Tune in as friend of the show Guy Bradford returns to his guest chair once again for a review and recap of Very Bad Things, the 1998 black comedy that follows the ludicrous and murderous consequences of a Las Vegas bachelor party gone tragically wrong. The different ways in which this movie's utterly ruthless and cynical sense of humor hits the hosts, trying to determine if this has any queer-coding going on, Urban Dictionary's various definitions of “flyboy,” and the cult leader vibe that Christian Slater exudes here comprise just a few of the topics for this episode. Written and directed by Peter Berg, Very Bad Things stars Jon Favreau, Christian Slater, Leland Orser, Jeremy Piven, Daniel Stern, Cameron Diaz, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tyler Cole Malinger, Joey Zimmerman, Kobe Tai, and Russell B. McKenzie. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: (Not) Derailing the LessOnline Puzzle Hunt, published by Error on June 4, 2024 on LessWrong. (spoiler alert: may meta-spoil future iterations of the LOPH, if you haven't already read other posts about it) I knew early on that I wouldn't be able to finish the LessOnline puzzle hunt. I contributed to solving two of the first six puzzles, each of which revealed the combination to a locked box. Each box contained wooden medallions for the solvers, plus a QR code. The QR codes led to the second layer of a larger meta-puzzle. On discovering the existence of the meta-puzzle, I knew I would have to drop out. It was a shame, because I have never done a puzzle hunt before and I could see that the puzzlemasters had produced something amazing. But the opportunity cost of playing "for real" was just too high. There were too many other things I wanted to do, and the integral of my attention over time is not infinite. So I stopped hunting. But, unexpectedly and hilariously, I ended up contributing to the game in a very different way. Suspicion During the Fooming Shoggoth concert I noticed (probably thanks to the song lyrics) that the parts of the puzzle I was aware of were all lockboxes. I mean, I knew that already, but now I noticed. And I knew from the contents of the two boxes I had opened that there was more to the puzzles than the obvious. The whole setup seemed like a suspiciously plausible metaphor for the AI Box Experiment. I suddenly, strongly suspected that the puzzle hunt had a hidden narrative -- one that would end with the release of a rogue AI. Sequence Breaker! So I did what any Less Wronger should have done: I tried to warn others. No unbinding of seals, no opening of gates! At first I just told nearby hunters directly, but quickly realized it wouldn't work; if nothing else, I didn't know who was working on the puzzle hunt and who wasn't. I abandoned that plan and asked the front desk to print out three notes for me. The notes outlined my suspicions and warned the reader not to open whatever final box might be found at the end of the puzzle chain. I taped Note 1 to my medallion, which I returned to its original box. In addition to the warning, Note 1 asked anyone opening the box to leave the medallion and the note itself for later hunters to see, and suggested they return their own medallion(s), just in case. I had no reason to believe it mattered whether the medallions stayed in the boxes, but I had no reason to believe it didn't, and it was an obvious thing to try. I taped Note 2 to the table by the lockboxes. Note 2 asked anyone who shared my suspicions to sign it, as social pressure on others to not open boxes that might contain Very Bad Things. Note 3 was a copy of note 2, and stayed in my backpack for contingencies. After placing the notes, I moved on to other things. I'd volunteered to run a talk the following day on a whim, and preparation funged against sleep. By the time I had the slide deck put together it was 4am. Before going to bed, I checked on my warning notes. Note 2 was gone. I'd thought of that possibility, which was why I had a contingency copy. Now I had to decide whether to use it. Crap. Decision Theory So far I'd been intentionally open about what I was doing. I told multiple hunters about both my suspicions and the notes. I showed Note 1 to a volunteer when placing it. Note 2 was in plain sight. I even had a staff member at the front desk print the notes for me. My in-character warnings to hunters doubled as an out-of-character warning to the puzzlemasters: "possible derailment in progress". I didn't want to actually ruin whatever awesomeness they had planned. I wanted to prevent hunters from opening the hypothetical final box if and only if that was the true win condition. The problem was that I didn't know -- and couldn't know -- whether th...

This week, we are returning to our well of dark comedies and misunderstood misfit movies to analyze one of the darkest comedies to come out of the "edgy" and "extreme" 1990's- Very Bad Things. A movie that plays to the trope of a bachelor party gone horribly horribly wrong and illustrates the lengths that people will go to avoid consequences. Starring Daniel Stern of Home Alone fame, future Iron Man Director and Star Wars Savior John Favreau, and a very sinister Christian Slater, this movie was deridded by critics during it's original run, but is it really that awful? In this episode we talk about Very Bad Things!
Very Bad Things Welcome to The Guys Review, where we review media, products and experiences. **READ APPLE REVIEWS/Fan Mail**Mention Twitter DM group - like pinned tweet @The_GuysReviewRead emails theguysreviewpod@gmail.comTwitter Poll Very Bad Things Written and Directed by: Peter Berg (Directed, acted and produced a lot of things; directed Hancock, Battleship, Friday Night Lights; wrote and directed Lone Survivor) Starring: Christian SlaterCameron DiazDaniel SternJeanne TripplehornJon FavreauJeremy PivenLeland Orser Released: November 25, 1998 Budget: $30M (estimated) ($52.2M in 2022) Box Office: $21M ($36.6M in 2022) Ratings: IMDb 6.3/10 Rotten Tomatoes 41% Metacritic 31% Google Users 71% First time you saw the movie? Plot: -I would marry 1998 Cameron Diaz-Christian Slater is always slimy.-The old troupe of the woman planning everything, being stressed, getting on him about wedding stuff, and then breaking a few days before the wedding, she doesn't like some of his friends. Awesome. Then making him profess his love.-How 90's to record them waving goodbye.-Pretty formulaic, wedding, bachelor party antics... drinking, smoking, not sure about the drugs though.-That stripper is pretty hot... But I don't get Kyle saying "I can't do this"... Its not implied that he would fuck the stripper, just get a dance. Nothing wrong with that.-That's a way to kill someone-I don't like it when Christian Slater makes a good point about concealing an accidental murder.-That security guy could've made it so much easier on himself... Poor guy. Why would you stab him with a cork screw?-The movie is billed a black comedy, but it's not funny. The situation is mildy humorous, but its mostly just dark.-Can you imagine drinking that much, doing that many drugs, then having to just stop and start cleaning everything up? (Triple Lindy)-The burial and body re-arrangement was... Interesting. I'd like to think we'd be more functional than those guys.-That whole overreaction at the gas station about Whizzers and his paranoia is weird.-Who would break like Adam did at the rehearsal dinner?-Wow... Michael killing Adam.-How many troop rallying speeches does Boyd have in him? This one he has to accentuate with a kiss, though. I think I would punch someone-Michael mounting Adams wife at the funeral is a weird tonal shift, and the whole overreaction during the funeral. It hard waffles from SUPER dark "comedy" to this almost slapstick, over the top, trying to be funny.-Blaming Adam for sleeping with a prostitute is interesting... Could work.-Boyd attacking Lois is unwarranted, but I love her self defense and biting his dick.-Boyd then killing Michael, framing him for Lois' murder is DARK.-Laura being morally superior to Kyle, calling his friends 'jackasses' and only caring about the wedding is just so disconnected. She doesn't care anyone was killed, just that her wedding will happen? Strange. We are jackasses messing around, none of us are murderers... That's a bit more than a jackass.-Boyd attacking Fish for insurance money; then Laura killing him telling him to get to the wedding... Wow.-Of course Moore accidentally kills Boyd... Should've been Fish somehow though.-Jesus... Laura is cold as fuck... Just kill Moore and the dog, too?-Why did they dig up the other bodies?-It's darkly funny they crash thinking about the other guys.-You can see Jon Favreaus feet under the wheelchair-Those kids are little assholes-Laura is just a shitty person, having her break down. Top Five Trivia of the movie: Top 5 Trivia 1) Adam Sandler was originally cast as Michael Berkow but dropped out at the last minute to make The Waterboy (1998). Jeremy Piven took the role.2) The word " fuck " is said 124 times through the movie.3) Alan Dershowitz, the then-respected Harvard Law School professor, had a column for a few years in the late 1990's with PREMIERE magazine in which he analyzed possible legal issues arising from new movies. In this film's case, Dershowitz said that a strong case could be made that the prostitute's death was an accident or involuntary manslaughter, though the huge amount of drugs in the suite would complicate that (and would leave the guys open to major prison time via the DEA). However, he said that all of the men would be charged with first-degree murder anyway because of the deliberate stabbing death of the hotel security guard.4) While the guys are trying to get rid of the dead body, Christian Slater's character is asked incredulously "Have you ever done this before?" The same thing was asked of him in Heathers (1988) when he is trying to cover up an accidental suicide that he manipulated. In both films, he hears the question, then pointedly does not answer it.5) The weekend of the night in Vegas can be worked out due to the guys watching UFC 10 on pay-per-view: July 12, 1996. The background shows Don Frye vs. Brian Johnston. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. Spinning Out (another music podcast) We talk to artists about their favorite albums and go on wild tangents. This week's guest is my new friend Phil Ward aka Lord Warddd. We chatted about the 1984 hip-hop compilation Street Sounds Electro 4. Once again, I've broken my personal rule of covering compilations, but this was too interesting to pass up. Street Sounds Electro 4 isn't available for streaming on Spotify, but you can check out the full compilation here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b37WCOv3QWU Phil talks about how influential this compilation was in his musical journey, and opens my mind about early hip-hop, techno, electro, dance music, as well as Northern Soul. Phil also was in the band, Lo Fidelity Allstars, in the mid to late 90s. They are most known for their 1998 debut album, "How to Operate With a Blown Mind," which featured the song "Battle Flag", featuring Pigeonhed. That song was featured on tv shows such as ER, Sopranos, and films such as, Coyote Ugly, Very Bad Things, Drillbit Taylor and much more. Phil Ward makes music under the name Lord Warddd, which recently released an "The Virtual Bison EP," on Plastic Miracles records. Check that out here! https://lordwarddd.bandcamp.com/album/the-virtual-bison-ep

Voila! Episode V, though slightly delayed, is va-va-vooming into the void! Live vicariously through us as we discuss V For Vendetta and Very Bad Things. Tangents include Eric listening to (now defunct, but still VERY incredible) podcast 'Half Hour Happy Hour: Ladies Night', but he was so far behind he's just now into March 2020 when COVID-19 was kicking off, and it's incredible how misinformed we were as citizens of the world, and how much faith we put in the world's governments to get this sorted out quickly. Let this be a parallel lesson about trusting governments, which relates SOOOO well to the plot of V For Vendetta. Sidebar to that, we discuss the Presidency of that who shall not be named, and how that regime also parallels to the film. We also discuss how homosexuality is NOT a choice, and we CANNOT believe that people are persecuted for it, (more unfortunate parallels from the real world to V For Vendetta). Then, Eric keeps making bad movie decisions, not vetting yet another movie before presenting it to the pod for discussion, as we get into "very bad movie", Very Bad Things. We pretty much go beat by beat and still get through it in around 30 minutes, there is VERY little substance to this film, and Dylan voices his displeasure by saying VERY little. Hopefully next week I'll be in new "uniform", the t-shirt of Dylan's head grenade...if it turns out well, I'll let you know how to obtain our MERCH! Vindicate & validate us by following on Twitter, @FileUnderPod, e-mail verbose versions of vile rhetoric at FileUnderPod@gmail.com. Rate, review, etc. on your pod follower of choice, and join us next week for another version of Villains & Vagrants....

In which the end of Dry January hits me hard, and I share details of hangovers I have known and loved; reminisce over the most middle class drinking session ever; discuss why Blue Curacao and Cointreau are Very Bad Things; demonstrate the world's worst seduction technique; share the drinking moment from my student days that I still feel deep-seated guilt over now; get absolutely livid with insomnia and the utterly ludicrous process of falling asleep; we find ourselves stuck in Lockdown Groundhog Day; and Beth makes banana bread. Badly.
“Insane” doesn't even begin to describe the 1998 black-comedy Very Bad Things. Violent deaths, unlikable characters, and bizarre music choices are just some of the factors that make this film a truly “seeing is believing” situation - and not in a good way. Welcome back FMBuffs. This week Nick makes a pick on that movie jukebox and pulls out perennial podcast darling Peter Berg's 1998 debut directorial feature Very Bad Things. In a rare episode the boys are somewhat split on what exactly to laugh at in this pitch-black mean spirited comedy, but as usual there's time for a sidebar on Boogie Nights, Christian Slater's criminal record, and a chance for the boys to flex their esoteric knowledge of early 2000's sitcoms. Next Week: we head to the swingin' 60's with Wait Until Dark
This week the boys unearth Andrei Konchalovsky's Shakespearean superthiller: Runaway Train. It's love at first sight for the FMB; the film aims for the heavens and this episode is packed to the gills with discussions on themes, Jon Voight's nuclear performance, inevitable comparisons to Snowpiercer and strangely enough, some light-to-heavy criticism of John Carpenters body of work. Next week we revisit Peter Berg's debut with "Very Bad Things".
AH...

Make sure you adjust your oxygen mask before assisting others this week, because Allie and Sam are breaking down the new Boeing 737s that crash all the time. Then, freak out about Woodstock '99, which was all the dirt of the original Woodstock but none of the peace and love. It's a double header of Very Bad Things, guaranteed to make you Stay Horrified.
Join me and listen along as I watch and comment on the 1998 film Very Bad Things. This film is another one of my personal favorites. A seemingly benign bachelor party takes a dark turn and everything is down hill from there. Christian Slater plays a great sociopath, delivering chilling monologues and stealing the film. Jon Favreau is a fairly normal guy who is about to get married, but is yet to realize he's in over his head. Daniel Stern and Jeremy Piven play brothers deeply entrenched in a sibling rivalry which doesn't fair well for either of them. I hope you enjoy the show. Thanks for listening. Show Rundown: In this week’s episode, Juan Uriarte from the Instant Ramen podcast joins us to talk about “Car 3” and the Pixar’s film track record. Is “Cars 3” a hit like “Inside Out,” or is it more of a “Cars 2?” We talk about that. In our second segment. we review the first big comedy of the summer, “Rough Night,” starring Scarlett Johansson and Kate McKinnon. And finally we end our show with what we’re dorking out about this week. We’ve got a lot to talk about, so let’s get this podcast started. Topic 1: Cars 3 and the Decline of Pixar Chris' Intro: In my movie going life, I have witnessed three game-changing developments in film which tower above all others. The first was Star Wars in 1977, which lead to the corporatization of blockbusters which reverberates to this day. Another is the release of Iron Man and the idea a movie can not just live on its own, but a series of different movies can create a greater whole than the sum of its parts. But in between these two events was another, no less magical arrival. It was the 1995 release of Toy Story by Pixar, and the revelation to the world the Pixar Animation Studios has been. From the first Toy Story, Pixar’s ability to create delightful, wondrous, endearing and often meaningful was something unseen in Hollywood since Walt Disney first revealed Mickey Mouse to the world. Let’s just consider this run. 1995 saw Toy Story. Next was Bug’s Life, then Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, Wall E, Up, and Toy Story 3. But everything beautiful that begins has some end. While Pixar seemed to have invented a system to pump out classic after classic, with the arrival of Cars 3, to say nothing of The Good Dinosaur or Monsters University or Cars 2 or, or, or… it’s apparent the glory days of Pixar are over. So we have come to talk about Cars 3, praise Pixar, and discuss what this studio means to us, and how it might regain its glory. Topic 2: Rough Night Review Sonia's Intro: “Rough Night,” starring Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Zoe Kravitz, Ilana Glazer and Jillian Bell, is the first of two comedies this summer about a bunch of women going on a trip and going wild. “Girls Trip,” starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Queen Latifah, comes out in July. “Rough Night” is about a group of college friends are reunited for a bachelorette party. But it’s not all drinking and silly bachelorette party games when they accidentally kill a stripper. It mixes body shots with a dead body. It’s like 1998’s “Very Bad Things” but it’s not nearly dark. “Rough Night” is way goofier than that. I went with my sister and one of my best friends. We are the target audience for this movie, and we were disappointed. It just wasn’t funny enough. I don’t want to say that women want certain kinds of movies and men want certain kinds of movies, but after this movie we all thought the same thing, which was we wanted to see this movie without the accidental murder of a stripper. That part of comedy just didn’t work for us. But we really enjoyed the beginning of the movie with all the friends getting together, joking and drinking and being ridiculous. We enjoyed the part about college friends getting together as adults and trying to party like they used to. The murder plot line just didn’t work for us. “Rough Night” only earned $8 million this past weekend, which is far below expectations. I think part of the reason this movie didn’t connect with the audience that made “Bad Moms” a sleeper box office hit last year is that stripper movie plot. I think the target audience for “Rough Night” isn’t interested in a goofy comedy about women accidentally killing a stripper. Of course, I can’t speak for all women. That’s just what we thought. Smith, what did you think of “Rough Night?” What We’re Dorking Out About This Week: Joel Schumacher Apologizes For ‘Batman & Robin’ http://www.cnn.com/2017/06/14/entertainment/joel-schumacher-batman-robin/index.html?sr=twCNN061517joel-schumacher-batman-robin0331AMVODtopPhoto&linkId=38717488 The Official Reason for Star Trek Discovery’s Delay: ‘World building is hard’ http://io9.gizmodo.com/the-official-reason-for-star-trek-discoverys-many-dela-1796237580 Dorking Out's 40th Anniversary Show Find The Dorking Out Show here... Join us for Trailer Park Podcast 80 as we welcome some new blood. Nathan, Daniel, Amanda, The Intern and honored guest Cordell weigh in on the reboot of The Mummy starring everyone's favorite Operating Thetan Tom Cruise and the launch of the Dark Cinematic Universe. The Bad Batch could be an alternate name for the cast of Trailer Park Podcast but it is also a movie about a dystopian cannibal cult and Keanu Reeves appears to be leading it while sporting a mustache and wearing a housecoat. The fulcrum is called Replace as in replacing... your skin; with other people's skin. Rough Night looks like an all female reboot of Very Bad Things and could be a very good thing. Finally, The Beguiled rounds out the lineup and is a second attempt to adapt the novel by Thomas Cullinan about a wounded soldier that is taken in by a group of women and it leads to an "unexpected turn of events" which we interpret as "how much action does he get and how much does it cost him". Stick around for the Burden List and the Intern Archive Update.

Every year, we make a wager on which movies will make the most money during the summer movie season. In this episode, we will argue about who will be the big winners at the box office. Play along and let us know which movies you think will be the top 10 of the summer. Featuring: Abi Porter, Josh Porter, Matt Hughes, Patrick Porter, and Tyler Hanns. Spoilers: Prometheus and Very Bad Things
Body takes place on Christmas Eve. It doesn't seem particularly holiday-related but whatever. Your reliably grumpy and seemingly impossible to please host is unsurprisingly frustrated by this indie thriller that owes much of its plot to Very Bad Things. I only wish it was half as funny. Or well written. One of these days I'll have another unqualified recommendation, I promise! (uncertain shifty eyes)
Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross excoriate Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. This episode isn't for the faint of heart... What started out as a well-intentioned desire to talk about a beloved action-adventure game turned into a hit piece against an entire era and genre of games. But we cite our sources, and go to great pains to remind you: Just because we don't like this game doesn't mean we don't like you. Another episode where I talk about another child o' mine.... This month is my only daughter, Alexis Grace Moss. Also, I do a review of the movie Very Bad Things starring Cameron Diaz, Jon Favreau and Christian Slater. Also the first part of mine and Shag's talk about comics from the 'Golden Age of Comics', the late 80's to mid 90's. Make sure to rate us on iTunes and while you're at it... tell a friend.

It's wedding season! And what better way to celebrate than to watch 2 movies that illustrate the sometimes hilarious (and sometimes much less hilarious) realities of the process of getting hitched: the new-in-theaters Bridesmaids and the 1998 dark comedy Very Bad Things! We discuss the awesomeness of Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy, water/laser weddings, Cameron Diaz, the legacy of Jeremy Piven, half-Golden Globe noms, our own wedding party experiences and much more. We even spontaneously break into one of our fave 80's sitcom theme songs right at the beginning! AND all this public embarrassment is TOTALLY FREE. Warning though: this podcast episode is generously sponsored by alcohol (or "ow-ow-ow-cohol") and rated PG-13 due to the fact that we talk a ton about the (very, very, very, very) bad things done in Very Bad Things! Hint: it involves hookers, dismemberment and the fact that Krissy can't trust Justin's movie-choosing skills anymore. Wah waaaaaah... :(
In this second installment of Wedding Month, Desmond and Megan celebrate their anniversary by taking in 1999's Runaway Bride and 1998's Very Bad Things. The troubles begin in the synopsis. Desmond audibly sighs. Megan wants a fluff. What happens when the accidental death of a hooker is the most lighthearted thing in a comedy? The hosts talk about eggs - a lot. Megan uses words like "schmaltzy" and "super-anal." Wait, Jon Favreau and Jeremy Piven aren't the same person? And in amongst all this, somehow two movies get reviewed.
