When a tow truck driver's head gets run over during a routine repossession, it highlights the extreme dangers towing professionals face daily. Our latest episode dives into this shocking incident and several other headline-grabbing stories affecting the towing community nationwide. We examine the case of an Alabama ex-officer charged with murder after a fatal shooting during a truck repossession, a Montana towing company suing after being permanently removed from a police rotation list, and a predatory tower now serving house arrest after charging victims up to $11,000 per tow. These stories illustrate both the challenges and accountability within our industry. The heart of our episode features an exclusive interview with Perry Beatty, founder of Hazmat Responder Network. Perry shares his remarkable journey from becoming proficient in light-duty recovery at just 14 years old to developing specialized expertise in hazardous material response. His insights reveal a lucrative opportunity many towing companies overlook: HAZWOPER certification to handle spill cleanup at accident scenes."Don't leave money on the table," Beatty advises. "You're already on scene – dominate the scene and handle the entire cleanup." He explains how the 40-hour HAZWOPER certification empowers towing operators to not only recover vehicles but also manage environmental hazards, creating substantial additional revenue streams while providing a valuable service to emergency responders who prefer working with a single service provider.Whether you're looking to expand your towing business offerings or simply stay informed about industry developments, this episode delivers practical knowledge from someone who's built multiple successful operations in the towing and recovery space. Connect with the Hazmat Responder Network at 877-356-9767 or visit hazmatrn.com to learn how you can secure this valuable certification.

As Christians, we live in a fallen world that's constantly drawing us away from God and His design for our lives. The devil's always trying to take us out -- but God's given us the armor to fight back. When we arm ourselves with Scripture and start each day strengthened by His Word, we're better able to resist the schemes and attacks of the enemy.

Richard Ellis Talks on Oneplace.com

As Christians, we live in a fallen world that is drawing us away from God and His design and plan for our lives. Watching the wildfires spread in Los Angeles is both heartbreaking and sobering. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this unspeakable tragedy.  We're also reminded of the bravery and dedication of first responders—firefighters on the ground and pilots flying “super scoopers” to drop water where it's needed most. But behind every heroic effort is another layer of unsung heroes: machinists. Why? Because these life-saving missions rely on precision-made tools and equipment, much of which starts in machine shops like yours.  From winches on fire trucks to the Jaws of Life, defibrillators, oxygen tanks, and components for SWAT and HAZMAT vehicles, machining plays a critical role in emergency response. In this episode, we'll dive into the ways machinists are manufacturing the parts that help keep first responders safe and effective. Hill produces winch parts used across industries, including those found on fire trucks. Motis Fire Rescue is innovating equipment to make firefighters' jobs easier. AC: Local unconfirmed reporting suggests this may be more ethnic in nature, after French police shut down a few well-known drug trafficking operations in the area. However, very few details have been released regarding the identity of the assailants. In Grenoble, similar kinetic actions were reported today following a heist on an armored car in the city center. Assailants reportedly armed with automatic weapons ambushed a cash transit van, before fleeing the scene. AC: Again, very little information has been released regarding this incident, or the status of the investigation. Photos of the burning van have circulated on social media, but the success of the thieves is unknown.-HomeFront-Georgia: Yesterday, one of the governmental officials that was involved with the investigation into the recent BioLab fire in Conyers died unexpectedly during a round of testimony regarding this incident. Rockdale County Soil and Water Conservation Supervisor Kenny Johnson reportedly collapsed in a hallway at the State Capitol after reporting a shortness of breath amid a break in proceedings. He was taken to a local hospital where he later died.Tennessee: This afternoon local authorities in Knoxville have issued an evacuation order for many residents in the vicinity of Mynderse Avenue, due to a potential threat involving explosives. AC: This evacuation zone is centered on a local recycling facility and has a radius of one kilometer, indicating that whatever the threat is, it's very serious and could cause significant damage. Local authorities initially claimed the response was a HAZMAT situation, but the most recent information from the Knoxville PD indicates a box possibly containing explosives was found. The investigation is currently ongoing as EOD personnel attempt to render the possible device safe.Florida: Hurricane Milton made landfall last night as a Category 3 hurricane after rapidly losing strength. The storm narrowly missed Tampa for the most part, mostly making landfall to the south in Sarasota. Roughly 3 million people remain without power throughout western Florida, and somewhat routine flooding has been reported throughout the region.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Though Hurricane Milton thankfully collapsed and lost much strength immediately before making landfall, the initial storm bands that arrived before the hurricane caused significant damage as many tornadoes were spawned yesterday afternoon. Initial reports suggest that well over 100 tornadoes swept through the region, causing more significant damage than the hurricane itself in some cases. This is a good reminder of the expediency of evacuations before the storm arrives; mass damage might occur even before the main body of the storm arrives, so waiting until the last minute to prepare and/or evacuate is often Ill-advised.In Georgia, the fire at the BioLab facility has largely been forgotten in the public eye since it occurred, however the scale of this exceptionally hazardous fire has created a substantial health and environmental concern. As a reminder, for several days the fire was burning underneath the rubble, causing significant problems for firefighters trying to overhaul the fire and prevent re-ignition.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

//The Wire//1830Z September 30, 2024////PRIORITY////BLUF: HURRICANE DAMAGE IN SOUTHEASTERN US CATASTROPHIC. DOCKWORKER UNION STRIKE TO BEGIN TOMORROW, SHUTTING DOWN MOST EAST COAST PORTS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-USA: A nationwide Verizon outage was reported this morning, affecting most of the United States. AC: As cellular communications have been strained due to the increased demand throughout the southeast, localized outages have been reported. The cause of this national outage has not been disclosed however, and is possibly unrelated to storm damage. The widespread telecoms issues throughout the southeast already present an exceptionally vulnerable target for malign actors, both foreign and domestic.Throughout the East Coast, the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) labor union has voted to conduct the first total port strike since 1977, starting Tuesday, October 1. Most high-risk rail freight has already been stopped as of last week, so as to avoid HAZMAT or other lootable materials being stuck on the track due to the labor strike. On the west coast, land-based freight is already overwhelmed as cargo operations shift to trucks, of which there are not enough to mitigate the impacts to freight operations. As such long lines and processing times are being reported around the country at every major logistics hub.AC: The impact that this labor strike will have on logistics will without question be catastrophic due to the devastated American southeast. If this goes forward, the logistical problems already in play will likely result in a near-total breakdown of most cargo operations throughout the eastern United States. East coast ports being shut down, with union members picketing, combined with the apocalyptic damage reported in the southeast, presents a clear and present danger to national security.Southeastern US: Devastation from Hurricane Helene remains at historic levels due to the sheer scale of the disaster. Potentially thousands remain missing, and NCDOT authorities continue to urge everyone to consider all roads in western NC closed until further notice, even interstates or major highways. Asheville is the largest metropolitan center that has suffered severe damage, largely due to all roads into and out of the city being blocked or unnavigable for most vehicles. Looting has also been reported throughout most of the flood damaged regions.Florida: The city of Okeechobee is under a state of defacto martial law as the Chief of Police Donald Hagan signs a Local State of Emergency declaration nullifying the 2nd Amendment. The possession of firearms in public and the sale of ammunition has been completely banned. The display of firearms by gun stores has been banned. AC: As it stands in this municipality, this is appears to be a complete and total ban on the possession of all firearms in public. It is unknown as to if law enforcement officials are enforcing this policy or not.Georgia: A major chlorine processing facility caught fire in Conyers over the weekend. This is one of the most significant factory fires in Georgia's history, with plume analysis indicating hazardous debris being deposited throughout the region. Initial reports from local responders indicate that chlorine has been detected, leading to mass evacuations around the factory and a shelter-in-place order for the entirety of Rockdale county. AC: Details are unconfirmed regarding the origin of the fire. However the internal fire suppression system itself may have exacerbated the situation as chemicals have reacted with the water, resulting in either the fire starting in the first place, or at minimum the blaze being more substantial. Haze and chemical odors have been reported in Atlanta, prompting local authorities to recommend the closing of exterior ventilation systems for structures and vehicles throughout Fulton county.Washington D.C. – The White House

POTENTIAL FOR WAR IN LEBANON CONTINUES TO MOUNT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: This morning Israeli bombing continued in Lebanon, to include the targeting of at least one major residential structure in Beirut. Hezbollah rocket attacks have continued in kind, though more randomly and sporadically. AC: No indications of an Israeli ground offensive occurring yet, though forces continue to stage in the region.-HomeFront-Ohio: A major fire is underway at a scrapyard facility in Columbus. The Columbus Auto Shredding facility on Alum Park Drive caught fire early this morning. Local air quality advisories are in effect due to the HAZMAT concerns from the fire. No word yet on what started the fire.Washington D.C. – In response to the growing concern regarding the lack of substantial increases of security postures in the current threat environment, the US Secret Service director has highlighted the current stance of the USSS. Acting Director Ronald Rowe stated that “We have to be able to have the personnel, the assets, and be able to spread those out for an indefinite period of time in the event that another situation, a geopolitical conflict, or some other tension, requires us to do so”.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Statements by Director Rowe have raised eyebrows considering this is the second time this week his comparatively odd statements on the topic have left citizens wondering what he is insinuating. Many concerns lie with the nature of the “geopolitical conflict” Director Rowe has referred to twice now, and what kind of geopolitical conflict could possibly have anything to do with the US Secret Service. Any event whatsoever that would require the USSS to spread their forces thin would likely be an event of gargantuan significance. As there's nothing to go on but implications and insinuations, this is merely a continuation of indications and warnings of the current threat environment, as tensions continue to mount this election season.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

ISIS militants occupied the facility for a few hours, executing at least three guards. AC: The militants made several varying demands, such as military equipment, money, and a helicopter, however Russian authorities were not willing to negotiate and retook the facility by force. All ISIS militants were either neutralized or arrested. This attack comes a few days after Putin's surprise visit to Chechnya, his first visit to the region in over a decade. This visit served to diplomatically cement the Chechen Republic's role in Russia's future, along with strengthening ties with Ramzan Kadyrov, the current head of the mostly Islamic republic.Norway: Newly-released reporting reveals an act of sabotage that occurred at a critical military installation earlier this year. Local Norwegian media reports that a communications cable at Evenes Air Station was deliberately cut back in April. The investigation of this incident is currently ongoing.-HomeFront-Colorado: This morning two trains collided near Boulder, destroying a rail bridge and causing a minor fuel leak.Canada: Yesterday afternoon the Canadian government intervened to halt the railroad lockout, less than a day after it started. However, even as rail operations are resuming normally, logistical delays are still expected for some cargo.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Critical cargo or any freight cars carrying HAZMAT were halted about a week before the labor strike, so as to not result in this important cargo being stuck on random sidings throughout Canada. One of the first tools you were taught about when you started this job is the basic groundladder.Once you learned how to throw one, it was no big deal, right? The longer the ladder, the more firefighters get to carry it. Except…What if there's not enough people on the fireground to do that? You might be surprised to find that the 24-foot extension ladder can safely be carried and placed by just one firefighter. Now, a lot of understaffed fire departments, especially volunteers, already know this. But if you started at a fully-staffed department, you may not have had to throw a ladder this size alone.Today's guest runs seminars on the use of ground ladders, and this is one of his favorite topics.Kevin Weis started his career in the fire service in 2012 as a volunteer firefighter in Coldwater, Ohio. TRAIN DERAILMENT IN ILLINOIS CAUSES EVACUATIONS.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Middle East: Tensions remain high regarding a potentially impending Israeli invasion of Lebanon. Various world powers continue to express growing concerns, to include the United States. AC: Additionally, maritime watchers have noted the maneuver of various US Navy assets to the region. However, it's not clear as to if these specific movements are routine or more of a diplomatic power projection. However, it is overwhelmingly likely that the preliminary staging of forces throughout the region is occurring to some degree, should a rapid evacuation operation be necessary.Red Sea/HOA: Houthi attacks on commercial shipping continue. Over the past few days, several vessels have reported being targeted by missiles, including one vessel reporting 5x missile strike attempts. So far, all of these targeting attempts appear to be unsuccessful or near-misses.-HomeFront-Illinois: A train derailed in Matteson, causing limited local evacuations due to the leak of at least one car containing LPG. The leak has since been contained, and recovery efforts are ongoing. No other HAZMAT concerns have been identified as a result of this derailment.Kentucky: Yesterday, Rep. Thomas Massie's wife passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. No further details have been released at this time.Washington D.C. – The SCOTUS has overruled a controversial 1984 decision that previously allowed federal agencies to interpret ambiguous laws. AC: This case, Chevron vs. Natural Resources Defense Council (colloquially known as the Chevron doctrine) has been cited as the bedrock of federal agencies being able to “interpret” the technical details of laws, and in many cases (in effect) add to or detract from the legal text as passed by an elected body. Overruling this case (in theory) removes a substantial portion of the bureaucratic authorities granted to federal agencies, meaning that a substantial shift in administrative law is likely to occur as a result of this ruling, to include the more than 18,000 laws that cite the precedent of this case.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Last night, Israeli media reported that the White House has lifted the “soft” hold on the export of Mk 82 bombs to Israel. As a reminder, the White House had hesitated to export these unguided munitions for fear of the potential for civilian casualties in Gaza. As such, this shipment (and other shipments of even larger munitions) had been placed under review until the decision was made to complete the arms transfer. Overnight, various Israeli media outlets (citing confidential sources) claimed that the arms transfer had been approved, and the shipment will be completed after the Israeli operation in Rafah has reached a conclusion. Of course, unverifiable information from historically questionable sources must be taken with a grain of salt, however this may signal a few impending milestones: A potential shifting of logistics to support an operation in the North (which would need the larger munitions), a removal of the last American political hesitance to continue arming Israel with larger (and potentially unguided) munitions, and a potential widening of the conflict throughout the Middle East. Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Get used to acting outside the box.”  This quote attributed to renowned entrepreneur and investor, Tim Ferris describes the thinking behind how today's guest in the Disaster Tough Podcast conducts training for response.  Lee Nelson is the Director of the Ambipart Response Training Center (ARTC) near Pueblo, Colorado. As such, he and his team conduct real-world Hazmat training and exercises involving train derailments, highway emergency response, compressed gas, and transfer specialization, among other things.  Not only do their training exercises replicate disaster scenarios in theory, but also in practice. Their remote facility outside of Pueblo is equipped with train cars, gas containers, and explosives.  The Readiness Lab and other Emergency response professionals will see the benefits of such training firsthand in October during their Emergency Management Response for Dynamic Populations course (DyPop).  During the exercise, Ambipart will use live explosives to replicate a real-world train derailment and HazMat situation. Such extreme measures aim to see how these emergency response professionals respond during such conditions.  In this episode, Lee explains the benefits of such training and how it applies to the real world. He and host John Scardena also preview the upcoming DyPop exercise with Ambipart from October 22-24.  Registration for DyPop 2024 will be opening soon.  Major Endorsements: L3Harris's BeOn PPT App.  Learn more about this amazing product here: www.l3harris.comImpulse: Bleeding Control Kits by professionals for professionals: www.dobermanemg.com/impulse  Doberman Emergency Management Group provides subject matter experts in planning and training: www.dobermanemg.com

Thanks for listening to The Sound: Mystery of Havana Syndrome. You might be interested to know that Nicky Woolf is back with a new investigative podcast – and we think you're going to like it. It's called Fur & Loathing, and this time he's digging into another very different unsolved mystery. In early December 2014 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Rosemont, Illinois, an unusual gathering was taking place: Midwest Furfest, the world's largest convention for a subculture known as Furries. The party was in full swing when attendees suddenly find themselves struggling to breathe. Something terrible has happened: poisonous levels of chlorine gas were sweeping through the hotel corridors. Nineteen people are hospitalized and hundreds are evacuated. Hazmat teams trace the gas to a stairwell, where they find the remains of a chemical bomb. This was an intentional attack. But almost a decade later, the identity of the perpetrator remains a mystery. In Fur and Loathing, Nicky takes on the unsolved case, working closely with Furries to find answers. It's a journey that will bring him face-to-face with the challenges this vibrant, often misunderstood subculture faces – including the far-right extremists looking to wreck the community from within.Listen to the first episode here, or search for Fur & Loathing in your favorite podcast app to discover the whole show. For more information, visit brazen.fm/fur-and-loathing/

We just completed our 2024 insurance renewal last month, so I thought this world be a good time to revisit the subject of insurance. It's been several years since we have taken a serious swing at the topic and high time we do it again. Especially since insurance is in the top 5 expenses for most trucking companies and a little savings on your insurance bill can go a long way towards improving your bottom line. What To Expect From Episode 155 Buying truck insurance is a pretty complicated and sophisticated purchase. The better you understand it, the better product and service you will receive and the better price you will pay. Understanding the players in the truck insurance world is step one in building your insurance knowledge. Craig and I start off the episode talking about the difference between insurance agents/agencies and insurance companies. We also discuss how many agents should you have giving you quotes. I typically recommend that you work with 2-3 agents, because that is usually enough to get you quotes from most, if not all of the major truck insurance companies. It's good to get an early start whether you are getting a quote for the first time or working on a renewal. I recommend you start gathering all the information needed for the agents giving you quotes around 60 days before your renewal. Here is what you will usually need to provide: A completed application, your agent can often take the information over the phone, fill it out and provide you a document to sign. Your equipment list with all your trucks and trailers listed along with their current values. The value you list is critical. Listen to the episode and I explain why. Driver list Loss runs Timing is critical. I recommend you have all the info your agent needs to get a quote to them at least 30 days before your policy expires so you get the quotes back in a timely manner. I also recommend you bind the new policy, that means making the down payment, at least 1 week before your policy ends. That ensures you don't miss out on any loads. About a week before your policy expires some shippers and brokers won't book loads with you because they see your policy is expiring and they want to see you have a new one in place first. How much your policy is going to cost depends on a lot of different factors. It really boils down to risk. We talk about some of the main risk factors that affect your pricing, to include: How long you have been in business How many claims you have had and how much has been paid out in the past Experience of your drivers Equipment values Where your home base is and where your truck(s) travel to Not all insurance policies are equal. Price is an important factor, but you also want to make sure you are getting adequate coverage for the type of operation you run. For example, if you have reefers, make sure you get reefer breakdown coverage. If you are hauling something super expensive, make sure your cargo insurance is high enough. If you haul HAZMAT make sure you have the right coverage at the right limits. A good agent who primarily does truck insurance will be able to help you through all of this. Don't work with an agent just because they are someone you know. If they don't regularly write truck insurance they can get you in a lot of trouble by not providing you the coverage you need.
