Sie sagen, was viele hören wollen. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Piše Andrej Lutman, bereta Lidija Hartman in Bernard Stramič. Prekleta bolezen in prekleta vojna.“

Vsi ti dogodki so nas zaznamovali in nas spreminjali. The same saint baptized their son Vaik in 985, giving him the name of Stephen.Geza had desired to convert the Hungarians to the Catholic faith, a passion shared by Stephen once he reached adulthood and succeeded him in power. After conclusively defeating an alliance of rival pagan nobility, he used their acquired wealth to build a monastery, and invited clergy to convert the people.Stephen established laws favoring Christianity over paganism, and sent an emissary to Rome with a request for the Pope to proclaim him as king. Pope Sylvester II accepted the request, sending him a crown and a gold processional cross, while also giving Stephen certain religious privileges. He showed great diligence as king, while devoting the rest of his time to his religious duties including charity toward the poor and sick, as well as the worship of God and to his household. Gisela, Stephen's wife, was the sister of the ruler later canonized as the Holy Roman Emperor Saint Henry II.Greatly devoted to the Virgin Mary, Stephen had several churches built in her honor both in Hungary and outside the kingdom. Her intercession is credited with preventing a war between Hungary and the Holy Roman Empire under Conrad II, and stopping an assassination plot against Stephen himself. The Hungarian king also established a monastery in Jerusalem, and set up institutions to aid pilgrims in other major cities. Stephen counted saints among his friends and correspondents, and fulfilled the Pope's charge to use his royal authority for the good of the Church.Suffering came to the king, however, when only one of his children survived to adulthood. Stephen's only living son Emeric received a strong Catholic upbringing, and was expected to succeed his father. But Emeric died before Stephen, after a hunting accident in 1031.Emeric was later canonized as a saint in his own right, and Stephen eventually came to rejoice that his son had been permitted to enter God's presence before him. The king's final years, however, were marked by illness as well as a succession dispute among his relatives. In 1038, on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Stephen delivered his final words to leaders of the Church and state, telling them to protect and spread the Catholic faith. To the Virgin Mary, the king directed one of his final prayers: To thee, O Queen of heaven, and to thy guardianship, I commend the holy Church, all the bishops and the clergy, the whole kingdom, its rulers and inhabitants; but before all, I commend my soul to thy care.St. Stephen of Hungary died on Aug. 15, 1038. He was buried alongside his son St. Emeric, and the two were canonized together in 1083. Saint of the Day Copyright CNA, Catholic News Agency

***Content warning: In this episode, we discuss the ways that individuals used harmful and abusive methods in their coaching tactics and their impact on athletes.***   In the explosive second part of this interview with former US national gymnastics team choreographer and long-time Karolyi collaborator Geza Pozsar, all three hosts and guest delve into what the Karolyis reveal about gymnastics culture in communist Europe and the capitalist US. Geza powerfully makes the case that Bela Karolyi's abusive methods were a function of his deficiencies in technical knowledge, for which he overcompensated through overtraining and harsh discipline. Indeed, rather than viewing Bela as representative of Eastern methods, we should understand that he failed to thrive in the communist system. It was only in the US that he was fully embraced thanks to a capitalist preoccupation with winning at all costs. Geza also makes the case that although there has been the scapegoating of particular figures in the horrific scandals of violence and abuse that have rightly haunted US gymnastics in recent years, many other complicit figures have not been held accountable, including the mainstream media itself.   For more on Geza Pozsar, check out Dvora Meyers' terrific piece here. ***Content warning: In this episode, we discuss the ways that individuals used harmful and abusive methods in their coaching tactics and their impact on athletes.*** In the first part of our interview with former choreographer for Béla and Martha Karolyi, the Romanian Communist State, and US national gymnastics team, Geza Pozsar takes us through his experiences living in Romania and working for the famous gymnastics' duo in the 1970s and 198-s. This is the first part of all the history about the Karolyi's and the Communist Romanian sport system that is left out of every Western media portrayal of the coaching duo. Geza explains how Bela's coaching tactics in particular were not representative of the Communist nor Romanian sport system. Rather, their system was much more brutal. Geza does not excuse the Karolyi's methods and condemns them as he has done for the last 10+ years. Importantly, he contextualizes their world and his role in it by recalling the pressure that the Romanian state placed on winning medals in international sport, and also the high stakes involved for coaches if they did not produce Olympic champions in terms of their daily life at home. These conditions, along with Geza's assessment of Bela's limited technical coaching abilities, explain their motivations for defecting to the West to try their hand at coaching careers there. By contextualizing this history for us, Geza moreover confirms the dangerous fallacies in our anti-Communist, pro-American, capitalist narrative of Cold War sport that we have discussed in episodes prior.    For more on Geza Pozsar, check out Dvora Meyers' terrific piece here. When Kansas City businessman Robert McClure Snyder ordered the construction of Ha Ha Tonka Castle, he thought he was building the ultimate vacation home. In a way, he was. Robert spared no expense for his massive home. Construction began in the early 1900s, and at one time, boasted a construction crew of 200 people. But the Ha Ha Tonka dream home ultimately became a nightmare for the Snyder family. Then, Kristin horrifies us with the story of Dr. Geza de Kaplany. Geza felt certain that his wife, Hajna Piller, was cheating on him. He didn’t have any evidence, but that didn’t shake his certainty. So what did Geza do? He loaded up a suitcase with a butcher knife, three bottles of acid, and restraints, and waited for his wife to come home. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “The Acid Doctor,” by David Krajicek The Daily News “Geza gets life, wants to atone,” The Oakland Tribune The book, “Doctors Who Kill: Profiles of Lethal Medics,” by Carol Anne Davis “Mother of DeKaplany’s son called,” Oakland Tribune “State rebuttal — De Kaplany sane,” Oakland Tribune “Dramatic ‘pretty girl’ De Kaplany photo,” Oakland Tribune “De Kaplany shifts to guilty plea,” Oakland Tribune “De Kaplany yells at psychiatrist,” Oakland Tribune “Doctor held after acid scars,” Milwaukee Sentinel “Geza de Kaplany,” wikipedia entry “Slashed bride better,” Associated Press In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “James A. Reed: Legendary Lawyer; Marplot in the United States Senate” by J. Michael Cronan “The tragic story of the mansion and the Snyder family” by Paul Johns, The Christian County Headliner “MOzarks Moments: The senator, the seamstress, the gangster and Ha Ha Tonka” by Paul Johns, Bolivar Herald-Free Press “The Lake on Trial” by Michael Gillespie,http://lakehistory.info
