Judd is back with a new Hilo Holiday special coming in October. We talk about his run on Marvel's Exiles, and his early days breaking into comics with his comic strip Frumpy the Clown. He looks back on his unlikely path into comics, from breaking into newspaper strips with guidance from his mentor, Cathy creator Cathy Guisewite, to meeting legendary Peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. He also reflects on his life-changing experience as a cast member on MTV's The Real World and how his acclaimed graphic novel Pedro and Me, chronicling his friendship with Pedro Zamora, brought him to the attention of DC Comics and launched the next chapter of his career.

In Part Two, Judd Winick explains how he parlayed his fame from MTV's The Real World into a meeting with editor Bob Schreck and an invitation to write for DC Comics. This week on the show, we welcome Nashville-based music journalist, critic and author Erin Osmon, to discuss her tremendous book, Won't Back Down: Heartland Rock and the Fight for America, which chronicles how heartland rock, typified by artists like Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, and more, brought a populist, Americana-inspired sound to the airwaves of the radio and MTV. Along the way, Osmon shines a light on lesser heralded artists in the heartland canon, including Bonnie Raitt, Lucinda Williams, and Tracy Chapman, explores the impact of the shift from vinyl and tape to compact discs, the ubiquity of synthesizer technology, and the progressive undercurrent that propels this music.  Osmon's writing has appeared in the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone, and the New York Times, and she's the author of a 33 ⅓ book on John Prine and Jason Molina: Riding with the Ghost. With Won't Back Down, she traces the origins of heartland rock and its influence on artists like The War on Drugs and The Hold Steady, and best of all, offers deep insight into the complex characters of its most notable figures. Especially intriguing is the Indiana-born Osmon's focus on fellow Hoosier John “Cougar” Mellencamp, who emerges as one of the most fascinating characters, a hothead with a leftist heart and punk rock verve.  This year marks the 250th birthday of America, and this conversation was taped this conversation just a few days before the 4th of July. We haven't been feeling all that patriotic—maybe it has something to do with the fascists governing our country and their endless commitment to foreign wars and environmental destruction—but Osmon's book reminds us that this country has at its core something more noble, some promise that has not been stamped out just yet. What if the most important thing you'll ever know about yourself has never actually been said out loud? Not because you're hiding it. Because somewhere along the way you built a fortress around it, and the fortress has no windows. Today's guest understands that fortress from the inside. At 19 years old, a week after his birthday, Aaron Bethune stood 200 meters from the summit of Aconcagua, one of the world's Seven Summits. He turned back. Not because he could not make it. Because he realized he had never once visualized the descent. On the way back down, alone, he found an Everest veteran named Mike lying in the snow, lost and frostbitten, meters from a three- thousand-meter drop. Aaron gave him his food and water and carried him down. He has never seen Mike since. He has been looking for him for twenty-six years.  Aaron Bethune is the founder of We Write Stories, author of Musicpreneur (now used as a university textbook), and a musician since age four who has worked with Showtime, Spotify, MTV, and the Grammys. He led a project for the Gwich'in First Nations to help protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. In this conversation, Aaron and Dov unpack why the most capable leaders spend their entire careers focused on the ascent, and have no strategy for the descent when it inevitably comes.
