Producer Confidence & Consumer Confidence (in the Economy), & Our Confidence (in Our Analyses): Noah Smith & Brad DeLong Record the Podcast We, at Least, Would Like to Listen to!; Aspirationally Bi-Weekly (Meaning Every Other Week); Aspirationally an hour...Key Insights:* The disjunction between all the economic data having been very good and very strong for the past year and tons of reports and commentary about how people “weren't feeling it” is mostly the result of the fact that things work with lags.* There are other factors: partisan politics, and the insistence of Republicans that they must not only vote but also at least say that they agree with their tribe.* There are other factors: the old journalistic adage that “what bleeds, leads”, exponentiated by the effects of our current short attention-span clickbait culture.* There are other factors: journalists, commentators, and the rest of the shouting class are depressed as their industries collapse around them, and somewhat of their situation leaks through.* There are other factors: while people think they personally are doing well, they do remember stories of others not doing wellm and are concerned.* But mostly it was just that things operate with lags: that was the major source of the “vibecession” gloom-and-doom which was at sharp variance with the actual economic dataflow.* We are not the modelers: we are, rather, the agents in the model.* The metanarrative is always harder than the narrative: trying to answer “why don't people say they think the economy is good?” is very hard to answer in a non-stupid way, and most of us are much better off just saying: “hey, guys, the economy is really good!”* It is good to be long reality—as long as you are not so leveraged that your position gets sold out from under you before the market marks itself to reality,.* Lags gotta lag.* And, finally, hexapodia!References:* Burn-Murdoch, John. 2023. “Should we believe Americans when they say the economy is bad?” Financial Times, December 1 .* Cummings, Ryan, & Neale Mahoney. 2023. “Asymmetric amplification and the consumer sentiment gap”. BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed speaks to veteran modelling agent Chris Gay to understand the shifting power dynamics in the modelling industry and how models can build a career that stands the test of time. Background: In the sometimes fickle and murky world of fashion modelling, the most successful models are taking control of their careers by bypassing the gatekeepers and creating direct relationships with customers, building and engaging their own fanbase.“If you want real longevity in this business, you need to be building your community. It's community that creates staying power,” says Chris Gay, co-chief executive officer of Elite World Group and president of The Society Management, which is marking its tenth anniversary this year. This week on The BoF Podcast, Gay sits down with BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed to discuss the shifting power dynamics in the modelling industry and why developing a point-of-view, something that a model becomes known for, is the key to long-term success.Key Insights:The rise of social media has benefitted models who no longer have to rely on runway shows and brand campaigns to stay relevant. Models can now connect with their fans and followers directly on Instagram or TikTok. “Talent is no longer beholden to anybody. They have real power in their hands. So if you're not chosen for this particular fashion show … that doesn't mean momentum stops for you,” says Gay. Social media platforms also help models create business relationships without the help of fashion's traditional players. “It was a very small strategic group of gatekeepers in fashion that had an extraordinary amount of influence over all talents. … Now, it's entirely changed,” he says. The power dynamics are shifting in other ways too. For some companies, working on a social ad with a well-known talent like Kendall Jenner or Liu Wen can have a bigger impact than a traditional ad campaign. “The next 10 years is really going to be about talent being a more effective and a more strategic distribution channel for everyone,” says Gay. Gay's advice to talent looking to break into the industry is twofold: build deep knowledge of the fashion industry and cultivate a style that essentially becomes your trademark. “Care about fashion. … It has nothing to do with the price of the items that you buy. But it really has to do with understanding collective style and what your own individual sense of style is,” he explains. Additional Resources:New Chinese Models Are Reshaping Global Runways: Local agencies are signing more models that don't have classical Han Chinese features with knock-on effects for who gets cast by megabrands in Europe and the US.Models, the New Power Publishers: Social media has turned fashion models into powerful digital publishers, some of whom have far larger audiences than brands or traditional magazines. The co-founder and chief innovation officer of the Nasdaq-listed sneaker brand reflects on how his previous career in sports prepared him professionally and personally for leading a company through both the highs and the lows. Background: When Tim Brown stepped away from his role as co-chief executive at Allbirds in May, the footwear retailer that he co-founded seven years ago was losing its sheen as the sustainability-focused direct-to-consumer darling that once enraptured investors. Its first full-year results since its Nasdaq flotation in November 2021 revealed a series of setbacks, from a poorly executed expansion into adjacent products like apparel to losing relevance with its core customers, leading to net losses of $101.35 million. The testing of Allbirds' team since the IPO has often seemed relentless yet, according to Brown, it's an opportunity to draw on inner strengths to excel as a leader. “[R]ising and falling is just a part of the journey,” he wrote in a recent post on LinkedIn in which he also shared an article by a team of business reporters that laid bare Allbirds' challenges. Rather than criticising the article, he said he saw it as a reminder that “you are never as good or as bad as they say you are (this helped me a lot during my football career), and that all of my best work has come when I've been written off.”This week on The BoF Podcast, Brown speaks with BoF founder and editor-in-chief Imran Amed on how his journey from the football pitch to the corporate boardroom has shown him why leaders of young brands like him need to keep a resilient entrepreneurial mindset even in adversity.Key Insights:The football pitch served as a training ground to cope with “an even more pressurised environment as an entrepreneur,” Brown said. “Sport teaches you to trust the process and to hold a long-term view, knowing that in the fullness of time that hard work usually is rewarded,” he said.Brown believes entrepreneurs need to find time to take stock, even if it means not working “100%” all of the time. “The most important thing that I've learned as an entrepreneur is not to confuse hard work with the right work.” he said. “You have the ability to maintain your focus on something for a longer period of time by just pulling back a little bit. And that space allows you the perspective to see something for what it is, which is a journey with steps forward and steps back.”When reflecting on the setbacks Allbirds has faced in recent times, Brown said that instead of searching to understand what he could have done differently, he wants to look forward. The key now, he said, is “get really, really clear on the things that we do better than anyone is the process that we're in.”Additional Resources:Tim Brown on Allbirds' Sustainable Footwear Revolution: Allbirds co-founder and co-CEO discusses how his high-risk strategy has created a sustainable brand that is disrupting the established footwear market. The Rise and Fall of Allbirds: The sneaker brand's comeback plan includes refocusing on its core consumer and a carbon-negative shoe. Is the marketing funnel dead? That question started bouncing around among those at Jarrard Inc. who have backgrounds and specialize in healthcare marketing. It's a provocative question, and provocative questions lead to sharp conversations that make for good podcasts. So, we asked two of those experienced healthcare marketers to have that conversation on the record. Pattie Cuen served at UCLA for two decades. There, she established the medical center's first internal communications team and orchestrated an award-winning branding campaign for the system. More recently, Cuen held a high-level position at Cedars-Sinai. Abby McNeil is a vice president at the firm and deputy lead of our Regional Practice. McNeil has served in a number of prominent roles, including vice president of communications and public affairs for CHRISTUS Health, where she sat at the helm of all corporate communications and helped guide the organization through COVID. Key Insights: The marketing funnel isn't dead. But it's not really the most accurate model, either. It serves a useful, mostly two-dimensional purpose to get a snapshot of how consumers move from awareness to conversion. It's also helpful as a relatively simple tool to present marketing concepts and different levels of messaging to people outside the field. The funnel doesn't take into account the time involved as people move from one stage to the next. That time could be five minutes for a digital engagement or weeks/months for an out-of-home campaign like a billboard. Another way to think about the customer journey is as an elliptical. Once someone converts and makes a purchase – or, in healthcare, becomes a patient – the selling process starts all over, and the patient has to choose you all over again. And again. And again. It's not one-and-done. Meanwhile, each person is sitting in the funnel – or spinning on the elliptical – of other providers, making it a multi-dimensional environment for conversion and retention. Because of that elliptical process, the patient experience has to be dialed in right alongside the marketing messages and platforms. If someone buys but can't schedule a followup appointment for weeks, they'll go somewhere else regardless of how great your marketing campaigns are. Learn more about your ad choices. In this economic reality, you must bring your A-Game when it comes to marketing. No more outdated websites...No more ignoring your "Shadow Brand", or your reputation on social media. You must strive to be Iconic in your market. This week, we're talking about how my son and I are marketing the local coffee shop we co-own together, Revel 77. Key Insights The importance of stepping up your marketing game in the current economic reality and moving away from ugly marketing strategies. Ugly websites no longer sell, as the competition now includes big players like Disney and AI technology, but this also means more opportunities for those who can create high-quality content. Your website is not enough to attract customers, you need to provide a valuable experience and build trust before asking for a purchase. Your online reputation, or "Shadow brand," is crucial for attracting customers, so it's important to provide the information they need to make a favorable decision about your business. Revel 77 Coffee in Spokane, WA enjoys having control over their coffee product by roasting it themselves, allowing them to tailor it to their customers' preferences. Build a sophisticated website and marketing hub to capture traffic and cater to the specific audience of your coffee shop, ensuring customer satisfaction and differentiation from competitors like Starbucks. How The Brain And Body Connection Impacts Health (Pt. 2) Dual board-certified physician in OB-GYN and Integrative Medicine Dr. Felice Gersh once again joins health seeker Adiel Gorel. She speaks about the brain and body connection, how all of the body's systems are interconnected, and how each organ system connects to the brain to impact overall health. Key Insights: The earlier division between the brain and body was artificial, says Dr. Gersh. In fact, all of the body's organ systems are connected and dependent upon each other for good health. The prime directive of life is the creation of new life, and the body's systems are designed accordingly: the immune system, heart function, digestion, and the musculoskeletal system. The impact of circadian rhythms is seen in our health, gut biome, sleep & even pregnancy, says Dr. Gersh. There is a two-way brain and body connection. The vagus nerve connects the brain to the organs; a part of the autonomic nervous system. These systems help regulate emotion, hormone production, sleep, heartbeat, etc. Dr. Gersh explains how hormones can help improve sleep, mood, memory, gut health, and more. She also speaks about how endocrine disruptors impact health. Author, Investment Expert and Wellness Advocate Adiel Gorel isn't just an expert in his chosen fields but also a storyteller who makes complex issues easily accessible. A new BoF Insights report tracks the evolution of the fast-growing high-end footwear market — and why luxury shoppers are willing to spend more than ever on the perfect shoe. Background: Luxury footwear is booming as consumers opt to spend more than ever on shoes with soaring prices. The market for designer shoes is set to grow to $40 billion by 2027, up from $31 billion in 2022, according to Euromonitor International. As consumer demand grows, competition is heating up for brands from Manolo Blahnik and Christian Louboutin to Chanel and Prada who stake much of their businesses on the core segment. The market is much-changed: shoppers crave comfort, but also newness and uniqueness. They also have more choices than ever: cowboy boots, Mary Janes, stilettos and mules have been trending recently. “There was this vibe shift occurring post-pandemic. The shoes that consumers want today look and feel very different from what they had before,” said Diana Lee, BoF's director of research and analysis, on the heels of publishing BoF Insights' latest report “The Statement Shoe: Reimagining Designer Footwear.” Key Insights: The footwear category is poised for growth this year: 84 percent of consumers surveyed across the UK, US and China told BoF Insights they were planning on investing in footwear in the coming year. At the same time, prices for women's footwear have increased 10 percent from 2019. Shoes have gotten more expensive, partially, thanks to streetwear's hype cycle, which has conditioned consumers to shell out for limited edition items. Of course, inflation and rising costs across the supply chain have contributed to increases. Much about the footwear market has changed. Mass trends toward casualisation have led consumers to seek out comfort, primarily, when buying shoes. Still, high heels are performing well following the return of in-person events. And, the high heel space has seen a sort of reinvention as brands opt for designs that grab consumers attention — like Loewe's eggshell and balloon designs. Meanwhile, newcomers like Amina Muaddi are stealing share. Background: Leather alternatives have been called both industry-changing eco-innovation, and dismissed as mere plastic — covering up complexities in how products are made and how much better or worse for the environment they are. At the same time, brands are increasingly using buzzy terms like “vegan leather” and “plant-based” to sell products, without doing much to explain their environmental impact.“You have to be very careful and very switched on to understand what it is you're buying as a consumer,” said BoF chief sustainability correspondent Sarah Kent. Key Insights: The emergence of items made with alternative materials — like mycelium, also known as mushroom “leather” — has sparked a conversation about how brands should name and market products without greenwashing.Because innovation is in its early stages, it's hard to understand, track and compare impact versus leather. Without clear data, the space is difficult to regulate. Plastic is a dirty word. But, the material is so useful, it's hard to replace in fashion. Most available leather alternatives aren't plastic free, but rather, just feature reduced plastic content. For brands working with such materials, the best course of action when it comes to talking about them is to be transparent with the consumer — rather than leading them to believe they're buying a magic, new harmless material. Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, the creators of a new docuseries speak to BoF's Tim Blanks about their new series which traces the formation of LVMH and Kering, and how designers like John Galliano and Alexander McQueen helped them build a ‘Kingdom of Dreams.' Background: A new fashion docuseries, “Kingdom of Dreams,” explores the luxury fashion industry's formation in the 1990s to the 2000s, examining some of fashion's most recognisable designers of that period — John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs and Tom Ford — as well as executives like Kering's François Pinault and LVMH's Bernard Arnault. Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui highlight the tension between commerce and creativity, as well as the rivalries between luxury groups and their designers. “At the end of the day, we never said anything that hasn't been said or which is not sort of present,” said Bonhôte. “So the truth is very important. And we are… definitely not scandalous.” This week on The BoF Podcast, BoF's editor-at-large Tim Blanks speaks with Bonhôte and Ettedgui about understanding pressures of consumerism and what makes a fashion house business tick. Key Insights:The creators highlighted the gap between creativity “wizards” and business “emperors” within some of fashion's largest fashion houses, demonstrating the power of tycoons François Pinault and Bernard Arnault. “What we felt was the most interesting drama is there is this constant fight between commerce and creativity,” said Bonhôte. The series also highlights the pressures on designers to double the volume of collections and the impact of that growth on the planet. “It is disturbing to see the fallout and not just the fallout psychologically for the designers, but also for the planet as fashion speeds up,” said Ettedgui. While examining the industry the creators wanted the audience to gain a new understanding of fashion rather than the gated community it can be perceived as. “It's a very difficult industry for people to actually understand because I think the [understanding of] fashion is almost wrong,” said Bonhôte.Additional Resources: How Fashion Went Corporate: Creativity, Commerce and Collateral Damage: Tim Blanks talks to the creators of ‘Kingdom of Dreams,' a new documentary series on how the corporatisation of luxury fashion made superstars of designers John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Tom Ford and Marc Jacobs, and built gilded empires for bosses Bernard Arnault and François Pinault. To subscribe to the BoF Podcast, please follow this link. Key Insights:The only way to buy insurance against the fiscal theory of the price level’s becoming relevant for the inflation outlook is to keep Trump and Trumpists out of officeWe have one political party that could well, someday, turn us inflation-wise into “Argentina”: the Republicans. But thankfully we have only one such political party.Democrats need to develop a policy framework for a time of inflation: capacity-building progressivism. We do not yet know whether what the Fed has done is sufficient to return inflation to its 2%/year Core PCE target. If the Fed overdoes inflation fighting, we might well find ourselves back at the zero lower bound on interest rates—and that would be a hell of a mess, much worse than having Core PCE inflation at 5%/year for an extra year or so.Hexapodia!References:Olivier Blanchard: Inflation and unemployment. Key Insights:The most recent round of Tech elephants, rhinoceroses, unicorns, and spiny lizards—Netflix, Shopify, etc.—are very unlikely to payoff for those investors who stay on the ride to the very end. That said, they were very much worth doing even if they never make their shareholders any money. The growth of communities of engineering, entrepreneurial, and organizational practice is a huge benefit for innovation and growth—and the overwhelming bulk of that becomes non-rival public knowledge, that nobody can make scarce and hence charge people through the nose for.Having your rich and your superrich fund R&D for little return is not the worst thing to have happen. The ideas behind “Web3”—an end to the walled-garden Web2 internet, with the useful parts of the social graph trustable and publicly accessible to anyone who wants to communicate—are great ones. The ideas behind “Web2”—the clickbait-ad walled-gardens—are horrible.
