PLANTED A LONG-BEAKED WILLOW TREE TODAY, JOYFUL : 1/4: The Man Who Planted Trees: A Story of Lost Groves, the Science of Trees, and a Plan to Save the Planet, by Jim Robbins. https://www.amazon.com/Man-Who-Planted-Trees-Science/dp/0812981294/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Twenty years ago, David Milarch, a northern Michigan nurseryman with a penchant for hard living, had a vision: angels came to tell him that the Earth was in trouble. Its trees were dying and, without them, human life was in jeopardy. The solution, they told him, was to clone the champion trees of the world—the largest, the hardiest, the ones that had survived millennia and were most resilient to climate change—and create a kind of Noah's ark of tree genetics. Without knowing if the message had any basis in science, or why he'd been chosen for this task, Milarch began his mission of cloning the world's great trees. Many scientists and tree experts told him it couldn't be done, but, twenty years later, his team has successfully cloned some of the world's oldest trees—among them giant redwoods and sequoias. They have also grown seedlings from the oldest tree in the world, the bristlecone pine Methuselah. When the New York Times journalist Jim Robbins came upon Milarch's story, he was fascinated but had his doubts. Yet, over several years, listening to Milarch and talking to scientists, he came to realize that there is so much we do not yet know about trees: how they die, how they communicate, the myriad crucial ways they filter water and air and otherwise support life on Earth. It became clear that as the planet changes, trees and forest are essential to assuring its survival .1863 AMAZON

This week, we're joined by artist and composer, David Longstreth of Dirty Projectors. Known for his genre-defying work and singular creative vision, David sits down with Jeremy to talk about scoring the new A24 film The Legend of Ochi and the process behind his latest album, Song of the Earth—a sweeping collection of orchestral songs that blurs the line between the classical and the contemporary. The two dive into the rhythms of fatherhood, the unexpected joy of sharing a stage with Bernie Sanders, and the simple pleasures of swimming and meditating. It's a wide-ranging, thoughtful conversation with one of music's most curious minds.*Sponsored by Bezel - the trusted marketplace for buying and selling your next luxury watch

If you step outside at dawn on June third of 2033, you’ll see the planet Venus standing due east – the brilliant “morning star.” But if you don’t want to wait that long to experience that beautiful view, then take a look at dawn tomorrow – Venus will be standing in the same spot in the sky. Not only that, it stands at that spot in the sky every eight years. In fact, anytime you see Venus – whether as the morning star or evening star – you can find it at that same spot eight years later. That’s because there’s a near-“resonance” in the orbital cycles of Earth and Venus. Venus completes 13 orbits around the Sun for every eight orbits that Earth makes. The ratio isn’t exact, but it’s quite close. Thanks to that, Venus follows five repeating cycles across our sky. It’s like the planet is a toy train on a looping, winding track. It hits every point along the track with every cycle. If you plot that motion from the perspective of Earth, it traces out a flowing pattern like five rose petals. The clockwork precision makes it easy to predict the entire sequence of Venus’s appearances. We know that it always remains in view in the morning sky for about 263 days, disappears for about 50 days, then moves into the evening sky. So if you miss the view of Venus tomorrow, or the next day, or the day after that, just mark it in your calendar – and look for it in the same location eight years later. In Acts 2, we find a body of believers devoted to the apostles' teaching, each other, the breaking of bread, and prayer. In a world of consumption, do those characteristics still define the Church today? The Church does not exist for itself – it exists to advance God's Kingdom on Earth and to reveal His love to people who are not yet part of it.

ASCENSION SUNDAY!This week, the Church worldwide celebrates the ascension of Christ following His resurrection. At BCC we celebrated by looking at the Scripture about this as well as taking a look at the Now and Not Yet Kingdom of God. Join us for a special Sunday in which we celebrate what Christ's ascension meant for believers back then and for us now.Things to consider as you listen:The Kingdom of God NOT YET will be established with Christ's final return when the Heaven's & Earth become one, fully under the reign of God.The Kingdom of God NOW is the rule & reign of God in the lives of believers everywhere. Are we asking the wrong questions today? When we trust the who, we less desperately need to know when.Who are you watching? What's your focus?Where are your eyes?
Is the Ancient Astronaut Theory True? This Changes Everything! Cub Kuker Supernatural Podcast (S5/EP19)The ancient astronaut theory, popularized by Zecharia Sitchin, posits that ancient civilizations on Earth were visited and influenced by extraterrestrial beings. Sitchin's interpretation focuses heavily on Sumerian mythology and ancient texts, particularly the Sumerian cuneiform tablets. Today, I aim to delve deeper into Sitchin's propositions. In future articles, I will explore my personal theory on this topic and offer corrections I believe are necessary, especially in light of biblical evidence. For believers in Jesus, this theory holds significant implications, potentially shedding light on concepts such as glorified bodies in the Book of Revelation, ascension into heaven, and Jesus' teachings about the nature of the Father.☞ Official Website: https://www.CubKuker.comUnlock Supernatural Secrets of the Bible and Beyond with Cub Kuker Supernatural™Hi, I'm Jacob Kuker (Cub), a Christian ancient astronaut theorist and content creator. The Moon has regular dates with the stars. It returns to the same position relative to the stars every 27 days and eight hours. As an example, the Moon cozied up to Regulus, the bright heart of the lion, on May 5th, and it does so again this evening – 27 days, eight hours later. This encounter is especially close as seen from the United States – the Moon and Regulus will appear to almost touch each other. That time span is known as the lunar sidereal period – “sidereal” meaning “related to the stars.” The planets have their own sidereal periods. Mars, for example, returns to the same point relative to the stars every 22 and a half months. Tonight, Mars is well to the lower right of Regulus, and looks like an orange star. It’ll return to almost the same position in April of 2027. The match won’t be exact because our viewing angle to the Red Planet changes a bit from year to year. The sidereal period is different from the period relative to the Sun – a difference caused by Earth’s own orbital motion. For the Moon, that period lasts 29 and a half days – the length of a cycle of phases. And for Mars, the Sun-related period is almost 26 months. That’s how long it takes Mars to return to the same angle from the Sun – part of the precise but sometimes confusing motions in the night sky. More about the motions of the planets tomorrow. This week in Episode #695, I talk with Ethan Sacks, accomplished creator of comics including Star Wars, Old Man Hawkeye, and Midnight Suns, and his daughter and co-writer, Naomi Sacks, who are telling an allegory of a deeply personal time in their lives called A Haunted Girl. They have a Zoop.gg crowdfunding event going on until about Thursday, June 12. This book was originally published by Image Comics and Syzygy Publishing, and this hardcover edition contains all-new behind the scenes features and is the ultimate collector's item for fans of this acclaimed supernatural horror story. The book is described this way: “The fate of all life on Earth depends on a girl who doesn't know if she wants to live. Cleo, a 16-year-old adopted Japanese-American whose anxiety and depression drives her to suicidal thoughts, is fresh out of the hospital and trying unsuccessfully to reintegrate back into her old life.” This campaign went live on the Zoop crowdfunding platform, Tuesday, May 6th. This date was chosen specifically to coincide with World Mental Health Awareness month, due to the book's subject matter. We explore how the series came to be, who the various characters are, and also talk about how these creatives worked together and what else they might have coming our way soon. When tropical storm systems barrel across the Atlantic Ocean toward North America, they often take aim at the Lesser Antilles—an arc of small islands that marks the eastern boundary of the Caribbean Sea. In fact, the islands often are the first thing forecasters talk about when a tropical system heads our way.The Lesser Antilles arc from the U.S. Virgin Islands, near Puerto Rico, all the way down to South America. They comprise three separate groups: the Leeward Islands, the Windward Islands, and the Leeward Antilles. The Windwards extend farthest into the Atlantic. They were the first stop for European sailing ships, which followed the prevailing winds to the Americas. Most of the islands are volcanic. They formed as two of the plates that make up Earth's crust plunged below the Caribbean Plate. As the rock descended, it melted. Some of the molten rock then forced its way upward, building the islands.Earthquakes rock some of the islands. And some of the volcanoes that built the islands are still active. A massive eruption that began in 1995, for example, destroyed the capital of the island of Montserrat, and forced most of the population to leave the island.Despite the volcanoes and hurricanes, many of the individual islands are popular tourist sites. Places like the Virgin Islands, Aruba, and Martinique offer tropical beaches, coral reefs, rugged mountains, and other natural attractions—at the edge of the Caribbean Sea.

To the more poetic among us, summer is a time of soft breezes, warm nights, and fireflies: The livin’ is easy, the breeze makes us feel fine, the warm Sun shines kindly upon us. But there’s less poetry in the summers on Mars – especially in the northern hemisphere, where summer began on Thursday. It stays cold, and the only fireflies are occasional meteors blazing through the night. Like the seasons on Earth, those on Mars are caused by the planet’s tilt on its axis. Northern summer begins when the north pole dips most directly toward the Sun. But Mars’s orbit is much more lopsided than Earth’s, so there’s a much greater change in the planet’s distance from the Sun. Mars is farthest from the Sun during northern summer. So the summer stays fairly cool. Summers and winters tend to be quiet times in the planet’s thin atmosphere. Big dust storms fire up in spring and fall, sometimes covering the whole planet. But they settle down by the start of summer. Mars does see more “dust devils” during summer – whirlwinds that can tower miles high. Northern summer will last for 178 Mars days – not giving way until the start of autumn exactly six months from now. Mars is close to the upper left of the Moon at nightfall, and looks like a fairly bright orange star. The true star Regulus is farther along that line. More about this lineup tomorrow. The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
From May 19, 2025. In this week's closer look we are going to look at the earth-facing missions that are getting dragged down by our atmosphere and will be forcibly retired by physics in the next few years, again with no replacements in the works. These missions allow us to do long term monitoring of our planet, its atmosphere, and the variables that help us understand everything from weather to climate change. We also look at cool new exoplanet discoveries, the beautiful death of a star, and tales from the launch pad. We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. Just visit: https://www.patreon.com/365DaysOfAstronomy and donate as much as you can! This week we speak with Dr. Mike Wall, ace space reporter from Space.com, about Starship's recent test flight. What went right, what went wrong, and what are the prospects for Elon's mammoth rocket meeting NASA's goals for a moon landing in 2027? Also, Musk's recent video outlining future plans for Starship and a Martian metropolis, Chinese company Sepoch's recent (and very Starship-like) vertical launch and landing test, Japan's robotic lander, Resilience, about to attempt a lunar touchdown, and roadside assistance for the Psyche asteroid mission. See this and more on This Week in Space! Headlines New Dwarf Planet Discovery: Scientists at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton have identified a new dwarf planet with an orbit over 16 times the size of Earth's. Its closest approach to the Sun is 44.5 times Earth's orbit, similar to Pluto's orbit, placing it far out in the Oort cloud. While exciting, this object, named 2017 OF, is not Planet Nine because its mass doesn't align with the perturbations observed in other objects. NASA's Psyche Mission Update: NASA's Psyche spacecraft experienced a fuel pressure glitch requiring a switch to a backup propellant line for its Hall effect thruster. Engineers successfully restored pressure, and the mission is still on track to arrive at the metallic asteroid Psyche in 2029. This mission is crucial as Psyche is believed to be the stripped-away core of an ancient proto-planet, offering insights into planet formation. China's Reusable Rocket Advancements: Chinese rocket manufacturer Space Epoch successfully performed a vertical ascent and controlled vertical descent test of a booster stage, similar to SpaceX's Falcon 9 landings. The stainless steel rocket successfully soft-landed in the waters off Hainan Island, demonstrating advanced gimballing for stable landing. Main Topic - Starship Flight 9 Test Recap: SpaceX's Starship Test Flight 9 was deemed a partial success. The Super Heavy booster was reflown for the first time, demonstrating reusability and performing well despite an experimental hard ocean splashdown that resulted in an explosion six minutes into flight. The Ship upper stage reached space and the desired trajectory, an improvement over previous flights, but failed to deploy dummy Starlink satellites or perform an in-space relight due to an attitude control anomaly, possibly a fuel leak. SpaceX's Ambitious Starship Plans: Elon Musk outlined plans for Starship Version 3, envisioned as the first fully mature version capable of Mars missions, rapid reuse, and in-orbit refueling. The long-term goal includes sending thousands of Starships and hundreds of people to Mars to establish a self-sustaining city. Lunar Starship for Artemis Missions: There's ongoing discussion about the number of tanker flights required for a lunar mission, with estimates ranging from 8 to 12, even 16 flights. The timeline for Artemis III in 2027 is a concern, given the need for numerous refueling missions and the development of life support systems for crewed flights, which are currently absent in the Starship test vehicles. Competition in Lunar Landers: While SpaceX is developing Lunar Starship, Blue Origin is also a strong contender with its Blue Moon lander, which is China These show notes have been truncated due to length. Story of the Week (DR):Boeing strikes $1.1 billion deal with Justice Department over deadly 737 Max crashes—and must pay $445 million to victims' familiesBoeing will avoid a felony conviction by agreeing to pay over $1.1 billion, which includes a $243.6 million fine, $444.5 million to victims' families, and more than $455 million to enhance compliance, safety, and quality systems. The families were informed nearly a week after the DOJ said it had struck a tentative deal with Boeing that allows the company to avoid criminal prosecution for allegedly misleading regulators about the company's 737 Max plane before two crashes that killed 346 people.Market Basket CEO Arthur T Demoulas placed on administrative leave by board of directorsDemoulas has been placed on paid administrative leave by the company's board of directors, along with two of his children and several other executives. The board initiated an internal investigation into Demoulas' conduct, citing concerns over transparency and succession planning. Specifically, the board expressed frustration over limited access to critical company information, including budgets and plans for leadership succession, and alleged that Demoulas was planning a work stoppage. Demoulas has responded through a spokesperson, claiming he was "ousted" in what he describes as a "farcical cover for a hostile takeover." This situation echoes a similar family dispute in 2014, which led to widespread employee protests and customer boycotts in support of Demoulas. The current conflict raises questions about the company's leadership and future direction amid ongoing supermarket industry consolidationIn June 2014, CEO Arthur T. Demoulas was ousted by a board controlled by his cousin, Arthur S. Demoulas, amidst longstanding family disputes over company control.Customer: “If the employees think another walkout makes sense, then I'd support them. "I'm a little stuck in a bind, where I'm like, well, I don't wanna, you know, speak up against the administration, but I … also don't wanna take responsibility for everything the administration's doing. So I'm, like, kinda stuck, you know?"Deepfake ElonFalse StartAugust 2006: “[Our] long term plan is to build a wide range of models, including affordably priced family cars … When someone buys the Tesla Roadster,” he added, “they are actually helping pay for development of the low-cost family car.”2016: Musk reiterated that, even though Tesla had not yet delivered on the 2006 promise, it still planned to build an “affordable, high-volume car.”January 2025: Musk said that—finally—Tesla would start producing the affordable model in the second half of 2025.April 2025: Reuters reported that Tesla had scrapped plans for the cheap family car. Musk posted on X that “Reuters is lying (again),” eliciting the Reuters response that “[Musk] did not identify any specific inaccuracies.” A Tesla source told Reuters that instead of the long-promised cheap family car, “Elon's directive is to go all in on robotaxi.”Hyperloop HypeAugust 2013: “A new open source form of transportation that could revolutionize travel.”The Hyperloop was shuttered in 2023—but even as late as 2022, Musk was still promising that Hyperloop could go from Boston to New York City “in less than half an hour.”Driverless PioneeringSeptember 2013: “We should be able to do 90 percent of miles driven [autonomously] within three years.”Full Autonomous DrivingOctober 2015: “Tesla will have a car that can do full autonomy in about three years.”December 2015: “We're going to end up with complete autonomy … and I think we will have complete autonomy in approximately two years.”January 2016: “I think that within two years you'll be able to summon your car from across the country.”.June 2016: “I consider autonomous driving to be a basically solved problem … We're less than two years away from complete autonomy.”November 2018: “I think we'll get to full self-driving next year.”Autonomous ChargingOctober 2016: “we'll be able to do a demonstration drive of full autonomy all the way from LA to New York—from home in LA to let's say dropping you off in Time Square in New York, and then having the car go park itself—by the end of next year … without the need for a single touch, including the charger.”In April 2017: “I think we're still on track for being able to go cross-country from LA to New York by the end of the year, fully autonomous … Just software limited.”BoringApril 2017: The Boring Company was supposed to deliver an underground maze of tunnels where passengers could travel in autonomous vehicles at 150 miles per hour. The goal was to build one mile of tunnel per week: “Finally, finally, finally, there is something that I think can solve the goddamn traffic problem.”So far: the 1.7-mile LVCC Loop in Las Vegas: currently takes paying passengers between three stations in chauffeur-driven Model Y Tesla cars which slow to just 15 miles per hour when the tunnels get congested.Brain ChipsAugust 2017: First product would be on the market “in about four years.”In 2024: the first human trial subject receives a Neuralink implant (though some researchers show frustration over a lack of information about the study.)Special DeliveryNovember 2018: “Probably technically be able to [self-deliver Teslas to customers' doors] in about a year.”FSD Finally?January 2019: “When do we think it is safe for full self driving?” asks Musk on a Q4 earnings call. “Probably towards the end of this year.”Feb 2019: “We will feature complete [with] full self-driving this year … The car will be able to … take you all the way to your destination without an intervention this year. I'm certain of that. That is not a question mark.”January 2021, on an earnings call: “I'm highly confident the car will drive itself for the reliability in excess of a human this year.
