Alec Gillis stops by to have a heartfelt conversation about his fatherhood journey. He and I have an honest conversation about the influence his dad had on him to make his own choice on how to be a dad. He shares the life lessons he learned from his four daughters. After that we blend family and his career by talking about working with his daughter, Camille. We go into his fantastic career in the film industry and how his craft has evolved over the years. Lastly, we finish the interview with the Fatherhood Quick Five. About Alec Gillis Alec Gillis grew up in Orange County, California within sight of the Disneyland fireworks show. As a kid he roamed the mean streets of Main Street Disneyland, sometimes summering on Tom Sawyer's Island. It was here he gained a lifelong appreciation of animatronics, but it was in the local movie theaters that he fell in love with genre films. At age 20 Gillis began working for Roger Corman on a film called Battle Beyond The Stars. This was along with James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd. It wasn't long before Alec dropped out of UCLA Film School in favor of the education Corman offered. Gillis was recommended by James Cameron to Stan Winston, where Gillis worked on effects for classic films such as Aliens and Predator. In 1988 he co-founded Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (ADI) with Tom Woodruff, Jr. Tremors was the company's first feature, and the film's giant subterranean worms gained notoriety for Gillis. As of 2022, Gillis is now a solo Creature FX Designer, founding his new company, Studio Gillis. His mission is to continue the tradition of creating high quality practical characters and to promote the art of Practical FX. To that end, his production company, Pro Machina, produces modest budget genre films as well as creating miniature effects for films such as Alien: Romulus. Make sure you follow Alec on Instagram at @alec_gillis. Plus go to studiogillis.com to learn more about Alec and his work. Pandora beckons once more, guys. Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa are back on the show today, spilling secrets from their screenplay for the recent third film in the Avatar franchise, Fire & Ash. The husband-wife duo came on the show around the release of Avatar: The Way of Water a couple of years back, and it's always a good time chatting with them – I love the unapologetic earnestness of their storytelling and the habit they have of taking huge, billion dollar IP and using them as vehicles for stories about the wonder of nature and what we risk by not showing our environment the appropriate care.Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes. Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. Jurassic World. These are huge-scale blockbuster spectacles that, in an era of franchise films drenched in irony and a certain cynicism, make these very sincere pleas to appreciate animals. To revere and protect nature. Because to lose it or underestimate it leads to chaos and collapse. Fire & Ash is another film to bear that signature of theirs – and it's an epic of mythic proportions. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, we break down the intricacies of this latest collaboration with director James Cameron. They tell me about the moment in which a character very viscerally contemplates suicide, in a scene I was really surprised to see in a Disney tentpole movie. They tell me about the conversations that led to the heartbreaking moment in which Sam Worthington's Jake Sully agonises over whether to do the unthinkable to save his Na'vi tribe. And we also get into the ending of the movie and what exactly is happening as series antagonist Colonel Quaritch, played by Stephen Lang, throws himself to his apparent demise. In this Terminator 2: Judgment Day Review, the Born to Watch crew dives headfirst into what many consider the greatest sequel ever made. James Cameron didn't just follow up the original Terminator… he reinvented the blockbuster. Released in 1991, Terminator 2: Judgment Day changed action movies forever with groundbreaking visual effects, unforgettable characters, and one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's most iconic roles. This week the full team is back, and the discussion kicks off with a simple but loaded question, is Terminator 2 the greatest sequel of all time? From the opening future-war battlefield to the legendary showdown between the T-800 and the liquid-metal T-1000, the boys break down why this film still holds up more than three decades later.Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as the Terminator, but this time the formula is flipped. Instead of hunting Sarah Connor, he's protecting her son, John Connor, the future leader of the human resistance. It's a twist that audiences in 1991 didn't see coming, and it gives the film its emotional core. The crew digs into Schwarzenegger at the absolute peak of his powers. After dominating the 80s with films like Predator, The Running Man and the original Terminator, Arnie was arguably the biggest movie star on the planet when T2 arrived. The famous bar scene, the sunglasses moment, and of course the immortal line "Hasta la vista, baby" all get the Born to Watch treatment.Linda Hamilton also gets her flowers in this episode. Her transformation from the vulnerable Sarah Connor of the first film into the hardened warrior of Judgment Day is one of the most dramatic character evolutions in action movie history. The boys discuss her intense performance, the physical transformation she underwent, and why her portrayal still feels authentic today.Edward Furlong's debut as John Connor sparks plenty of debate, too. Some love his rebellious street-kid energy, others question whether he's the most annoying teenager ever put in charge of humanity's future. Either way, he plays a crucial role in the film's emotional arc, and the developing bond between John and the T-800 is one of the movie's biggest surprises. Then there's Robert Patrick's T-1000. With his cold stare, relentless pursuit, and shape-shifting liquid metal body, he created one of the most terrifying villains of the 1990s. The guys break down why the T-1000 works so well and how the visual effects still look incredible today.Of course, no discussion of Terminator 2 would be complete without talking about the action set pieces. The LA River chase, the motorcycle-and-truck pursuit, the hospital escape, and the steel mill finale are all analysed in classic Born to Watch fashion. These scenes helped redefine what audiences expected from blockbuster filmmaking. The episode also dives into the film's massive cultural footprint. From the Guns N' Roses track "You Could Be Mine" to the revolutionary CGI that brought the T-1000 to life, Terminator 2 pushed cinema technology forward and influenced action movies for decades. But the big question remains: Does Terminator 2 actually surpass the original? That's the debate the Born to Watch crew finally settles. So slide into your leathers, fire up the Harley, and join the boys as they revisit one of the biggest and most influential action films ever made.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Terminator 2 the greatest sequel of all time?T-800 or T-1000 — which Terminator wins the showdown?Does Judgment Day beat the original Terminator?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and be part of the show!Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.#BornToWatch #Terminator2 #JudgmentDay #ArnoldSchwarzenegger #JamesCameron #90sAction #MoviePodcast #SciFiMovies #T1000 #HastaLaVistaBaby
2025 was a big year for film. Theaters drew people in for a wide variety of stories. Moviegoers saw thrillers like Paul Thomas Anderson's “One Battle After Another” and Josh Safdie's “Marty Supreme.” They saw the returns of beloved characters with James Gunn's “Superman” and James Cameron's “Avatar: Fire & Ash.” They embraced the strange with “Bugonia,” the romantic with “Materialists” and the tragic with “Frankenstein.”But, as has been increasingly the case in recent years, droves of moviegoers also showed up to films with heavily religious themes.Faith based studios and directors produced a variety of faith-forward movies with family-friendly animated movies like “David“ or “Light of The World” and more mature films such as “Guns and Moses” or “The Last Rodeo. But faith also appeared in many religiously unaffiliated Hollywood films, such as the latest installment of the “Knives Out” franchise which focused on the murder of a controversial catholic priest and Ryan Coogler's “Sinners,” which explored the clashes of spirituality and conventional religion. As the Oscars are fast approaching this weekend, Religion Unplugged's Culture Editor Jillian Cheney and Film Critic Joseph Holmes sat down with public intellectual and theologian Paul Anleitner. Paul is the President and CEO of Goodmakers, and the author of “Based on a True Story: Vibe Shifts, the End of Deconstruction, & the Reboot of Meaning,” which comes out this summer and is available for pre-order now. Jillian, Joseph and Paul talk through the spiritual and religious themes of some of this years' most beloved Oscar Nominees including “Sinners,” “Train Dreams,” “One Battle After Another” and “F1.”#oscars #goodmakers #podcast #paulanleitner #traindreams #sinners #f1 #onebattleafteranother

I never thought it would happen again: it's a posting episode. The Sickos go nuts over an instant classic thread about a bus driver gone rogue, share the best Steam update of all time (and possibly a reverse wife post?), discover "the Epstein Files of your generation," and learn about the Leviathan, a type of MALE creature that some allege can kick Godzilla's ass. It was not easy to find enough posts that actually are fun to read, but we did it! Thanks to Jacob Dallas for playing James Cameron in the cold open sketch!

In 1995, a film predicted POV recording technology, VR experiences you can buy on the black market, deepfake manipulation, police brutality caught on camera, and a society addicted to experiencing other people's lives through a screen. It starred Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett, and was written by James Cameron. Almost nobody saw it. Strange Days bombed at the box office, nearly destroyed Kathryn Bigelow's career, and has been virtually impossible to find ever since, as right now no streaming service carries it. But everything it warned us about has come true, and somehow the reality is worse than the fiction. MonteCristo, Thorin, and Richard Lewis make the case for why this is one of the most important sci-fi films ever made. We get into the SQUID tech that directly inspired Cyberpunk 2077's Braindances, the darkest plot device in sci-fi, Ralph Fiennes as the perfect cyberpunk noir anti-hero, Angela Bassett's tragically wasted career as an action star, the Rodney King and OJ parallels baked into the script, and a long conversation about how AI, social media, and surveillance culture have made this film more relevant than ever. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars in 1995 and called it a future cult classic. He was right. Again. Ben and Rob crack open the lab and fire up the lightning rods for their trip into Frankenstein, the long-gestating passion project from Guillermo del Toro, and things get stitched together fast. Before they even get near the operating table, the pair dig back to the source, Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, unpacking the Creature's original, deeply human motivation and how often adaptations miss the tragic point entirely. From there, Rob unveils a chaotic brand-new segment (almost definitely probably returning… maybe) in a heroic attempt to keep the episode on the rails, before the conversation lurches through cinema history: from the shadow of Boris Karloff's silver-screen monster in Frankenstein, to how that imagery still crackles through del Toro's gothic sensibilities. The boys also can't help noticing eerie déjà vu, debating why parts of this version feel like a near carbon copy of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein directed by Kenneth Branagh, and whether homage, coincidence, or mad-science recycling is to blame.Along the way, they detour into one of the wildest behind-the-scenes stories in Hollywood; how James Cameron reportedly helped Guillermo to save del Toro's kidnapped father and how that real-life horror shaped the filmmaker's lifelong obsession with monsters, loss, and empathy. It's bolts, brains, and big feelings as Ben and Rob ask what still shocks, what feels stitched together from past versions, what makes this Creature tick in 2025… and, as always, beneath the thunder, tragedy, and tortured men of science… what does Frankenstein really mean?CONSUUUME to find out all this and much, much more!PLUS! 4 years later and James Cameron is back with another headspinning installment of having us enter back into his worl of Pandora. Yes today's SPOILER REVIEW episode of "Sound Speed Action" is covering the mega-movie event of 2025 that was "Avatar: Fire and Ash". That of course means returning to the podcast after our review of "Avatar: Way of Water" 3 years ago is our good friend, Mr. Jonathan Olivo. We cover a lot of ground but I think we can definitely say this: WHAT. A. RIDE. Cameron does it again. Certain the visual effects alone are worth the price of movie theater admission alone but seriously this franchise and Fire and Ash bring a lot to it to make them special: The cast with Zoe Saldana (is she the biggest star ever?), Sam Worthing (wasnt crazy about him at first but by this installment he really owns and brought a lot of depth to this Fire and Ash). Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver - absolutely impressive with playing any role where there is literally any age. Superb. Oona Chaplan as Varang is a bit over the top but she also own it and goes full ham with her villain character Varang in a way that makes the character fun, complex, definitely interesting. Does it feel like a little bit of re-tread of the 2nd episode? We have some differing thoughts on that. Jack Champion is back as Spider in this movie. His role definitely has more weight here which opens up some doors for some fun directions that the Avatar world could go in? Only gripe with him is that the dialogue is a little paper thin. That said it doesnt take away from this thrill that at over 3 hours should feel long but flies so quickly with bringing all the thrills. Don't miss this one."Avatar: Fire and Ash" is playing in theaters. ABSOLUTELY THAT NEEDS TO BE EXPERIENCED ON THE BIG SCREEN! Enjoy. Also if you are enjoying the podcast, please drop us a review on whichever platform you get your podcasts. It helps the show a lot. Thanks.

Laci and Matt go through True Lies (1994), James Cameron's "normal" movie. The most expensive movie ever made at the time of its production. It could've just been a straightforward spy thriller, but instead Cameron and Arnold Schwarzenegger decided to put in every action movie idea they'd ever had. And the results are glorious. #craftbeer #netflix #warnerbros Big Jim aka James Cameron, legendary director of The Terminator, Titanic, Avatar, Aliens, and on and on and on, has taken a stand against the potential Netflix/Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition that would essentially create a TV and film monopoly. Perhaps more importantly to Mr. Cameron, it could be a critical blow to movie theaters. Will his open letter make a difference? Probably not, but we talk about the implication of media monopolies, especially when it comes to politics. Lastly, we get into controversial UFC fighter, Sean Strickland, as he called Bad Bunny a slur, degraded female fighters, and posted racist depictions of his opponent before fight night. Though some cheered on his antics, we think it may cause diminishing returns for the UFC if the political pendulum swings back and demands to root for better people. Cheers! This podcast episode delves into the complexities and intricacies of James Cameron's film, "The Abyss," a cinematic endeavor that profoundly explores the themes of human endurance and the inherent dangers of deep-sea exploration. We commence by emphasizing the significant aspects of pressurization and the meticulous nature of the film's underwater environment, which serves as a backdrop for the narrative's unfolding tension. The discussion navigates through the emotional depth of the characters, particularly highlighting the performances of Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, whose portrayals evoke a visceral response in the viewer. We critically analyze the film's latter segments, where the introduction of an alien element arguably detracts from the foundational human drama established earlier in the story. Ultimately, we reflect on the film's lasting impact, acknowledging its merits while lamenting the complications introduced by its more fantastical elements.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

Today on Art of the Cut we speak with Stephen Rivkin, ACE, who was one of the editors on James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash. The other editors included Cameron himself, Nicholas de Toth, Jason Gaudio, and John Refoua. Steve's been on Art of the Cut before when we discussed the previous Avatar film – The Way of Water. Steve also edited the first Avatar film, for which he was nominated along with John Refoua and James Cameron for an Oscar, a BAFTA, and an ACE Eddie Award. He won an Eddie for his work on Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. He was also nominated for ACE Eddies for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. Other films include Alita: Battle Angel, Ali, The Hurricane, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, and My Cousin Vinny. Today our discussion includes how the Avatar films use a unique two step process - first editing performance alone, then editing the final shots created with those performances, and on co-editing with the film's director, James Cameron, ACE.If you'd like to read along with this interview and see the trailer, video featurettes, clips and images from the film, visit the BorisFX.com website for the Art of the Cut blog.borisfx.com/blog/aotc

It's a shame this year's Oscar nominations have been named because John's new film idea could have swept the board. This podcast episode critically examines the cinematic prowess of James Cameron, particularly focusing on the film "Aliens." W assert that this movie exemplifies a remarkable shift from the suspenseful horror of its predecessor, "Alien," into a robust action narrative, thereby establishing a unique identity within the franchise. We delve into the thematic elements and character dynamics, noting the film's exploration of corporate greed and human folly in the face of existential threats. Furthermore, we reflect upon the notable performances, particularly that of Sigourney Weaver, and the film's lasting impact on the science fiction genre. Our discourse also addresses the pacing and structural concerns that arise, ultimately leading to a nuanced appreciation of Cameron's work, despite its apparent excesses.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

Simon Franglen is a multi-award-winning British composer and record producer whose music has been included in some of the most critically acclaimed films of recent decades. Franglen composed the acclaimed score for James Cameron's AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER in 2023, after his collaboration with the late James Horner on the original film in 2009. He received a 2023 World Soundtrack Award and a 2022 IFMCA Award for his efforts. His score was praised for expanding the sonic world of Pandora with both epic scale and profound intimacy and was a global hit, with the soundtrack album surpassing 750 million global streams. Over the past two years, he has continued his collaboration with Cameron on AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH, released in December 2025, a score that introduced major new themes, textures, and innovative electronica to the AVATAR musical universe. In January 2026, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury had the pleasure of talking to Simon via Zoom at his home in Los Angeles. During the interview, they talked about Simon's work on the AVATAR franchise, how he became involved in film music and his relationship and collaboration with the late great James Horner. The primary focus of this podcast episode is a critical examination of "Avatar: The Way of Water," a film directed by James Cameron that has elicited significant dissatisfaction from both hosts. They express their profound discontent, asserting that the film fails to capture the essence of its predecessor while simultaneously rehashing its narrative in a manner that lacks originality and coherence. They delve into various aspects of the film, discussing its storytelling flaws, character development issues, and the apparent reliance on visual spectacle over substantive plot. They articulate their frustrations regarding the film's numerous inconsistencies and perceived lack of character depth, particularly concerning the portrayal of the protagonist, Jake Sully, and the newly introduced characters. Ultimately, they conclude that the film is not only a disappointment but also an unfortunate manifestation of Hollywood's current trend toward superficiality and financial exploitation in cinematic storytelling.Support us:https://www.patreon.com/whatsourverdictEmail us:hosts@whatsourverdict.comFollow us:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/whatsourverdictTwitter: @whatsourverdictInstagram: @whatsourverdictYouTube: https://youtube.com/channel/UC-K_E-ofs3b85BnoU4R6liAVisit us:www.whatsourverdict.com

Sydney Sweeney drops lingerie line, Andy Dick out of rehab, Real World Puck resurfaces, Bill Burr's flailing podcast, more Blake Lively v. Ludacris, Morgan Wade and Carter Faith bailed on Kid Rock's tour. Sydney Sweeney has a new lingerie line out. She's in trouble for a bra-stunt on the Hollywood sign. Bill Burr's podcast is becoming laughable. Not necessarily funny, but laughable. The mainstream media doesn't seem to be all in on the Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni beef like Drew. Taylor Swift feels totally violated by the whole thing. Corey Feldman performed at the NAMM Jam Night and we're here for it. Kanye West has a new album coming out… which is probably why he's so sorry to the Jews. Dirty Dancing is dumping a sequel on us.
