning to WFAN). They debate acceptable criticism of referees, prompted by Brandon Tierney's alleged ejection, with callers mostly siding with umpires. Jerry's update covers his elbow injury while golfing and tips for sweaty hands/swamp ass. Shane Gillas' jokes about Juan Soto, Maxx Crosby, and Aaron Rodgers are played, along with talk of snakes on the golf course. A caller from the BT game confirms Tierney's warranted ejection, providing details.
Brandon Tierney's alleged ejection from a game leads to a conversation about how much criticism of referees or umpires is too much? We take a bunch of calls and most of them side with umpires tossing out parents who take things too far.

Get ready for a wild ride with "Princess Battle Royale" - the most hilarious and action-packed children's book you'll want to read this summer! Author Phaea Crede & Illustrator Jen Hill join host Jed Doherty to discuss their uproarious new picture book that mashes up fairy tale princesses with professional wrestling. Imagine Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and Rapunzel throwing down in a wrestling ring - that's exactly what this creative duo has cooked up. The book features a cast of classic and lesser-known princesses battling it out, with the Swan Princess serving as the ultimate villain. Little Red Riding Hood even gets her moment to shine as the towel girl! The inspiration came from Phaea playing with her daughter and creating wrestling moves with princess dolls. She dove deep into professional wrestling, particularly All Elite Wrestling (AEW), to capture the perfect blend of athleticism and storytelling. Jen Hill brought the concept to life with incredibly detailed illustrations packed with hidden fairy tale characters that kids will love discovering. What makes this book special is how it empowers classic princess characters, turning them from damsels in distress into powerful athletes. It's a hilarious way to show kids that princesses can be strong, funny, and totally unexpected. The book also subtly teaches important lessons about not underestimating yourself or others. Parents and kids will love exploring the wild illustrations together, finding new details with each read. The book promises laugh-out-loud moments and plenty of opportunities for imaginative play. Who knows? Your kids might start creating their own wrestling princess characters after reading! "Princess Battle Royale" hits bookstores on August 19th and is perfect for families looking for a unique, energetic, and utterly ridiculous storytime experience. Get ready to body slam boring princess stories and embrace the most entertaining children's book of the year! We also chat with Leslea Wahl who is celebrating her new middle-grade novel "A Summer to Treasure," a heartwarming story about a family road trip through the southwestern United States. The book follows three teens, their parents, and grandmother on a journey that explores family relationships, faith, and personal discovery. Inspired by her own family travels, Wahl weaves in elements of Catholic faith and intergenerational understanding, creating opportunities for meaningful conversations about family history, belief, and personal growth. Set against the backdrop of stunning national parks like the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon, the novel delves into themes of technology's impact on family connections and the importance of sharing untold family stories, all while offering a fun and engaging narrative that encourages readers to look beyond surface-level relationships and appreciate the depth of family bonds. For many families, a food allergy diagnosis doesn't just change what's on the menu, it changes how they live. Suddenly, everyday moments like playdates, birthday parties, family vacations, or a simple trip to a restaurant feel like navigating a minefield. Parents become hyper-vigilant, kids feel isolated, and the fear of accidental exposure looms large, casting a shadow over milestones that should be joyful. But what if much of this suffering is preventable? What if the way we introduce food in infancy could reduce not just allergic reactions, but the emotional burden they carry? In this episode, I'm joined once again by Canadian board-certified Pediatric and Adult Allergist/Immunologist Dr. Stuart Carr. With over 3 decades of experience, Dr. Carr is the Chief Medical Officer at Snö Asthma & Allergy in Abu Dhabi. Today, Dr. Carr unpacks the mental health impact of food allergies and reveals how early allergen introduction and oral immunotherapy are reshaping the way we treat and prevent allergies. Things You'll Learn In This Episode -Why “just avoid the allergen” is outdated and harmfulAvoidance doesn't just limit diet, it can hardwire fear and worsen immune reactivity. How are avoidance-based strategies doing more harm than good? -The critical mistake parents make after introducing allergensTrying peanut butter once and checking it off the list isn't enough. What frequency and dose prevents allergies from developing? -Reasonable respect vs. unreasonable fearAllergies aren't just a physical issue, they also affect the mental health and quality of life of children and their families. What stresses do allergies cause in families? How does early introduction alleviate these stresses? Guest Bio Dr. Stuart Carr is a Canadian board-certified Pediatric and Adult Allergist/Immunologist with over three decades of experience. He's been Chief Medical Officer at Snö Asthma & Allergy in Abu Dhabi since January 2019, following 20 years in academic clinical allergy practice in Edmonton, Canada, where he was an Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Alberta. A Past-President of the Canadian Society of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, and a reviewer for their journal, Dr. Carr's primary interests include pediatric asthma, food allergy, and eosinophilic esophagitis. He's currently collaborating on a Canada-wide study examining the safety and effectiveness of oral immunotherapy for peanut and other food allergies in preschool children. If you're feeling like your family could use a break from screens and a reset, this is the episode for you. You may remember a podcast I recorded last year about how to do a digital detox. Well, that episode was based on an amazing book called Digital Detox: The Two-Week Tech Reset for Kids, and I am so thankful to have the author, Molly DeFrank, here with me today. You'll Learn:Why letting go of control can actually help you find solutionsOur real-life experiences with digital detoxes in our own familiesHow to help kids manage their boredom and big feelings without screensThe 4-step method to a digital detoxMolly normalizes tech overuse (it's not just you!) and lays out a simple, accessible way for you to give your kid a break from digital input, reset their nervous system, and allow your family to become a bit more whole and integrated. You'll love our conversation and hearing Molly's perspective.------------------------------------------Molly DeFrank is a mom to six children, ages 8 to 15, and the author of two parenting books, including Digital Detox: The Two-Week Tech Reset for Kids. She lives in California and has helped thousands of families break free from digital dependence. The State of Screen UseI often think of the pandemic as “letting the cat out of the bag” when it comes to screens. Even for slow tech families, school was online and our kids were spending way more time on screens. So now, 5 years later, our kids are struggling and we're seeing a lot of families doing some course correction.Molly shared that the vast majority of parents say that their kids' screen use is their biggest parenting struggle and that “8 to 12 year-old kids are spending 40 hours per week on digital entertainment…13 to 18 year-olds are spending 50 hours a week. Our kids are spending the same amount of time as having a full time job being digitally entertained.”Molly was heavily influenced by Dr. Victoria Dunckley, who coined a new condition called Electronic Screen Syndrome that is brought on by too much digital entertainment. It can disguise itself as ADHD, bipolar disorder, or OCD, when it's really just the adrenaline, cortisol, and dopamine that is hijacking their brains. She saw so much of this that she decided to no longer diagnose a new client until they had undergone a digital detox. And most of the time, symptoms were resolved and medication was not needed. That's how powerful this is. Some of these symptoms that come with screen overuse include irritability, aggression, low frustration tolerance, problems sleeping, and inattentiveness.Parents know that something needs to change, but they don't want to deal with the fallout and tantrums of reducing or taking away screens. I know you've experienced this. The timer goes off, and the monster comes out. The negotiations (just 5 more minutes, pleeeease) and big feelings begin. This is purely dysregulation from the transition from stimulation from that device to non stimulation. I call this the boredom gap, and believe it or not, there is so much hope and freedom on the other side. Benefits of a Digital DetoxMolly wants us to know that a detox doesn't mean you're signing up for 2 weeks (or forever) of screen tantrums. In fact, it's quite the opposite. She says, “You're actually getting your kids back.” A detox comes with benefits to your child's creativity, mental health, social life, and academics, as well as your relationship with them. In fact, every parent she knows who has...

Send us a textTurning fifty isn't just about crossing an age threshold—it's about recognizing the human connections that build resilience throughout a lifetime. In this deeply personal episode, therapist Steve Bisson reflects on the relationships that have shaped his capacity for strength, growth, and recovery across five decades.Steve begins by honoring his parents, whose contrasting yet complementary influences established his foundation. His father, who lacked a paternal role model yet became an exceptional dad himself, taught Steve about honesty and critical thinking. His mother—a glass-ceiling breaker before the term existed—demonstrated determination through her 47-year career and instilled feminist principles that continue to guide Steve's professional approach. Together, they exemplified loyalty, work ethic, and perseverance that became cornerstones of his resilience framework. The episode takes listeners through Steve's "Three Musketeers" friendship with Joce and Frank—a bond spanning 38 years that has weathered countless challenges. Through emotional storytelling, Steve reveals how these lifelong connections, along with other key friendships, professional relationships, and even his therapy clients, have collectively taught him different aspects of resilience. Perhaps most touching is his tribute to his teenage daughters, who continue to teach him patience, emotional expression, and growth even as they navigate their own challenges.Steve's resilience journey illuminates how our capacity to overcome obstacles isn't built in isolation but through meaningful connections that sustain us. Whether you're approaching a milestone birthday, reflecting on your support network, or simply curious about the human factors behind emotional strength, this episode offers valuable insights into how relationships shape our ability to navigate life's inevitable challenges. Why are the conversations parents care about most the ones they're told they can't have? In this powerful and eye-opening episode, board-certified pediatrician Dr. Joel “Gator” Warsh returns to The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast to unpack one of the most taboo topics in modern parenting: vaccines. With decades of experience, a master's in epidemiology, and a thriving integrative practice, Dr. Warsh lays out a clear, respectful, and research-driven case for why parents deserve full transparency and freedom to ask questions—without being shamed, silenced, or dismissed. His new book, Between a Shot and a Hard Place, is an honest reckoning with what we do and don't know about the current vaccine schedule—and why that matters more than ever in an age of chronic illness and declining trust in the medical system. Ginny Yurich and Dr. Warsh navigate this sensitive terrain with balance and clarity, addressing placebo studies, long-term data gaps, liability loopholes, and the realities families face when trying to make informed choices. This episode doesn't tell you what to think—it simply invites you into the conversation most parents are already having behind closed doors. Share this one widely. It's not anti-anything. It's pro-discussion.
Think about the deep neurobiological connection happening in your brain as you walk into a room and encounter someone who lights up at your presence, and the fulfilling sensation of knowing that person is beaming from the inside out with only one message, “I am so glad to be with YOU!” Without relational joy, there is no relational intelligence. Instead, relational joy is the antidote to the numbing out of our hurried lives because you walk around with a sense of knowing you are seen and loved. As we continue season 5 on relational intelligence, Josh provides what he calls the “JOY STARTS framework”—four principles and corresponding practices spelling the word JOYS to jumpstart relational joy in your life and in the lives of those around you. What do you do when your child refuses to eat? When food, health, and body image turn into a dangerous battleground? In this deeply moving episode, Justin and Kylie unpack the devastating reality of eating disorders — with insights from a brave young woman who overcame anorexia, her incredible family, and a specialist psychologist who shares life-saving advice for parents. KEY POINTS 90% of teens have negative thoughts about their bodies; eating disorders affect far too many young people, especially girls. Social media and “diet culture” fuel body dissatisfaction, validation-seeking, and dangerous habits. Even the most loving parents can have children who perceive themselves as unlovable — perception is reality for struggling kids. Parents play a vital role: showing up consistently and lovingly is powerful even when it feels unnoticed. Warning signs to watch for include: Loose, baggy clothing (to hide weight loss or from skin sensitivity) Avoiding family meals, picking at food, or excessive “health consciousness” Withdrawing socially, prioritizing exercise obsessively Personality changes, irritability, especially around meals Parents need extraordinary patience, kindness, and firmness — staying at the table for hours if necessary, showing the eating disorder who’s stronger. Separate “the eating disorder voice” from your child’s real self in your interactions. It’s less about finding the “cause” and more about focusing on healing. The Butterfly Foundation (butterfly.org.au) is an excellent resource for specialist help. QUOTE OF EPISODE #1299 "You need to show that eating disorder that you're stronger than it, more patient than it, and you will sit there as long as it takes — because your child is worth fighting for." — Christine Gregory RESOURCES MENTIONED The Butterfly Foundation — national support for eating disorders Parental Guidance episode (stream on 9Now) Happy Families articles and resources on connection and body image (happyfamilies.com.au) ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS 1. Watch for early warning signs and trust your instincts — you know your child best.2. Be patient, kind, and firm — sit with your child at meals and don’t let the eating disorder win.3. Separate your child’s identity from the illness; speak to your child, not to the disorder.4. Don’t obsess over what “caused” it — focus on healing and connection.5. Seek professional help early through organizations like the Butterfly Foundation.6. In this special July episode of Born in June, Raised in April: What Adoption Can Teach the World, we explore the beauty and complexity of belonging—and the deep yearning for the freedom to be fully ourselves. I'm joined by my dear friend and creative collaborator Johnny Wright as we share space and vision around a new offering we're bringing into the world—one created especially with Black and Brown youth in mind, particularly those growing up in White families and communities. This conversation is about more than programs or plans—it's about culture, care, and connection. It's about hair and history, family and identity, and the ways we can braid love, legacy, and liberation into how we show up for ourselves and for one another. As we prepare to introduce this work in community for the first time, we hope you'll join us in dreaming of a world where everyone has the freedom to belong—and to be.
