Sam and Emma are joined by Rachel Cohen, lawyer formerly of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, to discuss the country's largest law firms bending the knee to Donald Trump. First, they run through updates on today's elections in Wisconsin and Florida, Trump's attack on the US public health regime, tomorrow's tariff deadline, the Senate GOP's budgetary sleight of hand, legal pushback to Trump over voting restrictions and his reclassification of protected Venezuelan migrants, Trump's ongoing renditioning of Latin Americans to an El Salvadorian gulag, the mobilization of far-right militia's to protect Musk's businesses, Trump's targeting of Harvard, Cory Booker's filibuster, and dwindling Canadian tourism to the US, also watching Jesse Watters explain exactly why he (and the rest of the right) doesn't care about due process. Rachel Cohen then dives Trump's successful effort to cow some of the biggest law firms in the US – including her former firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom – unpacking precisely what makes these law firms so “important” to Trump (wealthy clients, billions in profits), and the intimate relationship they have with the political elite, before walking through the actual contents of Trump's threats to these firms' contracts and access to federal buildings (e.g. courts), and why, unlike others, Skadden seemed to capitulate without even facing an Executive Order, including handing over $100m in pro-bono work to the administration. Expanding on this latter element, Cohen tackles the Trump Administration's underlying aims for this authoritarian push against these attorneys elite, with the push against DEI policies, the takeover of pro-bono work, and the Executive Orders chilling pushback to Trump's anti-migrant and anti-trans agenda coming at a time where he and his goons are undercutting due process for migrants and criminalizing trans identity. After touching on the mix of hubris and cowardice driving the executive capitulation in the world of corporate law, and what the internal pushback looks like among Cohen's peers, Rachel, Sam, and Emma wrap up by reemphasizing the real goal of Trump's project – a fascist takeover – and the importance of organized dissent. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma talk with Ronald Raygun about the precarious state of immigration law, dissect Elon Musk's blatant and manipulative lies about Social Security fraud, and watch as Sen. Bill Cassidy accidentally gets blunt about the GOP's plan to gut Medicare. Mike Lindell teases a run for the Governorship of Minnesota, and the MR Team dives deep into Ezra Klein's poor response to anti-Oligarchical critiques of his “Abundance” doctrine, plus, your calls and IMs! It's News Day Tuesday! Sam & Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Elon Musk's attacks on US federal workers, Mike Johnson's determination to cut Medicaid, an impending GOP-led government shutdown, dropping consumer sentiment, FDA actions to undo Musk & DOGE dumbassery, Blackwater's private ICE posse, DoorDash's millions in theft, Trump's attacks on whistleblower protections, the VA, and Trump's support for Russia, before basking in the beauty of Missouri Rep Mark Alford's obsequious support for the Musk/Trump regime getting drowned out by countless enraged constituents (despite Alford's unsurprising and unsubstantiated claims of outside agitators). After expanding on the need for Democrats to hold the line in refusing Trump's absurd power grabs and the GOP's disastrous budget plans – and how to call your representative to make sure they stay strong – Sam and Emma dive deep into the GOP's ongoing push to make devastating and extensive cuts to Medicaid, dissecting how this move targets the victims of the supposed “waste, fraud, and abuse” Mike Johnson and Co claim to be going after, and watch former NJ Rep Tom Malinowski obliterate Kevin O'Leary's ridiculous claim that Elon and Trump are completing the first audit of the US government in years. Wrapping up, they touch on David Dayen's recent piece “The Coup Has Failed,” and why we should find hope in the US public's overwhelming pushback to Trump's attempts to consolidate his power and punish his enemies. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma answer some of your questions about Ukraine, unpack the Trump/Musk regime's devastating impact on the US economy, explore the extensive reach of Trump's attack on federal workers, and talk with Cal from Rochester about the pre- and post-ACA Medicaid experience. Ronald Raygun expands the conversation on Russia and Ukraine, Max from South Carolina tackles SC's devastating GOP trifecta, the US government comes for queer people's IDs, and Milo Yiannopolis (or, perhaps, Jake from Dallas) shares some thoughts with the show. PBD goes to bat for his potential comrade-in-coups Jair Bolsonaro, and Nicholas from Michigan adds to the Medicaid experience, plus, your calls and IMs! It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on Trump's illegal freezing of government funds, firing of an NLRB commissioner, mass ICE raids, Hegseth's confirmation, Bird Flu, the gutting of consumer protections, Trump's DOJ, labor action among Whole Foods and Delta, Trump's ban order on trans people in the military, the return of Palestinians to North Gaza, and the implosion of AI-adjacent Tech Stocks amid the release of Chinese AI tech DeepSeek, also unpacking Lindsay Graham's predictably slimy response to Trump's improper firing of myriad Inspectors General. After diving a little deeper into the drama behind the emergence of DeepSeek, a drastically cheaper and more efficient LLM AI technology out of China, Sam and Emma shift to Trump's sweeping order to completely freeze all Congressionally-ordered federal funding, parsing through the devastating and overarching impact this order will have on the American public and any federally-funded organizations and Trump's active targeting of the Impoundment Control Act of 1974 in an attempt to legitimize this maneuver, as they explore the rapid initiation of the Project 2025 assault on (and “traumatization of” to quote the OMB head) federal workers. They also expand on Trump's recent firing of the third NLRB board member, effectively barring them from taking actions until a new one is confirmed, the emergence of various public health threats in the wake of Trump's killing of any federal public health communications, and wrap up with a killer Kickstarter project without a world without billionaires. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch notorious immigration expert… uh… Dr. Phill engage in a ride-along raid with ICE, and dive deep into Trump's overwhelming anti-immigration orders and the utter dearth of any productive opposition from Democrats with some help from Ronald Raygun. Kyle from Columbus unpacks the Big Tech freakout over China's DeepSeek AI, Josh from Bushwick unpacks the absurdity of charging for public transit, and Jim from Portland highlights his ongoing Kickstarter campaign for an anti-billionaire graphic novel. The MR Team also unpacks developments around RFK Jr.'s impending confirmation hearing, plus, your calls and IMs! Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Richard Seymour, writer & commentator based in London, to discuss his recent book Disaster Nationalism: The Downfall of Liberal Civilization. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the still-burning LA Fires, the GOP's tie of California aid to Trump's debt ceiling raise, the second Trump Administration, the Laken Riley Act, the TikTok ban, Jack Smith's resignation, and Biden's immigration move, before touching on the Democratic Party's continuing inability to act like an opposition party with just seven days to Trump's inauguration, and watching GOP Senator John Barrasso put the right's inhumanity on full display over the ongoing devastation in California. Richard Seymore then joins, diving right into his idea of “Disaster Nationalism” as a type of proto-fascism that seeks to take the ever-increasing frequency of real-world disasters with often abstract causes (climate change, inequality, etc) and tie them to singular, concrete perpetrators, frequently represented by ethnic and political minorities, tackling examples out of Oregon in the wake of the 2020 wildfires and Gujarat following the 2002 train burning – with the latter providing a particularly gruesome lens into Disaster Nationalism's emphasis on extreme ethnic violence as a key selling point, as it provides an outlet for pent-up anxiety rather than a solution to its real causes. After expanding on Disaster Nationalism's complex relationship to democracy (as a tool) and dedication to capitalism, Seymore walks Sam and Emma through the centrally motivating role of economic anxiety in this equation, tackling its distinction to general economic deprivation in its emphasis on loss and social status, looking at how the hyper-individualism of neoliberalism exacerbates socio-economic inequality while blaming those on the losing end for their situation, cultivating a sadistic culture of pseudo-meritocracy that craves social distinction, something threatened by any attempt to deconstruct the dominant hierarchies. After touching on the particular display of Disaster Nationalism developing in Israel's ongoing genocide of Gaza, Richard, Sam, and Emma then look at the role of the left in combatting these pressures, tackling the history of trade unions in leading the fight against fascism, and the importance of organizing when it comes to finding agency, empowerment, and community in the face of systems that want you to have anything but. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Hasan Piker's pressing interviews with LA's incarcerated firefighters, Newsmax's Rob Finnerty pins the fires on the donkey (Dems… and DEI), and Leninade unpacks the unfounded argument that any city could've contained the climate devastation facing LA right now. Ronald Raygun explores how the criminal justice and immigration systems work together (and against each other) to make this world worse for immigrants (particularly with the incoming Laken Riley Act), Alex from New York discusses climate change and California, and Joe Rogan continues his work as butler to the billionaires as he brings on Zuckerberg to platform his agenda (and his aggrievement), plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Kyle Kulinski, co-host of the Kyle Kulinski Show & Krystal Kyle and Friends, to round up the week in news. First, Emma runs through updates on growing famine in Gaza as winter nears, Israel's land grab in Syria, Trump's threat to Iran, Trump's advisors, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Pelosi's undermining of AOC's Oversight committee bid, RFK's newest vaccine objection (polio), Trump's banking deregulation agenda, and Macron's newest centrist PM, before watching Peter Thiel sputter through a defense of the US healthcare system and the (former) UnitedHealthcare CEO. Kyle Kulinski then joins as he reflects on Nancy Mace's complex and intersectional relationship with the bathroom, Democrats' willingness to capitulate to and embrace Trump's fascist scapegoating of trans people and immigrants, and the importance of actually acknowledging your constituents' issues in winning elections. Kyle and Emma also tackle the absurd narrative about Trump and the GOP's right-wing populism, parsing particularly through the facade of Trump's anti-war persona before touching on the pseudo-populism of RFK's relationship with Big Pharma. Wrapping up, they unpack the state of “independent” media, the growing embrace of far-right lunacy as long as it comes with a billionaire's backing, and the need for the Democratic party to look left for success. And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the tension around the humanitarian crisis in the US-backed Al-Hol detention center in Syria with Owen from LA, The Letterhack previews his show with Ronald Raygun tonight, and Juliet from Portland gives Emma a lesson in AGP. The MR Crew also covers the arrest of a Lakeland, Florida woman over saying “Delay, Deny, Depose. You people are next” after being denied healthcare and Sen. Blumenthall's Musk suckup, also talking with Jackson in Colorado about media comprehension in the US. They also watch Daniel Penny aptly thank the fact that “someone” didn't get hurt in his killing of Jordan Neely, and touch on the TYT's floundering attempts to pivot right, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Hump Day! Emma speaks with Ettingermentum of the "Ettingermentum Newsletter" on SubStack to discuss the results of the 2024 election. First, Emma runs through the big updates on Trump's victory in the Presidential election, the GOP's taking of the Senate (and likely keeping the House), exit polls, the success and failure of various abortion referendums, and California's tough-on-crime referendum, before expanding on their personal reflections on the GOP's overwhelming victory yesterday. Ettingermentum then joins, as he and Emma where their polling predictions went wrong, also unpacking why Dems learned all of the wrong lessons from their success in the 2022 midterms – particularly in terms of interpreting it as an explicit endorsement of the Biden Administration – and the complete failure of Democrats and Kamala Harris to set forth an alternative vision to the GOP's demagogic fascism and Biden's lethargic liberalism. After briefly touching on the legitimacy of the “Shy” Trump voter, and parsing through the lessons on campaign ground game, Josh and Emma look at the parallels between Obama and Trump's victories – particularly in terms of turning out disengaged voters – and dive deep into what the future of the progressive project will look like under Trump. And in the Fun Half: After expanding on the Right's sweeping victory in yesterday's elections, Emma and the MR Team talk with Kimmy from Kentucky about moving forward as a red-state single mother and the importance of community organizing – both materially and spiritually – and Ronald Raygun shares his reflections on Trump's victory. They also unpack the “lessons” that could be learned, Valerie from Arizona shares some personal messages and a hypothesis, and Blake from Nashville tackles party politics. The far more censored version of the award-winning and unparalleled "A Mediocre Time with Tom and Dan." - "A Corporate Time" is a daily companion and terrestrial radio show heard nationally on iHeartRadio. It's silly.
It's Newsday Tuesday! Sam and Emma are back from the long weekend to break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the final three weeks of the election cycle, Israel's continuing war crimes and genocide, Blinken's supposed demands for Israel, Trump's string of unhinged campaign fiascos, Harris' outreach to conservatives, Senate polling, India's extralegal murder campaign in Canada, and FEMA response, before parsing through JD Vance's continued inability to answer a question (even poorly!) about the validity of the 2020 election results. Next, they dive deeper into the genuine insanity of Trump's recent mishaps on the campaign trail, exploring the horrid conditions of his venues, his recent decision to dance (?) instead of taking questions with Kristi Noem (as planned), and his stranding of supporters *FOR HOURS* after cutting short of an event outside of Coachella. They also watch Trump's attempt to defend his wildly unpopular tariff platform to Maria Bartiromo before diving deep into his militant ideas for dealing with the “threat” of the “people from within” that is American leftists and listening to Glenn Youngkin struggle to make those statements out to be anything other than the pure, unfettered fascism that they are. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma's budding tensions with caller John from San Antonio grow as he unpacks his takes on polling info and the state of the Harris campaign, Russell Brand takes on those damn evil energies produced by Wifi or something, and Nancy Pelosi once again asks the Dem base not to believe their lying eyes as she attempts to preemptively shirk blame for a loss onto voters. Ronald Raygun discusses the genuine problem of Democrats' (and Harris') decision to let the right define the discourse around immigration and crime, Mopin from West Virginia asks about non-mainstream media coverage of Israel's genocide in Gaza, and a listener from SF explores the non-moral arguments against US support for Israel's genocide. It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam and Emma speak with David Dayen, executive editor at The American Prospect, to discuss some of his recent writing and reporting on pricing. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel sinking any ceasefire negotiations, Indian elections, the Epoch Times' money laundering operation, ProPublica report on Trump's “bonuses” sent to potential witnesses, Biden's new outrageous (and illegal) asylum policy, the anti-progressive and inept NY State Democratic Party, primaries, wage inequality, and landlord price fixing, also diving into the outrageous attacks on Jamaal Bowman from New York's AIPAC “Democrats.” David Dayen then joins, diving right into The American Prospect's ongoing project on the reality of pricing in the US, with recent reports (and a lawsuit) exposing the major role of price fixing in the US economy, exploring how the consolidation of market power, technological (and more-specifically algorithmic) developments, and the various economic and social crisis of COVID-19 have allowed corporations to develop myriad ways to use individual variables (from habits to current phone life) to maximize their revenue in individual sales. After briefly touching on the existing federal statutes around price discrimination, and the major role algorithms and technological evolution play in obfuscating the decision-making process around pricing, Dayen parses through the ongoing fight within the Biden Administration over this issue of financial discrimination, including the advancement of various lawsuits. Wrapping up, David tackles why any potential legislative or administrative developments remain in a precarious position with a possible Trump Administration 2.0, and Sam and Emma look to the GOP's ongoing attempt to reshape the narrative around Trump's conviction. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Anthony Fauci completely pull the football out from under countless attempted “gotchas” from the GOP, Ian from Florida talks coffee and voting, and Clint from Washington dives into inter-generational politics. Dave Rubin attempts to convince Russell Brand that he's one of those bad-ass anti-vaxxers and himself that he's not afraid of Sam, Ronald Raygun has an idea to bring a little more “party” to the forefront of Majority Report's “all-business” style, and Donald Trump muses about climate change, nuclear proliferation, and how he'll top Biden's border fascism. Tim Pool continues to struggle with his fascist guests who keep endorsing violence, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with writer and labor organizer Mindy Isser to discuss her recent piece in In These Times entitled "In Labor's Mission to Organize the South, Another Domino Could Soon Fall." Then, he speaks with Anna Clark, reporter at ProPublica covering issues in the MidWest, to discuss her recent reporting on the Flint water crisis, 10 years later. First, Sam runs through updates on Biden's continuing arms sales to Israel, Israel's goal of settling the Gaza Strip, Michael Cohen's star turn, US inflation rates, climate change, Maryland's primaries, Trump's corruption, Rudy Giuliani, suits against major corporations, and the 2024 Presidential Debates, also diving into appearances from Vivek Ramaswamy and Mike Johnson at the Trump Trials, featuring some live translation during the latter's speech. Mindy Isser then jumps right into the South's long history of anti-union sentiment and politics, looking at the statistics behind the South's union dearth, and the major driving forces of racism and anti-communism that have shaped the elite-driven attack on organized labor from the Congress of Industrial Organizations' (CIO) “Operation Dixie” in the 1940s through the UAW's ongoing expansion attempt today. After expanding on the role race has played in the recent union-busting attempts at the Vance, Alabama Mercedes plan, Sam and Mindy discuss the recent NLRB ruling that established a system card check lite, and how southern politicians are pushing back against it, before parsing more specifically through what the UAW's success organizing the Chattanooga VW plant meant for a union renaissance in the South, and the hope that remains strong heading into the Vance Mercedes plant vote tally. Next, Anna Clark joins, first walking through the now infamous story of Flint, Michigan's water crisis, which began one decade ago this spring with the horrendously executed switch off of Detroit's Lake Huron water supply, followed by a tremendous display and unaccountability and incompetence from the political leadership of Flint appointed by Governor Snyder. After expanding on the devastating health effects faced by the consumers of Flint's toxic water supply (including a two-year outbreak of legionnaires disease), and the lack of transparency in the face of crisis, Clark looks to the attempts at finding justice for the people of Flint, tackling the state of an ongoing class action lawsuit before wrapping up with the failure of various criminal proceedings, and how Flint is still holding out hope for accountability. And in the Fun Half: Sam talks with Kowalski from Nebraska about getting more votes in a 2024 Nebraska Republican primary than Nikki Haley, and why his stance on immigration (among others) worked in his (albeit brief) campaign, Marjorie Taylor Greene's beef with Mike Johnson continues to stew, and Charlie from the North East has an expansive conversation on gun control. The Biden Administration continues their genocide denial, Tim from Boston has a podcast rec, and Eric Adams has a totally-not-racist idea to solve NYC's lifeguard shortage. Sam from Baltimore discusses his perspective on Maryland's David Trone, and Ronald Raygun challenges Sam on the wokification of comedy. Jordan Peterson continues to be a shameless well of content, plus, your calls and IMs! It's News Day Tuesday! But first, Sam and Emma speak with Matt Duss, executive vice president at the Center for International Policy, to discuss the events of the past weekend involving Iran & Israel. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump's legal woes, Israel's ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the New York Times' anti-Palestinian bias, the House GOP's conflicted agenda, DOJ anti-trust, and SCOTUS' recent attack on protest, before exploring reports on how Trump's hush money case is devastatingly interfering in his personal life. Matt Duss then joins, first parsing through the context for Iran's retaliation against Israel, including the consistent communication between Iran and the US, and clear intent from Iran to deescalate in the wake of their attack on Israeli military facilities, before touching on the conflict between the genuine threat of rising tensions in the region and the understanding that this response could have been much worse. After briefly touching on the role that this Iran-Israel affair plays in Bibi Netanyahu's attempt to cling to power (and Israel's attempt to maintain international legitimacy), they shift to the US perspective, exploring the complete failure of Biden's approach to Israel's genocidal and offensive campaign, and what it has done to undermine his ability to reestablish (or even maintain) an international rules-based order. Sam and Emma wrap up the first half by diving into the ongoing attempt by the House to reauthorize FISA's expansion of the surveillance state. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Mike Johnson maintain a brave facade in the face of his party's insanity, chat with a Tesla worker, and watch Clay Travis and Buck Sexton walk through their plan to get Trump off (of his criminal charges). Annie Fitzgerald calls in to discuss her campaign for State House in Washington's 38th District, Matthew from Oregon on the hypocrisy of Israel's rhetoric, and John Hagee reiterates Christian Theocrats' support for Israel. Aaron Rodgers goes full conspiracy brain in an honest vocalization of why someone would support RFK, and Ronald Raygun asks some important questions about David Pakman's role in things, plus, your calls and IMs! It's a Casual Friday all calls and all clips edition! Sam, Emma and the MR Crew break down the biggest stories of the week. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the opening of the Erez crossing for aid to Gaza, the US economy, Biden's student debt relief, Trump v. Tish James, and immigration policy, before parsing through More Perfect Union's leaks about major union-busting practices at Mercedes' Alabama plant ahead of a major UAW unionization vote. Next, Sam and Emma look at the recent evolutions in US policy toward Israel's genocide in Gaza, with Blinken revealing that Biden HAS, in fact, had the leverage to force Netanyahu and Israel's hand with aid, as well as using the phrase “immediate ceasefire” (whatever that means to them), before tackling the recent report on Israel's AI-facilitated “Where's Daddy?” program used to target the spouses and children of their military targets, and watching Senator Coons come forward on conditioning aid to Israel. They also talk with Rick from San Francisco about the Affordable Connectivity Program, Scott from Monterey absolutely dismantles Sam's anti-libertarian hypothetical, and Gary explores the concept of a 2024 Kamala Harris candidacy. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss Crowder's potential unfair labor practices case, Nancy Mace beefs with Maria Bartiromo over Kevin McCarthy, and Rosanne Barr offers some quick wisdom for young women (it's just blood libel). Bro Flamingo questions the reappearance of Hillary ahead of the 2024 elections, Dave from Haverhill blue-balls Sam, and Lara Trump offers up some sweet MyPillow talk. RFK defends his spoiler candidacy, PBD and co. have a pitch for Candace Owens, and Ronald Raygun puts on his rose-colored glasses for MR's 20th anniversary, plus, your calls and IMs! It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with journalist Katya Schwenk, to discuss her recent reporting on Boeing published in The Lever. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Blinken's visit to the Middle East, Amnesty International's report on Israel's murders in the West Bank, the dearth of evidence of actual UNRWA involvement in October 7th, Michigan Democrats' action against Biden's Gaza policy, the GOP's immigration bill fiasco, the Mayorkas impeachment, Harlan Crow's suspect finances, college student unions, and another corrupt funder of Eric Adams' mayoral campaign, also parsing through Mayor Abdullah Hammoud of Dearborn, Michigan's statements on voters' and Arab-Americans' issues with Joe Biden. Katya Schwenk then joins, diving right into the most recent Boeing scandal, kicking off this January when the door panel blew out in an Alaska Airlines flight over Portland, and how it put the spotlight back on Boeing's string of fatal crashes at the end of the 2010s, before briefly touching on the (nonexistent) role DEI played in these malfunctioning. Stepping back, Schwenk dives into Boeing's launch of a new Max 737 in 2018 despite internal awareness of various software issues, the company's skirting of certain federal regulations, and their eventual (minimal) fraud charges from Trump's DOJ during his final weeks in office, also exploring the DOJ's eventual agreement to drop charges if the company met compliance over the next three years – a period that ended just two days after the recent Alaska Airlines emergency landing. Expanding on this, Katya looks at the reassessment of this deal between Boeing and the US Government, and whether the obvious continuation of Boeing's unregulated production issues will be called into question, or if the US will continue to allow a major US company to skirt regulation, before wrapping up, by walking Sam and Emma through the major financial success of Boeing. Sam and Emma also dive into the collapse of Biden's immigration deal with the GOP, and parse through each side of the bipartisan opposition to the Biden Administration's “Trump-Era policy.” And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Dave Rubin use racism to back his racism, Tim from Chicago shines a light on a MAJOR blind spot heading into the 2024 election, and a Syrian student from Germany explores the major issues with the monolithic representation of Islamist movements in Western media. Ronald Raygun provides great commentary on Biden's ongoing immigration deal fiasco, plus, your calls and IMs! It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel expanding their invasion to Southern Gaza, US funding for Israel and Ukraine, conditioning aid to Israel, the US' various showy legislative bills, Bob Menendez's gold bar problem, CalState labor action, and Georgia's institutionalized disenfranchisement, before parsing through the GOP's continued attempt to keep the “Biden Crime Family” story in the media, without adding any new (or relevant) information. Next, they parse through the appearance of Josh Paul, the State Department official who resigned over stifled dissent around US support for Israel, on CNN, and the unsurprising revelations about Palestinian treatment in IDF captivity. They also watch a plea from a UNICEF worker to acknowledge the humanity of Palestinian children, and Israel's horrors force even Jake Tapper to begin questioning their collective punishment. And in the Fun Half: Donald Trump appears with Moms for America, Ben Shapiro accidentally calls God an incrementalist after doing a moral relativism, and Lek from Massapequa gives his take on yesterday's interview. Jack from Colorado dives into the faux-intellectualism of the right wing, Oscar from DC discusses Univision-Trump collusion, and Ronald Raygun explores how he duped Dennis Prager. It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. After a reflection on Sam's birthday (today!) and the anniversary of Mike Cernovich's attempted cancellation of Sam, he and Emma take a look at a report, first seen on an Israeli public broadcast then translated by the Times of Israel, that Prime Minister Netanyahu appealed to members of the Likud Party that, basically, he has no allegiance to President Biden and will do whatever he wants when it comes to Gaza. Wonder how folks in the Biden administration feel about that! Then, they break down Moore v. United States, a case the Supreme Court will hear in the next few weeks that would essentially, before it'd even have a chance to become government policy, foreclose the possibility of a wealth tax in this country. After, they touch on a report from the Seattle Times on local Macy's worker walking off the job for better pay but (surprise!) also due to fears for their safety because the business they work for isn't interested in actually creating a safe working environment free from threats of shoplifting and other issues retail workers have to face on a daily basis (and we thought business owners cared about crime!) And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma check in on the tuxedoed former Speaker, Kevin McCarthy, at a debate with the Oxford Union where he, and stop me if you've heard this before, ahistorically claims that the U.S. has NEVER asked for land during an armed conflict (wonder why they never asked)! Then, they check in on UAW president Shawn Fain, already making plans for huge labor organizing efforts in May Day of 2028, 6 months before the next presidential election and coinciding with when the UAW's next contract runs out. Sam, Emma, and the MR Crew then check in on Biden's approval ratings surrounding the economy (not good!) and what, if anything, he can do to improve on those poll numbers (maybe...run on something? Anything?) And FINALLY, courtesy of Ronald Raygun, Sam gets a very special birthday present: the opportunity to appear LIVE on Dennis Prager's show! Plus, your calls & IM's! Happy Monday! The whole MR Crew is back! Sam and Emma speak with James Tabery, professor in Philosophy at the University of Utah, to discuss his recent book Tyranny of the Gene: Personalized Medicine and Its Threat to Public Health. First, Sam runs through updates on a US deal with Iran, the House GOP's impending government shutdown, Drew Barrymore officially un-resuming her show (making Bill Maher the biggest SAG Scab), and progressive action in the US, before diving into the UAW's ongoing strike and the unconditional support coming in from the White House. James Tabery then joins, diving right into his personal experience working with and within the Personalized Medicine industry, and seeing how it can (with great expense) help patients, before stepping back to analyze the greater history of precision (personal) and genomic medicine over the last three decades, with the evolution of the Human Genome Project, and the rise of Human Genome Institute figurehead Francis Collins to the director of the National Health Institute. Briefly, he then discusses Obama's Precision Medicine Initiative. Professor Tabery then walks Sam and Emma through the complicated drive behind the personalized medicine movement, with real believers (like Collins) used as lynchpins by the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical industries that would profit from a hyper-individualized and cure-based philosophy to medicine over a preventative and environmental-based one, before looking at how this has also resulted in a politicization of environmental considerations in medicine, and why – despite existing proof of environmental contributions to countless health issues – the US healthcare system remains far behind researching and addressing these problems. Wrapping up, Professor Tobery parses through the influence of this debate when it comes to research on race-based genomes for issues that could likely result from environmental factors. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch the Auto Industry leadership attempt to undermine UAW after the union essentially kept the industry alive in the wake of the 2008 Financial Crisis, also expanding on Biden's support for the UAW and the inverse being expressed by GOP Presidential hopefuls. It's Casual Friday! Sam is joined by Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com and proprietor of the blog Hullabaloo, to round up the week in news. Then, he is joined by MR alum extraordinaire Jamie Peck to discuss what exciting things she has coming up. And THEN, he's joined by Matthew Film Guy! First, Sam runs through updates on Donald Trump's Georgia case and the GOP's case against Fani Willis, Mitch McConnell's return to the Senate, national union action, the end of another COVID support program, and the Texas Supreme Court upholding a ban on trans-affirming care for minors, before watching UAW President Shawn Fain rail against the “policy failure” that is the existence of billionaires. Heather Parton then joins as she and Sam work through the Georgia GOP's ongoing attempt to impeach Fulton County DA Fani Willis, Governor Brian Kemp's rejection of that, and why that might not help back the radicals down. Expanding on the far-right's role in the legislature, they then tackle Kevin McCarthy's ongoing debacle as he attempts to give his colleagues a baseless impeachment against Biden in exchange for NOT shutting down the entire government, and why they still want both, before quickly running through the NLRB's massive decision in a case against Cemex. They wrap up by more broadly assessing the state of Joe Biden and his administration heading into the 2024 election. Jamie Peck then dives into the upcoming debut of her variety show “The Woke Mob” with Jake Flores, this Saturday in New York, before parsing through the ongoing organizing and protest against Atlanta's Cop City, what Cop City is, and why – despite massive public disapproval for the project and over 100k signatures for a referendum – the Atlanta City Council is taking every chance to undermine attempts to stop the project. Matthew Film guy helps wrap up the program as he and Sam discuss the recent gift-giving debacle involving Ronald Raygun, the ongoing WGA-SAG strike, and gives his recommendations of the book-turned-movie Dogs of War and Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Wild Pear Tree. And in the Fun Half: Sam covers Tucker's flailing pivot to ‘X' and strong relationship with Hungary, Ed from Seattle discusses yesterday's interview's portion on Hannah Arendt, and Jack from Cleveland platforms Rudy Giuliani's legal fund. Michael in Miami expands the conversation on Rudy's troubles, plus, your calls and IMs! Happy Juneteenth! Sam and Emma speak to Imani Perry, professor of African-American Studies at Princeton University, author of South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation, to discuss the history and legacy of Juneteenth, as well as the importance of its becoming a federal holiday. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the DOJ's refusal to investigate 1/6, an impending government shutdown, the pace of global warming, Texas labor protections, and the rising flames of the Gas stove debate, also watching Charlie Kirk denounce the “segregationist holiday” of Juneteenth. Professor Imani Perry then dives into the background of what Juneteenth is, the importance of a celebration that understands the long processes of manumission and civil rights, and explores the holiday's similarly long journey from a local celebration to a federal holiday. Stepping back, Professor Perry walks Sam and Emma through the modern significance of Juneteenth amidst a consistent push toward an ahistorical lost cause ideology, and the necessity of using this day to educate and get people to readdress the practice of Democracy, before they wrap up by tackling the role of capitalism and neoliberal precarity in keeping white supremacy alive and well in the US' working class. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Conservatives' sudden pivot to gas stove policy, Jesse Watters' genuinely inhumane comments about homelessness, and why the sudden conservative pivot towards homophobia is completely unsurprising and, in fact, completely representative of the GOP's entire strategy. They also dive into Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s appearance on Joe Rogan, parsing through the misinformation about ivermectin and vaccines, and discussing the fundamental problem with a “pharma-skeptical” stance that doesn't actually question the structure of big pharma. NYC Driver calls in to expand on Rogan's history with the wellness industry, Spencer from LA discusses the relationship between religion and progressive politics, and Ronald Raygun dives into the parallels between religious cults and the tactics of the wellness industry, plus, your call and IMs! It's an extra special News Day Tuesday as Sam and Emma are on Trump INDICTMENT WATCH. Then they're joined by John Nichols, national affairs correspondent for The Nation, to discuss Tuesday's Wisconsin State Supreme Court race. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on far-right legislation advancing in Tennessee, Florida, and Mississippi, Finland's introduction to NATO, Elon's court order, and Bernie's endorsement of Brandon Johnson for Chicago Mayor, before diving into the coverage of Donald Trump's impending arraignment, featuring Alan Dershowitz live with Sean Spicer. John Nichols then joins and he and Sam immediately jump back to 2010, to reflect on the hijacking of Wisconsin's political system by the Koch-funded right wing, coming to fruition with the election of Scott Walker in 2010, and seeing a mass gutting of labor rights, voting rights, and general political engagement. Next, Emma, John, and Sam parse through the consequences of this era, with the US' worst case of gerrymandering cementing GOP control for the next decade, despite Democrats sweeping in state-wide races, leaving the only viable route back to democracy through the judiciary. This brings them to today's special elections in Wisconsin, with the state's Supreme Court and Senate both featuring massive races for the future of Wisconsin's democracy. After looking at the issues that are central to Wisconsin's special election, Nichols shifts to Chicago, walking through Brandon Johnson's race against Paul Vallas, Vallas' courting of the right wing, and the impact a Johnson victory could have on the progressive movement nationwide. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Tucker clamor to make New York look worse today than it was under conservative control (it's not), talk philosophy with Ronald Raygun, and explore the mass financialization of American life with Jeff from Michigan. Ben Shapiro, notorious inspiration for multiple mass shooters, blames all trans people for the recent shooting in Tennessee, before talking with callers Ally from South Carolina about US Foods' unionization, Tommy from California about civil liability for gun manufacturers, Nick from New Jersey about Rutgers' teachers' strike, and Eric from Minnesota about gun control discourse, plus, your calls and IMs! Emma hosts Katherine Blunt, reporter for the Wall Street Journal, to discuss her recent book California Burning: The Fall Of Pacific Gas And Electric-And What It Means For America's Power Grid. First, Emma dives into updates on the Freight Rail strike, the unionization of Minor League Baseball, and DeSantis' human trafficking stunt, also diving into the backlash to Lindsey Graham's abortion ban as Jesse Watters criticizes him for giving away their game. Katherine Blunt then joins as she and Emma dive right into what PG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric) is (a California utility company), and how they came to achieve the status of gas and electric monopoly in the state. Next, they get into the disasters around this company, starting with the 2018 wildfire caused by their reckless negligence that destroyed the town of Paradise, killing 84 people, as they dive into the corporate failures that lead to a 100-year-old hook holding up transmission lines with no awareness from the company. Parsing through this, Emma and Katherine tackle the role of the profit motive in supporting disinvestment from self-regulation, with actual profit coming from the rate of return on capital investments that improve their overall value, also diving into the state and federal regulations that shaped the mass deregulation of the energy sector from the 1990s on. After an extended conversation on the role of climate change (and thus drought, wildfires, hurricanes, extreme cold, and more) in inflaming the already dysfunctioning grids across the US, and how California has put the liability on the shoulders of the utility companies, they wrap up the interview by assessing the role of Biden's infrastructure package in rebuilding and reinforcing our electricity grids. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon and Matt as they tackle the absurdity of the British royal family and watch their police crackdown on someone pointing out that Prince Andrew is a pedophile, also watching a Newsmax host come around to see the horrible working conditions of Freight Rail workers and having another small discussion on Tim Pool's music with Spencer from Utah. Ronald Raygun discusses Ron DeSantis' disgusting human trafficking stunt, Matt Walsh breaks down trying to do a scientific racism on the live-action Little Mermaid, and Candace Owens discusses why Black people must take responsibility for slavery, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam breaks down the biggest headlines of the day, as “Build Back… a bit” finally reaches Biden's desk and more primaries approach. First, Sam discusses today's primaries in Alaska and Wyoming, updates from New York's primaries next week, and the ongoing Georgia election interference case bringing Rudy Giuliani and Lindsay Graham to the forefront, before also touching on Louisiana's official abortion void. Next, they dive deep into the varying conservative responses to the raid on Mar-a-Lago, from Stuart Varney and Rachel Campos-Duffy walking through Trump's mild-mannered threats in awe of his zen to Doocy and Kilmeade beefing over treatment of the FBI, also admiring Senator Tim Scott's misunderstanding of the DOJ's secrecy. Sam also walks through some bonus elements of Manchin's Inflation Reduction Act, including why pretending taxing stock buybacks will do anything is a complete fool's errand, walking through the corrupt history of stock buybacks that brought us here, and why a tax on repatriated profits is so necessary with US corporate wealth piling up overseas. After a discussion on Scotland's new policy providing free menstrual care supplies (all the infrastructure for which already exists in the US), they wrap up the first half with the story of the recent 160+ person walkout at Amazon's San Bernardino, CA logistics hub, highlighting the importance of leveraging a company where it hurts especially when it's as massive as Bezos' child is. And in the Fun Half: Doocy and Kilmeade beef, NC GOP Congressional candidate asks Brandon-haters to stop disparaging Banana Republics nationwide, Kate from the University of Iowa discusses how to cover far-right news, and Jeff from Columbus explores Tulsi Gabbard's horrible past and Andrew Yang's directionless future. The crew gets into the relationship between immigration and the cheap labor lobby, Kari Lake tiptoes to line up behind DeSantis, and Ronald Raygun dives into the Farm Work Modernization act. Sam and Emma host Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now to discuss how Roe V. Wade being overturned is affecting fights for state legislatures around the country. Then, they are joined by Trita Parsi, Executive Vice President at the Quincy Institute, to discuss the Biden Administration's positioning towards Iran. First, Sam and Emma dive into updates from this weekend's Highland Park shooting, Boris Johnson's looming resignation in the UK, and Mississippi's failed attempt to reign in their trigger laws at the hands of a trial that was anything but secular. Then, Aaron Kleinman joins to walk through what the States Project is, and how it is working at the state level to secure the individual rights under attack from the rights with a particular focus on its role in securing reproductive rights. Next, Kleinman walks through the biggest statehouse and state senate races across the battleground states, starting with the single-seat that is keeping Arizona under unfettered Republican control, and Maine's role, despite the reemergence of LePage, in leading the way for the most progressive agendas across the country. They also discuss the electoral mapping changes that have pushed back against minoritarian control in Michigan and Pennsylvania (which is especially important in the latter state with the GOP's Theocratic Governor candidate), and explore the possible success in undermining wholesale Republican control in North Carolina and Nebraska, before wrapping up by diving into the action and organizing from the States Project and how we can support THEIR support of grassroots gubernatorial and state-based campaigns. Trita Parsi then joins as they dive into what the JCPOA was, its particular focus on hindering future nuclear developments, how it crumbled under Trump and why nobody else stepped in to prop it up. Expanding on this, they discuss how Biden, despite every campaign promise, has stayed in lockstep with Trump and demanded updated negotiations, before they conclude their interview by clarifying the role and theory behind the Abraham Accords in contrast with the Baghdad Dialogue, and how central Israel's obsession with being THE power of the Middle East has been to halting any progress. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive deeper into how the Highland Park shooter got his gun and Darren Bailey, IL GOP nominee for Governor, hosts a campaign rally minutes from the shooting to declare that we must “move on.” Sam addresses his role in preventing you from organizing by forcing you to watch the show instead, Dave Rubin struggles to make Sean Spicer laugh, and Joe Rogan explores his influence in a surprisingly honest manner. The crew reflects on Liz Cheney's denouncement of the “killing fields” that she sees reproductive health clinics as, Owen from LA discusses institutional dysfunction on the left, and Ronald Raygun asks what it would take to get Sam stuck between a rock and a wet place. Sam hosts Khiara M. Bridges, professor of law at the University of California, Berkeley, to discuss the recent overturning of Roe V. Wade and the repeal of concealed carry laws in New York State by the Supreme Court. First Sam reviews the standards set by this 6-3 conservative Supreme Court, overturning Roe and concealed carry laws while promoting single-religion prayer in public school, and the unsurprising result of an already unpopular court having it's approval ratings go into free fall, before covering MSNBC accidentally stumbling into Reproductive Rights activists that actually know the history of reproductive rights and the Democrats' fight (or lack thereof) for it. Then, he is joined by Professor Khiara Bridges as she dives into the actual state of the Dobbs decision, the difference between Alito's opinion to overturn Roe and Roberts' concurrence which saught to only address the ACTUAL question of the case on the viability line, and why the concepts the Court was addressing changed with the replacement of RBG with ACB. Next, they get into the role of the “Due Process” clause of the 14th Amendment, exploring how the leak went after this concept much more aggressively than the actual opinion and walking through the other elements of this Reconstruction amendment, and how this attempt to undermine the clause is still central to the opinion, just obscured in qualifier about what THIS case is doing, before Professor Bridges dives into the 9th Amendment and the legal establishment's refusal (from academia to the courts) to actually acknowledge the idea of rights of the public not previously enumerated in the Constitution. The professor then walks Sam through how the 14th Amendment's Due Process Clause has been interpreted as a right to privacy, via reason and logic, by previous courts dating back to the start of the 20th Century, and dives into the arbitrary algorithm set up by this Court to reject “new” rights on a case by case basis, wrapping up by exploring this algorithm's contrary implementation in the Bruen decision. And in the Fun Half: Sam admires Tulsi Gabbard's empathy and commitment to rationality by refusing to respond to the Roe decision (which definitely has nothing to do with her move to conservatism), Kristi Noem reminds us that every life is precious, unless that life could produce a white dude, and the LAPD finally get back to their roots of ruthlessly beating nonviolent protesters and journalists alike. SCOTUS shows us we have nothing to fear from their future by shooting tear gas from their roof, Chuck Todd gets awkward when AOC brings up holding justices accountable for their actions and statements, and Ronald Raygun reflects back on the Trump Cuck Rushmore with our recent 1/6 revelations. Rudy claims he was struck by a boulder only for video evidence to show who the real Sisy-phus is, James from CO calls in about a libertarian track to home ownership, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by comedian Sarah Silverman to discuss her recent Off-Broadway musical The Bedwetter! First, Emma and Sam walk through the news, including NYC tightening their stringent gun laws, the social security trust getting extended by at least a year, Florida ending gender-affirming healthcare… for adults on medicaid, and Biden visiting Saudi Arabia as OPEC announces a production boost. Alex Pareene then joins as they dive into his article on the “unanswered question,” addressing an entire generation's recognition of our political system as completely broken, before they walk through the weirdness of the state of our economy, including an incredibly strong employment rate and wages on the rise, while the media and government are fear-mongering about gas prices and inflation, and ignoring soaring rent and the inaccessibility of homeownership. Alex then dives into how democratic leadership is viewing this economic moment, as their property value skyrockets but corporations are finding it difficult to higher people an unlivable wages, and looks to the pandemic as a massive cause of the booming housing prices, with the “work from home” economy allowing white wealthier folks to move to lower-rent areas (thus driving up prices), and the stoppage in building production and a collapse of the supply line making the price of creating accessibility sky high. Next, Alex, Emma, and Sam look to the political divide between discussing inflation and gas prices, and refusing to address the inability of Americans to afford a roof over their heads, as representative of the democratic leadership's ideological commitment to corporate neoliberalism even as their polling numbers continue to dwindle. They wrap up the interview with an extended conversation on policing, and how, in the wake of the Uvalde massacre, the media and government have to readdress their relationship to policing, and why Biden refuses to initiate such a political movement. Then, Emma and Sam are joined by comedian, author, playwright, and just all-around creative talent that is Sarah Silverman, as they unpack her work with the late-great Adam Schlesinger to convert her memoir into a critically-celebrated (by Sam, at least) musical, how Sam connects to these stories (obviously important), and the beautiful influence she had on one Emma Vigeland. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma take a call from Ronald Raygun on the absurd pseudo-“standards” that we hold police to, Candace Owens doubles down on the Uvalde shooter being trans, because it's not normal for adult men to purse their lips, and Greg Gutfeld uplifts apolitical niche commentator Joe Rogan. Sam unpacks his takes on Nomiki's race against progressive Kristen Gonzalez, and Jose Vasquez calls in to announce his State Senate candidacy in Reno Nevada. Plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Jon Marshall, associate professor at the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, to discuss his recent book Clash: Presidents and the Press in Times of Crisis. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Alex Speidel, organizer for the United Paizo Workers to discuss their meeting at the White House and Paizo's unionizing efforts. Professor Marshall dives right into where the dynamic between the Presidency and the press stands today, looking at the troubled relationship as a continuation of two centuries of US history. Next, he, Emma, and Sam jump back to the 1790s, looking to John Adams' attacks on newspapers via the Sedition Act, cracking down on critiques of the government, only to see a spectacular backfire with a resounding loss in the election of 1800. Prof Marshal then walks through the structure he follows in his analysis, using ten specific presidencies that he thought reflected the progression of this dynamic, next moving forwards to the Presidency of Abe Lincoln, and the influence he took from the abolitionist press of the time, seeing it both as a central perspective to take in on the issue and as an important part of his GOP coalition, as the press pushed him from a tentative but anti-slavery president to signing the emancipation proclamation. Emma, Sam, and Jon then move forwards to Woodrow Wilson's prosecution of anti-war journalists during the first World War, not only relying on Adams' Sedition Act but bringing about the Trading with Enemies and Espionage acts, and the rollback of the overwhelming executive isolation from the press as the war ended – particularly after his lack of a relationship with the press saw the Right step in and turn public opinion on his League of Nations – before the Espionage act made its return in the late aughts and early 2010s with Obama employing the act against whistleblowers more than all previous presidents combined. This, of course, set the stage for Donald Trump's presidency, and his extension of espionage to journalists on the *receiving* end of leaks, particularly amidst the media boom of the 21st century, with countless new avenues (both more and less legitimate) arising between the President and media, yet algorithms and a crippling of local news serving to corrupt and corporatize much of the industry. They wrap up the interview by diving deeper into disinformation in media and the role government can, and should, play in supporting integrity in journalism. Then, Alex Speidel joins as they discuss what Paizo is, the size of the TTRPG industry, and how the pandemic saw space for him and his co-workers to create personal bonds that would serve as the eventual web of solidarity for the first North American TTRPG union and beyond. Sam and Emma also cover the progressive Ws on Ws on Ws from yesterday's primaries, Ukraine's halting peace talks, and DeSantis' crackdown of those cracking down on those cracking down on free speech, or something. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma break down the message that was sent to corporate Democrats in last night's primaries, with big victories in PA and KY, Ben Shapiro blames wokeness for legitimizing Great Replacement fears, and Mike from Jersey shows state pride while Gabe from KC walks through the progressive primary Ws. Chris Wallace pushes Bernie on Build Back Better, unfortunately going after the wrong person 12 months too late, Jimmy Dore says Donald Trump is the true anti-imperialist president and blames progressives for making him horny for DeSantis, Scott from TX dives into religion and conservatism, and Ronald Raygun dives into Right Wing media. Jordan Peterson and Bret Weinstein cannot deal with their cruelty being met with people making fun of them, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news. Alex, Emma, and Sam begin with Hannity reassuring his audience that nothing will change with the Roe v. Wade decision, because, of course, the radical left is just hysterical, and the irony of this perspective when the GOP (and Manchin) were just ranting about any legislative codification actually creating a massive imbalance in… keeping the right to abortion the same. This brings them to a problem being faced by both of the party institutions, as now that the fight against Roe has suddenly been won, nobody has a coherent plan for what to do next. Looking to the Democratic leadership, they then dive into their obsession with institutionalism, particularly when it comes to the Senate and Supreme Court, and how it blinds them from the reality that's unfolding before their eyes, as seen with Nancy Pelosi's obsession with a “strong Republican party” and endorsing anti-choice democrats, as if a majority control with a party that doesn't align on fundamental rights could achieve anything when it came to those fundamental rights. Expanding on this, they explore the countless left-wing policies that somehow are dealbreakers for a Pelosi endorsement, and how the focus on taking down progressives in primaries is a complete waste with an impending midterm where the Democrats have no message and no plan. They wrap up the interview by discussing the out-of-touch nature of the politics of Democratic leadership, Biden's transactional nature as President, and Sam and Emma touch on stoppages in both COVID and Ukraine support, Elon's falling stocks, and the GOP's refusal to look at child poverty as a genuine economic issue. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss the Republican establishment running away from discussions on Roe v. Wade implications, and also from discussions on Rick Scott's platform, and also discussions on their OWN platform, Oochie Wally compares hosting a podcast to running World of Warcraft, Kilmeade pressures Mark Esper on why he would discuss Trump's plans to bomb Mexico, and Ryan from TN discusses the real horrors of the Roe decision's impact on miscarriages. Joe Rogan asks us to imagine gay people facing homophobia, because that's what's happening to straight kids RIGHT NOW. Sam and Emma dive into the disturbing videos of the IDF's assault on Shireen Abu Aqleh's funeral, Ronald Raygun reflects on the legacy of one Glenn Beck, and Glenn Greenwald discusses self-care tactics such as tweeting death threats, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Lily Geismer, professor of history at Claremont McKenna College, to discuss her recent book Left Behind: The Democrats' Failed Attempt to Solve Inequality. on the shift from New Deal democratic ideology, to the neoliberal tactic of entrusting social development in private enterprise in a pivot to the white suburbanite. Professor Geismer first discusses the ascendancy of this Democratic ideology, situating us in the late 80s with the rise of the MIke Dukakises, Tony Coelhoes, and Bill Clintons, embracing tech, trade, and finance as the solution to economic growth, from the Route 128 in Mass to Coelho's focus on raising corporate money, and the inspiration Governor Clinton (during his Arkansas years) took from these policies. Next, she, Emma, and Sam walk through how this sector of the Democratic party came to be, as in the wake of the 1960s the Democrats found themselves on the defensive, with all of their policy coming as a reaction to the shifting GOP, and a new guard of “Watergate Babies” coming in and opposition traditional Democrats and fueling mistrust of government, asking for a shift away from the special interest groups of the labor movement and focusing on middle-class white suburbanites. Next, Professor Geismer looks to the shift that these Democrats took from focusing on “fairness” to promoting “opportunity” in a major move away from redistributive politics and towards promoting (supposedly) meritocratic capitalism, and dives deeper into what Bill Clinton's Arkansas looked like, from his attempted emulation of Silicon Valley to bringing in ShoreBank and other early microeconomic financiers, cutting social security in preference for privatized loans to certain poor folks. Looking to the Democratic primaries of the 1980s, they then dive into why this emerging neoliberal wing was able to win over the future of the Democratic party, coming to climax with Bill Clinton's market-driven pseudo-populism, and leading to three decades demonstrating exactly why this ideology cannot function. After briefly touching on the differences between the “Watergate Baby” form of neoliberalism and Milton Friedman's form of neoliberalism, Emma, Sam, and Prof. Geismer wrap up with a discussion on whether or not we are seeing the end of this era, and what the world we are moving towards might look like. Sam and Emma also discuss the protests in the wake of the Roe v. Wade leak and the State's unsurprisingly demeaning reaction, continued Russian war crimes, and US weapons sales to Ukraine. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma cover Governor Tate and Jack Tapper's really lovely conversation on the criminalization of doctors performing potentially life-saving surgeries on women, Governor Asa Hutchinson dives into why he really hopes that the state he is at the lead of passes exemptions for rape and incest in their abortion ban, and (supposed) FDNY members remind women protesters that their bodies are now his. Chris from the 718 calls in on the election in the Philippines, Ronald Raygun explores why it's a waste of time to give time to people who criticize how you spend your time, and how Sam and Emma could do it better. Steve Schmidt uses Mother's Day to write myriad threads on Megan McCain, why her mother hates her, and why her father was a Russian asset, and then A Squared calls in to explore the climax of the Conservative Justice's life projects of undoing Roe v. Wade. Plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Jeff Hauser, the head of the Revolving Door Project at the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Jordan Flowers, co-founder of the Amazon Labor Union and The Congress of Essential Workers. First, Sam and Emma dive into the Ohio primaries, as JD Vance comes out on top to fight Tim Ryan, Nina Turner comes up short once again, and Biden's dance around abortion while McConnell straight-up refuses to address anything but the leak. Jeff, Sam, and Emma begin with Hauser's thoughts on the implications of the SCOTUS leak, particularly with his history working at the DOJ, diving into the need for progressive and center-left organizers to keep this central to political discourse. Next, they dive into his work as head of the Revolving Door Project, looking at the cyclical path followed by the Democratic consultant class, between working to develop policy for the party and working to get around that policy for corporations, and diving into the examples they've been tracking in the Biden administration, and whether that has anything to do with the Democrats' refusal to actually stick up to corporate crime, despite the incredible popularity such action would have. They then dive further into active Democratic inaction, particularly in the realms of supply chain economics and reproductive rights, looking at other, incredibly popular moves that Democratic leadership could (and likely won't) make, including putting on corporate pressure in the fight for consumers against price gouging, and pushing back against an antagonistic Supreme Court and forcing big decisions, even if they lose. Jordan Flowers then joins, diving into the creation and cultivation of the Amazon Labor Union and Congress of Essential Workers, before looking at the mixed bag that was the recent round of ALU elections for the LDJ-5 storage center, discussing the roles of part-time employment and storage duties played in giving Amazon easier ability to display union-busting propaganda. They also look at the incredible success of the unions, discussing today's visit of his co-founders to the White House, and what the fight looks like going forwards. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the two democratic reactions to the Roe v. Wade decision: the first being putting it on midterm voters (as Biden did) and the second being the profoundly ahistorical tactic of blaming “Trump Republicans” (as Schumer and Pelosi did) for the extremist result. Grant Stinchfield for some reason sees KBJ as the source of the leak, definitely not because of her race or gender but for other, nonexistent reasons. Ronald Raygun reflects on various developments in Democrats' ability to talk about serious issues, as he, Emma, and Sam look at Michigan State Sen. Mallory McMorrow's continued ability to stir passion in her base, and Aaron from Chicago dives into the role of the Supreme Court in general. Crowder dives into his views on the diverse tastes of rapists, and our favorite Men's Rights activist calls to explore his take on the abortion topic (it's not as bad as you'd think, but everything else he says is). Sam and Emma host Adolph Reed, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Pennsylvania, to discuss his recent book The South: Jim Crow and Its Afterlives, on the lasting legacy of the racial order that defined the post-reconstruction era, and its intrinsic ties to labor and exploiting the Black workforce. Professor Reed first situates when the Jim Crow period was, as regimes of racial segregation began consolidating as reconstruction waned, and becoming a genuine wholescale institution of the South at the end of the 1800s, lasting well into the 20th Century and beyond the Second World War, before he dives into the driving forces behind this coalition: power and labor. Prof. Reed leads Emma and Sam through the pushback to rising Republican populism in the South during the flux period of reconstruction, as the white Democratic elite began to fear their overthrow (just more taxes and multi-racial labor coalitions), thus pushing coups (some literally) throughout southern governments, and shutting the doors behind them, reserving politics to control of the ownership class, and employing disenfranchisement and segregation to undermine the growing power of Black freed folks. This brings them to the concept of disenfranchisement as a means to an end for the Right, keeping them in power by relying on the racial social order that had been created, and how this is representative of why the Right has found footholds in power where the left has failed: having a practical end (keeping power and elite control) that they can maneuver different means to support. Next, Professor Reed dives into two mainstream misunderstandings of the end of Jim Crow: 1) That racism ended with the end of Jim Crow, or 2) that the changes didn't truly matter. He then dives into how neoliberalism (and liberalism) have created a view of race as the one and only fault-line of American politics – that slavery and Jim Crow were made to produce racism, not cotton and sugar or Right-wing governments – and the importance of centering the labor exploitation of Black folks (alongside many others), before they wrap up the interview by looking at how anti-racism organizing and the future of US politics will have to deal with this “flattening” of political discourse. Sam and Emma also touch on Lindsay Graham complaining that he was criticized for supporting Brett Kavanaugh (potential sexual assaulter) while the Dems don't receive that backlash for the Kentanji Brown Jackson (definitely a Black woman) nomination. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Josh Hawley go off about the constitutional nature of child pornography as he tries to tie Ketanji Brown Jackson to the people she put in jail, Chucky Summer from LA calls in about redistricting, and then they cover Kentucky's 15-week abortion ban and State Sen. Karen Berg's incredible impassioned plea as one of the few women and ONLY radiologist in the State Senate. Ronald Raygun and Emma team up to question Sam on why he doesn't capitalize on this correlation between the amount of skin he exposes and wealth redistribution to refugees. Kowalski from NE goes from Sam's body to rising wood (prices), and Ohio republicans brawl over… definitely something. Dave Rubin responds to the backlash to his birth announcement and grapples with maintaining both his dignity and grift, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Kimberly St. Julian Varnon, Ph.D student in history at the University of Pennsylvania, to discuss her work on Soviet-Ukrainian history and the role race has played in the wake of the fall of the USSR. They begin by walking through the history of the unification of Ukraine, which was split between the Austro-Hungarian and Russian empires before WWI, with the eastern segment featuring the black earth region as a center of agricultural production for Russia and cities like Odessa (which birthed Orthodox Judaism), all under repressive rule against Ukrainian culture and language. With the fall of the Austro-Hungarian empire with the first World War, and the rise of the USSR in 1922, Ukraine finally saw its unification with the creation of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, becoming the second most powerful republic in the communist union, until Stalin began his five-year plan with pushback from Ukrainian peasants, responding to them with the state-created starvation of the Holodomor, killing millions of Ukrainians. In the wake of the massacre, Ukraine ended up falling in step with the USSR up until its dissolution, opening the country up in 1991 to finally acknowledging the horrors it faced under Stalin. This brings us to the contemporary era, as St. Julian Varnon explores the 1994 Budapest memorandum that officially recognized an independent Ukraine under the conditions that they give up their nuclear arsenal, up until Russia's invasion in 2013 which officially broke the deal, before she, Sam, and Emma take on the concept of joining NATO or the EU, with the former really not gaining popularity until Putin's recent escalation and invasion, whereas the latter became central to Ukrainian politics in the wake of the 2013 start of this conflict. This leads Kimberly to walk through the 2013 invasion of Ukraine and the 2014 annexation of Crimea in the wake of the Euromaidan protests, looking at the progression of the war between separatists and Ukraine and the fourteen thousand deaths (largely ignored by the West) leading up to Putin's escalation in 2022. They wrap up the interview by looking at St. Julian Varnon's study of race in the region, especially coming out of the socialist era of race-neutrality, as she takes on the legitimate claims of ultra-nationalist neo-nazi organizations (such as the Azov Battalion) in Ukraine, which have been vaguely relevant on a national level, and understanding this segment of Ukraine as something we see throughout Eastern Europe, Western Europe, and even the United States, before they look to the rapid assimilation of Ukrainians into “whiteness,” despite their previous treatment over the years, and the massive impact this has had on the treatment of African and Afro-Ukrainian people also looking to find safety and stability. Sam and Emma also touch on the 4,500 arrests in Russia in the wake of anti-war protests, Joe Scarborough's encouraging the US to flex their nuclear arms, despite the horrors it would obviously result in (even in a best-case scenario). And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam take a call from Casey from Spokane on pandemic monetary policies and their impact, admire Marco Rubio admitting that he truly knows better than Ukrainian officials what dangers are facing them, and Tucker “D's get degrees when they stand for ‘donations'” Carlson ramps up the racism against Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson. Luke from Oneonta discusses the Azov Battalion and their Neo-Nazi counterparts in the Russian army, such as the Wagner Group, Andrew Cuomo returns to remind us that we should really be canceling legislative gridlock, not sexual assault, Ronald Raygun talks tayhaysay, and Mike Lindell announces his class-action lawsuit against “all machines,” plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Matt Duss, foreign policy adviser to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), to discuss the recent developments in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as well as the U.S. airstrike in Somalia from a few days ago, the first in the area since last August. Matt, Sam, and Emma begin with a clip of a journalist in Poland pleading with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson for the establishment of a no-fly zone over Ukraine, as they work through the tactic as a clear declaration of war, recognize World War 3 as a choice that will lead to countless deaths, and unpack what non-military action and de-escalation is still viable at this point. Next, Matt situates the conflict within the last decade of geopolitical development, starting with the overthrow of a Russian-sympathetic Ukrainian government in 2014 and the resulting annexation of Crimea, before they work to define the role of Russia to Ukrainians both inside and out of the Donbas region, and use a leaked essay from a Russian outlet to unpack what Putin sees as the “Ukrainian Question,” and the role he hopes to assume in tackling it. Matt also leads Sam and Emma through a conversation on what the future of this war could look like, especially if Russian action expands outside of Ukraine, how Putin created the exact situation he supposedly feared, and the central importance of helping Ukrainians survive and thrive while also ensuring the least bloodshed – especially through economic and immigration policy. Sam and Emma also touch on today's primaries in Texas, Russia's advancement on Kharkiv, and the domestic blowback that Putin is facing, before they dive into the ghoulish and inhumane pitch by Hillary Clinton on Rachel Maddow's show, pushing treating Ukraine as we did Afghanistan in the ‘80s, despite the unnecessary death and destruction that wrought on the country and its people. And in the Fun Half: Ronald Raygun calls in as he unpacks the emotional responses to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both in himself and others, John from San Antonio runs through his expectations for today's Texas primaries, and Candace Owens takes on the RadFems and their darned Women's Lib, leaving men everywhere with empty plates upon coming home from making his man money. Todd Starnes and Steven Crowder continue the right's commitment to reusing, reducing, and recycling their trash-ass comedy, Jason from CT calls in on the SCOTUS' evisceration of the VRA, and Dave Rubin and Dennis Prager take on the real divisive issue in our country: learning about the divisive issues in our country. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Alex Pareene, Contributing Editor at the New Republic and proprietor of the AP newsletter on Substack, to round up the week in news, as they dive into Breyer's retirement and the role of the judicial branch moving forward, as well as look at the state of Omicron and COVID stances on the left. They begin with Breyer's announcement and the emphasis he puts on the continuation of the American “experiment” that he's so graciously ruled over in a lifetime position, walking through the fetishization of US governance and processes that has been stunting any material change for ages, and the central role liberals have had to play in it. Next, they get into the politics of replacing Breyer's seat, particularly within the context of the Right's obstructionism and Biden's decision to solely consider Black women for the seat (but don't worry, they'll still be Ivy Leaguers), before this lovely conversation leads to one on the future of Democratic leadership, and whether they'll decide to move away from bipartisan fetishization, and towards getting things passed. Alex, Emma, and Sam wrap up the interview looking at the US's COVID restrictions (or lack thereof) in comparison with much of the rest of the West, and the incredible (and endangering) freedoms we've enjoyed amidst nonstop whining from libertarians and liberals alike. They also touch on the judicial decision to cancel Biden's gas and oil leases, and a Tennessee school board's banning of Art Spiegelman's holocaust graphic novel “Maus.” And in the Fun Half: Micah from CA calls in to discuss promoting leftist candidacies, Ronald Raygun tears Sam a new one over not holding his kids to account, and Biden decides to leave another campaign promise up to the filibuster, with Jen Psaki shirking the responsibility over to the ever-productive Congress. The FL Senate Minority Leader is reminded by Florida's Surgeon General that science doesn't have yes and no answers, Joe Rogan and Jordan Peterson revel in the ability of people to do things that they know are bad, and Emma and Sam unpack the overwhelming response to Sam's debate with off-brand philosophy bro Jackson Hinkle, to the point that countless Hinklers on Twitter happened to have identical responses, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Sheryll Cashin, professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, to discuss her recent book White Space, Black Hood: Opportunity Hoarding and Segregation in the Age of Inequality, on how the residential caste system built up around race and geography has ingrained itself into US cities, becoming central to how we imagine our neighborhoods and cities operating. They begin by focusing on the geographical element, as Professor Cashin looks to Baltimore to explore how the migration of escaped and freed slaves to the North saw cities resort to a contain and segregate tactic, tightly grouping Black folks into neighborhoods separated by infrastructure and investment, both in what is built, via the construction of highway boundaries, and in what isn't, with a complete desertion of public infrastructure. Looking into the 21st Century, Cashin explores how even under Black mayors and majority-Black city councils cities like Baltimore saw the residential caste system expanded and reinforced, discussing the role of Maryland Governor Larry Hogan in putting a stop to the aptly named “red line” to connect poorer neighborhoods to downtown and the suburbs, and re-investing the money entirely into rich white areas. After discussing this element of boundary maintenance, Professor Cashin, Sam, and Emma look to how this segregation also promotes opportunity hoarding, by not only keeping wealth and infrastructure down in Black neighborhoods, regardless of economic makeup, but also by forcing them to subsidize opportunity in wealthier neighborhoods. Lastly, they touch on the role of stereotype-driven policing and surveillance and how this works to reinforce both of the previous two elements, before they wrap up by discussing Sheryll Cashin's ideas on abolition and repair, working to reverse the destructive policies that have defined our metropolitan development over the last century and a half. Sam and Emma also touch on Ron DeSantis's tactical “if I can't see it, it doesn't exist” strategy with invisible viruses. And in the Fun Half: Sam finally gets some video proof that not all Pats fans absolutely suck, Emma compliments Sam's “soy-boy professor” look, and the crew discusses the HIPAA violation that is a Tinder date asking DeSantis his STD status. John from SA, Kowalski from NE, and Ronald Raygun hit us with back to back to back regulars as they tackle Wisconsin gerrymandering, defeatism, and ideal FBI-Plant Dave Ramsey, respectively. Bro Flamingo also discusses how the Activision culture of abuse has been swept under the rug, and an anonymous caller discusses his experience with the disgusting gas pollution coming from the abandoned Fresh Kills landfill in Staten Island, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Dave Goulson, professor of biology at the University of Sussex, to discuss his recent book Silent Earth: Averting the Insect Apocalypse, on the rampant decline of insect populations worldwide over the last few decades, and how the trend continuing could completely alter our relationships to crops and practically all plant life. Professor Goulson dives into the essential niches that insects fill, from their role as pollinators to being bio-control agents and recyclers of all sorts of life, as well as the ties between climate change and the insect apocalypse, both in terms of the issues that create them, and in how they reinforce each other. Next, he, Emma, and Sam discuss how this trend towards extinction is hitting the pollinating insects we appreciate (butterflies, bees) while the pest-like ones (mosquitoes, houseflies) have been able to adapt and thrive in human habitation, before they get into the effects we've seen, and what the future of this trend could look like, from hand-pollination to massive food scarcity. They also touch on the biggest drivers of insect extinction, with habitat loss at the top of the list, alongside insecticide, changing climates, even light pollution, and Professor Goulson reminds us of the ease with which this could be reversed, both on a structural and individual level. Sam and Emma also dive into the continued fear-mongering around inflation and the deficit when it comes to infrastructure, while we're about to pass a $780 billion defense budget and remind us of the dangers of nonstick pans as PFOS are revealed to be even more toxic than we thought. And in the Fun Half: Bro Flamingo calls in to discuss accountability and punishment, especially when it comes to the Rittenhouse case, Sam clarifies his position on being a socialist (he doesn't have one), and the crew comes up with a perfect solution to Alec from Minneapolis trying to shift his parents away from cable news: the Majority Report. Mehdi Hasan goes after Brad Raffensperger, forcing the issue of supporting Trump to the fore, Chris Christie gets shamed by Nicolle Wallace for criticizing MSNBC and CNN while letting Fox run wild, before he also births the discussion of the Mount Rushmore of Trump-Cucks. Ronald Raygun corrects the record on what's wrong with Sam, Candace Owens presents a platform of Stolen Valor, and Jeremy from TX talks doomsday prep culture, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma take stock of a big last few days in news, from reconciliation negotiations to the courts, immigration to labor, and more! After giving a little foreshadowing to the discussion on the billionaire tax, they dive into Manchin still floundering in front of climate activists, even when they accost him on solid ground, and Bernie continues to center Medicare expansion in negotiating power and for dental, hearing, and vision. Next, Sam really gets into his flow as he and Emma walk through all of the details of the proposed changes to the tax structure, and what changes Manchin and Sinema are standing in front of, particularly discussing the proposal for corporate minimum tax rate, before they move into the absurdity of Washington's obsession with “pay-fors,” and the incredible value of a billionaires tax. Then, Emma and Sam run down what is and isn't in reconciliation, and what has been cut in half; they talk the Child Tax Credit and its single-year extension, the disappearance of free community college, Bernie's medicare expansions still hanging in limbo, a complete cutting of the expansive paid leave proposal, Manchin's hindrance of climate provisions and Medicaid federalization, and the halving of housing aid and eldercare. And in the Fun Half: Mike from Jersey talks paternity leave, Joe Rogan talks paternity leave but poorly, and Ronald Raygun and Sam start to mend their pome-based beef, before Oscar from NoLa calls in for a heavy discussion on immigration, reconciliation, and helping out dreamers. Norris from Pittsburgh calls in to promote his “No Child Left…” policy, Jay from Long Island asks about the NYS Senate ballot proposal, and Charlie Kirk really puts on a show as he tampers the violent tendencies of his base just enough to keep them angry and keep himself away from responsibility. Dave Rubin calls out liberals misappropriating his culture as they call people Nazis, and Sam takes on why, at this point, the Build Back Better plan will not ever be seen as a win for Democrats, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, staff writer at Slate, to discuss the new Supreme Court term, and what it holds for the justices and the country at large. Dialing in on three upcoming cases, Mark, Emma, and Sam explore how the upcoming term could see a complete deconstruction of reproductive rights, the administrative state, and any attempt at gun control legislation, now that the swing vote lies in Justice Kavanaugh's lap. Starting with Roe v. Wade, they dive into Mississippi's challenge to the viability rule, and why, despite MS's attempt to prohibit abortions past 15 weeks, the Court calling their legitimacy into question no matter what likely will encourage them to dismantle Roe in general, rather than slowly dicing it up. Next, they move on to AHA v. Becerra which puts the Chevron Doctrine and Administrative State on the chopping block. First, Mark takes the time to explain what this doctrine actually is, allowing Congress to delegate the specific regulatory numbers to the relevant agencies, whether it be the EPA determining the PPM limit on Mercury in the Air, OSHA writing health regulations in the workplace, DHHS working to set drug prices, or literally any other element of the executive branch's ability to administrate. The last case they cover is New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, which seeks to expand the 2008 ruling of DC v. Heller that redefined the Second Amendment to apply to individuals, rather than militias, working to move the right to concealed carry into the spotlight. Mark, Emma, and Sam also dive into how Trump's and McConnell's focus on the district and circuit courts, not to mention SCOTUS, has given the Republican agenda a perfect route to judicial implementation, before wrapping up the interview with a discussion on the few options for Democrats to prevent the judicial branch's infringement on democracy. Sam and Emma also touch on the developing Kelloggs strike, as well as Biden's sudden turn on the filibuster now that keeping the legitimacy of the debt ceiling has come into the fold. And in the Fun Half: The MR crew reflects a bit on the absurdity of the coercion of abortion patients by the state, including translating electrical frequencies to audio and forcing the patient to listen, and Jeremiah from Tennessee discusses the role of adoption in the abortion debate, before Ronald Raygun and Sam get into a debate over the reproductive capabilities of… apples. Sam, Emma, Matt, and Bradley then admire the production that is the Progressive Anti-Abortion Uprising's new commercial that takes on the redistribution of oppression from actual oppressed people (Black and Brown folk, Trans folk, etc, etc) onto the TRUE oppressed class (embryos). They also touch on the self-destructive capacity of the Democratic party, and discuss the importance of anti-trust law and valuing Elizabeth Warren in this fight. Sam from Indiana wraps up the show with a weird debate on individual rights, bodily autonomy, and gun ownership, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Amanda Montell, linguist and host of the Sounds Like A Cult podcast, to discuss her recent book Cultish: The Language of Fanaticism, on the social role of cults, how it has changed, and the influence it has on our language today. They start off by looking at the discourse around cults, the vague label it takes in the media, and how that flimsy definition helped push Amanda towards exploring the cult-like elements of all types of social relationships. Montell dives into the problems in the typical view of cults and their members, exploring the relationship between cultural turbulence, faith, and the desire for easy solution through community that birthed both the ages of cults in the 20th century, and the more recent renaissance of cultish languages. Next, they cover the overlap between the protestant capitalist ethic and the spirit of cultish organizations, pushing individualism, ambition, self-improvement, and entrepreneurship, touching on the specific capitalization on the language of female independence, from the use of Tupperware in the 50s to today's multi-level-marketing and holistic health schemes. Diving into the importance of language, Amanda, Sam, and Emma look at the influence it can have on how we think and how cultish language capitalizes on this, working to psychologically separate, gaslight, and discipline those involved, before they wrap up the interview looking at what this can teach us about our current political moment, with cult-like behavior coming to define elements of our discourse and the para-social relationships that are central to social media. Sam and Emma conclude the free half by discussing the US Military's lackluster apology for one of countless civilian slaughters by the US drone program, and watch an Iraq Veteran attempt to hold GWB somewhat accountable for his wars. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma chat with Mindy from Ohio about her personal experiences with cult-like coercion, Ronald Raygun discusses the relationships between religion, juice, and cults, and the crew talks about the continued failures with handling COVID, particularly when it comes to GA and Mississippi, as well as the governments' responses. They also look at the recent abuses at the border with the influx of Haitian refugees, before talking reconciliation and the bipartisan bill, and Josh and the Psychedelic Quaker call in to chat vaccines, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Astra Taylor, co-founder of the Debt Collective and author of the recent book Remake the World: Essays, Reflections, Rebellions, to discuss the 10-year anniversary of Occupy Wall Street. Then Sam and Emma are joined by Heather Digby Parton, proprietor of Hullabaloo and contributing writer at Salon.com, to wrap up the week in news. Astra, Sam, and Emma dive into the start of the Occupy movement, ten years ago today, as a response to the call issued by Adbusters and the failure of the US Government to provide any reciprocity or repercussions for the 2008 financial crisis. Astra reflects on the initial general assemblies and working groups that worked to determine why they were there and what their demands should be, as well as the skepticism that they'd last beyond the first night with the mass police presence in NYC. They expand on this discussion, exploring how the role of police brutality served to somewhat bolster the public view around the movement and helped jumpstart the spread of the movement well beyond just NYC or even the US, even serving to turn the political tide against the Clinton neoliberalism. They discuss the diversity of ideology in the movement, even if it was driven by an anti-establishment ethos, and how that served to help create this open and strong picture of the 99%, before wrapping up with how the movement was eventually forced out of Zuccotti Park and looking at the lasting impact on the progressive left Occupy ultimately had. Then Digby comes on to chat about what we have learned from the CA Recall, particularly in terms of boosting turnout by running against Trump no matter the election, and she, Sam, and Emma also cover the role of the centrist Dems within he general infrastructure shenanigans going on in Congress. Then in the Fun Half, Ronald Raygun calls in to chat about pegging tactics and Sam's wood, Jake from the Bay Area talks appealing to liberals, Ben Shapiro struggles with California not being Texas, and Clarence Thomas offers some incredibly weird words on the new role of the SCOTUS, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Heather Digby Parton, contributing writer at Salon.com, to wrap up the week in news, from the Texas abortion law's overturning of Roe v. Wade and its civil-bounty policy, to the upcoming cut off of federal unemployment benefits. Heather, Sam, and Emma start off by looking at the developments of the Supreme Court as an institution, paying particular attention to the increased use of shadow dockets since the start of the Trump Presidency, and continuing into Biden's, before generally walking through the anti-democratic and unilateral nature of the Court, and how the Democrats have refused to take on their excesses of power. Next, they explore potential paths to take in restoring and protecting Roe v. Wade, including how SCOTUS could fight back against legislative codification or capitalizing on the foolishness and destructive capacity of the “bounty” civil suits to get the Texas law overturned, before turning to how Democrats have to try to bolster their support going into the 2022 elections. They also discuss the importance of the Trump Presidency in today's courts, the role of the Manchins and Sinemas moving forwards, as now Roe v. Wade hangs in the balance alongside the infrastructure package, and the incoming unemployment drop-off that will put millions of Americans on the financial brink as the pandemic still rages. They wrap up the interview with some previews for the 2022 election cycle, and Sam and Emma cover their fundraising effort for Afghan refugees, the destruction of Hurricane Ida, and the absurdity of SCOTUS' procedural argument. And in the Fun Half: Sam, Emma, and the MR crew celebrate the end of summer with a Sun's out Guns out fundraiser for Afghan refugees, featuring Sam's lovely graphic tank from Ronald Raygun and a multitude of double-barreled performances from our host. Ronald Raygun calls in to talk about the classification of Afghan refugees as “parolees,” and how we can still push the government to accept more and more of them. Mike from Winnipeg talks plant-based eating, Josh from KC explores corruption and charter schools, we get a colorful conversation with Hunter Biden, and look at the crashing of the Texas abortionsnitch site, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Cristina Beltran, Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at New York University, to discuss her recent book, Cruelty As Citizenship: How Migrant Suffering Sustains White Democracy, on the project of whiteness that has built the United States, and why the backlash to a changing racial consciousness in the US has seen a focus on immigration policy. Professor Beltran walks through the history of this project and how the American experiment was grounded in a civic duty that drove displacement and segregation. Beginning with the settler-colonial drive westward and the duty of individuals to claim space and build it up as their own, she explores how this civic role continued to build up this concept of white democracy, before moving into the segregation era and how, through public enforcement, segregation became a democratic project for white citizens. After the fall of Jim Crow in the 60s, the only remaining population that could be vocally dominated under the rule of law became the migrant population. Emma, Sam, and Cristina explore how this logic of domination is ingrained in the western idea of citizenship, to rule and be ruled, and discuss the tyrannical pleasure promoted by it, before they look into the absence of a sharing mentality in American culture, and how these elements of the American psyche result in zero-sum views of freedom, representation, and citizenship. They conclude with a greater discussion on the relationship between Latinx voters and immigration policy, and Sam and Emma begin reflecting on the joy and beauty of Michael Brooks. And in the Fun Half: The MR Crew dedicates the second half of today's show to remember the wonder and positivity that the late Michael Brooks brought to countless lives. Lisha Brooks, Bhaskar Sunkara, Joshua Kahn Russell, Djene Bajalan, and Wosny Lambre join to celebrate the hilarity, empathy, intelligence, love, and humanity that Michael spread wherever he went, sharing stories from his days at MR and TMBS, from personal and professional perspectives, and reflecting on the growth he encouraged in himself and those around him. Sam and Emma host Henry Farrell, SNF Agora Professor of International Affairs at Johns Hopkins, to discuss his new paper "Rechanneling Beliefs: How Information Flows Hinder or Help American Democracy," taking on the state of American democracy in historical context, and looking into how our current crisis has developed and what we can do to reverse it. They cover the basics, such as what democracy actually is, and look into how the self-reinforcing elements of democracy have begun to break down as our shared belief systems and faith in democracy have become more stratified than ever. Farrell walks us through a variety of ways that these issues can be countered on the particular level, reinforcing a less partisan environment and making it more difficult for any party to assert long term control, and how this focuses on the importance of bipartisan consequences rather than allowing emphasis on bipartisan support to consistently undermine any actual change. Lastly, they discuss the role of Fox News in the social media ecosystem, and why the EU could serve as a model for unifying anti-trust laws with broader principles on privacy and information flow to help stymy the malignancy of fake news. Sam and Emma touch on how Obama's insistence that Republicans will see the light is representative of a refusal to acknowledge this democratic crisis, and celebrate the senate passing a New York State anti-trust bill. And in the Fun Half: Nomiki Konst joins Sam and Emma in debating how far Biden is really willing to go in getting nothing done, and what Kamala Harris could possibly have benefitted from telling Americans to tell migrants to go home, before Ronald Raygun calls in to give us his thoughts on the latter. They discuss developing protests as Jacob from Alabama covers the success of the Miner's strike despite brutal arrests and the continuing trend of automobile attacks, and look into the Border Patrol's use of a helicopter to deter Line 3 pipeline protesters in Minnesota. Lance from the Serfs helps us dig into the horrors of the residential school system in Canada and the importance of the Land Back movement in finding at least a base level of reparations. Then, Sam, Emma, and Nomiki push back on the absurdity of Republicans crusading against Critical Race Theory while being unable to point towards anti-white (lol) consequences from any law, plus, your calls and IMs! Sam and Emma host Daniel Levy, president of the US Middle East Project, and Noah Kulwin, co-creator of the Blowback podcast, to explore two of the US’ messiest and most destructive long-term foreign policy relationships in Israel and Cuba, respectively. Daniel joins to discuss the attacks in Gaza, how commitment to Israeli impunity has undermined a future of a feasible Israeli state, and how raising consciousness around white supremacy has helped discourse in the US to begin to shift, even as the Biden administration gives the green light to continued Israeli violence. Sam and Emma delve into the roles of Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib in changing tides in Congress, then, Noah Kulwin unpacks the myths of the conventional narrative around the Cuban revolution and Cuba's relationship with the US. He explores how the 1959 revolution acted as a second war of independence, separating them from the neocolonial systems of the US, and the devastating effects of the proceeding embargo and total isolation forced on Cuba by the US, particularly after the fall of the USSR. And in the Fun Half: Brian from Kansas explores the serious racism in Israel, even within its own borders, MTG yells into the void about… AOC and diapers? Ronald Raygun joins to talk about growing consciousness around the Israel occupation of Palestine, and Matt Walsh engages in the erasure of his peers and claims that white supremacy does not exist. Next, a Proud Boys leader finally sees the injustice of Donald Trump in all the wrong ways, and Ben from NY calls in to get Sam and Emma’s perspectives on the NYHS curriculum. Sam hosts David Dayen (@ddayen), executive editor at The American Prospect, and Matt Binder (@MattBinder), host of the DOOMED podcast and writer at Mashable. On today's show: Whistleblower Dr. Rick Bright says winter 2020 could be "darkest in modern history." David Dayen (@ddayen), executive editor at The American Prospect, joins Sam to break down the House Democrats 'HEROES' act and the political malpractice it represents. From the bill's corporate focus to its pre-emptive compromises, it's clear Pelosi and the centrist Democrats are trying to make sure the crisis does not lead to structural change. Meanwhile, Pramila Jayapal and the progressive caucus have mounted a hapless opposition. And Joe Biden is doubling down on being Joe Biden. What a mess. Matt Binder (@MattBinder), host of the DOOMED podcast and writer at Mashable (and MR alum!) joins Sam to discuss his televised "discussion" with Brandon Straka (remember him?) and the conspiracy theories driving Boomer politics, from Pizzagate to Q-anon. On the fun half: Jon from San Antonio wonders if Americans will ever express their anger over Covid politically. Ronald Raygun plugs GoFundMe for striking agricultural workers; donate at GoFundMe.com/didyoueattoday. Dr. Bright shares email correspondence with industry executive saying "we are in deep shit." Dr. Bright says administration was warned about PPE shortages were coming in January. Trump and Kayleigh McEnany describe Obama pandemic response as "paper packet." McConnell admits he lied about Obama plan for pandemic. Trump says we have the best testing, but it is overrated, complains he doesn't get enough credit. Trump says we'd have fewer cases if we did less testing. Trump denies talking to anyone at DOJ regarding Richard Burr stepping down from Senate Intel chair. Biden says he wouldn't vote for himself if he believed Tara Reade. Indiana Senator Mike Braun objects to demands to release CDC guidelines to reopen country, blames COVID outbreak on bureaucratic stodginess. Plus, your calls and IMs! With chaos currently griping the crew of the Dire Weasels, we turn to some of our audience to help give you some content! This time, after a fateful dice roll and some decision non-making, we decided to play Fiasco, and in the shadow of SHU, we decide to play Super heroes! I mean, sort of? You'll see. I decided to take some liberties with this episode. I've added in somethings that I hope more help than harm the episode as a whole. If you liked what you heard, let us know! This is only a part one, which means your input may decide on what we do with part 2! I've taken out some of the banter, but don't worry, it's all in a blooper reel I've been creating. Now, on to actual business... Send us email at direweasels@gmail.com, rate and review on iTunes (and google, let me review a damn podcast), and check out patreon.com/direweasels.
