It isn't easy to be an entrepreneur. You have to be in the industry and find out what would make a change in the industry and how you can give a solution for the problems that people have. In this episode of Establishing Your Empire, we have a fascinating conversation with Tyler and John Richards, Entrepreneurs and Angel investors. If you are interested in finding out how to become the entrepreneur you have always dreamt of, this episode is just for you. Starting the conversation, Tyler dives into how he got into being an entrepreneur, how his family background helped him to establish the environment to be an entrepreneur, and what kind of ideas he had getting started. Tyler shares how he identified the need for programmers for every company in Utah and started coding classes in a co-working space. Getting into a startup by sacrificing the current job with a salary is terrifying. Oh, the stories I could tell of pitched battles over idea validation. I've seen the debate swing like a pendulum between test and trust through the years. In the pre-digital days - back when dinosaurs and mad men roamed the savannah - creatives like myself battled researchers over the validity of focus groups and mall intercepts. Usually, we'd be given leeway to trust our intuition on ideas... until a concept bombed. Then, like Dad busting up the keg party, researchers would be brought in to restore a bit of sober adult thinking to the proceedings. Fast forward to the birth of the internet. In the raucous pre-bubble days, we witnessed the rise of dot coms with more investment money than sense. Insane advertising (remember the E*Trade monkey?) made us laugh, but not buy. As the pendulum inevitably swings, so too did the forces of testing. Which brings us to today, where data gathering and testing rule the roost. Kevin Indig caught my eye with a recent Linkedin post, where he took the position that far too much faith was being placed in testing. This coming from a person responsible for all things SEO at G2 (and previously at Atlassian).  I knew we had to talk. I started with a free 5-Day Website Challenge that teaches how to build a WordPress site from scratch to grow an email list. Then I built a course called WP*OMG – Operation Marketing Genius which teaches how to build an online course or membership site and how to create all the marketing sequences to automate getting people into the course. Sounds like a logical next step, right? WRONG. I miscalculated. It launched to crickets. People need more help after they build their first site. There was too big of a gap between where my people are RIGHT NOW vs. where they will be when they need to create an online course or membership site or sell something. They need to hone their services, develop their brand, and grow their list. They weren’t ready for OMG – even though they said they wanted it. I went too far past where they were. So if you want to make sure that you don’t make the same mistake, I highly recommend that you pick up a copy of Pat Flynn’s book, Will It Fly. Today, he shares the main problems with “Chat” functionality and why people are frustrated with the tools they use today. He is exploring possible solutions for Level to replace Slack and other tools. What issues do you experience? Today’s talk is with Bryan Landers: an athlete who gave up skiing in order to protect his hands for banjo playing. Bryan talks about his inspirations Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Page, and Bela Fleck; picking out an instrument for the first time; and how you get to ski every day at boarding school in New Hampshire. As an artist who utilizes multiple media, learn about how his not-well-received art portfolio pushed him a little closer to music; and how he ultimately leveraged one talent to support another. Well also talk a bit about the importance of getting in on things from the ground up (or not getting in on new ventures like Pinterest).
