We explore the forgotten pioneers, iconic eponymous skills, the dominance of Jury Chechi on rings, the 2019 breakthrough World medal, the unforgettable Paris Olympics, and whether Italy has what it takes to defeat Team USA during the Los Angeles quad. Along the way we revisit Vanessa Ferrari's controversial Olympic floor finals, the MTV series that made Italian gymnasts celebrities, and the innovations that changed the Code of Points forever. "All women have a garden, and a garden needs a big hose to water it... or a small hose... as long as it works." We watched "Now and Then" with a friend of the pod, Michael Valvo, and we'd like to speak to the spirit of Dear Johnny. This movie will forever be iconic and not just as the girl version of "Stand By Me." The comparisons are inevitable, but reductive - especially once you've actually watched the movie, Tamar. The legacy and cultural impact of "Now and Then" are undeniable and thanks in no small part to the cast - millennials grew up with Christina Ricci, Gaby Hoffmann, Thora Birch, and Ashleigh Aston Moore (and Devon Sawa). These girls are best friend goals, and their summer together in 1970 is an adventure we're all still chasing. If we lived in the Gaslight Addition, we'd spend our entire summer bothering Wiladene, the waitress (Janeane Garofalo) at the diner, and her fortune-telling night job. Few bands burned brighter—or more colorfully—than Culture Club, and director Alison Ellwood joins Mike to unpack the making of her acclaimed documentary Boy George & Culture Club. From the group's improbable formation and meteoric rise to the personal relationships, creative tensions, and heartbreak that shaped their music, Ellwood reveals how she crafted an intimate portrait using the voices of Boy George, Jon Moss, Mikey Craig, and Roy Hay.The conversation explores the joy and challenge of building music documentaries, why some stories are best told by the artists themselves, and how editing ultimately discovers a film's true shape. Ellwood also discusses Culture Club's unforgettable MTV presence, Boy George's groundbreaking public persona, the band's deep catalog beyond the hits, and the electric response to the documentary's Tribeca premiere. It's a lively look at the magic of collaboration, the power of pop music, and the enduring legacy of one of the 1980s' most iconic bands.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring trumpet educator, improviser and composer Kris Tiner, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Kris Tiner Trumpet Interview" And, find the expanded show notes, transcript and more photos here --- How do you turn improvisation into an album, without taking forever to finish? How do you know when it's ready and complete? Kris Tiner has been improvising his whole life, in fact, he would point out that we all are: "We're all improvising right now. You get up and walk to the door, and which room do you go into next? That's an improvisation. What are you going to have for dinner? You get in your car and you drive down the highway, that's an improvisation." Improvisation is a natural state of being for musicians, just witness when kids pick up an instrument and start exploring. But as adults (and professional recording musicians), well, time is money, the album's gotta get released, and you've got to decide when to stamp that recording and send it out into the zeitgeist. Kris shares some of the fascinating mindset of recording improvisational jazz pieces, as reflected on his brand new album, "Sung," a collaboration with pianist Cathlene Pineda. We also talk about the experience of providing music education in a small city, not a big urban hub, and the connections and community that can be found therein. Kris teaches trumpet, jazz, composition and improvisation as Professor of Music at Bakersfield College in California, helping students gain access to music and opportunities that they may not receive otherwise. Of whom one of those students was himself, having embarked on his musical education at CSU Bakersfield in the 1990s. A full circle journey, indeed. About Kris Tiner: KRIS TINER is a California-based trumpet artist, composer, and educator. His music has been performed on five continents, his 100+ recordings have been enthusiastically reviewed in the international jazz press, and he has performance credits on MTV, NBC, PBS and Comedy Central. Tiner has received awards from ASCAP, the American Composers Forum, Chamber Music America, Montalvo Arts Center, and in 2023 was recognized as the CMEA statewide jazz educator of the year. He is a member of the Empty Cage Quartet with recordings on Portugal's Clean Feed label, and he collaborates with guitarist Mike Baggetta in the duo Tin/Bag. Tiner also performs with the Cathlene Pineda Quartet, Psychic Temple, the Industrial Jazz Group, and the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. He is the Director of Jazz Studies at Bakersfield College, and has also taught at CalArts and CSU Bakersfield. Tiner is the founder of Epigraph Records, an independent label dedicated to new creative music recorded in Bakersfield. In this episode, we're joined by Nigel Dick, the acclaimed music video director behind some of the most recognisable videos of the MTV era, including work with Guns N' Roses, Tears for Fears, Oasis, Britney Spears, Cher, and of course The Corrs.Nigel shares the journey that took him from training as an architect and busking on the Paris Metro to working at Stiff Records before eventually becoming one of the most successful music video directors of his generation. We hear how a chance recommendation from Andy Murray introduced him to Forgiven, Not Forgotten, an album he instantly fell in love with, eventually leading to a phone call that would see him direct four videos for The Corrs. This episode's interview is focused on his work for the band on the music videos Only When I Sleep and What Can I Do. Nigel takes us behind the scenes of filming Only When I Sleep at Los Angeles' historic Alexandria Hotel, revealing how the shoot came together on a modest budget and why he felt the videos from the first album hadn't yet captured who The Corrs truly were.Nigel also discusses the story behind directing What Can I Do, from writing a treatment overnight in a New York hotel room to flying across the world to New Zealand for a one-day shoot squeezed into the band's hectic touring schedule. Hear Nigel reflect on the realities of filmmaking in the pre-digital era, shooting on film, the art of music video production, and why The Corrs remain one of the most enjoyable bands he ever worked with! The location of the hotel used for the 'Only When I Sleep' music video can be found via the following link HEREThe location of the church and surrounding areas used in the 'What Can I Do' music video can be found via the following link HERESee images from the set of the 'Only When I Sleep' music video at the following link HERESee images of the chair and bed used in the 'Only When I Sleep' music video as seen on location in 2025 before they were reupholstered HEREA link to Nigel's book 'Music Video Mischief' can be found via Amazon at the following link HERENigel's website can be found at www.nigeldick.comSpecial thanks to Russell Swanson for a copy of the 'What Can I Do' workbook. Jake Luhrs of August Burns Red comes on to talk advice from last words, finding purpose and their new album!
We have a very special episode this week as we were joined by the former host of MTV's TRL, current writer/producer/voice actor for Family Guy, and LA-area DJ, Damien Fahey! Damien has been a DMB fan for nearly 30 years, and was able to catch last week's show at the iconic Forest Hills Stadium. We had a ton of fun chopping it up with him about how he became a fan of the band, his adoration for Carter, his most memorable time from hosting TRL, and of course how he wants to get Dave on Family Guy one day. Thanks again to Damien for joining us, and we hope you all enjoy this one as much as we did! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Our exit today has us saving the world and saving our Christmas presents. This week, we are looking at a pair of threequels to successful franchises. First, we are going to talk about Austin Powers In Goldmember, written by Mike Myers and Michael McCullers and directed by Jay Roach. Next, we will talk about Friday After Next, written by Ice Cube and directed by Marcus Raboy. Both films have so far been the last films in their respective franchises, despite them being fairly commercially successful.Along the way, we talk about how these films fit into their series, what makes a good threequel, and whether or not we will get a fourquel to either. Plus, the MTV movie awards, Christmas threequels, 80s horror, Mike Myers, Beyonce, ensembles, stale jokes, and lots of potty humor!Theme music by Jonworthymusic.Powered by RiversideFM.CFF Films with Ross and friends.Movies We've Covered on the Show on Letterboxd.Movies Recommended on the Show on Letterboxd.

On the 77th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, guitarist and founder of the band Restrayned, Tony Musallam, review the 1989 hair metal classic by Motley Crue "Dr. Feelgood." By the end of the 1980's Motley Crue was near the mountain top of hair metal bands. Dr. Feelgood cemented their reign with Nikki Sixx's lyrics, Mick Mars' guitar riffs, good looking platinum blond Vince Neil as the frontman and the heavy drums of the crazy Tommy Lee. The album contained 5 hit singles and videos that were on MTV non-stop, include the title track, Kickstart My Heart, Without You, Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.) and Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away). Dr. Feelgood was their 5th studio album was produced by the great Bob Rock. It made it to #1 on the US Billboard charts and eventually went 6 times platinum. The album signaled the end of a decade, hair metal and Motley Crue for a time. This was the Zeus' pick. So be wary of the terror in Tinseltown or it would leave you out of breath like someone we know! In an era where radio and MTV was still relevant and Bandcamp and Spotify were right around the corner, Guster's Keep It Together proved the group had much more to say beyond their typical 2 guitarists and a percussionist gimmick. From banjos to flugelhorns to the "frightening double-necked string instrument" played by none other than Ben Kweller this album truly runs the gamut from folk to psychedelic rock. For a band that talked a lot about getting "their break" on the radio, Keep It Together proved their music had something much more profound to say than the dime a dozen pop singles of the era. Treating schizophrenia in America is often described as a broken system, not because of a lack of medical knowledge, but due to structural and policy failures. The failures of these systems has created a cycle where individuals often move between homelessness, emergency rooms, and the criminal justice system rather than receiving ongoing care. Many families and caregivers struggle to get help even when the situation turns dangerous. In this episode, hosts Rachel Star Withers and Gabe Howard discuss how the government and health care system failures lead to these tragedies and what needs to change. They unpack cases like the one involving Rob Reiner, where his son, who has schizophrenia, is suspected of murdering both his parents during a severe mental health crisis. Guest Gail Freedman joins later in the episode. She is the director, writer, and producer of a new documentary, “No One Cares About Crazy People.” It's inspired by Ron Powers acclaimed book of the same name and it's an intimate, immersive dive into the crisis and chaos of severe mental illness and the grassroots movement to do something about it. Guest Information: With over 25 years as an award-winning filmmaker, Gail Freedman has produced, directed, and written dozens of documentaries on a wide range of subjects. Among her films: “Hot to Trot,” an award-winning feature documentary inside the fascinating but little-known world of same-sex competitive ballroom dance; “Making the 9/11 Memorial,” a primetime special for The History Channel; “Breaking the Silence Barrier” (cognitive disabilities); “Where's The Cure?” (breast cancer activism); “Generation Rx” (the opioid crisis); “Lessons for the Future” (public education); “Giving While Living” (philanthropy); and “A Forever Family” (Annie E. Casey Foundation). “No One Cares About Crazy People”Inspired by Ron Powers' acclaimed book of the same name, “No One Cares About Crazy People” is an intimate deep dive into the crisis and chaos of severe mental illness in America. A heartbreaking family memoir and searing social history, it is personal and immersive — but also tracks a burgeoning grassroots movement to reinvent our failed systems. Narrated by actor Bob Odenkirk (“Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul”) with original music by Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy. John & Aaron react to Jackass: The Movie for the first time as they check out the 2002 MTV classic that turned pranks, pain, stunts, and absolute stupidity into a full-blown theatrical experience! This Jackass The Movie reaction follows Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam Margera, Wee Man, Chris Pontius, Ryan Dunn, Dave England, and the whole Jackass crew as they take the TV show's chaos to the big screen with giant shopping carts, rental car destruction, golf course air horns, alligator stunts, rocket skates, and some of the grossest comedy John & Aaron have reacted to yet. In this Jackass 2002 reaction and Jackass movie review, John & Aaron break down the wild mix of classic MTV nostalgia, funniest movie reactions, hidden camera pranks, brutal physical comedy, and cringe-inducing stunts that made this franchise so legendary. From the rent-a-car destruction and “old man” shoplifting to the butt X-ray, wasabi snooters, paper cuts, Butterbean boxing match, whale shark stunt, party boy chaos in Japan, and the Son of Jackass ending, this Jackass retrospective breakdown asks the real question: how did these guys survive this movie — and why is it somehow kind of brilliant? Duran Duran's eponymous debut not only established their sound with funky bass and new wave synths but coincided with the launch of new US cable station, MTV. With their danceable beats, the boys stylish brand of new wave was perfect fot the 80s and perfect for MTV. It introduced a whole new generation of American music fans into Anglophiles including your hosts The Wolf & Action Jackson. We, like all of the MTV Generation, were not only grooving to John Taylor's funky bass but were fascinated by their fashion, haircuts and models that always seemed to find them. In the UK, they got on the charts and even went Top 10 in Australia with Planet Earth in the spring of 1981. But it was MTV that launched them to superstardom in the US. Simon LeBon's vocals complemented the textures coming from Nick Rhodes synths and Andy Taylor's guitar but his presence in the videos gave them a wider audience. The videos shot in Antigua for the Rio album are MTV greats but the macabre Night Boat was also filmed there and is creepier than Anyone Out There or Careless Memories. The Girls On Film video was censored in parts of the US and a racier edition could be found on Showtime, much to the delight of two young suburbanites. To give the US market more material in 1983 ahead of the Seven and the Ragged Tiger album which would come out in the fall, the debut was rereleased with a slightly different order and the new single Is There Something I Should Know? It went to #1 in the UK and went into heavy rotation on MTV, helping to drive the album platinum. We recall the first time seeing them on MTV, review the entire 1983 US version (with plenty of time for all the songs surrounding the debut) and rediscover some old faves. This week, half of us are at the beach enjoying some r n' r, so we thought we'd listen to some r n' r with a beachy vibe. We are pulling the plug… and gasping for air… guitars! Rock artists have been playing acoustic since the very beginning. In fact, most songwriters start the process with an acoustic instrument. There's something about capturing the sound of a song on just wire and wood that has a vulnerable, human feel to it. Dig your toes into the sand, breathe in the salt air, and enjoy these tunes with a frosty beverage. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Mtv started a series in 1989 called “Unplugged”, and almost every mainstream relevant act started producing acoustic albums or versions of their songs. This week we listen to some artist that you may have never considered as having acoustic interpretations of their songs. Songs this week include: Moon Tooth – “Trust” from Violent Grief: Acoustic Selections (2020) Hawkwind – “PSI Power” from Acoustic Daze (2019) Tora Tora – “Son Of A Prodigal Son” from Unplugged EP (2020) Michael Kiske – “You Always Walk Alone” from Past In Different Ways (2008) MIRADOR – “Fortune's Fate (Reborn At Badon Hill)” from The Gathering At Badon Hill (2026) Junkyard – “Til The Wheels Fall Off (Acoustic Version)” from Rome Is Burning (2020) Bloody Hammers – “Graveyard Waits” from The Acoustic Halloween Special (2025) Testament – “The Legacy (Live)” from Live At The Fillmore (1995) Mercy Beat – “Another Day” from Walk With Me (1999) Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts! Episode 786: From sci-fi parodies and comedy catchphrases to political satire and celebrity rap records, the '80s produced some truly unforgettable novelty hits. Steve and Chuck revisit songs that were silly, bizarre, occasionally controversial—and somehow impossible to forget. In this episode, they discuss: • "Star Trekkin'" by The Firm, the cult classic that became a No. 1 hit in the United Kingdom • "You Look Marvelous" by Billy Crystal, inspired by his legendary Saturday Night Live character Fernando • "Rappin' Rodney" by Rodney Dangerfield, one of the most unlikely rap records of the MTV era • "Bomb Iran" by Vince Vance & the Valiants, the political parody song inspired by the Iran hostage crisis Along the way, they explore the role of Dr. Demento, the rise of novelty records in the MTV era, memorable music videos, comedy albums, and why some of the weirdest songs of the decade continue to live rent-free in our heads decades later. Plus, Steve and Chuck share their memories of discovering these songs, discuss how novelty music fit into the larger pop culture landscape of the 1980s, and debate whether today's music world could ever produce anything quite like them again. This episode is brought to you by our friends at The 80s Cruise. Join your favorite artists, fellow fans, and the Stuck in the '80s crew aboard the ultimate floating celebration of the decade. "Music videos were an avenue for women to break into directing, which was really important at the time. A lot of women basically got their start directing music videos because nobody wanted to do them... until they became super popular." — Susan Lambert HatemThe great mid-season packing and moving marathon continues!
