This week, Shat The Movies kicks off our annual Spooktacular with a bloody, bong-ripped bang as we revisit 1999's Idle Hands — the stoner-horror-comedy hybrid where Devon Sawa's right hand goes full demonic and Seth Green proves that death can't stop a good hang. Commissioned by listener Christopher, this Halloween starter brings everything you'd expect from the late '90s: MTV aesthetics, a killer soundtrack, Jessica Alba's scooter, and enough weed jokes to make even Scary Movie blush. But does Idle Hands still hit, or is it just a high school fever dream of Doritos dust and Hot Topic energy? Gene and Big D dig into the film's Columbine-cursed box office fate and confess which '90s music videos helped shape their teenage “spooky season.” Along the way, we get a Fred Willard appreciation moment, a detour into Buffy fandom, and the single weirdest tangent about grasshoppers ever recorded on this podcast. Is Idle Hands an underrated Halloween gem that deserves a second life—or just proof that the devil really does find work for idle bros? Either way, the Spooktacular has begun. Movie Plot:A lazy stoner's hand gets possessed and goes on a killing spree, murdering his parents, friends, and half the Halloween dance. Now Anton, his undead buddies, and a demon-hunting priestess must stop the disembodied hand before it drags his girlfriend to Hell. Bex Frucht is a force of nature—a storyteller and community builder whose work blends performance, land, and small-town life in the American West. Based in Livingston, Montana, she's the founder of TMI Live, a storytelling series that celebrates vulnerability, humor, and human connection, and for the past three years, she's been the “vibe steward” of the Old Salt Festival, where her talent for bringing people together has become legendary. Whether she's hosting a show, coaching storytellers, or emceeing a fundraiser, Bex radiates generosity, intelligence, and positivity in a way that elevates every room she's in. Like so many of my favorite people, her career path is as winding as it is fascinating: a Morehead-Cain Scholar at UNC Chapel Hill, she spent her early years in media and entertainment in New York and Los Angeles, then pivoted to environmental work before landing on a ranch in Colorado to learn about land stewardship from the ground up. Those years on the prairie, combined with her creative life in cities and her Southern roots, helped hone her rare ability to connect seemingly opposite worlds—artists and ranchers, movie stars and cowboys, locals and newcomers—through the shared power of story. In this conversation recorded at her home in Livingston, we trace her inspiring journey and talk about the lessons she's learned along the way: what it means to find your authentic voice, how storytelling can build bridges across divides, and why embracing your weirdness can be the key to a meaningful life. It's a funny, authentic conversation that's as instructive as it is entertaining. For anyone who's ever wondered how to forge their own path, live creatively, and stay grounded in community, this episode is for you. Be sure to check out the episode notes for a full list of all the topics we discussed and links to everything. And give Bex a follow on Instagram to stay in the loop about her upcoming storytelling shows and appearances in Montana and beyond. A police pursuit ended tragically when a suspect jumped a median, was struck, and killed, sparking a debate about whether TV stations should air such footage or risk viewers turning to social media to see it anyway. Another deadly crash in Ontario at the 15 and 10 interchange left three people dead and six hospitalized after semitrucks and multiple vehicles collided. The show then dove into an NFL debate: is it better to be the best player on a losing team or the worst player on a winning one? Tim noted Los Angeles is experiencing one of its lowest levels of production in years, with sets quiet and crews out of work, before sharing some funny and oddly relatable stories about his dry cleaner. The hour wrapped with news that Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly up for sale, as multiple buyers circle the media giant, signaling another possible shakeup in Hollywood.
Bob Pittman and John Sykes, the founders of iHeart, also launched MTV—sparking Petros's memories of MTV's “Summer House,” which he expected to be packed with babes but wasn't quite what he imagined. Tim followed with a surprisingly touching Little League story and advice his dad gave him about his pitching future. NBC Universal's massive $27 billion NBA deal is expected to lose money at first but could pay off long-term by attracting a younger audience. The Dodgers are set to face Toronto in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday, and the team discussed Patrick Hill, a former NFL player who left football to become a nurse. The hour wrapped with a look at Los Alamitos—where the city is reportedly making billions off traffic tickets.

In this episode of TFG Unbuttoned, John and Tim banter about “holding music,” the current political climate, and Halloween. Chocolate costs too much! Also, the US government wants to restrict flights from China that fly over Russia to get here. Russia has restricted US airlines from flying over its airspace to get to China creating longer trips and costs for US carriers versus their Chinese competitors. MTV is ridding itself of music after four decades and Halloween is not immune from the Trump Tariffs. Mike Rowe talks about not being the “dirty jobs” Mike Rowe, planning for the future, being funny in high school, becoming an electrical engineer and giving it up for comedy, performing in NY comedy clubs, Alan Zweibel moving him to LA, roasts, jokes, his book “It's a Funny Thing”, Rodney Dangerfield giving him hope, comedy cliques, and why he's moving to Connecticut. Bio: Michael Rowe is an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer who has worked on many highly regarded comedy and animated shows on television. While still a teenager, Michael began his comedy career as a stand-up comic at such notable New York City clubs as The Improv, The Comedy Cellar and Caroline's. From there, he landed a job writing jokes for SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE's Weekend Update, as well as sketches for shows on MTV, A&E and Comedy Central. Hollywood called, bringing Michael out west to work with Martin Short on his syndicated sketch-comedy show. This soon led to opportunities as a sitcom writer/producer on shows starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Ted Danson, and with Eddie Murphy on his groundbreaking animated series, THE PJs. Michael's affinity for the comedic heart and artistic freedom of animation led to a seven-season run as a writer and Co-Executive Producer of the highly acclaimed series, FUTURAMA. From there, Michael joined FAMILY GUY as a writer/producer and soon after, he became the showrunner for Comedy Central's animated series, BRICKLEBERRY. Along the way Michael was awarded 6 Emmy nominations (with 1 win), 2 Annie Awards (with 2 wins), and a WGA Award for his FUTURAMA episode, Game of Tones. He was also nominated for a Canadian Emmy for his work as Executive Producer and Director on Netflix's animated series, THE TRAILER PARK BOYS. In recent live-action endeavors, Michael was a Co-Executive Producer on the hit TV series, 2 BROKE GIRLS for CBS. As I head past my 2nd anniversary for Revolutions Per Movie, what would be more appropriate than my first-ever Revolutions Per Movie live show back in 2023 with the one and only Peter Buck of R.E.M.!!! Two magical things kicked off before we even got on stage: 1) Peter bought everyone's food and drink for anyone who walked out of REMbyMTV and went to the snack bar, and 2) Peter asked if I could get the audience to sing the Darth Vader theme song as he walked to the stage (because of the cape he was wearing). So enjoy and thanks for supporting the show. (Episode 19 originally aired Jan. 18th 2024).THE ORIGINAL SHOW NOTES:This week's episode was recorded in front of a live audience on Dec. 5th, 2023, at Cinema 21 in Portland, Oregon. Peter Buck of R.E.M. joined us to discuss the documentary R.E.M. by MTV, his early years devouring music, moving to Athens, his first impressions of his bandmates, the surprises of seeing Michael grow as a performer, their relationship with the press, answering fan mail (including Chris reading a letter written to the band in 1984), what influenced songs like Harbourcoat, Michael's approach to Man On The Moon and so much more.We also raised over $4900 for The Jeremy Wilson Foundation, which supports musicians and music industry workers in Oregon during times of medical or health-related challenges. On this episode, we're rewinding to a week when mousse met shoulder pads, Walkmans ruled the school bus, and MTV could anoint a hit before homeroom. Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver kick off this week diving into AI simulations that blur the line between fantasy and reality. From imagining Tyson vs. Frazier to de-aging themselves into a 1991 version of Kliq This, the conversation explores how artificial intelligence could rewrite sports, entertainment, and even history. But as Kev warns, it all comes at an electrifying cost. The mood turns cosmic when Nash brings up “Atlas 31,” a mysterious object moving through space that some conspiracy corners believe isn't just a meteor. What starts as a chat about science spirals into cyanide emissions, alien theories, and how much energy humanity's digital future will really take to sustain. Back on Earth, Nash unpacks the bizarre world of tariff insurance, connecting billion-dollar bets to politics and Wall Street's newest obsession. He then takes us 35,000 feet up with stories from a claustrophobic transatlantic flight—proof that being 6'10" comes with its own turbulence. The pair also debate CM Punk's comments about airport autograph hunters, sharing firsthand stories about wrestling's gray area between fandom and harassment. Nash recalls the tricks, scams, and even a few Sharpie-based revenge tactics from his years on the road. Finally, the episode closes with a flurry of nostalgia and sharp insight—from MTV's fall from cultural dominance to the vanishing art of residual checks and the danger of cold plunges. "Take On Me" by A-ha is an iconic hit of the 1980s. It came out in October 1985 with an equally iconic music video that helped define the age of MTV. It hit #1 in the US and in countries all over the world. And it's still massively popular today. It currently has over two and a half billion streams on Spotify. So, with all of that, it's easy to imagine that this was all inevitable. But actually, the song took so many steps and missteps before it became the hit that everybody knows. I talked to Paul Waaktaar-Savoy from A-ha, who wrote the original bones of the song back when he was a teenager in Norway, years before it came out. The song actually came out and flopped TWICE in the UK, before it found a foothold in the US. So for this episode, Paul took me through the whole history of the song, and all the different versions that existed. And he told me how he and his bandmates, Magne Furuholmen and Morten Harket, pushed and pushed and persevered. "Take On Me" was their first single as a band, and it made them the most successful Norwegian pop group of all time. For more info, visit songexploder.net/a-ha.
