World leaders are currently meeting in Dubai for the United Nations' COP23 climate summit to discuss how to cope with a changing global climate. At the same time, a new study has suggested that air pollution from using fossil fuels is responsible for 5 million avoidable deaths around the world every year. Host James Reynolds brings together three young people in India, Uganda and Bangladesh to hear their concerns and what it's like to live in a country struggling with air pollution.“I got up, I looked out the window, nothing. I couldn't even see my own lane. It was extremely sad,” said 12 year old Myra in Delhi, India. “I was getting ready to go to the school. I was going to my bus and I couldn't see anything. Almost all days smog is covering the entire city. It's suffocating.”Three women from the United States, India and the UK - all in their twenties - also share why they decided to not have children in order to help save the planet. “Every year has become more significant,” says Melissa in London, “and of course making changes in my own life to help the climate like being plant-based and not having children seems to be quite a good decision in that regard as well.”A co-production between the BBC OS team and Boffin Media.

This butterfly is excited to be speaking with Brent Perry. Brent defined an industry when he oversaw the development of the world's first battery for marine propulsion. Energy storage systems are now a major – and increasingly important – player on the global marine energy scene. In the years since that first battery, he has become a world expert on lithium energy storage in marine applications and recently launched PwrSwäp, a pay-as-you-go clean energy subscription service that can electrify marine vessels, terminals, ports, and even industrial sites and small communities. His 30-year history in commercial shipbuilding and deep knowledge of energy systems gives him a unique perspective on the hybrid and electric marine industry. Brent has personally been involved in the great majority of all large hybrid and electric ferry projects on the water today. From Ampere in Norway to Scandlines Benedikte and the For Seaferries Aurora and Tycho Brahe, he has unsurpassed experience in the sector. Brent is an experienced, engaging, and impassioned speaker. Major presentations include speeches at the UN Conference on Climate Change, COP21 in Paris, and COP23 in Bonn. Mr. Perry resides in Vancouver, British Columbia, and enjoys sailing with his wife and three children. In this episode, you will hear about green energy storage, zero-emission operation at shore and at sea, financial values as an incentive for a change, and more. Some notes... In an interview done earlier this year, long time climate activist James Cameron provides a fascinating insider's perspective the on the COP— highlighting the highs and lows of various COPs over the last thirty years or so—and the COP's greatest achievements—against a background of slow but growing momentum in the private and public sphere to deal with climate change. James also discusses the vital and growing role of the legal system in dealing with global warming. He talks about the work that he has done over this time supporting the various COPs -and COP23 in particular. James also discusses the prospects for COP26 and shares his optimism on the prospects for businesses pursuing Net Zero strategies. Fascinating and first-hand insights into international and multilateral approaches to responding to climate change.  James Cameron is an influential figure within the international climate change community. He has been engaged with environmental and climate change policy for some 30 years, working variously as a barrister, financier, social entrepreneur, and as a trusted advisor to myriad climate change and environmental organisations. He has been involved in many of the COPs over recent decades, most notably COP X in Fiji. James is called “a Friend of COP26,” advising the UK government on the upcoming COP in Glasgow in November. He is also a member of HM Treasury's Infrastructure UK Advisory Council, GE's ecomagination advisory board, is an advisor to the Climate Bonds Initiative, and a trustee member of the UK Green Building Council.

The theme of "better conversations" was exactly the right place to start. I hope you enjoy this exploration into what it means to communicate in a way that is profoundly human. The Pacific Ocean is the most sparsely populated region on earth, while the island nations and peoples are also among the most threatened by climate change impacts. The isolation of these islands geographically is even akin to their isolation from western climate science and global climate policy discussions. In a time of rapid environmental, economic, and cultural change, how can we help these peoples and countries cope? Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) or indigenous ecological knowledge provide a valuable understanding of nature and culture to promote hope and positive action. In the first episode of Season 2, we meet Tui Shortland, Director of Te Kopu, Pacific Indigenous and Local Knowledge Centre of Distinction. Tui is a climate change leader for many of the island nations in the Pacific, and she's worked hard to create space for indigenous peoples and women in the international climate policy community. New openings have appeared recently. Fiji recently hosted COP23 in December 2017, and the UNFCCC has created a new means for voices from non-state actors such as NGOs, ethnic and indigenous minorities, gender groups to participate in climate negotiations structured through a Polynesian tradition called “Talanoa dialogues” (https://talanoadialogue.com/). Tui describes a positive, urgent vision for residents of the Pacific Islands who have done little to contribute to global climate change but now face a highly uncertain future in their homelands. Following that conversation, we bring in AGWA's Coordinator, John Matthews, to kick off a brand new segment called “Postcards from the Future.”

As the 23rd Conference of the Parties (COP23) comes to a close in Bonn, Switzerland, where do we stand on our climate commitments? What issues are on the table, and which have been swept under the rug? How are we tackling what many consider to be one of the biggest elephants in the room – the role of livestock and global overconsumption of meat and dairy products? In this episode, we welcome back Mark Pershin on the podcast, founder and CEO of Less Meat Less Heat, an organization committed to shifting societal attitudes towards meat consumption to curtail agriculture’s damaging impact on the environment.   Mark and I discuss: Why so little progress has been made in reaching agreements on agriculture and food in UN Climate Change Conferences How a coalition is forming that aims to put the overconsumption of meat on the negotiating table and the role of livestock in climate change front and centre of policy debates Why grassroots movements and individual actions remain vital in the fight against climate change Links:  Less Meat Less Heat website Climatarian Diet Challenge "Grazed and confused" – Food Climate Research Network Climate Agriculture unmasked -- indigenous organized Put Climate on Pause coalition website Clean Air Coalition Boycott of US Fossil Fuel Presentation at COP23 You may also like: FFS 000 - Why a Food Podcast FFS 001 - The Climatarian Diet FFS 012 - Cultured Meat: Looking Beyond the Hype with New Harvest

Leo Hickman is director and editor of Carbon Brief, a leading UK based website covering the latest developments in climate science, climate policy, and energy policy. Carbon Brief specialises in clear data-driven articles and graphics to communicate complex and fast-moving developments in climate science to improve the understanding of climate change both in terms of the science and policy response. Leo previously worked for 16 years as journalist, editor and author at the Guardian newspaper and prior to joining Carbon Brief worked as WWF-UK's chief advisor on climate change. His books include A Life Stripped Bare,The Final Call and most recently Will Jellyfish Rule the World? In this special episode devoted to COP23, Leo gives us a succinct summary of events in Bonn. He reminds us that since Paris, the annual COP meetings have focused on creating a rulebook to implement the Paris Accords. He stresses that current pledges fall short of meeting the goals set out in Paris, something highlighted by UNEP's annual “Emissions Gap Report.” He discusses how disagreements around financing have reignited tensions between developed and developing countries, particularly over action before the Paris agreement formally begins in 2020. Leo also addresses the two American delegations that stole the spotlight and emphasises how Trump's withdrawal from Paris has acted as a catalyst for American action on climate change. He also addresses how China is filling the void left by American leadership and briefly discusses the British presence at Bonn, notably through the Powering Past Coal alliance. Finally, he gives us an overview of key events to look for over the next year, including the Californian Global Climate Action Summit in September 2018, as well as telling us of Carbon Brief's upcoming projects. Our Chinese-language episodes will be returning in the following week.   Maybe you’ve heard of the Paris Agreement, the Kyoto Protocol, or even the ignominious Copenhagen summit. But only the most selfless, committed among us stay tuned-in to the UN climate negotiations through the thrice-a-year intersessional meetings.   During the final days of COP23 in Bonn, Germany, we chat with Li Shuo, an international climate negotiation expert at Greenpeace East Asia, to hear about the inglorious work of parsing through the fine print of UN negotiation text. Li Shuo explains the state of the UN climate negotiations in the post-Paris Agreement, post-Trump era, and describes the full-body, pound-shedding, caffeine-fueled commitment needed to engage in UN climate advocacy, running from meeting to meeting.   One last note: we had a hard time finding a quiet place to record at the COP23 conference; apologies to our audience for the technical difficulties and "ghost-like" sounds in this episode.

In this COP miniseries, we'll be taking a dive into the weeds of the negotiations and the role of China on the international climate stage. But first, we're taking you behind the scenes at the UN climate talks, to hear a cross-section of voices, some young, some old, calling for urgent climate action.

Episode 22 of POLITICO's EU Confidential podcast features Eldar Sætre, the CEO of Norway's oil and gas company Statoil. We spoke to Sætre on November 9, after the COP23 global climate conference had kicked off in Bonn, Germany, but before Norway's $1 trillion sovereign wealth fund proposed dropping investments in oil and gas stocks. We also chatted with POLITICO's Sara Stefanini, who has spent the week in Bonn reporting on the climate conference. Paging Rex Tillerson: Sætre says the future of his business is green, but that it won't give up oil and gas anytime soon. Would he call U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson — a former oil and gas CEO himself — to push a green message? “You know I could call Rex, but I think the U.S. politics is more complex than that. So I don't know ... I'm very open about this when I go to Washington.” Beating the dependency on subsidies: Scaling up the use of renewable energies such as wind and solar power has tended to require big upfront public investments or tax incentives. That landscape is changing quickly, Sætre said. “I remember the first projects that we engaged in requiring massive subsidies. And what we've seen in the latest project is that you're very close to having and installing offshore wind actually more or less without subsidies ... That's a tremendous journey.” EU WTF moments of the week — White supremacists march in Warsaw and European Parliament's hot water cut off: In Europe, it can be easy to dismiss white supremacy movements as merely populist or nationalist in nature. This week the podcast panel looks at how radical nationalists demanding a "White Europe" and an "Islamic Holocaust" during Polish independence day celebrations made international headlines. On a lighter note, we also discuss why MEPs have lost hot water in their offices, forcing them to take a cold shower in both literal and metaphorical terms. Dear POLITICO: The panel advises a Brussels employee who says their boss has signed at least one non-disclosure agreement with an allegedly mistreated female staff member, and that their team has been warned not to speak to the media about it.

Mongabay is lucky to have Jane Goodall on its Advisory Board, and just before founder and CEO Rhett Butler was scheduled to speak with her most recently, research came out that vindicated her contention, which she’s held for nearly 60 years, that animals have personalities, so we recorded her thoughts about that for the Mongabay Newscast. “Quite honestly I think almost everybody recognized that animals have personalities, whether they were in the wild or whether they weren't,” she says. Other topics discussed include trophy hunting, activism, and hope for the future (a full transcript will be available at Mongabay.com on 11/17/17). Our second guest is reporter Justin Catanoso, who is covering the UN Climate Change conference (COP23) for Mongabay this week, and he joins us from the event in Bonn, Germany.
