THE SPLENDID BOHEMIANS PRESENT "DOUBLE TROUBLE" - GIVING LOVE ONE MORE CHANCE - WITH TRACY CHAPMAN AND SIPPIE WALLACE. DOUBLE DOWN!

Today we feature two black female vocalists, born 66 years apart, both renown for their independent spirit, singing songs about trying to make love work -  despite clear signs to the contrary. As artists, they've both shunned the spotlight, maintaining the mystery of their magic: Sippie Wallace quit show business for 30 years, preferring to express herself through her church organ, and LGBTQ icon Tracy Chapman staunchly separates her private life from her public one. Sippie returned to the spotlight by way of the blues festivals of the 60s, and was celebrated and covered by Bonnie Raitt, among others, and although Tracy appears regularly to perform for political causes she champions, only recently did she resurface in a big way in the mind the general public, by way of an emotional re-appearance at the 2023 Grammy's to perform her song “Fast Car” in a duet with Luke Combs, who made it a Country hit almost 40 years after its original release. SIPPIE WALLACEOn this 1926 Okeh recording of “Special Delivery Blues”, we first hear the whistle of the approaching mail train, then the crescendoing piano rolls building up suspense musically. This wave of energy is capped by the immortal cornet of Louis Armstrong and the yearning phrases of Sippie Wallace begging for news of her man's return. She wishes and hopes that the guy who left her will come back soon, but it doesn't look good. Despite this, Sippie makes it clear she'll keep up the vigil as long as it takes.“The Texas Nightingale” built up her reputation playing tent shows, and releasing a spate of recordings that put her up there with Ma Rainy and Bessie Smith, but she decided to chuck it all and dedicate her musical talents to the Church, where she played organ for 30 plus years. During the folk/blues revival of the mid-1960s, she was rediscovered and enjoyed immense appreciation for another 20 years, until her death at age 88. TRACY CHAPMANI love GIVE ME ONE REASON because it's so simple and direct. Tracy is drawing a line: “I'm telling you that I love you, but you have to reciprocate, or I'm gone”. It's clearly stated without equivocation, but as the verses add up, you can just picture her, standing in the doorframe, giving her object of desire just one more chance, then another, then another…. Drawing one line, then moving it back a bit. She doesn't want to go, but it looks like she's going to have to.Tracy Chapman catapulted out of the Boston coffeehouse scene in 1986, 25 years after Joan Baez had accomplished the same feat, and her first single, “Fast Car,” a song which alluded to economic inequality, was ubiquitous - a definite anomaly during the MTV era, which shows that the public can respond to bare-boned honesty, (without bells and whistles), when they hear it.  And, she has maintained her integrity as a socially conscious artist throughout the intervening decades.

The Wolf has had a complicated relationship with The Black Crowes. As a young man, he felt the music industry had conspired to anoint the Crowes as the next big thing in rock. MTV, rock radio, Rolling Stone, etc all seemed to be on the Crowes bandwagon and were shoving them down our throats (or that's what it seemed like). The fact that their first single was a cover and Chris Robinson's cocky attitude just didn't jibe with what our host was looking for in the early 90s. However, after seeing them open for the Grateful Dead in 1995, he bore witness to what a great live band they were. So while he still may have had issues with their front man and his attitude, the fact of the matter were they were the real deal live. But when his idol Jimmy Page joined the Crowes for a tour and eventually released a live album with them, again he was despondent that his biggest guitar hero had taken up with this band he didn't love. BTW - the newly released deluxe edition of them Live at the Greek is a killer Crowes or Zeppelin collectible. in 2024, Aerosmith was supposed to do one final tour and the Black Crowes were slated to open for them. When Aerosmith was forced to cancel the tour, The Wolf found himself more disappointed in missing the Crowes than the last gasp of Aerosmith. So when the Black Crowes came to town as a headliner, The Wolf wasn't going to miss his chance and he wasn't disappointed. Hear him discuss with Action Jackson the band, their show, the power of Chris Robinson's voice, the guitar porn, the stuff he didn't know and the Rolling Stones cover that he wasn't expecting. A great live show and we're happy to share it with some soundbites for your listening pleasure! The New Orleans rock band Zebra has always existed out of time. Despite having one of the fastest selling debuts in Atlantic Records' history, Zebra never really fit in with the glammed up ‘80s metal bands they were being lumped in with on the pages and airwaves of Hit Parader and MTV. But that apparent inability to fit in may be exactly what endeared them to hordes of avid listeners who would wear out their bare bones cassette of ZEBRA and eventually go to Kmart and stealthily rip open a vinyl copy of the record to steal the lyric sheet so he could figure out what Randy Jackson was singing. Okay. We may be talking about Scott here. ANYWAY — this week we're thrilled to welcome Mr. Jackson to the podcast to talk about the 50th anniversary of Zebra, recording with Jack Douglas, being a rock band in New Orleans, being a rock band in Long Island, befriending Twisted Sister, touring with Cheap Trick, seeing The Beatles live, being forced to talk about Bon Jovi, and the lyrical prowess of the Moody Blues. And more black beans.

Eliminator wasn't just another album; it was a cultural moment. Packed with hits like “Gimme All Your Lovin',” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and “Legs,” the record turned the bearded bluesmen into MTV icons, thanks to a series of unforgettable music videos starring hot rods, cool girls, and cooler riffs. In this episode, we'll explore how producer Bill Ham and the band blended boogie-blues with New Wave gloss, the surprising role of sequencers and drum machines, and how the Eliminator coupe became as famous as the music itself. Ed Bisch is an activist who founded Relatives Against Purdue Pharma (RAPP) after his son, Eddie, died from an OxyContin overdose in 2001. After Eddie's death, Ed started a website to warn others about the dangers of OxyContin and began connecting with other parents who had lost children to the drug. This led to the formation of RAPP, a group that has been actively protesting and seeking to hold Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family accountable for their role in the opioid crisis. Key details about Ed Bisch and RAPP: Formation: Ed Bisch founded RAPP around 2003 with three other mothers who also lost children to opioids. Anyone who has stood up to Purdue Pharma or spoken out against them is considered a member. Activism: RAPP is known for holding protests and attending hearings, often with photos of their deceased children, to keep pressure on the company and its owners. Ed has also been a claimant in a class-action lawsuit against Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family. Goal: The primary goal of RAPP is for Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family executives to receive jail time for their involvement in the opioid crisis, arguing that financial penalties are not enough of a deterrent. Media Attention: Ed Bisch's activism has been featured in various media, including the MTV series "True Life," the MSNBC special "The Forgotten Epidemic," and articles by authors like Beth Macy ("Dopesick" and "Raising Lazarus"). He has been a consistent voice calling for the Department of Justice to prosecute the Sacklers. Settlement Views: Ed Bisch has been vocal in his criticism of the various settlements reached with the Sackler family, calling them "a bankruptcy scam" and a "sad joke" because the payouts to victims are very small and the Sacklers' fortune remains largely untouched. He also points out that the settlements often include immunity from future civil lawsuits. HELP SUPPORT OUR FIGHT AGAINST ADDICTION. Courtney Bagby Lupinin, CEO and Founder of Little Red Management, is the go-to talent manager for reality TV stars from shows on ABC, CBS, MTV and Netflix including The Bachelor Franchise, Big Brother, Love is Blind, and the Circle. She began her career in the corporate sector at Oracle in San Francisco, managing internal communications and events. A yearning for the celebrity side of influencer marketing led her to Los Angeles where she volunteered her time and built relationships within the reality TV world before taking the leap to launch Little Red Management in 2019 at the age of 25. Courtney has also activated partnerships for huge brands including Disney, FOX, Hallmark, Nike, Adidas, Amazon, and more. “I don't remember who told me this, and I wish I did because I feel like it was the best advice I've ever learned. It was to figure out how you can help those people who you want to work with and bring something to the table for them, but don't expect something back. “At this time I wanted to do side things that would help me meet people and build my resume. One thing I did was volunteer for a nonprofit event called Reality Rally, which is held every year and all the reality TV stars come to that event to support their cause. I tweeted some of the stars from Survivor, Big Brother and other reality TV shows and volunteered to manage their social media in the off-season. And people accepted. That was super helpful because then when the event came along, I could meet them in person and they knew who I was. “Another thing I did was to go after a contestant on The Bachelor who I really wanted as a client. I would tweet at her every time I was in L.A. and ask her to get brunch with me. She would always respond, telling me that she couldn't do it–but she would still respond. One time I left her a message to meet me at The Grove that day, which is a fancy mall in L.A. She didn't respond to that, but I ended up running into her there that afternoon. She totally knew who I was from the emails and tweets I had sent her. We sat down together and I asked her all sorts of questions. “I had tried to reach out to some talent agencies and even social media agencies at the time, but no one would respond to me. So, it turned out for me that my best way of learning was from the talent themselves! “Nowadays I own my own talent management business, and I always respond to anyone who wants career advice and tips on how to get into the business because I know what it is like to be so hungry for industry information.”

Queensryche were always different from their hard rock & hair metal brethren in the 80s & 90s. Based out of Seattle, Geoff Tate (vocals), Chris DeGarmo (lead guitar), Michael Wilton (lead & rhythm guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) created a more prog rock sound akin to that of Rush or Dream Theater. Tate's soaring vocals against the brilliant guitar work and fiesty rhythm section gave them a sound all their own in a sea of hair, power chords and the occasional power ballad. After coming off 1988's concept album Operation: Mindcrime, the band were confident and ready to take the next step to superstardom. 1990's Empire is generally referred to as their best effort and was their best seller with more than 3 million in the US alone. Thanks to MTV and rock radio, Queensryche music was in the air in 1990 and 1991 (at least until the fall) thanks to big hit like the title track, Best I Can, Jet City Woman and Another Rainy Night (Without You) and perhaps the greatest hard rock power ballad of all time, Silent Lucidity. That last song topped the mainstream rock charts and landed in the top ten on Billboard. However, thanks to elements at work in their hometown, the party didn't last. Once Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit hit the airwaves in the fall of 1991, hard rock and hair metal would soon be shown the door by record companies looking to capitalize on the new trend. Though 1994's Promised Land went platinum and had some highlights, it was very out of place in the new flannel-clad culture. Eventually, DeGarmo would leave never to return and turmoil would separate Tate from his band in the 21st Century. However, this album stands as a testament to the bands talent and should be remembered as one of the best of the era. In this episode, we trace the gritty, budget-driven rise of reality TV from MTV's The Real World to VH1's chaotic “celebreality” era. You'll hear how networks cut costs by ditching writers, actors, and sets—and how that led to megahits like Flavor of Love, Rock of Love, and Megan Wants a Millionaire. But behind the drama was a dangerous lack of oversight. We unpack the shocking true crime that brought VH1's empire crashing down and forever changed how reality TV is made.

“That which unites us is far greater than what divides us.” The first four words of this sentence are subtitle, and subtext, for “Path of Liberty,” an immersive outdoor photo and media experience on view through fall 2025 at Freedom Plaza on Manhattan's east side. The creative groundwork for this project was a mammoth effort involving an extensive crew both on the road and behind the scenes. In today's podcast, we catch up with two principals of this project's creative team—creative director Daniella Vale and director of photography, Scott Beardslee—to learn more about their daily lives during two months spent traversing the country by van to interview a broad group of everyday Americans. From the founding idea of capturing the diversity of people across America to the curiosity and resilience of the crew when working on the road to the complexities of orchestrating the many sensory elements for an immersive experience in exhibition, our discussion is rich with creative insight. As Daniella shares during our chat, “I always tend to make three films. There's the film I write, the film I shoot, and then, usually, I rearrange everything and make a totally different film in the edit. So, I've gotten pretty accustomed to non-attachment and rolling with things. That's where the magic happens too.” Guests: Daniella Vale & Scott Beardslee   Episode Timeline: 3:28: The inspiration behind Path of Liberty and Daniella's role as creative lead. 6:59: Daniella and Scott's respective backgrounds in photography and film, plus being curious and distinctions between finding the moment vs creating the moment. 12:02: Daniella and Scott's first introduction in the New York film world. 15:14: Building the crew for Path of Liberty and the challenges of traveling and conducting interviews on the road. 21:35: Daniella describes the three films she makes in the process of writing, shooting, and editing, plus the importance of learning to adapt on the fly. 26:54: Memorable stories from the Path of Liberty road trip. 30:56: Episode Break 31:30: We all want to be happy, but there's a difference between freedom and taking advantage of freedom 34:42: Daniella discusses her time in Japan, and the cultural contrast between American individualism and societies that put the group over the individual self. 41:00: The gear Daniella and Scott traveled with and how it affected the project. 47:59: The interview process with portrait subjects, plus making natural portraits in the moment. 58:32: The Path of Liberty installation in midtown Manhattan, the pride of subjects gathered from across the America, plus the complexities of the post-production process 1:05:39: The immersive aspects of the installation—from the sound design of the audio to the visual continuity between the photographs and the on-site terrain. 1:14:19: Scott and Daniella offer career advice for developing as a creative—leave room for being curious.   Guest Bios: Daniella Vale is a New York City-based photographer, film director, and producer. Her creative passions began early, influenced by her uncles in Pittsburgh's avant-garde film movement. While attending university in Tokyo, Daniella worked on photography and documentary projects. She later moved to Bollywood, where she collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment and Cannes-winning director Manish Jha. In New York, Daniella has worked for brands such as VICE, MTV, Google, and Prada, and with talent such as Alicia Keys, Deepak Chopra, and Lucy Liu. Her portfolio includes work in fashion, branded content, docu-series, and narrative films across various global locations. Career highlights include participating in the 2018 Cannes Film Festival Short Film Corner and being featured in Allure magazine for her directing work. And of course, most recently, Daniella headed up the creative team for the immersive outdoor installation, Path of Liberty: That Which Unites Us, which we're here to talk about today. Scott Beardslee began his career in photography, working as a 1st and 2nd assistant. Yet his passion for narrative filmmaking soon inspired him to take a different career route, focusing on shooting films, commercials, and music videos. Upon graduation from San Francisco State University with a film theory and production degree, he pursued cinematography and later attended graduate school at The American Film Institute in Hollywood. Before he became serious about filmmaking himself, Scott worked as a gaffer for many established A.S.C. cinematographers. Currently, Scott is a Director of Photography in the Union Local 600, working on commercials, music videos, and television.   Stay Connected: Path of Liberty Website Instagram Daniella Vale Website Instagram Youtube Vimeo   Scott Beardslee Website Instagram Vimeo Tiktok   Host: Derek Fahsbender Senior Creative Producer: Jill Waterman Senior Technical Producer: Mike Weinstein Executive Producer: Richard Stevens
