426 Gear-Up Landings & Gear Collapses: How to Prevent Them with Tom Turner + GA News

    Aviation News Talk podcast

Gear-up landings are often dismissed as embarrassing pilot mistakes, but landing gear mishaps are far more common, complicated, and expensive than many pilots realize. In this episode, Max talks with Tom Turner of the American Bonanza Society Air Safety Foundation about why gear-up landings and landing gear collapses continue to happen—and the operating habits and maintenance practices that can prevent them. Turner says the Beechcraft Bonanza, Baron, Debonair, and Travel Air fleet averages about one reported landing gear mishap every week. Those events represent roughly 40 percent of the mishaps reported to the American Bonanza Society. And because many landing gear events do not meet NTSB reporting thresholds, Turner says contacts in the insurance, aircraft rebuilding, and salvage industries believe the actual number may be two to three times higher. The problem is not unique to Beechcraft. Turner previously tracked landing gear events across piston retractable-gear aircraft and found comparable or even higher rates in some other types. Landing gear mishaps also have an outsized impact on aircraft insurance because a seemingly survivable gear-up landing can result in propeller damage, an engine teardown, belly damage, and repair costs high enough for an insurer to total the airplane. Much of the conversation focuses on developing habits that make forgetting the landing gear less likely. Turner teaches the concept "gear down to go down." Rather than beginning the final descent simply by reducing power, landing gear extension becomes the event that initiates the descent from traffic pattern altitude or onto the final portion of an instrument approach. He also teaches Gear Extension Altitude, or GEA. On a straight-in or other nonstandard arrival, the pilot selects an altitude below which the airplane will not descend until the landing gear has been extended and confirmed. Max relates two occasions during his flying career when normal landing gear cues broke down. In one, while training in a Diamond DA42, he reached the flare before his instructor revealed that the gear was still up. In another, while flying a Vision Jet instrument approach, the normal glidepath cue used for gear extension never appeared. The airplane's warning system ultimately caught the omission. That leads to one of Turner's strongest recommendations: regardless of when you normally extend the landing gear, establish a deliberate final gear confirmation on short final, around 400 to 500 feet AGL. If distraction, a changed traffic pattern, a go-around, or some other interruption causes you to miss your normal extension cue, that final check provides one more opportunity to catch the error. Warning systems alone are not enough. Turner describes pilots who continued toward landing while gear warning horns sounded and bright warning lights flashed. During high workload, pilots may simply stop processing repetitive warnings. In multi-engine training, the problem can become particularly insidious because pilots may listen to a landing gear warning horn throughout a simulated engine-out exercise and effectively tune it out before landing. Turner recommends using more than cockpit lights to verify the gear. Listen to the gear motor and notice whether it sounds normal. Feel and observe the expected change in drag and pitch. Compare airspeed, power, descent rate, and aircraft performance with what you normally expect. Then verify the cockpit indications. ABS even recommends holding the gear handle until this entire confirmation process is complete. Go-arounds introduce another human-factors trap. Pilots may vividly remember extending the gear—but the memory may be from the previous trip around the pattern. Turner favors making a go-around resemble a normal takeoff, then using the same normal extension cue on the next approach. Whatever technique a pilot chooses, the key is consistency and making sure the cue will still occur following a go-around. The discussion then turns to touch-and-go landings, which both Max and Tom strongly discourage in retractable-gear airplanes. A pilot reaching to retract the flaps can inadvertently select the landing gear instead. They similarly recommend not reconfiguring the airplane during the landing roll. Wait until the airplane is clear of the runway and preferably stopped on the taxiway before moving flap or similar controls. And pilots should not assume squat switches will save them. Turner describes observations showing that systems tied to weight-on-wheels switches may not recognize the airplane as firmly on the ground until surprisingly late in the landing roll—and may switch to flight mode early during takeoff. Bumps and unloading of the landing gear can further reduce their effectiveness. Gear collapses also have a significant maintenance component. At American Bonanza Society maintenance evaluation events, aircraft are placed on jacks and their landing gear rigging and downlock tensions are carefully inspected. Turner says it is not unusual for roughly two airplanes out of a 24-aircraft event to have gear tensions so far out of tolerance that the owners are advised not to fly until adjustments are made. ABS considers improper rigging serious enough that it developed a 38-step landing gear inspection checklist to supplement normal Beechcraft inspection procedures. Finally, Turner discusses what to do when the gear itself malfunctions. If the gear begins to extend and then jams, perhaps popping the motor circuit breaker, repeatedly cycling it may turn a damaged push rod or rod end into a complete failure. Instead, Turner recommends following the airplane's approved manual landing gear extension procedure, which can place less stress on a compromised system and may give the pilot the best chance of getting all the gear down. The episode highlights the American Bonanza Society's Put Your Gear Down campaign, which makes decades of landing gear operating and maintenance information available to pilots of all retractable-gear airplanes. Its goal is simple: replace the familiar saying that there are "those who have and those who will" have a gear mishap with a third category—pilots who use disciplined operating and maintenance practices to make sure it never happens to them. Text us a comment or question! If you're over 50 and you've ever said - or even thought - "My metabolism is broken," this episode is for you. This week, I'm continuing my special Behind the Book series by reading Chapter 4 of my upcoming book: Fully Alive: A Blueprint for Building the Strongest, Healthiest, and Most Meaningful Second Half of Your Life. And in this chapter, we're tackling one of the biggest - and most discouraging - beliefs in the over-50 health and fitness world - that aging has somehow broken your metabolism.Because let's face it… it can certainly feel that way.You eat less. You exercise more. You try harder. And somehow the strategies that worked at 30 or 40 don't seem to work anymore. So what happened? In this chapter, I'll explain why your metabolism isn't some mysterious force conspiring against you - and why "broken" may be completely the wrong way to think about what's happening inside your body.Instead, we'll explore a much more powerful idea -  Adaptation.Your body is constantly responding to the environment you create and the signals you send it.Years of restrictive dieting. Loss of muscle. Reduced activity. Poor sleep. Stress. Repeated cycles of losing and regaining weight. Your body notices all of it - and adapts accordingly. But here's the incredibly good news - adaptation works both ways. The same body that adapted to years of restriction and inactivity can begin adapting to strength training, better nutrition, movement, recovery, and consistency.Your body isn't finished at 50. Or 60. Or 70.It's still listening. In This Episode, You'll Learn:What metabolism actually is—and what it isn'tWhy having a "slow metabolism" is more complicated than most people realizeWhy weight loss can become more difficult even when you're eating lessHow years of dieting can change the environment your body is responding toWhy muscle loss and declining activity matter so much after 50The difference between metabolic damage and metabolic adaptationWhy the bathroom scale can convince you nothing is working—even when your health is improvingWhy trying to force your body to lose weight may be the wrong approachHow strength training, movement, nutrition, recovery, and consistency send your body new signalsWhy your goal isn't to get your 25-year-old metabolism backAnd why the body you have today may be far more capable of change than you've been led to believe The big takeaway?Stop asking "Is my metabolism broken?"Start asking "What has my metabolism been responding to?"Because once you stop treating your body like the enemy, you can begin creating an environment that encourages it to thrive. And that's where things get exciting.

Comparison Anxiety — A Guided Meditation for When You Feel Behind in Life | Box Breathing Comparison anxiety can creep in on the most ordinary days — that quiet sense that everyone else has the job, the relationship, the plan, and you're still standing at the same crossroads. This guided meditation is for anyone who feels like the only one who hasn't got it together, using box breathing (4-4-4-4) to calm the nervous system before a set of gentle affirmations that put the measuring stick down for good. Download the free Anchored app — the one app with no feed, no likes, nothing to compare yourself against — at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/anchored-panic-anxiety/id6785035669 Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett, this episode gently separates life-stage comparison anxiety from doomscrolling — it's not about the scroll itself, but about what we do to ourselves when we hold our own life up against someone else's highlight reel. You'll be guided through steady box breathing, then a golden-light visualisation and a set of affirmations to help you feel calm, grounded, and enough exactly as you are. ⏱️ Time Chapters* 00:00 – Cold Open: The Only One Who Hasn't Got It Together* 01:00 – Box Breathing (4-4-4-4)* 05:00 – Golden Light Affirmations* 09:00 – 3 Daily Caring Tips* 10:00 – Outro & Anchored

If you’ve ever doubted whether you still had the “music in you,” to take a bold leap at midlife, this conversation with Edi Matsumoto offers proof that reinvention is possible. After 30 years as a nurse practitioner and disallusioned by the health care system, Edi traded in her stethoscope for a paintbrush. We talk about the moment she realized her calling had shifted, the leap of faith that led her to open her own gallery in California, and how a whimsical concept called “Otter Therapy” became a genuine source of joy and healing for thousands of people. In this episode, you'll discover: Why burnout and disillusionment can be the universe’s way of pointing you toward your next chapter, not a sign that you’ve failed. How Edi found her niche by paying attention to what people genuinely responded to, not just what she thought she “should” be painting. Why the Japanese concept of ikigai offers a simple framework for midlife reinvention. How community, like Edi’s monthly “Carmel Bohemian Club” gathering, became essential fuel for staying the course when self-doubt crept in. About My Guest Edi Matsumoto spent nearly 30 years as a nurse practitioner before leaving healthcare in 2021 to become a full-time artist. She’s the creator of “Otter Therapy,” a series of whimsical fine art pieces that reimagine beloved paintings and portraits with sea otters. An eighteenth-century mansion is a club now, and after dinner a small party drifts out onto the balcony above the park to drink coffee in the dark. Rods of light wheel across the sky — the Air Force practising, searching for enemy aircraft — sweeping over a stone front, over a chestnut tree in full blossom, and then, for a second, straight across the balcony itself. And Mrs Ivimey says: you'll never guess what that made me see. You can listen offline, any time you wake in the night, in the Anchored app —

Title NSDR / Non-Sleep Deep Rest — Reach Deep Rest Without Forcing It | 10-Minute Physiological Sigh Meditation If you feel tired in a way that sleep never seems to touch — wired, switched-on, unable to power down even when you're exhausted — this 10-minute NSDR (Non-Sleep Deep Rest) session is for you. Hosted by clinical hypnotherapist and former paramedic Martin Hewlett, this guided meditation helps you reach deep rest without forcing it, resetting an overstimulated nervous system while you're still awake to feel it happen. Today's practice is built around the physiological sigh — a double breath in through the nose followed by one long, slow breath out. Research from Stanford found it's one of the fastest ways to bring the body down out of high alert, flipping the biological off switch and engaging the vagus nerve. From there we let the breath go completely free and sink into non-sleep deep rest: nothing to solve, nothing to reach, entirely off duty. Whether you're looking for anxiety relief in the middle of a racing day, a way to quiet a "tired but wired" mind, or a daily NSDR habit to protect your calm, give yourself permission to lie down, soften, and let the whole system settle. ⏱️ Time Chapters00:00 – "The Tiredness Sleep Doesn't Touch" (Why You Need Deep Rest, Not More Sleep)00:36 – Today's Focus: I Can Reach Deep Rest Without Forcing It00:41 – Introduction from Martin & Anchored App Overview01:16 – Resetting the Nervous System Before We Rest01:38 – The Physiological Sigh & the Stanford Research Behind It01:56 – Settling In: Lying Down, Letting the Body Fall Heavy02:15 – Guided Physiological Sighs (Three Rounds Together)03:15 – Letting the Breath Go Free: Effortless Rise & Fall04:31 – Planting Today's Truth: The Warm Amber Light04:52 – NSDR Affirmations for Nervous-System Reset (First Pass)06:32 – Staying Off Duty: Nothing to Solve, Nothing to Reach06:41 – Affirmations for Deep Subconscious Integration (Second Pass)08:00 – Reuniting Mind, Body & Soul: You Are Worthy08:27 – 3 Daily Caring Tips for Building an NSDR Habit09:12 – Gently Awakening & Returning to the Room09:47 – Closing Reflection & Notice How You Feel Now09:55 – Outro, Community Support, & Sign-off

With the September 5 opener against Utah Tech now less than two weeks away, KSL Sports BYU Insider Mitch Harper delivers a loaded episode. First up, BYU unveiled a slate of upgrades to LaVell Edwards Stadium that are ready for the 2026 season. The headliner is the new PACS Recruit Lounge located under the east stands — a dedicated space for recruits and their families featuring new seating, food and beverage options, and entertainment areas designed to give BYU's recruiting staff a premium game-day resource. The home locker room also received a full renovation with new lockers, technology, and player amenities, while LaVell's Lounge has been refreshed with an expanded concessions menu, new TVs, décor, and seating. Mitch breaks down what these investments signal about the program's trajectory and how they stack up in the Big 12 facilities arms race. Next, Mitch tackles the big question every Cougar fan is asking: Will No. 14 BYU make the College Football Playoff in 2026? One national pundit is buying into BYU reaching their first Playoff. Also on today's show, Mitch chats with third-year BYU tight ends coach Kevin Gilbride. The 20-year coaching veteran who brings over a decade of NFL experience — including stints with the New York Giants, Chicago Bears, and Carolina Panthers — discusses what he believes could be the best tight end room since he arrived on campus. Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga have been running with the first-team offense in 12-personnel packages throughout camp, and Gilbride talks about the intersection of college football and the NFL, the development of his group, and the role the tight ends will play in Aaron Roderick's offense this season. Mitch then shares his latest practice observations from the final stretch of fall camp as the Cougars close out week three with a "Cougar Stock Exchange," discussing what's trending up and trending down in camp. To close the show, Mitch gives his thoughts on an NFL player, Dae'Quan Wright, expected to join the LSU Tigers after spending the spring and summer with the Cleveland Browns organization. The rebound followed the federal government's resumption of rebates in February 2026, offering up to $5,000 off a battery-electric vehicle and $2,500 off a plug-in hybrid, suggesting incentives still drive adoption.OCTOPUS LAUNCHES NORTH AMERICAN CHARGING APPOctopus Energy has launched Octopus Charge, a free iOS and Android app that lets drivers find, start and pay for public charging at 211,221 chargers across North America via 24 partner networks including ChargePoint, EVgo, Blink, bp pulse and Shell Recharge. The app offers filtering by speed, connector and network, live availability, pricing, an EV route planner and no markup on per-kWh costs, serving as the North American sibling to Octopus Electroverse.CHANGAN PREPARES AUSTRALIAN LAUNCH WITH AVATRChangan is recruiting for a factory-backed Australian operation covering both its mainstream Changan brand and its Huawei- and CATL-backed luxury brand Avatr, with a job advert referencing an "Avatr/Changan sales and service network" but no confirmed models, pricing or launch dates. The group, which sold 2.913 million vehicles globally in 2025, already has an Australian presence through Deepal and the Changan Mazda joint venture, and a right-hand-drive Avatr 07 was photographed testing in Melbourne earlier in 2026.BYD BUILDS MILAN DESIGN STUDIOBYD is building a Milan design studio led by Wolfgang Egger, formerly of Alfa Romeo, Audi and Lamborghini, to conduct European design research and tailor Denza and BYD models to local tastes, materials and fashion-house connections rather than imposing one global design. The move comes as BYD's share of the EU, EFTA and UK market more than doubled to 2.4% in the first half of 2026, matching Tesla's, while its Hungarian Szeged plant has slipped to full vehicle assembly in the fourth quarter of 2026.EINRIDE PLANS 500-TRUCK TESLA SEMI FLEETEinride will buy and deploy 500 Tesla Semis across California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois and Georgia over 24 months from September, the largest publicly announced Semi order and 35% bigger than WattEV's 370-truck deal, fully financed by third parties and serving Amazon and other customers on its Saga AI platform. The order roughly triples Einride's deployed electric fleet and supports a target of converting about $800 million in potential annual recurring revenue, though the company has not disclosed pricing, charging plans or phasing, and Tesla has yet to publish Semi production or delivery figures.HEART FLIES X1 ELECTRIC DEMONSTRATORHeart Aerospace flew its X1 demonstrator on August 12, 2026 at Plattsburgh International Airport, a 27-minute piloted flight to 1,100 feet in what it calls the largest battery-electric aircraft flown to date, weighing over 25,000 pounds, delivering more than one megawatt and using roughly $5 of electricity. X1 is a full-scale representative of the 30-seat hybrid-electric ES-30, targeted for FAA Part 25 certification and service entry in 2031 with flight testing from 2028, and backed by commitments from United Airlines, Air Canada and JSX.ETRUCKER ADDS HGV ROUTE AND FLEET TOOLSThe eTrucker app, founded by Tobias Wagner after driving over 200,000 km in electric HGVs, has added route-break planning using TomTom Truck Routes, fleet pairing via a simple code, charging-card recommendations, pricing categories and time buffers for trailer detachment. As of 1 July 2026 it listed nearly 700 HGV-compatible locations in Germany, split between 154 drive-through sites, 158 where detachment is recommended and 387 requiring it, with Aral Pulse, EnBW, Ionity and Shell Recharge the leading operators.

Lucifer is not Satan. In this week study, we dig into the Hebrew name translated Lucifer in the king James Bible, Helel Ben Shachar. Scholar William Gallagher showed in a peer reviewed paper more than 30 years ago that Helel was the West Semitic (i.e., Hebrew) transliteration of the Akkadian deity Ellil. This entity was known by many names in the ancient Near East, including Dagon, Assur, El, and Milcom (and thus Molech). All of these entities were connected to the underworld whereas Satan is nowhere in the Bible linked to Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, or the abyss. The other clue pointing to Ellil et. al is the fact that this polemic is directed at the king of Babylon. In Hebrew, that's melek bab el, which literally means "King of Babel" or "king of the god-gate." We realize this is a unique take on a famous and well studied chapter of the Bible. But it's consistent with other scriptures, and it's a good reminder to ask ourselves whether our interpretation of scripture is based on the Bible itself or human traditions. Here's the link to the book by David W. Lowe, Deconstructing Lucifer, which shows how our understanding of Satan today is quite different from how the apostles viewed him: https://bit.ly/4cWhW9U Question of the week: Why do some scholars call Judea in the time of Jesus "Palestine"? MUSLIMS ARE planning enclaves that could put self-contained religious communities near Dallas and Houston. Meanwhile, amplifiers broadcast the call to prayer in American cities like Minneapolis, Dearborn and Hamtramck, Michigan, and Paterson, New Jersey. Imams are growing increasingly bold in their statements that their goal is to turn America into a Muslim nation. What most Americans don't realize is that there is no separation of church and state in Islam. The church IS the state, for all intents and purposes. But more than that, this is a spiritual war that the god of Muhammad—who is not to be confused with the triune God of the Bible—intends to win. Here's the link to the article Derek mentioned, "A Call to Power: Islamic Leaders See Ballot Box as Path to Paradise," by Paul Sperry. That fact is also behind a statement issued by the foreign ministers of Turkey, the UAE, Indonesia, Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Jordan. In a joint statement, the ministers objected to Israel's plan to build 3,400 new dwellings in an area east of Jerusalem called E1. They complain that this would separate Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem from the rest of the so-called West Bank, blocking the creation of a future Palestinian state with its capital at Jerusalem. From the Israeli standpoint, that is rather the point. After the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, Israel will not accept an independent Palestinian state on its borders. Further eroding the situation in the Middle East, Turkey has issued an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The Turks are seeking an Interpol red notice for the arrest of Netanyahu as part of a criminal case against him for Israel's interception of an aid flotilla sailing for Gaza back in May. The charges include genocide, crimes against humanity and torture. Well, good luck with that. We also discussed a plan to build data centers around the ring of fire, the volcanically active area around the Pacific Ocean, using geothermal energy to power the centers. Tapping into volcanoes to generate electricity. What can possibly go wrong? Also: Social media is causing an epidemic of mental and spiritual illness, as evidenced by the crowd of women who gathered outside the courthouse in Plymouth, Massachusetts Thursday in support of Lindsay Clancy, who has admitted to killing her three children. Granted, postpartum depression is a real thing. But that doesn't mean Clancy shouldn't be held accountable for what she did.
