11km: https://www.ardaudiothek.de/episode/11km-der-tagesschau-podcast/america-first-was-donald-trumps-wirtschaftsplaene-fuer-deutschland-bedeuten/tagesschau/13815911/ PlusMinus: https://1.ard.de/plusminus-podcast-USWahl

In this episode, we encounter the show's very first featured geographer.  UK-born Doreen Massey was a pioneer in her field. She challenged existing ideas about space, place and power, was compassionate, politically active, and hopeful.   She worked in academia and as a public intellectual, including at British early-morning TV fans' beloved Open University – teaching students who didn't have access to a traditional university education – and also in Nicaragua, Venezuela and South Africa. That work focused on economic geography and the geography of gender, and she spoke eloquently about place or space as “a pincushion of a million stories”. Her list of publications vies in length with her honors and awards – including a pretty impressive total of six honorary degrees.  Our talk is presented by Agata Lisiak, a professor of Migration Studies at Bard College Berlin, and a DLS regular, who has previously talked about Marie Curie and Rosa Luxemburg.  DLS co-founder Katy Derbyshire joins producer/host Susan Stone to introduce the episode, and talk a bit about the Open University, an important place for Doreen Massey and many others.  You can find Agata's podcast series on Doreen Massey, Spatial Delight, where ever you like to listen, and also here, where there are additional features: https://thesociologicalreview.org/podcasts/spatial-delight/ Photos and clips of Massey can also be found on our podcast episode page here:  https://deadladiesshow.com/2023/08/17/podcast-66-doreen-massey To get tickets for our upcoming PodFest Berlin event in October just click here: https://www.podfestberlin.com/event-details/dead-ladies-show-Oct2023-special Sign up for the Dead Ladies Show newsletter here: https://tinyletter.com/deadladiesshow  and find us on social media @deadladiesshow and @deadladiesshow.bsky.social For DLS NYC info and tickets, sign up to their newsletter here: https://tinyletter.com/DeadLadiesShowNYC or follow them on Instagram @deadladiesnyc Our theme music is “Little Lily Swing” by Tri-Tachyon https://freemusicarchive.org/music/Tri-Tachyon/the-kleptotonic-ep/little-lily-swing Find our Patreon page here:  www.patreon.com/deadladiesshowpodcast The TeePublic shop for DLS logo treats is here: https://www.teepublic.com/user/dead-ladies-show Thanks for listening! In this episode I speak with Titus Techera about Dune, Bladerunner, science fiction, dystopian film, technocratic view of humanity, and the formative power of science fiction on the imagination. We discuss contemporary technological society, social breakdown, loneliness, men and women and decline in marriage, technology and trans-humanism/ transgenderism, and the predictive power of dystopian film. We talk about what it means to be human and the relationship between digital technology and humanity. Titus argues that much of sport, military, modern manliness and excellence has been reduced to science and creatures of technology. He argues that one of the “catalysts for science fiction stories is disappointment with the world. The dead hand of the past is too powerful. People are always a problem; tradition gets in the way of radical innovation. Science fiction is aware of the problem of our decadence, but technical daring can solve it.” And yet in the science fiction societies like Bladerunner there is a wealthy technical class amidst brutality, societal decline where everyone has lost their humanity. He writes As with all science fiction set in the near future, Blade Runner is an attempt to make us look at ourselves as though we were strangers to ourselves, allowing for the possibility that serious changes can come suddenly and overcome our beliefs or preferences. Could we end up like Deckard, Harrison Ford's character, a bounty hunter, or “blade runner?” We need not embrace this kind of despair, but only need understand its appeal. The social landscape of Blade Runner seems plausible enough. The film presents American cities overrun by crime and poverty while technological corporations become immensely wealthy… A suitably dramatic expression of something we see around us quite often; indeed, perhaps exaggeration is necessary, since we have an excusable, but unfortunate tendency to ignore the misery of American cities. Themes we discuss include Science and scientism, Atheism and religion, Nihilism and utopianism, Social engineering of people, Medicine Covid pandemic and vaccine mandates Tension between scientific progress in digital technology and scientific and technological stagnation in other areas.

**This episode contains brief mentions of suicide and suicide attempts, as well as some humorous profanity**   In this edition of the Dead Ladies Show Podcast, DLS co-founder Florian Duijsens introduces us to the eccentric Dada artist Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven.  An eternally eclectic, German-born New Yorker, the Baroness was known for living life as a work of art, wearing a collage of found items, from tin cans to postage stamps to live birds, seducing almost everyone she met, and creating mind-blowing poetry and sculptures, and never making money for her art, leading to her poverty. These days, she deserves some reclaimed recognition for creating the found art genre known as Readymades, including a particular infamous sculpture credited to French artist Marcel Duchamp (or Marcel Dushit, as the Baroness called him). DLS other co-founder Katy Derbyshire joins producer/host Susan Stone to introduce the show, which was recorded in front of a live audience of enthusiastic college students as part of the Bard College Berlin event Pankumenta back in 2019.  Find our more about Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven and see her art and self-fashioned fashions on our show notes page here: https://deadladiesshow.com/2021/10/16/podcast-47-elsa-von-freytag-loringhoven/ Our theme music is “Little Lily Swing” by Tri-Tachyon. In February 2015, the former Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) released a video showing their destruction of Mesopotamian antiquities at the museum of Mosul. Although perhaps ironic that images are used to show the destruction of images, a video intended to shock can be turned against its makers when analysed thoughtfully. Our guest this episode, Dr. Aaron Tugendhaft, argues in his latest book "The Idols of ISIS: From Assyria to the Internet" that iconoclasm at heart is a political manifesto a matter understood by Abbasid philosopher Abū Naṣr al-Farābī (d.951CE). Dr. Tugendhaft received his PhD from the Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University in 2012 and also holds degrees in Art History and Social Thought from the University of Chicago. In 2013, he received the Jonas Greenfield Prize for Younger Semitists from the American Oriental Society. He currently teaches at Bard College Berlin. Timestamps 00.00 Introduction 02.40 Abū Naṣr al-Farābī (ca. 870–950) thought deeply about the relation between images and politics. He adapted the insights of ancient political philosophers—especially Plato and Aristotle—to make sense of prophetic religion. How do his political treatises shed light on Abraham's iconoclasm that ISIS claimed to uphold? 06.30 Where ISIS spoke of the need to cleanse the world of idols, their critics refer to a moral and legal imperative to protect cultural heritage. How do we see Al-Farābī's thesis play out in our contemporary context? 10.20 You also mention in your book how once archaeologists commonly removed so-called late levels—that is, medieval and modern Islamic remains—without recording them to get to the ancient layers underneath eliding the Islamic Middle East as though only the West beholds antiquity’s beauty today. What is called the "secular" can also have their idols, right? 13.30 Your book ends creatively employing al-Farābī's thoughts on images and politics in the age of video games. "I know you are in there. I wonder if you can hear my voice or feel my presence, my touch. You might not even look like a human being yet. I once saw pictures in a biology book and I know that a human fetus looks pretty much the same as a piglet for a long time. But those look cute when they come out. Nothing like a baby, with its big head, all blue and squishy, covered in yellowish paste. I have seen it before, a long time ago, and the images have never left me. You will most likely be even more ugly. Being evil leaves its marks..."In this episode, Erin O'Loughlin, Sharon Mertins and special guest Rebecca Rukeyser talk about dystopias, dark stories, and why we love grim narratives so much!REBECCA RUKEYSER is the recipient of a 2018 Grant for Non-German Literature, awarded by the Berlin Senate Department for Culture and Europe. With the coronavirus pandemic, Modern Monetary Theory met its moment. A sudden and massive loss of output globally was met with an unprecedented response by governments and central banks and at least some official regret about excessive fiscal austerity after the 2008-09 crisis. Stephanie Kelton's The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People's Economy found a ready audience and remains in the New York Times Hardcover Nonfiction Best-Seller List six months after publication. Yet, one criticism of her book and of MMT generally is that its proponents, examples and policy proposals are overwhelmingly American and built on assumptions about having a sovereign and dominant global currency. Dirk Ehnts, a leading MMT proponent, seeks to address this criticism in  Modern Monetary Theory and European Macroeconomics (Routledge, 2016). In 2020, he published an updated edition in German as Money and Credit: A European Perspective (Metropolis, 2020). The third edition of DICE Forum took place at Prinzessinnengärten in Neukölln on September 17th, featuring guests Dr. Edna Bonhomme and Daddypuss Rex. Our guest mix was made by Detroit-based dj ETTA. DICE Forum is a nomadic event series which explores artists’ personal biographies and artistic practices as well as their relationships to larger cultural movements and art forms. Each installment represents a different artistic perspective, delving into working environments, socio-political influences, creative processes, and more. Each in-depth artist talk is followed by a DJ set, in changing venues throughout Berlin. All talks and DJ mixes will be made available online shortly after each event, to allow everyone to participate regardless of location or current restrictions. About the Artists: Edna Bonhomme is a Black feminist, art worker, historian, lecturer, and writer whose work interrogates the archaeology of (post)colonial science, healing, and liberation. A central question of her work asks: what makes people sick? As a researcher, she answers this question by exploring the spaces and modalities of care and toxicity that shape the possibility for repair. She has collaborated and exhibited critical multimedia projects in Berlin, Copenhagen, Prague, and Vienna which explore the genealogical mutations of archives and memory. She is a co-host of the podcast Decolonization in Action through her Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. In addition to her creative work, Edna has written for publications such as A frica is a Country, Aljazeera, The Baffler Magazine, Missy Magazine, The Nation Magazine, and other publications. She has taught courses at Humboldt University, Bard College Berlin, Drexel University and will be teaching a course entitled "Fear of a Pandemic" at Freie Universität this fall. You can follow her on Twitter at jacobinoire. By night, Daddypuss Rex is an intersectional gender terrorist with a big mouth and who isn’t afraid to use it. Based in Berlin, they are a multidisciplinary artist/poet/stand-up comedian and co-producer of the QueerTrans talk show ‘Just The T’. They often use a mix of poetry and humour to navigate topics such as white supremacy, misogynoir, transphobia and general colonial fuckery. With appearances and performances at the Schwules Museum, OWP nights, CurlCon, Maxim Gorki Theatre, Soho House as well as featuring on city-wide podcast and radio shows (Decolonization in Action, Love in the Time of Corona, Tipsy Bear Radio). Most recently, they co-created and facilitated a QueerTrans stand-up comedy workshop as part of the Outreach nGbK Scholarship 2020 (Vermittlungsstipendium nGbK 2020) - their goal is to touch hearts, minds and butts...with active consent! Conversely, by day, Daddypuss is a trauma-informed yoga teacher whose classes center Black and Queer experiences, narratives and bodies of all shapes, sizes and abilities - giving space to practitioners to fully exercise their agency on and off the mat and to hopefully (re)connecting them to their own bodies.

It can begin at the most basic level such as your town or school. You can give hands-on support and/or money to a cause that is important to you. Consistent and rigorous advocacy creates more knowledge and inspire change. Art Matters: The visual arts can effectively transform one's thinking. There are many powerful works of art, from paintings to monuments, that serve as beautiful and potent reminders of inhumanity in our collective history. Use your voice: Our silence on the world's humanitarian crises is deafening. Use your voice in your community to start a conversation about what we can do right now.
