Welcome back to A Podcask of Amontillado, where we delve into the dark, dreadful, and terrifying parts of the world. Lonely highways. The holler in Appalachia. Deep in New England. The Southwestern desert. The plantations of the South. All of Maine. Where a tale of terror is set is just as important as the characters and creatures you will encounter! Erin & Gary are joined by author Nicole Givens Kurtz of Mocha Memoirs press as they delve into the intricate relationship between horror and location. Listen in as they explore how places can carry the weight of trauma & history, the significance of settings in shaping narratives, the lingering effects of past horrors on communities, proper pronunciation of Appalachia, the importance of representation, haunting legacies, blaming Stephen King, the duality of spaces that can be both beautiful & terrifying, isolation, the apocalypses we were promised, and pecan logs. A woman sneaks along mansion grounds, seeking entry to the house to get revenge on the evil old man living there. But her memory is wrapped in darkness. Is she doing the right thing?Lee Clark Zumpe, an entertainment columnist with Tampa Bay Newspapers, earned his bachelor's in English at the University of South Florida. He began writing poetry and fiction in the early 1990s. His work has regularly appeared in a variety of literary journals and genre magazines over the last two decades. Publication credits include World War Cthulhu and The Children of Gla'aki from Dark Regions Press; Through a Mythos Darkly from PS Publishing; Children of Lovecraft Country and Shadows of an Inner Darkness from Golden Goblin Press; and Corridors and The Pickman Papers from Innsmouth Gold. Lee lives on the west coast of Florida with his wife and daughter. Lee's inclination toward horror manifested itself early in his childhood when he began flipping through the pages of Forrest J. Ackerman's Famous Monsters of Filmland and reading Gold Key Comic classics like Boris Karloff Tales of Mystery and Grimm's Ghost Stories. In his teenage years, he discovered Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, Richard Matheson and other masters of the genre. Lee's work often focuses on character interaction set against a pervading sense of cosmic dread and high strangeness. You can read "In The Window" at https://www.kaidankaistories.com.Website: kaidankaistories.comPlease feel free to contact me through the website contact form.Follow us on: InstagramFacebookBlueskySubstack
Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Necronomicon (1993), and Gods of the Deep (2023) While Stephen King may dominate when it comes to movie adaptations of his work—good or bad—one might expect that H.P. Lovecraft, given his immense impact on the literary world, would inspire just as many films. Yet, despite his influence, far fewer movies have been made from his stories than you'd think. Perhaps it's because Lovecraft's horror isn't about the details of what his characters see, but rather what those horrors do to them—often driving them into madness. And therein lies the beauty of his work. In this episode, we dive into three very different films, spanning three decades, each drawing from the strange and unsettling tales of this enigmatic author from Providence, Rhode Island. If you're not well-versed in Lovecraft's work, this is your chance to experience three adaptations—loose as they may be—that offer a glimpse into his nightmarish imagination. Films Mentioned in this Episode: Castle Freak (1995), Color Out of Space (2019), Creepshow (1982), The Crimson Blade (1963), Crying Freeman (1995), Demon Wind (1990), The Devil-Ship Pirates (1964), Die, Monster, Die! (1965), Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966), The Dunwich Horror (1970), The Evil Dead (1981), From Beyond (1986), Gamera, Guardian of the Universe (1995), Gods of the Deep (2023), Hatchet (2006), The Haunted Palace (1963), Humanoids from the Deep (1981), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), The Invisible Ray (1935), Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988), Leprechaun (1993), Leprechaun 2 (1994), Leprechaun 4: In Space (1996), Leprechaun 5: In the Hood (2000), Leprechaun 6: Back 2 Tha Hood (2003), Lovecraft Country (2020), Lurking Fear (1994), Necronomicon (1993), Re-Animator (1985), Return of the Living Dead III (1993), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), The Unnamable (1988), Vampyres (1974)

I first became aware of Wunmi Mosaku at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Her feature, His House, premiered there and not only was the film itself exquisite, but Mosaku herself was a top-tier interview, brimming with passion and enthusiasm for her craft. From that point on, I've made it a priority to seek out Mosaku's past work and keep up with all of her new releases, and it's paid off big time.Since His House's release on Netflix, Mosaku became a scene-stealer in Lovecraft Country, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Loki, she did her first voice performance for the acclaimed animated series Scavengers Reign, and now, for the very first time, she's at the top of the call sheet for a series, ITV's Passenger, which is now available to stream on BritBox.Mosaku leads as Riya, a former Metropolitan Police officer who decides to relocate to the tiny town of Chadder Vale to care for her mother-in-law. After the one-two punch of a gruesome discovery and a strange disappearance, Riya becomes convinced that something isn't quite right in Chadder Vale. However, her Chief Constable, Linda (Jo Hartley), refuses to entertain any of Riya's theories. She's far too focused on maintaining the town's reputation and winning Best Kept Village. But is it all a facade? Are past troubles and recent unsettling events uncovering the sinister truth of Chadder Vale? Riya is determined to find out. With all six episodes of Passenger Season 1 now available to stream on BritBox, Mosaku took the time to make her second appearance on Collider Ladies Night. After recapping many key credits during her last Ladies Night interview, this time around, the focus fell heavily on her growing voice and presence in film and television, and how she aims to use them. Legends of Halloween takes a detour into Lovecraft Country with special guest comic book author Michael Watson. Based on the 1927 short story, H.P. Lovecraft's “The Colour Out of Space” follows the aftermath of a mysterious meteorite that crashes on a family farm in the dark woods west of Arkham, Massachusetts. Starring Nicolas Cage and directed by Richard Stanley, the film adaptation was meant to kickstart a shared Lovecraft cinematic universe, but wound up buried at the box office. And here to help with our review of Color Out of Space, we've got the creator and author of the Lovecraftian indie comic, ITHAQA, which expands the map of Lovecraft Country to include the Roaring ‘20s in Ithaca, New York. Stick around after our review to learn more about ITHAQA and find out how you can become a part of the cosmic horror! 50 episodes! WTF?! Most podcasts don't even make it past 3, so this is a reason to celebrate! In this episode I talk about why I started this podcast in the first place and how it has progressed over the last two years. I also recap all 49 episodes so far. This podcast started off as a resource for podcasting. I wanted to give you insight and tips. And, I did that. The first season was all about Podcasting 101. I talked about everything you needed to start a podcast: topics, equipment, mindset, etc. I even shared the steps to start a podcast for free!Soon after that, I realized that I didn't want the podcast to be all about podcasting. I wanted to collaborate and interview. I wanted to discuss other topics. So, I started experimenting...The second season of Podcasting Is the New Kink! was all about HBO's Lovecraft Country. It was my first review and it sort-of set the tone for future seasons. I talked about my favorite and least-liked moments, themes that drove the story line, and diversions from the book and more. I get really passionate about my shows and you could tell by how I started sharing more of my personal opinions, letting you in. But, something was nagging at me to go deeper, so the third season was all about me! I shared a few of the journeys that changed my life and helped me to become more of myself, and it felt really good to get a lot of that off my chest. After that, I was ready to keep experimenting, so I tried interviews. In season four I interviewed clients: my first, current, former, and... my mom. Lol. She wanted to start a podcast and I knew I would be comfortable with her. We talked about leaning into your curiosity, growing through guilt, and more. And, that brought us to episode 25, which was another celebration just like this! If you haven't noticed, I like to celebrate! :)The next season of Podcasting Is the New Kink! was all about FX's Kindred, which was cancelled after one season. And I am PISSED because they didn't even finish the story! I talked about that in the season. I also talked about diversions from the book, themes and characters, predictions for the season that we may never get and more.Season six was all about intimate partnerships! I sat down with The Amazing Clarks, Dee and Bee Hendershot (Truth and Coffee Time), and Snooks and Lovey Cason (Married Into Crazy). I learned so much from them and I absolutely recommend them! After I got my free sessions from the experts, I talked to a few of my friends who are in relationships and I honestly learned a lot from them as well. I also brought my partner back to talk about the major themes that came up in just about every episode. That brings us to the current season which is all about Black Women Yogis. I spoke to many yogis about the benefits and versatility of yoga, especially for POC, and getting out of your comfort zone. But, to be honest, this season is moreso about healing! So, I also spoke to other healing practitioners about how Black people can heal!ReferencesPoddster ArticleExploding Topics Article Podcasting Is the New Kink! is a Black-owned, woman-owned podcast, and we support other Black, Indigenous, Women of Color-owned podcasts and businesses. Previously ranked among the hemisphere's poorest countries, Guyana is becoming a global leader in per capita oil production, a shift which promises to profoundly transform the nation. This sea change presents a unique opportunity to dissect both the environmental impacts of modern-world resource extraction and the obscured yet damaging ways in which intersectional race and gender formations circumscribe Caribbean women's lives. Drawing from archival research and oral history, and examining mass-mediated flashpoints across the African and Indian diasporas―including Rihanna's sonic routes, ethnic conflict reportage, HBO's Lovecraft Country, and Netflix's Indian Matchmaking―Global Guyana: Shaping Race, Gender, and Environment in the Caribbean and Beyond (NYU Press, 2024) repositions this marginalized nation as a nexus of social and economic activity which drives popular culture and ideas about sexuality while reshaping the geopolitical and literal topography of the Caribbean region. Oneka LaBennett employs the powerful analytic of the pointer broom to disentangle the symbiotic relationship between Guyanese women's gendered labor and global racial capitalism. She illuminates how both oil extraction and sand export are implicated in a well-established practice of pillaging the Caribbean's natural resources while masking the ecological consequences that disproportionately affect women and children. Global Guyana uncovers how ecological erosion and gendered violence are entrenched in extractive industries emanating from this often-effaced but pivotal country. Sounding the alarm on the portentous repercussions that ambitious development spells out for the nation's people and its geographical terrain, LaBennett issues a warning for all of us about the looming threat of global environmental calamity. Oneka LaBennett is Associate Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity and Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Southern California. She's the author of She's Mad Real: Popular Culture and West Indian Girls in Brooklyn and co-editor of Racial Formation in the Twenty-First Century. Reighan Gillam is Associate Professor in the Department of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at Dartmouth College. Her research examines the ways in which Afro-Brazilian media producers foment anti-racist visual politics through their image creation. We have something a little different for you this week FoGers. We're taking a look at the "found footage" subgenre with a series of films all about a haunted hotel and its extended mythology. In 2015, writer/director Stephen Cognetti gave us HELL HOUSE LLC, a pseudo-documentary about 5 individuals seeking to renovate a supposedly haunted hotel in Abaddon, NY and turn it into a tourist haunt. Over the course of three sequels, Cognetti would explore an ever-widening mythology that was -- at times -- very refined and intimate and -- at other times -- went almost cosmic with its spiritual warfare elements.Joined by friends of the show Andrew Nelson and Matt Ruff, we survey these unique and fascinating films for all they're worth: including where they sit in the trends and tropes of found-footage horror and the psychological depths they sometimes brush up against. Not to mention the scary AF clowns! The conversation is a bit more free-wheelin' this week and we really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed having it!(Be sure to check out Andrew's recently released album - Love at the End of the Earth and Matt's most recent novel - The Destroyer of Worlds: A Return to Lovecraft Country)3:35 - Catching up with Andrew Nelson and Matt Ruff13:16 - HELL HOUSE LLC FranchiseSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

This episode contains: All three hosts are here and ready to talk about sci-fi; no science, sorry. Devon tells us about a birthday party at a trampoline park and Steven played a bunch of Star Wars board games. Meanwhile Ben was recording his son's performances on his iPhone. Ben's also been playing digital pinball on a vertical monitor. Devon has finished the Three Body Problem on Netflix and was pleased that it included elements from the second and third book. He was worried they would only include the first book, which he feels is only the prologue to the real story. Steven gives us a rundown of Tales of The Empire on Disney Plus. This show provides backstory to characters in Ahsoka. Ben and Steven talk about X-Men '97. If you're not watching X-Men '97, you should be! It includes wacky and wild, heart stopping moments. X-Men '97 was written for us, but new viewers could still understand about 90% of the show. Book Club: For this episode we read the short story “2043... a Merman I Should Turn to Be” by Nisi Shawl. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/58647676-2043-a-merman-i-should-turn-to-be?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=UGvenc3N0K&rank=1 Devon made sure to read the short story for this episode and has read the story for the next episode. Devon thinks the story would be better as a digital short given the “off-the-wall” concept and action in the story. Ben reminds us that the story is connected to the Jimmy Hendrix song: 1983 A Merman I should Turn to Be. The story reminded Ben of Lovecraft Country. Ben liked the statement about enemies wanting the same things we do. Steven enjoyed the story but was confused on some of the elements. We have a discussion of who and how people would actually modify their bodies to live in different habitats. We note that adapting to new habitats is not easy and ponder what the first inhabitants of the Moon, Mars, etc. will face. We all give the story 3 out of 4 stars. For the next episode we are reading The Jaunt by Stephen King. https://archive.org/details/the-jaunt-stephen-king Until next week, keep watching the skis! I mean skies.

You may think you know the story of the Tulsa race massacre. Maybe you've picked it up in pieces from HBO's Watchmen or Lovecraft Country. Maybe you saw the documentaries that dropped a couple of years ago to commemorate the 100th anniversary of that horrific moment in 1921 when white Tulsans killed hundreds of people and destroyed the neighborhood known as Black Wall Street. But no one has ever documented the story in such vivid, heartbreaking detail as Victor Luckerson in his 2023 book “Built from the Fire.” Victor, a journalist whose work has appeared in the New Yorker, The Ringer, New York Times, Wired and New York Magazine, painstakingly details what – and who – was lost in the fire that day. He charts the migration of people like the Goodwin family from places like Mississippi and Alabama, heading north and west to Tulsa, searching for a better life. He writes about how Tulsa became a mecca for Black businesses and Black culture. And he captures, through deeply researched storytelling, how it was all destroyed. But, importantly, he also tells us about what was rebuilt. And then he describes the second “slow burning” of Greenwood that was carried out through decades of government policies that hollowed out America's Black communities over the course of the 20th century.
