He was found lying near the entrance of the parking deck and was taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center's intensive care unit. Police reported that there was no evidence of foul play. Douthit has committed to play football at Samford and had over 20 college offers. Creekview grad K.J. Jenkins, a senior reserve guard and the best outside shooter on New Mexico's basketball team, has entered the NCAA's transfer portal to play for another program for his last season of college eligibility. Jenkins averaged 7.4 points per game and his 43.6% 3-point shooting was the best on the team for the season, and his 55.4% three-point percentage in conference play was the best shooting ever by a Lobo in Mountain West play. However, despite his skills from the outside, the Lobos had an offense predicated on playing in the paint, and three-pointers accounted for just 26.7% of UNM's shot attempts. He is the second Lobo this week to enter the transfer portal along with senior wing Emmanuel Kuac, who had each of the past two seasons cut short with season-ending leg injuries. Bestselling author Karen White is releasing “The House on Prytania Street,” the second novel in her Royal Street spin-off series, on May 9. The book follows a strong heroine in New Orleans as she tries to restart her life, with a plot involving a thriller ghost mystery and romance. White aims to create character-driven stories about Southern women with “grit” and explores themes of survival and family. White has planned the series to allow readers to pick up any book out of chronological order and dive into the plot blindly. White will hold a book signing event in Woodstock, Georgia, on May 9.Top of Form Edward "Jay" Lionel Ball, a Woodstock man, has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for multiple drug charges including distributing methamphetamine and manufacturing heroin. Ball was found guilty by a Cherokee County jury and sentenced by Superior Court Judge David Cannon Jr. as a recidivist, meaning he will serve the entire prison portion of his sentence without parole eligibility. The charges stem from a Cherokee Multi-Agency Narcotics Squad investigation initiated in response to a tip about a man named Reginald Jerome Foster selling methamphetamine in Cherokee County. During the investigation, agents observed Ball supplying Foster with methamphetamine and heroin. Law enforcement later executed a search warrant and discovered nearly a pound of heroin in Ball's rented house, along with methamphetamine, scales, and baggies used for distribution, and handguns and ammunition. Ball's co-defendants, Reginald Jerome Foster and Katie Marissa Zepeta, were also charged and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia Senate have passed two bills that would dissolve the current Cherokee County board of elections, replacing it with a new board appointed under a new process. If signed into law, most elections board members would be appointed by the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners. Currently, the local Republican and Democratic parties appoint two members each, and the chair is chosen by the other four members of the elections board. The passing of the bills comes after a lawsuit questioning the current system's “constitutionality." Lawmakers believe that the bill should not affect voters when going to the polls to cast a vote. One month after Creekview parted ways with longtime boys basketball coach Casey Gramling, the school found its new coach in Denmark's Tyler Whitlock. He added region championships in 2019 and 2020, with a 96-50 record over the last five seasons since starting the Danes' program. Whitlock led Denmark to the Class AAAAAAA playoffs this past season with a 16-12 overall record and a 7-3 mark in Region 6AAAAAAA. The Danes fell 54-50 to Osborne in the first round. Creekview and Denmark met once in 2022-23, with the Grizzlies winning 55-49. The Danes prided themselves on defense and physicality during Whitlock's time as coach, a mentality he plans to instill at Creekview. The Canton City Council has denied a request for a townhome neighborhood at Prominence Point Parkway The Georgia Department of Education has awarded $22,307 to eight Cherokee County Schools through its Opportunity Grants program, which seeks to expand learning options and opportunities for students. Cherokee's Toni Warren, Sequoyah's Elle Blatchford and Woodstock's Karson Martin were honorable mentions. Warren had a great 2022-23 season, taking the leap to the Warriors' lead threat on offense and committing to Wofford. She scored 41 points in Cherokee's 90-67 first-round playoff win over West Forsyth, breaking the single-game team record for points scored. Blatchford led Sequoyah to another Class AAAAAA state playoff appearance, pacing the offense at 17.7 points per game, along with 4.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists. She scored 25 points against Douglas County in the first round of the playoffs and followed with 17 points in a second-round win over North Forsyth. On the boys side, Etowah's Brandon Rechsteiner and Cherokee's Tayden Owens earned honorable mention nods. Rechsteiner, a Virginia Tech commit, led Etowah to the Class AAAAAA semifinals after hitting a late free-throw to beat St. Pius X and second-team all-metro honoree Spencer Elliott. He finished that game with 21 points and scored 15 points in a 56-53 semifinal loss to Alexander. Owens was a vital part of Cherokee's playoff run, which included the Warriors making the state championship game for the first time since 1982. He finished with 10 points and a go-ahead 3-pointer in a quarterfinal win over Carrollton. She posted back-to-back games with multiple hits, three RBIs and two doubles in each game against UCF and Toledo. She continues to build on a decorated career after starting all 51 games for Kennesaw State during the 2022 season, and setting the Owls' Division-I single-season records in home runs with 19 and total bases with 133. She was an ASUN All-Conference first team and an All-Academic honoree last season. At 7-2 through the first five weeks of the 2023 season, the Eagles have already matched last year's win total and are looking for more. Etowah is riding a five-game winning streak that began March 3 with a 14-1 blowout of Campbell. After finishing 7-11 last year, the Eagles look to build on their start as the schedule gets tougher. Etowah outscored its opponents 95-44 over the first nine games this season and 62-10 over the last five outings. It allowed just one goal each to Campbell, East Paulding and North Atlanta. The least amount of goals the Eagles gave up in a game in 2022 was four. On the offensive side, Etowah scored in double digits in six of nine games and is averaging 10.6 goals per game. It averaged 9.4 goals per game in 2022. Attackers Ryder Neuhoff and Jack Kosten have led the Eagles' offense this year, with Carter Presnell patrolling the midfield. Josh Faile is a big reason why Etowah is allowing just 4.9 goals per game alongside goalkeeper Gavin Jaegers. Coach Mike Cintineo said Faile shuts down the top opposing player each game. As successful as Etowah has been over the first five weeks, its schedule becomes much more difficult with more area games and four non-area games upcoming against opponents with records above .500. The Eagles have already beaten one area opponent in River Ridge but still have Dalton, Sequoyah, Woodstock and Creekview on its slate. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews - - - - - - The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. Cherokee County and four of its cities have received a federal grant for the creation of a transportation safety plan to improve pedestrian safety. Cherokee County, Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock and Ball Ground were awarded a $450,000 action plan grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All program on Feb. 1. The grant was part of $800 million in awards for 510 projects through the first round of funding for the program, which provides funding for regional and local jurisdictions to develop a transportation safety action plan aimed at improving road designs to better sidewalks and crosswalks to prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation's roadways. Day told the Tribune Friday that the public can expect to see the plan in 2024. The next steps are to complete grant award agreements and procure a consultant to complete the study. The study will likely begin later this year, he said. The plan will determine what projects and countermeasures are needed to improve the safety of the county's transportation system, Day said. With this plan and list of projects, the county and the cities can then set forth a strategy and timeline to complete the projects. Day added that the plan will likely make recommendations on intersection, signalization and pedestrian facilities improvements, among other possibilities. Former Etowah baseball star Drew Waters returned to Eagle Peak on Tuesday to see his No. 7 jersey retired by the program. The Kansas City Royals outfielder helped lead the Eagles to the 2017 Class AAAAAAA state championship, then was selected 41st overall by the Atlanta Braves in that summer's draft. Waters was named the Cherokee County Player of the Year as a senior in 2017. He hit .510 with 15 home runs and 41 RBIs before also earning the Gatorade Georgia Player of the Year. In the 2017 draft, Waters became the highest-drafted high school player in Cherokee County history. Waters stayed after the ceremony to sign autographs and chat with fans, while also taking in the preseason scrimmage against Marist. He spent time pre-game with the current players and worked out with the current generation of Eagles, one year after they were the Class AAAAAAA runners-up. After heading to Kansas City in a July trade last year, Waters made his major league debut Aug. 22 and went on to appear in 32 games, batting .240 with six doubles, five home runs and 18 RBIs. Local government leaders in Cherokee County and the cities of Holly Springs and Woodstock are working together to create an area plan for future development at the Interstate 575 and Sixes Road interchange, the county announced. The area in question consists of about 100 acres in the southeast quadrant of the interchange. The land is divided among the two cities and the county jurisdictions. All three governmental entities' comprehensive land use plans show the parcels as potential regional center and employment opportunities. To this end, county commissioners unanimously approved a 45-day moratorium Tuesday on the acceptance of any new applications related to rezoning, development or construction in the I-575 and Sixes Road Interchange area. Holly Springs City Council members are asking county officials to reject a company's application for a proposed storage facility at North Rope Mill Road in unincorporated Cherokee County near the city. The city council voted Monday to recommend to county commissioners that they deny a rezoning request for property in unincorporated Cherokee County within the Holly Springs growth boundary area. The property in question is at 624 North Rope Mill Road, near Sixes Road. The request from Robert Stone is to rezone 11.1 acres from single family residential to light industrial with concurrent variances for an outdoor storage facility for boats and recreational vehicles. The parcel lies within an area that Holly Springs, Woodstock and Cherokee County officials have identified as a potential jobs center, and Holly Springs and Cherokee County have passed moratoriums on new applications for the area. City staff will send a letter to the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners expressing the city council's concerns regarding the proposed rezoning, Holly Springs City Manager Rob Logan said Wednesday. The application is scheduled to be on the Cherokee County Planning Commission agenda in March. The city council also discussed an intergovernmental agreement with Cherokee County to conduct the city's election. The city council will vote on this agreement at the Feb. 23 meeting. Parents need to be aware of what's going on in their kids' lives online, in addition to offline, panelists at a Cherokee County School District forum said Tuesday. As part of its Parent University series, CCSD brought in professionals from the school district, a school police officer, a counselor and a prosecutor to discuss cyberbullying and social media's impact on local students. Panelists agreed that parents need to have conversations with their children about the internet and social media, and create a safe environment where children can come to them if there's a problem. A poll of attendees showed 76% of parents had not had a child disclose that they had been cyberbullied. Unlike previous generations who could leave their problems with peers when they went home from school, with social media, bullying follows today's students home, hurting their mental health. High school students are less confident than they were before social media, Creekview High School Principal Michael Santoro said. Ashley Snow, a Cherokee County deputy chief assistant district attorney for juvenile court, warned that the internet can give children access to content that's not appropriate for kids. Many young children, as young as 9, are exposed to child pornography, she said, and some try to act out or experiment with behavior that “breaks families apart.” It's also common for children to share information with strangers on the internet, not realizing the risks, Snow said. She recommended that parents restrict their children's access to the internet, video game devices and cell phones. If a child sends explicit content to another person, it “absolutely” should be reported, Dobbs said, even if it's to another minor. To report cyberbullying or another issue to school officials, parents and students can use CCSD's Vector Alert system, and can submit reports anonymously. The system isn't 24/7, Murdock said, but officials will respond quickly. People can also report to a teacher or counselor, or to a school administrator. Athletes from all six Cherokee County high schools celebrated the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day on January 30 at Woodstock High School. More than 500 female athletes participated as NGWSD recognized the contributions they made in their sports and celebrated their positive influence on the landscape. The day is celebrated in all 50 states, and Cherokee County has hosted its own event since 2005. Each year, the program chooses a coach to honor for their contributions and support of the area's female athletes. Woodstock athletic director Julie Crowe earned this year's award and was also acknowledged for her 20 years as the Wolverines' girls' basketball coach. Cherokee County's 18 female wrestlers were recognized with the Trailblazer award for their participation in a historically male-dominated sport. Each school had an Athlete of the Year recipient, along with an alumna and team of the year. Cherokee's Athlete of the Year was Lexi Pavese, Creekview's was Anslie Pettit and Astrid Medina was honored from Etowah. Mataya Gayle was River Ridge's honoree, Laurel Blase earned the award from Sequoyah and Hannah Obenauf was Woodstock's winner. Creekview also honored alumna Alivia Mynes, who was tragically lost in a car accident in 2022. Nine Cherokee County football players put pen to paper Wednesday, signing their national letters of intent to join collegiate football programs. Etowah led the way with three signees, followed by Creekview, River Ridge and Sequoyah with two. Etowah kicker Carson Allen made one of the biggest splashes, signing with a Southeastern Conference school in Mississippi State. He was a five-star kicker as rated by Kohl's Kicking, and he was the No. 42-ranked kicker in the class of 2023. Etowah also had two defensive backs sign Wednesday, with Frank Mosley going to West Virginia State and Jamir Maxime to Reinhardt. Sequoyah also had a pair of defensive backs sign in Cantrell Davis (Tuskegee) and Ridley Joseph (Concordia-St. Paul). Creekview, offensive/defensive lineman Anthony Caraballo inked his letter with Huntingdon, while fullback/defensive lineman Jacob Hefner signed as a preferred walk-on at Furman. Defensive lineman Ethan Anderson (Warner) and offensive lineman Reed Albers (Centre) were River Ridge's signees. Woodstock did not have any signees Wednesday, though it had two players sign with Division I programs during the early signing period in Adonis Garcia (Wofford) and Tyler Douthit (Samford). Cherokee is expected to have two players sign on a later date in Kyan Simmons and Ryane Martin. Canton Mayor Bill Grant is "excited" to address the Interstate 575 exit at Hickory Flat Highway into the city this year, he told attendees at a Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce event Thursday. Grant, Canton City Council members Brooke Schmidt, JoEllen Wilson and Shawn Tolan, and City Manager Billy Peppers shared updates about the city with local community and business leaders at the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce's Good Morning Cherokee meeting Thursday. Grant, the council members and Peppers shared a number of statistics and bullet points showcasing how Canton has grown and continues to grow with the guidance of the city's "Roadmap to Success." The eight tenets of the city's roadmap are: Creating Great Neighborhoods Celebrating the Diversity of Our Community Advancing Regional Economic Success Enhancing Historic Downtown Canton Sustaining Our Natural Environment Connecting Citizens to Parks and Recreation Improving Infrastructure for Future Demands Leading with Excellence In 2022, Canton saw its population grow to over 35,000 — about five times its 2000 population, which was 7,000, Peppers said. The number of city employees also grew to 134, and the city changed its starting base compensation for employees to $20 an hour. To address housing needs, last year in addition to approving private housing developments, Canton officials committed $2.8 million in a low interest loan for the Shipp Street housing redevelopment. The city also entered into an agreement with the Canton Housing Authority for $1 million in support for a 9% low-income housing tax credits application. Susan Treadaway has taken an administrative oath as Cherokee County's acting district attorney, after former District Attorney Shannon Wallace was sworn in as a Superior Court judge. Chief Superior Court Judge Ellen McElyea swore in Susan Treadaway as acting district attorney of the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit serving Cherokee County January 31, the district attorney's office announced. Katie Gropper was sworn in as chief assistant district attorney. Treadaway was previously the chief assistant district attorney. The design phase includes field surveys and survey database, environmental documentation including all required special studies, geotechnical, preliminary construction plans, as well as lighting and right-of-way plans (including revisions) for the improvements at I-575 at the Ridgewalk Parkway interchange, according to city documents. The change comes after Governor Brian Kemp swore in Wallace in Atlanta Jan. 30. Kemp appointed Wallace to the newly created fourth judicial seat on the Superior Court. Treadaway will hold the position of acting district attorney pending Governor Kemp's appointment of Wallace's successor. There was a three-way tie for the 2023 STAR Student for Cherokee County this year. Griffen Bon and Braden Flournoy from Cherokee High School, as well as Avi Stein from Etowah High School, were recognized last week at the annual STAR Student and Teacher Recognition Ceremony hosted at the Canton Theatre by the Canton Lions Club, which has been the local sponsor since the STAR program began in 1958. The winners were announced last Tuesday at a program sponsored by the Canton Lions Club at the Historic Canton Theater. They were selected from the eight STAR Students named for each of the seven high schools in Cherokee County. The Cherokee County School District recognizes its high school students with the highest SAT scores and their teachers through the Student Teacher Achievement Recognition program. The STAR Student honor is awarded to the high school senior from each Georgia public and private high school with the highest score on any single test date of the SAT and who also ranks in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of his or her class based on grade point average. Each honored student is invited to select his or her favorite teacher to be named that school's STAR Teacher. A south Georgia woman is charged with stealing three handguns from her boyfriend in Cherokee County after meeting him for the first time in person. Katrina Leanne Minkema of Douglas, was arrested Sunday and charged with one felony count of theft by taking, according to a warrant filed December 7 by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office. Authorities say Minkema allegedly stole a Ruger 9MM, a Smith and Wesson 22 caliber and a CZ P10 handgun, each with an extra magazine, from the property of a man she had an online relationship with. According to the warrant the total value of the stolen guns was between $1,500 and $5,000. The alleged incident took place between 5 a.m. and 1 p.m. October 15 in Woodstock, according to the warrant. According to the sheriff's office, Minkema met her boyfriend for the first time at his home when she visited him at about 5 a.m. October 15. The boyfriend told authorities that that morning, he left the home for work, and when he decided to come home for lunch, Minkema and his three handguns were missing. Minkema was released from the Cherokee County jail Monday on a $4,875 bond, according to Cherokee Sheriff's Office spokesperson Patty Pan. Recruiting for some of Cherokee County's top football players has picked up some steam over the past few weeks. Players from all six schools have seen recognition come their way, with Creekview's Andrew Rosinksi proving to be a valued commodity, and Cherokee's Kyan Simmons picking up his third offer. Rosinski, a 6-foot-6. 282-pound offensive lineman, has offers from Georgia Tech, Duke, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Liberty and Charlotte. He visited Duke and Vanderbilt last week and earned two Power Five offers this month alone. Georgia, Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern visited Creekview's campus Thursday. Simmons ' recruiting process started slow, but coming into the 2022 season fully healthy and one of few veterans on the Warriors' defense, he led the team with 103 tackles, 11 sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Simmons has offers from Football Championship Subdivision program Marist and Division II Shorter, as well as Westminster College, a Division III program in Pennsylvania. Sequoyah's Jackson Hancock was offered by Georgia Southern on Thursday and has visited Georgia State. Woodstock's Evan McKeller received his first offer Wednesday from Division III Anna Maria College in Masschusetts. The senior linebacker was third on the Wolverines' tackle chart this season with 67, including four for loss and one sack. Etowah defensive back Frank Mosley committed to Division II West Virginia State on January 21 after finishing fourth on the Eagles' defense with 60 tackles this year. Etowah offensive lineman Tate Nelms is set to visit South Florida this weekend, while fellow lineman Andrew McNair was invited to the Georgia vs. Florida High School Showcase on January 19. Canton resident Frank Capuozzi, the oldest member of the Cherokee County Senior Services Center, celebrated his milestone of a fulfilling 100 years of life at a celebration held on January 27. A large birthday card was made and signed by multiple members of the community. Party attendees enjoyed slices of a cake provided by his daughter, Antoinette Kelly. The celebration began officially at 11:30 a.m. at the center in Canton. From his left pocket, Capuozzi pulled out a gold pocket-watch to show guests around the table. The watch was a gift from one of the party attendees who Capuozzi regularly asked for the time from. He laughed heartily as he showed the engraved cover that reads “100 Years.” He was described as “lively” and “down-to-earth” by those passing his table at his party. Capuozzi is now mostly deaf due to his time serving in World War II as a gunner. He served on three fronts in France, Germany and Belgium, including the Battle of the Bulge. He recounted his time in France with a night he spent at Sacré-Cœur, a basilica in Paris, lighting candles for prayers that he would live to see his 40th year. At 100 years old, he says he wouldn't change a single decision he's made. He's the proud father of three children, a grandfather of three and a great-grandfather to two. Capuozzi spent close to four decades working as a hairdresser before his retirement at 60 years old. He also worked with CBS and NBC studios during that time. He moved to Canton to live with his daughter after the death of his third wife, Leanore Cappuozzi, two years prior. He spent his childhood growing up in Naples, Italy, where he was born. He is the oldest child in his family and had two sisters, Maria Ricciardi and Rita Fitzsimmons, who were twins. Fitzsimmons died at 94 years old but Ricciardi is now 95 years old. An officer with the Woodstock Police Department was recognized this week for helping a driver who was stranded on the road after running out of gas. Seeing the driver in need, Officer B. Keane used his patrol car and then his own body strength to help push the pedestrian's car, the department shared on its Facebook page. The daughter of the driver made a Facebook post thanking the officer and tagging the Woodstock Police Department. The daughter said she brought gas to her mother, but it wasn't enough to get the car started. Officer Keane pushed the vehicle with his patrol car, and then when the car would not make it all the way, he got out and pushed it the rest of the way himself. The Woodstock Police Department was made aware of officer Keane's good deed via this Facebook post. “We were tagged in the post below and just had to share!,” the Facebook post by the Woodstock PD reads. “Thank you, Officer B. Keane, for going above and beyond! We think he's pretty amazing too!” The city of Woodstock and the Georgia Department of Transportation are working together to help alleviate congestion at the intersection of Interstate 575 and Ridgewalk Parkway. The Woodstock City Council approved a cost proposal this week from Arcadis for the design services of a project the city is calling the “I-575 — Ridgewalk Parkway Diverging Diamond Interchange.” A diverging diamond interchange allows non-highway lanes to cross to the opposite side of the highway at each interchange. By doing this, two-way left-turn traffic is allowed on the highway without the need for traffic signals. The cost proposal shows a maximum allowable cost of $934,407.90 for the task order with Arcadis, according to city documents. If the scope of services changes, there will be additional costs. The design phase includes field surveys and survey database, environmental documentation including all required special studies, geotechnical, preliminary construction plans, as well as lighting and right-of-way plans (including revisions) for the improvements at I-575 at the Ridgewalk Parkway interchange, according to city documents. The work will be completed in accordance with GDOT Plan Development Process and GDOT Environmental Procedures Manual, GDOT Plan Presentation Guide, design policies and manuals and current software versions approved by the department's project manager. Plans will be approved by GDOT and the Federal Highway Administration due to I-575 being a federal interstate, said Stacy Brown, marketing and communications manager for the city of Woodstock. The city of Norcross recently announced that its NorcrossWorks web site has been relaunched. According to the city, NorcrossWorks is a user-friendly website whereby employers can post and advertise openings at no cost. All a business has to do is complete a simple form which will be reviewed and posted by the Economic Development Department. Likewise, job seekers can access job postings and apply. "This platform aims to address some of the city's labor, income and educational gaps, which have all been exacerbated by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapidly changing nature of the global economy," a statement from the city said. "The goal is to serve both businesses (employers) and individuals in the labor market (job seekers) by connecting both parties together." Norcross Mayor Craig Newton said the relaunch is particularly timely due to current economic conditions. To learn more about the site, go to norcrossworks.com. And now here's your Gwinnett County sports update presented by Tom Wages funeral home. Grayson head football coach Adam Carter has resigned to become head football coach at Lowndes, Lowndes County Schools announced Tuesday morning. Carter has been the Rams' head coach the last four years with a 45-9 record highlighted by going 14-0 and winning the Class AAAAAAA state championship in the pandemic-affected 2020 season. Grayson also made the 2021 semifinals and the quarterfinals in 2019 and 2022. Prior to being hired at Grayson, Carter went 12-1 in one season as Creekview's head coach. He was previously an assistant at Camden County, Paulding County, Marietta, Reinhardt and South Carolina State, as well as head coach at Bradwell Institute in 2013. How strong is the upcoming partnership between Lawrenceville and the Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity group? Strong enough for the city to pledge 15-person weekend shifts by city employees to help on two of the builds for the nonprofit. That's the unique part of the agreement, which the city announced at its Dec. 14 council meeting. The City Council approved a project to build four houses in the upcoming year in the Lawrenceville city limits, located in the Saddle Shoals neighborhood off Springlake Road. The project will begin in the first quarter of 2023. Part of Habitat for Humanity's business model is for future owners and community leaders to work side-by-side to make their dreams of homeownership a reality. But what makes this project unique is the fact that other city employees from Lawrenceville will help with the builds. According to city officials, Lawrenceville will provide $100,000 to the project using ARPA funding for construction. Gwinnett/Walton Habitat for Humanity will sell the homes to individuals meeting the income requirements of the Habitat program. City officials said the homes will contain at least 1,500 square feet of heated space, a two-car garage and a working fireplace and chimney. A group of Georgians is suing the state over its failure to provide health benefits for transgender people through the State Health Benefit Plan, which provides health coverage for state employees, including public school employees. Two of the plaintiffs in the case work for the state, while one is the son of a state employee covered by the State Health Benefit Plan. The lawsuit maintains the failure to provide the medical services, including gender-confirming surgery, amounts to discrimination based on sex. The Campaign for Southern Equality, an LGBTQ advocacy group with members in Georgia, is also a plaintiff in the lawsuit. Medicare and many other private insurance companies already cover the treatments. Recent lawsuits have successfully pushed other health plans in Georgia to provide gender-confirming treatment, including surgery. A lawsuit forced the University System of Georgia to cover the medical care in 2018. Earlier this year, a federal district judge ruled employers cannot deny or exclude coverage for gender-confirming care for transgender people after a Houston County policy denied coverage for a county employee who wanted the surgery. In July, the state Medicaid program changed its policy to cover transgender health-care, including gender-confirmation surgery, as part of a settlement in a separate lawsuit. The state Public Service Commission (PSC) approved a $1.8 billion rate increase requested by Georgia Power Tuesday that embraced most of an agreement between the agency's staff and the company presented last week. Commissioners slightly lowered the upper limit on profits Georgia Power will be allowed to keep and sweetened incentives to be offered to encourage the development of solar energy and the deployment of electric vehicle charging stations. But the PSC stopped short of more far-reaching changes proposed by Commissioner Lauren “Bubba” McDonald, who provided the lone opposition in Tuesday's 4-1 vote. The $1.8 billion rate hike – down from Georgia Power's original request of $2.9 billion – will raise the average residential customer's bill by $3.60 per month starting Jan. 1. That's down significantly from the $14.90 monthly increase customers would have seen next year under the original front-loaded three-year request the company proposed in June. Instead, customer rates will go up by 4.5% in 2024 and again in 2025 under the agreement between Georgia Power and the PSC's Public Interest Advocacy Staff. The commission set the return on equity (ROE) for the utility at the staff-recommended level of 10.5%, down from the 11% the company sought. But commission Chair Tricia Pridemore amended the upper limit of the “earnings band” – the range within which the utility can earn profits for its shareholders without sharing them with customers – to 11.9%, slightly below the 12% Georgia Power requested and currently receives. The PSC staff had recommended reducing the upper limit to 11.5%. Chris Womack, Georgia Power's chairman, president, and CEO, said in September the company expects to file a request in February for unrecovered fuel costs to account for the volatility of the energy market resulting from factors including rising natural gas prices and the impacts of the war in Ukraine. The utility also will be looking to the PSC to recover the costs of bringing into service the two new nuclear reactors being built at Plant Vogtle. Since starting the season 1-7, the Woodstock girls basketball team has turned the tide to go 6-4 after opening the new year with a win over county rival Creekview. Three of the Wolverines' wins since December came against Region 6AAAAAA opponents. It has Woodstock well-positioned for a late-season surge, and with seniors Karson Martin and Casey Miller returning to the floor, coach Regina Tate-Leslie is confident the pace is sustainable. After Woodstock fell to Pope in its first game of December, Martin and Miller helped lead the Wolverines to three straight victories over Rome, Etowah and Lambert by a combined 30 points. During those three games, Martin averaged 15.7 points per game, while Miller tallied 17.7. Martin neared a triple-double in the 52-32 win over Lambert with 15 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, while Miller finished with a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Woodstock has plenty of help for its two leading producers in Annika Gay and Katherine Blackwell. Through 13 games, Blackwell has provided a scoring lift at 8.9 points per game and a team-best 33 3-pointers made. Gay averaged 3.3 points through 13 games and was a valuable presence inside with 7.5 rebounds per game, with 2.7 on the offensive end. After the graduation of Cherokee County Player of the Year Bridget Utberg, who averaged 20.2 points per game last season, Woodstock has five freshmen and three sophomores, with all seeing the floor and many playing vital roles. The Wolverines are on the upswing at the perfect time. Following Wednesday's win over Creekview, they moved into second place in the region behind only River Ridge. Matthew Holtkamp has only a couple of weeks left to enjoy a pre-elected office life, but there was some official business he had to take care of on Friday night for his soon-to-be new position. He had to be sworn in. New commissioners typically hold their swearing in ceremonies sometime in the December before their term officially begins. This time it was Holtkamp's turn, after he defeated outgoing Commissioner Marlene Fosque in last month's general election, and the ceremony was held at the Gwinnett County Historic Courthouse. And, in true Gwinnett County commissioner fashion, Holtkamp evoked the often-mentioned “Gwinnett Standard” county mantra as he addressed supporters at the swearing-in ceremony. Holtkamp will be the only Republican on the five-member county commission when he takes office in January. In his post-swearing-in remarks, he thanked the Gwinnett Republican Party executive board for supporting his campaign. But, Holtkamp did get support from across the political aisle at his swearing-in ceremony. Two Democrats who will soon be Holtkamp's colleagues on the county commission, Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson and Commissioner Kirkland Carden, attended the ceremony. Hendrickson and Holtkamp are both members of the Rotary Club of Gwinnett. As Holtkamp addressed attendees at the ceremony, he recalled moving to Gwinnett from Ohio in the 1980's and having to learn how things worked in Georgia, and also some of he local vernacular. A roller coaster of a first half and Georgia's highest scoring state championship football game ever left the Mill Creek High School players both exhausted and jubilant Saturday. They had just made history in multiple ways on a foggy night with misting rain at Georgia State's Center Parc Stadium. The Hawks won the first state football title in school history with a 70-35 rout of previously unbeaten Carrollton, giving Gwinnett its third straight state champion in Class AAAAAAA. Their 70 points broke the state record for most points scored by one team in a state final according to Georgia High School Football Daily records, besting the old mark of 62 set by Valdosta in 1971 and Warner Robins in 2020. Mill Creek finished 14-1, pushing past the school record for wins in a season by a game. It wrapped up a completely dominant postseason with another convincing victory, putting an exclamation point on a run that featured the Hawks dealing out the mercy rule of a running clock to their first four playoff opponents. The showdown of nationally ranked teams — Mill Creek is Number 18 by MaxPreps and Carrollton is Number 20, while Carrollton is Number 20 and Mill Creek is Number 24 by USA Today — featured a first half of each team landing shots with the big play. Two of the Hawks' early scoring plays were on special teams that had them up 28-14 after the first quarter. Carrollton which hadn't allowed more than 28 points in a game all season, never got the deficit to single digits after the first quarter despite 529 yards and five touchdowns from freshman quarterback Julian Lewis. The Hawks hit the 70-point mark with a nine-play, six-minute scoring drive, set up by Jamal Anderson's fourth-down sack. Kevin Mitchell's 48-yard TD run with 1:36 left in the fourth quarter capped the scoring and made Mill Creek the eighth Gwinnett school to win a state football title in Georgia's largest class, joining Brookwood, Collins Hill, Grayson, Norcross, North Gwinnett, Parkview and Peachtree Ridge. Gwinnett high school football continued its impressive run with Mill Creek's championship. At least one Gwinnett team has won a state football title in 15 of the past 17 seasons. A Navy veteran who went on to work for the Veterans Administration and participated in several community groups has received a recognition from the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Philadelphia Winn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution recently presented a DAR America 250 Commendation to Terry Edward Pyatt Manning. Manning was recognized for roles he filled in the the armed forces and Veterans Administration as well as roles he filled in the community. He served in the Navy from 1967 until 1970 and left the military as a petty officer first class. He later went on to work for the Veterans Administration, where he eventually became the auditor-in-charge. But, he was also president of the Friends of the National Archives Southeast Region, is a member of the Gwinnett Historical Society, co-founded the Gwinnett County Genealogy Study Group and gives lectures on early American history, which he does while wearing colonial attire. Manning, who is married to Philadelphia Winn chapter member Virginia Manning, is also involved with groups that work with the DAR. He is a member of the Button Gwinnett Sons of the American Revolution, the Atlanta Sons of the American Revolution, the Georgia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution and is the Senior President of the Allen Howard Society of the Children of the American Revolution. Northside Hospital will be building more of the new tower at its Gwinnett campus right away than previously announced, in a move that will make the Lawrenceville site the largest campus in the Northside Hospital system in 2025. Officials from Northside said the Georgia Department of Community Health gave them the green light on Wednesday to add seven more stories onto the construction that is gearing up for the new inpatient tower that is being built at the Gwinnett campus. That will put the tower at 17 stories, which is the height it was always intended to eventually be, all in one go at construction rather than in phases as was previously planned. It will add 146 patient beds at the hospital, and put Northside Gwinnett at a total of 696 beds. The tower, when completed, is expected to compete for the title of being the tallest building in Gwinnett County, at a height of 257 feet and six inches. Its closest competitor for the title, local officials had said in the past, would be the Sonesta Gwinnett Place Atlanta hotel, which has at least 15 floors. Getting the permission to build additional seven floors means the tower will not be built in stages, as had been the plan at one time. With state authorization granted, Northside officials now only need the blessing of the Federal Aviation Administration — since the hospital is near Briscoe Field and the tower will be more than 200 feet tall — to proceed. The hospital system has already filed paperwork to get the FAA's blessing, and is expecting an answer soon. When former Gwinnett County Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash was a young girl growing up in the Harbins area, farming was still king. She recalls a time when eastern Gwinnett was truly rural — even though it's less developed that other parts of Gwinnett today, Nash is quick to point that she does not believe it's really rural anymore. When she thinks of the area being rural, she thinks of the farmland that used to be widespread in eastern Gwinnett. In fact, she remembers there being more farmland than forests in the Dacula area back in the day. Nash was one of several dignitaries, including Governor Brian Kemp and current Gwinnett Commission Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson, who attended Rowen's groundbreaking ceremony, which was held on a field on Drowning Creek Road on Friday. The 2,000-acre research-oriented “knowledge community” mixed-use development, located between Dacula and the Gwinnett-Barrow county line, has been in the planning stages since it was first announced in 2020, in Nash's final year in office. It is expected to take decades to build out, but it is projected to create at least 100,000 new jobs in eastern Gwinnett, according to Rowen Foundation President Mason Ailstock. The agricultural innovation aspect of Rowen in particular will likely have a major impact across the state since, according to the Georgia Department of Economic Development, agribusiness is the state's largest industry. Buford's wrestling team won the 18-team Aaron Kirkland Invitational on Saturday. The tournament honors former Buford wrestler Kirkland, who died in an October 2021 car accident. The Wolves finished ahead of runner-up Rockmart, third-place Mount Pisgah, fourth-place Creekview and fifth-place Etowah. Buford's D.J. Clarke, Rylan Ibold, Kieron McCormack, Drew Gorman, Gavin Pope and Aaron Riner won weight class titles. #GwinnettDailyPost #Georgia #LocalNews -- - - The Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast is local news for Lawrenceville, Norcross, Duluth, and all of Gwinnett County.
