This week, we light a candle for lost legends and torch a few bad takes. In Follow Up, Molly White reminds us that giving a damn still matters—despite the rising tide of apathy (and flaming robotaxis in downtown L.A.). Protesters across the country chant “No Kings!” while Elon does his best impression of a bootlicker groveling back to Trump. Meanwhile, we take a moment to reflect on 2025's greatest hits: riots, rollbacks, and rampant idiocy. In the news, Uber decides buses are cool again—but shittier and more expensive. The UK jumps into the robotaxi game while Tesla, shockingly, misses another launch date. French Tesla fans are suing over the brand's fashy vibes, Google is ghosting employees via buyout, and Meta's trying to buy its way to artificial godhood. Oh, and Trump's launching an AI chatbot. What could go wrong? Elsewhere, China turns off AI so kids can cheat the old-fashioned way, Disney and Universal are gunning for Midjourney, and Shopify goes stablecoin with Coinbase and Stripe.Media Candy's popping off: Foundation returns, Strange New Worlds prepares for its final warp, and Spaceballs is back—with the original cast! Meanwhile, we review Mythfits, Princess of Power, and the slow striptease that is David Zaslav's credibility. On the gadget front: forget your canned air—go full vacuum-blower-keyboard-cleaner madness. And in The Dark Side with Dave, stormtroopers vlog, AI kills joy, and we race the beam in retro game land. Finally, we say goodbye to a few greats—Sly Stone, Brian Wilson, Ananda Lewis, Douglas McCarthy, and Apple legend Bill Atkinson. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 569 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Don't touch Mr Frost's Muff and Brian makes a huge confession Good Morning tonechasers! Brian van Winkel has aroused himself from his slumber and he is suffering from a severe case of builders' crack but has invented the successor to MTV so all is well. Do you enjoy making music? Some Ai feller thinks that the fun is not in the playing and the guys rage apoplectic at this outrageous notion. Brian tries to describe a famous cryptid and fails and the irony is observed. The rise of Ai videos has got the guys worried (again) so Richard asks the machine what Brian thinks about Pink Floyd...and he makes a huge surprise confession! Richard is sad about the death of Sly Stone and pays tribute to one of his favorite musical bandleaders of all time. Should Wampler make a new tweaked Tumnus? There was a post in the Wampler Facebook group and Richard challenges Brian with the idea. Richard has an idea for a new video series and Blake is not impressed as he repeats his explanations. He has also has visited the worst pub in the world and tells us about it. Blake is excited by the Wigan kebab. Hey everyone...in honor of our upcoming 100th episode (!!!), I'll be re-releasing a few of my favorite past conversations on Tuesdays. This one was a lifelong dream for me: getting to talk to DEVO's Gerald V. Casale about their body of work--a band whose musical and visual identity showed teenage me that it was o.k. to be different, weird, and skeptical. Jerry does not suffer fools gladly, so I was quite nervous going into the interview, but once he realized I wasn't going ask about the flower pot hats, we both relaxed and took a serious deep dive into how he and DEVO altered the world forever, as well as how lonely that could be for them. Episode 35 originally aired on May 9th, 2024.The original podcast show notes:This week, the one that started it all for me, Devo's Jerry Casale, joins me on the podcast to talk about Devo's film and video legacy. We discuss the origin story of their first short film, the films that influenced Casale and Devo's aesthetic, their early jobs and the pressures of Ohio, how ‘Bonnie & Clyde' influenced the 'Beautiful World' video, meeting collaborator Chuck Statler, where Rod Rooter's dialogue came from, Club Devo and the difficulties making their merchandise, Jerry tells the plot of the Devo feature-length film script that never got made (including one that was going into production with Francis Ford Coppola & one with William Friedkin), how they directed their conservative looking extras and General Boy, meeting their idols, how they constructed their live shows, phone calls from the video Commissioner of MTV, censorship, working with Soundgarden, Bruce Connor's ‘Mongoloid' short film, transgressive art, people being scared of Devo, Kent State & the Vietnam War as the antecedents of Devolution, crawling out of the basement, the communal mindset of the members of Devo, the antagonistic nature against Devo from interviewers, having fun with the audience while rubbing their nose in it, the groundbreaking & primitive ‘Oh No It's Devo' tour, making ‘The Men Who Make The Music' and having your own action figure made of you.So...peek-a-boo...let's all get devolved together on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!JERRY CASALE (videos, action figures, music, art):https://www.geraldvcasale.com/DEVO:https://www.clubdevo.com/REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. In our third installment of Surviving the 90s, we're revisiting one of the arena rock powerhouses of the late '70s and early '80s — Foreigner. Known for a string of massive hits like "Cold as Ice," "Hot Blooded," "Urgent," "Juke Box Hero," and the chart-topping ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is," Foreigner dominated radio and MTV in their prime. Albums like Double Vision, Head Games, and 4 went multi-Platinum, cementing their legacy. But as the musical landscape shifted in the 90s, the band faced lineup changes and a changing industry. Though new material was scarce, they continued touring and remained a fixture on classic rock airwaves. We revisit their biggest hits, their activity in the 90s, and try to determine: did Foreigner thrive, adapt, or fade during the decade? In this part one of another epic two parter, Sara J is joined by the RoughGauge June 2025 featured artist Marc Shapiro.Marc takes us through his influences, and how Slash and Appetite for Destruction played a major role. Marc's shares his love for digging into his favorite guitars player's heroes, going down a rabbit hole that includes a dive into how John Fruciante has a lot of Hendrix in his playing.Marc shares the eclecticness of what he listens to, and how watching MTV after school when he was younger did good things for his musical pallet. They talk about having the guitar player spirit, the perhaps controversial thought of minimal notes - and how sometimes more is said within the silence. Marc gives a peek into what he's listening to currently and the music he's loving that's coming out of Australia. Marc talks about his passion for following the lineage of a sound, and the evolution of guitar playing and music. The duo gets into music biographies, ones they've read and what's next on their list.Marc talks about getting his first guitar when he was ten, followed by his first electric a year later and knowing that being a musician was his dream once he started playing. He relives elementary school, singing and performing 90's grunge tunes at talent shows and back to school night.Marc recalls playing in his older brother's band, and at his bar mitzvah party, an evening that would include Marc crowd surfing. He shares the experience of throwing a music festival - The Rez Ball with his band The Rez, the year he sprained his ankle right before he was about to play two sets, which also happened to be the same summer he played at Warped Tour. Marc shares how he found himself playing with his current projects Greasy Hands and Infinite Drift.Lefties unite! Marc elaborates on what it's like playing left handed, the advantages and disadvantages - and the joy of finding a leftie guitar out in the wild. Susie and Sarah are headed to a baseball game, but first Susie needs to explain the importance of safety and the precariousness of Buc Fever after a man recently fell at a game. We disuss the P Diddy sketch artist who appears to have the same talent as the recent caricaturist Sarah had, and why Sarah thinks he doesn't know how to draw people of color. We talk about the Pee Wee Herman documentary, how he came to resent the character he created, and how creativity can be a burden. Susie describes the Nathan Fielder docu-comedy series, The Rehearsal, and the way pilots could be saved through a small change in training and how the comedian is trying to save lives through updates to aviation.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Get 25% off your first month of Ritual when you visit https://ritual.com/BRAINCANDY and add Essential Protein today.New customers can get the Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara and a mini-sized Brilliant Eye Brightener at a special set price with free shipping at https://thrivecausemetics.com/BRAINCANDYSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Flesh & Blood, the third studio album by Poison, finds the group at the top of their form. The team of Bret Michaels on lead vocals, C.C. DeVille on lead guitar, Bobby Doll on bass, and Rikki Rockett on drums had been quite successful in the glam metal genre of the mid-80's, and had developed a reputation for a "work hard, play hard" mentality. While they had a legendary stage presence, they also were plagued with fights both within and outside of the band. A number of lawsuits in various cities were predicated on Michaels' tendency to get into fights at parties and other events. Despite these issues - or perhaps because of them - their reputation only grew over time. Flesh & Blood is an album that is more challenging musically than the earlier ones. The band is toning down their glam metal persona and taking on more serious lyrical themes. Songs cover a wide range from sex and motorcycles, to struggles with long term relationships, to frustration with the struggles seen in society. The band would drop the excessive makeup of their earlier career, and found the songs on a more blues-oriented rock. More piano work is included, with keyboardist John Webster contributing to the album sessions. The result was a success, reaching triple platinum status by 1991. The album peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and number 3 on the UK albums chart. This album would be a kind of high water mark for the group, as the industry was moving away from the metal sound of the late 80's and into the grunge sound of the mid-1990's. However, the group would go on to record and tour into the new millennium, and Bret Michaels would become both a solo act and a celebrity with his MTV reality show "Rock of Love with Bret Michaels."Lynch brings us a look at a somewhat more mature Poison on this week's for today's podcast. Unskinny BopNot every song has deep or significant lyrics. This hit single from the album started as a nonsense lyric, a placeholder that stuck. The catchy repetition would make it a crowd favorite at concerts, and it was a top 10, going to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.Valley of Lost SoulsA deeper cut, this song lyrics talk about the life of a rock artist struggling to make it in a place without compassion. It is a slower piece, but definitely not a ballad. Life Goes OnC.C. DeVille brought the original draft of this song to the band. The lyrics were inspired by a girlfriend of DeVille who was shot and killed in a California bar fight, and describe the quest for light at the end of a dark period in life.Something to Believe InThis ballad was the second single released from the album, and went to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Bret Michaels dedicated this song to his friend and bodyguard James Kimo Maano who had died previously. The lyrics reflect the frustration in the failures of society, from poverty, to the treatment of Vietnam veterans, to the hypocrisy of televangelists. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:You're In the Doghouse Now by Brenda Lee (from the motion picture “Dick Tracy”)This action movie based on the comic series from the 1930's starred Warren Beatty in the title role, along with Al Pacino and Madonna. STAFF PICKS:Ball and Chain by Social DistortionWayne kicks off the staff picks with a more alternative rock song penned by a punk rock band from their third and self-titled album. The lyrics describe a hard luck story of a man who can't escape his difficulties. It could be about a relationship, a rut in life, or about any vice that holds you down.Way Down Now by World PartyRob's staff pick is the first single from World Party's second studio album, "Goodbye Jumbo." If you hear echoes of "Sympathy for the Devil," that is deliberate - though the song is much more upbeat. It reached number 1 on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart. World Party is primarily a one-man project from multi-instrumentalist Karl Wallinger from the Waterboys.Tie Dye on the Highway by Robert PlantBruce brings us a song off plant's fifth studio album "Manic Nirvana." The spoken line, "What we have in mind is breakfast in bed for 400,000." is from Wavy Gravy and the Hog Farm Collective, delivered at the Woodstock festival in 1969 announcing the intention to provide free breakfast to the crowd. Kool Thing by Sonic YouthLynch closes out the staff picks with a song critical of the over-the-top masculinity of LL Cool J. It was the first single from their sixth studio album, "Goo." The track never mentions LL Cool J personally, but references a number of his works. Chuck D. of Public Enemy provides the spoken vocals to the song.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Mildred Pierce by Sonic YouthWe double up on Sonic Youth as we end today's podcast with their instrumental based on a 1945 film noir starring Joan Crawford. Peter Coyne in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.thegodfathersofficial.com/ 2025 sees The Godfathers celebrate the historic milestone of the 40th anniversary since their formation with multiple record releases as well as tours & festivals across the UK, Europe and around the world. An 18-track compilation entitled Electric Déjà Vu featuring numbers personally selected by The Godfathers' founder and frontman Peter Coyne from the band's three most recent critically acclaimed studio albums - 2013's Jukebox Fury, 2017's A Big Bad Beautiful Noise and 2022's Alpha Beta Gamma Delta - is set for release in early April.A brand new studio single will follow in the Summer with an archive double-live album promised for later in the year. These releases pave the way for a much anticipated album of new material in 2026.The Godfathers were formed in 1985 by brothers Peter Coyne (vocals) and Chris Coyne (bass/vocals) from the ashes of their previous band The Sid Presley Experience. They toured extensively and quickly earned a serious reputation for their electrifying brand of primal rock & roll & their incendiary live shows around the world. Forming a recording partnership with famed producer Vic Maile, they released four critically acclaimed, smash hit independent singles on their own Corporate Image label (‘Lonely Man', ‘This Damn Nation', ‘I Want Everything' and ‘Love Is Dead') which alongside a brutal cover of Lennon's ‘Cold Turkey' were compiled into their seminal debut album release Hit By Hit in '86 and signed a worldwide deal with Sony/Epic records in ‘87. The Godfathers unleashed the storming rocker ‘Birth School Work Death' as a single in '87 and scored a US Billboard top 40 hit after massive college radio airplay and heavy MTV rotation. Then the classic Birth School Work Death album was released in '88 (includes the hit anthem title track and singles ‘Cause I Said So' and a re-recorded ‘Love Is Dead') and was promoted with extensive tours of the UK, Europe and America as they cemented their reputation as one of the best live acts of the period. Celebrity fans included among others David Bowie and Johnny Depp.

1991 starts with a bang! Or is it a twist? The Traveling Wilburys' latest single The Wilbury Twist is the latest release from the super-group whose popularity continued well on into the new year, and signaled the continued resilience of the George Harrison comeback of the prior decade. While George and pals were twisting, Paul McCartney was back on stage with a new iteration of his touring band - this time to to kick-off the new MTV show titled Unplugged. In one of the most intimate and deep-cut-laden performances of his post-Beatles career, McCartney too was on a winning streak into 1991 - and this was only the beginning... Hosted on Acast. The music industry has always had its megastars akin to today's super-performers like Taylor Swift, Drake and Morgan Wallen. However, there was a glorious decade from the early 1980s into the 1990s when the planets aligned and money gushed out to a select few artists who commandeered the industry. Major record labels, commercial radio, and MTV conspired to create a consumer hunger for physical products - vinyl, cassette and CD albums and singles, readily available at record stores and department stores at every mall and shopping center. The artists behind these albums were mostly in their 20s and 30s, "video friendly" and talented enough (with the help of the right production teams) to churn out catchy hooks for their blockbuster albums, which could spawn enough carefully timed singles that could keep the artist near the top of the sales charts for two or three years at a time, often overlapping with their next album release. Were these the best artists in the history of popular music? Not really. But their timing was phenomenal. These days commercial radio is just a hint of what it once was, MTV doesn't even play music videos and consumers can simply stream everything they want to hear without having to buy anything. On this episode of "How We Heard It," your hosts explain what led up to the music industry's glory days and how artists like Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and Whitney Houston cashed in. And they talk about how Taylor Swift and others are still finding their way.

Sarah got mixed up in a felony and for a second was going to take matters into her own hands and try to apprehend the bandit because she "loves justice." Thankfully she realized Ann Taylor Loft's Loss Prevention isn't worth fighting for. Scientists turned a spider web red, and while we want to be excited we can't figure out why we should care. We discuss our least favorite creatures and we realize Susie's hatred of stink bugs is the insect equivalent of Sarah's fear of things that scurry. We learn the connection between golf courses and a neurological disease. Sarah watched a short film about people who dress up in crane costumes and dance to help the species, and she loves it so much, but Susie can't get past the documentary's name. But the real magic happened at the end of the show when Susie found out the Cheers' actor George Wendt died, and we lose our minds about the crazy coincidence of her finding out today.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comRead this week's Newsletter: https://mailchi.mp/thebraincandypodcast/photograph-scandal-turning-point-how-to-be-happyConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:For 20% off your order, head to https://www.harvesthosts.com and use code BRAINCANDYFor 15% off your order and a special gift, head to https://pacagen.com/braincandyCancel your unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster with Rocket Money. This week, I am joined by Jake Fogelnest, who at the age of 14 hosted MTV's Squirt TV, and later collaborated with Will Ferrell, Sarah Silverman & Billy Eichner. We take a look at the Bee Gees/Peter Frampton mess-a-thon theatrical feature SGT. PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND.We also discuss how Jake turned his childhood cable access show (shot in his bedroom!) into a full-fledged MTV show, getting his hair cut on TV by Kim Gordon, the day Cypress Hill showed up to his bedroom, the difficulties of the MTV show getting cancelled and his struggle with addiction, how the Beatles were less protective of their legacy than we thought, the military aspects of Sgt. Pepper's, how we never noticed the military aspects of Sgt. Pepper's, the legacy of Robert Stigwood's powerhouse career, Grease, Robin Gibb's grandiose delusion that this film's music was going to replace the legacy of The Beatles' original, how this was Steve Martin's film debut, how it felt watching the film as kids, the movie Car Wash, the PG-13 version of Saturday Night Fever, the cult musical film The Apple, the fight scene between Peter Frampton & Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, the incredible Alice Cooper cult leader scene, Sandy Farina as Strawberry Fields, speculating if anyone ever cried watching the film, Xanadu, Billy Preston saving the day, our alternate endings of Sgt. Pepper's, who are all the artists that appeared in the film's big finale, finding peace of mind from just hanging out in a video store and more!So let's run from that wicked Mean Mr. Mustard and his two latex-clad gimb-bots on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie! The Glam Album That's Actually Power Pop Gold: Enuff Z'Nuff's Dazzling 1989 DebutYou've seen the neon. You've heard the name. But have you listened? Enuff Z'Nuff's self-titled 1989 debut is a glittering paradox: glam on the outside, power pop on the inside. Packed with lush harmonies, Beatlesque melodies, and MTV-ready swagger, it was a record caught between worlds—and in this episode, we unpack every hook, story, and squealing solo.We dig into why this record, released in the chaos of late-'80s rock, still feels so timeless. From the genre-defying sound to the band's rollercoaster history, we explore what makes Enuff Z'Nuff an underdog classic that not only beat Iron Maiden in a fan vote, but continues to inspire debate decades later. If you're into Cheap Trick, Jellyfish, The Posies, or even early Oasis, this one's for you. It's glam with heart. Pop with punch. And a whole lot of sequins.

In 1993, MTV aired a music video for the song “Runaway Train” by Soul Asylum. In the video, names and photographs of real missing people were featured. In that music video, the picture of fifteen-year-old Vicky Hamilton is displayed just long enough to burn the image of the girl with the short bob haircut into your mind. When the video was made, Vicky had been missing from her family in Scotland for two years. A little while later in the video, there is another photograph of a girl, Dinah McNicol, an 18-year-old from Essex, in the UK, who had just finished her A-level exams. When the Soul Asylum video was made, Dinah had also been missing for two years. Aside from the fact that both girls went missing six months apart in the same year, and aside from the fact that they both appeared in the same music video, two other things connected these girls. They had both been murdered by the same man. And they both shared the same grave.Join Jen and Cam as we discuss the chilling case of Peter Tobin, one of the UK's most depraved serial killers. We explore how his unassuming life as a handyman masked a brutal reality, leading to the murders of Angelika Kluk, Vicky Hamilton, and Dinah McNicol.*Come join Jen and Cam in Italy 2026*We are touring Italy in 2026, and would love for you to come along! As The Wolf & Action Jackson grew up throughout the 1980s and their taste for guitar driven rock music grew, the legend of Jimi Hendrix always loomed large. A left-handed virtuoso who blew away all the other guitar gods of his generation, Hendrix remains a legend more than 50 years after his death. When the boys created First Concert Memories to help capture and share true rock n roll stories, they hoped that one day they'd have someone on to talk about the legendary Jimi Hendrix. Thanks to DJ Danny Meyers of What's Hot In The Strip Clubs Podcast, they got a first hand account and are sharing it with the world! We go back to Friday, November 15, 1968 in Cincinnati, Ohio where we find a 13 year old Danny hanging out at his buddy's house. At some point, his buddy asks his dad if he'd take them to the Jimi Hendrix show at Cincinnati Gardens. Not only did his dad say yes but $20 got all four of them tickets, a soft drink and a dime for a phone call to come get them afterward. Soon the teenagers found themselves in front of the guitar legend, hoping that he would break his guitar on the stage at the end and waiting for their favorite, Purple Haze. Hear about the show, the boys quest to buy beer, the trials of attempting to get backstage and the atmosphere of the show. Danny also let's the guys in on life in the late 60s with no MTV, Creem magazine or internet to help them get to know the artists of the day. In this high-energy episode of Dem Vinyl Boyz, we rewind to the late '90s and crank up Blink-182’s Enema of the State—the 1999 album that catapulted pop punk into the mainstream and made suburban angst, crude jokes, and catchy hooks a winning formula. With its mix of fast-paced guitars, bratty humor, and heartfelt teenage confusion, this record became the voice of a generation of misfits, skaters, and mall punks. Featuring anthems like "What’s My Age Again?," "All the Small Things," and "Adam’s Song," Enema of the State perfectly balances fun and feeling. It introduced the world to drummer Travis Barker, tightened the band’s sound, and turned Blink-182 into MTV darlings. More than just a pop punk milestone, it captured the restless spirit of youth and made it singable, loud, and unforgettable. In this episode, we dive into the band’s evolution, the album’s cultural impact, and how Enema of the State helped shape the pop-punk explosion of the early 2000s. Whether you're reliving your high school years or discovering the band for the first time, this album still hits just as hard—and just as hilariously—as it did in '99. Join Dem Vinyl Boyz as we laugh, mosh, and reminisce through Blink-182’s Enema of the State—a record that proves growing up is overrated.

Sarah had a "tick fiasco" in the wilderness, and she'll never be the same. We get some updates from Susie about Pete Rose's eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame since his death and we hear the scandal involving the Napalm Girl image we discussed recently, and how the wrong photographer may have taken credit for the last fifty years. We hear actually useful happiness tips that are more fun than the usual ones we already know. We learn about scientists who trained parrots to video call each other, and why Sarah wants to know if they were actually "talking" to each other. And we hear how the social birds were also the most likeable. Sarah thought she was being frugal and industrious, but now she has a stained sink and a broken olive oil dispenser. We learn why an AI tech bro wants to see your eyeballs, and Susie's mad about it. We hear cicadas play Pachelbel's Canon in D on their abdomen (or buttholes?). Sarah says an adult star got a billboard to advertise her OnlyFans, but Christians are defacing it for Jesus. We find out what causes someone to have a breakthrough in therapy. And we hear how the whale equivalent of acne allows them to navigate and migrate successfully.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Visit https://shopbeam.com/BRAINCANDY and use code BRAINCANDY to get our exclusive discount of up to 35% off.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
