On the 73rd Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom & Zeus welcome back special guest, the host of the Busted Open Radio on Sirius XM and Shout It Out Loudcast Hall Of Famer, Dave LaGreca, to review the 1981 classic ACDC album "For Those About To Rock We Salute You." ACDC was just coming off their major breakthrough album Back In Black with their classic lineup of new singer Brian Johnson, the incredible dual guitars of brothers, Angus & Malcolm Young and the underrated Cliff Williams on bass and Phil Rudd on drums. For Those About To Rock We Salute You made it to #1 on Billboard album charts and eventually went 4 X platinum. This was ACDC's first #1 album led by their title track which even has a video that was in heavy rotation on MTV. This album continued the ACDC formula of guitar rock at its best. The band was becoming legendary and this album cemented them as one of the greatest bands in all of rock history. This was Tom's pick and as usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. So tune in to find why are we discussing Billy Ocean, CM Punk and Nicole Bass oh yeah and ACDC! Whisp Turlington enters 2026 determined to be “full of light” and permanently high-vibing — a plan that immediately collapses under the weight of Instagram stories, sauce-list politics, Whisp and Geoff's rival station beef with 98.6 The Squirt, and a catastrophic misunderstanding involving Enya.As Whisp attempts to record the perfect Instagram message from the front seat of his limousine, the broadcast spirals through haunted MTV memories, dead-mall real estate, non-denominational church bands, Farmer Dan's hell gate, sponsor live reads that absolutely should not be allowed on air, and Whisp's revelation to Geoff of why Enya is definitely not calling in today.Sponsored by:Val Verde Memorial HospitalLittle FeetBad Company Fudge CompanyBecome One With The HawkSubscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube — wherever you listen. The death of Alex Pretti in a shooting by federal agents has raised concerns with a group of americans not known for criticizing the Trump administration advocates for the second amendment. Dana Loesch, a radio host and former spokesperson for the National Rifle Association joins us to discuss. Super Bowl LX is set. The Church are a bit of an enigma in the rock world. Though best known for their breakout 1988 song Under The Milky Way off of Starfish. Prior to that they'd had an unexpected Australian anthem in An Unguarded Moment. But they didn't want to be a pop band - they saw themselves as members of the new psychedelic movement. So the cover of Heyday (released in Australia late 1985 but in the US January 28, 1986) you can see the lads sporting some paisley shirts against a Persian Rug. But at that point, they'd already abandoned their psychedelic leanings for their own AOR stylings. The album Heyday, produced by Peter Walsh (Simple Minds) provides some entrancing guitar work with lyrics from Steve Kilbey that go from seeing behind the curtain of fame (Disenchanted) to unending sadness (Tristesse) to vain plastic surgery junkies (Youth Worshipper). Peter Koppes and Marty Wilson-Piper offer intricate and jangling guitars which make for 120 Minutes gold on MTV and can even put you into a bit of a trance. Myrrh and Tantalized proved to be all time favorites of Church fans and are still part of the band's setlist to this day. However, though songs like Columbus and Already Yesterday may have been enjoyed by fans of the band, they failed to crack the charts the way the record company had hoped. Still, the band were able to tour the US with Echo & The Bunnymen which helped them break down some doors and win some fans. Though they were dropped by their record companies after Heyday, this led to them being picked up by Arista, which led to Starfish and success in the US and around the world. It may not be multi-platinum but Heyday would help define the sound of The Church, allowed them to write songs together and create a foundation that built towards greater success. In the spotlight is Jesse Kavadlo, author of “Rock of Pages,” a book inspired by his decades of work as a professor of literature and as a musician. In “Rock of Pages,” Kavadlo analyzes the ways in which 1980s heavy metal aligns with and develops many of the themes prevalent in the canon of literature. In doing so, the book examines some of the contexts of 1980s heavy metal, including the Cold War, the rise of MTV, and the formation of the Parents Music Resource Center and subsequent congressional hearings. Picture the scene: It's 1983 on the East side of town in Zion, Illinois! You're hanging out at your buddy Russ Spice's house. Playing Judas Priest songs on your Harmony guitars and watching “The Song Remains The Same” on MTV. Instead of James Dean in “Rebel Without A Cause”, our movie idol is Sean Penn as Jeff Spicoli (is it still playing at the Dunes?). Maybe later we'll ride our bikes down to the lake and swim in the heated shadow of the nuclear power plant and pray that we don't grow up to be toxic avenging freaks. And then, hopefully, we can scrape enough pot seeds together so we can smoke ‘em through a beer can and get a cheap buzz going — after which, we'll convince ourselves we have the munchies and try to get Curt to spend his News-Sun paper route money on lunch at Pizza House. It was a glorious time…

Embracing the “Open” in Open Nesting (Season 6 | Episode 222) with Joy Rose (Season 6 | Episode 222) This week on the Open Nesters podcast, my co-host Amir and I had the absolute pleasure of revisiting a truly boundary-breaking conversation with the incredible Joy Rose. As an artist, activist, and the visionary founder of the Museum of Motherhood, Joy is a master at helping us deconstruct the heavy labels we carry and reclaim the narrative of our own lives. If you are currently navigating your own “Act Three,” this discussion is essential listening for finding your vitality and flipping the script on aging. We dove deep into the complex world of motherhood —to explore how this role often consumes our identity for decades. Joy shares the raw, honest truth about the “redundancy” many of us feel when our children grow older. It can be an almost impossible shift to move from the physical and emotional all-consumption of active parenting to a life where that role is no longer necessary in the same way. Joy's personal journey is a masterclass in finding the “self” at the center of the roles projected onto us. As her own four children have grown into their late twenties and thirties, she has had to learn the difficult art of adjustment, using tools like cultivating her own passions and finding serenity through spiritual programs like Al-Anon. One of the most striking parts of our talk was Joy's take on modern relationships and her rejection of traditional marriage. She spoke beautifully about seeking “great love”—the kind of love that pushes you out of your comfort zone and requires you to show up with integrity and consciousness. It was so illuminating to hear how she and her partner, despite being on opposite ends of the political spectrum, find deep connection through simple kindness and shared values. For those of you looking to explore these themes further, Joy is continuing her work by launching online classes through the Museum of Motherhood website. She encourages everyone, especially “women of a certain age,” to be brave, be expansive, and stop repeating patterns that no longer serve them. Whether it’s through art, study, or simply trying to live on your own, there are so many ways to “show up” for yourself in this new stage of life. We are so grateful to Joy for her wisdom and for helping us “unlabel” the judgments we often place on ourselves and others. As we move forward, I hope you'll join us in witnessing the growth of our families and ourselves with open hearts and fewer expectations. Men regimen sätter in militär mot demonstranterna.
This week I bring you a video version of last year's MTV Summer series. 2025 marked the end of MTV as we know it, although it is not completely wiped from the airwaves. I wanted to mark its cultural demise with a bang—more specifically, the fondled trigger of Fiona Apple's gun. The video vixens, like Alicia Silverstone and Erin Everly, who lit up the visuals for rock gods, are the sisters of the siren writhing on the floor, mouthing vitriolic truths about gender dynamics.

For decades, the narrative surrounding schizophrenia has focused almost exclusively on controlling symptoms. But with no cure, can someone actually get better? Recovery in the context of schizophrenia isn't about the absence of symptoms. It's a deeply personal process — one that centers on restoring hope, self-determination, and a meaningful life, even when hallucinations, delusions, and setbacks continue to exist. In this episode, host Rachel Star Withers, who lives openly with schizophrenia, and co-host Gabe Howard explore what recovery really means for people with serious mental illness. From clinical symptom remission and functional abilities to redefining purpose and identity, they unpack how recovery can look — and why it rarely fits the “back to normal” expectation held by loved ones and society. Later in the episode, Dr. Mark Ragins, who is a pioneer and leading voice in person-centered, recovery-based psychiatry, joins the conversation. Listener takeaways why people — not illness — should be at the center of treatment how recovery can include setbacks and still be real progress how the psychosis triangle explains both breakdown and healing how relationships can stabilize psychosis even when symptoms persist Listen now as this episode challenges outdated ideas of recovery, validating lived experience and showing how a meaningful life is possible with schizophrenia, symptoms and all. Our guest, Mark Ragins, MD, has been a psychiatrist for 40 years, working in community mental health centers, as the Medical Director for 27 years at the Mental Health America Village in Long Beach, California, an award-winning model of recovery-based mental health services, as the students' psychiatrist at Cal State Long Beach, and on street medicine teams working with homeless people on the streets throughout LA county. His book, “Journeys Beyond the Frontier: A Rebellious Guide to Psychosis and Other Extraordinary Experiences,” is based on true stories of working with some of the most underserved and difficult-to-engage people in our community. Countless people have come to experience the work being done at the Village firsthand and Mark has given hundreds of presentations and lectures to wide-ranging audiences nationally and internationally. He is one of the true pioneers and leaders of person-centered, recovery-based psychiatry. Many of his writings are posted online at markragins.com, including his short book A Road to Recovery. He was also featured in Steve Lopez's book The Soloist. Over the years, Mark has won a number of awards, including from the American Psychiatric Association, the Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, NAMI, and Mental Health Advocacy Services. Given the MTV buzz and debutantal boom the Bangles experienced during the second half of their run, it's easy to forget their debut LP is a bonafide hitless alt-rock classic. All Over the Place reminds us that the Bangles were a really cool Paisley Underground band before the Egyptian pantomimes and Prince lil' purple penis pageantry.

What if the “dumb party metal” you grew up with turned out to be one of the sharpest mirrors of 1980s America? In this episode of Dig Me Out: 80s Metal, we sit down with author, professor, and 80s tribute-band guitarist Jesse Kavadlo to talk about his new book Rock of Pages: The Literary Tradition of 1980s Heavy Metal and why those songs about girls, demons, and good times were actually wrestling with nuclear fear, censorship, and what it meant to grow up under the Cold War.Jesse walks us through how 80s metal lyrics connect to classic literature, from Def Leppard reimagining Genesis and Paradise Lost to Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne grappling with existential dread, addiction, and the possibility of global annihilation. We dig into the PMRC hearings and satanic panic, the way MTV videos turned escapism into literal chains and magic portals, and how Stranger Things surprisingly nails the mix of danger and freedom that metal kids actually felt in the 80s. Along the way, we talk subculture vs. streaming-era playlists, why Dio and Iron Maiden might be the true heirs of Romantic poetry, and how heavy metal may have nudged the Cold War toward its end at the Moscow Music Peace Festival. If you care about 80s heavy metal, the MTV era, or just love thinking about how songs work under the hood, this episode is for you. Fans of Iron Maiden, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen, Mötley Crüe, Poison, Bon Jovi, Dio, and even Steel Panther's parody universe will hear this music in a new way. And if you're into how culture and politics collide in sound—think the way punk, hip-hop, or grunge carried the anxieties of their eras—you'll find a lot to chew on here too.Episode Highlights0:00 – Intro / Setting the stage How Jesse went from Brooklyn club stages and opening for Danger Danger to a PhD in literature and an 80s tribute band in St. Louis, and why 80s metal still gets written off as “by and for dummies” while Dylan and Kendrick win major literary prizes.5:12 – Are 80s metal lyrics actually literature? Cassette liner notes, goofy rhymes, and serious themes: Jesse breaks down how synecdoche, personification, metaphor, and symbolism show up in songs by Def Leppard, Metallica, and Twisted Sister.12:45 – PMRC, Tipper Gore, and the fight over teenage imagination We revisit the 1985 PMRC hearings, Dee Snider's testimony, and why “Under the Blade” and “Suicide Solution” say more about adult panic than teen corruption.20:30 – Cold War metal: Bon Jovi to Nuclear Assault How videos like Bon Jovi's “Runaway” and songs by Metallica, Ozzy, Megadeth, and Nuclear Assault carried nuclear anxiety, class conflict, and apocalyptic dread beneath all the hairspray.28:10 – Escapism, fantasy, and why Dio matters From Dungeons & Dragons to Iron Maiden and Dio, we explore metal's love of magic, fantasy, and portals as a deeply human response to a world that often felt unlivable.36:40 – MTV, chains, and the magic door We unpack the visual language of 80s metal videos: breaking out of asylums and prisons, falling through mirrors, and what it meant to “escape to the concert” once metal hit the mainstream.45:05 – Outsiders selling millions of records Why metal fans still felt like misfits even as the music dominated MTV, and how that outsider identity overlaps with the way readers and writers see themselves.52:30 – Van Halen, class struggle, and 1984 From “Running with the Devil” and “Jump” to “Hot for Teacher,” we look at David Lee Roth's working-class storytelling, school-as-prison imagery, and the eerie resonance of naming an album 1984 in the synth-drenched futureshock of the mid-80s.1:01:10 – Cowboys, Road Warriors, and the end of the world How metal videos borrowed from Escape from New York, The Road Warrior, and cowboy mythology to build a visual language of lawless survival and American ruggedness.1:09:45 – W.A.S.P., Nine Inch Nails, and moving the line What it means that W.A.S.P.'s “Animal (F*** Like a Beast)” got pulled from shelves while “Closer” became a critical darling, and how censorship lines shifted from the 80s to the 90s.1:18:20 – White Lion, Living Colour, and the politics hiding in band names We get into White Lion's unexpected political conscience, the uncomfortable optics of Pride, and how Living Colour wore their politics more explicitly.1:25:40 – How to listen differently after Rock of Pages Jesse explains how he hopes readers (and listeners) revisit 80s metal: with streaming open, videos queued up, and an ear tuned to metaphor, context, and the way these songs helped kids survive their era.1:33:50 – What's next and where to find the book Jesse hints at possible 90s projects and shares where to find Rock of Pages through Bloomsbury, indie bookstores, and the usual suspects. If this conversation makes you want to pull your old cassettes out of the box (or at least re-open your 80s metal playlist), don't stop here.Dive into the full archive of 70s & 80s metal episodes, history-of-the-band deep dives, and mixtapes at digmeoutpodcast.com.Join the DMO Union for bonus episodes, new release reviews, polls, and our private Discord community at dmounion.com.Subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with the friend who still swears 80s metal was “just for fun.” Let's prove, once and for all, that the music that raised us was doing a lot more than just partying. Mike said he was sick for this one. I don't know. He didn't seem sick to me. He seemed suspiciously at the top of his game. And thank goodness for that. Because we needed all his powers for this episode – one full of fun, mirth, and madness! And some Kickstarters as well. To wit: a doctor trying to become a content creator, our favorite Kitchen Idiots, a watch that doesn't work, and more. Oh and just as a cautionary note, I'd tell you to watch out for Mike coughing and sneezing a lot on this episode, but he didn't do it at all. So. Make of that what you will. Nia Hill is an accomplished actress, entertainment executive, producer, and master of reinvention. Like many of us, her earliest attempts at reinvention happened after she started a new school in LA. She was immediately introduced to a new set of beauty and style expectations that were different from what was allowed at her prim and mandatory-uniform Catholic School. Growing up traveling between parents and cities, Los Angeles and Atlanta, provided her with the foundation to assess and adapt to new surroundings quickly. While her mother was stricter in how she allowed Nia to self-express, her father, a well-known comedy agent, was more lenient. Her early exposure to the entertainment business, coupled with music video inspiration on BET, Nia quickly carved out her own path personally and professionally.During our conversation, Nia shared that while she studied acting in college, her father dissuaded her from pursuing a career in acting. The Harlem Renaissance inspired her to move to New York during the early 2000s. After interning at the famous Apollo Theater, she embarked on a career as an executive and landed roles at Comedy Central, The Chappelle Show, and even MTV. Despite a successful career and blossoming relationship with her now-husband, Bill Burr, she was unfulfilled. She transitioned to a full-time stay-at-home mother, but still felt called towards creative work. Nia decided to invest fully in herself and her interests, only to find that she was the career of her dreams. Her current role, as a purveyor of the best in Black fine dining, is created in her image; truly original, funny, and endlessly entertaining. Maggie Doyne is co-founder of the BlinkNow Foundation and Kopila Valley Children's Home and School in Surkhet, Nepal. At age nineteen, she used her babysitting money and worked with the local community to build a home for orphaned children in war-torn Nepal. In 2010, she and her team opened a school for five hundred of the region's most impoverished children. Throughout the past decade, BlinkNow and Kopila have worked to deepen and grow the organization through grassroots community development efforts. Her work has been championed by Pulitzer Prize–winning columnist Nicholas Kristof and the Dalai Lama, among others. The story of BlinkNow's beginnings has been featured on the Huffington Post, VH1, MTV, and DoSomething.org. Maggie was named Glamour magazine's Woman of the Year and was used as an example for her groundbreaking work at the Forbes 400 Summit on Philanthropy. In 2015, she was named CNN Hero of the Year. Maggie's story carries a message of hope, love, and the possibility of how the smallest individual acts can spark huge world change. She believes that poverty, hunger, and violence will be alleviated when children are provided with their most basic needs and human rights—a loving, happy childhood, nutrition, and a quality education. She believes that this can be achieved during her lifetime.
