Smash the Patriarchy with Rage and Risk: Lessons from Mona Eltahawy

If you're still waiting for someone to save democracy, Mona Eltahawy has news for you: you are the one you've been waiting for. A fearless Egyptian-American journalist and author of The Seven Necessary Sins for Women and Girls and her latest book Bloody Hell!: Adventures in Menopause From Around the World, Eltahawy is no stranger to authoritarianism. While covering Arab Spring protests in Cairo, she was seized by Egyptian security forces and sexually assaulted and beaten, her arm and hand broken. Now, she warns, America is slipping toward the same strongman rule in Egypt. And too many are sleepwalking through it. Eltahawy's prescription is feminism that terrifies, carried out by both women and men. Because anyone can be a feminist. This is feminism as revolution. As she puts it, “There is no revolution without rage, and there is no revolution without risk.” Her work urges women to embrace power, ambition, anger, and militant self-defense, not to provoke, but to defend. And for their allies to support them. Learn to protect yourself. Teach your daughters common-sense self-defense and how to take up space. Her hope is that more of us, especially white women in the U.S., will stop cosplaying resistance and start embodying it. “The Handmaid's Tale is not a documentary,” she says. “Get out of the TV and into the streets.” EVENTS AT GASLIT NATION: August 25 4pm ET – Join the Gaslit Nation Book Club for a powerful discussion on The Lives of Others and I'm Still Here, two films that explore how art and love endure and resist in the face of dictatorship. M.N. Lee shares her first novel, Proof of Origin, which we think belongs on bookshelves right next to Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale for near future speculative literature. It follows three main perspectives from a Vietnamese politician, the caucasian wife of a conservative politician, and a mixed-race couple that faces deportation and a new life back in Vietnam together. The prose is compelling, her character building flawless, and the emotional content poignant as they each thread their way through a world of citizenship evaluation and unintended consequences. … Continue...Episode 220 – Interview with M.N. The question this time? A deceptively simple one that sparks deep reflection, passionate debate, and hilarious tangents: What's the difference between a show you recommend because it's important, and one you recommend just because you love it?From The Wire's prophetic breakdown of American institutions to the chaotic brilliance of The Rehearsal, the crew dives into what makes TV truly unforgettable. Krystina champions The Pit and Handmaid's Tale for their emotional impact and social relevance, while KT defends Community and The Rehearsal. Why Ignatian Spirituality is a Green Spirituality with Sr. Margaret Scott

AMDG: A Jesuit Podcast

In honor of the Feast of St. Ignatius of Loyola on July 31, we're taking a green look at his Spiritual Exercises. When today's host, Eric Clayton, was in college, he stumbled upon a book entitled “The Eucharist and Social Justice.” It's a small volume and was easily tucked into his bag when he went to Nicaragua on a service immersion trip. He remembers paging through that book with an excitement that rarely appeared when reading other theology texts. But something about this one, this invitation to consider how the source and summit of our Catholic faith was in fact a radical call to justice — that was formative. It's what he was looking for as an undergraduate who was very much searching for answers when it came to faith and God and the church. The author of that little book is Sr. Margaret Scott. She's a Handmaid of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a renowned spiritual director and retreat giver. She's fluent in numerous languages, which has led her into ministries that have taken her around the world. She has a lived experience of the universal church and the needs and joys of God's people in many, many places. She has brought those insights into the classroom; she taught theology at Philly's own Jesuit university, St. Joe's. But most importantly for today, she's brought that same global perspective, that tender pastoral care, to a new book all about Ignatian spirituality and ecological conversion. It's called “Ignatius Was Green: Ecological Dimensions of the Spiritual Exercises” and it's available now from Paulist Press. Like “The Eucharist and Social Justice,” this is a small, approachable volume. And for those of us engaged in the ministry of the Exercises, it's quite helpful. Sr. Margaret invites us to deepen our own encounter with Christ through the Exercises by paying careful attention to those places in Ignatius' text that invite deeper ecological reflection. Hi Loyal Readers. Thank you for opening this week's issue of Article Club.Today's issue is dedicated to my interview with Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author of this month's featured article, “The End of Children.” I hope you read the article and take a listen to the interview.Yes: This article is about the imminent worldwide population implosion — in other words, how by the end of this century, we're going to start losing people, and fast, and how the human race might inevitably go extinct sooner rather than later. And yes: I was surprised when I found myself interested in this topic. After all, before reading this piece, I would have said two things: (1) Um, isn't climate change what we should be worrying about? and (2) Doesn't this inexorably lead to “childless cat ladies” and The Handmaid's Tale? But let me tell you: The magic of Mr. Lewis-Kraus's writing and reporting, alongside the spirit of Article Club — which encourages us to build our empathy — got me to rethink my perspective on the plummeting human fertility rate. And this was all before getting to talk to the author himself. As you know, one of my favorite things about Article Club is that writers generously say yes to talking with us. The same was true with Mr. Lewis-Kraus. Here's a photo of him, so you know what he looks like, and then I'll write a bit about what I appreciated about our interview. It was wonderful to meet Mr. Lewis-Kraus. More than what's typical in these Article Club interviews, we talked about writing and craft. A significant part of our conversation was about how he structured and organized the piece. His thoughtfulness was apparent right from the beginning of our conversation. I loved learning how he decided to write the story in the first place and why he chose South Korea as his case study of population collapse. Some people told Mr. Lewis-Kraus that South Korea and its 0.7 fertility rate was “played out” and “a cliché,” but nobody from a major magazine had spent time in the country, he said. I was personally grateful that Mr. Lewis-Kraus took significant space in his article reporting from South Korea. If you want to gain a better appreciation of how serious the problem is there, I encourage you to watch this 15-minute video, recommended by loyal reader Peter.I was also impressed with Mr. Lewis-Kraus's awareness of his readers as he drafted the piece. He understood, for example, that his audience (aka subscribers of The New Yorker) are astute readers who mostly lean progressive and who may believe that population decline is a problem only in some countries, like Italy and Japan. Rather than skirting this issue, Mr. Lewis-Kraus decided to tackle it head on:What I realized was, Everyone is going to feel like they've read this story before — like, everyone is going to feel like they've heard this. And so the major thing that I need to do upfront is say to people, essentially directly address the reader, and say, like, You sophisticated reader might think that you know what's going on here, but you don't know what's going on here.Later in our conversation, I asked Mr. Lewis-Kraus how he makes sure not to get ahead of his readers — on the one hand respecting their knowledge, but on the other hand acknowledging that they haven't spent hundreds of hours reporting and thinking about this issue, as he has. I found his answer to be humble. Part of what, what doing this job is, is it's starting knowing nothing about something and then very quickly learning as much as you can — without forgetting what it felt like to know nothing about it.More than anything else, I left this conversation with deep respect of Mr. Lewis-Kraus and his process as a writer. As I've said many times over the years, while I can recognize the highest-quality writing when I read it, I still don't understand how writers are able to pull it off. That's maybe one reason I keep doing this newsletter — so that I can continue to explore this question and share my findings with you. Thank you very much for joining me on this journey. An invitation to our discussion on July 27I warmly invite you to participate in our discussion on Sunday, July 27, 2:00 - 3:30 pm PT. We'll meet on Zoom. You can sign up below, it's free.Thank you for reading and listening to this week's issue. Hope you liked it.

Margaret Atwood is a living legend. The Canadian author and poet has written over 50 books and has been published in more than 45 countries. Her 1985 classic "The Handmaid's Tale" garnered acclaim and alarm, predicting a dystopian future in which women had no rights. Now in her 80s, she  released her new book, "Old Babes in the Wood," a collection of 15 short stories. Jenna Bush Hager visited Atwood's alma mater, the University of Toronto, where the two sat down to discuss her childhood, career and upcoming memoir.

Bradley Whitford Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson It was a sweet reunion when 3 x Emmy-winner Bradley Whitford of The West Wing was surprised and serenaded by composer Snuffy Walden, with the show's Emmy-winning theme. They share quite a bit of history, having also done Sorkin's Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Last night Snuff and I binged the pilot episodes of both shows and were astounded by how timely they still are. Bradley and I discussed his storyline in that first West Wing, which could've been ripped out of today's headlines. We also talked about Studio 60 and the irony of Danny Trip's confession to Matt Albie, played by Matthew Perry, about his drug slip. Bradley's emotional remembrance of the show, its cast, and specifically Matthew's comedic brilliance, and the pocket of sobriety for Matt that allowed for some of his best work. Bradley ain't no Hollywood fluffernutter. Of progressive Quaker stock, his father, who worked at an insurance company, was the local president of Planned Parenthood before it was political, his mother was an outspoken advocate, and his brother, a conscientious objector. Talk about an unusual childhood, he has an 85-year-old sister. Bradley came from a loving, functional home, and still became an actor. Now that's an anomaly right there. We did a deep dive into the state of the union. Thoughtful, passionate, and in solution, Bradley puts his activism where his mouth is. We talked Trump, Musk, Kennedy, gender affirming care, Biden, Kamala, Hillary, Iran, immigration, how art will not save us, only politics will. And yet much of Bradley's art is political. We spoke about The Handmaid's Tale from innumerable angles. For me, arguably perhaps the greatest show ever on television, and his Commander Lawrence, is probably the most layered, complex character he's portrayed. We talked about Elisabeth and their earlier connection in The West Wing, Anne Dowd, and how her spectacular performance inspired Margaret Atwood's writing, The Testaments, for her. Bradley was far more interested in talking about current affairs and how essential it is that we do more than talk than he was in talking about his work. But we did squeeze in some time to discuss For Worse, the indie feature his bride, Amy Landecker, wrote, directed, and stars in alongside Bradley. His respect, love, and admiration to Amy are adorable to behold. Making the festival circuit and winning awards along the way, I can't wait to see the film loosely based on their romance. I'm a fan. A great, big avid Bradley Whitford fan. The last time we met, it was at a big Hollywood soiree. He was equally as open, personable, unaffected, opinionated, and accessible as he was this day. As much as I adore his work, I'm grateful as hell for his humanity and advocacy. I hope to consider “What would Bradley do” a whole lot more moving forward. And speaking of hope, he has it in abundance… mix that with some fun, his learned recipe's secret sauce, and there's good reason to trust that there are better days ahead. It's up to us, all of us, to make it so. This should be essential viewing for anyone in fear and despair. It's the end of everything! Welcome back to Part 2 of our season finale featuring Dr. Charles Liu, co-host Allen Liu, and our guest archaeology expert and author, Hannah Liu, MEd. (If you haven't caught up to Part 1, we highly recommend you do before embarking on the next leg of this journey! Listen here or wherever you get your podcasts!) We pick right up where we left off, with the next question from our audience. Daniela asks, “If a black hole hits the Sun, will Earth be destroyed?” Chuck explains a few ways a black hole can mess with our day, including the fact that long before any actual collision took place, the Sun would start shedding material that would destroy us. He compares that unlikely event to the actual example of cosmic destruction we're watching in NGC 4676 – aka “The Mice” – which are two galaxies swirling together in a death spiral playing out over hundreds of millions of years. Naturally, this leads Chuck to ponder what happens when civilizations fall apart here on Earth, and Hannah brings up the collapse of the Roman Empire. As she explains, “the fall of Rome happened a lot of times, and also, no time.” From 44 BCE and the assassination of Julius Caesar, to the 476 invasion and conquest of Rome by the Germanic tribes denoted by Edward Gibbon in The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, to the fact ever since nations have claimed to be the descendants or inheritors of Rome. Chuck points out the influence of Gibbon's book on Isaac Asimov's “Foundation” series, followed by a very quick romp through “Decline and Fall of America” literature including The Handmaid's Tale, A Canticle for Liebowitz, Man in the High Castle, and the zombie apocalypse tour de force, World War Z. Then it's time for another question from the audience: Michael says, “I heard that scientists brought back a dire wolf. Could they bring back dinosaurs or animals that could destroy us all?” It turns out, these resurrected animals are just gray wolves that have been engineered to have some characteristics of the extinct predator. It's still a pretty impressive feat, though, and you'll hear how they collected bits and pieces of dire wolf DNA to “resurrect them.” Allen also brings up similar modification experiments they're doing on chickens to make them more dinosaur-like. Allen points out that bioengineered germs are far more likely to cause our destruction than resurrected dinosaurs, regardless of the world envisioned in the Jurassic Park franchise. And speaking of Michael Crichton, Chuck gives us a breakdown of his sci-fi classic, The Andromeda Strain, about bacteria from space that cause a biological outbreak here on Earth. Hannah points out that historically, some of the biggest killers of human beings have been plagues. She gives us a guided tour of the bubonic plagues, from the Black Death, which may have wiped out as much as 60% of the population of Europe, to the Plague of Justinian a thousand years earlier that killed as many as 100 million people, while also name dropping the Antonine Plague and the Spanish Flu!) And that's it Season 4 of The LIUniverse. Stay tuned for Season 5 after the summer. If you want to find out more about what Hannah's impending book, check out the Mixed Identity Project  We hope you enjoy this episode, and this season, of The LIUniverse. I once believed that the worst thing that could happen to this country was to have a Conservative Supreme Court. That was supposed to be the end of everything. I would scream those words into the abyss all through 2016 to anyone who didn't want to vote for Hillary Clinton, “THE SUPREME COURT.”I grew up on the Left, after all, and nothing scared us more than Christianity in our schools, in our corporations, institutions, and in our courts. If Trump won, he would appoint Conservative Christians to the highest court in the land, and that would be the end of Roe v. Wade, the end of the feminist movement, and women's rights.Well, it turns out, we didn't need Conservative Christians to do that. The Left did it all on their own, leaving just one right in place, the right to terminate a pregnancy, or, if you prefer, kill our babies. We use soft language like “choice” and “terminate” as though that changes the reality. Now that the Left has been assured that the pace of abortion did not slow down and women can use abortion like reproductive bulimia - have fun now, deal with the problem later - they've moved on to more pressing matters.I don't think abortion should be illegal. But you know what should be? “Gender-affirming care” for minors. That is the most grotesque example of soft language ever invented by my former side. Call it what it is - sterilization. Top surgery is a double mastectomy. Bottom surgery is castration. In all the ways I feared religion and Christianity infiltrating our schools and institutions has now been left in the dust by a dangerous, fanatical, unstoppable cult that has left too many young men and women destroyed and mutilated in its wake. What a fool I was. Now, I am so grateful for Conservative Christians. I'm so grateful to Donald Trump, who put them on the court. I am glad we lost, even if I didn't know that in 2016. Now I do. Now I can see.Because Hillary Clinton lost, we did not get control of the court. And thank God for that. Because if we had, there is no way the bill from Tennessee to ban “gender affirming care” would have been upheld.Like everyone else on my former side, I was convinced Trump's win in 2016 would end everything we held dear, especially the Supreme Court. We'd been fighting with the Right for years to get control of it. We watched Merrick Garland's appointment obstructed, and we fumed. After Trump won, we became an unhinged, hysterical, angry mob of women who felt it was our right to convict Justice Kavanaugh of rape in the court of public opinion. And to demonize and depict Amy Coney Barrett as the Handmaid. But what I know now that I did not know back in 2016 was that when a society excuses and allows for the young to be sterilized, that's when the bottom drops out, whether it's Eugenics or “gender affirming care.” I didn't see the problem. I was comfortable with the soft language of the Left. We were the good people standing up for marginalized groups. It took me years to realize just how insane the Left had become. But it's one thing if it's just about cancel culture, destroying Hollywood, comedy, art, and book publishing. It's a whole other thing if we're allowing irreversible harm to be done to the minds and bodies of children. But thankfully, God invented Conservatives and they rose to do what we could not, just as they did back before the Civil War to end slavery and for the same reason — they believed it was morally wrong. Now, they are back to stop the Democrats from doing something morally wrong. It's the Christian Right yet again that is on the right side of history.I'm not a religious person, though I wish I could be. I imagine there is relief in that connection to something more powerful than yourself, and maybe that is what so many of these young people need, not “gender-affirming care.” This de-transitioner realized she was made in God's image, which helped her find her way out.I always believed religion was dangerous and destructive. But whatever I thought about religion, and whatever the Left thinks about it now, it can't touch what madness has been manifested by the Left. Look at what they've done.Christianity, we all believed, was the source of bigotry against gays and lesbians. We wanted no part of that. I still don't. But today, I am grateful that they have been fighting this fight because I do not think we could have done it without them.Matt Walsh has been relentless. He's not only reported on the horrors of “gender-affirming care” on his show but also appeared in town halls and government, and helped push the fight in Tennessee to ban the practice. He deserves much credit today. It's ironic, isn't it, that it has been left up to many Conservative Christians to state biological reality. Growing up, I was on that side, and they weren't. Now, the Left has pulled so far into madness that the Conservative Christians are the more pragmatic side. They lock arms with independent thinkers who function as the sane middle, like Colin Wright, Andrew Doyle, Gays Against Groomers, Christina Buttons, and Peter Boghossian:The forces that oppose them are powerful, as this statement by the American Psychological Association shows. But the resistance forces are stronger. The Democrats are collectively too stupid to understand that this is not the hill to die on.The Climate of Fear This is a public episode. A good rule of thumb is that whatever Margaret Atwood is worried about now, the rest of us will likely be worried about a decade from now. The rise of authoritarianism. A backlash against women's social progress. Climate change leading to social unrest. Advertising permeating more and more of our lives. We originally released this episode back in March 2022. But just like Atwood's work, it somehow only got more relevant with time. Atwood is the author of at least 17 novels, including the classic “The Handmaid's Tale,” as well as 20 books of poetry and nine collections of short fiction. When we spoke, she'd just published an essay collection, “Burning Questions.” And she has a new book coming out this fall, “Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts.”Mentioned:Art & Energy by Barry LordBook recommendations:War by Margaret MacMillanBiased by Jennifer L.
