What does it take to rise from refugee to Olympic medalist? Marathon legend Meb Keflezighi reveals his extraordinary journey from war-torn Eritrea to becoming the only American to win Boston, New York, and an Olympic medal in the marathon.Meb's story begins with a father who walked 225 miles to escape persecution, a family separated for five years, and a young boy who discovered his talent by simply trying to earn an A in PE class. From his surprising 5:20 mile as a seventh-grader to his dramatic silver medal in Athens and unforgettable 2014 Boston Marathon victory, Meb shares the mental strategies, training philosophies, and life perspectives that fueled his historic career. What makes this conversation special is how Meb connects with runners of all abilities. Despite his elite status, he understands the universal challenges we face – bad training days, race disappointments, and the mental battles we fight. When he talks about walking during marathons or falling at the Olympic finish line, we're reminded that greatness isn't about perfection but perseverance. For those preparing for upcoming Disney races, Meb offers practical training advice: space out your runs, keep long runs significantly slower than race pace, and prioritize recovery. His emphasis on balancing quality over quantity provides a refreshing perspective for runners at any level. The podcast also features a spotlight on Megan, who transformed from a back-of-pack runner to discovering new speed at the Panerathon 10K, plus race reports from across the country showing how summer training is leading to fall PRs. In this episode of PivotMe, April dives into one of the sneakiest ways we sabotage ourselves: saying yes after a string of no's. Our brains often trick us into believing we “deserve” a reward after sacrifice—even if that yes derails our goals. April shares how to recognize this moment of weakness, why it happens, and how to build the self-awareness needed to stay aligned with your bigger vision. She emphasizes the importance of being intentional in decision-making, ensuring that every yes or no moves you closer to the life and business you're building. What You'll Learn in This Episode: How your brain uses “rewards” to justify a yes after multiple no's. How to be intentional in decision-making and outsmart your brain. The power of saying the fourth no with the same energy as the first. Why awareness is the first step in stopping sabotage. Quote to Remember: “Your brain will try to trick you into a yes after sacrifice—but the true reward is staying aligned with your goals.” – April Key Takeaway: High performers don't just say no once—they say no consistently, even when their brain is screaming for an easy yes. That consistency is where the magic happens. ______________________________________

When people feel seen, heard, and needed at work, everything shifts. Motivation, performance, retention and well-being all improve. Too often that sense of significance is missing, and the cost to teams and organizations is massive. In this episode, we talk with Zach Mercurio, author of The Power of Mattering, about how leaders can create cultures where people genuinely feel valued. We explore:- The difference between mattering, belonging, and self-esteem- What happens when people feel invisible at work and how to prevent it- The everyday practices leaders can use to help people feel significant - Why in the age of AI, our ability to care for one another will be the most essential skill"Mattering happens through interactions, not through awards, perks or programs. That Anxiety Guy - Straight Talk And Help With Anxiety, Panic and Agoraphobia
Send in a question or comment via text.If you're struggling with anxiety disorders and constantly being told you need a positive mindset, stronger beliefs, and better motivation to recover, this episode is for you. I'm breaking down why these three concepts are tragically misunderstood and misapplied in anxiety recovery—and why they might actually be keeping you stuck. What You'll Learn:Why you can't just "decide" to believe in yourself or adopt a positive mindsetThe counterproductive fantasy that words will change how you think and feelWhy motivation follows action, not the other way aroundHow to work with your current negative beliefs instead of fighting themThe only "mindset" that actually matters in recoveryWhy it's normal (and okay) to doubt yourself and lack motivationEpisode Timestamps:[0:00 - 3:30] Introduction and why belief, mindset, and motivation advice often backfires[3:30 - 6:00] The fantasy that words will fix us and why we want to avoid difficult action[6:00 - 9:30] Where bad advice comes from and why helpers sometimes rely on oversimplified approaches[9:30 - 12:30] Why you can't manufacture beliefs, mindset, or motivation on demand[12:30 - 16:30] The reality: action comes before belief change, not after[16:30 - 19:00] The only mindset that matters: awareness over positivity[19:00 - 23:00] Why it's normal and okay to have negative beliefs and lack motivation[23:00 - 27:00] Challenging helpers who rely on "you just need to want it more"[27:00 - 29:30] Final thoughts and permission to be where you are right nowKey Takeaways:You don't need to wake up believing you're a warrior who can vanquish anxiety. You don't need a positive mindset or perfect motivation. What you need is willingness to take small risks and experiment with new behaviors, even when everything inside you is saying "don't do that." Recovery happens when you act anyway—despite doubt, fear, and negative beliefs.Remember: if you're struggling to "just think positive" or get motivated, that's not a character flaw. You're encountering advice that doesn't match how humans actually change and recover from anxiety disorders. For full show notes on this episode:https://theanxioustruth.com/324Support The Anxious Truth: If you find the podcast helpful and want to support my work, you can buy me a coffee. Saw this post that helped me to wake up - along with my coffee - to remind me that I need to focus in on how I want my day to go!! It's from Kevin DeShazo (@KevinDeShazo) shares this gem: “Your future self will either bear the burden of your inconsistency today, or reap the rewards of your commitment today. You get to choose. Show up on purpose.” This hit me this morning (morning of this recording) and it really changed my perspective of the day for me. I was also listening to “The Daily Coach” podcast - latest episode HERE, where it was shared about the “rule of thirds” which is coming from an Olympic coach and it basically says that during your days of working towards something, you will have a roughly each a third of good days, average days and crappy days. All three of them are to remind you that you are going for something great and to not let whatever day you are having get in the way of success. Especially the crappy days - they are telling you the great thing you are going for, is not supposed to be easy - but it's worth it! I needed that reminder as well this morning. It's my choice as to how I will show up! (and I will show up!!) Thanks for listening. Discipline is easy when things are going well, the real test is when it's inconvenient. In this episode, I'm talking about why true discipline shows up when the situation is tough, when it's not set up for you to win, and when showing up is the hardest thing to do. Motivation feels good, but discipline is about doing the work no matter how you feel. This is the secret sauce to professionalism, and today I'm breaking down how to know if your discipline is real. Show Notes: [01:38]#1 It is not disciplined if it's always easy and is always convenient. [06:14]#2 The reason people respect discipline is because we all inherently understand that it requires acting in the face of inconvenience. [13:45]#3 The reason why most people have no discipline is because they will not act in the face of inconvenience. This week on the Tough Girl Podcast, we welcome Emma Wilkinson—a freelance health journalist, ultra runner, mother of three, and co-author of the empowering book Ultra Women: The Trailblazers Defying Sexism in Sport. Emma's journey into ultra running didn't begin until her 40s, but once she discovered the joy of going long and slow, there was no turning back. In this honest and motivating conversation, Emma shares how she went from half marathons and road running to self-created 100K adventures in the mountains of Snowdonia. Alongside fellow runner and friend Lily Canter, she set out to research and write Ultra Women, a book that celebrates female endurance athletes and dives into the science, stories, and social constructs around women in ultra sport. Emma talks openly about what inspired the book, how she balanced full-time work, parenting, and running while writing it, and what she learned about the unique strengths women bring to endurance challenges—especially around fatigue resistance, pain management, and mental toughness. If you've ever doubted your capabilities, struggled with self-identifying as a “runner,” or wondered if your body was made for ultras—this episode is for you. Emma's message is simple and powerful: don't put limits on yourself—just give it a go. New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Make sure to subscribe so you never miss the inspiring journeys and incredible stories of tough women pushing boundaries. Found a very true statement from one of the best at putting out difference-making posts. Mindful Maven (@mindfulmaven_) shared this one that I found plenty of examples of the second part of the quote (sorry to say): “You'll never be criticized by someone who is doing more than you. You'll always be criticized by someone doing less. Remember that.” ~ Denzel Washington. Those that know how things are done correctly - with class, character, hard work, etc., will usually always encourage rather than criticize. Those that have no character and have a title, have a lot of money, have status, and all that, and they maybe gained it by lying, cheating, stealing, etc., they usually are the ones that criticize (and even make fun of, put others down, etc. I think all of us need to go back to looking to do things in our lives to tilt the playing field back to kindness, encouragement, compassion, etc. Go back to podcast episode #1648 - the Ripple Effect!! Ever created a beautiful 90-day plan only to find it collecting dust by week three? You're not alone. The frustration of abandoned business plans is universal among entrepreneurs, but the solution may surprise you.The failure of your 90-day plan isn't about inadequate strategy or picking the wrong focus areas. The real culprit? A lack of built-in consistency. We've been conditioned to believe that more goals, more projects, and more tasks equal greater success. But this approach creates plans that are impossible to sustain. Without breaking ambitious quarterly goals into manageable daily and weekly components, overwhelm is inevitable. Most business owners rely heavily on motivation to drive execution—a dangerous trap, especially for women juggling multiple responsibilities. Motivation fluctuates based on circumstances, energy levels, and competing priorities. The solution lies in a three-part framework that transforms planning into consistent action. First, simplify by selecting only 1-3 marketing priorities using a "keep-cut-start" audit process. Second, systematize with batching and time blocking techniques that create non-negotiable workflows in your week. Third, establish support mechanisms through accountability partners, community, or coaching to keep you on track when motivation inevitably wanes. As we approach Q4—typically bringing both increased opportunity and potential overwhelm—having these systems becomes even more critical. Your 90-day plan isn't fundamentally flawed; it simply needs the foundation of consistency to transform it from an ambitious document into a lived reality. Take one marketing activity you know you can maintain, schedule it as a recurring time block in your week, and watch how this small step creates momentum toward your larger goals. Ready to finally make your 90-day plan work? Join our Insiders membership where we're building consistency step by step throughout September.Support the show
Ryan Swanson introduces The Cord 2.0, highlighting two big additions—Check‑In Streaks (consistency‑focused medals) and bi‑weekly 3‑minute devotional challenges—and explains why accountability tools are meant to lead us to Jesus, not replace Him as the answer. He also unpacks motivations (relationships, ministry, family) and shows how these secondary motives should funnel us back to Christ as the true source of purity and victory. You'll also hear a refresher on The Cord's core features like daily 1–10 check‑ins, 90‑second video reflections, and the SOS button rooted in Ecclesiastes 4:10 (never alone).Topics DiscussedWhy The Cord exists: daily light and never‑alone accountability (Ecc. 4)How daily 1–10 check‑ins + 90‑sec videos keep it sustainableSOS button: instant “I'm not alone” signaling during temptationThe Cord 2.0 Feature #1 – Check‑In Streaks (consistency over “purity streaks,” with medals at 7/30/100 days and beyond)The Cord 2.0 Feature #2 – Bi‑weekly 3‑minute devotional challenges (trusted preachers; keeps groups Christ‑focused)Motivation vs. the Answer: letting strong motives lead you to Jesus, not replace HimKey TakeawaysAccountability is a means, not the end; Jesus is both the end and the means of purity. The Cord 2.0's Check‑In Streaks reward consistency, closing the “skip‑a‑bad‑day” loophole and keeping daily light on your heart.Short, bi‑weekly devotionals inject life and keep the focus on Christ so groups don't drift into a “dry confessional booth.”The SOS button helps you refuse isolation: you're known, prayed for, and expected to give account—tonight.Ready to download the Cord App? Staying lean isn't about overhauling your entire lifestyle overnight. it's about stacking small, sustainable habits that actually stick. In this episode, we dive into the everyday choices that make the biggest difference when it comes to feeling strong, energetic, and confident year-round. We start by talking about why highly satiating foods are your best friend (especially during those times when hunger seems dialed up) and how minimizing calorie-dense “extras” can keep you feeling satisfied without the crash. From there, we break down the power of a “something over nothing” mentality when it comes to resistance training because it's not about perfection, it's about consistency. You'll also hear why making physical activity a lifestyle is key. Omar shares how Spartan races with his family keep him motivated, I talk about my time riding horses, and we both agree that nothing beats a simple walk. We also unpack the sneaky calories that come from what we drink, why sleep is the real performance enhancer, and how patience and consistency are often the missing ingredients in most fitness journeys. Most importantly, we'll remind you not to obsess over the scale or occasional feelings of heaviness. Progress is much deeper than a number. And when it comes to food, just because it's free doesn't mean you have to eat it. The goal is to choose intentionally, not impulsively. If you've been searching for a realistic, non-extreme approach to staying lean, this episode will give you practical tools and a mindset shift that can last a lifetime. Today, he's living what many would call the ultimate dream: combining his passion for photography and storytelling with his love for music, all while helping to preserve and shape the future visual legacy of one of his favorite bands.Expect to Learn:How to Turn Your Passion into a Life-Changing OpportunityHow to Build a Strong Network That Fuels Your GrowthHow to Take Back Control of Your Time and FocusHow to Stay Committed to Long-Term Success and GrowthHow to Reflect, Adapt, and Evolve for Personal and Professional GrowthSponsors:Thanks to WhiteWall for being our lead sponsor this episode!
