Some of you may remember Christopher Reeve, the actor who famously played Superman back in the day. He truly embodied strength and vitality. But during a horseback riding accident, he suffered a devastating injury at the very top of his neck—between the first two cervical bones. That injury didn't damage his lungs. It didn't injure his heart. It didn't harm his digestive organs.Instead, it cut off the nerve supply at the top, and as a result, his entire body below the neck was affected. Breathing required a ventilator. Digestion required assistance. Movement was lost. Why does that matter to you—and what does it have to do with chiropractic?Let me explain it this way.
⚙️ Arthritis Isn't Random—It's MechanicalIf arthritis were simply caused by age, then every disc in your spine—being the same age—would wear down equally. But that's not what we see.I'll often show patients their X-rays and point out something like this:C5–C6: Disc thinning, bone spurs, degenerationC2–C3: Looks greatSame person.Same age.Same spine. So, what gives? At some point, a misalignment (subluxation) occurred at that segment, changing how it moved—and more importantly, how it didn't move.
Back pain is one of the most common causes of reduced mobility and loss of independence as we age. In this episode, spine surgeon Dr. Gbolahan Okubadejo explains the causes of back and neck pain, when conservative treatment is appropriate, and when spine surgery may become the best option for restoring mobility and quality of life. Chronic back and neck often trigger fear. Many people assume pain is inevitable, that surgery always leads to long downtime, or that recovery means permanent limitation. In this episode, we explore modern advances in spine care, recovery, and how the right mindset and preparation can help people reclaim movement, confidence, and independence at any age. Dr. Gbolahan Okubadejo is a board-certified, fellowship-trained spinal and orthopedic surgeon and founder of the Institute for Comprehensive Spine Care, with offices across New York and New Jersey. A graduate of Brown University and Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, he completed his orthopedic residency at Washington University in St. Louis and a spine fellowship at UPMC. He is also the creator of the 360 Dynamized Core system for spine-safe core strengthening. When dealing with lower back pain or a herniated disc, it is incredibly common to seek out quick relief through popular stretches like Child's pose or pulling your knees to your chest. While these movements might provide a temporary soothing sensation, they are fundamentally counterproductive to the healing process. These flexion-based stretches force the spine into a rounded position, directly aggravating the injured tissues and reinforcing the exact mechanical strain that likely caused the disc injury in the first place. To understand why this happens, we have to look at modern daily habits. The average adult spends approximately 9.5 hours a day sitting. This prolonged seated posture flattens the natural curve of the lumbar spine, placing an immense, sustained load on the lower spinal segments, most notably at the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels. When you try to "fix" the stiffness from sitting by performing deep forward-bending stretches, you are simply compounding the flexion load on an already vulnerable and irritated herniated disc, preventing the ligamentous tissue from truly healing. Instead of chasing fleeting symptom relief through stretching, long-term recovery demands a shift in strategy. A successful rehabilitation programme requires you to move away from passive mobility work and focus entirely on active spine stability. By learning to maintain a neutral spine and progressively increasing your load-bearing capacity through structured, aggravation-free exercise, you can rebuild the strength and resilience of your lower back, fixing the root cause of the problem rather than just managing the symptoms.Key Topics Covered⚠️ The Danger of Flexion Stretches: Why movements like Child's pose and knee hugs may offer a brief illusion of relief while actively aggravating a herniated disc and delaying your recovery.

Why does chronic pain return even after months of physical therapy and exercise? Today I sit down with chronic joint and back pain specialist Bonnie Ryckova to uncover the missing link in injury recovery.Bonnie shares her powerful journey from childhood trauma and multiple accidents to discovering the "layers of compensation" the body builds over decades. Learn why traditional strengthening exercises often fail when the body is stuck in a fight-or-flight response and how nervous system regulation can finally break the cycle of painful flare-ups. This conversation offers a roadmap to move from "fixing" your body to partnering with it for lasting relief.Key Highlights & Timestamps03:09 The "Dissociation" of Injury: Bonnie describes the psychological impact of her first childhood injury, explaining how a plaster cast led to a feeling of disconnection from her own limb, a common side effect of physical trauma.05:17 The Hidden Impact of Childhood Accidents: A detailed look at how a "minor" accident at age 10 created a "rotational" compensation in Bonnie's pelvis that stayed with her for decades, despite X-rays showing nothing was broken.14:26 Trauma Processing vs. Physical Fixing: Following a car accident in her 30s, Bonnie explains the pivotal moment she realized that physical exercise alone couldn't heal her because the emotional trauma of the impact hadn't been processed.20:05 The "Layers of Compensation": A breakdown of how the body adapts over time. Bonnie explains that the demands we put on our bodies (career changes, travel, stress) add "layers" to old injuries, making standard physical therapy less effective over time.22:34 Nervous System "Fight or Flight" in Fitness: Bonnie discusses the irony of the fitness industry, where high-intensity "hustle" can actually prevent healing by keeping the nervous system in a constant state of threat.31:18 Learning to Listen to "Body Guidance": Bonnie shares her method of lying on the floor and allowing the body to lead the movement (rocking, pelvic tilts) rather than following a rigid exercise protocol.41:09 The "Silent" Rib Cage Breath: A step-by-step tutorial on the specific breathing technique Bonnie uses to expand the thoracic spine, relax the jaw, and signal safety to the brain to stop a pain flare-up.Bonnie's Bio Bonnie is a Chronic Joint and Back Pain Specialist who works with people whose pain keeps returning despite physiotherapy and exercise. Her work focuses on understanding how the body has adapted over time and where load is no longer shared evenly. Her background includes biomechanics, clinical Pilates and postural therapy, alongside lived experience of chronic pain, hypermobility, and injury recovery. This informs a way of working that is structured, body-led, and realistic, prioritising clarity before action. Her work has been featured in Forbes (2024), 30 Day Health Magazine (2025), and The I-Paper (2026). In this episode of Med Tech Gurus, we welcome Neil Klompas, Chief Executive Officer of Augurex Life Sciences. With more than two decades of experience leading companies at the intersection of diagnostics, rheumatology, and translational medicine, Neil is pioneering a new era of autoimmune biomarker discovery. Under his leadership, Augurex developed SpineStat, the world's first blood test designed to identify axial spondyloarthritis (AxSpA)—a chronic inflammatory spinal disease that affects millions yet often goes undiagnosed for nearly a decade. By leveraging the anti-14-3-3η autoantibody in combination with CRP, SpineStat is helping clinicians detect disease earlier, prevent irreversible spinal damage, and even reduce opioid dependence through faster, targeted treatment. Neil shares how engaging early with regulators helped Augurex earn FDA Breakthrough Device Designation, why he believes rheumatology is poised for its "oncology moment," and how keeping his team centered on the patient journey drives innovation every day. If you're passionate about precision diagnostics, regulatory navigation, and building mission-driven teams, this episode is a masterclass in turning unmet medical need into measurable clinical impact.

Learn how to JournalSpeak ➡️ LEARN HOW: https://tinyurl.com/2ph33u2s In this week's episode, I sit down with Peter Heymann, a coach in our BreakAwake community and a beautiful example of what is possible when someone is willing to do the real work. Peter recovered fully from chronic back pain using this work, and what makes his story especially powerful is how deeply it intersects with the way boys and men are conditioned in our culture. We talk about “the man box” — the unspoken rules so many boys are raised with: don't cry, tough it out, man up. When we teach boys to disconnect from their emotional lives, we don't eliminate their feelings, we just drive them underground. And the body keeps score. Peter shares how inner child work helped him reconnect with younger parts of himself that had been silenced for decades, and how that reconnection was one of the missing links in resolving his pain. This conversation is tender, honest, and incredibly important — especially for those of us raising boys, loving men, or trying to unlearn our own inherited rules about strength and vulnerability. Peter speaks candidly about fatherhood, emotional literacy, and what it means to model something different for the next generation. His back pain is completely resolved, but even more meaningful is the freedom he feels inside himself. And I'm so thrilled he'll be joining us again at the Omega Institute this June for his second summer with our community, witnessing people step out of fear and into their lives. They unpack why back pain, knee pain, and joint degeneration are rarely isolated problems, and why treating one body part without addressing sleep, nutrition, inflammation, stress, and biomechanics often leads to temporary relief instead of lasting change. They discuss regenerative approaches like PRP and other orthobiologic therapies, metabolic optimization before procedures, laser therapy, nervous system balance, and what it really takes to create an environment where healing can occur.“If you're going to put something powerful back into your body, make sure the environment you're putting it into is ready.”This conversation challenges the quick-fix mindset and reframes pain as part of a bigger story. Send a textLow back pain is rarely just about the back.In this solo episode, I walk through what truly matters when you're trying to solve persistent lumbar issues — whether you're a practitioner guiding others or someone navigating it yourself. There are three primary drivers I consistently see:1️⃣ Manage the Client's State If the threat bucket is overflowing, nothing else sticks. Downregulation isn't optional — it's foundational.2️⃣ Build Spinal Capability and Capacity The lumbar spine cannot carry the entire load. We need equitable distribution of force across the entire spinal system, with progressive exposure to real-world demands.3️⃣ Restore Movement Intelligence The brain won't access what it doesn't recognize. Using principles from motor learning — self-organization, ecological dynamics, and constraints-based learning — we must re-establish movement quality, quantity, and strategy based on the client's actual goals. And we cannot ignore the hips and thoracic spine. My interview with Mariel started out as a success story - because she is! Mariel was so debilitated with pain that she was actively contemplating ending her life, and now she is amazing with 80% of her severe pain gone. But as we continued with the conversation, it became clear that a RTH was in store, in order to give Mariel all the tools she needs to thrive for a lifetime. Pain, as you may recall, is but an entry point - an invitation to the precipice of the truths that have been awaiting our acknowledgment. Mariel has some work to do, but she is in a great space to do it, and I am thrilled to help her. Enjoy this heartfelt and deep Real Time Heal. xoxo n. Leaking urine? Painful sex? Constipation? TMJ? Back Pain? They can all be related to the musculoskeletal or genitourinary syndrome of menopause. Simply, tightness and/or dysfunction in the pelvic floor. In this interview, Andrea Donsky, a nutritionist, published menopause researcher, author, menopause educator, and co-founder of wearemorphus.com, talks with Jana Danielson, a wellness entrepreneur, Pilates educator, and creator of the Cooch Ball pelvic floor training tool.Topics:Pelvic Health and the Body's Connection: The discussion of how the pelvic floor is an integrated structure, not a standalone group of muscles. The Pelvic Floor and Core: The interview explains the anatomy of the pelvic floor and how it can function optimally (watch it on YouTube for visuals). The Importance of Breathing and Posture: A core theme is that breathing is the most fundamental pelvic floor strategy, and optimal posture is also key to pelvic floor function.Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and Misconceptions: Jana challenges the belief that dysfunction is "normal" during aging, stating that "common is not normal." Stressing that a too-tight (hypertonic) muscle is just as dysfunctional as a weak one.The Cooch Ball and the Release-Rebuild Method: The Cooch Ball method focuses on 30 days of "release only" to promote blood flow to the tissue, followed by a rebuild phase using exercises that integrate the pelvic floor with other muscles in the body.Impact on Libido and Orgasm: Andrea and Jana discuss how improving blood flow and releasing tension in the pelvic tissues can increase libido and the ability to have pleasure. The Pudendal Nerve and Shame: The Latin root of the word "pudendal" means "an area of shame", and this emotional context is connected to the lack of discussion and understanding of pelvic health.Links:Cooch Ball For Women: https://bit.ly/4qGRF3O Cooch Ball For Men: https://bit.ly/402Arme (great for men experiencing erectile dysfunction or dribbling)Pelvic Health Survey: https://forms.gle/RXM4BpFLtgP5m8nD9 Send a text ======Morphus: Menopause Reimagine

Brent Ness, CEO and President of Aclarion, highlights the challenges of diagnosing and treating chronic lower back pain, a leading driver of healthcare costs and opioid addiction. Traditional MRI and CT imaging do not reveal the biochemical source of pain within spinal discs, leading to misdiagnosis and unsuccessful treatment. The Aclarion technology uses MR spectroscopy to measure pain-causing biomarkers and, through a cloud-based, AI-powered SaaS model, analyzes the raw data and sends the physician a report within minutes. Brent explains, "The diagnosis and accurate treatment planning of back pain are incredibly complex. And when you think about pain management physicians, rehab, all the way up to spine surgery identifying the source of pain accurately leads to better treatment and then obviously better outcomes. There are 266 million people around the world who suffer from chronic low back pain. So I'm not talking about the kind that you had a rough weekend skiing, golfing, or hiking, and you're a little sore. I'm talking about the kind that keeps people from participating in a meaningful life. " "When you think about the joints and the sources of blood flow, the nerves that are all around your spinal cord, the vertebral columns, and there's just a lot of moving parts and a lot of really, let's just call it high-value real estate that can actually be the source of pain. And really, our superpower is to help physicians see the invisible. Meaning that normally when you go to the doctor, and they do a workup on you, they'll use an MRI or a CT scanner. And those modalities are really good at pinpointing anatomical issues that might be causing pain. What we do is we use MR spectroscopy, not to make a picture of your back, but rather to measure the biomarker content inside the discs that are invisible on a normal MRI. And as it turns out, what's inside your disc can actually be the source of pain." #ACON #CLARITYtrial #lowbackpain #spinesurgery #MRSpectroscopy #Biomarkers #AugmentedIntelligence #innovation #ChronicPain #BackPain #MedicalTechnology #AI #HealthcareInnovation #SpineCare #MRI #PainManagement #DigitalHealth #Diagnostics #HealthTech #PatientCare aclarion.com Listen to the podcast here

What if you finally reach the peak of your career—only to have your body shut it down? Why are so many dentists forced to cancel clinics, not because of burnout or skill, but because of crippling back pain? And what if this “expected hazard of dentistry” didn't actually have to be inevitable? In this episode, Dr. Aniko Ball joins Jaz to challenge the long-held belief that chronic pain is just part of being a dentist. As an expert in dental ergonomics and the Alexander Technique, she reveals why so many clinicians are unknowingly damaging their bodies every single day—and how simple, overlooked changes can completely transform career longevity. The mission for this episode was simple: deliver five genuinely life-changing, immediately actionable tips to protect your neck, back, and future. No fluff. No theory for theory's sake. Just practical changes you can implement straight away—starting from your very next clinic session. If your health matters to you as much as your dentistry, this is an unmissable episode. https://youtu.be/u7hEOPpEsGA Watch PDP27 on Youtube Protrusive Dental Pearl: Cut toxic noise, protect time for your health, and optimize the small habits you repeat daily. You only rotate ~10–13 meals—upgrade those, move a little more, sleep a little better. Small, consistent upgrades compound into an unrecognisable year. Key Takeaways: Back pain in dentistry is not inevitable—it is largely the result of cumulative postural habits. Most dental pain comes from holding positions the body was never designed to hold, not from single traumatic events. Lifting the elbow or shoulder for prolonged periods activates movement muscles, guaranteeing shoulder and upper back pain. A finger rest must be used on the non-dominant hand holding the mirror, not just the dominant hand. Hovering the mirror is equivalent to holding the arm raised against gravity. The spine is not designed for sustained bending or twisting, even slightly. Staying vertical is critical—move the patient and the chair, not your spine. Traditional loupes often force neck flexion; refractive loupes or microscopes allow upright posture and straight-ahead vision. Stool height matters: hips slightly higher than knees, feet flat, heels fully released into the floor. If leg weight isn't given to the floor, the lower back absorbs the load instead. Habits outside the clinic—especially looking down at a mobile phone—train the same harmful postural patterns used in dentistry. Postural change feels strange at first because bad habits feel comfortable, even when they are damaging. Real change requires habit interruption, repetition, and support over several weeks. Your body is your most important instrument—protecting it protects your career. The first time I spoke to Dani on this podcast (ep #66) she was in the midst of an awakening - for the first time in 3 years (when at times she'd been in a wheelchair to manage her back pain) she had been pain free for a number of weeks, and she was astounded. This did not happen by chance. Dani is a warrior for the work, and she didn't turn her back on the willingness to believe that this could work for her. Nine months later, Dani's whole life has transformed. Not only did she travel to India to receive her Yoga Teacher Training, but she utilized her graphic design skills and TMS knowledge to create a whole beautiful website dedicated to healing: www.mytmsjourney.com. On her site is a link to her new therapeutic yoga classes, which I hear are phenomenal (and will now be attending despite my panic that I can't do yoga because I'm not bendy!) Members of my community receive their first class completely free. Use code: JOURNALSPEAK. Enjoy Dani's story, insight, and energy. It's such a privilege to walk the path with all of you badass healers. XOOX n. This episode originally aired on October 23, 2020.
