In the summer of 1982, the punky, upbeat sound of Bow Wow Wow's cover of “I Want Candy” served as a perfect compliment to both the warm weather and the music revolution that was MTV. The band was fronted by the very young Annabella Lwin, whose energy, style, and mohawk made her as memorable as the song itself. It was the controversial vision of fashion designer, manager, lyricist, and provocateur Malcolm McLaren that helped propel the band to stardom, but once they achieved success, he grew bored and moved on. The band's demise soon followed, leaving a legacy of quirky music and questionable choices to discuss. This week, we're joined by accomplished podcaster Alex Goldman to do just that, and decide if we can separate the art from the child exploitation.  One Hit Thunder is brought to you by DistroKid, the ultimate partner for taking your music to the next level. Whether you've been diagnosed with schizophrenia or you're supporting someone living with the condition, connecting with others who understand schizophrenia can be a great help. Talking to those who are dealing with the same things you're experiencing can not only help you feel less alone, but also help you learn tips and coping mechanisms from each other, share resources, encourage treatment, and allow you to tell your stories in a safe and accepting environment. But how do you find other people with serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia to connect with? What should you say? Where do you even go? Host Rachel Star Withers, a diagnosed schizophrenic, and co-host Gabe Howard break down how to find other people with schizophrenia and give you a simple opening you can use to build new connections.  Finally, guest Amber (who lives with mental illness) joins. Amber's mental health advocacy journey began when she found out she had schizoaffective disorder and decided to share it on social media. She decided she wanted to help as many with her diagnosis as she could, so she began speaking about her diagnosis regularly on social media. Listener Takeaways Understand why peer connection is unique and how it provides a level of validation that clinical providers often cannot replicate Discover how staying connected to a community can actually improve outcomes  Learn Amber's “Three Pillars of Stability”: consistent support, therapy, and medication Our guest, Amber W, is a wife, mom, and Army veteran. Amber's mental health advocacy journey began when she found out she was schizoaffective bipolar type, and wanted to help fight against stigma. From there, she was invited to a psychiatric hospital to speak about her recovery. This ignited a fire in her; she decided she wanted to help as many with her diagnosis as she could so she began speaking about her diagnosis regularly on social media. Our host, Rachel Star Withers, (Link: www.rachelstarlive.com) is an entertainer, international speaker, video producer, and schizophrenic. She has appeared on MTV's Ridiculousness, TruTV, NBC's America's Got Talent, Marvel's Black Panther, TUBI's #shockfight, Goliath: Playing with Reality, and is the host of the HealthLine podcast “Inside Schizophrenia”. She grew up seeing monsters, hearing people in the walls, and having intense urges to hurt herself. Rachel creates videos documenting her schizophrenia, ways to manage, and letting others like her know they are not alone and can still live an amazing life. She has created a kid's mental health comic line, The Adventures of ____. We get into the pain of being a Sixers fan while getting swept by New York, Dave's first Mother's Day after loss and why Teona needs to apologize, why men remember the exact last time they cried and the worst TV/Movie moms in history. Then we get into News from the Surface, with a Bronx woman pretending to be a teenager for benefits, the AI “rizz bot” doing stand-up comedy, why celeb culture is wild with updates on the singer, D4vd, and we find out there's more Fast&Furious coming down the line, which makes us question whether Vin Diesel has mastered racial ambiguity forever. Episode 2319 - The episode kicks off with a heavy dose of nostalgia—MTV, HBO intros, and the golden era when you had to actually work for your entertainment. That quickly turns into a deeper reflection on why everyone's looking backward lately, with politics, cost of living, and digital overload pushing people toward simpler times. From there, things take a turn into modern weirdness: AI-generated personalities, fake influencers, and the growing sense that nothing online can be trusted. Kid dives headfirst into arguing with AI platforms about data collection and memory limitations, basically trying to break the system out of spite. Meanwhile, the crew bounces between absurd headlines—government helicopters in concert promos, brewery owners getting federal attention for promotions, and the general feeling that reality itself is being staged like bad theater. The middle stretch goes full GDS: a ridiculous breakdown of "how to keep a man happy," debates about sexuality, aging, and porn culture, and a surprisingly thoughtful comparison between old-school MTV eroticism and today's anything-goes internet content. They wrap with rapid-fire topics: controversial music videos, Rock Hall debates, Tinder war stories, and a philosophical argument about why baseball requires more brainpower than soccer—all tied together with a running theme of "everything's changed, but somehow it's also exactly the same."

Butthole Surfers' Paul Leary and King Coffey trace the band's unlikely major label journey — from America's top-grossing indie act to MTV hitmakers to a lost album finally resurrected after nearly three decades. Preorder "After the Astronaut" LP here Topics Include: After the Astronaut releases June 26 after sitting unreleased for 28 years. Capitol signed Butthole Surfers when they were America's top-grossing indie band. Label president Hale Milgram believed in them; his firing changed everything. Pepper was written on the spot after a producer demanded one more song. Pepper won radio call-in polls for a month and played MTV hourly. The hit turned them into a "follow-up band," which was never their thing. John Paul Jones produced Worm Saloon and taught Paul Leary how to produce. Jones and the band shared a Lagavulin obsession, running up a $20,000 scotch bill. Capitol's big budgets contrasted sharply with Touch and Go's approach. After the Astronaut was a deliberate return to experimental, art-school Butthole Surfers DNA. Mark Ryden painted the original cover; getting dropped handed it to Marcy Playground. Declining a Hellraiser soundtrack placement created the first real rift with Capitol. Their manager's heroin relapse coincided with the band getting dropped mid-promo cycle. Promo cassettes already pressed now sell for $800–$1,000 on the secondary market. Hollywood Records funded Weird Revolution; Rob Cavallo showed up once a week for ten minutes. Finding two-inch master tapes in a storage locker triggered the After the Astronaut remix. Documentary The Whole Truth and Nothing But took director Tom Stern five years to make. Rob Reiner called it one of the best music docs ever — hours before his murder. A potential box set looms, but Paul prefers naps, his cat, and his bicycle. Top Gun turns 40, and we can't talk about it without talking about the soundtrack that still punches through your speakers. From the first seconds of Kenny Loggins' “Danger Zone” on the aircraft carrier, we trace how 80s movie music uses needle drops to build character, tension, romance, and pure momentum. We get into the details that make the Top Gun soundtrack legendary: the way the Righteous Brothers' “You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'” revives an older classic for a new generation, how Berlin's “Take My Breath Away” becomes a musical signature for Maverick and Charlie, and why “Great Balls of Fire” remains one of the most unforgettable bar-scene singalongs in film. We also swap quick takes on the movie itself, the sequel callbacks, and why sometimes the music ages even better than the action. Then we jump into our Music in My Shoes picks and stories, including a huge milestone for the show: listeners in 100 countries. Along the way we hit The Kinks, The Doors, Peter Frampton's live-album magic, the Psychedelic Furs “Pretty in Pink” re-recording drama, Robert Palmer's “Addicted to Love” and the power of MTV-era visuals, plus a billion-views moment for the Outfield's “Your Love” and a spring break memory that drilled it into one of our brains forever. His diverse writing background includes serving as a speechwriter for Stevie Wonder and hosting the literary podcast Paraphrase. Stephen lives in Washington, DC, with his wife and two daughters, and his debut novel, Escape!, was inspired by his unique insider perspective on reality television. We had a fantastic time chatting with Stephen about how a harrowing monsoon in the Cambodian jungle finally gave him the focus to pursue serious fiction. We delve into his transition from the "clown music" of reality TV to winning the Pushcart Prize, and how he used his writing to reclaim narrative control in his debut novel. We also talk about his love for the social deduction game Blood on the Clocktower and the meticulous research required to capture the "texture" of life of a professional Marilyn Monroe impersonator.Links:Buy Escape! nowVisit Stephen's websiteFollow Stephen on InstagramSupport us on Patreon and get the podcast early and ad-free, along with other great benefits, including a bonus episodes: https://www.patreon.com/ukpageonePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. Host: James Cox – the “professional handicapped” host who believes that every mood, every scar, and every breakthrough has its own soundtrack.Guest: Verónica Conte‑Reyes – author of “Healing Through the Music of Life” (also released in Portuguese as Cura pela Música da Vida), a memoir that maps a lifetime of adversity, resilience and redemption onto the songs that saved her.In this conversation James and Verónica explore why music can reach us when words fall short. Verónica shares how growing up in a military family—born in Brazil, raised across continents, and steeped in everything from classic vinyl to MTV's rock‑era reels—shaped a musical palate that now spans Imagine Dragons, Coldplay, U2 and Sia. She explains the science of resonance: we vibrate at a frequency, and the songs that match that frequency become our emotional lifelines.Key moments you won't want to miss:The backstory of her book – how a 2018 crash‑year, a coworker's depression, and her mother's bipolar struggle sparked the desire to put life's “chapters” together with an accompanying playlist.Music vs. therapy – why Verónica sees them as complementary, with music acting as an instant, lyrical mirror to feelings that therapy alone can't always surface.Signature tracks – “Thunder” (Imagine Dragons) for the 2018 grind, “Whatever It Takes” for pushing through pain, “The Greatest” (Sia) for those “I'm alive” mornings, and Shawn Mendes' “In My Blood” as a rallying cry for anyone feeling like giving up isn't in their DNA.The acoustic project – an upcoming audiobook and Spanish‑Portuguese translations aimed at making the story accessible to readers with visual or reading challenges.A lightning‑round – quick‑fire favorites (“Seven Wonders” by Fleetwood Mac, “Unstoppable” by Sia) and a punchy mantra: “Music saved me by being my right arm.”Whether you're battling depression, seeking a new playlist to lift you out of the fog, or simply curious about how a song can become a life‑line, this episode offers a heartfelt roadmap. Tune in, let the resonance find you, and remember: when words fail, music speaks.

Episode 381: DJ CUTSO "The DNA of the Bay — From Banning Hyphy to DJ Mustard Adopting the Sound" The legendary @Cutso joins the ROAD Podcast to break down the DNA of the Bay Area scene, the evolution of turntablism, and the reality of balancing a high-level DJ career with a corporate tech job. We dive into his viral "ROAD Talk" interview from NAMM 2026 (2:55), where he addresses the entitlement of new DJs and a social media culture that causes artists to focus on the wrong metrics. Cutso reflects on the "Relationship Economy" and why you cannot get booked without being in the room, while tracing his roots back to the 90s, and the "quick mixing" style that defined the Bay (8:23). He recounts the early influence of MC Hammer and the reverence for D-Styles mixtapes, comparing them to baseball trading cards for the Hip Hop community (13:55). The conversation shifts to the rise and fall of turntablism, exploring how the genre moved from MTV back to the underground before social media re-ignited interest in technical skills (19:42), alongside the divide between Jiggy and Backpack Hip Hop. We tackle the "Great Heist" of the Bay Area sound, debating how the "Mustard Era" effectively mainstreamed a signature NorCal aesthetic (40:35), and explore the @FrandalayBay connection that brought Hyphy to Vegas while it was still banned in Bay Area clubs (24:20). Cutso shares stories of being kicked out of booths for playing "Burn Rubber" (28:26) and provides a candid look at San Jose, from the "Crypto-House" scene to the economic crisis and tech layoffs impacting local venues. After discussing Hollywood's disconnect from LA culture, and Crooked's infamous night at Club Wet (50:05), Cutso opens up about the "Dual Life" of juggling a corporate career with DJing (1:09:15), finding discipline through Kung Fu (1:19:01), and why open format DJs are built to survive shifting musical trends (1:48:24).
