Ep 383 - Q&A: Imbalances, Fatigue, & REDs

Iron Culture

In today's Q&A episode, the Erics work through a few listener questions. First they tackle upper/lower body imbalance — why lagging body parts usually call for improving training quality before adding volume, and why standout muscle groups can be maintained on surprisingly little work. Next is a long discussion on managing fatigue and exercise sequencing in high-frequency, non-traditional splits, including why the "48 hours between muscle groups" rule is more dogma than requirement and how to think about fatigue as continuous rather than categorical. The episode closes with a multifaceted question on REDs (relative energy deficiency in sport) — what it is, its warning signs, and the limits of what bloodwork can actually tell you.  Iron Culture is proudly presented by the MASS Research Review. The Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 1 (7.15) The Pointe Fire has burned nearly 50 acres up near Santa Clarita, but we’re not too worried — that area is firefighter country, with many of them living right there and battling hard to protect their own neighborhoods. Timmy warns listeners: If you love your current neighbors, never move — you have no idea how bad it can get with petty, gossiping people next door. In auction news, a massive T-Rex skeleton nicknamed “Gus” (about the size of a school bus) just sold at Sotheby’s for over $50 million. And fun fact: If you were born before the 1840s, you had no idea dinosaurs ever existed! Whip-around time — guess the opening music… that’s right, it’s “Growing Pains”! Former child star Ashley Johnson, who played little Chrissy Seaver, shared the wild story of surviving an attempted kidnapping while working on the show. The Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 4 (7.15) Someone (probably a billionaire) just dropped a cool $50 million on “Gus,” a 61% complete T-Rex skeleton unearthed on a ranch in South Dakota. Paleontologist Thomas Heitkamp and his team dug it up, and fun fact: Most dinosaur skeletons are privately owned these days. Timmy spins the classic “Growing Pains” theme song and shares the wild story from former child star Ashley Johnson (who played little Chrissy Seaver) about surviving an attempted kidnapping while working on the show around age seven. Longtime KFI board operator and sex therapist Sam Zia stops by the studio with a bag full of Hitachi Magic Wands, butt plugs and vibrators to say farewell before his big move to Spain — he’d just come from a three-day sex toy conference at the Burbank Marriott. And in a fun AI-powered focus group by SmartFocus.ai, seven out of eight virtual Californians voted against changing daylight-saving time — they want more sleep and hate getting up in the dark. Ep 382 - The Science of Building Bone (ft. Dr.Lora Giangregorio)

The Erics sit down with bone health expert Dr. Lora Giangregorio, a professor of kinesiology at the University of Waterloo, to unpack what's actually known about how bone adapts to resistance training. The conversation covers why bone changes so slowly, the many sources of measurement error in DEXA scans, and why so much of the exercise-and-bone literature is underpowered and hard to interpret. Dr. G makes a central practical case: for building bone, the message shouldn't be "lift heavy" but rather "work hard." Emphasizing high effort over intimidating absolute loads lowers the barrier to entry, especially for older and osteoporotic populations, while still driving progressive overload. She argues the best current bet is combining moderate-to-high-intensity resistance training with impact work, introduced gradually on a foundation of strength. Along the way she debunks popular but weakly supported interventions, including weighted vests and whole-body vibration platforms, and discusses the difference between biological aging and simple chronic inactivity in bone loss. Iron Culture is proudly presented by the MASS Research Review. Your Stupid Minds

Your Stupid Minds transitions seamlessly from Tammy and the T-Rex to the Roger Corman quickie dino picture Carnosaur, released mere weeks before Jurassic Park. This is the first in a double feature to answer the eternal question posed by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert: Carnosaur or Cop and a Half. Which is better? Dr. Jane Tiptree (Diane Ladd, yes, Laura Dern's mom) is an evil scientist who attempts to achieve the impossible dream we've all pondered from time to time: can a viral bioweapon developed from genetically modified chickens impregnate all women on the planet with dinosaur embryos in order to replace the human race? She puts her plan into action in the small town of Climax, Nevada. Everyone starts getting sick with a high fever, but it's only the women who give birth to dinosaurs (and die in the process). The dino puppets emerge and immediately begin murdering everyone, mostly local yokels such as "Slim" Friar (Clint Howard, yes, Bryce Dallas Howard's uncle) and a group of tree-hugging hippies protesting environmental destruction. Sheriff Fowler (Harrison Page) and "Doc" Smith (Raphael Sbarge) all try to solve the mystery. Meanwhile, the government swoops in hell-bent on containing the damage, so guys in haz-mat suits blast every infected person with M-16s. Can they find a cure? No. Even Tiptree puts her money where her mouth is and fatally delivers her own dino baby. Can they contain the virus? Also unclear, but I'm going to say no. But at least we get to see some fun dino puppets roaming around. And some locals kill a T-Rex with a forklift. So that's cool. As mentioned above, Siskel and Ebert had a passionate disagreement over Carnosaur. Siskel gave it a thumbs up while Ebert called it one of the worst of the year. Inversely, the next episode's movie, Cop and a Half, had the opposite result. This disagreement comes up repeatedly throughout their 1993 season.

The Marc Cox Morning Show opens with Ryan Wrecker filling in alongside Kim St. Onge, setting the tone with a Fourth of July weekend reflection rooted in faith, family, and patriotism, while also questioning MetroLink's new fare enforcement system and media narratives resurfacing old JD Vance commentary. Hour 1 takes a more serious turn as the conversation examines race relations in America and closes with a powerful discussion of Erika Kirk's resolve and forgiveness as she prepares to face her husband's accused killer, framing themes of faith, grief, and resilience. Hour 2 expands from local to global, covering Trump's reported influence in a World Cup red card controversy, JD Vance's patriotic holiday message, and St. Louis' downtown curfew crackdown, which Ryan and Kim argue reflects deeper cultural and parenting challenges. Dom Savino provides a business and culture update spanning record markets, a $19 million T-Rex fossil sale, and Hollywood's ongoing struggles, while Grant Salzman makes his “In Other News” debut with a mix of unusual and emotional stories ranging from Joey Chestnut's competitive eating return to a tragic Arizona hospital incident. Hour 3 focuses heavily on civic identity and ideological conflict, with JD Vance's “grace and greatness” message leading into legal analysis from Hans von Spakovsky on a Denver school board discrimination lawsuit. Dan Buck's “Buck Stops Here” segment emphasizes grassroots patriotism through his neighborhood flagpole initiative while warning against rising socialist and communist influence in American politics. Kim St. Onge closes the hour with a “Kim on a Whim” tying together grocery prices, global instability, and the Republican path toward the 2026 midterms. Hour 4 delivers a lighter but wide-ranging finale, opening with playful celebrity wedding speculation before shifting into a broader cultural critique of Hollywood through backlash against Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey trailer. Tom Ackerman joins with a sports-packed segment covering Team USA's World Cup run, officiating controversy, and the Cardinals' dominant win over the Cubs. The final stretch includes debate over Trump Accounts for children, questions surrounding a reported Paul Pelosi hit-and-run incident, FBI drone interceptions at World Cup venues, and a sign-off that blends humor, politics, sports, and pop culture to close the show. Across all four hours, the program weaves together themes of patriotism, accountability, cultural tension, faith, and everyday American life—balancing hard news with humor and commentary while staying anchored in common-sense conservative perspective. It's a tale as old as time. Boy meets girl. Girl's jealous ex-boyfriend beats up boy. Ex-boyfriend leaves boy in animal sanctuary. Boy is mauled by lion. Mad scientist puts boy's brain into robotic Tyrannosaurus rex. It's 1994's Tammy and the T-Rex, starring Denise Richards, Paul Walker, and George Pilgrim. As mentioned above, Tammy (Richards) and Michael (Walker) and are love. But Tammy's much older dirtbag boyfriend Billy (Pilgrim) (so it goes) and his gang of loyal hoodlums won't stop terrorizing them. After a terrifying standoff where the teenager and adult man refuse to let go of each others' genitals, Billy eventually gets the drop on Michael and causes him a vicious mauling. Meanwhile, evil doctor Dr. Wachenstein (Terry Kiser) and his super team of a weird German woman, tiny nerd, and muscle man have built a robot dinosaur. But the doctor doesn't want it to have a computer brain. He wants a real brain in this thing. So he kidnaps Michael's comatose body, and through a brain extraction that is eerily reminiscent of a Treehouse of Horror segment, the T-rex comes to life. After smushing the nerd and the muscle man, T-Rex Michael seeks revenge on Billy and his minions. He makes quick work of them and then the rest of the movie tries to figure out what it's about. Mostly car chases and shoot-outs with cops.
