DOJ Investigating Medical Journals For Fraud; Publishers Call Letters “Harassment” w/ Elijah Schaffer & Dr. Ram Yogendra – Ask Dr. Drew – Ep 481

The DOJ is investigating top medical journals for biased editorial practices, alleging they suppressed studies on COVID-19 vaccine risks and alternative therapeutics for partisan reasons. NBC reports the science publications (including CHEST, New England Journal of Medicine, and Obstetrics and Gynecology) were sent letters “questioning their editorial practices.” In response, medical journal The Lancet called the letters “harassment” and claimed science in the USA was being “violently dismembered” by all of these annoying questions being asked by the peasants. “This corrupt web of suppression, fraud, and retractions demands a legal reckoning,” writes epidemiologist Nicolas Hulscher. Dr. Ram Yogendra, MD, MHP, is a board-certified anesthesiologist with a public health background. The Bourbon Road

Hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter, connecting remotely from Colorado and Kentucky respectively, discuss recent happenings in the bourbon world and taste a couple of whiskies. Jim is in Colorado Springs for a Derby party, having flown out of Louisville on Derby Day. He mentions winning an exacta on the Derby race. He is sipping on Woodford Reserve Distiller's Select 90.4 proof, the annual Derby bottle, describing it as a traditional Woodford. He notes that at the Derby party, they were making mint juleps with Evan Williams Bottled-in-Bond, and while not his favorite drink, he partook. He even helped make the simple syrup. Todd is drinking Penelope Architect, the third in their series. It's a straight bourbon whiskey sourced from MGP, finished in French oak staves, bottled at 104 proof, and retails around $65. Todd finds it nice, noting the MGP cherry character and a "funky oak" from the French staves. They discuss Lost Lantern's new monthly subscription service, which recently launched after they had previously speculated about something similar. The service costs $90 a month plus shipping for a different bottle each month, special sign-up bottles, behind-the-scenes stories, exclusive events, virtual tastings, and early access to new releases. News from Buffalo Trace includes an announcement that they are adding an EH Taylor bottled-in-bond to the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection (BTAC). They speculate it will be a well-aged version and note that some EH Taylor bottles already fetch prices similar to BTAC on the secondary market. They express hope that these will be findable, perhaps requiring waiting in line as in past years. Other news includes the release of the new Wild Turkey 8-year 101, which is starting to hit shelves at an MSRP of $49. They note that 8 years is the minimum age, and it could contain older stock. They are looking forward to reviewing it and comparing it to the 70th-anniversary release. Whiskey Thief has released their 2025 Mayday Rye, a 7-year-old, 146 proof (hazmat) rye. It's available at their distillery in Frankfort and their new tasting room in Louisville, and they are now shipping to some states. The hosts praise Whiskey Thief's ryes. Jim mentions an upcoming interview and tour at Law's Whiskey House in Denver during his Colorado trip. He notes Law's has established itself as a pioneer in Colorado whiskey, particularly with their bottled-in-bond and American single malts. Jim's second pour is the 291 Colorado Rye Whiskey finished in Aspen wood staves and maple syrup barrels, the "M" release, at 122 proof. He finds it has a great maple sweetness and notes that 291 whiskies are generally easy to identify due to their unique profile. He mentions his son recently volunteered bottling and labeling at 291, noting things are going well for the distillery. Todd's second pour is Pikesville Straight Rye from Heaven Hill, 110 proof and 6 years old, retailing around $50. He considers it a classic and a great value rye. He recalls being introduced to it during an interview with Bernie Lubbers at the Evan Williams Experience. They briefly discuss the Heaven Hill rye mashbill used for Rittenhouse and Elijah Craig Ryes, noting different proofs and ages. They talk about recent trends, including the rise of ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails, which are exploding in popularity, especially with younger consumers. They mention that the largest distillery in the US is now producing White Claw. While neither host is personally a big fan of seltzers or most RTDs, they acknowledge the market demand and hope bourbon is well-represented in this category. They also discuss the growing trend of THC-infused beverages, noting that hemp-derived THC under 0.3% by weight is federally legal. They express confusion about the health claims and draw parallels to the initial marketing of vaping as a safe alternative to cigarettes. They mention a recent barrel pick they did at James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington for Bourbon on the Banks. They tasted three barrels and selected a bourbon, choosing one they felt would appeal more broadly, although they personally favored another with a great nose (vanilla icing, cake batter). They highlight the historical tour at James E. Pepper, discussing the distillery's long history and the role of James E. Pepper's wife. They note they also tried an excellent rye there aged 7-8 years. They discuss the recent move of RD1 Spirits to a new location and Macaulay Minton's Dark Arts moving into the old RD1 space, noting Macaulay's unique tastes and the interesting decor. They mention Sarah Algrim joining Macaulay. Beau Cumberland's Frankfurt Bourbon documentary is highlighted, with an upcoming screening on Friday, June 13th at The Foundry in Frankfurt, kicking off Bourbon Week. The screening is donation-based, with proceeds going to Frankfurt flood victims. Todd is the narrator for the documentary and receives praise from Jim for his narration skills. They hope to make the documentary more widely available in the future. Jim mentions researching a historical Shannon distillery in Shelbyville from the early 1800s. They recommend Beau Cumberland's YouTube page for short interviews and mini-docs on American spirits. Jim concludes by noting the pleasant "chest hug" from the 291 rye and acknowledging the late hour for Todd. Todd mentions a busy day with his son's soccer game. They wrap up the episode, encouraging listeners to find The Bourbon Road on social media and subscribe to the podcast. The journalist Richie McGinniss has always craved action. As a reporter he's found it – and a lot more – in the chaos of the streets, embedding himself with protestors to cover the most divisive and violent demonstrations in American history.Richie may be a media professional of the new era, posting his intense, on-the-ground videos on social media, but he brings an old-school newsman's credibility from his extensive professional experience and globe-trotting life story.Richie studied Arabic and Middle Eastern history at Georgetown University and subsequently traveled to Jordan, Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, and Egypt's Tahrir Square less than a month before it became the flashpoint for the widespread protests and revolutions that erupted during the Arab Spring. Richie has worked at the Al-Jazeera program, “Min Washington,” broadcasting to households in Arabic throughout the Middle East, at NBC News's Washington Bureau as a production assistant, and as the video director at Daily Caller, where he built a team of ten video producers. While covering the demonstrations in Kenosha, Wisconsin, sparked by the police shooting of Jacob Blake, Richie witnessed Kyle Rittenhouse shoot Joseph Rosenbaum and nearly got shot himself when a bullet ricocheted near his foot. Richie was plunged into the national spotlight and praised for his clear, non-biased, neutral reporting of the violence. On the ground for the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol, Richie not only got closer to the action than virtually any other journalist but emerged with a nuanced understanding of how news events can be interpreted and manufactured by the media. Richie recently published his book, Riot Diet: One Man's Ride Through America in Chaos. I've read Riot Diet and can tell you it's a powerful series of reports from some of the most infamous protest riots of our times. Though definitely not for the faint of heart, I highly recommend Richie's book to anyone interested in an insider's look at some of the people covering those events and how they unfold.https://www.amazon.com/stores/author/B0DLQXN1DK

Here’s a sample episode recapping four Tuesday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts: ihr.fm/3InlkL8 It's Tax Day Buck Sexton begins by sharing his personal experience of becoming a new father, expressing gratitude for the support received and discussing the joys and challenges of parenthood. This heartfelt segment sets a positive tone for the hour. The conversation then shifts to significant political and social issues. The hosts discuss the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an individual deported to El Salvador, and the legal and political implications surrounding his deportation. They explore the broader context of U.S. foreign policy and the judicial system's role in such matters. Another major topic is the Trump administration's stance on "woke" campuses, specifically the decision to freeze $2 billion in funding to Harvard University. The hosts criticize the high costs of higher education and the perceived left-wing bias in universities. They argue for the need to hold educational institutions accountable and reduce taxpayer subsidies. The discussion also touches on the broader issue of administrative bloat in universities, with a focus on the growth of non-teaching staff and the impact on educational quality and costs. The hosts highlight the role of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs and their influence on campus culture. Good and Evil Clay Travis and Buck Sexton discussing the tragic incident in Frisco, Texas, where 17-year-old Austin Metcalf was fatally stabbed by another 17-year-old, Karmelo Anthony, at a track meet. They explore the legal and societal implications of the case, highlighting the controversial aspects of the defense fund that has raised over $400,000 for Anthony, and the subsequent reduction of his bail from $1 million to $250,000. The hosts express their concerns about the misuse of these funds, as the family reportedly purchased a new house with the donations. The conversation transitions to broader themes of justice and self-defense, questioning the societal and racial dynamics at play in this case. They compare the media and public reactions to similar incidents involving different racial backgrounds, emphasizing the role of identity politics in shaping public perception and legal outcomes. Alan Dershowitz's commentary on the case is also discussed, where he points out the racial biases that influence jury selection and public opinion. The hosts agree with Dershowitz's assessment that the racial dynamics significantly impact the narrative and potential outcomes of such cases. Throughout the hour, Clay and Buck stress the importance of distinguishing between good and evil, and the challenges posed by identity politics in achieving true justice. They argue that the current societal climate often leads to skewed perceptions and unjust support for individuals based on race rather than the facts of the case. And why this case is not the same as Kyle Rittenhouse. President Trump's latest move to potentially tax Harvard University as a political entity. This bold strategy is part of Trump's broader effort to hold woke universities accountable and reduce their reliance on federal tax dollars. The hosts praise Trump's proactive approach and highlight the significant reduction in border encounters, showcasing the effectiveness of his policies. Kilmar Abrego Garcia The conversation then shifts to the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an alleged MS-13 gang member. The hosts criticize the media's portrayal of Garcia as a "Maryland man" and emphasize his criminal background and gang affiliation. They discuss the legal complexities surrounding his deportation and the political implications of Democrats' opposition to Trump's immigration policies. AG Pam Bondi and Karoline Leavitt's comments on the case are highlighted, reinforcing the narrative that Garcia's deportation was justified and necessary for national security. The hosts argue that Trump's actions are a strategic move to address immigration issues and protect American citizens. The discussion also touches on the broader impact of Trump's policies on illegal immigration, noting the significant decrease in border crossings and the potential self-deportation of individuals with criminal records. The hosts emphasize the importance of enforcing immigration laws and the positive outcomes of Trump's administration in this regard. They then switch gears to expose the unbelievable waste and corruption within the now-defunct Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS). The hosts detail the misappropriation of taxpayer funds, lavish offices, personal expenditures on government credit cards, and non-existent oversight within the agency. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the White House's refusal to oblige court orders halting its deportation planes, Trump's invocation of the Alien Enemies Act, Trump's brutal deportations, NIH's scrubbing of mRNA research grants, Trump's bombardment of Yemen, Schumer's book tour, dropping Democratic popularity, DOGE cuts to Los Alamos, Trump's reversal of Biden pardons, the Voice of America, and the court-ordered rehiring of federal employees, before diving a little deeper into Senator Schumer's capitulation to Trump and the GOP's budget push. Next, they highlight the immediate result of Schumer and Senate Democrats' affirmation of the Trump/Musk agenda, as the Trump regime spent this weekend expanding their regime of brutal abductions and inhumane migrant abuses, looking to the illegal flight of migrants to El Salvador (and the corresponding Twitter promos), and the recently released video by the ACLU of ICE's abduction of Mahmoud Khalil. They also dissect Schumer's reflections on voting “yes” to advance the Elon/Trump GOP budget, exploring his willing adoption of the Trump Administration's framing of the “Continuing Resolution,” his eagerness to let GOP Congresspeople shirk any responsibility for the Trump/Musk agenda, and the damage the vote has wrought on the Democratic Party itself – including the Party's record-low approval rating and the growing divide between Senate leadership and the Party caucus. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Chris Murphy blatantly refuse to state his confidence in Chuck Schumer's leadership and unpack Batya Ungar-Sargon's insane argument for “MAGA Leftism” on Bill Maher. Pete Thiel and Dave Rubin mock HBCUs for being “dumb,” Mimi from Colorado has a PSA for ICE operations in Colorado and the importance of trusting librarians. Craig from LA explores the defense of Social Security in Congress, and Ben from Memphis on Kyle Rittenhouse's speaking appearance at the University of Memphis. Chuck Edwards explains his alignment with Trump's imperial goals, and Perry from Lexington touches on the GOP's major roadblock to trans healthcare in Kentucky with HB-495, plus, your calls and IMs! Growing up in Connecticut and Long Island, New York, McGinniss studied Arabic and Middle Eastern history at Georgetown University and traveled to Jordan, Turkey, Israel, Lebanon, and Egypt's Tahrir Square less than a month before it became the flashpoint for the widespread protests and revolutions that erupted during the Arab Spring. McGinniss next worked at the Al-Jazeera program “Min Washington,” broadcasting to households in Arabic throughout the Middle East, at NBC News's Washington Bureau as a production assistant, and as the video director at Daily Caller, where he built a team of ten video producers. While covering the demonstrations in Kenosha, Wisconsin, sparked by the police shooting of a black man named Jacob Blake, McGinniss witnessed Kyle Rittenhouse shoot Joseph Rosenbaum and nearly got shot himself when a bullet ricocheted near his foot. McGinniss was plunged into the national spotlight and was praised for his clear, non-biased reporting of the violence. As The New Yorker observed in its trial coverage, “when McGinniss testified, he strove to be as assiduously neutral about the shooting as he had been in interviews with me and with others.” After his appearance on Tucker Carlson was taken out of context by CNN, McGinniss's straightforward appearance not only corrected the record, it also showed how one person can compel a news corporation to diverge from preset talking points and relay to the public the truth behind a shooting that will go down in history as the peak of 2020's unrest.   But McGinniss soon found himself a political lightning rod. Donald Trump's MAGA supporters initially celebrated McGinniss for not vilifying Rittenhouse and merely reporting what he saw. During the trial, his role as a named victim put him in the crosshairs of the political right. After Rittenhouse's acquittal on murder charges, McGinniss felt the wrath of Black Lives Matters supporters and others. “I was really the friend of nobody,” he says.

Delight Your Marriage | Relationship Advice, Christianity, & Sexual Intimacy

I have been a long time fan of Nathan Rittenhouse and his work at Thinking Out Loud Together and today, I had the incredible privilege of sitting down with Nathan Rittenhouse for our podcast! Nathan is a speaker, apologist, and co-founder of Thinking Out Loud Together. Our conversation today was filled with rich insights about intimacy, humility, integrity, and the way marriage fits into God's grand design. I truly can't wait for you to hear it! There's so much to unpack, but here are some of the biggest takeaways from our conversation: The Bigger Purpose of Marriage: Building a Legacy That Lasts Nathan shared how his perspective on marriage has been deeply shaped by the generations of faithful, steady relationships in his family. He reminded us that marriage isn't just about two people—it impacts generations. "What will my descendants 200 years from now say about the type of life I lived?" he asked. This long-term vision is something I would encourage every reader and listener to think about. We often get so caught up in the day-to-day struggles of marriage, but when we zoom out, we see that every choice we make—every act of love, every moment of kindness, every decision to honor our spouse—ripples out for generations. What an incredible reason to be intentional about how we love, respect, and serve in our marriages! Intimacy as Worship: God's Design for Physical and Emotional Connection One of the most powerful themes we explored was how intimacy—yes, physical intimacy—can actually be an act of worship. Nathan pointed out that God designed the physical world—including our bodies—as good.  And when we engage in intimacy within God's design, it's not just a physical act—it's a deeply spiritual one. It's an opportunity to delight in God's creation, to experience His love, and to reflect His heart. Instead of something to be endured or achieved, it becomes something to celebrate—a way to glorify the Lord. Sexuality & Integrity: Practicing Spiritual Discipline in Private Nathan emphasized that our true selves are revealed in private moments.  He highlighted Jesus' words in Matthew 6, where He speaks about the Father rewarding what is done in secret. And that's so important when it comes to things like purity, faithfulness, and battling temptations like pornography. True integrity means being the same person in private that we present in public. Or as Nathan said, “Preach what you practice”, not just practice what you preach, but actually live with such integrity that your life naturally becomes the message. The Power of Male Friendships: Emotional Support & Community for Men Nathan and I also talked about something that's so often overlooked: the power of godly male friendships. He pointed out that a lot of men struggling in their marriages—whether it's loneliness, unmet expectations, or just feeling stuck—often lack deep, strong friendships with other men. And part of the problem is that our culture has sexualized everything- including strong, male friendships- making it difficult for men to form those healthy, meaningful bonds. But here's the thing: God designed men to need other men in their lives. Just like women thrive when they have strong female friendships, men need brothers—not just surface-level friendships, but real, deep, iron-sharpening-iron relationships. Christian Hope in Marriage: Finding Strength in God's Design We also discussed that unity in marriage is a byproduct of a shared focus on Christ. Unity in marriage isn't found by fixing our eyes on each other—it's found by fixing our eyes on Christ. When we try to make our spouse the center of our world, things get out of balance. But when we prioritize our relationship with God, everything else—including our marriages—falls into its rightful place.  Encouragement for Those Struggling: Finding Strength in God's Love And finally, for those feeling discouraged—whether it's low intimacy, unmet expectations, or loneliness—Nathan left us with this powerful reminder: Our ultimate satisfaction must be in Christ. Marriage is a gift. But it was never meant to replace our deepest need—to be fulfilled in God's love. If you're struggling right now, know this: God sees you. He loves you. And He is the one who fills the deepest places of your heart. Thank you again, Nathan, for this incredible conversation, for your joy in the Lord, and the deep, valuable insights you've shared with us! This conversation was truly such a gift. And to you, dear listener and dear reader- may this conversation bless you, inspire you, and remind you of how deeply the Lord loves you. Blessings,   Belah & Team PS - Want to hear more from Nathan? I have learned how to build my marriage. Building it is now a journey and no longer an intense, overwhelming mission impossible.”

Antonio L. Ingram II is Senior Counsel at the NAACP LDF. He is a graduate of Yale College and UC Berkeley School of Law.  He served as a law clerk for the honorable Ivan L. Lemelle in the Eastern District of Louisiana and for Chief Judge Roger L. Gregory for the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Antonio also completed a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship in Malawi where he did anti-corruption work. Talking to Antonio Ingram II, someone I met when he was a first year law student and I was the Director of Employer Outreach and Career Counselor, left me feeling inspired to focus on doing social justice work sustainably. In this episode with Antonio, we discuss:  How his background growing up as a Black American in Oakland instills his passion for justice and drives his purpose to make the world better than what he inherited. Why as the descendants of slaves, he believes it's important to clerk for two Black federal judges and change the laws that once held his ancestors in bondage to now protect marginalized communities.   What it felt like to be the only non-White law clerk out of 20 law clerks even when clerking in very diverse states, and why it's important to diversify clerkships.   What we can do to improve the education system, and make public schools a place of integration and learning.   What you can do to have hope, especially during dark times like the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict, by focusing on the progress we've made.   How growing up poor makes us afraid of poverty and keeps us as indentured servants in corporate America, and what we can do to let go of that fear and focus on finding happiness.   How to overcome what seems like insurmountable obstacles by sustaining yourself with wonder and gratitude.   What we learn from Black men who were the first to go to high profile jobs like Goldman Sachs dying prematurely compared to their peers.  How to make the world a better place and not be a martyr and succumb to powers literally trying to take you out and force you to overwork yourself to prove yourself.  How completing a Fulbright Public Policy Fellowship in Malawi where he did anti-corruption work allowed him to get away from White Supremacy and grow in a way that was life empowering.   How to maintain perspective, and know that where you grow up and where you come from does not have to be your entire world, and your world can be boundless.   Want to connect with us? It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma speak with Jasper Nathaniel, writer of the Infinite Jaz newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent piece in The Drift magazine entitled "In Ruins: Archaeological Warfare in the West Bank." First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the GOP's continuing struggle to get a continuing resolution, Pelosi blocking AOC's run for Oversight chair, the Senate's National Defense Authorization Act, Ukraine's bombing of Russia's chemical weapons chief, TikTok's Supreme Court fight, Trump's EV fight, RFK's meeting with Senators, Trudeau's shakey administration, US wealth inequality, and Josh Hawley's CTC for the middle- and upper-classes, before diving a little deeper into Nancy Pelosi's (notably no longer a member of party leadership) torpedoing of AOC's bid to be Dem chair on the Congressional Oversight Committee, and touching on Trump's attempt to run cover for his health and safety-related administrative choices and their rabid anti-vax beliefs. Jasper Nathaniel then joins, diving right into the concept of “Judea and Samaria” that has been advanced recently by American zionists like Bill Clinton and Mike Huckabee, unpacking its deep history as the zionist term for the West Bank, and how that relates to a rapidly progressing agenda of Israeli annexation of the Palestinian West Bank, with Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotricht recent transfer of power over the West Bank away from civil authority, and his use of antiquity law to expand Israeli control over the region. Stepping back, Nathaniel walks Sam and Emma through the historical relationship between archeology and the zionist colonization of Palestine, beginning with the British surveying of the region whilst under their control at the turn of the century, where they grounded their research within biblical terms, directly assigning any discoveries to Biblical passages and civilizations, a tactic directly picked up on by the burgeoning Zionist movement at the time, and employed as a hard science as they pushed their agenda of creating “facts on the ground” to legitimize their right to the land Palestinian had lived on for generations. Expanding on this story, Jasper tackles the continued abuse of archeology by the Zionist regime over the following few decades, with the 1967 border agreement immediately coming under violation by Israeli archeologists, before coming back to the present to unpack Israel's utterly destructive approach to the genocide of Gaza in contrast with their slow, technocratic approach to slowly revoking the autonomy of various regions in the West Bank, tackling how this authority is grounded in much of the West Bank's presence on supposedly “protected” archeological sites. Looking to the supposed “authority” that grounds Israel's ongoing annexation of the West Bank, Nathaniel touches on the transferring of West Bank management from Israel's Civil authority to their Archeological authority, before wrapping up with an extensive conversation on the overwhelming ubiquity – and banality – of violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, and the future of the project for Palestinian liberation under a second Trump Administration. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma tackle Trump's recent comments on the relationship between vaccines and autism (and Fox's unsurprising response), and watch CNN's Michael Smerconish bemoan the lack of a public vigil for the recently murdered CEO of UnitedHealthcare, contrasting him with folks like John Lennon, George Floyd, and the victims of Kyle Rittenhouse. Deadleg and Tyler give their takes on the landmark case and how Rittenhouse continues to be divisive despite his acquittal. Rittenhouse gained national attention at age 17 for shooting three men in Kenosha, Wisconsin—two fatally—in August 2020, amid protests following the police shooting of Jacob Blake. He had traveled to Kenosha during the unrest, and joined a group of armed people who said they were there to protect businesses. In a series of confrontations, Rittenhouse fatally shot two men who had tried to grab his gun, and injured another who had pointed a firearm at him. Rittenhouse was subsequently charged by Kenosha County prosecutors with multiple criminal counts, including homicide. Rittenhouse claimed self-defense at trial and was acquitted in November 2021. Now Rittenhouse is on a quasi-celebrity circuit of public appearances, being the center of both attention and derision wherever he goes. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
