— According to recent figures, back pain has now reached epidemic proportions with millions of people across the globe experiencing severe muscular pain every year. In fact, over 4 million people now search “lower back pain” into Google every month. Most are suffering completely unnecessarily, as the root cause of their pain stems primarily from poor postural habits while performing everyday actions. But help is at hand with Back in Balance, an easy-to-understand practical book designed to help readers discover the cause of their own individual back problem and offer them an effective and lasting solution to their suffering. This essential guide draws on many of the principles of the Alexander Technique, a practical way of releasing muscular tension throughout the body. Helping the reader to discover how their posture and movements may be having a detrimental effect on their health, this guide offers new ways of performing daily activities, with the aim of reducing muscular tension and stress on the bones and joints—and making their lives pain free. The experience of the Alexander Technique actually puts you in touch with your own true essence, an experience that some people may not have had since childhood. It can give us the power to alter our consciousness, which can allow spontaneous gratitude to take the place of negative thinking; since our consciousness has no limits, there is no end to how attentive or appreciative we can be of this amazing existence. The more aware we are, the more alive we will feel and the greater our capacity to enjoy life will be. As the process of change starts to take place, back pain, fear and worry simply evaporate by themselves. Valeria Teles interviews Richard Brennan — the author of “ Back in Balance: Use the Alexander Technique to Combat Neck, Shoulder and Back Pain.”  Richard Brennan has studied the Alexander Technique since 1983 and has been teaching the technique full time for over 30 years he travels extensively internationally giving workshops, talks and interviews about the Technique.  Richard has been featured in numerous newspapers and magazines including The Irish Times, The Sunday Tribune, The Irish Examiner, Cosmopolitan, Hello and Home and Country; he has appeared on television in the UK, Ireland, Croatia and Montenegro he has also been featured on BBC Radios 4 & 5 as well as many local Radio in Europe. He has written eight books on the Alexander Technique, posture and health which have been translated into 22 languages including French Italian, Spanish, Russian, Korean and Hebrew and are on sale world-wide They haves sold over 250,000 and include How to Breathe, Change your Posture – Change your Life and The Alexander Workbook   Richard has been actively campaigning in the UK and Ireland for the removal of backward sloping furniture in schools since 1992 because he has personally discovered that they are often a major cause of poor posture and subsequent back, neck and breathing problems.   Richard lives in Galway, Ireland where he is the director of the Alexander Teacher Training College, Ireland (STAT approved). To tilt the odds in your favour and allow for long term sustainable investment returns.” I could not have said it better! Bio: Richard is a trader, risk manager and fund compliance professional. Dr. Richard Brennan, WHO Emergency Operations, sat down this week with Steve and Professor Leonard Rubenstein, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Rick has been at the very center of urgent efforts, following the Taliban's coming to power in mid-August, to avoid the collapse of Afghanistan's health system, through fast-moving negotiations to bring emergency funding, opening air links, resuming Covid-19, polio, and measles immunization programs, and delivering emergency medical supplies. The political and security complexities to achieving these short-term, emergency stop-gap measures remain formidable, and the space for striking deals exceedingly narrow. How has the Taliban leadership seen things, and how did they agree to these initial measures which have to operate outside their control, a precondition of donors? What is the space in which he and others can find financing solutions that will sustain the health system long-term? Pressures upon WHO Emergency Operations in Afghanistan, combined with demands in Lebanon, Yemen, and Syria, have escalated to levels that greatly exceed capacities. What is to be done now?   Dr. Richard Brennan is Regional Emergency Director, Eastern Mediterranean Region, World Health Organization.

The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: Hamilton's light rail transit project is back on the rails. The city's general issues committee (GIC) voted 9-6 on Wednesday to negotiate a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Metrolinx, regarding a 14 kilometre LRT line from McMaster University to Eastgate Square. City council must still ratify GIC's decision next Wednesday. Another vote will eventually be needed to approve the MOU, once it has been negotiated and presented to councillors. GUEST: Lloyd Ferguson, councillor for Ward 12. GUEST: John Best. President of the Bay Observer. - Annamie Paul held onto her position as leader of the Federal Green Party. Now she is firing back at what she described as a “small group of councillors” who she says were behind a push to dethrone her on Tuesday night.  These councillors, Paul said, tried to “force a vote of non-confidence” on her leadership with “no substantive consultation with the members they represent.” “They produced a list of allegations: allegations that were so racist, so sexist that they were immediately disavowed by both of our MPs as offensive and inflammatory and contrary to party ethics, and I thank our MPs for that,” Paul said. “The plan of this small group of councillors, who are on their way out, did not succeed,” she added. GUEST:  Richard Brennan, Former Journalist with The Toronto Star covering Queen's Park and Parliament Hill - Ontario promised Wednesday to add more protected land to the Greenbelt every time it employs a political tool that fast-tracks land development. Critics warned, however, that the move may signal the Progressive Conservative government's plans to push through new projects without full consultation.  The government said Wednesday it will add two acres of land to the Greenbelt in southern Ontario for every acre of land developed through a minister's zoning order, which give the government power to fast-track development in a given area. The Bill Kelly Show Podcast: The Ontario government is accelerating second COVID-19 doses for people living in hot spot areas where the Delta variant is of concern, and depending on when their first shot was received. Starting at 8 a.m. Monday, people in Toronto, Peel, York, Halton, Waterloo, Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph and Porcupine health units will be eligible for their second shot, if they got their first shot on or before May 9, according to documents released Thursday. As well, anyone in the province who is aged 50 or older, or with high-risk health conditions, can also book a second shot beginning Monday. GUEST: Ryan Imgrund, Biostatistician - Ontario legislators interrupted their summer break to kick off a marathon sitting Thursday as the government prepared to invoke the notwithstanding clause to restore parts of a law that restrict third-party election advertising. A judge struck down sections of the law earlier this week but the Progressive Conservative government said it would restore them through new legislation that includes the clause, which allows legislatures to override portions of the charter for five years. Critics have called the government's move an abuse of power meant to silence opponents ahead of the election. Opposition parties said they'd do their best to stall progress of the new bill, which was introduced Thursday, setting the stage for a lengthy weekend session. GUEST:  Richard Brennan, Former Journalist with The Toronto Star covering Queen's Park and Parliament Hill - The Liberal government's continued signals that it won't drop its legal battles against residential school survivors and First Nations children show that the politicians tasked with handling reconciliation in this country aren't taking it seriously, says one of Canada's most prominent advocates for the welfare of Indigenous children. “I can't make sense of it,” said Cindy Blackstock, executive director of the First Nations Child and Family Caring Society. Blackstock's comments come as members of Parliament voted on Monday to pass a non-binding NDP motion calling for Ottawa to drop its “belligerent and litigious” legal battles against groups affected by Canada's residential school and child welfare systems. The motion also asked the federal government to further investigate the deaths and disappearances of children at the schools. While no one voted against the motion, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau didn't participate in the vote — and members of his cabinet abstained from voting. Some members of the Liberal caucus, and all opposition MPs, supported the motion. The Shrine of Remembrance acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we honour Australian service men and women, and we pay our respects to Elders, past, present and emerging.   Please note that the audio does contain some sound effects of war, protest and discussion around suicide. -- In this podcast, an interview with independent historian Dr. Peter Yule about ‘The Long Shadow: Australia's Vietnam Veterans Since the War’, a book that explores the medical, psychological and health legacies of the Vietnam War on Australia’s veteran community. Vietnam veterans are still our biggest, recognisable veteran cohort, also regarded as today’s ‘keepers of ANZAC’. Peter Yule is a research fellow in the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies at the University of Melbourne. He is interviewed by Megan Spencer, a broadcaster and podcast producer with a particular interest in remembrance and the impact of military service. At almost 700 pages, ‘The Long Shadow’ is a broad, detailed and compelling study of the specific and unique experiences faced by Vietnam veterans involved in Australia’s most socially and politically divisive overseas war to date - and its very human cost. In researching and writing the book, Peter says that the only stipulation given to him editorially “was to make sure the voice of the veterans was heard”. It includes powerful insights from Vietnam veterans, their family members, medical experts, veteran advocates and others. As one reviewer wrote, ‘The Long Shadow’ addresses “deficiencies of past studies’ failure to engage with the lived experience of veterans”. ‘The Long Shadow’ was commissioned by the Australian War Memorial and is published by New South Publishing. It was published on the 1st of November, 2020. But the agreement won’t ease pressure on the government to get vaccines into Canada because it won’t start delivering until late next fall. GUEST: Dr. Lori Turnbull, Director of the School of Public Administration at Dalhousie University - Vaccine supply delays mean Ontario won’t meet its goal of giving all nursing-home residents the first dose of a COVID-19 shot by Friday. The government said Tuesday that all long-term care, high-risk retirement and First Nations elder care home residents will now receive their first dose by Feb. 10. It also said the shortage of shots mean some vaccination sites are sitting idle. GUEST:  Richard Brennan, retired journalist with the Toronto Star.
